Eric Gooden – Getting Young Voters Engaged

During the 2012 presidential elections, Boca Raton residents got a small taste of the intensity that goes on live, when President Barack Obama and his opponent, Gov. Mitt Romney came to Lynn University for their final debate. As the school prepared to host this historical event, it is standard procedure to use people as stand-ins for the candidates, to make sure the stage, lighting, position of chairs, etc., are ready for the big day. For this reason, Eric Gooden was chosen to stand-in for Obama and A.J. Mercincavage for Romney during the rehearsal. For Gooden, this was only the beginning of his “political” journey.

Born in Detroit, to a Caucasian mother and African-American father, Gooden moved around quite a bit during his childhood. After his parents’ divorce when he was 5 years old, Gooden divided his time between living with his dad in Detroit and with his mother in New York City. Having the experience of living in such diverse environments, when asked about his most recent settlement Gooden says, “Boca definitely tops the other cities, with its beautiful weather, beaches and neighborhoods.” see page 5

Wings of Freedom Soar into Boca Airport

By Jason Schwartz Three planes with a long history of service in the United States military made a stop at the Boca Raton Airport last weekend as part of a traveling aviation museum honoring World War II veterans and providing a living history experience to younger generations.

Aviation enthusiasts and history buffs had the opportunity to tour or take flight in the rare, historic World War II aircrafts.

“Without tours like this so many people would never get a chance to experience history,” said Francisco Rivera, an eighth grader at Logger’s Run Middle School and a member of the Civil Air Patrol.

“There are classes for sure but seeing it first-hand makes things much more better.”

Control P-51C Mustang Betty Jane fighter were on display at Signature Aviation Feb. 14 through 16. The stop in Boca Raton was part of the Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour, an annual 110-city nationwide tour in its 25th year of showcasing rare aircraft.

All painted in traditional bomber style, each plane has its own unique name and markings. The sides of the B-17 “Nine O Nine” and P-51 “Betty Jane” have swastikas representing enemy aircraft taken down by the respective plane. The B-24 “Witchcraft” features names of honor crew and distinguished flying command lining its sides in honor of the deserving veterans.

The B-17G - one of eight in flying condition in the United States - is one of the most recognizable bomber aircraft of World War II. The B-24J and Dual Control P-51C are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the world.

Unemployment rates, crime, income growth, the cost of living, and cultural opportunities were the specific data points analyzed to assemble the list.

Here is the data for the voter turnout in each corresponding city, which Forbes’ has listed as ‘America’s Most Livable Cities,’ for municipal elections: - Ogden, Utah, 2013: Registered Voters: 29,454 Voted: 3,922 (13% Turnout) - Washtenaw County, Michigan (Which includes Ann Arbor), 2013: Registered Voters: 172,720 Voted: 22,889 (13% Turnout) - Allegheny County, Pa. (Which includes Pittsburgh), 2013: Registered Voters: 877,023 Voted: 180,867 (20% Turnout) - Lincoln, Nebraska, 2013: Registered Voters: 161, 476 Voted: 37,078 (22% Turnout) - Manchester, NH, 2013: Registered Voters: 61,176 Voted: 15,451 (25% Turnout) - Norwalk, Conn., 2013: Registered Voters: 44,407 Voted: 16, 781 (37% Turnout) Unfortunately, Boca Raton did not make the list.

According to the supervisor of elections in Palm Beach County, Susan Bucher, 11% of registered voters participated in the 2012 Boca Raton Uniform Municipal Election.

Less voters partook in the 2011 Boca Raton Uniform Municipal Election, with a staggering 7% of

registered voters determining the current mayor of Boca Raton, Susan Whelchel.

Perhaps the first step that needs to occur in the development of Boca Raton should be to start in-house.

Rather than contracting outside vendors and corporations to expand the city, gathering the community and getting them to participate in civic life could ignite a municipal spark.

There is a substantial need to raise the percentage of municipal voter participation within the city of Boca Raton.

Largest Free Beach Party for People with Disabilities set for March 22

By CRA News Service More than 6,000 children and adults are expected to attend the 6th annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities on Saturday, March 22.

Often called the “Miracle on the Intracoastal,” the free, fun-day for people with intellectual and/or physical challenges, their caregivers and family members will be at Spanish River Park, 3100 North Ocean Boulevard (A1A). It will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Guests are invited to enjoy halfhour boat rides aboard dozens of yachts on loan the day by their owners, mostly members of Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club. The event also offers a BBQ lunch, nonstop entertainment, and an array of activities for children and adults, including a Kids Fun Zone, exhibits, and dancing.

“This is a day that celebrates diversity and recognizes people for their abilities versus their disabilities,” said Jay Van Vechten, the event’s founder.

This year’s title sponsor is Unicorn Children’s Foundation, a non-profit, dedicated to education, awareness, and research on behalf of children and young adults with developmental, communication and learning disorders.

“Unicorn Children’s Foundation strives every day to inspire and empower those with Neurodiversity to lead productive lives,” said Sharon Alexander, executive director of the Boca Raton based Unicorn.

“Therefore, we feel Unicorn and the Bash are an ideal team to make a difference for all people facing the challenges of basic living. Our joint efforts emphasize possibilities, not disabilities.”

New in 2014 will be the addition of numerous low impact sporting

events created for the Bash by the Recreational Rehabilitation team from Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital, at the Delray Medical Center. Guests wishing to participate in an activity will be evaluated at the Bash reception area by the Pinecrest team and directed to an appropriate activity organized and overseen by hospital staff.

In January, the Gold Coast Public Relations Council named the Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities the Best Community Service Program in South Florida for the third consecutive year.

Started in 2008, the Boating & Beach Bash has grown from 350 attendees in its first year, to 2013’s record breaking total of 5,500 guests and 500 volunteers.

“Our volunteers are extraordinary,” Van Vechten said.

“They bring a level of dedication, support and compassion to this event seldom seen anywhere.”

Bash organizers are accepting donations from those who recognize the importance of the special needs community, which in Palm Beach County accounts for one in four residents who have a disability, seen or unseen. It is often the case with children with intellectual challenges.

“So many families move to Florida because it can be an easier place to raise a child with special needs in this kinder, gentler climate,” Alexander said. “The Bash provides additional opportunities for those with diverse needs to take advantage of our beautiful surroundings and the abundant out-of-door options they afford to enjoy land and sea recreational activities on a year round basis.”

Fundraising event to Benefit Autism Programs at FAU

By CRA News Service Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities will host the fifth annual “Wings of Hope” reception, dinner and silent auction on Feb. 27 at the Addison in Boca Raton.

Honorees will be Glen and Tricia Stein, co-chair of the CARD constituency board. The couple has a son on the autism spectrum. Proceeds will support CARD’s services for children and adults with autism or autism spectrum disorders.

“We are so grateful to Tricia and Glen Stein for all they have done for FAU CARD and the autism community in South Florida,” said Jack Scott, executive director of CARD in a release. “They find so many ways to make a real difference in the lives of children with autism.

Their support and the help of their many generous friends, and other friends of autism, allow us to continue to expand our services to local children and adults with autism, and their families.”

Housed in the College of Education, FAU CARD serves as a multidisciplinary learning laboratory for members of the community including FAU undergraduate and graduate students. One of seven

such centers in the state, CARD currently serves more than 2,900 clients, most diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders such as Asperger syndrome, pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder.

FAU CARD acts as a clearinghouse of information, and its services and programs reflect a strong belief in early intervention and including people with autism in the community.

The program also optimizes the potential of people with autism and related disabilities by enabling them to learn, work, communicate and socialize in the community.

In addition to locations in Boca Raton and Jupiter, CARD’s specially equipped van serves as a mobile assessment clinic by bringing FAU CARD professionals to various locations to provide free screenings to children, ages 18 months to 5, who present signs of autism and other developmental disabilities.

Service area includes Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.

What’s the Value of Young Black Boy’s Life?

In the wake of the recent “Loud music” verdict in Jacksonville where another young black boy was gunned down, a local parent asked me, “Is the life of a young black boy worth anything in America?”

Although I was prepared for most possible questions regarding the two most recent high-profile murder trials involving young black males, this one stumped me.

As a mentor who has worked directly with more than 2,000 youth in Palm Beach County over more than two decades, I quickly began dialoging with some of my teens.

After such, I offer this theory: In Palm Beach County, and perhaps in America, being a young, black male from a poor neighborhood is an exhausting and often enraging experience.

You lead a life of limitations. Not only do you suffer from limited life prospects, you are also a victim of other people’s limited expectations.

The most visible example of these limited expectations is demonstrated in the statistics, which show that a black male is twice more likely to be stopped and searched than a white male.

Take New York City for example.

Of the nearly 700,000 “stop and frisks” conducted by police in New York last year, 87 percent of the people stopped were black or Hispanic. Yet only about 12 percent of the stops led to arrests or even a citation.

High rates of arrest, incarceration and unexplained stops by police send the message to young black men that no matter who you are, what you

do, whether you play by the rules or not, you’re going to be viewed and treated like a criminal and you’re likely to wind up in jail one way or another.

Let’s look at four tragic incidents over the past 60 years – the beating of Emmett Till in 1955, the fatal shooting of Lt. Col. Lemuel Penn in July 1964 in Athens, Ga., the February 2012 slaying of Trayvon Martin in Sanford and the November 2012 shooting of Jordan Davis in Jacksonville.

Till’s murder was probably one of the most sensational in American history. Two white half-brothers, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant kidnapped the 14-year-old from his great uncle’s home and murdered him for grabbing the hand of, whistling and perhaps making suggestive remarks to Bryant’s young white wife. Till, a Chicagoan who was visiting family in Money, Miss., was buying bubblegun at Bryant’s store. Several days later, his brutally beaten and horribly disfigured body was fished from the Tallahatchie River.

An all-white jury acquitted the two suspects, who later admitted to the killing.

Only 50 years ago in the early morning, Penn and his U.S. Army Reserve buddies, Maj. Charles Brown and Lt. Col. John Howard, were heading home after two weeks of training at Fort Benning, Ga., when they stopped to switch drivers in the town of Athens.

All three men were educators in Washington. Penn was an assistant superintendent in charge of five vocational high schools, and Brown

and Howard were teachers.

Unbeknownst to them, KKK members, on duty for out-of-town licence tags, observed their 1959 Chevy with Washington, D.C., plates, followed them through town and opened fired killing Penn.

Nine days earlier, President Lyndon Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law.

This landmark legislation banned racial discrimination in hiring and ended segregation in public places and many businesses. Still, local Klan members in Athens had heard rumors that Georgia might become a “testing ground” for the new law.

What happened next is as shocking to a modern American as the murder itself.

One of the suspects was given immunity for testifying for the prosecution. But two others were charged with first degree murder. A jury of older white men found them not guilty. However, in the first case of its kind, the FBI filed a federal case against six local Klansmen of violating the victim’s Civil Rights.

The pair were convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. They served about six years in federal prison.

Only months ago the country was reeling from the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial after he was found not guilty for gunning down a black Martin, who was walking home from a grocery store while visiting his father in an Orlando suburb.

And nine months after that shooting, Michael Dunn opened fire on four black teenagers in a car because they were listening to what

Dunn called loud “thug” music.

Dunn demanded that the boys turn down their music but they defied him. Dunn claimed he saw the barrel of a gun coming from the car. Dunn reached into his glove box for a pistol and fired 10 rounds, killing Davis.

Police did not recover a shotgun, or any other weapon, from the boys’ car.

After four days of deliberation, the 12 jurors found Dunn guilty of three counts of attempted seconddegree murder and a count of firing into an occupied car. But they were deadlocked on the first-degree murder charge, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.

Not much has changed since Till’s murder.

Whatever our feelings on the verdicts are, we have to deal with the facts. Too many of our young boys are senselessly being cut short.

Every day, young men are being enticed to join gangs because they feel isolated, undervalued and not part of the system. Regardless of the verdict, the outcome of “lawful killing” has created, for many of the boys I work with, a sense that a black life is worth very little.

Will there be riots? I doubt it.

But, more worryingly, the sense I get from these young men is that this outcome will have a slow and insidious impact on our youth and our communities and further fuel the vicious cycle that leads young men to gangs, and often ultimately to prison or the grave.

Changing An Entire Industry One Person At A Time Have you observed practices or policies within your industry you do not like, things that seem wrong or inappropriate, yet they persist because “everybody does them”?

What would it take, do you think, to make changes and correct these questionable practices?

In Ken Eldred’s book, The Integrated Life, he addresses circumstances like this, offering an illustration of some men that took a stand against unethical business tactics. Eldred tells about two London grocers in the Middle Ages that decided the practice common of that day – using dishonest scales and weights in measuring meat and other food items – was unacceptable to God. What these men did was simple: They began testing and verifying each other’s weighing scales and holding one another accountable for adhering to God’s standards

as expressed in the Bible, rather than bowing to the prevailing the standards of the day.

This was a bold move, even for that day, one that could easily have resulted in their small companies being forced out of business by unscrupulous competitors. Instead, God honored their commitment to integrity, and their faithfulness led to the formation of The Livery Companies, trade associations that have continued to this day and still hold their members to high ethical standards.

Why were these grocery store owners so determined to combat cheating customers through inaccurate measuring practices?

They may have had numerous reasons, but one verse from the Bible, Proverbs 11:1, clearly teaches,”The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight.” The men took this

scriptural passage to mean exactly what it said and acted accordingly.

To avoid any confusion, or a contention that this verse was taken out of context, the same message is stated in slightly different ways elsewhere in Proverbs: “Honest scales and balances are from the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making” (Proverbs 16:11).

“Differing weights and differing measures – the Lord detests them both”(Proverbs 20:10).

“The Lord detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him”(Proverbs 20:23).

A more general principle the men may have considered is the so-called “Golden Rule.” As Jesus told His followers, “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets”(Matthew 7:12). The

grocers might have realized they would not want to be cheated by someone using scales that measured goods they received inaccurately.

But the bottom line for them was not profit – it was recognizing that ultimately they were accountable to God. Perhaps the issues you have observed in your industry do not involve improper measuring practices. Maybe they involve promises and commitments that are not fulfilled, improper billing for products or services, or not paying financial obligations in a timely manner. You might think of other examples. But let me ask: What would happen if you and some of your industry peers banded together to change or raise the ethical standards of your industry? Would you have the courage to do so?

Plan Carefully, Do Well!

Several people I know, even in responsible positions, complain a lot about how busy they are when, in reality, what can be observed is that they don’t organize their time, nor distribute the tasks they expect to fulfill in the course of a day, a week, a month, or even longer!

Because they view themselves as lords of their own time, they wrongfully assume that all necessary tasks will be fulfilled in spite of their excesses devoted to personal fun, when those moments should first be given to the completion of priorities in their schedule.

Similarly, many arrive at their

places of work when they choose to get there instead of scheduling their appointments and other functions in a manner that would best guarantee the best possible results.

For years I’ve followed the popular affirmation that “if you fail to plan you’re planning to fail.”

In my teen years I also learned a saying from the first century Roman philosopher, Seneca, which remains with me ever since. He had wisely declared that “time is the only thing of which it is a virtue to be covetous.”

Nevertheless. far too many people operate daily as if whatever

amount of time they throw away they can easily regain. But it is not so! Any task that needs to be done is best fulfilled right away, rather than postponed to a time which may never come, or if it comes, it may arrive with hindrances which cannot be overcome, or be affected by unhappy surprises which spring up on one, quite suddenly!

The best way is to operate “clock-wise,” i.e. to ascertain the length of time it will take for the achievement of any project, and devote that amount exclusively for that until its successful conclusion.

Usually, things performed in a hurry lose a lot in quality and

in ultimate satisfaction, both for the doer and for those benefitting from the final product. Punctuality should not be shunned; it applies to when a project is started, how its production is carried on, and when its final delivery is a reality!

In life, minutes and seconds should be viewed with equal seriousness as months, seasons, and years, and what is accomplished within any time-frame, is best brought to fruition with a sense of urgency instead of a disorganized, unplanned operation. You can plan carefully, and do well in all you attempt!

2, Including Girlfriend, Charged in Apparent Accident Shooting Boca Raton Police Blotter

By CRA News Service More than two months after a man was shot and killed in an apparent accidental shooting while he was hanging out with friends in Boca Raton, police have charged two of those friends with his death.

Police investigators determined that Erin Steele, 20, and Joshua Henry, 23, were responsible for the Dec. 1 shooting of Justin Holt at Gables of Town Place Apartments, 21445 Town Lakes Drive.

Police arrested both at their homes in Pompano Beach and charged them with manslaughter by culpable negligence Investigators say that Madison Flint and her friend Henry were hanging out in her apartment when two other friends Steele and Justin Holt came over.

Henry, according to police, brought a handgun to the apartment and was showing it to the group.

Investigators say that the group was dry firing or firing the empty pistol.

At one point, Henry re-loaded

the gun and put it on a counter, according to police. Later that night, Steele picked up the gun and fired it at Holt, her boyfriend, police said.

Holt was shot in the chest. Everyone present gave the same version of events, police reported.

Holt was taken to Delray Medical Center where he later died.

Police said Steele had smoked marijuana earlier in the evening and had a high level of THC in her system.

Henry and Steele were being held without bond in the Broward Jail, awaiting transfer to Palm Beach County at presstime.

Shortly after the shooting, Holt’s family said they thought it was accidental and harbored no bad feelings for Steele. But upon learning she and Henry had been charged, Holt’s grandfather, Michael DiFiore, called the news a surprise and said the family had no comment.

“We’re just going to let things happen as they happen,” DiFiore said.

Police: Boca Woman Lied About Turnpike Rape

By CRA News Service A Boca Raton woman who told authorities that a man raped her on the side of Florida’s Turnpike after he stopped to help her fix a flat tire, made up the story, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned.

Alexandria Westover, 21, of the 17000 block of Hampton Blvd., west of the city, was charged with false report of a crime and perjury not during official proceedings. She was released from the Palm Beach County Jail to her own custody a day later.

Westover originally told authorities on Feb. 13 that she was driving north between the Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter exits when she had to stop her car to fix a flat tire near the Indiantown exit, according to her arrest report.

After sitting in her car for about 30 minutes, a man pretending to be a Good Samaritan, pulled over and offered to help her. She described the man, as in his 40s, Hispanic, 5-foot-10, with black and gray hair and bushy eyebrows.

The man told her to get something out of her car to help remove the hubcap, and when she reached into her

backseat, he shoved her in and raped her, she told investigators.

Westover’s story began to fall apart after Florida Highway Patrol investigators checked their records for her tag and car along the Turnpike, which is heavily recorded. There however was no recorded video of Westover’s car on the Turnpike from northern Florida to the Florida Keys during the time frame she claimed, investigators said.

Still, she stuck to her story.

On Thursday, Westover’s stepfather told authorities that she admitted to lying about being on the Turnpike.

She later told investigators that she made up the story because she did not show up for work at her great uncle’s house and did not want to get in trouble, investigators said.

Investigators from the Sheriff ’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol and Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office’s special victims unit spent more than 100 hours reviewing surveillance video and working the case, authorities said.

Hernandez arrested W/M Richard Gonzalez after he struck his boyfriend (69 yoa) with a closed fist in the face during a domestic disturbance. TOT CJ. After receiving a BOLO from Palm Beach Gardens regarding a dark SUV committing gas station burglaries, the TAC team was conducting surveillance BP`s. While doing so, a vehicle matching this was stopped after sitting at the gas station several minutes for no apparent purpose. A search revealed marijuana, paraphernalia, and several stolen ID`s, credit cards, checks.

W/M was arrested for DUI after a traffic stop. Breath refused.

TOT County Jail Suspect was arrested for trespass after warning then was subsequently arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer.

W/M Michael A. Ryniker (7/3/85) was arrested for DUI after a traffic stop. He refused to provide a breath sample. T.O.T. PBCJ. B/F was arrested after she pushed her boyfriend during a domestic altercation. TOT CJ. W/M arrested for DUI following a traffic stop at 2000 N. Federal Hwy. Following a traffic stop Officer Graham arrested B/M Kristopher Burnett for DUI. Breath refused. TOT CJ. Casey Walsh, Lauren Wolter and Julia Browning were all arrested after they took $342.00 worth of clothing/jewelry from Sears (5900 W. Glades Rd). TOT CJ. B/M was arrested for possession of marijuana (51 grams) with intent to sell or deliver on school property and possession of paraphernalia (3 counts).

On 02/13/14 at approximately 0000 hours an unknown subject broke into unlocked vehicles at 301 NE 5th AVE, 434 NE 3rd St and 422 NE 3rd ST. An unknown white male was captured on video (400 NE 3rd St) attempted to break into one vehicle at 400 NE 3rd St and two vehicles at 401 NE 3rd ST (vehicles locked). The video shows a white male approximately 25 years old, 170 lbs, with dark short hair, wearing a white tank top and basket ball shorts. CNN Hero Partners With Village Academy

By CRA News Service Estella Pyfrom will bring her famous Brilliant Bus, a high-tech mobile classroom, to Village Academy toddlers starting in early March.

Pyfrom, who received international recognition recently as a 2013 Top Ten CNN Hero, is a former Palm Beach County guidance counselor who used her retirement money to purchase and equip a traveling bus with state-of-the-art computers to help bridge the digital divide.

“We’ve got to start young,” says Pyfrom, who will show two-year-olds her equipment and allow them to work on her computers starting in early March. “This is one of the youngest groups I’ll have worked with. I’m very excited.”

Delray Beach’s Village Academy is one of two schools in the country with a student population whose ages range from four-months-old to high school. Pyfrom thought it would be a good idea to start introducing the very young to her bus. see page 12

Taking place in Old School Square Park, the event will feature its popular chili tasting made by the best chefs in town, a heated competition, and live performances by local blues band, Hiedi and the El Cats.

“This is one of the most anticipated events at the GreenMarket,” said Lori Nolan Delray GreenMarket manager. “It is always fun to see if past winners can keep their title and bragging rights year to year and see how creative our chefs can be!”

The competition will be spilt into three categories traditional, new age and vegetarian. Chefs at each station have five gallons of chili and provide two-ounce samples for excited chili foodies. Attendees will select the best chili for the ‘People’s Choice Award,’ and three professional chef judges will select first, second and third place winners. The victors will receive trophies and bragging rights for their hard work in the kitchen.

Admission is free but anyone wanting to compete in the cook-off must pay a $10 entry fee.

Residents will be allowed to ask questions at the March 3 forum at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Ave. Start time is 7 p.m.

“This Forum is an opportunity for residents to engage with candidates for the City Commission about their environmental issues and to learn more about their plans for addressing them if elected,” said Joe Snider, founder of Delray Beach Green, a non-profit organization.

The organization held its first Candidates Green Forum about local environmental issues in March 2009 at the Colony Hotel. It was the highest attendance of all candidate forums, organizers said. CNN Hero Partners With Village Academy

Delray Beach’s Village Academy is one of two schools in the country with a student population whose ages range from four-months-old to high school. Pyfrom thought it would be a good idea to start introducing the very young to her bus. Roughly 99 percent of the school’s population qualify for free and reduced lunch, which makes them significantly underserved, a major contributor to the gap in computer and technology access. Estella’s Brilliant Bus will visit the school two days each week.

“I can’t wait to see their faces. Just think, a bus with computer screens throughout,” says Village Academy Principal Guarn Sims.

“To me it’s like something from

a sci-fi show, to them, I don’t know what it’s going to look like,” he adds.

“I am so grateful to Mrs. Pyfrom for sharing her mobile education with us here at Village.”

Once a child who picked beans in the fields of Belle Glade, Pyfrom completed college and earned her master’s degree. Having beaten the odds herself, she’s all geared up to help others. Her bus serves children as well as adults.

As the economy spiraled downward, Pyfrom noticed more and more children lacked access to computers. The digital gap already was significant; the poor economy was widening it even more. So, Pyfrom created the bus, which travels around as an educational resource center for the underprivileged and underserved communities.

The bus has sleek computers and monitors, high-speed Internet, swivel chairs that are adjustable for small children or larger adults, a huge monitor in the front of the bus, a microphone, and a laptop in the back of the bus.

Pyfrom addresses other community issues as well, and has even turned her Brilliant Bus into a food pantry on wheels by partnering with Feeding South Florida to distribute essential needs to more than 3,000 individuals each month.

She was recently named one of JM Family Enterprises, Inc., 2014 African-American Achievers.

Mary Whittemore, a leader of St. Paul’s Green Team ministry, said the city needs to ensure a balance between development and sound environmental stewardship.

“We need to elect good stewards of God’s creation, because if we don’t, we risk losing our quality of life,” she said.

Yalmaz Siddiqui, senior director, Environmental and Supplier Diversity Strategy at Office Depot, will moderate the forum for his third consecutive year.

Palm Beach POPS Tribute Concert in Memory of Maestro Bob Lappin Packs the Kravis Center

Entertainment Skip Sheffield It’s Never Too Late for Love Again It’s not easy being single again, not matter what your age or where you live.

“Gloria” is a film from Chile.

The title character is a woman of “a certain age;” in this case probably mid-50s.

Paula Garcia, who won the Silver Bear Best Actress Award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, plays Gloria, a woman divorced for 12 years and still looking.

Gloria is an outgoing woman who works at an office in Santiago.

At night she gets dressed up and goes to dance clubs. Gloria is still attractive. She gets hit on a lot and seems to enjoy the attention. Then one night she meets Rodolfo (Sergio Hernandez), a tall, handsome man about her same age. It’s one of those love-at-first-sight moments, and it’s

not long until Gloria and Rodolfo are head over heels and rolling in each other’s arms.

Written and directed by Sebastian Lelio, “Gloria” is unabashedly sexy, and Paula Garcia is not afraid to bare her all. Her character however is less certain of the passion she feels. Rodolfo has only been divorced a year, and his life his still dominated by his ex-wife and three demanding daughters.

“Gloria” is funny, especially when she challenges Rodolfo. It is also melancholy when things don’t turn out as hoped.

“Gloria” is never a downer though.

It offers the upbeat hope that passion never dies as long as you stay open to the prospect.

A Glimpse Inside Occupied Palestine We don’t get many Palestinian films in these parts. “Omar” is the Best Foreign Film nominee for Palestine at this year’s Academy Awards. Palestinian director Hany Abu Assad controversial 2006 film “Paradise Now” was about suicide bombers. “Omar” is about the equally thorny problem of life in the Occupied Territories of Israel.

Omar (Adam Bakri) is a Palestinian baker who routinely scales a tall separation wall to visit his girlfriend Nadja (Leem Lubany).

Nadja is still in school, but Omar is so smitten he wants to marry herthe sooner the better.

Nadia’s older brother Tarek (Eyad Hourani) is a fiery Palestinian “freedom fighter” who is also Omar’s best friend, as is fellow childhood friend Amjad (Samer Bisharat).

The guys act innocent by day, but by night they go out hunting the hated Israeli soldiers who enforce the law. One night one of the men kills an Israeli soldier. Everything February 21, through February 27, 2014

immediately turns life-and-death serious.

“Jasoos” is an Arab word that means “traitor,” but in the volatile Israel-Palestine conflict it is something much worse. Israel’s Shin Bet, which is kind of like their FBI, relies on jasoos to spill the beans on terrorist activity.

Agent Rami (Waleed F. Zuaiter) is the Shin Bet handler assigned to Omar. If Omar or his friends do not rat, Rami is not doing his job.

In essence everyone is doing their job, it’s just that everything is at murderous cross purposes. It’s a lose-lose situation, and unless something is resolved, the eternal conflict between Israel and Palestine will remain just that: eternal.

It comes as no surprise “Omar” won Best Film at the Dubai Film Festival, but it also won “Un Certain Regard” at Cannes in recognition of its deft, even entertaining handling of a tragic situation.

Watch your Tone!

This is Part 2 of our Series on Confidence.

Last week, I explained how your body language can be a big part of your confidence. We all know that attackers and bullies can immediately pick up on your confidence or lack thereof if you have poor body language.

They can also pick up on your confidence levels from the tone of your voice and even what words you use. Let’s start simple, Mom or Dad or your Boss ask you to “clean your room or do a unlikely chore” your response lack enthusiasm and confidence. You give them that long and drawn out, “oooohhhh kaaaaay”.

Compare that response with a Confident firm tone is a “YES SIR!” Now you sound confident in what you will be doing and in turn they will have confidence and trust in you. So now a bully comes up. Gives you a push and you tell him to leave you alone. Did you look down and whisper it? He pushes you again!

Now you are upset! So you scream angrily “ LEAVE ME ALONE!” Odds are He will push you again. See you must find the balance between Shy and quiet, and Angry and Mad tonality. When I was in the Marines, the last thing I wanted to do was follow order that were yelled at me because the Leader was angry and scared. His volume didn’t convince me, it was his tone!

A Strict, Firm Tone will imply you are confident, serious, and mean what you say.

Combine that with a confident body posture and you will be well on your way to having the selfconfidence to become successful! ~~~~~ Time to get that

They invest hundreds of dollars in supplements, shots, training videos, gym memberships and other 90 days or less ideas. In over 15 years in being involved in fitness and training, there is one thing that is remains truly effective. Nutrition. I do not claim to be a nutrition expert, but what you eat plays the biggest part in our health and in our body shape.

Here are some quick tips you may have already know to help you see the results you want, combined with regular exercise of course.

• Vegetables, Vegetables, Vegetables. Have one serving of Vegetables with every meal, not just dinner.

• More LEAN protein, recommended diet is your body weight / 2.2. That is how many grams a day you should be eating.

• Prepare your meals in advance!

• Water! Water! Water! Don’t be afraid of water weight. Drinking water helps control food cravings and replenishes what we use up while exercising.

The hardest part about eating healthy and clean is the discipline.

A healthy grocery basket will cost nearly double of an unhealthy grocery basket. Then there is the time. My suggestion. Prepare your meals weekly. Take the time to precook protein during the week, so we don’t find ourselves running through a fast food place for the convenience. A Florida premiere is the centerpiece of a well-rounded theatrical season at the popular Coral Springs Theatre The Broward Stage Door Theatre has announced its line-up of productions for 2014-2015. For its 21st season the company, headed by Derelle Bunn and Dave Torres has planned an exciting mix of comedies, musicals, and straight plays that will appeal to their broad base of theatre patrons.

Stage Door’s season begins in August with Leonard Gershe’s award-winning playButterflies are Free (August 1st – September 14th, Theatre 1). The play’s plot revolves around a Manhattan blind man whose controlling mother disapproves of his relationship with a free-spirited hippie. The title was inspired by a passage in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House: “I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies.”

The Last Romance (October 10th – November 23rd, Theatre 2) by New Jersey born and raised Joe DiPietro, is set in Hoboken, New Jersey. The play is a warm, tender, and very funny tale of late love between two senior citizens. “The play adroitly explores relationships between men and women in their golden years,

as well as how the invisible ties of family often tie our hearts harder and faster than any love affair. A tale that mixes heartbreak with its humor and opera with the laughter…” (Naples News) DiPietro is also the author of I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, Memphis (2010 Tonyaward winner for Best Musical), All Shook Up, The Toxic Avenger and Over the River and Through the Woods, which will run this April 4th through May 11th as part of Stage Door’s current season.

Five Guys Named Moe (December 10 to January 18, 2015, Theatre 2) is a musical with a book by Clarke Peters and lyrics and music by Louis Jordan. Nomax, whose girlfriend has left him and who is without money, finds Big Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Eat Moe, No Moe, and Little Moe emerging from his 1930s-style radio to comfort him. They sing the hit songs of songwriter and saxophonist Jordan, whose new slant on jazz paved the way for rock and roll in the 1950s. Five Guys Named Moe is ‘an exhilarating, allembracing theatrical experience, complete with some uproarious audience participation that’ll have

spectators leaping out of their seats to join the celebration!’

Securing the rights to of Old Jews Telling Jokes was a real coup for Stage Door. “We are delighted to get the Florida Premiere of Old Jews Telling Jokes,” says Bunn. “It played in New York and Chicago and sold out for long runs, and no one could get the rights for Florida.

Greyson International Inc. Enhancing Your Homes Curb Appeal Through Your Landscape Ever judge a book by its cover? Well many neighbors and homebuyers do just that. People will begin creating an opinion before they even step foot inside. Many things affect the curb appeal of a home…fresh paint, clean driveways, updated front doors, etc. But there is one thing that plays a major role in how people view your home before they pull up…the landscape. A few ways to spruce up your landscape curb appeal is: 1. Outdoor Lighting: Low voltage landscape lighting makes a huge impact on your homes curb appeal while providing safety and security. Fixtures can add accent lighting to trees or the house can illuminate a walking path.

2. A Small Garden: Gardens can add a welcoming feel and colorful

appeal to any home exterior. A layered or staggered look with pops of color may work best, depending on your unique home.

3. Freshen-up Planter Beds: Freshen up your garden beds by planting flowers, pulling weeds, pruning and adding new mulch or decorative rock to restore color. If you have stone or brick borders as part of your garden bed, consider cleaning and resetting any pieces that are soiled or dislodged. If your borders are old and tired looking, try upgrading to stone or a decorative cast concrete edging system.

4. Add Outdoor Pieces: Give your yard a little spunk by adding weather resistant birdbaths or sculptures. The placement can compliment a nicely landscaped area or garden.

5. Well Manicured Lawn: It is important to keep your yard well maintained. Nice freshly cut grass with well manicured bushes can make the difference between a Buyer stepping into your home or just driving right by it.

What Are You Running From - and Toward?

In today’s hectic, even frenetic, business world, it seems everyone is running, desperately trying to get to wherever they are headed as quickly as possible. Where are you running? And even better question might be, what are yourunning to – and what are you running from?

Len, a friend of mine, recently gave a talk and raised these questions. I asked if I could borrow his key points and adapt them for “Monday Manna.” He called the talk “Four Qualities of the Man of God,” and I thought they also would apply to “the business and professional person of God.” Even if you do not think of yourself in that way, stay with me because these principles have relevance for us all.

The talk centered on a passage from the New Testament of the Bible, in which the apostle Paul writes to his disciple, Timothy.

After asserting, “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs,” Paul adds,“But as for you, man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:10-12).

This passage raises four questions all business and professional leaders should consider: What do you run from? We can run from many things – past failures; personal, professional, even financial obligations; bad experiences and unpleasant memories; stressful situations. But do we run from circumstances

that tempt us to compromise our ethics or betray our convictions?

This is why followers of Christ are admonished in 1 Corinthians 10:14 to “…flee from idolatry,” meaning anything that would draw them away from cherished beliefs and values.

What do you pursue? As we advance in the workplace, we can pursue numerous things, many of them being good things: promotions, more responsibility, greater contributions to the enterprise in which we are engaged. But we also can become consumed with the pursuit of power, position and possessions, things that appeal to pride. Do we find ourselves pursuing, as Paul urged the younger Timothy, “… righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11)?

What do you fight for? If our family members or friends were in jeopardy, we probably would fight for their safety and security. We often fight for the next sale or the next client, for “market share.” But as Paul urged, do we “Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12)? Do we resolve to hold true to our deepest beliefs, even if that could require a professional or personal cost?

What do you hold onto? In the business world there are many things to hold onto – reputations, status, income, even a corner office or prized parking place. But are we just as diligent to hold onto things that are not as tangible but, ultimately, of greater value?

As Paul wrote “Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called…” (1 Timothy 6:12). Even if we did that, what would it look like in practical, everyday ways?

Interesting things to think about, don’t you think?

There is nothing wrong in planning a strategy when one is engaged in a divorce case, lawyers and clients do it all the time within the bounds of advocacy. One strategy would be to undermine the credibility of the opponent by uncovering his or her lies or overreaching in an attempt to poison the waters of the mind of the judge against the other side.

In a recent Palm Beach County case, however the lawyers and clients all agreed on the issues before the court, and then presented their case to an experienced Palm Beach County Judge. The Parties, and perhaps their lawyers may be on the way to jail or disbarment as a result of their cooperation.

The Husband and wife were involved in a very lucrative business in which they both worked and shared the profits. Their stash of money grew exponentially in the usual way and in one very unusual way: they never paid any income tax on the profits of their business.

It is not unusual for lawyers to come upon such a situation.

The lawyers will explain to their clients that the case could not be tried before the court without jeopardizing their freedom once the IRS found out what was going on and further suggested that the Parties settle. The lawyers should,

in writing, each further suggest to their client that they should nevermore cheat on their taxes.

Lawyers and clients share confidentiality when discussing a client’s past crimes, but when a lawyer is told by a client about future crimes it is the lawyer’s duty is to turn in their clients.

However, in the Palm Beach County case both lawyers and their clients boldly put into evidence and argument that the major issue in the case was whether or not the clients were being fair and accurate in dividing the tax free cash; that is both lawyers put into evidence the crimes of their clients.

The judge properly chastised the sham case and criminal activities of the Parties and dismissed the claims and counter-claims denying the divorce on the grounds that the Parties marriage was not “irretrievably broken” as the couple had remained living together and were cooperating on the heretofore mentioned evidence.

Apparently no criminal charges or Bar grievances have been brought against the hapless couple and their lawyers. The Husband and Wife have taken an appeal to the Fourth District Court of Appeals on the Courts failure to allow them their divorce.

Lynn Baseball Runs Wild Versus Tigers

FAU Baseball Beats Notre Dame 13-3

After posting 16 runs in the nightcap on Saturday, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team kept the bats hot, beating Notre Dame 13-3. The FAU pitching staff struck out 15 Irish batters as FAU Head Coach John McCormack and the Owls won their season-opening series 2-1.

Junior Ricky Santiago led the Owls, going 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI. Senior Levi Meyer finished off his fantastic weekend with three RBI, batting 3-for-4 on the day with two walks. Freshman Stephen Kerr scored a pair of runs on three hits.

For the weekend, Meyer went 8-of-11 with seven RBI, three runs, two walks, a double and a triple.

Santiago scored a team-high six runs with three walks and three RBI. Junior newcomer Drew Jackson earned his first victory as an Owl, hurling nine strikeouts while allowing just three hits and one earned run in his five innings of work. Bo Logan and Kevin Alexander each pitched two innings in relief, recording three strikeouts apiece.

Notre Dame’s Scott Kerrigan suffered the loss, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in 2.1 innings.

The first inning saw both teams score runs and both teams leave the bases loaded. After the Irish posted two runs in the top of the frame, the Owls responded to take the lead.

Sophomore Brendon Sanger was hit by a pitch to open the inning and was driven in by a Santiago two-ouot

single to left. Meyer would load the bases with an infield single after a Notre Dame error that put Santiago on third. Freshman CJ Chatham then ripped a single through the right side to plate two runners and give the Owls a 3-2 advantage.

Notre Dame tied the game in the top of the third, but the Owls put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning. Santiago and freshman Sean Labsan singled to open the third and were driven in on a twoRBI single up the middle by Meyer to retake the lead. Following an Irish error and an infield single by Kerr, Sanger drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate Meyer. Endris and Kerr would score on an error and a wild pitch, respectively, to give the Owls an 8-3 lead.

Following to strikeouts to open the fifth, Santiago and redshirt freshman Esteban Puerta would piece together doubles to add an insurance run.

Robert Buckley, Tyler Rocklein and Santiago opened the seventh inning with back-to-back-to-back singles, with Santiago’s plating Buckley. Puerta and Meyer would each drive in a run to increase the FAU lead to nine runs.

Rocklein would hit an RBI single in the eighth to score Kerr after the freshman reached on an infield hit, ending the scoring at 13-3.

The FAU offense scored 31 runs in the three-game series while the pitching staff struck out 35 Notre Dame batters.

Lynn University’s baseball team completed the sweep of Stillman College with an 11-3 victory in the final game on Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Patrick picked up his second win of the season while Alex DeBellis lead the team offensively.

With the win Lynn improves to 8-2 on the season.

After three frames of scoreless baseball Lynn took the lead in the bottom of the second. Sal Giardina, Matt Ackerman and Mike Gonzalez all walked to load the bases before a Ben Schwanberg sacrifice fly to center field scored Giardina. The run began a five-inning stretch where the Fighting Knights scored at least one run.

Lynn took complete control of the game in the sixth inning where the team scored a game-high five runs. It began when Thomas Kain started off the inning with a walk;

DeBellis, the next batter, smacked a double down the right field line to advance Kain to third. Giardina was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs for Ackerman, who drew a walk and scored Kain.

DeBellis scored the following at bat off a sacrifice fly from Mike Gonzalez to left field. The final runs of the inning came off a three-run home run from Schwanberg.

On the mound Daniel Patrick pitched six complete innings striking out five batters while only allowing two earned runs. Jose Parra and Bobby Kruse combined to throw the final third of the game, each going one over the minimum, to end the game.

DeBellis had a team-high three hits while four other Fighting Knights had a multi-hit game.

Schwanberg had two hits with four runs batted in in the win.

Strikers re-sign Stefan Antonijevic and Justin Chavez The Fort Lauderdale Strikers announced last week that defenders Stefan Antonijevic and Justin Chavez have re-signed with the club for the 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season. As per club policy, the terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“One of our off-season goals was to ensure that the core group of players that led our team last year would play for us again in 2014,” said Strikers Managing Director Tim Robbie. “Antonijevic and Chavez both showed tremendous promise last year. We expect both players to make significant contributions to our team going forward.”

Both Antonijevic, 25, and Chavez, 23, signed their first professional contracts with the Strikers ahead of the 2013 campaign. The pair made their full debuts in the center of defense in a 1-0 win in Edmonton on May 26th, earning both a place on the NASL Team of the Week.

Antonijevic became a regular starter for head coach Günter Kronsteiner in the Fall season, starting all but two matches. The six-foot-six center back formed a formidable partnership with Rafael

Alves, dubbed by some fans as the “Two Towers.” The partnership looks to remain intact as Alves will also be returning to the Strikers for the upcoming season.

Strikers supporters group Flight 19 honored Antonijevic at the end of the season, awarding the rookie defender the inaugural Flight 19 Golden Scarf as their 2013 Player of the Year.

Chavez signed with the Strikers after a successful collegiate career at the University of Tulsa. He was a starting center back for the Golden Hurricane during his four year stint at the university, making 77 appearances and tallying five goals and four assists.

Capable of playing in the center of defense or as a central midfielder, Chavez made 5 starts in 13 appearances for the Strikers in 2013.

Antonijevic and Chavez are the 13th and 14th players from the 2013 roster to re-sign for the upcoming year. The Strikers have also signed German Bundesliga veteran goalkeeper Oka Nikolov and Miami native Shawn Chin.

Nationally Ranked Bobcats Fall In PKs The Boca Raton High School Bobcats were defeated in the Class 5A State Championship game on Saturday to Miami’s Columbus Explorers in a penalty kick shootout after the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

After an improbable run to the State Final Four, the Bobcats escaped the upset on Friday night after giving up a 2-0 lead with 16 minutes left to play to let East Lake tie up the semi-final match, after captain Tomer Bitton received his second yellow of the game.

“A lot of teams being down 2-0 with seven minutes to play would have quit and they didn’t,” Boca Raton coach Marcelo Castillo said.

“That’s a credit to that coaching staff and those players.”

Neither team had a good chance in the final six minutes of regulation, forcing two 10-minute overtime periods, followed by penalty kicks.

East Lake goalkeeper Sean Caulfield started PKs by saving a shot from Sebastien Desir. East Lake’s Tanner Young then hit the right post to keep it tied.

The next two for each team scored, and Boca Raton’s Sebastian Elney scored to make it 3-2.

East Lake’s Josh Page, the team’s leading scorer with 30 goals, kicked a slow roller to the right that was saved by Acevedo. When Aaron Kleinart made his shot for the Bobcats, the game was over.

Then on Saturday night, after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Columbus Explorers took the No. 1-ranked and No. 8 nationally ranked Boca Raton to a penalty-kick shootout and stunned them with the 1-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks) victory.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers Close To Stadium Deal

By Pedro Heizer In a week filled with MLS Miami news, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers are on the verge of making a major splash of their own.

According to multiple courses, an internal memo went out to all Striker employees this week explaining that the organization is “very close” to a stadium deal.

The Strikers, who currently play at Lockhart Stadium, have been linked to many rumors in the past year in regards to ownership, and stadiums.

In December of 2012, Tim Robbie was named managing director of team personnel and stadium development, and since that day they have been working with the City of Fort Lauderdale about possible renovations to historic Lockhart. However, he hasn’t been shy in admitting that if renovations to Lockhart can’t happen, they will build a Soccer Specific Stadium of their own.

There has been two possible scenarios for the Strikers to get their new soccer stadium. One, is the construction of the $110

million Schlitterbahn Waterpark Fort Lauderdale that has been ready to go for three years at the former spring-training home of the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles next to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

During the construction, Lockhart Stadium would remain and be enhanced, with some of the water rides going underneath its bleachers and possibly through the stadium itself. Which would be rather interesting.

The other possibility is moving out of Lockhart altogether.

There has been rumors of a possible move to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. Not only would there be a new stadium, but according to sources, Frank Stronach would end up purchasing the club from Traffic Sports.

All this excitement in the South Florida sports market is good for the sport. It doesn’t matter if you are a supporter of the MLS team, the Strikers, or both. Soccer is soccer and if something good happens to one team, it’s good for the entire community.
