A Mother’s Day Inspiration By Quezia Salgado

The month of May, not unlike the other months of the year, is marked by memorable dates of festivities and celebrations, with Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, and of course Mother’s Day. While for most people, Mother’s Day is one filled with joy and gratitude where children display their love and affection for the women who brought them into the world, for some it’s a day they’d rather not remember, because it’s a synonym of loss and sadness. Despite the controversy of feelings this day provokes, mostly everyone on Earth can relate to it somehow. But Mother’s Day is much more than just a day set aside to celebrate mothers and their love for their children; it’s an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a caregiver, a nurturer, and on the unnoticed sacrifices they make along the way. As mothers grow older and, depending on their health condition, some children opt for placing them in nursing homes, where they often feel unloved and abandoned. Continues on page 3

A Mother’s Day Inspiration Continue from page 1

There are, however, those mothers whose children still care and provide for them even from far away. That is the case of Irene Liberman, an 87 year old, who receives home care assistance through Aurora Nurses of South Florida, all covered by her two children Howard and Phyllis and their spouses, who live in New Jersey. Irene grew up in Sharon, Massachusetts, and raised two children Howard and Phyllis, with her now deceased husband Milton. As a dedicated mother, Irene was a stay-at-home mom for most of her children’s early years. When the time came to go back to work, she opted for a job as the cafeteria cook for Sharon Junior High, mainly for the convenience of being able to be home when her kids arrived from school, and also for getting the summers off to spend time with her family, “It wasn’t good for the money, but it was good for the schedule” she says. As the children grew older and started their own families, Irene and Milton made the move to Florida, which has been home for over 13 years. A woman of graceful attitude and calm demeanor, Irene remembers her husband with the deepest love, “We had a good relationship; we were married for over 63 years”, and her aide Carmela Quammie is a witness to what made their relationship so great, “Irene never fought with her husband; she always let him take the lead. She’s an example to the younger generation of women, of how they should carry themselves.” Back in 2000, after going

through cardiac surgery, Irene started therapy sessions, which her husband would drive her to. Years later, after discovering he had a minor stroke, doctors told Milton he would not be able to drive any longer. Consequently, Irene was compelled to suspend her therapy sessions, but she did not give up. Instead she set up her own therapy exercises using the treadmill and bike at the gym in her complex, proving once again her strength and endurance. Due to Milton’s health condition, their daughter Phyllis arranged it so they could receive assistance from a professional, who would also drive for them. That’s when Carmela came along and they hit it off, or as Irene cheerfully remembers, “He hit it off with Carmela just beautifully.” The chemistry between them was evident, and Irene affirms it never bothered her that her husband would sometimes ask for Carmela’s rather than her help, and Carmela attributes that to Irene’s confidence, “She is so secure in who she is as a woman that my assistance didn’t bother her; I did for both of them equally, and that shows their beauty as a couple.” Although Carmela came on to work for the couple mainly because of Milton, she has stayed on to assist Irene who suffers from macular degeneration. Carmela, who is married and has a family of her own, spends six days of the week with Irene, assisting her with everything from driving her to appointments, to preparing meals and cleaning the house, “I don’t see this as a job; I do for her what I would do if it were my mother.” Despite the gradual loss of her vision, Irene remains very active and occupies her time with several classes such as Tai Chi, Independent Living Skills and even a computer typing class at Florida Outreach Center for the Blind twice a week. Additionally, Irene keeps busy with hobbies such as knitting, crocheting, and baking. Executive Director of the center, Carolyn Lapp, expresses how much Irene’s example means to her, “She’s an inspiration to all of us here; despite the loss of her husband and going through vision loss, she won’t give up but keeps going strong.” After her husband’s passing Irene’s children urged her to move back up North so she could be close to them and receive the care she needed, but she told them, “I don’t want to make any rash decisions.” After careful thought she decided to stay in Florida and continue with the comfortable life style she enjoys here. Although they live out of town, her children call and check on her everyday and make sure all her needs are met. Irene will be spending this Mother’s Day with her sister and family, and will certainly be showered with the love and gratitude that remain constant, not just from her children, but from all who know and admire this perseverant woman – a true example of a mother, who defies the odds everyday and continues to celebrate life.

Boca High Schools in State, National Rankings

By Fred Hamilton

Boca Raton High School ranks among the best high schools in Florida and is among two considered the most challenging high schools in the country, according to the U.S. News & World and Washington Post’s annual list of high-performing schools. Boca High is ranked at 33rd in the state’s and 603 in the country’s best schools in the publication’s Best High Schools 2014 edition, released this week. The Washington Post listed Boca High as the seventh most challenging school in the state and no. 22 in the country. Spanish River High was ranked 65th in the

state and 370th in the country. Two other Palm Beach County Schools were ranked among the best. Dreyfoos School of the Arts was ranked fifth in the sate and 46th in the country, and Suncoast High School received a state ranking of no.8 and no. 72 on the national ranking. Among the state’s most challenging schools, Olympic Heights ranked No. 144 statewide and No. 1079 nationally; West Boca High School was ranked at no. 204 in the state and no. 1779 nationally. The analysts looked at more than 31,200 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and ranked them using three steps. Dallas-based School for the Talented and Gifted was ranked best public high school in the country for the third year in a row. “The first two steps looked at overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students,” said the editors of the issue. “We then used participation in and performance on [Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate] exams to evaluate how well schools prepared students for college-level course work.”

The Boca Raton Tribune held its monthly networking event this passed Tuesday, at Estia Greek Taverna & Bar, where many local business owners and leaders were able to mingle and exchange information and ideas. It was definitely a successful event and everyone had a wonderful time enjoying the delectable Greek specialties until way past 9pm. The restaurant’s owner Nicholas said: “I am very happy; it was great to have everyone here.” The purpose of these events is to get local businesses together in one place where relationships can be built, “This is another way the local newspaper helps the community; we put people

together to network and do good things for the city,” said CEO Douglas Heizer. Business Choice accountant Francisco Pessoa was very pleased to attend, “It was great to be here with people from the city; we were able to talk not only about business, but also get to know each other on a more personal level.” Also present was Craig Rubinstein of Katzman Wasserman Bennardini & Rubinstein Attorneys, who attended the event for the first time, “This was a well done event with a good cross section of businesses represented; I plan on attending the next time.” Henry Ferguson of HRFerguson Financial Consultants also expressed his satisfaction with the event, “This was probably one of the best networking events I’ve attended in a long time; I met a lot of great people and the location and hors devours were delicious.” The next get together will take place on May 27th, and because of the great turnout with almost 60 people, there will be limited seating. EDITORIAL By C. Ron Allen

It Could Easily Happen to You Too I checked in with my business partner much, much later than usual the other day. When we finally connected, she said, “I was giving you one more hour before I called police.” I thought she was joking; she was dead serious. I apologized and told her I had been on the phone with a client for a few hours. I found her anxiety a little strange. But then I thought about the case we were working. I got it. For the past six weeks, my team has been investigating the case of Wellington black businessman Marvin Williams, serving three years in Sumter Correctional Institution for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. What happened to Mr. Marvin Williams could have happened to any black man in America. My professional brothers look out! Marvin was one of us, clean record and all, and he still got arrested and convicted with overwhelming evidence that should have freed him. It goes to show that gun laws can be twisted at will, especially in places like Central Florida. The way I see it, Mr. Williams was convicted before he even had the trial. He was a black man, who owned and traveled with a gun. He even had a permit. A white man, an enraged driver, accused him of pointing a gun at him on Florida’s turnpike. He’d even called Florida Highway Patrol unbeknownst to

Mr. Williams. The driver tailed Mr. Williams as if he were “Five-O” for miles on the turnpike. Mr. Williams had even flashed a highway patrolman traveling southbound to get his attention. Mr. Williams finally pulled off an exit ramp and stopped, on his own accord. He wanted to see if the other driver was still following him. Florida Highway Patrol arrived in seconds. Mr. Williams did have a gun. But it didn’t fit the accuser’s initial description and it would have been hard for him to pull it out of the glove compartment, traveling at a high rate of speed on the turnpike, turn around while driving and point it at the accuser to his left. He also was left handed. There were no other witnesses. But facts like these don’t matter when you are up against overzealous whites in Central Florida. Plain and simple- you lose. The region is getting a lot of publicity because of how it handles criminal cases involving African Americans. Mr. Williams is the norm, not the exception. My company, CRA Media Group, took on the case because as a black man I could see myself as Mr. Williams. We are not attorneys but crisis managers and public relations strategists. We have spent weeks poring over documents and depositions to see how Mr. Williams could have been convicted. It just doesn’t add up. The evidence — the gun — was mishandled,

shown to the accuser at the scene, in fact, and the prosecutor, who stated in a 2008 article in the Orlando Sentinel, “Lake County Prosecutor Admit: Sometimes Trial Witnesses are Less Than Saints,” acknowledges that the state often relies on testimony of convicted criminals to make their cases. She did just that in this case. So, it wasn’t against her nature to keep the accuser’s criminal background, which included drug possession charges and impersonating a police officer, out of court. Not too many things frighten me, but I can say that my anxiety grows every time I drive through Central Florida. I may just do or say the wrong thing in the wrong place. As I rode through the region last week to attend a rally in front of the courthouse where Mr. Williams was tried and convicted, I felt uneasy. An eerie feeling cloaked downtown Tavares that Saturday afternoon. It was interesting to hear from a white woman whose husband was in the county lockup for 20 days without a bond hearing – for allegedly stealing comic books from a man who was charged with breaking into her home and stealing her son’s fishing tackle and poles. She said her family had never met the man who stole their son’s fishing gear and that he had gotten their address from the arrest report and filed the

www.bocaratontribune.com

report in retaliation. If that bears true, one has to question the type of legal and justice system they have in that region. It gave me chills when I say the large poplar tree outside the office of the attorney who represented Mr. Williams. Yes, I’m the guy who points out wrong doings no matter who the culprit is, including law enforcement officers. I’m often told my mouth will get me in trouble one day. In Mr. Williams’ case, it was the prevailing thought that blacks carry weapons to harm, which did him in. The fact that the accuser thought he saw a black man with a gun and that Mr. Williams actually had a gun in his glove box was too much of a coincidence for the prosecutor and the jury. But a good attorney would have been able to counter with evidence and probability. And, Mr. Williams, falling under the misguided belief of many educated and professional blacks, myself included, relied on logic and the rules of a legal system which often does not consider the true rights of blacks in this country. Mr. Williams’ “What the hell?” moment should resonate across the country to all of us black men, who believe we are immune to derisiveness because we have achieved. Contact C. THOUGHTS FROM THE PUBLISHER By Douglas Heizer

What I Learned From My Mother About God I wrote this column three yeras ago to celebrate Mother’s Day and ever since I’ve decided that on every Mother’s Day edition of The Boca Raton Tribune I would run it again. So, keeping it with tradition, here’s my Mother’s Day column.

Several things we learn from our mothers. Truthfully, thanks to them, we walk our first steps in life. They worry about us and treat us with kindness, even after we are adults. I was able to learn a lot about God from my mother. In fact, she gave me more practical lessons than theology. As a matter of fact, I could say 99% practical and 1% theological. I learned from her, everyday of our lives, while she raised my sister and me with difficulties. Thank God, I must be very honest that the lessons have not ended yet. My mother continues to teach me with her love, about God, every single day. GOD IS LOVE: It was the first lesson I learned from my mother. I learned that there was someone who loved me more than she did (and that is something very hard for mothers to believe, the daughters’ in law can tell that). Someone who wished and planned my birth more than she and my father did. Someone who already had a purpose for my life, even before she thought I could exist. He always wants the best for me, treats me with the kindness only possible to God. In the hardest moments of our lives, my mother never lost her belief that God loves us.

GOD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH ME: He will never leave me on my own. My mother taught me that too. Every morning, when I woke up to go to school, or better, when she woke me up to go to school, she taught me to be sure that God would be with me each moment of my day. He would be with me going down the stairs, crossing the street, getting together with my friends at school (and also with the ones that were not so close). Even after she separated from my father, when I was 11 years old, she guaranteed me that God would always be with us that He would not leave us on our own. Many and many struggles! But my mother was always certain that God was in charge. I then learned that God would be with me my entire life. If I was in any kind of difficulty, whatever it would be, I could be tranquil because He would never leave me by myself, he would show me the best path and teach me. GOOD LISTENS TO ME: God is always ready to listen to me. As a matter of fact, He really wants to listen to me. Although I know that He is able to do all, He wants to hear from my mouth what I need, He wants to know that I trust Him, He wants to know what worries me, what I plan for the future. How many hours, my mother, my sister and myself spent talking to God! Honestly I don’t remember of one single night that we would not speak to God. Our conversation was very frank, with

an open heart and I learned that God listened to us for sure! That is why I am certain that He is always ready to listen to me. And I do not miss the opportunity. GOD SPEAKS WITH ME: I also learned that God speaks with me, always. I don’t need to wait for something marvelous or pyrotechnical. He speaks through simple ways, not only complicated ways. One thing is for sure, he always speaks to me. I just need to keep alert to listen to what he tells me. I saw my mother making decisions because she listened to God, I saw that He really had spoken to her. I learned then to listen to God! What a wonderful thing ! Several times He spoke to me through the weirdest and different ways; through a boy on the street looking for a place to stay, through a comment that I heard on the line at the bank, in other instances through a very humble person making a comment that I would never imagined to hear. Incredible the ways God spoke to me! Shame that a lot of people wait for something supernatural in order to hear God and forget that our everyday lives are more than supernatural, and God uses all of it. God speaks through pain and unpleasant situations, that a lot of times, because we are a stubborn son, we do not listen to him before making decisions. If I learn to listen to him, He is ready to teach me and guide me every day. Do you think I want anything different? GOD IS FAIR AND TAKES CARE OF ME:

My mother taught me that God is fair. I should trust to him the justice. But also, by Him, wait to be judged. I learned that He sees my heart and not what I say or do. I learned that he will always judge me every day and that‘s why I must seek to follow his commandments. I learned that nobody escapes from God’s justice. I should not worry if I am injusticed, slandered, offended, my God will come to my defense; the battle is the Lord’s. He will guard me each day of my life. GOD HAS A PLAN: Because he loves me, He has only one plan for me! Therefore he gave me a digital that is just mine, a DNA, only mine, He made me unique! He drew me a plan that only I can achieve. Now it leaves me to be certain of that plan. In order to do that, I must talk to him, trust His justice and be ready to listen to Him! I can be sure that He will never abandon me and no matter what happens, He will not give up the plan He has for me. And most importantly, GOD IS FAITHFUL and I can truly count on His promises. I thank Him for the mother He gave me, for His loyalty, for the plan He has for my life, He chose her, knowing that she would have a very difficult boy to raise! After all, that is part of His plan for her life! To all mothers, and especially to my Mom Elza, have a Happy Mother’s Day!

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Aiming at Mutual Encouragement! Not too many people realize the power of little gestures in making a positive and lasting impression in other persons’ lives. I’m glad that I am perhaps among a minority who take this matter more seriously, simply because I am a perpetual student of human nature, remain observant of people’s attitudes, and delight myself in the outcome of small gestures of kindness! To begin with, I attempt never to allow my personal distresses to influence my demeanor toward those I am interacting with at any given time. More than likely, others that I’m approaching are also faced with unpleasant situations and, thus, don’t need anything additional that

would unnecessarily add to their plight! Recently I was going through the pages of a book I had read in the recent past, just to recheck whatever I had underlined as thoughts and ideas I wanted to save. I came across a phrase someone had addressed to a friend, which greatly touched me again, as it had when I first read it. The message, from a friend to another, simply stated: “Your good nature puts a smile on my face which can’t be erased.” This was a further reminder to me that a person’s positive projection toward others, whether dealing directly with them or not, achieves far more than one can ever imagine.

The world needs more people builders than “thieves of joy” (to borrow an expression from an author friend of mine). And just like any edifice is erected one brick at a time, the life of any person is also elevated through a series of small encouragements, meaningful facts, and positive words and ideas. Persons who treat others with the dignity to which they are entitled, no matter how lowly the social status, economic or educational level may be, will always receive something of far greater value in return, which immeasurably enriches their life in an indelible fashion! Usually a friendly smile will be responded to with another smile, a kind word

may prompt a positive response from one or more who heard it, a pleasant disposition in public may elicit an equal reaction of those who observed it. There may be occasions when one may need to go out of his/her way to impact another life through a specific action. Most of the time, however, it’s more the personal attitudes of people toward one another that achieve wellbeing and good-will. Consider being a “tear catcher,” a spreader of joy, a more cheerful agent of what the world needs now and always, namely, “love, sweet love”!

BocaLocals Announce Winners of IT Career Fair Planned for May 15 Monthlong Competition BocaLocals announces the winner of their new annual competition focused on finding the “best balls” in and around the Boca Raton. This month long competition was extraordinary in that all 16 participating restaurants were visited by a small panel of judges - in search for traditional and unique meatballs. The winning restaurant is Twenty-Twenty Grille located at 141 Via Naranjas, Boca Raton, FL 33432. This newly emerged restaurant is co-owned by a husband and wife team. The restaurant will be awarded with a plaque to hang on their wall for bragging rights and an event sponsored by BocaLocals inviting the public for an opportunity to taste the BEST meatball in Boca. The date set for this event is Tuesday, April 22, 2014 6:00-8:00pm, $20 prepay online at BocaLocals.com. Tied for second place is Trattoria Romana and 13 American Table, both in Boca Raton, while Paradiso Italian Restaurant of Lake Worth took third place. Restaurants were asked to think out-of-thebox and all stepped up to the plate! Segreto Restaurant served up a tasty Meatball Caprese appetizer layered with 100% beef meatball, mozzarella and tomato on cros-

tini. Terra Fiamma dished out 100% veal meatballs in succulent marsala mushroom sauce, one of only four meatballs listed on their menu. 13 American Table issued a savory “beefsteak” meatball: one half pork - one half veal, well presented on a spill of bleu cheese fondue and red wine sauce. Henry’s produced a superior rendition on the lamb meatball. A four step process to create! Trattoria Romana amazed the judges with the “Polpettone” meatball [aka: large meatball] 100% beef with an interior arranged in a true Italian-American manner containing: prosciutto, mushrooms, red pepper, onions and mozzarella. “The competition was fierce and the overall scoring was extremely close,” says Shana Overhulser, “I was thrilled to have such wonderful restaurant participation in our first annual BocaLocals meatball competition and looking forward to March 2015.” This was a way for the all restaurateurs to strut their stuff as the food critics, food bloggers and journalists visited each venue and experienced not only unbelievably tasty dishes but the service, atmosphere and intimate introductions to GMs, staff and illustrious chefs. The judging criteria was: taste, texture, presentation and originality.

Boca Middle Holds Earth Day Fundraiser By Bito David

After seeing the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control study results, Susan Oyer and her 7th grade Civics students at Boca Raton Community Middle School were prompted to act. Her students have embraced their civic responsibilities throughout the year with multiple letter-writing campaigns, so working to reduce global warming was the logical next step to put Civics into action. “Civics in action is the best way to learn Civics,” Oyer said. “The concepts are often difficult for students at this age to understand, but they do understand that their efforts, as well as their money, can make a difference in the world. And living in South Florida, students understand how fragile the environment is—planting trees improves the world’s air quality and hopefully will help reduce the temperature fluctuations that are causing the seas to rise which will impact all of us here in Palm Beach County in the decades to come.”

Boca Man, 95, Who was Run Over By Century Village Bus, Dies By Jason Schwartz

The 95-year-old man, who was run over by a bus in December in Century Village, has died, authorities said. Herman Lipson died Feb. 15 from complications from his injuries in the Dec. 30 crash, the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office said. He is the 19th fatality investigated by the Sheriff ’s Office this year. Lipson and Arlene Shapiro, 79, both of Boca Raton, were walking near a pool along a one-way road in Century Village, east of Lyons Road and south of Yamato Road, when Shapiro heard a bus coming,

The Canopy Project is part of the Earth Day network and is working to repopulate large cities around the US and the world with more trees. Through the Project, trees are also planted to improve impoverished urban areas that have experienced land degradation such as Haiti or to provide a base for economic growth as in parts of Africa. Here is their website: http://www.earthday. org/campaign/canopy-project . Oyer’s classes are selling two different green wristbands through May 1. One wristband is lime green, costs $2, buys 1 ½ trees and says “Just Tree It”. The other glows in the dark green, is $3, buys 2 ½ trees, and says “Grow Green”. Most students are buying one of each—their $5 donation is buying 4 trees for The Canopy Project. To date, Boca Middle students and families have donated over $600. Both were taken to Delray Medical Center. The driver of the bus, Auguste Millien, of Delray Beach, 66, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash, investigators said.

According to Barron’s, “The formula [used] to rank advisors has three major components: assets managed, revenue produced and quality of the advisor’s practice. Investment returns are not a component of the rankings because an advisor’s returns are dictated largely by each client’s risk tolerance. The quality-of-practice component includes an evaluation of each advisor’s regulatory record.”The rankings are based on the universe of applications submitted to Barron’s. Explosion at Suspected Grow House Rattles West Boca Community By Jason Schwartz

Authorities are investigating what caused an explosion at a suspected marijuana growing operation in the Sandalfoot community, west of Boca Raton earlier this week. No one was injured in the blast at the cream and pink stucco and barrel-tile roofed home at 22195 SW 62nd Ave. Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control removed a pit bull mastiff that was found uninjured inside the home. The front window of the home was blown out, but no one was inside when deputies first arrived on scene, except for the dog, officials said. “It sounded like something hit the house,” said Dan McGuire, a neighbor who was awakened by a loud noise just after 5 a.m. “That was an explosion.” McGuire said he then checked on his three teens. When he looked outside, he noticed his neighbor’s front window was blown out. “I knew something was wrong,” McGuire said. So he called 911. The Sheriff ’s Office evacuated several homes in the neighborhood as a precaution until firefighters determined there weren’t any hazardous materials inside the home. Neighbors said a young couple moved in about six months ago. They rarely saw the man and woman who kept to themselves and worked nights. At least one neighbor also said he saw the man who lives there running from the home shortly after the blast.

New Jersey Grand Jury Indicts Boca Man in Death of His Son By CRA News Service

Nearly a year after his arrest, a Boca Raton man and former New Jersey firefighter has been charged with manslaughter for the death of his 10-week-old son two years ago. A grand jury, sitting in Hackensack, returned a five-count indictment Friday against Michael Marrara, Jr. Marrara, 33, caused a significant brain injury, broke three of the child’s ribs and left various bruises on him during his short life, authorities said. Andrew Marrara died March 26, 2012. Marrara was first charged last June but charges have since been upgraded from assault to first-degree aggravated manslaughter, according to the Bergen Record. Prosecutors have never detailed the circumstances of the death other than to allege that Marrara inflicted a fatal brain injury while alone with the baby at their Fort Lee home. Marrara also allegedly broke three of the infant’s ribs and caused various bruises in the weeks prior to the death, authorities said. Marrara was a volunteer firefighter in Fort Lee before moving to Boca Raton following his son’s death and has earned a living as an electrician since, according to his Facebook profile. The indictment charged Marrara with aggravated assault for the injuries the boy sustained during the month before his death, two counts of child endangerment, and hindering his own apprehension by giving false information to a law enforcement officer on the day after the death. The infant was not breathing when emergency personnel responded to a Center Avenue home where Marrara and his fiancée, Lindsey Whitman, lived at the time, authorities said. The baby was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where, despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead about an hour later. An autopsy determined Andrew had suffered older injuries and that the manner of death was a homicide caused by injury to the infant, authorities have said. John Bruno, an attorney representing Marrara, has said the family initially thought that the baby died of sudden infant death syndrome — a condition responsible for thousands of deaths every year nationwide. But, John Latoracca, another attorney representing Marrara, said Friday a medical expert retained by the defense determined the baby had a condition that caused blood clots in the brain. “No one is responsible, this was not a homicide,” Latoracca said. He said the older rib fractures could have occurred during child birth.

Burglars Busted The caller, a neighbor, reported seeing a black vehicle drop off a male at this location. As the suspect walked to the rear of the home through a gate, the vehicle left the area. Officers checked the home and found that a rear slider was open. As officers waited for the K-9 team to respond, the suspect opened the front door and saw an officer then retreated into the home. The suspect, identified as Roderick Kendricks, then left the home through the open rear slider and was taken into custody. When officers checked the home they discovered the rear slider was pried open. The caller identified Kendricks as the male he saw enter the backyard. When officers

searched Kendricks, they found a Canon camera and several blank checks in his pocket, both belonging to the homeowner. Kendricks told officers how he committed the crime. Officers checking the area for the suspect’s car located it at 600 West Camino Real. The driver of the vehicle, Vincent Johnson, had a suspended driver’s license and was identified by the witness as the driver of the suspect car, which the witness also identified. Officers arrested Johnson. Officers charged Kendricks and Johnson with burglary, grand theft, and criminal mischief.

Officers Quick Response Leads to Robber’s Arrest The victim, Filiberto Cruz, told officers he was in the plaza looking for gainful employment when he was approached by a male asking for money. Cruz said the suspect, later identified as Sylister Jones, brandished a box cutter type knife and motioned to him to come closer. Cruz ran to a nearby restaurant without giving Jones any money.

Detectives located Jones behind Rotelli’s Restaurant. Jones told officers he walked to the Tri-Rail from school and needed money for the train. Jones changed his version of story several times. Cruz identified Jones as the suspect who tried to rob him. Officers arrested Jones and charged him with attempted robbery.

With more than 25 years of healthcare experience, Elizabeth Iciano joins Delray Medical Center as assistant director of surgical services. In her new role, Iciano is responsible for the management of the surgical services department’s daily operations and coordination of patient care. She also assists with budget preparation, promotes customer satisfaction and ensures that the staff meets regulatory agency standards. “I am very excited to be here,” said Iciano, who began in March. “It’s a nice place, warm people and I’m liking it a lot.” Iciano said she accepted the job because the hospital is striving to improve environmental health and sustainability in key areas such as engaged leadership, leaner energy, less waste, safer chemicals and smarter purchasing. “When I did my master’s in business, I learned about [the importance of] being lean and environmentally friendly,” she said. “I think Delray has all these things happening and I like that.” The hospital is equipped with advanced surgical technologies and an experienced surgical staff. It also has the capabilities to perform surgeries in more than 35 specialties and subspecialties, including minimally invasive procedures that may result in fewer complications, faster recovery time and overall less risk for the patient. Prior to joining Delray Medical Center, Iciano served as the service line clinician for orthopedic surgery at St. Francis Hospital Roslyn in New York. Her responsibilities included facilitating the flow of patients to and from the surgical suites, assisting in scrubbing and circulating and coordinating the availability of supplies and equipment. Iciano received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1987 from Saint Louis University in Baguio City, Philippines. In 2013, she earned her Master of Business Administration at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. In her spare time, Iciano enjoys reading and knitting. “Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in the healthcare field,” CEO Mark Bryan said. “Her diverse background will bring a unique skill set to Delray Medical Center and make her an invaluable asset to the leadership team and surgical services department.” Staff Writer Fred Hamilton contributed to this report.

Police, Victim’s Friends Search for hit and run Driver By Jason Schwartz

Friends of a Boynton Beach woman who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while she was rollerblading are continuing their search around town for the suspect. Delray Beach police are also looking for the driver of the late-model lime green Mustang convertible that struck Natalie Bucala on April 28. Bucala, 20, was skating with six of her friends on East Atlantic Avenue when they stopped on the Intracoastal Waterway bridge to take a break. Bucala was standing in the street when the driver in the convertible hit her. “This guy flew out of nowhere, there was no chance anyone had a chance to see, hear or

do anything,” said Nick Swab, who witnessed the incident. “He looked at Kristian and Natalie and said she shouldn’t have been in the road and floored it.” Police rushed to the scene, but the driver had already taken off. “If I was just there by myself, I would be dead,” said Bucala, who is recovering at Delray Medical Center.” Her teeth are shattered, her pelvis is sprained and her face will likely be marked by a scar for life Police sent out a picture of a lime-green Mustang, similar to the one they are looking for. Imagine if it was your sister, your family member, I mean have a heart,” Bucala said.

Fun, Fitness, Flexibility: Zumba’s Got it All and More By Fred Hamilton

South Palm Beach County residents looking for a fun way to get into shape should consider taking Zumba classes being offered at the Carolyn Sims Center at Wilson Park in Boynton Beach, the Achievement Centers for Children & Families and Village Academy in Delray Beach. Through a series of jumps, shakes, kicks and claps during the Latin Americaninspired fitness classes, participants can increase their heart rates and have fun. “Our goal is to get people healthy and moving by working out,” said Rosa White, one of the instructors with the “Zumba with Angela T.” class offered Tuesdays at Carolyn Sims Center from 7 to 8 p.m. Though Zumba classes can be found on the group fitness schedules of many gyms throughout the country, it is most often assumed to be a workout routine for adult females. But the fitness program’s reach extends to a range of age groups and abilities. “We have people from 16 [years old] and up to their ’60s,” White said. She said they have tried unsuccessfully to appeal to men. “We have guys who came and we showed them a version but men don’t like moving their hips,” she said. At a recent community event at the Libby Wesley Amphitheatre in Delray Beach, participants received free fitness and nutritional education, health and skin care tips as well

as medical information. Another class, SkyeHigh Fitness, also is a Latin-inspired cardio-dance workout that uses music and choreographed steps to form a fitness party atmosphere. The program is in its fourth year and is offered on Mondays and Thursdays at Village Academy from 7 to 8 pm. and on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Achievement Centers. While many of the types of dance and music featured in the program are Latin American inspired, classes can also contain everything from jazz to African beats to country to hip-hop and pop. Since its inception in the mid-1990s by creator Alberto “Beto” Perez, the Zumba program reaches 10 million people in more than 90,000 locations across more than 110 countries. Over the years the cardio-centric Zumba classes have grown to also include specific programming for children (Zumbatomic) and seniors (Zumba Gold), along with classes in the water (Aqua Zumba), resistance training classes (Zumba Toning) and circuit classes (Zumba in the Circuit). “The music is lively, the exercises are fun and the instructor is very animated,” said Andrea Bruton, the founder of SkyeHigh Fitness. “That combination offers great motivation to participants. Losing weight, toning muscles and getting into summer shape can be tedious and boring, but getting into Zumba makes it less like work, and more like fun.”

Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour Comes to Sunrise

By Skip Sheffield

Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun for you non-French speakers) has come a long way since its formation by two former street performers in Quebec, Canada in 1984. It is an international sensation with more than 30 elaborate productions that have toured worldwide. The latest to our area, “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour” has a limited run Friday and Saturday May 23 and 14 at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Like “Love,” which blended The Beatles Music catalog and fantastic staging with incredible and graceful feats of human dexterity and balance, “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour,” which is already one of the top 10-grossing music tours of all time, plays tribute to the late singer-songwriter and his timeless musical contributions to the world. “Michael Jackson” varies from the usual Cirque du Soleil fantasy in that it is staged as a rock concert with a cast of 49 dancers, musicians and acrobats. The underlying message is

Boca Life & Arts

Michael Jackson’s commitment to love, world peace and unity. The band features some of the very musicians who worked with the late Jackson, who died prematurely at age 50 in 2009. The death was attributed to a prescription drug overdose. Jackson, the eighth of 10 children born to a poor Gary, Indiana family, shot to stardom at age 10 as the pint-sized lead singer of the brothers act The Jackson 5. Jackson’s music on the other hand will never die. After all, his 1982 album “Thriller” is the best-selling recording of all time. The show incorporates video of Jackson performing and costumed performers representing his various looks and dance moves. In all there are 32 Jackson songs in part or whole, recorded and played live by an onstage band. Tickets range in price from $50 to $125. Author Reveals An Answered Prayer And A Beautiful Love Story

By Phydias Barbosa

I knew, at a glance, that The Prayer was written by a catholic woman full of hope and faith. And I got an immediate connection with the powerful real plot she had at hand. The minute I started reading it, I couldn’t stop. I started Friday evening and by Monday morning I’ve had it. It was so breathtaking I decided to ask permission to the publisher of The Boca Raton Tribune to contact Mrs. Von Zhwel for an interview. We met at The Floridian on Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, one of her favorite places. Lucky her, only 5 minutes from her

home. Perfect! She told me she has been interviewed by priests and pastors of all faiths and the one thing in common they all agree is: They all pray, no matter one’s religion or faith might be. Jackie , then, proposed many questions which falls directly to the hearts of those who are compassionate and pray. “But, when you pray, do you pray for yourself ? You think only about me, me, me? Or… do you think about somebody else when you pray? Do you pray for somebody else first?” Do you think about other human being when you pray? “You must pray genuinely, genuinely, with your heart, thinking about another human being first”, she adds. Jacqueline also said: “Religious leaders, rabbis, priests, what do they do all day long? They pray for their people, to the others. So, we should take that message and use that in ourselves”. “Real prayers help to resolve family conflicts, financial matters, illnesses, if we get busy taking care of others, God will take care of our needs”. She has a list of the people she prays for and some of their needs, so before she goes to bed she goes over the list and says: “God, please take care of them. Whatever their needs are, health, love, please God take care of them and their needs. I think about their names for a couple of minutes…” “In order to be taken care of, you need to take care of somebody else. Can you imagine if every person in the World had a prayer list? How powerful this could be?” Rush for your copy of the book. Besides, it’s a wonderful love story.

Spidey’s Got Soul

Spider-Man is no run-of-the-mill super hero. Spidey’s got heart and soul as portrayed by Andrew Garfield. This is Garfield’s second time around as the Spandex-suited good guy in the unimaginatively-titled “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” This is also the second time around for director Marc Webb, who directed the first “Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012 and was responsible for one of my favorite movies of 2009: “(500) Days of Summer.” It was that film that proved Webb’s grasp of the fleeting, elusive nature of romantic love. This sequel to the 2012 re-launch returns Garfield to the dual role of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man and Emma Stone as his girl friend Gwen Stacy. The star-crossed lovers are graduating from Mid Town Science High School and planning for college. It is that graduation that starts the story off with a shot. Brainy Stacy is school Valedictorian and is scheduled the deliver the keynote address. Peter is busy saving New York City from various catastrophes and is running late for his own graduation. “Spidey 2” is surprisingly funny and jammed with CG special effects, but its heart is the relationship between Peter and Stacy. The chemistry between Garfield and Stone is palpable. It comes as no surprise they are a couple in real life. Denis Leary returns as Stacy’s disapproving cop dad, Capt. Stacy, and it is he who provides the initial conflict in their storybook love affair. Peter’s mom (Sally Field) is still mourning the death of her husband, Peter’s Uncle

Ben (Martin Sheen), who was killed off in the first film. Peter is still trying to solve the sudden disappearance of his parents when he was 10. It is linked somehow to the leviathan Oscorp, whose co-founder Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) is dying of a fatal genetic disease. The mantle is passed to Osborn’s son Harry (Dane DeHaan) who was a childhood of Peter’s before being shipped off to private school. Harry becomes the new head of Oscorp at age 20, but the real power behind the throne is wielded by board president Donald Menken (Colm Feore), who has dark intentions for the company’s future. “Spidey 2” was filmed completely in New York, and it makes wonderful use of real and imaginary locations in New York City. Set pieces include real vintage subway tokens, an abandoned subway station and imagined skullduggery on Roosevelt Island. Jamie Foxx is great fun as nerdy electrical engineer Max Dillon, who after and accident that lands him in a pool of electric eels, morphs into the hulking, enraged Electro, who has a particular grudge against Spidey. Sally Field’s part is not large, but she makes the most of it with a heartfelt pep talk to Peter that centers on hope. Hope is what Spider-Man gives to people. He may be imaginary but the message can’t be bad.

The Best Workout Why are there so many different types of workouts? Why do I see well muscled men and very thin women doing these new workouts? Did they use them for years before allowing the rest of the world to see them? Do they work so fast that as soon as you start doing them you too will look like them? Or do they have good genetics, did they do some other workout for years to get into shape and then audition for the video. (Probably). So do not feel hopeless if you cannot keep up or have not gotten the results you were sure you would get. Just keep at it, at your own pace. The best workout is the one you will continue to do week after week and for weight loss, add in a method of eating that you can follow along with it. The body burns about 100 calories per mile in a marathon. So if you run six miles an

hour you burn 600 calories. That’s a workout! A large fancy coffee (600 calories), the next morning can ruin that run. That is the eating method that ruins it. Maybe you have no time constraints so spending hours from start to finish per workout is ok. Sweating like crazy and then taking a shower and getting dressed again is not a problem. Maybe you have kids and a job and you have no time at all, so doing a DVD before work or late at night is all you have time for. Maybe you cannot maintain the pace of the classes that are available to you, so you just walk or take the stairs or play with your children or maybe grandchildren. If that is what you have time for, then that is perfect for you. Whatever you do, all that matters is that you keep doing something.

Prioritizing Mom How is your relationship with your mother? That question has become so fraught with psychological implications that it has turned into something of a cultural pun. But I want you to step back and consider the question at its most basic level. When it comes to investing in your relationship with your mom – to spending time with her and growing the natural bond that exists between you, to loving her for who she is and for all the ways she has poured into your life – how intentional are you? Do you make your relationship with your mother a priority in your life or are you guilty of taking her and your connection with her for granted? In the hours before Jesus’ death, in the very midst of his crucifixion, he prioritized the woman who had brought him into the world. Seeing his mother in anguish at the foot of the cross, Jesus asked one of his disciples to take care of her like a son after he was gone (John 19:26-27). He didn’t just say he loved his mother, he showed it by concerning himself with her needs even as he was laying down his own life. In the same way, no matter what else you may have going on in your world or what strain has worked its way into your relationship with your mother in the past, showing her that you care about her should rank high on your priority list – especially as Mother’s Day approaches. In the Scriptures, the Apostle Paul writes, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for you, I always pray with joy….” (Philippians 1:2-3). Thanking God for your mother and praying for her with joy are two foundational steps for prioritizing

her. But don’t stop there – those are simply precursors to expressing your love through your words and actions. This year, take advantage of the opportunity Mother’s Day gives you to tell your mom how much you love her and how thankful you are for her impact on your life; thank her for the sacrifices she made to raise you well – because whether you’re aware of it or not, she has sacrificed greatly for you. Don’t let another year slip by without letting your mom know just how important she is. This Mother’s Day, Sunday May 11th, I invite you to celebrate with us at The Journey Church. See our ad in this edition for service times and details. If you haven’t had a family picture taken in a while, here is your chance; we’re offering free family portraits for everyone who attends! If your mom lives close by, invite her to join you. If not, make sure to pick up the phone and let her know how much she means to you, not just on Mother’s Day but every day. See you Sunday! Grand Old Opry Q I am the mother of a lovely 12-yearold young woman. Her father and I were never married but lived together for several years, before and after her birth. During our relationship I worked, and still work as a schoolteacher. He never worked. His father however, is a multi-millionaire who has a face and voice which everyone in the world would recognize as a Nashville based country and western recording star. During our relationship, the grandfather refused to recognize my daughter in any way, or have anything to do with her, perhaps because we are of a different race. However, on Christmas of each year, he would give his son a quarter million dollars for support for the next year. If emergencies would arise during the year, more money was available. No money was saved. I was told that no savings were necessary; his dad would always be there. A year ago he abandoned us for a younger woman, married her and another child is on the way. He kicked us out of his house, but rented a house for us, paid support, and kept our daughter in private school and sent her to camp last summer. Now that the school year is over, he says we are on our own. He says that he has no money, no income, no skills and never worked in his life. I have appealed to him and his father, who will not even acknowledge we exist. What are my rights? I can’t even afford a lawyer.

A If you can prove the history of the grandfather’s regular giving through bank records and testify about your knowledge of the lifestyle that you had enjoyed, you are likely to be very successful in obtaining child support, attorney’s fees and, perhaps, extra money for private school and summer camp. Florida case law allows that proof of regular substantial giving, under circumstances where it is very likely to continue, forms a basis for child support under Florida child support guidelines, which include money for extras such as private school and summer camp if usually provided. The gift income can also support an award of attorney’s fees and court costs. Keep in mind, however, that guidelines for child support is somewhat limited in amount. On the $250,000 tax-free gift income you mentioned, adjusted for your income, the guidelines support would be just under $2,000 a month. The school and camps may or may not be found affordable by a court. Health insurance for your daughter and some payment toward non-covered medical expenses might be provided, as well as some life insurance to secure the child support. On the facts you present I’m sure you can find competent counsel to take on your case. Michael H. Hobby Lobby Brings New Jobs to Boca Raton Continues from page 1

“Boca Raton, and its surrounding area, has many vibrant crafting communities that we look forward to serving. We are very pleased to become an integral part of yet another community by providing new jobs, exceptional selection and value in the craft and home decor market, and revitalizing an empty facility, all of which enables us to share in the economic growth of both the state and the community,” stated John Schumacher, Assistant Vice President of Advertising. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK, began as Greco, a miniature picture frames company in 1970. When David Green moved his business from the family’s garage to a 300 square foot retail space in 1972, Hobby Lobby was founded. Today, Hobby Lobby has nearly 600 stores across the nation that average 55,000 square feet in size. This major Oklahoma City-based private corporation offers more than 70,000 crafting and home decor products in its stores in departments including Crafts, Wearable Art, Home Accents, Frames, Jewelry, Hobby, Papercrafting & Scrapbooking, Fabric, Art Supply, Seasonal, Party Supply, Floral and Needle Art. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. All Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sunday.

ADT to Acquire Protectron For $500 million By Leif Kothe

In what will be its largest acquisition as an independent company, Boca Raton based ADT has agreed to acquire Canada-based monitoring giant Protectron in a $500 million deal, giving the company another 400,000 customers north of the border. It adds 31,000 accounts, worth approximately $11 million in RMR. The deal is subject to government and regulatory approvals and is expected to close this summer. Protectron’s customers are 75 percent residential. The company has four central stations and 900 employees. With approximately 80 dealers, Protectron has the largest dealer network in Canada, according to Daniel Demers, Protectron president and CEO. “This is far and away the largest deal ADT will have done since it became an independent company. It dwarfs the Devcon deal,” John Mack, EVP and managing director at Imperial Capital, told Security Systems News. Imperial Capital advised ADT on the deal. Mack said it signals a return for ADT to “growth initiatives [through] high quality acquisitions,” and predicted it “will help ADT’s attrition profile and bolster its enhanced services sales.” The deal gives ADT “more critical mass [that will enable ADT] to do a better job in Canada.” Protectron’s dealer and direct sales organizations bring a “nice growth engine with the ability to grow the subscriber base.” Lee Jackson, regional vice president Canada, characterized the agreement as “the next step in our evolution in Canada.” “We have a longstanding commitment to great customer services that dovetails perfectly with Protectron joining the ADT team,” he said. “[Protectron] has been very successful at growing and retaining their customer base with outstanding service and a great management team and dealer network.” Jackson said ADT plans to create a “standalone business in Canada with a dedicated management team” to address the coun-

try’s unique market needs. Protectron’s Demers is onboard with this vision of recreating a standalone ADT in Canada, something ADT had about a decade ago. “Naren [Gursahaney, ADT CEO] himself said he wants to recreate a standalone organization in Canada [with a separate management team] that will report to the highest level of ADT, that fact means a lot to me,” Demers told SSN. “ADT recognizes that our retention rate [of customers] is impressive, way higher than the standard in the industry. They want to make sure we keep doing that,” Demers said. “And not only is our dealer network the largest in Canada. It’s the most innovative and ADT recognizes that. I’m excited about this deal because it’s a great opportunity for us going forward.” Protectron has four central stations in Canada, while ADT has two (with redundancy built in from the company’s U.S. facilities, Jackson noted). With the agreement in its early stages, Jackson said it was still too early to say whether or not ADT would keep all six Canadian centrals in operation. Jackson also said ADT has yet to determine which resources and administrative functions it will transfer to Canada to support its expanded account base. ADT uses its proprietary product Pulse in the U.S., while Protectron sells both Alarm.com and Honeywell’s Total Connect. Demers reinforced that the acquisition is subject to government approval and “up until this happens, it’s business as usual.” Once the deal is approved “these two great organizations will look at how we go to market and what products and solutions we’ll use,” Demers said, adding that ADT is interested in building on successes that Protectron has had. Jackson said that while the demands of the customer base will dictate which products ADT will offer in Canada, the company as of now has no plans to change its service offerings or those of Protectron. Boca Raton Regional Hospital Receives Vha 2014 Excellence Award For Clinical Care

Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced that the institution is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence Award for Clinical Care from VHA® Inc., the national healthcare network that serves more than 1,350 not-for-profit hospitals. The award recognizes Boca Regional for achieving exceptionally high levels of performance in clinical care when compared to national benchmarks. “We are gratified to be honored by the VHA in such significant fashion,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “It adds to a growing list of national accolades the Hospital has earned for both the effectiveness and the efficiency of care we provide.” To determine the winners of the Clinical Care Award, VHA used cost, length of stay, readmission and clinical outcome data from the Centers for Medicare and

Medicaid Services to determine an integrated performance score for each of its member hospitals. In addition to scoring above the 90th percentile as compared to other VHA members, the hospital must also have participated in a VHA improvement program in 2013. Boca Regional was one of only seven acute care hospitals with more than 250 beds to be recognized for their excellence. “Hospitals today are focused on improving outcomes, being more cost effective and enhancing patient experience,” said Byron Jobe, VHA Executive Vice President for Service and Delivery. “The Clinical Care Award recognizes institutions that are succeeding in those areas and are working diligently to identify areas of improvement, deliver even better results and lower healthcare costs for the communities they serve.”

Legal Notice

You are required to make defense to such pleading not later than May 13, 2014, and upon your failure to do so, the party seeking service against you will apply to the Court for the relief sought.

Irene Diehl Konrad died peacefully in her sleep at Aaron Manor Rehabilitation Center, Chester, Connecticut, on May 1, 2014. She was 94 years old. The only child of Robert and Mamie Diehl, Irene was born on March 16, 1920 and raised in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Bethlehem. Baptized and confirmed in the Moravian Church, she graduated in 1941 from Bloomsburg University with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Education and English and taught in the Bethlehem (PA) High School until 1947. Irene married her Fountain Hill High School classmate, William (Bill) Andrew Konrad, on December 23, 1944 during his service with the United States Navy. The couple resided in Takoma Park, Maryland until relocating to New Jersey in 1947, when Bill began his Manhattan-based career with Exxon and its Venezuelan subsidiary, Creole Petroleum Corporation. Irene continued in her profession as an educator and school administrator in New Jersey until 1968, when the Konrads relocated to Caracas, Venezuela. The family later moved to London, England, where Irene helped her husband launch and manage a spot-market oil trading enterprise until 1974. The Konrads retired to Boca Raton, Florida in their mid-fifties and Irene became active in the local community. She was the first lady of Boca Raton during Bill Konrad’s tenure as the city’s mayor from 1981 through 1987, and she served on the boards of many civil, cultural, and charitable organizations, focusing her efforts on activities to benefit the community as a whole. Upon retirement from public life, Irene and Bill circumnavigated the globe by train in 1987, and by freighter in 1988, with other trips to Greece, Israel, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. After her husband’s death in late 2006, Irene continued to live in her Boca Raton home until May, 2013, when she relocated to Aaron Manor to reside closer to her only child, Scott, and his family in Essex, Connecticut. Irene is survived only by Scott; his wife, Candace; and their daughters, Kate and Emily. The family plans a private entombment in Boca Raton, Florida and, in recognition of Irene’s lifelong love of animals, has asked that any remembrances be donated to the Humane Society of the United States (www.humanesociety.org). Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home of Centerbrook, Connecticut is in charge of the arrangements.

No. 7 Men’s Tennis Season Comes To An End In NCAA By Olivia Coiro

Lynn University’s men’s tennis team was blanked, 5-0, by No. 3 Barry in the NCAA South Region 2 Championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights finish the 2014 campaign 16-7 overall. Barry improves to 23-2 and will advance to the NCAA Championships round of 16 May 14-17, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Barry took a 3-0 lead in doubles play which began with Lynn’s Vlad Cirla and Pavel Mojha falling, 8-5, to Romain Costamagna and Leo Vivas at the No. 2 spot. The duo trailed 3-0 early but fought back to win two quick points and keep the match neck-and-neck through the very end. No. 8 Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli lost a close 8-6 battle to second-ranked Ollie Lemaitre and Ahmed Triki at the top spot in the lineup. Tomas Prokop and Guilio Gomba lost, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles to Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi. Guilio Gomba, who was filling in for an injured Alessio Iannozzi, was the first to fall at No. 6 singles. Lombardi defeated the sophomore, 6-0, 6-1, to put Barry within one point of advancing to the NCAA Championships. Nico Dreer sealed the deal when he defeated Lynn’s Mojha, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Lynn now stands at 26-26 all-time versus the Buccaneers since first meeting in 1989. This season BU defeated Lynn in all three meetings between the Sunshine State Conference rivals. The Blue & White have appeared in 12-straight NCAA Tournaments and have met Barry in the South Region Finals two out of the past three seasons. The Fighting Knights will graduate one senior, Cirla, who ends his career with a 54-22 singles record and while going 73-15 in doubles.

The World Cup sticker album from Panini has been one of fascination for kids and adults alike, and has been for at least every four years. In 1998, on the heels of the World Cup, my dad bought me my first ever World Cup sticker album. Gluing stickers into an album seems elementary, but the excitement one gets when opening a pack and seeing that one card they’ve been missing is hard to duplicate. The addiction is fun especially when you’re a kid. Your parents go and buy you the packs. You look over what you get and trade the cards you already have. However, when you’re in your 20s or even 30s, mom and dad aren’t buying your packs anymore and you see these 20 and 30-somethings spending money like water on World Cup stickers. I’ve seen people walk out with over 50 packs at one point. You need 640 stickers to complete this summer’s World Cup album from Panini. However since they are sold in packs of 5-7 (depending on where you live), the amount of duplicates increases everytime you buy more stickers. FIFA TV made a calculation that states in order to have a complete album, you must have buy 4,505 stickers to ensure a complete album. That’s roughly $643 spent on buying packs of stickers! When the 2014 World Cup Album was released, I rushed out to purchase one. And to my disbelief, I walked up to the counter to ask where they were and the cashier looked at me and said they were sold out. The United States has clearly caught World Cup sticker fever. There’s no doubt. This year, many stores and people alike are doing sticker trading days where they go to a place with their duplicates in hopes of trading for stickers they need to complete their album. During my first encounter with a Panini sticker album in 1998, I was still living in Brazil at the time. That year, my entire first grade class had an album. We would brag about getting players the others didn’t have,

or we would brag about the “shiny-ees.” During that 1998 school year, we all became professional negotiators. “You want my shiny Brazil crest? Well that will cost you 5 regular stickers.” We would play games with the duplicates we had. One game, in particular, was where we picked the cards from the other person that we needed, and they would do the same. Then, we would place them faced down on the table and we would hit the table in hopes some of the stickers you picked would flip up. If the stickers flipped, you kept them. If they didn’t… well, you didn’t get them. It’s safe to say, I was hooked. The following year, I received the 1999 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A sticker album by Panini. I never completed that album, but it’s one of my favorites, as kids in school would do the same thing we did for the World Cup one for the Brazilian League one. When I moved to the United States, I was afraid I would never see another Panini sticker album again since soccer wasn’t as big when I moved here. In 2002, I asked my grandmother to send me a World Cup album from Brazil. She did and she also sent over hundreds of packets to go with the book. Again, I never completed that album. The 2006 edition of the World Cup Sticker album is missing from my collection, as I never got a chance to get one. But then in 2010, I was at a Walgreens pharmacy and noticed the 2010 version of the sticker album. I simply had to have it. Opening those packets in 2010 reminded me of 1998 when my dad and I would go to the newsstands and buy a few packets, and then rush home to open them up in hopes of getting the stickers I needed to complete the collection. Personally, I love the sticker album hobby. I think it’s an European and South American thing though as most of my American soccer friends here have no idea what they are and always question why a grown man would be so happy to buy stickers for a book. They’ll learn soon enough!

Thousands of parents, siblings, volunteers and fans were on hand to cheer the players on to this first-ever world record. “We’re thrilled that the nation’s oldest youth soccer organization has established this record,” said Paula Berriz, AYSO’s National President. “AYSO’s #SoccerFEST14 was the perfect way to celebrate our 50th Anniversary, a perfect example of the principles that guide us. We welcome boys and girls of all ages and skill levels, and we’re dedicated to delivering fitness, fairness and fun in every single AYSO community.”

#SoccerFEST14 was presented by DOLE® Fruit Squish’ems, the Official Snack of AYSO. DOLE is the largest fruits and vegetable company in the world. Fruit Squish’ems are an all-natural fruit snack in a squeezable pouch. “AYSO brings our community lots of fun,” said Rose Arsenault, an AYSO Regional Commissioner in West Palm Beach, Florida. “It also instills values like fairness, teamwork and respect and establishes healthy exercise habits which last a lifetime. Every parent and volunteer who makes AYSO a valuable resource in our neighborhoods is always proud to serve our kids – now, we all own a world record and that’s a great tribute.” From Hawaii to New York, Oregon to Florida, and Montana to New Mexico, AYSO’s #SoccerFEST14 crisscrossed the nation. But winter and spring have not always been kind to the long-planned event. The hard winter and turbulent spring left some communities with fields under water and others with wind damage. “Our hearts go out to those communities in recent weeks that have been hit by tornados and flooding in so many parts of the U.S.” said President Berriz. “Everyone is joining together to support them in making sure their fields are ready for soccer in the fall.”

Strikers Move Into Second Place in NASL Standings with 3-1 Win Versus Edmonton The Fort Lauderdale Strikers left Canada with the full three points after defeating FC Edmonton 3-1 at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. With the win, the Strikers (3W-0T-1L) move up to take sole possession of second place in the NASL standings. Goals from Martin Nuñez and Fafà Picault put the Strikers up 2-0 with a half-hour to play. Edmonton cut the deficit through Daryl Fordyce but a Mark Anderson penalty kick ensured the Strikers claimed victory. As the match approached halftime it looked like the teams would go into the dressing rooms level. With just five minutes left in the first half, Nuñez got on the end of a low cross from Picault, turned his defender and fired the Strikers into the lead. Edmonton made two substitutes at halftime, but it was the Strikers who came out in the second half looking like the stronger side. In the 63rd minute a long ball

was headed down into the box by Darnell King into the path of Picault, who beat his defender and the goalkeeper to the ball to double the Strikers’ advantage. The hosts cut the scoreline in half just ten minutes later. Substitute Daryl Fordyce got on the end of a pass from Tomi Ameobi and used the back of his heel to turn the ball past Oka Nikolov in the Strikers goal. But an Edmonton comeback was not on the cards. Minutes after making the score 2-1, Albert Watson was called for a handball in the box. The FC Edmonton captain was shown a straight red card and ejected from the match. Mark Anderson stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and made no mistake with his effort, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore the Strikers’ twogoal cushion, and sending the Strikers into second place.

Golf Life in boca By Stan Moore

Golfing Presidents Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877) Grant is believed to be the first U.S. President to hold a golf club and attempt to hit a golf ball. After his presidency, Grant made a two and a half year trip around the world, which included a stop in his ancestral home, Scotland. In his Personal Recollections of General Ulysses S. Grant, one of Grant’s biographers, Gen. John C. Smith wrote: “ induced to enter the game and being given a club by the caddy, the general looked earnestly at the ball, then at his club, and having measured the distance, carefully made a strike, his club going six inches above the ball.” Grant tried several more times, Smith says, but was never able to hit the ball. And he never touched a golf club again.

Lynn Women’s Golf Wins NCAA Regional By Chad Beattie

An 11-stroke lead heading into the final round ended with a 15-stroke victory for Lynn University, sending the top-ranked women’s golf team to the NCAA Division II National Championship to defend their title. The Fighting Knights won the NCAA Super Regional 2 tournament for the second consecutive year while Ellen Chambers became the first in program history to claim co-medalist honors in a NCAA Regional. “This was the epitome of a complete team effort,” said head coach Danny Randolph. “Our girls did a great job of being prepared and it showed by the three quality scores we put together. Obviously this victory gives us a lot of momentum going into the national championship on a course we played in the fall but we need to be prepared for another battle with some of the best teams in the nation.” Joining the Blue & White at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C. to compete for a national title May 14-17, will be Barry and Rollins College. Lynn scored rounds of 297-291-293 for an 881 total, 15 shots better than the Buccaneers (896). The Tars (901) overcame a one-stroke deficit to Florida Tech heading into the third round to claim the final spot. Chambers started play with a seven stroke advantage but host Saint Leo’s Marie Coors shot a one-under 71 to tie with Lynn’s senior. The Petrie, Australia, native finished with a 54-hole personal-best score of 218 to earn her second career tournament vic-

tory. Coors qualified as an individual for the national tournament along with Florida Tech’s Johanna Larsson and West Florida’s Daisy-May Kenny. Louise Manalo broke her 54-hole personalbest score for the third time this season and for the second consecutive tournament. Two weeks after shooting a 222 at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in the Sunshine State Conference Championship, the junior golfer posted a 220 to finish fourth individually. A day after tying for her worst round of the season, Jessica Bradley rallied back to post a two-under par 70. She would finish seventh with a score of 222, extend her string of consecutive top-10 finishes to 12 straight tournaments and take sole possession for career top-10 finishes with 24. Smolen, who was tied with Bradley for career top-10 finishes, just missed out on keeping the tie with a 226 score. She had her best day on the course with a 73 but tied for 14th. Irene Calvo rounded out the Fighting Knights contingent, shooting a 234 over the three-day event. Lynn is now just 72 holes away from repeating as NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Champions. The Fighting Knights have already sneaked a peak of the championship course having participated and won the Division II Fall Preview on October 29. It served as one of the 10 victories Lynn claimed this year and was in the middle of a conference-tying seven tournament winning streak.

Men’s Golf Moves Into Contention Behind Vitienes’ Performance By Chad Beattie

Senior Ernesto Vitienes posted the thirdlowest round of the tournament in helping Lynn University’s men’s golf team move into a tie for third place at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional. Along with Vitienes’s low score, Keith Greene rebounded to shoot even par as the Fighting Knights also posted the secondlowest team round of the tournament. Opening the afternoon in seventh place, the Blue & White struggled to get things moving, shooting five-over as a team. But the second nine holes proved to be the saving grace as they shot four-under to move into a three-way tie with Florida Tech and USC-Aiken (585) for third. The trio trails leader Nova Southeastern (582) by three shots and Barry (584) by one stroke. Host Armstrong (589) sits sixth with North Alabama (590) in seventh. The top-seven teams advance to the NCAA D2 National Championship. A member of two national runner-up squads, Vitienes provided the maturity and experience on the back nine after posting a

two-over 38 thru the first nine. The senior from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, birdied five of his last seven holes to head to the clubhouse with a three-under 69 at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club. He is tied for sixth individually and trails the leader by three strokes. Greene had a disastrous showing in his first NCAA Tournament appearance but shrugged it off to record 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys en route to a 72. After a bogey on No. 7, Greene would birdie the next three holes to move to two under. Bogeys on 14 & 15 pulled him even and he closed out his round with three straight pars. Jose Andres Miranda shot a one-over 73 despite a double-bogey on the par four No. 10 hole. Miranda has momentum in his favor for the third round after shooting twounder golf over his last eight holes. He is six shots back and tied for 12th individually. Martin Cancino mixed two birdies with five bogeys for a 75 while Elliot Whitley shot a 77 on the second day. He also has momentum heading into final day after posting an eagle on his second to last hole.

FAU Defeats 26th Ranked UCF

For the third time in 2014, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team went on the road to face an in-state, nationally ranked team. For the third time, the Owls walked returned home with a victory. Five pitchers combined for a three-hit, 1-0 shutout of No. 26 UCF (29-20) in Orlando on Tuesday night, and each recorded a strikeout, marking the third time the Owls (25-23) have shut out an opponent. Sophomore Brandon Rhodes got his third win of the season, dealing 2.1 innings of relief. Kyle Miller threw 3.2 innings of shut-

out baseball in his second start of the game. Kevin Alexander earned his sixth save of the season as he forced a three-up, threedown ninth inning. Esteban Puerta reached on an infield error in the fifth inning and moved to second on a single by Mitch Morales. After a groundout moved the runners into scoring position, a passed ball allowed Puerta to score the game-winning run. Brendon Sanger, Tyler Rocklein and Stephen Kerr, who made a barehanded play in the game, also earned hits for the Owls.

If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented aniontechnology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling. Anne M. from California agrees. “Bambusa socks are absolutely the most comfortable socks I have ever worn! My feet are no longer fatigued!” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 17% to 22% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Jahner comments on the 3D-weave technology. “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo increase blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved comfort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and less numbness.

use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” "Circulatory dysfunction affects MOST of the adult population in the United States. Heart Disease, Strokes and Diabetic conditions are at epidemic levels; anything that improves circulation improves cellular health and vitality. I use the Bambusa product myself and recommend it to my clients. It really works!” states Dr Jahner. Results in Minutes? John G. of California claims he felt immediate results with his tired, swollen feet. “Without exaggeration the relief was almost instantaneous. It is like a heating pad set to low and wrapped around my calf. I will be replacing my entire set of dress socks with these socks!” Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues. “My feet felt wonderful, cool, and I never got that pins and needles feeling anymore. I love my BambusaTM socks,” says Nancy, from NJ. They are ideal for diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy or injury from repetitive use. BambusaTM socks can also bring comfort to tired legs within minutes of putting them on, energizing individuals who spend long hours on their feet. Goodbye to Pain and Numbness Marilyn H. has suffered persistent foot problems for years and noticed fast results. “The issue for me was per-

sistent numbness in my toes - it was gone completely after a few days of wearing these socks! Being diabetic, I never had pain-free feet UNTIL NOW!” “I went out on the golf course for 18 holes of golf, and when I got home my feet weren’t swollen, they weren’t sweating and my feet didn’t hurt,” says Lou B. from New York. BENEFITS: • Increased blood flow and oxygen • Reduced swelling and pain • Anti-microbial • Wicks away moisture • Increased range of motion IDEAL FOR: • Neuropathy • Raynaud's Syndrome • Cramping • Cold Feet Tom from NJ reports, “I suffer from chronic foot cramps. My feet were sore for days after the cramping. My wife gave me the BambusaTM socks, I wore them, and the foot cramps stopped. I replaced all my socks with BambusaTM. My feet feel great now.” Try Bambusa Risk Free! Order Bambusa™ at no risk and receive two bonus pairs of socks absolutely free! The technology used in BambusaTM socks is independently tested to boost circulation, blood flow and oxygen. These circulation-boosting socks allow you to wrap yourself in relief.
