West Palm Beach CRA Seeking Restaurant/Lounge Operator for Newly Restored S unset Lounge Nav y Seal Commander to Speak at Annual Luncheon of The S alvation Army of Palm Beach County

The West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking an experienced restaurant/lounge operator to manage programming and operations for the historic Sunset Lounge venue in the City of West Palm Beach’s burgeoning Northwest District. Interested parties have until May 11, 2022 to submit proposals.

The Sunset Lounge was one of the premier African American entertainment venues in the South during the 1940s and 1950s and featured such notable artists as Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Ike and Tina Turner, Duke Ellington, and Nat King Cole.

The City, through the CRA, has invested $12.5 million to renovate the Sunset Lounge, which is located at 609 8th Street. The CRA is anticipated to comp l e t e i t s h i s t o r i c restoration of the venue by this winter. T he renovated lounge will feature a 150-seat bar, restaurant/supper club, state-of-thear t enter tainment venue, and a rooftop bar and patio, among other amenities. The CRA is seeking an operator that will develop and implement programming and events at the entertainment venue and manage food and beverage operations for the restaurant/supper club and bars.

“The renovated Sunset Lounge will honor and celebrate the rich African American and music histories of our city,” said Mayor Keith A. James. “As a future cultural destination, it will add to the vibrancy of the Historic Northwest. With comple-

tion of the project now in its final phases, I couldn’t be more excited about the future of the Sunset Lounge and our city.” The CRA has tapped award-winning and West Palm Beach-based design firm V Starr led by principal and CEO world-renowned tennis player Venus Williams. A full-service commercial and residential design firm, V Starr will lead the interior restoration of the Sunset Lounge. V Starr will look to historic images and artifacts as a reference to maintain the character of the establishment, while incorporating a modern, contemporary flair to match its elevated quality. The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County is honored to announce retired U.S. Navy Commander Grant Mann as keynote speaker for their 2022 Annual Luncheon to be held from 11:30AM-1PM at the Pelican Club on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Entitled “The Ties That Bind,” the luncheon aims at gathering local charities and nonprofits around the theme of philanthropic partnerships.

C o m m a n d e r Mann was born in Toronto, Canada, and raised in Vero Beach, Florida. Upon his enlistment in 1986, Mann immediately reported to Boot Camp and was subsequently assigned to the USS Harry W. Hill. After two years on board, he was selected and attended Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training Class 162, graduating in October 1989. His operational overseas deployments were in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Bosnia, Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, and East Africa. Commander Mann’s enlisted operational assignments include two tours as a Boatswain Mate, two deployments at SEAL Team FIVE, and seven years at SEAL Team SIX. He is the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal and numerous other awards over his 34 years of service.

FAU Celebrates Dazzling 2022 President ’s G ala

Florida Atlantic University recently celebrated the 2022 President’s Gala in the Martin F. and Jane Greenberg Foundation Tower of FAU Stadium at its Boca Raton campus.

The 2022 gala celebrated FAU’s Diamond Anniversary and more than $2 million was raised in support of student scholarships.

T h e g a l a wa s a spectacular evening, spread over three levels of the stadium, and featured gourmet dining, a full open bar, fireworks, live entertainment, red carpet photo-ops and more.
