Participants will also learn about best practices and challenges from across the country, as they grapple with different strategies in a collaborative and supportive peer-learning environment. Local leaders who are selected for the Champions Institute will have the opportu-

At the completion of the inaugural class, participants will be experts in promoting community improvements to create safer streets for all users including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motorists. Participants will be prepared to support plans, policies and funding that promote the CDC’s Active People, Healthy Nation? Initiative of expanding activity-friendly routes to everyday destinations, in their communities. After participants complete their work in the Champions Institute, SGA will provide continuing support to the local champions as they serve their communities. They will act as emissaries to other local leaders, sharing their expertise and ideas to grow a network of Active People, Healthy Nation? Champions across the country who will build and expand activity-friendly routes to everyday destinations across the country. “I’m honored to have been selected to participate in the Champions Institute,” commented Thomson. “The design and implementation of Complete Streets in Boca Raton has been a priority of mine since I joined the City Council, and I look forward to learning from national experts in the field so as to better serve our residents in making our streets safer for everyone.” This program is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity. An Open Letter to the Boca Golf & Tennis Residents from City of Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer
By: Mayor Scott Singer Dear Boca Golf and Tennis Residents, I’m sharing this letter with you and your neighbors at Boca Golf and Tennis to provide more helpful information about the plans announced this week for the Boca Raton Resort & Club to donate the Boca Country Club (BCC) to the City of Boca Raton. I know many of you have questions, so please let me share some information. Thank you to those of you have already reached out to me, my City Council colleagues, City staff, and County Commissioner Weinroth, who relayed your views as well. A number of you have reached out about your excitement for the opportunity to play golf on this course near your homes for the first time. There are other benefits to BG&T residents in this proposed transaction as well. Timing of Plans: As envisioned, the Boca Raton Resort & Club will continue operating BCC as a private club through September 30, 2021, with public access beginning October 1, 2021. Over the next year, the City will refine its management and operating plans for the club facilities. While the specific pricing for greens fees and other costs has not been determined, we anticipate a substantial decrease in greens fees. I welcome the opportunity to hear your input as the city proceeds with plans for the operations of the golf course, tennis, and other facilities. Continued Financial Support for Master Association: The Resort & Club currently pays assessments to the master association at Boca Golf and Tennis. The City would continue those. New Access to Course for BG&T: Of the roughly 960 homes in Boca Golf and Tennis, only about 90 currently have course membership and access. For the first time ever, the 90% of BG&T residents who are not club members would have access to golf, tennis, and the clubhouse without having to pay membership fees. Discounted Access: Even though Boca Golf and Tennis is not within the City limits, the City is happy to treat BG&T resCommunity
idents the same as City residents for discounted rounds of golf and annual passes. The City discount available to BG&T residents would be in addition to the anticipated general decrease from current pricing of greens fees. Security: A few residents have raised some concerns about security. Over the coming weeks and months, we can address any specific concerns, but generally, nothing should change. The course has been functioning for nearly 30 years with non-residents playing each day. Having additional players would not change the character of the course. Golf course staff would continue to be present. In many decades of running golf courses, we have had no particular security or police concerns. Quality: The City of Boca Raton is known for our world-class recreational amenities and the beauty of our parks and green space. We take great pride in maintaining our facilities to high standards. Other possible operators might not maintain the quality of course and facilities. The City is the right type of owner and manager for this property to maintain its high level of quality. Many of you already see and enjoy the quality of our parks and other facilities, and that standard would be maintained at BCC. Home Values: Several residents have already communicated that they expect an increase in home values because of the new access to the amenities at Boca Country Club. BCC could become a more thriving and viable facility and in turn, become an enhancement to the BG&T community. Your Input: Although BG&T residents are not City residents, we value your thoughts and look forward to your important input to make this transition as smooth as possible. I hope this open letter helps address your concerns. Please feel free to reach out to me or the City with your input and thoughts. I do receive many emails but will do my best to respond. Please feel free to share this letter with other neighbors who might want this information. Thank you, Mayor Scott Singer
Lynn to Continue Block schedule in Spring 2021 Lynn University today announced that block scheduling will continue through the Spring 2021 semester. The blocks divide the undergraduate day semester into four, four-week sessions. The multiple sessions provide flexibility, allowing students to control their schedules, and for the university to quickly switch to remote learning, if necessary. The move comes on the heels of positive feedback from students and professors who believe that the block schedules have provided greater flexibility and enhanced learning. “It takes time to build good habits, so we’re being intentional about not changing learning modalities if we don’t have to. Providing our students with a consistent experience for an entire academic year is a responsible way to move forward,” said Academic Dean Mike Petroski. “We want our students to be successful, and we’re seeing that a vast majority of students learn better when they have fewer classes to focus on at a time.” According to Petroski, block scheduling increases the amount of classroom time students receive each week, which supports deeper discussion and topic exploration. It also reduces the number of projects or exams due at any given time, which helps decrease mid-term and end-semester stress for the students and the professors. Class-free Fridays additionally provide time for course planning, homework, laboratory sessions, professorstudent 1:1s and other activities. But will block scheduling become a cornerstone at Lynn? “We’ll continue to let data drive our decision-making,” said Petroski. “We will conduct surveys and focus groups in the spring, and we will review grades and attendance data before making any final decisions.” The university also announced that January Term will take place Jan. 4–22, with limited experiential learning experiences. Classes will take place remotely in the first week and in person on campus in the second and third weeks. Comfort Cases will return, and more details will become available closer to January. Some professors report that students are better prepared, more engaged and more present. “I taught two courses in Session A, and I had better attendance—almost 100%— every class,” said Gary Carlin, associate professor in the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn College of Communication and Design. “The faster pace kept the students en-
www.bocaratontribune.com
gaged and on task, and the work they delivered was as good, if not better, than in the 16-week semester.” “The students are so engaged, in the classroom discussions and in submitting their work,” said Anna Krift, professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. “They are also prepared: Not only do they submit their work on time, but it is ahead of time! I love it!” Class-free Fridays give professors time to prepare lessons and get to know their students better. “It’s a great time to catch up on grading papers, advising students, setting up our Center Court Speaker Series presenters, and preparing for the next week’s class sessions,” said Ted Curtis, associate professor of sports management in the College of Business and Management. For others, the schedule presents complexity that matches the real world. “While the block schedule allows students to focus entirely on one subject at a time, it is also situated within the larger process of flight training, which requires students to navigate several ‘timelines’ as they work toward their degrees, attain their flight certificates, and accumulate the flight experience they need over multiple semesters and blocks,” said Ben Samples, assistant professor in the Burton D. Morgan College of Aeronautics. “This framework contributes to our students’ personal management and organizational skills in a way that really wasn’t possible before the block schedules. They are building a ‘meta’ skill set that will serve them in the demanding field of aviation, and it’s essentially happening automatically.” Block scheduling provides intense bursts of activity for shorter periods of time. So, what should students do with that extra free time? “I suggest students reach out to their professors and have one-on-one chats,” said Associate Professor Jennifer Lesh, who teaches in the Donald E. and Helen L. Ross College of Education. “In my experience, students seem to enjoy that time to have a conversation about the course, about how they are navigating this unprecedented time in our world, and just in general, about how they’re doing. It helps me have a better understanding from where my students are coming.” “Remember that each four class days is the equivalent of a month during a traditional semester. Be sure not to fall behind!” said Curtis. October 16 - October 22, 2020

Suspended City Manager: Delray Beach Mayor “Does go After Black People” In order for Delray Beach City Manager George Gretsas to get his job, he had to carry out the directive of now embattled Mayor Shelly Petrolia’s to remove two department heads as part of a “Hit List”. Gretsas has since been suspended for allegedly bullying and harassing Assistant City Manager Suzanne Fisher. The “Hit list” included Police Chief Javaro Sims, who has had a stellar 28-year career and is known as a community leader, and City Clerk Katerri Johnson, who has been with the city since 2017. In a phone conference with black leaders where Gretsas sought to clear his name, he told them that during his stint in Delray Beach, he got a troubling peek at Petrolia’s corruption and bigotry toward blacks, especially those in leadership positions. “She basically said she thinks the police chief is weak, she doesn’t think he has any business running the police department, he shouldn’t have been picked in the first place, the selection process was
a disaster and he’s no good,” Gretsas recalled her saying. “She thinks the city clerk is terrible [and] doesn’t belong in the position.” Both Sims and Johnson are black. On that same call, Gretsas said Petrolia devised a scheme to oust Sims by creating a Department of Public Safety and planned to tap then interim City Manager Neal de Jesus to head the department. Both Sims and the fire chief would then report to de Jesus. Those plans however fell through when de Jesus was forced to resign March 10 while he was under investigation for sexual harassment. Shortly after he took over as city manager in January, Gretsas asked Petrolia about her earlier expressed desire to create the executive leadership position. She insisted that he carry out her wish. City Attorney Lynn Gelin also “came to me independently and was trying to convince me that this was a good idea,” he told the group.
Calls and a text to Petrolia and Gelin seeking their responses were not returned. Both Johnson and Sims said they had no comment on the matter. Petrolia, who has been mayor since March 2018 and served on the City Commission for five years before, made it her mission to dissolve the independently run Community Redevelopment Agency Board a month after she became mayor, Gretsas said. “I think she was singularly responsible for dismantling the CRA board,” he told the group. The CRA was created in 1985 to invest taxpayer money into the blighted areas of the city, which is on the west side and in the black community. “She does go after black people,” Gretsas said. “Clearly they went after [former Director of the Neighborhood & Community Services Department] Michael Coleman and his assistant [Jamael Stewart].” Given an option to resign or be fired,
the duo resigned. They have since filed Whistleblower Act lawsuits against the city, alleging they were forced to resign after Fisher, Petrolia’s protégé, conducted a “sham investigation” into distribution of grant money to various organizations. The county’s Ethics Commission subsequently cleared Stewart of any wrongdoings. Coleman, however, was not named in the Ethics Commission’s report and the status of the complaint against him is not known. Petrolia’s alleged comments and actions have drawn criticism, with a handful of residents and city employees, calling for her resignation. “She needs to go,” said Ann Wright, president of the SW Neighborhood Association. Wright said the mayor’s conduct conjures up memories of the torrid past, when former police Chief Charles Kilgore, who ran the department from 1979 to 1990, instilled fear in black residents. Creating an Atmosphere of “Creative Abrasion” Recently I read social media comments presented by a business consultant and coach, Tim Kight. I have never met him, but I appreciate his pointed, practical thinking. What he posted about was the power of “creative abrasion. In other words, the value of disagreement.” Kight added, “When we have different perspectives and then engage in creative abrasion to test and refine our ideas, we produce better solutions.” His observations are both old – and new. Especially for our times, when it seems we have misplaced or abandoned the fine art of civil discourse. Many colleges and universities, for example, have created “safe zones” where students can retreat without fear of seeing or hearing viewpoints that differ from their own. Is this learning? Not having their ideas challenged? As protests, followed by rioting, have taken place October 16 - October 22, 2020
in different parts of the world, it has become evident that everyone is talking – even shouting – but no one is listening. Even with the coronavirus pandemic, a variety of opinions and perspectives have emerged. Rather than applauding the free exchange of ideas, however, the media and politicians have largely discouraged this. Which, it appears, is to the detriment of everyone. “Creative abrasion” is regarded as an alien concept, something to be feared rather than embraced. This kind of friction, however, is something I valued, even when I was not familiar with Kight’s term. Especially during my years as an editor of newspapers and a magazine. In meeting with the editorial team to plan upcoming editions, we each had different ideas. We allowed them to be presented, then would discuss and often, debate them. In the process,
we invariably discovered the whole (the finished product) was greater than the sum of the parts (our individual contributions). The fact that creative abrasion is not supported in many environments is sad, because this is hardly a novel idea. In fact, The Bible advocates this strongly. Consider the following passages: Friction is mutually beneficial. Imagine the blades of two knives clashing together, each making the other sharper. The same occurs between people, whether in a workplace setting, a marriage, a ministry, or a sports team. Rubbing up against each other, even with civil, congenial conflict, we can make one another better. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Value in differing viewpoints. In court cases, multiple witnesses are often asked to give tes-
www.bocaratontribune.com
timony so the judge or jury can receive a full, accurate account. In a similar sense, we might be convinced of our opinion or viewpoint, but if we are willing to listen to other perspectives, we may discover we are wrong – or that the best solution is a combination of a variety of ideas. “What you have seen with your eyes do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame?” (Proverbs 25:8). Correction can be helpful. Pride can be a great obstacle in our pursuit of success, especially feeling self-assured that we are in the right, whether our thinking or actions. “Creative abrasion” might cause some pain, but in the end we often find ourselves better off because of it. “Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” (Proverbs 25:12).

Each of the Secure Drop Box locations will be equipped with 24/7 Video Monitoring to ensure safety and security. Those locations will be at the four offices of the Supervisor of Elections: SOE Main Office: 240 S Military Trl West Palm Beach; SOE South County Branch: 345 S Congress Ave Delray Beach; SOE North County Branch: 3188 PGA Blvd RM 2401 Palm Beach Gardens; and SOE West County Branch: 2976 State Road 15 Flr 2 Belle Glade Early Voting for the General Election will begin this Monday, October 19, 2020, and continue through Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 7AM to 7PM. There will be no early voting on Monday November 2, 2020 as the Supervisor of Elections prepares for the “main event” on November 3, 2020. Register Palm Beach County voters can cast their ballot at any of the eighteen (18) Early Voting Sites located throughout the county during Early Voting hours. HOWEVER, on Election Day (November 3, 2020) voters can only vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct. Voters are required to present a valid and current photo/signature ID at checkin. The full list of acceptable IDs on the SOE website (PBCElections.org). If you cannot get to either an Early Voting site or your assigned precinct’s voting site in election day there is still time to request your Vote by Mail ballot but you need to act fast. The deadline to request that a Voteby-Mail ballot be mailed is no later than 5PM on the tenth day before the election (October 24, 2020).
A voter can pick up or have delivered their own Vote-by-Mail ballot at any time (including on Election Day). A voter can authorize in writing for someone else (a designee) to pick up the voter’s ballot. The designee must submit an affidavit to pick up a ballot for a voter. The earliest a designee can pick up the voter’s ballot is nine days before Election Day. Your designee will need to provide the SOE with a written request from you and a photo ID, and will need to complete this affidavit. If a voter or designee waits until Election Day to pick up or have delivered a Vote by Mail ballot, the Election Day Vote by Mail Ballot Delivery Affidavit must also be completed. The voter must affirm an emergency exists keeping the voter from being able to vote at his or her assigned polling place. Some Additional Information About the Vote by Mail Ballot. Is there a difference between an absentee ballot and a mail ballot? In Florida, No. These are two terms to describe the same type of ballot. Any registered eligible voter may vote by mail. All eligible mail ballots are counted in an election, the same as Election Day ballots and Early Voting ballots. Voting by mail provides voters with the flexibility and convenience to vote from their homes. Do I need a reason to vote by mail? No, any registered voter may request a Vote by Mail ballot. How do I request a mail ballot? Requests can be made online, in person, by phone, by email, or by fax. Online by clicking on the “Request a Vote By Mail” button found on their Vote By Mail web page, In person by visiting one of their four offices (listed above), By calling 561.656.6208, By email to VoteByMail@PBCElections.org, or By fax to 561.656.6230. Will my mail ballot be sent to my residential address or my mailing address? If your voter registration record includes a mailing address, your ballot will be mailed to your mailing address. If you would like your ballot mailed to an address other than your residential or mailing address, a signed request is required. Signed requests can be faxed to 561.656.6230, mailed to one of our four offices, or emailed to VoteByMail@PBCElections.org.

Some people view the Bible strictly as a religious book, failing to see its relevance for every day. However, it can serve as a very practical, common sense guide for any aspect of life – including the business and professional world. No better example could be cited than the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. A trusted adviser to Persian king Artaxerxes in the 5th century B.C., he dreamed of rebuilding Jerusalem, reduced to mostly rubble for more than 140 years. The account of Nehemiah shows five key steps he took that paved the way for restoring the city: 1. Prayerful assessment: Learning Jerusalem was in ruins, Nehemiah’s heart broke. He prayed fervently before approaching the king to ask his blessing to pursue the reconstruction project. After receiving approval, Nehemiah then went to Jerusalem and quietly assessed the damage for three days before taking action. Nehemiah 2:13 states, “So I went out at night…inspecting the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were consumed by fire.” If you desire a new project or your team to be successful, start with prayer, then objectively assess the situation. 2. A compelling vision: For nearly a century and a half, no one had revived the city of Jerusalem; few people believed it was possible, or even necessary. Nehemiah, however, had a much bigger vision. For it to become reality, he needed the locals to catch his vision. He said to the people, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (Nehemiah 2:17). If you desire a team to follow you, communicating a compelling vision for the future is crucial. 3. Find the right leaders for leverage: In those days, the high priest was very powerful. If that leader did not participate, few would
www.bocaratontribune.com
follow. Along with the high priest, Nehemiah knew local business leaders would be very influential. With God’s help, he managed not only to engage business leaders in rebuilding certain sections of the wall, but also convinced Eliashib, the high priest, to lead the charge. Nehemiah 3:1 tells us, “Eliashib, the high priest, and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate.” To form a strong team that gets results, recruit and leverage people of influence. 4. Build collaborative teams: More than 40 sections of the wall around Jerusalem needed repair. Each team could have focused on their piece of the wall, but without collaboration their section would become an island easily toppled. They needed to work together – to accomplish the bigger goal of rebuilding the wall, and to fight off enemies. “From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor” (Nehemiah 4:16). With collaborative teams, Nehemiah overcame opposition. If you desire a strong successful organization, build teams that work together. 5. Encourage commitment and accountability: When adversity comes, teams either fall apart or become stronger together. A good leader recognizes this and addresses adverse situations accordingly. Nehemiah and his team received multiple death threats; they were understandably scared. Nehemiah was at risk of losing his workers without their strong commitment. He encouraged them by saying, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes” (Nehemiah 4:14). He later encountered internal conflict as well, requiring that he hold his leaders accountable to God’s standards. If you desire a successful project or business, encourage commitment and accountability.

Lynn begins 2020–21 academic year with national recognition, strong enrollment 2020 brought unique challenges to universities across the country as they explored ways to maintain learning amid a pandemic. Lynn confronted those obstacles with creativity and flexibility when it reopened its Boca Raton campus in August. A cornerstone of its “roadmap to reopening” was a new block schedule, which divided the traditional undergraduate semester into four, four-week sessions and allowed students to choose on-campus or remote instruction. The university completed Session A on Sept. 18 with 3,074 students enrolled from 103 countries. In addition, over 100 undergraduate students who weren’t able to attend the first block began classes in Session B. “We made tough decisions this summer and continued to push forward to ensure the best outcomes for our students,” said President Kevin M. Ross. “Our hard work is paying off as we look to what is exOctober 16 - October 22, 2020

pected to be our second largest freshman class in history. The ability for students to make decisions based on their unique circumstances, without foregoing educational quality, is what sets Lynn apart.” Appreciating the flexibility to learn from anywhere, 23% of undergraduate students opted for remote instruction for Session A. Lynn also welcomed a record number of students to its online program, which allows adult learners who have priorities outside the classroom to complete their coursework on their own time. Faculty, staff and administrators received well-deserved encouragement for their efforts when several national rankings published in September. First came a new study by Washington Monthly … The publication evaluated America’s most popular majors for black students and ranked universities based on median first-year earnings for graduates. Men’s Virility Restored in Clinical Trial; 275% More Blood Flow in 5 Minutes A newly improved version of America’s best-selling male performance enhancer gives 70-year-old men the ability and stamina they enjoyed in their 30’s. America’s best-selling sexual performance enhancer just got a lot better. It’s the latest breakthrough for nitric oxide – the molecule that makes E.D. woes fade and restores virility when it counts the most. Nitric oxide won the Nobel Prize in 1998. It’s why “the little blue pill” works. More than 200,000 studies confirm it’s the key to superior sexual performance. And this new discovery increases nitric oxide availability resulting in even quicker, stronger and longer-lasting performance. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study (the “gold-standard” of research) involved a group of 70-year-old-men. They didn’t exercise. They didn’t eat healthy. And researchers reported their “nitric oxide availability was almost totally compromised,” resulting in blood flow less than HALF of a man in peak sexual health. But only five minutes after the first dose their blood flow increased 275%, back to levels of a perfectly healthy 31-year-old man! “It’s amazing,” remarks nitric oxide expert Dr. Al Sears. “That’s like giving 70-year-old men the sexual power of 30-year-olds.”
WHY SO MUCH EXCITEMENT? Despite the billions men spend annually on older nitric oxide therapies, there’s one wellknown problem with them. They don’t always work. A very distinguished and awarded doctor practicing at a prestigious Massachusetts hospital who has studied Nitric Oxide for over 43 years states a “deficiency of bioactive nitric oxide… leads to impaired endotheliumdependent vasorelaxation.” In plain English, these older products may increase levels of nitric oxide. But that’s only half the battle. If it’s not bioactively available then your body can’t absorb it to produce an erection. Experts simply call it the nitric oxide “glitch.” And until now, there’s never been a solution.
NEXT GENERATION NITRIC OXIDE FORMULA FLYING OFF SHELVES Upon further research, America’s No. 1 men’s health expert Dr. Al Sears discovered certain nutrients fix this “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow.
He’s combined those nutrients with proven nitric oxide boosters in a new formula called Primal Max Red. In clinical trials, 5,000 mg is required for satisfying sexual performance. Primal Max Red contains a bigger, 9,000 mg per serving dose. It’s become so popular, he’s having trouble keeping it in stock. Dr. Sears is the author of more than 500 scientific papers. Thousands of people listened to him speak at the recent Palm Beach Health & Wellness Festival featuring Dr. Oz. NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath recently visited his clinic, the Sears Institute for AntiAging Medicine. Primal Max Red has only been available for a few months — but everyone who takes it reports a big difference. “I have the energy to have sex three times in one day, WOW! That has not happened in years. Oh, by the way I am 62,” says Jonathan K. from Birmingham, AL.
A new discovery that increases nitric oxide availability was recently proven in a clinical trial to boost blood flow 275%
these increased levels lasted up to 12 hours. “I measured my nitric oxide levels, you can buy a test kit from Amazon,” reports 48-yearold Jeff O. “Monday night I showed depleted.” Then he used ingredients in Primal Max Red and, “The results were off the charts. I first woke around 3 a.m. on Tuesday very excited. My nitric oxide levels measured at the top end of the range.”
HOW IT WORKS
FREE BONUS TESTOSTERONE BOOSTER
Loss of erection power starts with your blood vessels. Specifically, the inside layer called the endothelium where nitric oxide is made.
Every order also gets Dr. Sears testosterone boosting formula Primal Max Black for free.
The problem is various factors THICKEN your blood vessels as you age. This blocks availability causing the nitric oxide “glitch.” The result is difficulty in getting and sustaining a healthy erection. How bad is the problem? Researcher shows the typical 40-year-old man absorbs 50% less nitric oxide. At 50, that drops to 25%. And once you pass 60 just a measly 15% gets through. To make matters worse, nitric oxide levels start declining in your 30’s. And by 70, nitric oxide production is down an alarming 75%. Primal Max Red is the first formula to tackle both problems. Combining powerful nitric oxide boosters and a proven delivery mechanism that defeats the nitric oxide “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow. There’s not enough space here to fully explain how it works, so Dr. Sears will send anyone who orders Primal Max Red a free special report that explains everything.
MORE CLINICAL RESULTS Nutrients in Primal Max Red have logged impressive results. In a Journal of Applied Physiology study, one resulted in a 30 times MORE nitric oxide. And
“If you want passionate ‘rip your clothes off’ sex you had in your younger days, you need nitric oxide to get your erection going. And testosterone for energy and drive,” says Dr. Sears. “You get both with Primal Max Red and Primal Max Black.”
HOW TO GET PRIMAL MAX To secure free bottles of Primal Max Black and get the hot, new Primal Max Red formula, buyers should contact the Sears Health Hotline at 1-800-609-6260 within the next 48 hours. “It’s not available in drug stores yet,” says Dr. Sears. “The Hotline allows us to ship directly to the customer.” Dr. Sears feels so strongly about Primal Max, all orders are backed by a 100% moneyback guarantee. “Just send me back the bottle and any unused product within 90 days from purchase date, and I’ll send you all your money back,” he says. PBA Interns Flourish at Cognosante Three recent Palm Beach Atlantic graduates and one current student advanced their growing careers through 10-week summer virtual internships with Cognosante, a leading provider of health information technology solutions. Isaac Miles, a 2020 marketing graduate, served as a business development intern for J. Lodge, a Cognosante subsidiary. Senior Lucson Pierre and 2020 graduates Abigail Martineau and Zachary Stroven — all computer science majors — worked in customer relationship management (CRM) platform development and support for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Cognosante is a contractor for the VA and the U.S. Department of Defense. The company is based in Falls Church, Virginia. Marketing major Isaac Miles, a 2020 graduate, served as a business development intern for J. Lodge. The Cognosante subsidiary provides speech analytics for quality assurance at customer contact centers. J.Lodge’s mission is to offer meaningful job opportunities to people with disabilities, inhome caregivers, and military spouses. Cognosante’s national internship program is typically hosted at their headquarters in Falls Church, VA. However, due to COVID-19, the company transitioned the program to a virtual experience for the interns. Lucson Pierre, a senior computer science major who came to the U.S. from Haiti, was inspired by Cognosante founder and
CEO Michele Kang’s story of starting the business from her garage.Early in the internship, Cognosante founder and CEO Michele Kang greeted the interns on a video call. Kang’s story of immigrating to the U.S. from Korea, furthering her education and then starting a successful business resonated with Pierre, who moved from Haiti in 2007. He considers Kang a role model, he said. “She helps us know and remember that the American Dream is still alive. To have such passion for health and to start a business from your garage and build it into what it is today, it’s amazing,” Pierre said. “She’s so energetic and passionate. She keeps going and never stops.” The University honored Kang with its American Free Enterprise Day Medal in 2019. That’s when Martineau first heard Kang tell the “incredible” story of her rise to success. Martineau was just as impressed when she met Kang again on the interns’ call, she said. Cognosante founder and CEO Michele Kang speaks at Palm Beach Atlantic during American Free Enterprise Day on November 14, 2019, when the University honored her with its American Free Enterprise Medal.“I was just awestruck by how far she’s come and what she’s still willing to do for others,” Martineau said. “She really emphasized that Cognosante is a family. The fact that she was willing to get on this call with interns that she didn’t know, and she took time out of her day to em-
phasize that point, that’s something that I really appreciated.” Miles said he was impressed with the communication and professional development opportunities afforded him by his supervisor, who allotted time for him to research the best way to handle the toughest parts of the job. “This was a huge opportunity and something I would recommend to PBA students,” Miles said. “Try to get some experience with the CRM platform, especially in business, because so many people in sales positions and marketing are looking for it.” Zachary Stroven, a 2020 computer science graduate, enjoyed interacting with the staff at the Orlando VA when he picked up his computer equipment to complete his virtual summer internship experience with Cognosante. For the VA, Cognosante provides a platform used to store and verify veterans’ personal information to offer the best possible services. Such a system takes years for developers to create, implement and refine. Because of the sensitive nature of the work, the interns were trained in patient privacy laws and cybersecurity, as well as the technical aspects of the job, they said. Stroven said he enjoyed getting to know the staff at the Orlando VA — one of the few places he visited during coronavirus restrictions — when he picked up the government-issued ID that he needed to access his computer. “That was definitely refreshing, seeing
how much everyone cares about the VA,” Stroven said. “A lot of people are working there because they are veterans, and they have served, and that’s amazing as well.” Abigail Martineau, a 2020 computer science graduate, was impressed with the way that Cognosante founder and CEO Michele Kang makes time for others and with the career development support she received from Cognosante Recruiter Shawn Crowley.Martineau was especially thankful for the coaching that Cognosante’s Recruiter Shawn Crowley provided. Throughout the internship, he kept the interns connected and served as an invaluable sounding board for career next steps, she said. The internships were the result of a new partnership between PBA and Cognosante. Crowley said he was impressed with the students’ strong work ethic, as well as the care shown by PBA’s Career Development office. The office is led by Director Dr. Kim Ladd and Assistant Director Jennifer Fonseca. “It’s very rare that you find career counselors that can actually share the story of the students that they’re sending you, and that’s something that both Kim and Jennifer do a great job with,” Crowley said. Ladd said Crowley took his time getting to know each applicant and put them at ease during the application and interview process. Cognosante could “write the book” on how to host an intern, Ladd said. “Cognosante has been remarkable and exemplary,” Ladd said.

Promise to Humanity’s Message Continues to Spread with More Endorsements and More Engagement By: Megan Mandatta Shortly after receiving their long-awaited celebrity endorsement, these two Parkland brothers got in contact with one of the most influential people in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic. D r. A n t h o n y Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, recently met with Adam and Josh Buchwald via Zoom to discuss vaccines, slowing the spread of COVID-19 and more. The entire interview can be found here. Promise to Humanity began all the way back in May of this year when the Buchwald brothers could not stand idly by as the virus spread throughout the nation and world. They worried for their younger sister, Lauren, as she is at high-risk for complications if she contracts COVID-19. They detested the negligent partying and lack of social distancing around them, so they created Promise to Humanity. “[Today it is] a global movement asking individuals across the world to sign a pledge vowing to wear a mask, practice social distancing, and following all safety measures in an effort to save loved ones and slow the spread of the virus,” Adam explained to Fauci in their interview. Adam and Josh were connected to Dr. Fauci through the same agent that resulted in them meeting with Matthew McConaughey only a few weeks ago. They largely attribute their success with reaching both McConaughey and Dr. Fauci to their persistence through phone calls and emails. “Our pledge was built on [Dr. Fauci’s] recommendations and we asked how we could further his mission of slowing the spread of the virus through our pledge,” the Buchwald brothers noted. “We also are planning to reach out in the future for a follow-up interview with the intentions of getting more insight as the COVID-19 vaccines progress, continuing our mutual leadership, and finding more ways to promote Promise to Humanity throughout the world.” Dr. Fauci shed some light on the vaccine’s development citing 3 major clinical trials that are currently underway to test the safety of this medication. All 3 trials are in phase 3 of study. 4 out of the 6 or 7 trials are being subsidized by the government, according to Dr. Fauci. All of these trials are conducted with thousands of participants, yet only projec-

tions can be made in regard to when this vaccine would be able to be rolled out. Dr. Fauci predicts November or December is most likely to get an answer in regard to this. “If you ask me what is my level of optimism about this, I would say that I’m cautiously optimistic based on the data that I’ve seen from the Phase 1 study and from the animal study,” Dr. Fauci notes. “I’m cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine that will be effective and hopefully safe, and we’ll prove that sometime by the end of this calendar year. So, there’s a lot of optimism there, but no guarantee. Dr. Fauci and the Buchwald brothers continue their conversation throughout this 16-minute interview noting America could open again safely if everyone abided by recommended phased opening criteria. “And unfortunately, we didn’t do that,” Dr. Fauci explained. “And we had a big surge of cases if you recall… right now we’ve plateaued around 35,000-40,000 cases per day and that is still unacceptably high.” Adam and Josh Buchwald hope this recent interview and endorsement by someone as notable as Dr. Fauci will bolster their movement further on the national stage. Recently, they have surpassed 10,400 downloads of the pledge on their website. “Hopefully what you’re doing is going to help out to get people to wear masks, to physically distance, to avoid crowds, to do things outside, to wash their hands,” Dr. Fauci said. If people do that, we can avoid surges as we try to open up the economy and open up the country.” “Being able to talk to a government official like Dr. Fauci and having him sign our Promise to Humanity pledge is extremely exciting and has impacted our movement greatly,” the brothers commented. Next, Adam and Josh plan to continue their shift of focus to colleges around the nation through contacting sororities, fraternities, and various student organizations on campus. “We think it’s super important for students to get involved and make a difference in their communities,” the Buchwalds said. “We find it is beneficial to nominate others as our goal is to keep the chain flowing.” They concluded their message by stating a recent success they had with Viterbo University in Wisconsin hosting a Promise to Humanity event to encourage students to sign this pledge. dents who were among the more than 8,000 students who participated in Palm Beach Symphony educational programs last season. Nominations will be judged upon the nominee’s accomplishments and activities (academic, musical and in the community), future musical plans and financial need. As part of the final selection process, nominees will be asked to participate in an interview and an audition in which they will play two contrasting musical works in front of a panel of judges. The program is now in its third year and was renamed last year in honor of Lisa Bruna, the Symphony’s late director of marketing and communications, for her talents as a writer, her passion for helping others and her significant contributions to the Palm Beach Symphony. The submission deadline for nominations is Thursday, November 19 at 5 p.m. Complete details and the nomination form are available in the programs tab under music education at palmbeachsymhony.org.

Palm Beach Symphony is now accepting nominations for the Lisa Bruna B-Major Award which will bestow upon one to three high school seniors in Palm Beach County a major level instrument that will be suitable for college auditions and the start of a career in music. Eligible students must be current high school seniors in good academic standing who are planning to enter a music degree program at a university or institution of higher education. Students must be nominated by a music teacher or private instructor. “This award was established to give talented and deserving students an instrument worthy of professionals that will enhance their future education and career prospects by enabling them to grow more fully as musicians,” said Palm Beach Palm Beach Symphony CEO David McClymont. Last season, Palm Beach Symphony awarded two upper level instruments to the Lisa Bruna B-Major Award winner and runner-up as well as 48 other instruments to stu-

Eighteen-year-old Kasandra Diaz had a vision which she made come to fruition through a program called Young Entrepreneurs Academy [YEA!]. One where she will have the opportunity to compete at the 12th Annual Saunders Scholars National Competition on October 17th. Through the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, YEA! provides students, such as Diaz, with ample opportunity and skills in order to feel confident enough to create and pitch their inventions and/or business services to a panel of investors, which began at the front end of 2020. Diaz’s journey was first initiated when she found out about the program during her Business course at Boca Raton Community High School. “I was in my senior year when I found out about the program from my Business teacher,” Diaz said. “Automatically it struck my interest, so I decided to join. They had a certain criteria; you had to go for an interview in order to get accepted.” YEA! is a program for teens formed 10 years ago by the city of Boca Raton with the intent on helping today’s youth become tomorrow’s leaders. With a $800 admission fee, students not only get to potentially begin their career, but also learn and develop new skills and connections. Through mentorship and guidance, the program provides students with their respective mentors who come from the background of entrepreneurship and business management. Coordinators who are invested in the potential of these teens’ future. “There were three main mentors that stayed with us throughout the year that helped on different things,” Diaz said. “I had one who would help with financial, one wuld help with advertising and the other would help with business plans.” Foundation Manager, Sherese D. James Grow explained that entrepreneurship programs help an individual to develop who they are no matter if you walk into an internship or a potential job opportunity. “It grows every piece of you,” Grow said. Now, with the effects of COVID-19, the competition’s rules and regulations have been reconstructed in order to assure the safety of everyone involved. Having the competition live streamed on YEA’s Facebook page through EventBrite, not only will thousands of people have access to watch for free, but the contestants have a little more leeway when it comes to the requirements. “I think virtual helps a lot of people, it does help me also. They gave us different op-
portunities-- you can use notes,” Diaz said. She explained how under regular conditions the competition would have been held in New York and all of the contestant information would have had to have been memorized. “I feel comfortable, I’ve gotten adjusted to all the online and I’m super excited especially after my first competition which was locally,” Diaz said. Providing right-to-you services for contractors, Diaz’s mission with her new service is to bring tools, supplies, and resources to these businesses and companies. Some may not be able to stop what they’re doing in order to go pick something up to complete their job or task. This is where Diaz’s Quickdropped comes into convenience. Her dad owns a roofing company, so Diaz shared her own experiences on how her father would call her to get him supplies and pay her for it. “He paid for the convenience, he needed something now and he couldn’t disrupt his job or get one of his workers to leave the jobsite,” Diaz said. “With my app, Quickdropped, you can get it there on the spot.” Grow explained that some students come in knowing exactly what they want to do, maybe have an idea, or not at all. “Kasandra actually came in with an idea already,” she said. “So, from the idea that she had, we just asked questions to help her fine tune the direction she wants to go to really develop that idea.” As a Foundation Manager, Grow coordinates every piece of the YEA! program from the lessons, scheduling, activities, guest speakers who will attend the classes, the mentors, and the students-- managing the detailed parts of the entire program. Diaz didn’t always know she’d be an entrepreneur, in fact, her heart was set on the medical field. But once she saw that the potential for her service met opportunity through the right program she was set on making this happen. A lot of her family members are entrepreneurs so it was something that she knew she would be supported with-- her and her step dad came up with this idea together. “This is one that I’m really interested in and I’m going to start,” Diaz said. If you’re interested in watching the live competition in about one week, visit the YEA’s Facebook page or visit for more information. “This is something I will always say and forever say, entrepreneurship is not just about creating a business so you can make money,” Grow said. “Join an entrepreneurship program so that you can develop who you are professionally and personally.”

FAU Researchers Receive $1.3 Million NIH Grant for Stem Cell Research Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine hope to conquer a major limitation in the ability for scientists to engineer tissues for regenerative therapies for age-related and degenerative diseases. They recently received a $1.3 million grant from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a project that will identify novel mechanisms for how immature eye cells activate genes to become mature visual cells. The five-year (total grant $2.7 million), multiple principal investigator grant will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania. “This grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute will enable us to identify the gene regulation pathways activated to program immature stem-like cells of the eye lens to attain their mature form and transparent function,” said Marc Kantorow, Ph.D., principal investigator, assistant dean for graduate studies and a professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine. Kantorow and co-investigator Lisa Ann Brennen, Ph.D., research associate professor in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, have discovered that specific changes in DNA conformation during tissue development regulate the activation of genes needed to make a functional eye lens
through activation of novel DNA binding proteins called transcription factors. “With this grant, we plan to explore the genetic and cellular mechanisms controlling developmental DNA conformation-
al changes and will identify the transcription factors needed for eye lens formation,” said Brennan. Since DNA conformational changes activates the function of genes required for the development of a wide-array of tissues and organs, the outcome of this research will provide a basis for the development of regenerative therapies for diseases from retinal degeneration through heart disease. Because disruption of eye lens gene activation
causes cataract formation, the outcome of these studies has implications for preventing cataract, which is the leading cause of world blindness. “The promise of regenerative medicine relies on the ability of scientists to engineer transplantable tissues that can replace diseased or damaged tissues,” said Janet Robishaw, Ph.D., senior associate dean for research and chair of the Department of Biomedical Science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine. “This significant NIH funding will enable Dr. Kantorow and his team to gain a deeper understanding into complex cellular remodeling events. The information they gain from these studies will be applicable toward the development of novel tissue engineering strategies to develop ocular and other cells for replacement of damaged and diseased tissues.” According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataract is responsible for 51 percent of world blindness. Although cataracts can be surgically removed, in many countries barriers exist that prevent patients to access surgery. Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness. In the United States, an estimated 20.5 million (17.2 percent) Americans aged 40 years and older have cataract in one or both eyes, and 6.1 million (5.1 percent) have had their lens removed operatively. Cataract is clouding of the eye lens, which prevents clear vision.
Although most cases of cataract are related to the aging process, occasionally children can be born with the condition, or a cataract may develop after eye injuries, inflammation, and some other eye diseases. The Kantorow Laboratory focuses on understanding mechanisms of ocular development and disease. Specifically, his team focuses on the eye lens and the retina as models for understanding cell differentiation, cell function and disease mechanisms. Their work ranges from analysis of the functions of genes identified to cause ocular disease when mutated, to the direct effects of UVlight and other agents associated with the development of ocular disease on mitochondrial and other cellular functions. In addition to understanding how the functions of ocular cells are altered in disease states, the Kantorow Laboratory team examines how manipulation of key cell systems can be applied to treat and/or prevent ocular diseases including age-related cataract formation and macular degeneration that are the leading causes of visual disability. Knowledge gained from these studies to engineer cell systems and cells that can be transplanted into cells or tissues could restore the functions of damaged organs. The Kantorow Laboratory and research program have been continually funded by the NIH’s National Eye Institute for almost two decades.

SPORTS FAU Men’s Basketball Holds First FAU Said Goodbye To 19 Athletic Official Practice Department Positions for 2020-21 By: Brianna Smith
The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team held its first official practice for the 2020-21 season Wednesday. These Owls return nine players from 2019-20, including leading scorer and rebounder Jailyn Ingram. Ingram averaged 12 points and 5.4 rebounds a season ago coming off a significant knee injury. Michael Forrest and Karlis Silins are also back for FAU. Last season, Forrest was third on the squad in steals (34) and assists (52). Silins led the team in blocks (15) and three-point percentage (42.5%). Five newcomers took the court for the
Owls Wednesday. B.J. Greenlee, a sophomore who spent his freshman season at Minnesota, is the most experienced of the group. Freshmen Nicholas Boyd, Giancarlo Rosado, Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin joined him. Coach Dusty May is entering his third year with the Owls. Over the past two years, May has orchestrated consecutive winning records, the first at FAU since 1996-97. He is the fastest coach to reach 30 wins in FAU history. Assistants Akeem Miskdeen, Kyle Church and Todd Abernethy round out May’s staff.
PBA and Palm Beach County Sports Commission Selected to Host NCAA Championships Palm Beach Atlantic University and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission will once again serve as hosts of NCAA Championships after the NCAA announced selections for the latest four-year bid cycle. The two groups were once again selected to serve as hosts for Division II men’s and women’s golf national championships. Palm Beach County will be home to the 2025 men’s golf and 2026 women’s golf national championship events. Both events will be held at PGA National Resort which is home to the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour. For only the third time in its history, the NCAA undertook a site selection process where most of its championships were put out for bid at the same time. The result: The Association made more than 450 selections of host sites for preliminary rounds and final sites of predetermined October 16 - October 22, 2020
championships in Divisions I, II and III, with most to be held from 2022-23 through 202526. The NCAA received more than 3,000 bid submissions from NCAA member schools, conferences, sports commissions and cities vying to host predetermined rounds for 86 of the NCAA’s 90 championships. The sites were selected by the respective NCAA sports committees and approved by the divisional competition oversight and championships committees. PBA and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission were selected to host men’s and women’s golf national championships during the last bid cycle in April 2017 and hosted the 2019 women’s golf national championship at PGA National Resort. They are slated to host the 2021 men’s golf national championship at the same facility at the end of this academic year in May 2021.
Florida Atlantic University’s athletic department had to say goodbye to nineteen staff positions and members due to some reconsidering after the impact COVID-19 has had on the division. Figuring out what their next steps would be, the department had to come up with the best solution that will help propel the department into a successful season ahead– of course keeping the athletes at the top of their decisions. “Our student-athletes are always at the forefront in every decision we make,” Athletic Director Brian White said to WPTV. It wasn’t an easy decision, having to cut that many people and positions, but FAU’s new 2020-21 budget disallowed a solid foundation for them to maintain the
staff they already had. Because of the pandemic and all of the health precautionary requirements, the department had to make a cut somewhere in order to fund the different sports and the members of each team, including the coaching staff. “Today, it impacted some valued members of our Owl family. These were ver y difficult, very painful decisions,” White said. White mentioned that he and the rest of his colleagues tried to hold off on making such a tough decision, but ultimately it had to be made. What was very important to the athletic department was that the athletes remained on scholarship. Though they took a loss in staffing positions, FAU finally had their first game and victory of the season against the Charlotte 49ers.
