TEDxbocaraton Launches Its Premiere Event TEDx, an independently organized TED event, TEDxBocaRaton makes its debut with a program designed with the mission Ideas worth spreading. Featuring an intriguing full line up of speakers, it will take place Friday, May 9 in the University Theatre on the Florida Atlantic University campus. The conference is an array of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances by experts on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder — and also to trigger interesting conversations and ideas that matter. For this Boca Raton debut of TEDx talks, the event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $100, and include all meals and beverages and a seat in the main auditorium. Tickets for students have limited availability and include all meals and beverages for $30, and seating in the simulcast lounge. BocaLocals announces the winner of their new annual competition focused on finding the “best balls” in and around the Boca Raton. This month long competition was extraordinary in that all 16 participating restaurants were visited by a small panel of judges - in search for traditional and unique meatballs. • PASCAL DEPUHL happily created advertising photography for his clients and began to see that people surfing the web were shifting to mobile devices. Believing that video was going to become the online language of choice in a few years, he began his learn filmmaking. Pascal believes we all have a gift within us that we need to discover and be enabled to do what we are supposed to do with our lives. It is a gift that you can’t learn in school, it is ours to develop. One film that kept on popping into his mind was the idea of shooting a documentary for a humanitarian organization in Afghanistan, but that seemed so ludicrous he thought it must be crazy. But where there is a will and a huge dream, there’s a way and over the next few months all the doors opened. In the winter of 2012 he filmed in Afghanistan telling the story of what the flight service does. A sudden accident involving a child enabled him to tell a very gripping story of the NGOs service. This wild ride has not stopped, BBC, National Geographic, PBS have all featured footage from Pascal’s documentary. He has taught seminars on how to break into cinematography for photographers and has spoken at conferences about the importance of taking tremendous risks to be able to change people’s minds. He grew up in Germany and Chicago and now lives with his wife
and two children in Miami. • BRAD SHORT started his journey with parkour at the age of 14. Parkour is an athleticdiscipline, in which participants negotiate any environment in as efficiently as possible using their physical abilities. It commonly involves running, jumping, vaulting, rolling, and other similar physical movements. Brad became fascinated after seeing a film about parkour, and knew it was what he wanted to do. He started his own YouTube channel in 2011 dedicated to showcasing his parkour abilities and became recognized for his intense ability and daring stunts. He has built a name for himself within the parkour community and quickly reached a point of training with the most recognized and talented parkour athletes in the world. Brad attended Florida Atlantic University and pursued a degree in exercise science. In February 2011, he became a certified parkour and freerunning instructor through the World Freerunning and Parkour Federation (WFPF). Brad has made a career for himself through parkour doing performances for companies like Equinox, The Coral Gables Museum, and participating in stunt work for films. He also enjoys teaching the art of parkour to those willing to learn.

There go I for the Grace I checked in with my business partner much, much later than usual the other day. When we finally connected, she said, “I was giving you one more hour before I called police.” I thought she was joking; she was dead serious. I apologized and told her I had been on the phone with a client for a few hours. I found her anxiety a little strange. But then I thought about the case we were working. I got it. For the past six weeks, we’ve been investigating the case of Wellington black businessman Marvin Williams, serving three years in Sumter Correctional Institution for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. What happened to Mr. Marvin Williams could have happened to any black man in America. My professional brothers look out! Marvin was one of us, clean record and all, and he still got arrested and convicted with overwhelming evidence that should have freed him. It goes to show that gun laws can be twisted at will, especially in places like Central Florida. The way I see it, Mr. Williams was convicted before he even had the trial. He was a black man, who
owned and traveled with a gun. He even had a permit. A white man, an enraged driver, accused him of pointing a gun at him on Florida’s turnpike. He’d even called the Florida Highway Patrol unbeknownst to Mr. Williams. The driver tailed Mr. Williams as if he were “Five-O” for miles on the Turnpike. Mr. Williams had even flashed a highway patrolman traveling southbound to get his attention. Mr. Williams finally pulled off an exit ramp and stopped, on his own accord. He wanted to see if the other driver was still following him. Florida Highway Patrol arrived in seconds. Mr. Williams did have a gun. But it didn’t fit the accuser’s initial description and it would have been hard for him to pull it out of the glove compartment, traveling at a high rate of speed on the Turnpike, turn around while driving and point it at the accuser to his left. He also was left handed. There were no other witnesses. But facts like these don’t matter when you are up against overzealous whites in Central Florida. Plain and simple- you lose.
The region is getting a lot of publicity because of how it handles criminal cases involving African Americans. Mr. Williams is the norm, not the exception. My company, CRA Media Group, took on the case because as a black man I could see myself as Mr. Williams. We are not attorneys but crisis managers and public relations strategists. We have spent weeks poring over documents and depositions to see how Mr. Williams could have been convicted. It just doesn’t add up. The evidence—the gun-- was mishandled, shown to the accuser at the scene, in fact, and the prosecutor, who stated in a 2008 article in the Orlando Sentinel, “Lake County Prosecutor Admit: Sometimes Trial Witnesses are Less Than Saints,” acknowledges that the state often relies on testimony of convicted criminals to make their cases. She did just that in this case. So, it wasn’t against her nature to keep the accuser’s criminal background, which included drug possession charges and impersonating a police officer, out of court. Not too many things frighten me, but I can say that my anxiety grows every time I drive
through Central Florida. I may just do or say the wrong thing in the wrong place. Yes, I’m the guy who points out wrong doings no matter who the culprit is, including law enforcement officers. I’m often told my mouth will get me in trouble one day. In Mr. Williams’ case, it was the prevailing thought that blacks carry weapons to harm, which did him in. The fact that the accuser thought he saw a black man with a gun and that Mr. Williams actually had a gun in his glove box was too much of a coincidence for the prosecutor and the jury. But a good attorney would have been able to counter with evidence and probability. And, Mr. Williams, falling under the misguided belief of many educated and professional blacks, myself included, relied on logic and the rules of a legal system which often does not consider the true rights of blacks in this country. Mr. Williams’ “What the hell?” moment should resonate across the country to all of us black men, who believe we are immune to derisiveness because we have achieved.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx
Does Integrity Really Matter? A survey conducted by the Ethics Resource Center found 45 percent of the people in today’s workforce have personally observed ethical misconduct in the workplace. This is a staggeringly high percentage, an alarming commentary on the current state of the business and professional world. Yet we seem to have come to accept this sort of thing as a normal part of business. With the challenging and complex worldwide economy and business climate, we not only shrug at such behavior but also begin to tell ourselves we cannot survive in the marketplace if we play by the rules. “You do whatever you have to do to get - or retain - business,” many people believe. Sadly we have separated our faith from our work and left God out of the
equation. But my years of experience in the business and professional world, both as a businessman and consultant, I have seen evidence again and again that integrity does matter. It matters to God. The Lord has called His followers to raise the standard and become examples for those we work with and encounter every day. It matters - or should matter - to you and me. And it matters to businesspeople like Rita. I met Rita at a conference. After we got acquainted, she confided she was struggling with a moral dilemma in her business. In her words, she felt “convicted” about a decision she was pressured to make. Two years earlier Rita had entered into a partnership with two other people,
neither of whom shared her faith in Jesus Christ. Over time it became clear many of the decisions her partners were making, without her support, were ethically questionable at best. In her heart Rita knew what she needed to do, but lacked the courage to do it. To not take a stand would require compromising her ethics and personal beliefs. After hearing me speak to a group of business owners, however, Rita knew she had to uphold the biblical principles that she believed in, dissolve the partnership, and walk away from the business. I felt thankful for being able to connect with Rita and help her come to terms with the action God had clearly been asking her to do, even though it was difficult. Rita knew her decision probably would
not result in a change in her former partners’ business practices, but realized how critical it was to live and work in a manner consistent with the faith she professed. The Old Testament book of Proverbs tells benefits of holding to high standards of integrity: A sense of peace. “The man (person) of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out” (Proverbs 10:9). A source for guidance. “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity” (Proverbs 11:3). A feeling of security. “Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner” (Proverbs 13:6).

People change, circumstances are altered, and even some terms lose their original meaning. Moreover, the actual content of the inquiry may sometimes require a broader understanding! The necessity of repeating questions is not necessarily due to one forgetting an answer received earlier, nor because the response provided was insufficient, or not understood when first given. It’s simply because for certain inquiries the
best understanding seldom comes all at once, but only gradually, in installments, via repetition! Asking again may originate from a different inquiring angle, or with additional, related information in view, so as to secure a more comprehensive understanding of the query. These and other related issues necessitate these small increments to many of the questions we ask on a regular basis! Most of all, a question requires clarity of language and adequacy of sound, if orally presented, or cogent composition, if offered in written form. Words
by themselves may fail to communicate what one is after. Yet, when employed with clarity for the sake of the responder, the probability of a satisfying answer greatly increases. Furthermore, replies can and must be amplified as new experiences blend with, and uniquely impact one’s life, while new ideas also merge with some already obtained. All that brings a broader understanding, shedding new light into related issues not even inquired about! People who don’t ask needed questions, will fail to understand where they
must go, what is expected of them, as well as what they are to avoid, or what is of utmost urgency. People who are unresponsive, when asked, contribute to the paralysis of necessary tasks that are to advance ahead, besides persons who must move forward! Don’t ever hesitate to ask what you need to ask, as many times it may be necessary for you, until the answers are clear and fully satisfactory to you. Once you have them, keep moving forward knowing that new questions shall emerge, as this cycle of inquiry continues!

Her students have embraced their civic responsibilities throughout the year with multiple letter-writing campaigns, so working to reduce global warming was the logical next step to put Civics into action. “Civics in action is the best way to learn Civics,” Oyer said. “The concepts are often difficult for students at this age to understand, but they do understand that their efforts, as well as their money, can make a difference in the world. And living in South Florida, students understand how fragile the environment is—planting trees improves the world’s air quality and hopefully will help reduce the temperature fluctuations that are causing the seas to rise which will impact all of us here in Palm Beach County in the decades to come.”

Single Family House Fire On April 29, 2014 at approximately 5:36PM Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services responded to a report of a structure fire located at 3080 NW 23rd Court. Upon their arrival the first arriving units saw smoke coming from the garage and roof area. Firefighters had to make forcible entry through the garage door in order to gain access and extinguished the fire. The home was occu-
pied during the fire. One of the occupants admitted to discarding a cigarette butt into a trash can in the garage. Sometime after that they notice a large volume of smoke and heat coming from the garage. The fire and smoke caused an estimated $150,000.00 of damage to the structure and its contents. There were no reported injuries.

Office Depot Executive Charged With DUI By Jason Schwartz
Stephen E. Hare, recently named Chief Financial Officer of Boca-based Office Depot, was recently arrested and charged with DUI, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. A Boca Raton police officer stopped Hare
after he clocked his Audi driving 57 in a 35 mph on Palmetto Park Road shortly after 11:30 p.m. April 27, according to a police report. Hare struggled to complete a field sobriety test and he registered a blood alcohol content of .180 and .186 – twice the legal limit - in two tests. He was booked into jail a short time later and released to his own custody the next morning. The Sabal Palm Drive resident joined Office Depot following its merger with OfficeMax late in 2013. He received a $500,000 bonus and stock and stock options potentially worth several million dollars.
Boca Man Accused of Fleeing Scene After Crash

Police arrested and charged a Boca Raton man they said hit a car and injured the driver then fled the scene without offering to help, according to a police report. Boca Raton police charged Edward Alan Patterson, 44, with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving with a suspended license. Patterson was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on $3,000 bail.
The crash occurred March 1 shortly after 4:30 p.m. when Patterson hit a gray Volkswagen Jetta driven by Toni Ann Parrinello, 59, of Delray Beach, according to the report. Parrinello was northbound on North Military Trail when she saw a white, older model Cadillac at the stop sign at the intersection of Park Place. The driver of the Cadillac pulled away from the stop sign, struck the Jetta on the right side, then sped away, according to the report. A witness called 911 and gave the Cadillac's license plate number to dispatch, which helped police track down Patterson, according to the report. Parrinello identified Patterson from a photo lineup.
Body found 30 Years ago in New York Identified as Missing Boca Woman

The body of a Boca Raton woman who disappeared 30 years ago has been identified, officials in New York said. Twenty-year-old Shari Lynne Ball disappeared after telling her family she was going to New York to become a model in June 1983. Her family reported her missing then to the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office. Four months later, a hunter found her badly decomposed body on a rural road in the
town of Shelby, in Orleans County. Investigators were unable to identify Ball, and buried her as a Jane Doe. Investigators say she contacted a friend from a truck stop in Ashland, Virginia a day or two after she left Florida to start a modeling career but was never heard from again. Authorities say they were never able to identify the body until late last year when they developed the break in the case. The body was exhumed and a DNA analysis was performed. Investigators say a match was made to a family member who had entered their DNA several years ago. Ball, 5’ 04”, 100 pounds, with hazel eyes and blonde hair and was also known to use the name of Timmerman when she disappeared, authorities say. The cause of death has been ruled undetermined, but investigators suspect foul play. Anyone who knew Ball, or anyone who may be able to provide any information about her, is urged to contact New York State Police at 585-344-6210.
101 Cantina Closes Amidst Chaos Boca Raton’s 101 Cantina, a bar that became the hotspot for a rowdy college crowd is officially closed. The bar has been a hot topic among residents due to the nearly 100 arrests that Boca Raton Police made at the popular bar on 133 SE Mizner Boulevard. Management officials of the Gainesvillebased company confirmed that the Boca Raton location closed earlier this month, but refused to state why. Although owners are not speaking as to the reason why the bar closed, the speculation is that they failed to pay their fine from the State Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which monitors liquor licenses. “For the last 9 months the peace and respect that are cornerstones of our com-
munity have been upended and egregiously violated by 101 Cantina whose disrespectful and unlawful behavior has marred our great city’s value system, ” said Downtown resident Mark Seigel. Seigel took his complaints all the way to City Council, where he asked that the city would intervene. Looks as if the City didn’t have to do much and that Seigel needed a little patience. “101 Cantina operates as a raucous drinking establishment for college students--- many of whom, according to public records, are below the legal drinking age. It has assaulted our community with obnoxious music, intoxicated customers, and violent situations that have required significant police intervention.”

Evening Star Productions Presents Matt Connor’s Nevermore
Composer Matt Connor’s fascination with Edgar Allan Poe began when he picked up a $5.00 anthology of Poe’s work at a second hand bookshop. Poe’s darkly gothic works have haunted, horrified, and fascinated readers since their publication in the mid nineteenth century. But as bizarre and macabre as his writing was, Poe’s life was equally strange, and Connor has crafted the story of poet’s often tortured and emotionally wrought life into a unique, powerful, and contemporary musical, Nevermore. Evening Star Productions will present the South Florida premiere of Nevermore from May 9th through May 18th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. “Nevermore is about the acceptance of self in the face of death,” Matt Conner said in a recent interview. “The show opens as Edgar Allan Poe has ‘collapsed’ (as he did in Baltimore on the eve of his death) We then take a ride along with him and five other women as his life flashes before his eyes. “Nevermore exemplifies the mission I envisioned for Evening Star,” explains the

“The Other Woman” Finds Revenge
“The Other Woman” is a chick flick comedy with balls. I mean that in a positive way. The male sex takes quite a bashing in this anti-romantic comedy, written by Melissa Stack and directed by Nick Cassavetes. Cassavetes previously showed his in-touch feminine side in “The Notebook” in 2004. “The Other Woman” is a raunchy sex comedy, but not as raunchy as “The Bridesmaids.” There are less gross bodily humor jokes and more pointed satire about male ego and vanity. Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Waldu) is so vain and egotistical he thinks he is God’s gift to women. He is married to the perfectly adorable Kate (Leslie Mann) but he is cheating on her with high-powered executive hottie Carly Whitten (Cameron Diaz). Mark has lied about his marital state, but Carly is no fool. Well, maybe she is a bit foolish when she looks up Mark’s address and pays a surprise visit to his house. Ever since she rocketed to stardom with “There’s Something About Mary” in 1998, Diaz has proved she is a beautiful actress who is not afraid of getting roughed up and dirtied in the cause of comedy. Why is it Hard to Start Working Out? The hardest thing for most people to accomplish is starting something new. What people do not realize is that their life is a routine that they have become used to. Humans are creatures of habit. That is why we do the same things, the same way, over and over. To do something new requires a change in this pattern and most people do not like doing that. So if you decide to work out at a certain time, than you must change the time that whatever you were doing takes place. This in itself is often enough to get people to revert back to what they were previously doing in a short time. Any reason is a good reason to get back. If you choose to start working out after work, then start slowly and see what you missed. Was it the news or some favorite
show? Then record it. When you get home to watch it, then what ever you did at that time will now have to change as well, and so on. So it is not just one thing that you need to alter. So now you see one part of the reason it is hard to start a workout. Another reason is that when you work out you will burn calories that your body is not used to burning. Now something else that has to change. You body will gladly do this one time, however it expects that you will now eat more, if possible, and replenish the lost calories. But if you do this, than you will not lose any weight. Now you have upset things even further. If you take is slow and persist you will accomplish your goals. You just have to train your body that everything is okay and develop a new routine.
Boca Ballet Theatre Presents Dance Fest – A Repertory Concert Boca Ballet Theatre presents Dance Fest, a mixed repertory concert comprised of a spicy blend of classical, neoclassical and contemporary work. The program features the choreographic talents of Boca Ballet Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director, Dan Guin, and the Russian masters, George Balanchine and Marius Petipa. The audience will be astounded by the classic works performed in this production, including Valse-Fantaisie, Boca Baroque, Piano Man, and Paquita, featuring special guest artists from Louisville Ballet. Paquita, by Marius Petipa, the “King of Russian classical ballet”, and staged by Donald Tolj, includes variations that are considered to be some of ballet’s most celebrated examples of 19th-century classicism—and some of the most difficult. How Do You Handle Your Anger? Of all the many emotions we display and encounter during a typical workday, anger is probably the most common. There are many reasons for this, but since I am not a psychologist I will not speculate on all the causes. I do think we can agree there are many angry people in the workplace these days. Perhaps you are one of them. Sometimes unreasonable deadlines and work pressures spark anger. Unfulfilled goals and unrealized expectations can leave us feeling angry. Conflicts with colleagues and coworkers, especially those having personalities that do not mesh with our own, can arouse our ire. We carry conflict from home to work, or from work to our homes, leading to unexpected and often unjustified displays of anger. Some of us have grown up with anger boiling inside of us, just waiting for an excuse to explode. In most instances, uncontrolled expressions of anger are detrimental, causing damage that proves difficult to repair. So how do we handle it? When someone bumps our emotional bucket and anger starts to spill out, what can we do? Recently I was reading a story about a businessman who thought he had succeeded in being awarded a major contract. This transaction deal would have been the largest in his company’s history, taking his department’s production to unprecedented heights. Unfortunately, before the agreement was formalized the potential clients had a change of heart and elected to work with another company instead. Understandably, the business executive was extremely disappointed. In fact, he became more than that. He boiled with anger and considered storming into the headquarters of the client that had
reneged on the deal. He would inform anyone and everyone how wrongfully his company had been treated. If his angry thoughts had been bullets, a lot of people would have been wounded. Before acting on this impulse, however, he took some time to calm down and ultimately decided to remain silent. He reasoned that although a strong display of emotion would feel cathartic, it would gain nothing. Since anger is so pervasive, the Bible has much to say about it. Here are just a few examples: Seek to resolve disagreements promptly. Conflict is normal, but if we allow angry feelings to seethe and simmer, the magnitude of the dispute can escalate far beyond what is warranted. “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry…” (Ephesians 4:26). Do not let anger turn into bitterness. Disagreements usually can be resolved, but harboring angry feelings can lead to bitterness that damages, even destroys relationships. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” (Ephesians 4:31). Listening, rather than speaking, can quell angry outbursts. It often helps to keep silent and listen, rather than quickly responding angrily when provoked. Sometimes we become angry simply because we fail to properly understand what someone is saying. Even if we still disagree, calmly discussing differences is more productive than angry demonstrations. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires” (James 1:19-20).
Violation and Modification Q: My former wife and I have one child, a son now five years of age. When we were divorced two years ago we entered into a Parenting Plan which called for me to have typical access rights to our son, alternating weekends with four over nights each weekend. In the original case she had counsel and I did not. During the first few months after our agreement and the entry of the final judgment incorporating that agreement, and others, my former wife announced that our son was not yet ready to have overnights with me because of the disruption of our marriage and various illnesses that she claimed he suffered. Ultimately she just refused to allow me to have any overnights with my son, and I have had none. To be clear, there have been no accusations whatsoever against my ability to take care of our son during overnights. I know that I have some paths through the legal system to correct this breach of our parenting agreement but I have tried to avoid conflict and save expenses. I have decided to take the bull by the horns and try to enforce my rights. What is my next step? What remedies are available to me? A: There are at least two remedies which are open to you. You can file a motion for contempt against your former wife for having violated the Final Judgment of Dissolution of marriage, because that incorporated your parent-
ing plan. This would ultimately get you a court order holding your former wife in contempt of court by her frequent violation of the final judgment and parenting Plan. The court’s order would come accompanied by a strong verbal admonition in open court and a threat that if she continued to deny you access to your son she could be put in jail for contempt, either civil or criminal. Her past performance can also provide you grounds to file a Petition for Modification of the parenting plan asking the judge to provide you with the lion’s share of the overnights and your former wife with the alternate weekends. Grounds for a modification require a material change of circumstances which appear to be permanent, and were not voluntary on your part. Florida appellate decisions would allow the court to find that her unilateral change in the parenting provisions in your Parenting Plan and Final judgment meet the criteria. This second road is more complex than the first; a change in the parenting arrangement carries with it a re-calculation in your child support obligations because of the shift of overnights to you from your former wife. Forms You’ll Want to Have Handy to Sell Your Home Don’t be caught off guard when you sell your home. It is important to be prepared before you have an offer on the table. By doing so will enhance and strengthen your negotiation skills. There are several key documents you should have at your disposal. Whenever you receive an offer or sale your home, it is important to get EVERYTHING IN WRITING!! The following documents will help you when the time is right… 1. Sellers Property Disclosure Form: This form you will fill out prior to putting the property up for sale. This form will let the potential buyer know of any known defects about the property. Why would you want to do this? By disclosing the information to the Buyer you keep yourself out
of the court room and avoid legality issues. So be honest and forthcoming with this information. 2. Sales Contract: This is an agreement between you and the buyer. This contract outlines the terms and conditions of the sale. There are many important details which need to be negotiated out within the contract. Many people have tunnel vision and think price is the only factor which needs to be negotiated and inserted into a contract. They do not realize how many other details and dates are important to the transaction. If you do not FULLY UNDERSTAND this document then contact a local Realtor or Real Estate Attorney. Don’t be caught off guard!!
3. Pre and Post-Occupancy Agreements: This agreement is used if you are going to allow the Buyer to move in prior to closing or you plan on occupying the home after the day of the closing. This document will set the terms and costs once the sell closes. 4. Lead Based Paint Disclosure (If home is built prior to 1978): If your home is built prior to 1978, you must supply a pamphlet to the Buyers and have them initial and sign the proper documentation. This will indicate that they have read and understood this information. 5. Commission Agreement: If a Real Estate Agent brings you a buyer for the home they are going to want
to get paid. This documentation will state commission rate and terms in which you will pay the agent. New Chief Development Officer
Amy Brand has been named Chief Development Officer of Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County. Amy has 20 years of nonprofit development experience in the South Florida area, beginning with chairing many communitywide charitable events. Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute is the first in the state of Florida to operate the SensorySuite by GE Healthcare. SensorySuite surrounds a woman with an interactive mammography experience designed to simultaneously stimulate three senses: sight, smell and hearing, helping to distract the patient from any perceived discomfort, pain and anxiety of a mammogram. “It is our belief that the SensorySuite will provide a woman with a sense of serenity through its calming environment while still utilizing the most state-ofthe-art mammography technology. It is the perfect combination of high tech and high touch,” said, Kathy Schilling, MD, Medical Director of the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. A recent study performed by GE Healthcare with 250 patients in two different SensorySuite sites showed that 64.4 percent of women felt relaxed during the mammogram examination and 99.6 percent of all the patients were likely to return to the same facility for their
next mammogram. By giving women the control to choose from one of three environmental ambiances - seaside, garden or waterfall - SensorySuite aims to encourage a better overall mammography experience and enhanced cooperation and compliance. “Mammograms play an essential role in the early detection of breast cancer and therefore, survival rate. The new institute will serve as a “centralized address” for women’s healthcare needs and information, providing a convenient one-stop shop for women, with coordinated access to the broad spectrum of services at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. A comprehensive array of integrated services will be specifically targeted to women as they pass through the continuum of healthcare issues during their lifetime, from reproductive years and maternity care through menopause and aging. Strikers Remain Perfect at Lockhart; Move to Third Place in NASL Standings

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers moved up to third place in the NASL standings following a 3-2 victory against Indy Eleven in a thrilling match at Lockhart Stadium Saturday night. An early goal from Strikers winger Martin Nuñez was canceled out on a penalty kick from Kleberson in a fast and furious opening 45 minutes. Second half goals from Fafà Picault and Marius Ebbers proved the difference while a late strike from Indy Eleven’s Erick Norales was merely a consolation. The Strikers took it to Indy Elven from the opening whistle and got on the board in just the eighth minute. Carlos Salazar spotted Nuñez on the left side of the box. Some tricky footwork from the Uruguayan created just enough space for a hard, right-footed shot that went past Kristian Nicht in the Indy Eleven goal. Indy Eleven were on the back foot following the goal, but equalized after a bit of good fortune. The Strikers were called for a handball in the box and Kleberson stepped up to take the penalty kick. Oka Nikolov guessed correctly on the shot, but the Brazilian’s effort was perfectly placed in the bottom right corner. Indy were encouraged by the goal and stepped up the attack. Mike Ambersley had a chance go wide after a Strikers giveaway in midfield. Moments later Mark Anderson let rip from distance but a strong hand from Nicht prevented the Strikers from taking the lead. The visitors had a chance to go ahead at the end of the half but were denied on a goal-line clearance from Justin Chavez. Mike Ambersley pounced on a rebound after Oka Nikolov had raced out of his box to deny an onrushing Indy attacker. Ambersley’s first-time effort was hard and low, but Chavez was on the line to make the goal-saving block. Substitutions proved the difference for the Strikers in the search for a winning goal. Fafà Picault’s introduction injected pace down the right flank. The pacey winger was on hand to head home a pinpoint cross from Guerrero for his first goal in Strikers colors, giving the Strikers a 2-1 advantage. Guerrero, who led the Strikers in assists last season, moved up to the top of the list this season with two on the night. Minutes after Picault’s goal, German forward Marius Ebbers got on the end of Guerrero’s cross from the left to double the hosts lead. It was the forward’s first goal for the Strikers. The Eleven struck in stoppage time through defender Erick Norales, but it was too little too late as the referee blew the final whistle on the restart. “We are very proud of our guys’ performance,” said Strikers head cach Günter Kronsteiner. “Indy has a great team; they came in with two ties against two very good teams, so to get a win against this team is a great accomplishment.”
FAU Track And Field Concludes Regular Season at North Florida The Florida Atlantic University track and field team competed in Jacksonville on Saturday, April 26 at the North Florida Invitational, the Owls’ final regular season meet. Danielle Aromashodu recorded her second best time ever in the 400 meter hurdles with a final time of 58.82. The senior earned second-place at the meet and extended her lead in Conference USA. Sitia Martinez and Lauren Walton also competed in the event, picking up fourth and fifth place, respectively. Deja Jones finished section one of the 100 meter dash in sixth-place with a final time of 11.84, a new personal record. Regina
Wilkerson followed in seventh-place in 11.85. Sitia Martinez finished the second section of the event in second-place with a final time of 11.88 for a new personal record. In the 200 meter dash, Wilkerson and Jones both recorded personal records. Wilkerson finished fourth in the first section of the event, crossing the finish line in 24.15. Jones finished sixth in 24.50. Rounding out FAU’s competitors at the meet was Nathaly Gallego in the 5k. Four to be Inducted into Lynn Athletics Hall of Fame

Lynn University has seen 46 names over 13 induction classes enshrined in its Athletic Hall of Fame. On Tuesday, April 29, the Fighting Knights will pay tribute to four more alumni, Julien Carsuzaa (Men’s Tennis) Andrew Farmer (Men’s Golf), Gabe MacDougall (Baseball) and Victoria Weltz (Women’s Tennis), as the Class of 2014 will be inducted at the Annual Student-Athlete Awards Show. In addition, the late Dr. Francisco Rincon and his family will be presented with the Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award, honoring his special contributions to Lynn University and its Athletic Department. Rincon passed away September 30, 2013 but leaves a permanet legacy on Lynn University’s athletic department. Born in Fusagasuga, Colombia, Dr. Rincon was a founding supporter of the Lynn University athletics programs in 1981 and remained a loyal friend and avid fan until the end. He served as the men’s & women’s soccer team physician for the 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995 national championship squads and was known to spread his positive influence throughout all of the Fighting Knights athletic programs. A four-year letterwinner from 2006-09, Carsuzaa helped lead Lynn University’s men’s tennis program back to the top of the national rankings. A six-time ITA All-American for both singles and doubles, he guided the Fighting Knights to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish as a freshman and the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship in 2007. Carsuzaa later paired with Dennis Riegraf in the fall of 2007 to become the first tennis players in program history, men or women, to win the ITA Small College Super Bowl. He would go on to claim two Sunshine State Conference titles (2006 & 2007), be named a seven-time All-SSC selection and garner SSC Player of the Year and ITA National Senior Player of the Year accolades as a senior in 2009. He left Lynn as the leader in doubles victories in a season (22 – 2006) and singles (73) and doubles (79) victories in a career. Farmer joined Lynn University in 1994 and played two seasons with the men’s golf
team. Although his time with the Blue & White was brief, his accolades and accomplishments have helped build the men’s golf program to what it is today. Farmer anchored Lynn’s first and only men’s golf national championship squad in 1996, leading the team with a 75.02 stroke average. He was twice named a NAIA All-American and left the program as the leader in top-10 finishes in a season and career. His season record was tied in 2006 and broken in 2011 while his career mark was surpassed in 2006. A baseball alum has been inducted everyother year since 2006, with MacDougall becoming the latest to join the ranks. A three-year letterwinner from 2006-09, he put the Fighting Knights on the map by helping lead his team to the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship while also being named the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN Magazine National Academic All-American of the year, both of which were program firsts. MacDougall claimed SSC ScholarAthlete of the Year honors and was an ABCA and Daktronics All-American selection before being drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 27th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. After his playing days, he held season records for home runs in a season (22) and career records for home runs (39) and doubles (50) while being second in total bases (358) and RBIs (167). A model of consistency throughout her four years at Lynn, Weltz lettered from 2005-08 with the women’s tennis team. The Fighting Knights did not drop a SSC regular-season match as a team all four of her seasons (32-0) and won three SSC Titles (2006-08) with her at the top of the singles and doubles lineup. Lynn finished as the 2008 NCAA Division II National RunnersUp and was twice national semifinalists. Weltz was a four-time ITA All-American for singles and doubles and seven-time All-SSC honoree. In 2006, she was named the SSC Player of the Year. Upon graduation, she ranked first (26), second (24) and fourth (23) in doubles victories in a season, ranked first in doubles victories (99) and doubles winning percentage (.952) while owning three of the program’s eight perfect doubles seasons. The Class of 2014 becomes the 14th class to be inducted into the Lynn University Athletic Hall of Fame. Women’s Tennis leads the way with nine members, followed closely by men’s soccer with eight, women’s soccer with seven and administrators/ coaches with six selections. Baseball is next with five picks while women’s basketball, men’s golf and men’s tennis each have three honorees. Men’s basketball, women’s golf and softball all have two selections and volleyball holds one pick.

Club Managers Teeing Off ‘Fore’ National, Regional Kids’ Charities Florida’s Seminole Region of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is hitting the greens for their annual charity golf tournament to raise money for children’s charities. The event has two components – Marathon Golf, now in its fourth year, from May 13 to June 2, followed by the 24th Annual Best Ball Tournament. For Marathon Golf, the Managers’ membership, their recruits and other entrants tee off at several area courses with pledges made for every hole of golf played. Last year, the Seminole Region of the Florida CMAA raised over $500,000, of which $100,000 was collected by the Marathon Golfers. This year’s goal is $200,000. The one-day Best Ball Tournament will then be held at Boca West on June 9th preceded by the Grand Gala on the 8th attended by over 800 guests. The Best Ball tournament is one of the most impressive golf events of its kind with over 400 participants on four courses. No other one-day tournament has this many golfers participating for a single charity. At the same time, the Marathon event is also unlike other tournaments - “unconventional” by many standards. “Yes, we adhere to the basic scoring rules of golf, but that’s where it ends. It’s not about protocol, it’s about having fun while raising money. In essence, we challenge everyone to play until they drop,” mused Gary Collins, tournament committee member and country club manager at Frenchman’s

With Marathon Golf, some of us have played more than 140 holes and finish up playing in the dark with flashlights!” “The objective with this event is to make a dramatic difference in the lives of thousands of children in need through our beneficiaries,” explained Jay DiPietro, tournament chairman and manager of Boca West Country Club. “We always strive to surpass the funds raised the previous year. This year is no exception.” Virtually all the proceeds go directly to the South Florida chapters of the various charities. The Marathon Golf event has no overhead, greens fees are waived and all the food for the Gala is donated. Beneficiary charities include Toys for Tots, The Special Olympics, SOS Children’s Villages, The George Snow Scholarship Fund, The Unicorn Children’s Foundation, FlorenceFuller Child Development Centers and The First Tee of the Palm Beaches. “Our mission is to impact the lives of young people, including those with disabilities, with educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing core values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf,” said Carl Mistretta, executive chairman of The First Tee of the Palm Beaches. “We’re excited to be working with the Florida Seminole Region of CMAA. Lynn Women’s Golf National Title Defense Begins with NCAA Tournament Bid By Chad Beattie
The NCAA announced the field for the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Tournament on Monday afternoon and Lynn University is standing front and center in its bid to repeat as national champions. The Fighting Knights are the top-seed out of nine schools in the South Super Regional, qualifying as a team for the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year and 13th time in program history. Lynn begins competition in the super regional on the same course it had just won the Sunshine State Conference Championship on. The Blue & White will compete from Sunday, May 4, through Tuesday, May 6, at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla. The top three teams, along with the top three individuals not with a team, advances to the national championships held May 14-17, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. Lynn ended a 15-year national championship drought by winning the fourth national crown in program history, and No. 21 for the University, at LPGA International last year. With all five starters returning, the Fighting Knights have created a season for the ages, winning nine of the 11 tournaments they have played, including tying a league record with seven consecutive victories. They ended the season with wins at the Bash-at-theBeach Invite and the SSC Championship, the first conference title in program’s storied history. All five players are ranked in the top-31 with junior Jessica Bradley earning the no. 1 ranking in Division II and 47th ranking in

Division I, II and III, NJCAA and NAIA. The reigning SSC Golfer of the Year is also in line to become the second player in program history to win the Division II Golfstat Cup (Maha Haddioui in 2008) after boasting a program-best 73.38 stroke average, three tournament victories and 11 top-10 finishes in total. Not far off her pace is fellow junior Samantha Smolen, who ranks No. 2 in the country with a 73.62 stroke average, two tournament wins and nine top-10 finishes. Both Bradley and Smolen have tied for the school record for career top-10 finishes with 23 apiece. Lynn’s depth continues with junior Louise Manalo being No. 8 and seniors Ellen Chambers and Irene Calvo earning No. 24 and 31 national rankings. Chambers set the school record for 72-hole scoring last year in the national championship where she finished fourth individually while Manalo was close behind earning sixth and Calvo tied for fourth in the Super Regional Tournament. The Sunshine State Conference showed its depth as six schools and one individual qualified for super regional play. Behind Lynn are Rollins, Barry, Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern, Flagler, West Florida, Armstrong and Saint Leo. Emily Rymer of Florida Southern qualified as an individual. The SSC has won all 14 NCAA Division II National Championships and 15 in total as between 1996-99 Divisions II and III competed in a combined championship. Additionally, the SSC has also provided the runner-up 11 times. Rollins leads with five NCAA titles, followed by Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern with four apiece and Lynn with two.
