COMMUNITY Twin Palms Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Community Event Children and families of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate the golden anniversary of a beloved Boca Raton institution: Twin Palms Center for the Disabled. The Twin Palms 50th Anniversary Picnic will be held on November 10, 2018 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at their Center at 306 NW 35th Street in Boca Raton and feature bounce houses, face painting, entertainment, silent auction, food by Mississippi Sweets and 5 Spice Asian Street Market, and a special proclamation from the City of Boca Raton. Tickets include lunch and are $20 for adults and $15 for children, and available online at TwinPalmsCenter.org or by calling 561-391-4874. Twin Palms was founded in 1958 when a group of parents of children with developmental delays in Boca Raton arrived at a difficult predicament: their children had outgrown the public school system and affordable services for adults with disabilities were scarce. Troubled by the thought of their children fading into the background of society, unwilling to institutionalize them, and unable to afford in-home care, they conceived of an affordable, fun, and safe day program that harbored healthy growth and development for their loved ones. It was through the hard work and dedication of those parents that The Boca Raton Society for the Disabled - now called the Twin Palms

Center for the Disabled - was established. “Twin Palms is proud to have been serving the south Florida community for 50 years, helping more than 300 clients achieve their greatest individual potential,” says Twin Palms Executive Director Christopher Berens. The Center currently serves 24 adults diagnosed with a range of disabilities for five days a week. Each day they are greeted by program staff and volunteers at the facility equipped with a computer center, game room, musical instruments, arts and crafts station, and more. “Our clients’ families benefit from our work as much as the clients themselves,” says Berens. “They rely on our high-quality services and low-cost tuition, which enable them to continue to work, support their families, and contribute to society.” The Twin Palms Center 50th Anniversary Picnic family event is sponsored in part by The GEO Group and The Schmidt Family Foundation. This event is a fundraiser for Twin Palms and all proceeds supporting their facility and services. Lunch and entertainment are included in the ticket price ($20 for adults, $15 for children), and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket to roll out on the lawn to to celebrate this golden milestone and look toward the future!

Boca Raton Public Library Celebrates Read for the Record The Boca Raton Public Library invites you to celebrate Jumpstart’s 13th annual Read for the Record. This eventbrings together millions of people across the United States each year to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all children will enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. Join us during Drop-In Story Time at the Downtown Library on October 18 from 10:00-10:30am as a member of the Boca Raton City Council reads this year’s book, Maybe Something Beautiful, by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López. What good can a splash of color do in a community of gray? As Mira and her neighbors discover, more than you might ever imagine! Based on the true story of the Urban Art Trail in San Diego, California, Maybe Something Beautiful reveals how art can inspire transformation. “Read for the Record brings

people together all over the U.S. in classrooms, homes and libraries to highlight the important of early literacy,” says Amanda Liebl, Youth Programs Director. “This year’s book, Maybe Something Beautiful, reminds little readers that their creativity, no matter how small, can inspire and benefit their very own community.” The first 100 children to enter the doors will receive a free paperback copy of Maybe Something Beautiful courtesy of the Friends of the Library (one book per family), and everyone will enjoy a cupcake. No enrollment required. Read for the Record is just one component of the Boca Raton Public Library’s continued support for early literacy education. Invest in our Students, the Arts Instruction. It’s Critical for Their Education

Every year dozens of students who participate in band and orchestra in schools across our district cannot afford to rent or buy their instrument. But there is an even greater challenge facing these students: so many people have taken the arts for granted and are reluctant to support it financially. Our schools here in Boca Raton are not immune. The need is so great that members of the West Boca High School Chorus are holding a fundraiser. With 12 days to go, they are $2,411 short of their goal of $8,000. ` “Your generous support will help us offer a higher quality music experience for all of our students,” choir director Catherine Briggs wrote in an electronic post recently. “Your donation is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt via email for your generous gift. If you could please spread the word about our fundraiser by sharing it with your friends via Email, Text, or Social Mediawe would greatly appreciate it! We strive to create high quality music experiences that bring pride to our school and local community. Thank you again for your

support!!” Donations will be used to buy sheet music, uniform maintenance, festival fees, transportation, voice lesson scholarships and awards, among other necessities. The choirs are largely selffunded program. Typically, many publicschool music programs have little to no official budget, so they must rely on teacher out-of-pocket spending, fundraisers or support through parent-teacher organizations. For years, music classes have been the ugly ducklings of school curriculums. When school districts must make budget cuts, music and arts programs are often the last courses to be added and the first on the chopping block. I find it interesting and yet so disheartening that many people never think about how the artists - who soothes our hearts with such melodious sounds often achieve their status. It takes money to pay for practice sessions to eventually read the sheet music and to play those instruments. Let’s face it, music is always around us.

We do not do anything without music. We get music, just by turning on our TVs or radios, our ringtones and even the nursery rhymes, all provide music. Yet, we often take it for granted that it’s going to be there. Through your donations all of Briggs’ vocal music students will be able to receive a high quality and comprehensive music experience. Kamryn Mills, an 11th-grader and president of the KOP Mentoring Network, is among her students. “Thank you so much for helping me meet my goal,” said Mills, who has raised $40 of her $500 goal. I promised to match up to the first $100 that she raises. I encourage you to do likewise as you would be investing wisely in this child. Along with being an outstanding student academically, she is disciplined, polite and very appreciative of everything she gets. “Oh thanks. Again, thank you so much. Words can’t speak for how thankful I am,” she wrote in a text once she learned of my pledge. Educators will tell you that

music opportunities such as jazz band and orchestra ensembles give students a chance to connect outside of the classroom. They also give staff an opportunity to showcase talented student groups while offering the community opportunities to see live performances. Music education is such an important piece of the puzzle that helps us prepare students for life. There are also studies that suggested those who learn music score better on math tests, which supports my theory of why music education should be a required component in all schools because of the proven academic, social, and personal benefits it provides. With Boca Raton being a caring and generous community that sees the value in music education, let us do our part to help fill that need for some of our children. The school has set us a fundraising page where donors can give. Visit https://www.snap-raise.com/fundraisers/west-boca-2018-chorus-campaign/ participant/4484684?

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Connecting With Other People There are some people we meet who, after several encounters, we still feel we don't know them, or at least we don't know them significantly or sufficiently to trust them completely! Is this their fault or ours? It can be of either one, or it can be from neither. Some people never show themselves adequately to others, while we ourselves can, sometimes, be slow in our own grasp of what they've revealed about themselves to us. Words and gestures can be very deceiving, even when these have never intended so to be! There are others, however, that honestly portray their true selves from the very first moment they ever

meet somebody new. They offer a key to their heart from the outset, apart from any potential romantic interest. Moreover, they don't leave any doubt about the genuine sincerity of their words, deeds, and intents. Their positive posture is fully genuine! Most often, the problem is more in the reluctance of someone in fearlessly accepting the other, taking that person at his/her word, more easily acknowledging the sincerity of the other, and not reading in the gestures and comments of the other what was not communicated at all. Unquestionably, some persons “advertise” themselves in such way

that others can rather easily dismiss any desire of developing a long-term, friendly relationship. There's something real that, in spite of cordiality, won't succeed beyond that initial “hello.” And there is nothing wrong with that! Friendships that are developed, and really go somewhere desirable, take time, as human experience confirms in these and other related experiences. Varied settings for encounters can be planned, and time can be given for each person to observe the other in several human situations. Without intruding, significant questions may be legitimately asked one another, so as to establish a mental

profile of each other and cautiously proceed until a true friendship can be established or only an occasional faceto-face encounter is desirable. Each individual needs to allow his/her temperament, and other unique traits, to confirm their sense of confidence and satisfaction, as an attempt to relate with confidence can indeed happen. And when such is the case, how wonderful it can be for, as social creatures fashioned by a divine creator, people need people, and those who recognize that, and strive to achieve this goal, are indeed “the luckiest people in the world!”

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

South Florida Palm Beach County Bar Association Party at Ouzo Bay The South Florida Palm Beach County Bar Association held a cocktail reception for their member’s party at Ouzo Bay in Mizner Park. I never saw a room filled with so many lawyer’s at one time.

Feeling Impatient in the ‘Waiting Room’? Do you like having to wait? If you do, you are a rare individual. Most of us find waiting a great source of annoyance, frustration, even fear. We do not like waiting for a traffic light to change or finding ourselves stuck in traffic. When goals are delayed, we feel dismayed, wondering how we can speed the process. Sitting in the waiting room to see a doctor or dentist can test the limits of our patience. Recently I had to undergo a significant medical procedure. I arrived at the hospital before 8:30 a.m., as instructed, and was informed the procedure would begin by 10:30. But 10:30 came – and went – and my wife and I were still waiting. I tried not to get impatient, but eventually asked about the delay. Finally, the medical staff got to me and started the procedure, but it was not until 12:30! Waiting is just as unpleasant in a workplace context. Sometimes we must wait on someone before we can proceed with our part of a project. We need to discuss a major issue to discuss with our boss, but she cannot see us until later in the day. Waiting on a much-desired job offer can be agonizing. For those who follow Jesus Christ, waiting is part of God’s plan for developing character and helping us grow in our faith. Sometimes the only answer to our fervent prayers is, “Wait!” Some people have even referred to such times as being in “God’s waiting room.” We see many examples in the Bible of people God required to wait, even though He had special plans for them. Abraham and his wife, Sarah, had to wait many years for the child that God had promised them. The Lord had chosen Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but Moses still had to spend many years in exile before the right time arrived. Then the people of Israel had to

“wait” 40 years in the wilderness before they could enter the Promised Land. Sooner or later, we all find ourselves in God’s waiting room. What should we know about waiting – and what should we do during these unavoidable times? The Scriptures offer helpful insights: Trust in the One in whom we must wait. When things come to a standstill in our lives and careers, we attempt to do anything possible to get things moving again. Sometimes, however, God wants us simply to wait and trust that He is in control.”Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Do all that we can, but then, if necessary, wait.Being in “God’s waiting room” does not necessarily mean doing nothing. It does mean when we have done everything we think should be done, we must wait for God to accomplish the rest. “Trust in the Lord and do good…. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…. Wait for the Lord and keep his way…” (Psalm 37:3-7,34). When God hits the “pause button” in your life, draw on your faith. When forced to wait, we can become discouraged and even wonder if God has forgotten about us and what we need. This is an opportunity to strengthen our faith in Him and see what He will do, often far more than we could have imagined. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

enhance the College’s visibility and show its commitment to educating the leaders of today and tomorrow.” Participants, who come from diverse industries and backgrounds, will gain a deeper understanding of their own leadership styles, as well as understand the ways in which they can make significant improvements in the community. They will meet as a group for one full day each month, from September to May, and travel on a bus to all areas of the county, exploring program topics such as agriculture, education, public safety and healthcare. They will also break up into smaller groups to do community engagement projects benefiting local nonprofits and aimed at tackling challenges facing the region. Leadership Engage is the flagship program for LPBC which unites leaders to improve Palm Beach County and deepens their civic commitment and awareness of diverse issues and industries.

Even though Palm Beach County is known for its vast wealth, one in six residents do not know where their next meal will come from according to the Palm Beach County Food Bank. Since the majority of Palm Beach State College students are residents of the county, they too may be struggling to get enough to eat. To help ensure they have this basic need met, the College has relocated and expanded its food pantry, now called Panther’s Pantry. Created by Counseling Center Director Jeannie Hoban in 2015, the pantry moved from the Counseling Center to room SCA 102 on the Lake Worth campus. It now offers even more basic needs items for students including canned food, boxed lunches, notebooks, snacks, personal hygiene items and more at no cost. The pantry officially opens with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 25, which coincides with World Hunger Action Month. Thereafter, its normal operating hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the main pantry, all other PBSC campuses will have pantry cabinets available later in the fall term. Students may take up to 10 pounds of items per week. They only need to show their College ID. These pantries would not have been possible without the generous gift from Bank of America, which donated $45,000 toward the expansion of the pantry for all part-time and full-time students who are experiencing food insecurities regardless of their families’ income. The funds were also used toward Panther’s Closet, a student-run thrift store that opened in 2017 on the Lake Worth campus. “Partnering with Palm Beach State College to support the Panther’s Closet & Pantry with the lead gift has been very exciting,” said Stephanie Glavin, local market manager for Bank of America. “The program is unique in the sense that it provides students with access to basic needs and a hands-on opportunity to use the service-learning based coursework to learn how to run a social enterprise. The project was important for us to support, as we have a shared mission of advancing economic mobility and building thriving communities.” A boxed lunch at Panther’s Pantry. The Lake Worth campus pantry will be managed by Sheila Nichols, counseling center representative. The pantry cabinets

will be managed by a student activities club on the various campuses. When the pantries need to be restocked, some of the food will come from donations from organizations that Palm Beach State is a member of including, the Palm Beach County Food Bank, Feeding South Florida and the College and University Food Bank Alliance. Donations are also welcome from the college community. Those who wish to donate can visit the pantry for a list of items needed. Panther’s Pantry is not the only recent initiative launched at the College to help students in need. The College also opened the Panther Power Center to help strengthen retention and graduation rates for lowincome students who are first time college students at the Lake Worth and Belle Glade campuses. The center, which will support two cohorts of 1,000 students, was established with a two-year, $250,000 grant from the Farris Foundation. Through the Panther Power Center, located in room PG 116 on the Lake Worth campus, students and members of their household will be screened for unmet needs, referred to community agencies, assisted with completing State of Florida administered benefit applications such as SNAP and Medicaid, invited to on-campus workshops, and receive help completing a personal financial plan to pay for their education through to graduation and help stabilize their financial situation. The center complements the services of Panther’s Pantry and Panther’s Closet. “More and more students are trying to balance going to school, working and paying for housing, utilities and child care,” said Dr. Peter Barbatis, vice president of student services and enrollment management and interim provost of the Lake Worth campus. “When you add food and financial insecurities on top of that, it can lead to students skipping meals, dropping classes or not buying textbooks. At PBSC, we realize the challenges students are facing and want to help relieve this stress by providing them with these resources so they can focus on their classes, grades and building tight networks with friends.” For more information on Panther’s Pantry, call Nichols at 561-8683980. SPORTS Boca Raton Football Club to Field Team in Beaches Adult Soccer League

BOCA RATON, FL — Today, Boca Raton Football Club continues its commitment to growing soccer in Palm Beach County by proudly announcing that the club will now field a team in the Beaches Adult Soccer League (BASL) starting immediately. A non-profit organization founded in 1989 by a group of individuals who wanted regional soccer to be played at the highest levels possible, BASL is the number 1 amateur soccer league in all of Florida today and has grown to be able to manage more sanctioned games per year than any other adult league. “We want to continue to grow that game in Palm Beach County,” said club president, Douglas Heizer. “We are 561 Pride, and to have a team in the BASL is the epitome of Local Soccer. Our brand is known worldwide, and to place a team in Palm Beach County’s best adult league is something we have been working for for a long time, we are glad the day is here.” Boca Raton FC looks for key partnerships among locals and teams to operate teams outside the two main NPSL and APSL clubs that Boca Raton FC manages. In BASL, Boca Raton FC has reached a partnership with Nick Rasek, who had a team in BASL last year named West Palm FC. Rasek will continue to run his team, and will rebrand his club as Boca Raton FC, and will now have access to Boca Raton FC’s players poll, as well as assistance from Boca Raton FC’s media

department to promote BASL games, as well as Boca Raton FC vendors. “We aren’t able to own and operate every single team in every single league we want to join,” added Heizer. “Key partnerships like the one with Nick will help us put our brand into teams that would like to be affiliated to the Boca Raton FC brand and have exclusive access to Boca Raton FC partners, departments, and more.” In the 2018 BASL Summer Championship, under Rasek’s leadership, his club defeated the top two BASL teams, Gold Coast Inter AFC, and Shocker FC to earn the 2018 BASL Summer Championship after coming in 4th place in the regular season. With a extensive knowledge of the game, Rasek holds a US Federation C License, and was an assistant coach on Lynn University’s 2011 National Champion Runner-Up and 2012 Championship teams. Currently Rasek runs the Lake Worth Youth Soccer programs, something he’s been going since 2012. With its announcement of the BASL team, Boca Raton FC now boasts teams four leagues, all with different levels of play, and a bigger chance for local players to be seen and become part of the Boca Raton FC family. Boca Raton FC’s BASL team will take the field again on Sunday, September 23 at 7pm as they take on Palm Beach Flames at Marisol Park in Palm Beach Gardens. For more information on the BASL or Boca Raton FC’s BASL team, please visit: bocaratonfc.com/basl

The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer squad will begin their longest consecutive home stretch of the season this weekend, with two matches – one concluding non-conference play (Thursday at 7 p.m. versus Oral Roberts) and another to ramp up Conference USA action with the team's 2018 home opener league (Sunday hosting UAB at 1 p.m.) – kicking off a four-match homestand. The Owls (3-6-0, 1-0-0 C-USA) picked up a big three points on the road in their league lidlifter last Friday, beating Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia, 2-1. Sammy Vitols earned C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors with a goal and an almost-assist on the gamewinner, credited as an own goal by the Thundering Herd defense. Oral Roberts (5-6-0) won four of their first five matches and then lost five in a row before winning on Sunday, 3-2 over Missouri State in overtime. Junior forward Jordan Langebartels leads the Golden Eagles both in goals (five) and assists (three), and recorded the helper on the game-winner last time out. UAB (4-3-1, 1-0-0 C-USA) has not been beaten in their last four contests, with three wins and a tie. That includes

www.bocaratontribune.com

a 1-0 decision Sunday at home against Louisiana Tech to, like the Owls, go 1-0 in C-USA play. The winner came just 1:16 in as the game's only score. The team's leading goal scorer on the season is Kamilah Mustafa with five, and the Blazers also feature Preseason C-USA goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty, who led the league in goals against average and save percentage in 2017. The Owls and Golden Eagles have never met. In the last six years, the Owls and Blazers have tangled seven times, and FAU has gained at least a point in each result, holding a 5-0-2 all-time edge. After a tie in last year's regular season matchup in Boca Raton, 1-1, the Owls eliminated UAB in the first round of the C-USA Championship in seeded upset (No. 6 seed over the No. 3 seed), 1-0. Asta Arnadottir contributed the golden goal 3:53 into the first overtime. Two more home matches are ahead for the Owls next weekend as well, both in league play, hosting Louisiana Tech on Friday, Sept. 28, and Southern Miss two days later on Sunday. Following that, there's just two more at home for the remainder of the regular season.
