“We are thrilled to have Sarah come back to assist with so many of the projects that she herself participated in while she was a student at Eagles Landing,” principal Cynthia Chiapetta said. “It is particularly impressive since she carries such a rigorous class load at FAU high school.” She designed a program called Kids in Need, which addresses multiple needs within the school and the community that focuses on student and child centered needs. The group started at the beginning of the school year by collecting back packs and supplies. KIN ran a toy drive during the holidays and collected more than 650 toys for Toys for Tots, school official said. They also ran a book drive during Literacy Month and collected more than 200 books for a local elementary school. Sarah also tutors students and worked on the “Green” Committee at the school and in the school’s outdoor learning center. She is a student representative on the School Advisory Council and a student affairs liaison of the Parent Teacher Student Association. Sarah was awarded the 2012/13 Palm Beach County PTA Student Ambassador award. “Sarah is truly an inspiration and role model to our middle schoolers,” Chiapetta said.

Billy attends Florida Atlantic University, taking his core classes leading toward a major in Law, with plans to pursue his masters in intelligence studies. His awards include: Sea Scout Quartermaster, Venturing Gold, and William T. Hornaday Silver and Bronze. His involvement in school has placed him positions of leadership in both sports and in academics. Arriving in the nation’s capital on Feb. 22, Billy and the other Boy Scouts of America delegates are scheduled for visits throughout the week with U.S. Cabinet, House, and Senate leadership, as well as the

White House, CIA, Pentagon, and Supreme Court. The delegation will deliver this year’s report to Speaker of the House John Boehner. Locally, the West Central Florida Council has contributed to the national report that will be shared through the delivery of a quality Scouting experience in Seminole and surrounding areas serving more than 1,575 local youth members in 2013. Specifically, West Central Florida Council had 87 new Eagle Scouts last year who contributed to more than 17,100 hours of service to the community through their projects; a part of 31,877 total hours contributed by the Council’s members during the year. Additionally, 4,847 different merit badges were earned last year by members. The West Central Florida Council’s summer camp program has also experienced an increase in attendance by 28 percent in 2013 which led to an additional week of camp. During 2013, Scouts across America gave more than 17 million hours of service to their communities at a value of more than $377 million (based on a national volunteer-hour value of $22.14). In 2013, more than 56,000 young men earned the Eagle Scout Award. In addition to the 21 life skills merit badges required to earn the Eagle Scout rank, each Scout must complete an extensive service project that he plans, organizes, leads, and manages before his 18th birthday. In 2013, Eagle Scout projects provided more than $206 million in service to communities across the nation. February 28, through March 06, 2014

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Among America’s Best Hospitals For Fourth Year In A Row

A report released today by Healthgrades® named Boca Raton Regional Hospital one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2014, which puts the Hospital in the top one percent of hospitals nationwide. This makes the fourth year in a row the Hospital has earned this prestigious accolade. In order to earn a place on the list of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, a facility had to have mortality and complication rates low enough to place them in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for the last seven consecutive years. “We are extremely proud of this honor and distinction,” said Jerry Fedele, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boca Regional. “We have a strong and longstanding commitment to delivering outstanding clinical care and the Healthgrades rating is validation of just that.” According to the report, if, between 2010 and 2012, all U.S. hospitals had performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals, then nearly 156,079 deaths could have been prevented. In other words, there was a 23.29 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate for the hospitals among the Healthgrades’ America’s 50 BestTM Hospitals

when compared to all other hospitals in the nation (across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome). The organization considered nearly 4,500 hospitals, ranging in size from 100 beds to more than 500. The organization used seven years of Medicare data and looked at the 27 most common diagnoses and procedures in the Medicare population to do their analysis. “Today, hospitals are working harder than ever to achieve quality care, which makes this distinction even more significant,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “Consumers can have confidence that a hospital receiving the America’s 50 BestTM designation has demonstrated a steadfast, organizational commitment to quality.” Boca Regional has also been named as a Healthgrades 2014 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for the tenth year in a row- only 24 of the nations’s 4,500 hospitals have earned such a consecutive distinction. This designation places Boca Raton Regional Hospital among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance.

Largest Competition in the World Attracts South Florida Gymnasts

By CRA News Service Area gymnasts are heading to St. Petersburg this weekend for the 26th Annual 2014 Florida’s Beach Gasparilla Classic. Billed as one of the largest gymnastics competitions in the United States and possibly the world, the event is hosted by Lightning City Gymnastics and the St. Petersburg/ Clearwater Sports Commission. Gymnasts throughout Florida and the world compete for three days (Feb.28 –March 2). “We are really excited to compete,” says Julie Willmott, owner of Kids Choice Sports, Dance & Fitness, which operates Rising Stars Gymnastics of Boca Raton. Rising Stars Gymnastics will send 25 gymnasts. “I love this competition because our athletes get a little taste of what it feels like to compete against gymnasts from other countries.” When Willmott’s gymnasts return, they’ll join their teammates Monday night as the Pre-Game show for the Harlem Globetrotters at Florida Atlantic University. The Gasparilla Classic, attracting more than 3,000 gymnasts (130 teams), takes place at Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. The arena is large enough for four women’s meets and one men’s meet to all be going on simultaneously. Twenty two states and 12 countries will be represented. About 10 of those teams will be from South Florida.

www.bocaratontribune.com

Rising Stars Gymnastics, Twister Gymnastics of Boca Raton and American Twisters (Coconut Creek) are three area gyms heading to the invitational. “It does give the athlete an opportunity to compete against people from all over the world,” says Kevin Griffin, one of the classic’s meet directors. “We’ve had kids from as far as Russia to compete in past years.” Many of the international teams this year are coming from South America and the Caribbean. Griffin says it takes about a year to coordinate the classic. Regina Stabile of Boca Raton has two girls competing this weekend: Adrianna, 12 and Daniella, 9. “I think they are really looking forward to having a lot of fun and competing with other girls from outside the area,” says Stabile, a senior analyst for a Fortune 100 Company. Her girls are members of the Rising Stars team. “I’m also looking forward to seeing so many other teams compete.” Teammate Stephanie Holsten, 11, a student at Boca Raton’s Calusa Elementary, says she’s competed at least three times at Gasparilla. She likes it because it is such a big competition. “You get to talk to kids from so many other teams,” she says. “We’ve been practicing really hard because the coaches want us to do well.” February 28, through March 06, 2014

Consider the Benefits of Mental Health First Aid My cell phone lit up with the text: “my mama in the hospital. She is sick.” The following day, I received another, “She has cancer.” But the message that grabbed my attention was the one that followed about two weeks later: “She dead. I don’t know what I am going to do. I want to kill myself.” I called the student, one of the many whom I mentor, and I could tell she was distressed. I managed to console her until I arrived at the hospital shortly after. During the conversation on the way to the hospital, I remembered an article I read less than a month earlier on Mental Health First Aid training: stay calm, assess for risk of suicide and listen nonjudgmentally. I asked questions that allowed her to explain what she was thinking and feeling, and why she was considering taking her life. I knew not to argue with her as I understood I had to focus on getting as much information as possible about her emotional state, what she might do in the parking lot. I’d also like to think that I was able to prevent her from hurting herself whether she intended to do so or not. As I reflected on that saga, I couldn’t help but think about the hundreds of other students or young people across this country who feel the same way but have no one to intervene and often result in then carrying out their wishes or desires. Think Columbine, Newtown, Conn.; Aurora, Colo. And the too many others on a grim list of places where a sense of security has been snatched away by gun violence. I recently learned that the Palm Beach County Action Alliance

for Mental Health is considering sending it’s affiliate members through a Mental Health First Aid training soon. This unique training would help teachers and others identify someone with the signs and symptoms of mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis and steer them to resources. In an average lifetime, people are very likely to come across someone in an emotional crisis. What a brilliant idea! The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare brought the training to the U.S. from Australia in 2008. It also addresses the risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance-use disorders. It is my hope that the program would be expanded to increase the number of certified Mental Health First Aid trainers, with more key personnel in places such as schools, child serving agencies and our state college taking this important course. Our awareness of mental health needs to become as basic and critical as CPR. Let’s face it, when a loved one has cancer or another debilitating illness, family members rally around. They take turns cooking, cleaning, driving the injured loved one to doctor’s appointments, give pep talks, and much more. But we cannot say the same for when someone is struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental conditions. More often, family members are not sure what to do, which can be heartbreaking when what they want more than anything is to help their loved one. When that happens, people with mental illness are left feeling that much more alone and at risk to do something destructive to

themselves, and sometimes to someone else. Mental illnesses are far more common than people think. More than one in five adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. And few actually seek professional help. Families are often our first responders and can be a person’s primary support network, whether they are ill with a medical or mental illness. A recent study found that people trained in Mental Health First Aid had greater confidence in helping others, a greater likelihood of advising people

www.bocaratontribune.com

to seek professional help, and decreased stigmatizing attitudes among those who took the training. What would you do if a family member was depressed? Or self-destructive or suicidal? Or experiencing hallucinations? Every day hundreds of people are learning what to do, how to take action, by taking Mental Health First Aid training in the communities across the country that are now offering it. Let’s continue pushing to make Palm Beach County a model public health community.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

The Danger of Fear-Based Decisions Fear, as we all know, can be a strong influence in shaping our behavior. But have you ever considered the effect fear can have on the choices we make in the workplace? A Barna Group study revealed 17 percent of people surveyed say that they make many of their ethical decisions out of fear. They arrive at decisions not out of strong convictions about what is right and proper, but rather out of a desire to avoid undesirable consequences of choosing differently. This was true in my own experience not long after my own business career was getting started. Early on as a CPA, because of a past mistake I had made, I was afraid of losing my job. So when a boss told me to do something illegal for a client, my

fear surfaced. Although I knew what I was being asked to do was wrong, I conceded and did as I was told to avoid being fired. I never forgot that episode and although I never had to face disciplinary measures, it caused me to rethink how I made my choices, both at work and in my personal life. Fear, I decided, should never be a justifying factor for any breach of proper ethical conduct. Of course, fear does not always lead to illegal or unethical behavior. We make investment decisions based on fear, believing our financial well-being is at stake. When confronting a formidable competitor in the quest to attract an important customer, we might make promises we know cannot be met. We put in extraordinary hours at work, jeopardizing our

health and sacrificing priority time with our families because we fear not being able to meet the expectations of our supervisors. Fear may tempt us to do things we know are wrong, but we do not have to yield to that temptation. We can set boundaries, determining in advance those areas where we will not compromise our convictions and values. But even more important, we need to keep in mind the one we should allow to have the ultimate say in the things we do or decide not to do. In the Bible’s Old Testament, Deuteronomy 10:12 teaches, “What does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

The Scriptures talk much about the fear of God – not a fear that He in anger will strike us with a bolt of lightning, but a deep sense of reverence and awe, recognizing He has placed us where we are to honor and represent Him, and that He has entrusted the talents and skills we have for His purposes. The demands of our human superiors should never supersede those of the God we worship we serve. Many experiences in the business and professional world have taught me an important truth: The best ethical decisions come from fearing and loving God more than fearing any boss, no matter how much power and influence he or she has in our organization. God’s ways are always the best ways.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

The Urge to Contradict Have you ever witnessed persons who never accept what another is saying to them or to someone else who is part of the same conversation? It seems they have to contradict certain details, most of which add nothing to the accuracy to what is being conveyed. Whatever is stated about any issue, or reported from personal observation, whether seen on TV, or heard on the radio, some persons appear to have the incurable itch to challenge and contradict. These people want to be “precise” (so they tell us), but on matters which are totally

inconsequential to what is being shared. If one alludes to a day, week, or month, or whether the event being described occurred in the morning, afternoon, or evening, or if any other insignificant detail is offered, which that person disagrees with, the urge to contradict is immediately heard! When such things occur in my presence, or even when I am the one being challenged, the question that immediately comes to my mind is: What motivates one to be always contrary and persistently contradictory, sometimes even combative?

The only answers I’ve been able to find to such situations only point to one’s insecurity, arrogance, excessive competitiveness, or even some form of mental instability. Most of all, it should point to a conversation not worth maintaining! People are entitled to their personal opinions without having to interrupt a dialogue with another, and argue about unimportant issues which in no way alter the veracity of what is being communicated. The ultimate truthfulness of what is being related is absolute, and none of those insignificant details being

questioned can add or detract anything from the conversation. Too much extra detail seldom adds anything of significance to any issue being discussed. Throughout my life I’ve been one to stand for truth, convictions, and accuracy. Nevertheless, it’s not necessary to be a stickler to insignificant points, and unnecessary matters that won’t add any substance to a correct understanding of a narrative. The urge to contradict draws more negative attention to the challenger than subtracts any significance from the words of the one being challenged!

The Boca Raton Tribune COMMUNITY NEWS East/West Boca Raton, FL

Does DESIGN MATTER?

Douglas A. Mummaw

Who wants to live downtown?

By Douglas A. Mummaw Why are residential units important in a vibrant downtown? My past Design Matters articles focus on the architectural or urban planning aspects of why Design Matters in our Downtown. This article is a little more broad in the architectural context, but still very congruent to the importance of design AND the recent community discussions regarding our downtown development. People attract other people. We thrive on the energy of others. Our fondest memories usually involve a unique experience at a special event or gathering of people. Concerts, Birthday parties, Holiday events, etc. are all “moments” we treasure. What about daily activities? Dining, shopping, walking our dog, exercising? Aren’t they all more enjoyable when experienced with others? What is Downtown Living and why is there such a resistance lately to it? Statistics demonstrate that over

75,000 non-residents enter our city every day to work. Then they leave to return to their homes elsewhere. Do they come back to shop, dine or attend one of our downtown venues like IPIC, The Amphitheater, Art Museum, etc.? Most do not. Every one of us are creatures of habits. We shop at the same grocery store, pick up our dry cleaning, go out to eat at the same restaurants, walk our dogs, etc., within a personal “sphere zone” that is a short distance from our dwellings. We may work somewhere else, but our personal time, approximately two-thirds of our daily lives, is spent where we live. To have a successful downtown, we need people living in it. We need their “sphere zones” directly embedded into it so that their routines can become the nucleus or center of special pedestrian realms(places). Living in a downtown is different. It is supposed to be. You park in the sky, live in the sky, and may even work in the sky, but seek out the ground for the “experience” and daily activities with others. Everyone has their own personal “scale meter.” Our personal perceptions are instinctive but they can also be learned. Some people feel crowded in a grocery line. Others feel great in an amphitheater or professional sporting event. Each feeling is individual and each are appropriate. Architectural scale is the same. Buildings can be perceived as too big, too boring, do not relate to context, etc. We are all architectural critics:) So what scale is appropriate in a downtown? There are proven case studies that specifically address this. We have made significant progress with our own architectural codes. I will discuss it further in a later article. For now, I am just

referring to the residential scale of a downtown. We must have residential scale so that all the other important elements like retail stores, restaurants, daily services, entertainment venues, cultural, civic venues and passive spaces like parks can all be intertwined together successfully. Otherwise, we have a static, none attractive zone in the middle of our city. I believe, we can all agree that is not desirable. Long time residents can remember that our downtown was blighted and getting worse. Today, we have remarkable seeds of growth. We have Mizner Park, the irrefutable gold standard in urban planning. We have parks, beautiful beaches within walking distance. We have the most unique movie experience in South Florida, We have amphitheaters, museums, shopping and world class restaurants......I can write an entire article on our amenities. Design Matters. Not just in how we make something look. Design Matters in tactical urban planning strategies. It matters in creating the right “mix of uses” that will create synergy for new experiences. It matters to our skyline and the beauty of our Boca Raton Brand. It matters in creating vertical neighborhoods, where new friendships are forged. These elements will meet the ground with excitement, demands for services and the creation of special spaces. Our “Downtown” has not realized its potential. To do so,

we need more people living here, working here and spending their personal time and money here. This will strengthen our positive elements and ignite the growth opportunities for new exciting ones. We need downtown dwellers to start the chain reaction. The sky cranes are bringing them. The transformation has begun. Residential Development in our downtown is critically important to the growth of our city. New vertical communities of The Mark, Tower 155, The Camden and the new Hyatt Place Hotel and others will enhance our downtown and already successful, Royal Palm Place and 200 East Developments. It will seem like it happened over night. Downtown Boca Raton will continue towards its destined potential and the experiences of our downtown will create new attractors and memories we will be proud of..... Friends, I look forward to our ongoing discussions on Why DESIGN MATTERS in our downtown.

The Best Kept Secret Area in Boca Raton By Joshua Carlson In our everyday routines we get accustomed to living in Sunny South Florida and we circulate our plans and down time mostly thinking of Boca Raton as a Beach paradise. We meet our friends at the beach, and surf or maybe even snorkel off the reefs. Yet many of us find ourselves craving for a little bit of variety. We love the sand and ocean and appreciate how lucky we are to live in such a warm weather climate with mostly blues skies. However, some greenery,

or expansive land with trees, and sounds of nature seem amazing too. Life these days can turn into a blur of rushing from place to place. We get into a whirlwind of running around in our hectic worlds, and we don’t take enough time to stop, breath and enjoy our surroundings. For many of us, the days of being able to have time to hop in the car and take a long weekend road trip so we can unwind in the relaxing ambiance of the mountains and greenery seem long gone!

Well, did you know Boca Raton can give us the best of both worlds? Yes…Boca Raton has a hidden gem, an unknown secret. We have areas of Boca Raton that practically transplant us into the “Country”. Unless you have explored or grown up down here, you will not know much about these residential areas. There are certain communities in Boca Raton that will take you, in a short twenty minute drive, from having lunch or shopping in busy Mizner Park to an environment of beautiful mature trees and homes

situated on more than an acre. Are you eager to see where these homes are? Do you think the prices of the homes will be high? Not necessarily! Come and take a look at one of the great unknown areas of Boca Raton that will take you out of the “norm” and place you in a home with more than an acre of land. These homes are perfect for entertaining or for the kids to run around having fun in. To find out about where the Best Kept Secret area in Boca Raton is call Josh at 561-929-8874. Driver vs. Pedestrian Road Rage Sends 1 to Jail, I to Hospital By Jason Schwartz A Boca Raton man was arrested and charged after he shoved a 70-year-old man to the ground for slapped his sports utility vehicle with his hand and yelled at him because he almost struck him while crossing the street, police said. Police charged John McNally, 43, with assault on an elderly person. He was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on $3,000 bail. The road rage happened Sunday around 2:30 p.m. when McNally was driving his Lexus SUV near Mizner Park and failed to “respect” a stop sign and almost struck Leonard Shubitz, according to a police arrest report. Shubitz, 70, then screamed “You almost hit me,” at McNally, the report stated. He told officers he

touched the car to catch his balance which McNally didn’t take lightly. He got out of his SUV, pushed Shubitz down in the street, then drove off, police said. A witness snapped a photo of McNally’s license plate and gave it to police. McNally told officers he pushed Shubitz because he hit the side of the car in which his 4-year-old daughter was seated. He said he regretted pushing him in front of his daughter. Shubitz’s wife told police that McNally, a tall man, pushed her husband hard with two hands and screamed, “Don’t touch my car!” Shubitz was injured when he hit the ground and was taken to Boca Raton Regional Hospital. He received abrasions and bruises to his head, shoulders, neck and tailbone, police said.

“Full Monty” Fully Enjoyable at Wick Theatre

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, as the old says goes. The phenomenon of male stripteasing coincided with the rise of women’s liberation. Why should men have a monopoly on ogling the opposite sex? And so began “Ladies Night Out.” Chippendale’s, the first and best-

known of the male revues formed in 1979, was comprised mostly of professional dancers in prime physical condition. The main joke of “The Fully Monty,” which began as a 1997 British film comedy set in the former steel town center of Sheffield, England, was that an ordinary bunch of blokes would go circumspect Chippendale’s one better by going the “full monty,” or completely naked. “The Full Monty’ became a stage musical in 2000, with book by Terrence McNally and music and lyrics by David Yazbek. A locallysourced version of the show is now in residence at the Wick Theatre, 7901 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, through March 23. If anything the stage version is an improvement over the movie. The book, by much-honored fourtime Tony Award-winner Terrence McNally, is more compact and moving. The music, by David Yazbek (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”) amplifies and improves upon the movie soundtrack. The stage version has been Americanized and moved to another

faded industrial town, Buffalo, New York. Michael Orozco plays the designated hunk, professional stripper Buddy “Keno” Walsh. It is Orozco who gets the ladies going during the overture, strutting his stuff. The main character is Jerry Lukowski, an out-of-work steel mill worker played by Preston Ellis. Jerry is a rugged Everyman kind of guy driven to desperation by his financial situation. The rest of the male cast is various types. Reggie Whitehead is the smooth black dude. JP Sarro is the reluctant fatty. Barry Tarallo is the older guy with a beautiful voice.

“The Full Monty” has a large cast, half of whom are female. It’s fun watching the women playing audience members egging on the guys to take it off. In the final analysis there is nothing obscene or even shocking about “The Fully Monty.” There is a reason it is called strip “tease.” If it’s a fun evening you seek with a wink and a nod. Wick Theatre’s “Full Monty” fills the bill. Tickets are $58 general admission or $52 group. Call 561-995-2333 or go to www.thewick.org.

Tony’s Tips For Success

Entertainment Skip Sheffield A “Son of God” for the Faithful

The Bible and specifically the New Testament story of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ have been perennial subjects of plays, books, music and movies. The first movie on the life of Jesus Christ was the Cecil B. DeMille epic “King of Kings” in 1927. The latest re-telling of “The greatest story ever told” is “Son of God,” distributed by 20th Century Fox. “Son of God” is a pared down, less than two-hour version of the 10-hour History Channel miniseries “The Bible.” Directed and co-written by Christopher Spencer, “The Bible” proved the History Channel’s most successful series ever. The cast is largely unknown by American audiences. It is lead by Portuguese actor-model Diogo Morgado. Like all of the more than a dozen cinematic Jesuses, Morgado is a really handsome man. However, Morgado the actor is no match for some previous film Jesuses, including Jim Caviezel in Mel Gibson’s controversial “The Passion of the Christ” and

February 28, through March 06, 2014

charismatic Ted Neeley in the rock musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1973. “Son of God” is considered by some an antidote to the perceived anti-Semitic “Passion of the Christ,” released ten years ago. “Song of God” even has an endorsement by Anti-Defamation League leader Abraham Foxman. The bad news is that “Son of God” does not live up to the passion of its story. The acting is amateurish; the CG special effects obvious and the biblical Jerusalem sets fake-looking. I am well versed enough in The Bible that I knew what dialogue was coming next, starting with the opening excerpt from the Book of Genesis “In the beginning was The Word and The Word became flesh.” “Son of God” is being marketing to church-going faithful, which makes a lot of sense. There’s a lot of money in them there megachurches. I just wonder what the Jesus who overturned the tables of the money-changers in the temple would think? Rating:  stars

Tony Hall

I Will! We say it before every class. Have you ever wondered why? “I Will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that will reduce my mental growth or my physical health! I Will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and in others! I Will use common sense, before self-defense and never be abusive or offensive” It is Part 3 of our confidence series. It is called positive affirmation, or self-talk. Every successful person has hit dramatic lows before rising to the top. During those low points an almost necessary “Positive” selftalk is required! It creates an instant confidence in our mind that helps us achieve greatness. Walt Disney was fired for having lack of imagination. Can you imagine if he walked out and said to himself, “ They are right, I am just not creative enough” We would have no Disney World! A teacher even once told Thomas Edison he was “Too Stupid to learn anything!” It is not what other people tell you! It is what you tell yourself ! I am a Champion! I will succeed! No one can stop Me! Everything that is great comes within you. In the end it all comes down to what your belief is. I read something last week that said, No person, place or thing, can change the way you feel. Before you start to disagree, let’s analyze this. When it is raining some people say, “ oh, what an ugly day I feel yucky” while someone else say’s “Oh how peaceful and tranquil, the rain makes me feel happy and calm.”

www.bocaratontribune.com

The truth is the rain had nothing to do with how they feel, it was what they told themselves to feel because of the rain. Same thing happens when you face adversity, some give up or get discouraged, some rise to the challenge. It all starts with the selftalk. Did you tell yourself “I Quit”, or did you tell yourself “We are Just Getting Started, Let’s Go!” ----Self Defense Basics---In all the different styles of selfdefense training I have done there have been many consistencies in moves. While each style has its unique application and purpose there are commonalities. 1. Stance. Get a solid base and stance. Your posture will determine your outcome. If you are off balance or in a vulnerable position they will have the advantage. 2. Identify your personal weapons. What tools do you have Fist? Headbutt? Knee Strikes? Voice to call for help? Whatever it is, they have not taken it all away! 3. Locate the vulnerable locations! Eyes, throat, Groin, Shins, Torso, Fingers, etc… 4. Give 100% If you are being attacked, You must fight to survive! If you strike back, you must deliver force with 100% power. Do not hold anything back. 5. Three elements! Break out! (get them to release their grip or hold) Take out! ( if the treat is real incapacitate them so they do not attack again) Get Out! ( Run to safety, you should be able to run 1 mile without stopping, train at least 30 minutes of cardio 3 times weekly)

Student Housing Project Starts Construction In Boca Raton With Ground Breaking Event By: Robert Baez BOCA RATON – Wednesday, February 26th, marked the official groundbreaking for an upcoming student residential complex that is planned to debut in 2015. University Park is located at 135 NW 20th Street and will be a 731-bed facility. Its convenient location will attract students from Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University, and Palm Beach State College. The groundbreaking event attracted guests such as Mayor Susan Whelchel, FAU Director of Athletics Patrick Chun, and FAU Head Football Coach Charlie Partridge, to show their support for the advancement of the project. A major focus of speeches given was the pressed issue of having students in the residential neighborhoods. “I do not think they would have wanted me in the neighborhood when I was a student,” says Mayor Whelchel. This project is seen as stimulation to the development of 20th Street and the expectations are that as this project comes to a completion, others will want to bring businesses to the area. The development of 20th Street can bring a boost to the local economy, entice students by having college-friendly prices, and also have students begin creating a community that they are proud to call home. “This particular property is the anchor of renovating 20th Street. It is time for developers to re-develop,” continued Mayor Whelchel. This success will tie FAU to 20th Street and it will no longer be known as a side street, but an emergent area.

The Financial Home Purchase Puzzle Purchasing a home can become costly, so it’s crucial to know what the costs are before plunging in head first and not being aware of the complete picture. There are 4 pieces to this financial puzzle. 1) First Piece of the Puzzle – When you find a home that you feel is the right fit for you; your Realtor will suggest to make an offer on the property, by writing a Sales Contract, extending your terms and details of how you are going to pay for the purchase of the property and many other factors that weigh into the successful negotiation between the two parties (Seller & Buyer). One of the most important factors that will be weighed by the Seller and Sellers Realtor, is how much of a Deposit are you are placing

into Escrow (Earnest Money). This deposit shows how serious and ready you are to commit to this deal. Talk with your Realtor on what they suggest for your deposit. 2) Second Piece of the Puzzle – Make sure that you can afford your Monthly Mortgage Payment, the Principal & Interest Payment, Insurance and Taxes, and HOA or Condo Association fee (if applicable). Talk with your Mortgage Broker as to your comfort levels. It’s one thing to qualify and be “approved” for a home, and another to be feeling good with the payment you have to make per month for the home. How much can you afford? That’s a question to be answered by the Mortgage Broker; however, there is a standard rule of thumb in the industry, which

says you can afford two and one-half times your annual gross income. Your annual gross income is the amount you make before taxes are deducted. This number can include your spouse or other co-borrowers income. For example, if you and a co-borrower have a combined annual gross income of $50,000 you could afford to pay up to $125,000 for a home ($50,000 times 2.5 = $125,000). 3) Third Piece of the Puzzle – Closing Costs and Costs related to the Purchase of your Home. Please check with your Mortgage Broker and Title Company/Real Estate Attorney to make sure you are prepared for the exact amount you will need to take to the table on the closing day. Remember, there are fees such as Title Insurance,

Documentary Stamp Tax on the deed and on the mortgage, intangible tax on the note, Lender fees, recording fees, appraisal, and survey etc. 4) Fourth Piece of the Puzzle – New Homeowners tend to forget the maintenance costs that could be incurred in the upcoming months or years with their home, so it’s important to have a “house fund” for repairs, or sudden costs that may make come up. These are things such as pool or yard maintenance, airconditioning repairs/maintenance, etc. As the pieces of the puzzle fall in place, you will find that you are prepared and organized for this new adventure………Good Luck!

Mizner Grande Realty Joins the Billion Dollar Club If you are still wondering if the South Florida real estate market has recovered, stop wondering because of the success of Boca Raton real estate firms like Mizner Grande Realty. This month the boutique real estate company announced that they surpassed the $1.3 billion mark in sales in a little over a decade. That includes surviving a severe recession that crippled the South Florida real estate market. “To easily surpass a billion dollars in sales is unbelievable. I remember starting this firm in 2001 and working my tail off to simply get some listings and agents. Now we have over 55 agents and breaking sales records. It’s a testament to hard work,” said Ari Albinder, Owner and Broker of Mizner Grande Realty. In 2013, Mizner Grande Realty broke its own record and reached $214 million in sales. They predict that they will surpass the $225 million dollar mark in sales in 2014. They focus on selling luxury

residences and condominiums in the Boca Raton, Highland Beach, Delray Beach, Palm Beach, Hillsboro Mile, Manalapan, Ocean Ridge, Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point and south to Miami. “The outlook for 2014 is awesome. The stock market is breaking records. The South Florida weather is pristine and the weather up north is hideous. Everyone who visits here wants to move here. Low interest rates make it an incredible time to buy. It’s the perfect time to buy and sell a home and that’s why we are getting the best listings,” added Albinder. Albinder credits their Local, Global and International marketing approach for getting deals done and generating many, many referrals. Their high-powered advertising and direct mail programs have attracted many buyers to Boca Raton and its negotiating ability and knowledge of the inventory has allowed them to assist buyers getting the best deal.

WHOSE JOB IS MOST IMPORTANT? If someone asked you whose job is most important where you work, what would you say? Would it be the CEO, chairman, or owner of the company? When evaluating jobs in terms of importance, we typically look at position on the corporate ladder, such as the top executive. Other factors can include compensation and productivity level. If a person is paid a lot, he or she must be worth it, right? And the top salesperson in any business would rank high. Without someone generating sales to keep business coming in and products or services going out, the company would eventually have to close its doors. But there is another way of assessing one’s importance in the workplace. I was reminded of this during a conversation with a manager at a company I’ve been working with over the last several months. The plant, which manufactures products outsourced by Fortune 500 companies, depends upon the consistent, quality work of many key people at various steps in the manufacturing process. For instance, the procurement department must ensure that materials are available when needed to make a specific product. If the materials are not on hand, the production line cannot run. So people in procurement are very important. The manufacturing department also ranks high in importance – how can you sell a product you have not made? The maintenance department is poised to make critical repairs to machinery when necessary, so its work is of high importance as well. Then there is the accounting department, which sends invoices, collects payments and pays suppliers. People in the payroll and human resources departments play crucial roles in terms of ensuring

employees are paid promptly and receive benefits to which they are entitled, hiring new staff members when needed, and handling the process when employees retire or must be terminated. So at that company – as with all organizations where we work – the most important job, or most important person, varies according to what must be done at the moment. Even the custodial staff can be considered most important when it comes to maintaining hygienic and well-supplied restrooms, disposing of trash and keeping floors vacuumed and cleaned. This helps us to realize two important principles: Do not overestimate or underestimate your own importance. Even if you rank near the top of your company’s organizational chart, your effectiveness and productivity are integrally related to the work performed by others. And if you hold a lower-level role in your organization, you are still important. Even the best, most experienced speaker must rely on someone else to make sure the microphone is ready and the sound system is functioning properly. “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you” (Romans 12:3). Do not underestimate the importance of others. There is a temptation to disregard individuals of lower standing within a company, but every job is crucial to its success. Each person should be appreciated for what they do and their role in the overall corporate effort. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility, consider others better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

Game Over Clearly it is a lot easier to get married in the United States than it is to end a marriage. Marriages can be ended with a divorce or annulment. Annulments are granted far less often than divorces as grounds are usually limited to the failure to consummate the marriage, IE. fail to have sex with the partner after the wedding ceremony. It has come to my attention that couples usually have sex almost immediately after they marry. Having sex before the marriage does not consummate the marriage. In order to get divorced or have a marriage annulled papers must be filed and served. A final hearing or trial must be held and a judge must enter a final judgment of divorce or “dissolution of marriage” as it is called in Florida, or annulment. If one never begins a divorce proceeding or annulment or fails to complete the process they remain married. If they remain married they cannot legally marry another. If one attempts to marry another without having had their previous marriage ended that attempt is void. Occasionally we run across cases which involve a “serial” husband or wife who continues to marry but

forgets to get divorced or have their prior marriage successfully annulled. When such a sicko is found out, and proof determined there can be various results. The person duped by the other, if the impecunious spouse (the one with far less income and assets) can receive equitable alimony if they had no knowledge that their mate had never completed their last divorce or annulment. The type or types of alimony granted are the same as in a typical divorce. The failure to obtain a divorce or annulment before re-marrying makes the current marriage void, and this “forgetful” party can take no benefits as the result. While it is sometimes hard to put humpty dumpty together again the person at fault can gain no alimony and no distribution of property, while having to pay their own debts. In this day and age of electronic files and search engines the serial marriage person is more easily found out than in the past. A social security number and a computer can often lead to the proof required. There may also be criminal ramifications as bigamy is a felony in all states in our union.

Owls Lose Nailbiter To North Texas, Fall 78-76 Despite a career high 27 points from Justin Raffington, the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team lost to North Texas 78-76 on Saturday night. The Owls (10-18, 5-8 C-USA) lead 41-36 at the half. North Texas remained close on the strength of shooting 59.1 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. Coming out of the halftime break, the Mean Green went on an 18-5 run to take a 54-46 lead. The margin grew to double digits, but FAU wouldn’t go away. The Owls trailed 73-68 with less than two minutes to go, before Raffington scored on a layup to pull

within a possession. After the Mean Green split a trip to the free throw line, Marquan Botley hit a triple to cut the deficit to a single point, 74-73. North Texas made two free throws, but FAU still had a chance to tie the game. The Owls had a good look at what would have been a game-tying three, but the shot was just off the mark. North Texas made a pair of free throws to ice the game, but Jackson Trapp hit a triple at the buzzer to provide the final score. Pablo Bertone was the only other Owl in doublefigures with 27.

Lynn Softball Extends Win Streak to Five at Sailfish Showdown By Olivia Coiro Lynn University’s softball team finished out the Sailfish Showdown hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic with a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Cathrine Sports Complex. The Blue & White claimed the first game of the day, 10-2, over GoldeyBeacom (0-5) in just five innings before taking down the Flagler Saints 3-1. The Fighting Knights improve to 11-6 on the season. Katelyn Key (2-1) pitched a complete game to open the day, tossing five innings allowing just five hits while striking out two for her second win of the season. Lynn was the first to score in the second inning, which started when Crystal Cano singled up the middle scoring Kasey Murray, who reached on an error to begin the inning. McNeill and Devin Kochergen both hit RBI’s singles to give Lynn three more runs for a 4-0 lead. Goldey-Beacom rallied in the third, driving in two runs but the Fighting Knights quickly answered back in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs on three hits and a pair of errors by the Lightning. GBC had an opportunity with bases loaded in the fourth, but Michelle

Foster grounded out to shortstop to retire the side. A one-two-three inning for the Lightning sealed Lynn’s fourth straight victory. Crystal Cano and Danielle McNeill both went 2-for-4 at the plate; scoring two runs and an RBI each while Sara Vazquez also had a multi-hit game. Cortney Dolson received the loss pitching two and to thirds innings despite not allowing an earned run for GBC. In the second game of the day, The Blue & White overcame Flagler (8-9), 3-1. Kasey Murray pitched a complete game holding the Saints to one run while allowing five hits for her sixth win of the season improving her record to 6-4. Cydney Schmidt singled up the middle for an RBI single to put the Fighting Knights on the board in the bottom of the second. Lynn added two more comfort runs the in fifth to put the finishing touches on the game. With the bases loaded Kaci Vassallo hit a sacrifice fly deep into center field scoring Vazquez, taking a 3-0 lead. Flagler pressured in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring one run on a hit and an error, but the Fighting Knights held on for a 3-1 regional win.

After falling behind in the top of the first inning, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team came back to defeat Monmouth in the rubber match 6-5 on Sunday to win the series 2-1. Monmouth (1-2) scored four runs with two outs in the first inning with the help of five hits and an FAU error to take an early lead. The Owls (5-2) came back in the bottom of the frame to post three runs as Brendon Sanger, Stephen Kerr and Tyler Rocklein led off the game with three consecutive singles to load the bases. After a sacrifice fly by Ricky Santiagoscored Sanger and a stolen base by Rocklein, redshirt freshman Esteban Puerta hit a two-out, twoRBI double to cut the lead to one. Freshman CJ Chatham led off the second with a double to left-center and Jose Bonilla Traverso reached on an error to put two on with nobody out. Sanger and Kerr singled again, followed by a double by Rocklein to put the Owls on top 6-4 after two

innings. The Hawks would load the bases in the top of the fifth before an FAU error allowed one run to score. Junior Bo Logan came on to pitch for the Owls with one out and struck out two to end the threat, leaving FAU with the 6-5 lead. Neither team managed a hit over the final three innings as the Owls held off Monmouth for the series victory. Logan earned the victory, his first of the season, striking out three in 2.2 innings of work. His first ten pitches were strikes as he allowed only one hit in his time on the hill. Junior Drew Jackson started the game for FAU, allowing four earned runs and striking out two in 4.1 innings. Senior captain Kevin Alexander picked up his second save of the season, fanning three of the six batters he faced without allowing a runner to reach base. Sanger, Kerr, Rocklein and Chatham each went 2-for-4 for the Owls, each scoring at least one run. Puerta’s two RBI led FAU in the game.

Smolen Picks Up SSC Weekly Honor By Chad Beattie The hot hand of the Lynn University women’s golf team continued with Samantha Smolen being honored as the Sunshine State Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week presented by VALIC. Smolen won her second tournament of the year and set program and tournament records with her 54-hole score. The junior out of Lake Worth, Fla., shot rounds of 72-71-73 for an even par 216 at the Lady Moc Classic.

www.bocaratontribune.com

Her 54-hole total bested the school record, set eight years ago by Natasha Morgan, by two shots while also topping the tournament record by two strokes. Smolen now owns both the 36-and 54-hole records at Lynn. In addition to her personal records, Smolen helped the Fighting Knights extend their school-best winning streak to five tournaments with a program-record total of 886. She is second on the team with a 72.85 stroke average and five top-10 finishes.

To Slide or Not At the start of the downswing, most average golfers get the rotary part right, unwinding their shoulders, but they don’t have enough lateral motion toward the target. When the rotary takes over, it not only pushes the club outside the correct arc, leading to shots that curve to the right, it also positions the swing’s low point behind the ball, producing fat or thin contact. The goal is to keep the club on the same swing arc it traced on the backswing as the hip center shifts in front of the ball, setting up a downward and outward strike. Sliding the hips toward the target causes the spine to tilt to the golfer’s right; this move must be combined with a gradual extension of the spine out of its forward tilt toward the ball-just like on the backswing. The combination of these spine actions keeps the golfer at the same level to the ground, setting up a precise return of the club to the ball.

Duck and Cover Q: If someone yells “Fore!” and I have no idea where the ball my be coming from, what do I do? A: According to Kevin Dukes, an orthopedic surgeon with the Tulsa Bone & Joint Association, “Fortytwo percent of all golf injuries are to the head and face, and 28 percent are caused by getting struck with a ball. So protect your head first.

Take shelter or cover up with your forearms. Crouching down also make you a smaller target.” Golf = Intelligence Q: What’s the average golf score for all golfers -good, bad, and abysmal? A: It’s about the same as the average IQ for all humans: 100. For men, the average golf score is 97; for women, 114.

Like A Rock Q: Is it true that warm balls will go farther than cold balls? A: Yes, it’s true. The colder the ball gets, the less resilient the plastics inside, and the harder the ball becomes. Your driving distance could go down by as much as 30 percent. It’s akin to the difference between hitting a superball and a rock. When you hit a solid object,

you lose a lot of energy on impact. Springy rubber, on the other hand, temporarily absorbs the impact, keeping the ball in contact with the club longer. The ball flattens a bit and then springs back to a round, shape launching itself like a shot from the clubhead

No. 4 Men’s Tennis Remains Unbeaten Lynn University’s men’s tennis team (7-0, 4-0 SSC) defeated No. 43 Florida Tech, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights improve to 19-2 all-time against the Panthers with the win. The Blue & White was led by senior Alessio Iannozzi who won both his matches to lift the team to its fourth Sunshine State Conference victory of the season. Iannozzi teamed with Thomas Porkop in the No. 3 doubles slot for the Fighting Knights where they defeated Riley Lorenz and Daniel Armellino, 8-2, to put Lynn ahead 1-0. Vlad Cirla and Roman Turtygin took down Beau Fieldsend and Matic Leskovar, 8-5, but Florida Tech’s singles duo of Wade Ball and Patrick

Hernandez beat the Blue & White’s top pair, Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli, in a hard fought match, 9-8. No. 17 Vlad Cirla retired in his singles match when he was down to Hernandez, 0-2, in the first set giving the Panthers their second point. Lynn’s Porkop won at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-2, over Armellino. Iannozzi’s three-set victory over Fieldsend (63, 4-6, 6-1) put the Fighting Knights within one point of clinching the SSC win. Riggs defeated Leskovar in straight sets of 6-4 to give the Blue & White a 5-2 lead. Volpicelli and Giulio Gomba had wins in the fifth and sixth spots for Lynn to complete the win.

Lynn Men’s Lacrosse 2014 Season Preview Lynn University’s men’s lacrosse team will begin its inaugural season this spring and head coach Brian Kingsbury is excited to get the season started. The main theme Kingsbury has embedded into his new team is culture. Starting a new program is not an easy task and Kingsbury claims that is why he took the job, he loves challenges. This will be a year of many firsts for the lacrosse team and Kingsbury and the entire group is ready to get underway. Lynn was picked sixth in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coach’s Poll and despite low expectations, Kingsbury is ready to show up and surprise the league. Not only is it the inaugural season of lacrosse for Lynn, it is also the first season for the Sunshine State Conference. SSC play begins on March 19, when the Blue & White travels to Rollins. The Fighting Knights will open up the newly constructed Bobby Campbell Stadium on March 30, against Colorado Mesa before hosting their final two conference games against Florida Southern and Tampa at the multi-million dollar facility. Lacrosse marks the third sport expansion in two years at Lynn University. Last year the Fighting Knights welcomed women’s cross country and women’s swimming.

Both teams have achieved success on the national level, sending athletes to the NCAA Championships in 2013 while also earning All-Sunshine State Conference accolades. The season kicks off Monday, March 3, against Wheeling Jesuit at 7 p.m. on the campus of Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton. In non-conference play the Fighting Knights will face teams from across the country and will take a mid-March road trip to Atlanta, Ga., to face-off against Shorter and Lenoir-Rhyne. From the cage out, the men’s lacrosse team has the tools it needs to build a successful program and join the elite level of Lynn University’s 13 other programs. Taylor Ferrino, a freshman from Orchard Park, N.Y., will be the Fighting Knights go-to guy in net, with Jason Conner behind him. Conner is able to play both goalkeeper and defender when called upon. At the face-off spot, the Blue & White have Chris D’Angelo out of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Vincent Genovesi from Coventry, Conn. Other key defenders are freshmen Shaun McDonald and Chase Ostermann. The midfield is anchored by Dante Egan and Gage Smith while Austin Jerhoff, Tyler Janvrin and Brian Kiel will be the key attack men for Lynn. February 28, through March 06, 2014
