Tri-Rail Growth In Boca By Kathryn Wohlpart

Public transportation is taking off in Boca Raton, starting with the Tri-Rail station on Yamato Road being the busiest station along that track of Tri-Rail stations. Now, Tri-Rail is looking to expand in Boca by adding a new station off of Military Trail, just two miles south of the existing one. Tri-Rail’s current Boca Station has 1600 riders daily, a number which Tri-Rail’s Public Information Officer, Bonnie Arnold, does not think will be affected by opening a new station nearby. “It may draw some traffic away from the other station, but probably not a substantial amount because there will not be much space for parking,” said Arnold. Due to the lack of space in the area Tri-Rail is looking to build in, the new station will be heavily reliant on shuttles, which the city of Boca Raton is ready to supply. “[Tri-Rail] had previously looked at the King’s Deli site on Military Trail south of the Glades Road overpass,” said Arnold. The show is set in Southern California, but has been filming all over South Florida including locations in Boca Raton, but the future of South Florida’s film and TV production industry is now uncertain as state lawmakers failed to approve a tax credit funding package. The production tax credit funding of $296 million is already used up through 2016 and without incentives producers may go elsewhere for the tax break. Industry sources estimate film and TV production generates $1 billion in economic impact annually in Florida and provides 25,000 jobs. • Arturo Gismondi will be opening La Nouvelle Maison at 455 E. services from $1 to $4, depending on the area of the county. • Cash strapped Public Television station WXEL in Boynton Beach is discussing merging to survive with Miami PBT station WPBT, and the union is designed to save programming costs paid to the national network, which both stations carry most of the same programs at the same time. • The cash rich South Florida Seminole Indian Tribe is on the acquisition trail, looking to buy a bank to service its 2,500 members who receive $120,000 each per year from gambling revenue. Local banking pros say the tribe will also add to its considerable profits by setting up a major loan operation at the bank. Tri-Rail Growth In Boca May Create a Pedestrianized City Continue from page 1 The increase in shuttles and public transportation is believed to increase pedestrian traffic; a pedestrianized downtown area will have a positive impact according to William Cross, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s Director of Planning. “There are many restaurants and shops within an easy walk that should benefit from increased activity, boosting sales. Several significant employers are also located within a short walk and so this station should open up new opportunities for commuting without an auto, as well as new markets for these employers to draw upon for employees,” said Cross. The new Tri-Rail station also has the potential to ease some of the traffic on Glades Road by opening a new route for commuters. “The station will provide an alternative to an auto trip to the Town Center Mall and other major employers in the area, many of

whom currently arrive via I-95 and Glades road,” said Cross. Tri-Rail also has an initiative in the works called the “Coastal Link.” Tri-Rail is planning on adding links from the current Tri-Rail tracks to allow access further east. According to Cross, the benefit of the Coastal Link “is that it does serve the historic downtowns that grew up along Henry Flagler’s (now FECR) railroad and they provide an exceptional opportunity for transit to serve walk able downtowns and generate economic development.” The expansion of public transportation in Boca Raton may allow a more walk-able city around major businesses. Public transportation can also allow for a family to eliminate one car and save around $10,000 annually according to Tri-Rail’s website. With the creation of a new station, Tri-Rail is looking to impact the local economy as well as local transportation.

Spanish River High School Teacher to Attend Holocaust Seminar By Tiye Barnes

Bettina Hoffman, an English teacher at Spanish River Community High School, has been chosen to participate in the 2014 Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers’ Program, a three-week summer seminar in Washington D.C., Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. The highly selective program, from July 1-19, is designed for secondary school teachers who implement Holocaust studies in their classes. Hoffman, who has a doctorate, is among 30 secondary school teachers throughout the United States who were selected. They will visit historic sites and hear stories from survivors of the Holocaust and prominent scholars. Hoffman could not be reached for comment despite calls left at the school. The program was initiated in 1984 by Vladka Meed, a courier and weapons smuggler for the Jewish resistance in Poland during World War II and publisher of a harrowing early chronicle of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Meed achieved a strong legacy through the force of her writing and lecturing for six decades. She contributed articles to the Jewish news-

paper, the Forward, became a vice president of the Jewish Labor Committee and started the national teacher-training program on the Holocaust that highlighted the role of the Warsaw resistance. She liked to correct misperceptions that armed resistance was the only type that thrived in the ghetto. Her mother, she told the Forward, performed “an act of spiritual resistance” by continuing her son’s religious-education training in the ghetto and paying the private tutor with scraps of bread. The cost is $3,000 per person, which is greatly funded by sponsors of the program: The American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants, Jewish Labor Committee, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, other supporters, and alumni of the program. The teachers chosen are individuals who will be committed to educating their students on the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance, organizers said. Upon her return, Hoffman will share her experience and knowledge from what is expected to be an amazing, fulfilling, and educational journey. She will be teaching a year-long course in Holocaust Studies next year at Spanish River.

State Ordered to Grant DUI Course Provider Approval for New Broward Program Boca Bay DUI Program Inc., a Broward County-based company hoping to open a new DUI education program, has prevailed in its formal complaint against the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDHSMV). On April 9, Florida Administrative Law Judge Mary Li Creasy issued a Recommended Order directing the Department to grant Boca Bay the license to operate the DUI program in Broward County. On April 24, 2014, the Department’s Director entered a Final Order adopting the Recommended Order and granting the license. Judge Creasy agreed with Boca Bay’s claims that the Department incorrectly denied its licensure application to open the first new “driving under the influence” program to serve residents of northern Broward and southern Palm Beach counties. Never before had a DUI program challenged the Department’s licensure determination to final hearing, and the Department had not issued a new license to anyone in Florida since 1997. “We’re very pleased with the findings and order of the administrative law judge. Boca Bay presented an application and business plan that met the requirements of the statute and the Department’s regulations for issuance of a license, and will greatly enhance the services available to the local population of northern Broward and southern Palm Beach counties,” said William G. Salim, Jr., Boca Bay’s counsel with Moskowitz, Mandell, Salim & Simowitz P.A., in Fort Lauderdale. “Yet, at every turn, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles denied the application for licensure with unsubstantiated points and what the judge herself called irrational arguments that seemed to protect an existing monopoly.” The complaint, which had been filed with the State of Florida Division of Administrative Hearings, sought to have overturned the DHSMV’s February 2013 denial of Boca Bay’s application. Boca Bay executives and company attorneys claimed the Department overlooked market needs and specific course offerings that would provide important court-ordered services to a large part of South Florida currently under-served by existing programs. Boca Bay’s original application sought to provide Level I and Level II DUI education classes, substance abuse evaluations, special supervision and IID monitoring, services ordered by the court in cases of DUI. For those with suspended driving privileges,

a location near mass transit and on a heavily trafficked road would reduce the hardship of attending programs. Boca Bay’s November 2012 application seemed to be a perfect fit for the area. The new location was proposed for Military Trail at the intersection of West Hillsboro Blvd., blocks from the North Regional Courthouse, a short walk from the TriRail station and 1,000 yards south of the Palm Beach County line. The nearest programs were no closer than 14 miles north or south. Moreover, an enhanced schedule of classes was proposed, including in English, Spanish and Portuguese, with classes limited to 4-hour sessions to promote retention (versus the 6-hour sessions offered by existing providers). Although the DUI program curriculum is largely standardized by the Department’s regulations, Boca Bay proposed providing individualized counseling to meet the particular needs of its students and a testing requirement. State administrative code allows students to attend a DUI program where they reside, work or go to school. Though proposed for North Broward, in Florida’s 17th Judicial Circuit, those residing in South Palm Beach County, part of the 15th Judicial Circuit, who work or go to school in Broward County, legally could attend courses there. In its denial, the DHSMV made numerous errors and assumptions. The Department ignored the requirements of applicable statutes and rules when reviewing and denying the application. It relied on incomplete, insufficient and constantly changing client data compiled by the Department from existing DUI program vendors. The denial noted that program vendors can only serve one judicial circuit, even though the regulations allow students to attend for convenience based on where they live, work or attend school, even if those cross circuit boundaries. “Contrary to the Denial Letters, approval of the Application and grant of a DUI program license to [Boca Bay] will improve service to residents in the 17th Judicial Circuit in and for Broward County, Florida, and will also improve service in the 15th Judicial Circuit in and for Palm Beach County, Florida,” Judge Creasy wrote in her recommendation that Boca Bay be awarded a license to operate the program. “The Department failed to properly assess any of these factors in the evaluation process. Petitioner demonstrated by a preponderance of the evidence that it met all relevant criteria.”

He didn’t elaborate on the incident but it was evident in his voice that he wanted to prevent any such reoccurrence – at least in Delray Beach. The police department had handpicked about 12 people from the community – some like me who work with youth, others because of their access to resources and a few residents with a conscience of helping to brainstorm and find a solution. Together the 18 big hearts, including a handful of officers, in that room were on one accord. They wanted to reduce the number of drowning in the African American community by teaching kids to swim. They brainstormed and eventually agreed to participate in this year’s World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ event on Friday, June 20. It’s the perfect way to help kick off the first official weekend of summer and spread the message that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™. It was clear in that meeting that something needs to happen to de-stigmatize the fear of water among African Americans; they will continue offering other initiatives. With Delray Beach having a seemingly endless supply of swimming pools and the Atlantic Ocean at our doorstep is often a great source of angst for that one segment of our population. Children of all races need to learn how to swim so they can stay safe, but the drowning rate among

black youth is so alarming that it screams for attention. African-American children age 5 to 15 are 5.5 times more likely to drown in a swimming pool than their white peers. The disparity in swimming ability is greatest at 11−12 years — that time in life when children start pressing for independence and freedom from their parents. And black kids drown in pools 10 times more often than the rate of white children. That’s nearly 70 percent of black children who do not know how to swim. That is the highest for any ethnic group, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There needs to be an outrage. Sadly, though, parental fear — especially among blacks and other minorities — often prevents children from learning how to swim, according to the USA Swimming Foundation’s finding, in its 2010 report. A lack of nearby pools and affordability of swim lessons are also factors. Children must be confident in water, not scared. They need to develop skills that allow them to swim, paddle or float their way out of danger, not succumb to it, and perhaps even to be able to help someone

else who is encountering difficulty. They also need to be able to swim not just to save their own lives, but because it opens up a whole world of adventure - whether it’s in a pool, on a river or at the beach — that they might otherwise be too scared to enter. Assistant Chief Jeffrey Goldman, who has been tapped to take the helm of the police department in Sept. 1 when Chief Anthony Strianese retires, has made it clear that his agency will do more than fight crime. It will champion the effort to shrink the pool of kids who drown in Delray Beach every year. The movement has fuel from the Drowning Coalition of Palm Beach County. But its greatest asset is Thaddeus Gamory, founder and head coach of SwimTriPros of South Florida. With impressive credentials, the retired New York Police lieutenant brings an arsenal of resources as well as experience. He is fired up and wants to focus on increasing swimming competency among diverse populations as well as the prevention of unintentional drowning. I think swimming lessons for children should be mandatory and affordable. After all, we pay taxes so the roads are nice to drive on; we should ensure our children

are safe. That’s why CRA Media Group, the parent company of the Delray Beach Tribune, is lending its support to promote this campaign. Palm Beach County is blessed with a network of non-profit organizations such as the Y.M.C.A., the Boys and Girls Clubs and Milagro Center that have swimming programs, instructors and pools in place. These centers could make swimming lessons mandatory, which would benefit their clientele, regardless of its racial makeup. The handful of public schools with summer programs could incorporate swimming into their lesson plans. Several of the attendees promised to check with their agencies to see if they could devise a plan to address the transportation issue. Transportation should really not be an issue. Let’s face it, this All America City faces immense problems of all kinds, many of which are more pressing than teaching kids to swim. But for the parents of those two boys - Dairion Demesier and Jean Orilas – who watched as rescue workers pulled their lifeless bodies from the pool, not knowing how to swim is the biggest problem there is.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

Not Just Keeping the Law, But Exceeding It When I began consulting with business and professional leaders, seeking to bring truths from the Bible into every scenario, it seemed like a good idea to take an honest look at myself first. I examined my life for any past issues, asking if there were any unresolved areas where I had failed to uphold the biblical principles that now served as my guides. I reasoned if I was not willing to live up to the standards God had established - even if only through the 20/20 vision of hindsight - how could I justify counseling with business and professional leaders to heed the same standards? As I undertook this personal inventory, an issue I felt convicted about was a small corporate debt that remained unpaid from a company I had owned previously.

Even though this debt was a corporate obligation, for which I had no legal responsibility personally, God was making it clear to me He wanted all of my business dealings to be pure and above reproach - including this one from the past. It took some time and effort, but I succeeded in tracking down the business that was owed money and sent them a check for the full amount. The owners of the business were amazed, and called to tell me so. They also informed me that since the debt had been written off some years before, they were donating the payment I had just sent to a local church. Even though the financial obligation had been absolved and forgotten, I knew that did not release me from my responsibility before God. Integrity is not something you

can turn on and turn off, whenever it suits your purposes. To be known as persons of integrity, we must strive to uphold that standard 100 percent of the time. This situation seemed like a test in which God was asking me to demonstrate I trusted Him enough to do the right thing - even if it affected my checkbook. Ephesians 5:3 teaches, “But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.” It is easy to profess certain beliefs and values, but living them out - especially if there is a personal cost involved - is much more difficult. Yet that is part of our calling as followers of Jesus Christ in the workplace. “Actions speak louder than words,” the adage tells us, and if we hope to have any impact for eternity among the

men and women we interact with every day, our behavior must be consistent with our professed beliefs. God’s standards often exceed the existing laws, and as God’s ambassadors it is always best for us to go beyond what is required. The Bible offers this word of caution: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity” (Proverbs 11:3). By properly resolving the issue of the unpaid debt, there was no fear of it ever arising again and casting doubt on my integrity as a businessperson and consultant. And since the payment I made was passed on to a local church, who knows? It might have been an answer to prayer for a special need within that congregation. Nothing like killing two birds with one stone, as they say!

The Need for Authenticity Persons who relate well to others, and are appreciated and loved by family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and acquaintances, should attempt their utmost to retain that status by all legitimate means. Remember that things which may make you attractive to some pfeople, do not necessarily make you credible to them. Your sense of security in solid relationships should never give you the right to deviate from the path which elicited that appreciation and affection previously lavished on you! Unfortunately, some people take undue advantage of the confidence and respect placed on them, by acting differently, and even changing certain behaviors altogether.

Being well-established once, in the estimation of other people, requires continued authentication of one’s actions to everyone in the circle of relationships. A person’s word must be, and always remain, one’s badge of honor; it should be taken seriously at all times; it is something that needs to be kept at all costs. It is tragic when any man or woman loses trustworthiness, since that is not so easy to recover. And such loss occurs, most often, not through major scandals but, rather, by small tasks left undone, promises not honored, and on account of disregard for any commitment left unfinished, whether major or minor, significant or insignificant, by the

one who is being derelict in duty. It is by acting faithfully in small matters that one is advanced to greater tasks and responsibilities, not to mention a position. That is how work promotions occur; that is also how politicians enjoy re-election to office, anywhere in the world. Take all commitments seriously, whether any may appear to you of insignificance. Other people are adversely affected by your neglect, or lack of responsibility. The way you are thus viewed by others may change, and the trust you once enjoyed from several people will vanish away! Honor your agreements; act responsibly in all situations. When duties are fulfilled and

commitments are observed, good things inevitably result, for the good not only of one, but of many! When your reputation is lost in the desert, the knowledge of that loss always follows you into the city! Strive to avoid that from ever occurring in your experience by periodical, personal re-evaluation and by rethinking your sense of priorities. Make yours the words of an old song, which addresses this paramount issue: “I would be true, for there are those who trust me; I would be pure, for there are those who care.” And be consistently who you are, while always improving your attitude and persona.

Boca Native Son Honored for Clearing Blight in Metro Detroit Neighborhoods

Ray Crighton, a lifetime resident of Brightmoor, Mich., stands atop a hill on Lyndon Street gazing at a scene he’d never thought he’d see: a rolling, several acre field of green. Gone are the mountains of tires. The two drug houses were razed, no more stench from rotting mounds of trash, no more sound of gunshots. “I heard it all before,” Crighton, 48, said. “They’d come in with a single bulldozer for one day and be gone the next. But Bill Pulte

did what he said he was going to do. It’s been amazing.” Bill Pulte Jr. the 26-year-old grandson of Bill Pulte Sr., head of the country’s largest home-building company, was the first to champion the idea that rebuilding a new Detroit requires tearing down the old one first. “Historically, the approach to blight elimination has been sporadic, nonthoughtful, nonstrategic and laden with government bureaucracy,” Pulte, who grew up in Boca Raton, said. “At some point, you just have

to say enough is enough. Let’s get it done.” To that end, Pulte of Bloomfield Hills raised about $750,000 and created the nonprofit, the Detroit Blight Authority with former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. Applying the Pulte home-building model to blight, Pulte sought to clear entire neighborhoods of dangerous structures, saving money in the process and providing immediate results, like criminals disappearing. “Just like when you turn the light on,” he says, “cockroaches tend to scattter.” In Eastern Market, 10 blocks were cleared in 10 days. Similarly, in Brightmoor, the Blight Authority cleared out 14 city blocks. Among the debris: almost a dozen boats, more than 300 car tires and one dead body. In Detroit, the Detroit Blight Authority had cleared about 700 lots in two areas of the city since last year, one near Eastern Market and the other in Brightmoor on the far west side. The Detroit Blight Authority had set a demolition target of as many as 450 homes a week before Mayor Mike Duggan asked Pulte to step aside. The son of Mark and Noreen Pulte — his dad is the CEO of Mark Timothy Inc., Florida’s largest luxury homebuilder — the

young Pulte said he never wanted to work in the family business. “When you grow up all you hear about is two by fours and construction. That gets old real quick,” he said. While attending Northwestern University, Pulte got his helicopter pilot’s license and started an aerial photography company, employing 12 people at its peak. Upon graduation, he worked for businessman Roger Penske’s private equity fund. In 2011, Pulte started his own private equity firm, Pulte Capital Partners LLC, purchasing a kitchen and bath countertop maker in Illinois and air-conditioning business in Florida. Pulte says when he first took anti-blight to his grandfather, he balked. “He told me, ‘Look, I’ve been involved in Detroit for 60 years and I wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole,’ “ he recalled. Now that the Duggan administration has unceremoniously eased Pulte out of the city, Pulte said wryly: “I now know what my grandfather was talking about.” Ever the pragmatist, Pulte added: “I do think the Duggan administration is on the cusp of getting this done.” Pulte is now clearing blight elsewhere in the state and is consulting with cities across the country. As far as the Blight Authority is concerned, Pulte says: “The future looks bright.”

Arrest for Domestic Battery After Woman Jumps on Victim’s Back By Kathryn Wohlpart

Elissa Holden was arrested for domestic battery after an argument with her live-in boyfriend. Holden told officers she was mad at the victim because he was leaving for the

night and taking the dog. Holden proceeded to jump onto the victim as he tried to leave and held on, choking him. The victim continued walking, making his way down the stairs when Holden fell off his back, injuring her ankle and ripping his shirt. The victim suffered minor scratches and refused to allow the officers to take photographs of his injuries. Holden was transported to the Boca Regional Hospital to receive treatment for her ankle and then moved to Palm Beach County Jail.

Man Arrested for Fraud After Littering By Kathryn Wohlpart

Curtis Leeman Stanley was arrested for forgery of a credit card, fraudulent use of personal identification, and fraud after he was pulled over for littering. Officer Jacob Campbell pulled Stanley over after witnessing him litter outside of the Boca Raton Town Center Mall before entering his vehicle. Campbell had noticed a suspicious rental vehicle when he noticed Stanley and a friend enter a car a few spaces down. After performing a traffic stop, the officers asked Stanley if they could search his

car and he complied. During the search, Stanley was found to be in possession of 12 American Express cards, 10 of which were imprinted with his name and two of which were blank and void of account numbers. The cards were swiped through a card reader and showed irregularities. Upon further investigation it was revealed that the cards were linked to various people’s accounts, mostly from the Boynton Beach area. Stanley stated that he had found the cards and that “they did not belong to him, even though they had his name on them,” according to the police affidavit.

New and Old Techniques Crack Burglary Cases A rash of burglaries to work vans throughout Boca Raton came to an end with the arrest of the culprit. Since the beginning of May more than a half dozen vans from various businesses were broken into, with thousands of dollars of tools stolen. In some of the burglaries, video surveillance showed an older model red minivan leaving the scene. During the investigation, Boca Raton detectives learned of a similar burglary to a work van in Delray Beach, where their investigators identified Larry Burdgick II from a fingerprint left at the scene of their crime. Burdgick also drives a red minivan. Having

difficulty locating Burdgick, Boca Raton detectives turned to social media and identified Chante Maglia, who lives in Miami, as a girlfriend of Burdgick. When investigators went to Maglia’s address, they found Burdgick who admitted to the burglaries. While being interviewed Burdgick agreed to show detectives all the places in Boca Raton where he broke into the vans. He said he stole the power tools and immediately sold them on the street in Miami to support his crack cocaine habit. Burdgick was charged with seven counts of Burglary and six counts of Grand Theft.

Residents Still Waiting for Word on Body Found in Neighborhood By Jason Schultz

Residents of a West Boca community are puzzled and stunned after the body of a woman was found in a sports utility vehicle in their neighborhood earlier this week. “It’s scary, having kids in the neighborhood,” said Carolyn Swanson, who lives nearby. “Hopefully this was just something random that happened. Nobody wants anything like this in their backyard.” Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office deputies were called after a girl noticed the body in the Lexus SUV that was parked along Sandalfoot Boulevard West . The scene is just west of 228th Lane South in the Sandalfoot Boulevard Estates Mobile Home Park. Neighbors said they noticed the SUV

parked in the grass for about two or three days but did not pay much attention to it. The unidentified woman’s body was slumped in the passenger seat. Sheriff ’s investigators worked the scene for hours then towed the SUV away Monday night for further processing. Several residents said they heard what sounded like two gunshots Sunday evening. Sheriff ’s investigators however did not release any details about how she died. “It’s a messed up world,” said Daniel Kelly, who lives nearby. “Doesn’t really matter where you live, rich or poor, you’re going to have this happen eventually.” Anyone with information is asked to call 561-688-4000.

Gift of Life Soirees Into Summer with a Series of Events

The Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation is ready for summer, as it unveils four Palm Beach County events designed to increase awareness, donors and involvement. Gift of Life, an international bone marrow registry based in Boca Raton, is dedicated to finding matches for people suffering from life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. The registration process involves a simple ‘swabbing’ procedure that safely collects DNA by running a cotton swab inside the mouth. Utilizing cheek swabs at donor drives was pioneered by Gift of Life to simplify the registration process and has replaced the donation of a blood sample to join the registry for the past 14 years, said Jay Feinberg, Gift of Life Founder and CEO. “We organize about 1,000 drives that take place across the country every year,” Feinberg said. Donors must be between the ages of 18 – 60 and in general good health to join the registry; donors in their 20s are most urgently needed since they’re requested by transplant centers more than

80 percent of the time. “If people cannot make it to a drive, they are welcome to visit our offices in Boca Raton or they can visit our website, order a kit and complete the process at home.” Gift of Life has approximately 235,900 donors in its database, and has facilitated more than 2,700 transplants to date. All contributions are tax-deductible. A Father’s Day 5K and Family Run in Wellington will take place on June 15. For example, the actual process of donating, if a match is made, is much less invasive. Today, upwards of 80 percent of donors do not donate bone marrow; they donate blood stem cells taken from the arm. “It is a process that is similar to platelet donation. The donor is connected to a cell separating machine which removes blood from one arm, cycles it to remove the stem cells and then returns the blood to the donor’s other arm,” Feinberg said. “The whole process takes a few hours, so the donor watches TV or reads a newspaper; and when they are done, they go home. I think that’s one of the things that people don’t know. With an ambiance resembling a modernday Tuscan villa of yellow brownish walls, which hold the exquisite paintings of Yaacov Heller, Piatini is one of Boca’s newest Italian restaurants, in business since January of this year. Owners Lilo Teodosi and Alex Pepage partnered up and led the renovation of the former French style venue, “We started out with freshness in mind,” says Teodosi. Originally from Italy, Teodosi had an early start in the restaurant business at the age of nine. His passion for food and cooking grew stronger once he moved to London at age 21 and began to work in several different restaurants in everything from the kitchen to hosting up front. These experiences, along with his travels around Europe give Teodosi an extensive background in how various foods are prepared, “My travels helped me to understand new concepts of Italian cooking, like the use of smaller plates so people can share around the table.” After moving to Chicago in 1979, Teodosi was shocked to see how differently Italian food is prepared in the U.S., “The pizzaiola sauce here is loaded with peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, but the original Italian pizzaiola sauce contains only basic ingredients like garlic, tomatoes, oregano, salt and pepper.” Despite the contrasts, the chef was able to adjust and still tries not to compromise in the preparation of certain dishes which he makes as close to the original as possible. On occasion, and at the customer’s request however, he will go out of his way to accommodate the dish to the guest’s palate. As the chef, one of Teodosi’s main focus is on creating good quality dishes at an affordable price, “Keeping a low price doesn’t mean you cut into the quality of the food; it just means you have to do a good job

of shopping around.” Another important factor is freshness, and the chef makes sure to take care of that on a regular basis, “I go to the market every single day, and to keep the prices low what we do for example is, instead of buying the fish fillet, I buy the whole fish and we clean it up ourselves.” With this strategy they are able to remain competitive selling items at sometimes $10 less than other local restaurants. The pairing of Teodosi’s expertise as a chef and Pepage’s relationship developing skills with the customers and families that frequent the restaurant, has made it possible to create a welcoming environment where locals can come enjoy the food and each other’s company. With exquisite specialty dishes such as the chicken paillard, served with fresh arugula and tomatoes for the lighter eaters, or the grilled octopus with arugula and cannellini beans for the more daring palate, as well as a wide selection of great wine, at Piatini there is something for everyone. A good indication of a job well done at a restaurant, according to Teodosi is an empty plate, “I like to see all the plates coming back to the kitchen; if they are empty it means we did a good job.” The partners agree that in order to stay in business a combination of consideration towards the customers and passion for the job is a must to build a solid foundation of loyalty and continued success. “Fault in Our Stars” a Tear-Jerker

Need a good cry? “The Fault in Our Stars” is a sure bet to get the waterworks working. “The Fault in Our Stars” is the most effective tear-jerker since “Love Story.” I think it blows away that sappy 1970 doomed romance. A young guy named Josh Boone (“Stuck in Love”) directed “Fault” and Scott Neustader adapted John Green’s novel. Neustader previously showed his bittersweet romance chops with “(500) Days of Summer” in 2009 and “Spectacular Now” in 2013. Not coincidentally, Shailene Woodley starred in “Spectacular Now” and plays the principal role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in “Fault.” Hazel is only 17 and is a terminal cancer patient. The cancer has damaged her lungs so badly she has to lug around an oxygen tank for the tubes that go into her nose. Hazel’s mother Frannie (Laura Dern) frets that Hazel is depressed. “Depression is not a side effect of cancer,” Hazel says. “It’s a side effect of dying.” Nevertheless Hazel agrees to go to a cancer support peer group where she meets Augustus “Gus” Waters (Ansel Elgort), an 18-year-old cancer survivor who has lost a leg to the disease. Gus has a good friend Isaac (Nat Wolff) who has lost an eye to cancer and stands to lose his remaining good eye to save his life. This all may sound rather morbid, but it is not. Hazel, Gus and Isaac are witty, funny

characters and they speak words that get directly to the heart of the matter. They also get angry and do foolish juvenile things. Hazel and Gus are both avid readers, and Hazel turns on Gus to her favorite novel, “An Imperial Affliction,” by a mysterious author named Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe). Through somewhat miraculous circumstances Gus gets through to Van Houten’s personal assistant Lidewij (Lotte Verbeek), who lives with him in Amsterdam. Taking advantage of a Make-a-Wish grant, Gus books passage for Hazel, her mother and him to Amsterdam to meet the reclusive author and to find out why his book drops off in mid-sentence. After a magical dinner with Dom Perignon champagne courtesy Peter Van Houten, Hazel and Gus finally met the author. To say he was uncooperative is an understatement. He is an insulting, condescending, surly drunk. So much for an idealized image of a brilliant writer. What makes “Fault” so effective is that is balances mawkish sentiment with hard slaps of reality. We know the outcome of the story but we are drawn in anyway. Be advised to bring along some tissues. You will need them. My prediction is that we will be hearing from Shailene Woodley at Oscar nomination time.

The Misconception Of Perspiring In order for a muscle to move the body breaks apart calories, this releases heat. The blood heats up and the body moves the blood to the skins surface. That’s why your face gets red when you get warm. If the surface is not cool enough, then the body will produce water on the surface of the skin to evaporate and cool the skin that will in turn cool the blood. So the reason you sweat is not the amount of exercise, but your body’s ability to cool your blood when calories heat your blood. Imagine there is a sale at the mall and you get there at 4 PM on August 1st and there is no parking. So you park at the far end of the lot. Walking the ¼ mile to the door requires calories to be burned, but it is to hot out for your skin to cool you off so you start to perspire.

The next sale is January 1 and it’s a really cold morning, the lot is full at 10 AM. You amazingly get the same spot and start the walk. This time when you get to the door you feel fresh and invigorated. Everything is the same however your body was able to cool you off without needing to perspire. That is what happens when you workout. The greater the calorie burn in a given time the more difficult it is for your body to cool itself. When your body starts to perspire it will also try to get you to stop what is putting it in such a predicament that it has to cool down to prevent from overheating. Mentally defeating this urge is also part of what makes a hard workout harder, not the workout itself.

Secular Work and Spiritual Gifts What are your greatest strengths in the workplace? In other words, how would you describe the unique mix of talents, abilities and experience you have to offer to your company or organization? Sometimes we refer to these as “gifts,” and might comment that someone is particularly “gifted” in certain areas, such as leadership, administration, marketing, handling finances, investing, team building, communicating, and many other functions necessary for success in the marketplace. In considering our own traits, we often view them in terms of our own success - being able to earn a desired pay raise, meriting a promotion, receiving professional recognition, or achieving many other personal goals. But how often have you thought that perhaps your unique gifts are not primarily for your benefit, but for others? A friend pointed this out during a recent conversation. Being a writer and editor, I enjoy my craft - working with words to communicate ideas, concepts and principles I have found to be important and meaningful. I receive a measure of pleasure and satisfaction from the work I do. But ultimately, if what I have to convey through the written word is not shared with others, or found by them to be of value, in reality I am wasting my time. Years ago I heard a man recite a brief poem that made a lot of sense: “A bell is not a bell until it is rung; a song is not a song until it is sung; now love was not given in your heart to stay - for love is not love until you give it away.”

In a similar manner, we might say a personal gift we possess is not truly a “gift” until we give it away for the benefit of others. We might derive some results from the use of our gifts, but ultimately we have them to serve our companies, our clients and customers, shareholders and others. In the Bible we find a discussion of “spiritual gifts,” traits such as evangelism, faith, wisdom, healing, teaching and others. Each is given “for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). The passage then proceeds to compare these separate gifts with the individual parts of the human body, noting they are not intended to function independently but rather in concert with other organs. “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.... As it is, there are many parts, but one body” (1 Corinthians 12:17-19). We are sometimes tempted to take special pride in our distinctive talents and abilities. We must never forget, however, our success depends on the support of others with different capabilities. And we are urged to appreciate the contributions of others, just as we would hope they recognize our own. “But God has combined the members of the body...so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other” (1 Corinthians 12:24-25).

Public Relations Q I am planning to begin divorce pro-

ceedings against my wife in the near future. While we both make a good living, we are by no means wealthy, but we have somewhat more money because of the stock market rally the last few years. I want to remain in our home, with my wife and two children during the divorce, so that the expense of having to fund two households can be delayed as long as possible, as can the ultimate impact of the divorce on my teenaged boys. While there has been no physical violence, whatsoever, during the marriage there has, lately been significant acrimony, leading to occasional loud arguments. My wife believes that I have been cheating on her, with another woman, which is not true and her belief, and paranoia have become the very reason that I have decided to go forward. When I file my case, do I have to leave the house? Can she throw me out of the House? If I leave voluntarily, is that “abandonment”? If I leave voluntarily, will it hurt my chances of getting 50% custody of my sons? Winning cases in divorce court require you and your lawyer to know the law, prove the facts and impress the judge with your truthfulness and fairness. There is no obligation under Florida law for you to leave the marital home because you file dissolution of marriage proceeding against your wife.

Your wife can have you removed from the home only by filing a Petition for a Domestic Violence Injunction and claiming and proving that by virtue of your conduct, she has a reasonable fear of imminent harm to herself or the children from you, under the Domestic Violence, or Repeat Violence statutes. Usually injunctions are not granted without some physical contact by you against your wife, but serious threats can form a basis to remove you. Some domestic violence allegations are based upon fact, some fiction. Although less likely she can have you removed from the home under the dissolution of marriage statute, Chapter 61 of the Florida Statutes. Under that statute she would have to prove that you have caused the atmosphere in the marital home has become harmful to your children because of the arguing, accusations, and your involvement of your children in the details of your divorce. If you voluntarily leave your home, it may well adversely affect your case for rotating custody, a term used to describe the sharing of overnights with your sons on a 50%/50% basis. A judge might feel that your interest in the equal parenting is not genuine, but based on a wish to lower your support obligations, or just a bargaining tool in on other economic issues in your case.

7 Things to DO to Increase the Value of Your Appraisal Part 1 Whether you are looking to buy a home in today’s increasing market or refinance to obtain a more attractive rate, one thing that you need and cannot avoid is getting an appraisal. The vast majority of purchases and refinances have one thing in common, the APPRAISAL. I recently spoke with Mahmoud (Moody) Sir about appraisals. He is a Florida State Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser. He was offering some sound and practical advice to those who will soon be visited by that guy or gal toting a clip board, measuring device and cheesy smile referred to as the appraiser. When dealing with an appraiser there are 7 things you can do to increase the value of your home when being visited by an Appraiser.

The 7 things you can do are:

1. Talk to the appraiser prior to the visit:

Ask them their name, license number, years of experience and business address when setting up the appointment over the phone – and write it down. This serves to put the appraiser on notice that you’re an educated consumer. Appraisers are required to be “locational competent” in order to appraise a property in any given area; meaning that they have performed many appraisals in the area, are knowledgeable with the local economy and possible shifting business trends. Knowing the schools in the area is a factor that may draw families with children to a certain area over another. All of which are factors that may influence valuation. Moody said “you should also talk to the appraiser in order to have them set the expectations for their visit. For instance, I

set the expectations that I’m going to be measuring their property (from the exterior if it’s a house and from the interior if it’s a condo dwelling); I also tell them that I’m going to be taking picture from the exterior and from the interior. I tell them (based on lender requirements) that I’m going to be taking a picture of every bedroom, bathroom and common area in the place and that if any room is normally locked, that it needs to be unlocked for the purpose of the appraisal.”

2. Take care of smaller repairs:

What am I talking about? Exposed wiring, electrical outlets with missing faceplates, broken gutters, and missing or damaged fascia boards by wood destroying organisms (WDO) or wood rot. Even those leaky faucets or that pesky toilet that continues to run well after it’s been flushed, chipped

or flaking paint, missing roof tiles, etc. The appraiser is required to take notice and mention any deferred maintenance or needed repairs which are blatantly observable during a cursory inspection. While most of the mentioned repairs may not affect the value of the property it can stop a loan in its tracks and waist everyone’s time and money in the process. Moody was telling me “One simple missing face plate on an electrical outlet will require another visit by the appraiser to perform a final inspection, usually at a rate of $80 to $150. And if you don’t know who usually pays for those incidentals – then it’s probably you!” You’ve heard it before: “Communication is key!” so be proactive and ask the questions. And remember by taking care of the smaller repairs it can increase the value of the home in the

“Shrimp House” Restaurant Chain Opens Third U.S. site at Town Center

With a crowd of more than 300 enthusiastic, invited guests looking on, the Shrimp House restaurant chain officially opened its third North American location the night of Monday, June 9, 2014 at the Town Center at Boca Raton mall. “Let me just say, wow,” said Carlo Barbieri, president of Shrimp House LLC and CEO of the Oxford Group, the largest Brazilian consulting firm in the U.S., looking over the sea of faces that included Mayor Susan Haynie, Deputy Mayor Constance Scott and two other members of the Boca Raton City Council, Scott Singer and Robert Weinroth. Also in the crowd were Ambassador Helio Ramos, Consul General to Brazil in Miami, and members and officers of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, which

organized a ribbon cutting. Guests also had a chance to sample the restaurant’s fine shrimp, other seafood and pasta. Cally Morrill Takes the Helm of Lynn Women’s Soccer

Lynn University Director of Athletics Dr. Kristen Migliano announced the hiring of Cally Morrill as the next head women’s soccer coach on Friday afternoon. Morrill replaces the departed Chip Dutchik and becomes just the fourth head coach for a women’s soccer program that boasts four national championships. In four years as a head coach, she has compiled a 57-17-7 record. “Lynn University is thrilled to have Coach Cally Morrill take the lead of our women’s soccer program,” said Migliano. “Cally has an established record as a competitor and an educator and her successes as a player and a coach will bring incredible strength and vision to the Lynn soccer program. Under Cally’s new vision for the program, the team will be poised for success as we embark on the inaugural season in the new Bobby Campbell Stadium.” “I would like to thank President Ross and Director of Athletics Dr. Kristen Migliano for the opportunity to join the Lynn University Athletics Department,” said Morrill. “I am honored and humbled in their confidence in me. Her first season as head coach in Hickory, N.C., was one to remember as she helped guide L-R to a 16-2-2 record, the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament, the second SAC Tournament Championship in program history and a NCAA Tournament bid. Morrill also claimed SAC Coach of the Year recognition and saw eight players garner All-SAC accolades, including a Freshman of the Year honor. The Bears continued their success in year two with higher expectations. They finished 14-4-2 overall and 9-1-1 in league play, once again earning a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament before falling in the semifinals. Lenoir-Rhyne collected another No. 1 seed, this time in the NCAA Tournament, but fell to Belmont Abbey in penalty kicks. In both seasons L-R earned national-rankings and collected 13 All-SAC honors. “After talking with President Ross and Dr. Migliano, it is evident they believe the women’s soccer program has the tools to regain national recognition” Morrill added. “This is a program rich with history, new facilities and a perfect location, which combines to

produce a perfect environment for a soccer powerhouse. My goal and task is to take this program to the top of not only the Sunshine State Conference but the south region and national level.” The Fighting Knights will be looking for some of Morrill’s championship pedigree as they have qualified for the NCAA Tournament just once since 2000. Lynn claimed NAIA national titles in 1992, 1994 & 1995 before winning a NCAA Division II title in 1998. In all, the Blue & White have made 12 postseason appearances in program history with the last coming in 2011 when they reached the Sweet 16. Last year’s squad went 4-8-4 overall and 1-4-3 in the vaunted Sunshine State Conference. Lynn returns 15 letterwinners and 10 starters, including former First Team All-SSC selection Kirstie Schults, goalkeeper/midfielder Meghan Dolan and defender Georgia Robert. “My duty is to ensure Lynn women’s soccer reflects and enhances the academic mission of the institution, and to enrich a culture within the team where the players are proud to represent the program” stated Morrill. “Undoubtedly, the Sunshine State Conference is extremely competitive; however, the

current talent on the team, combined with the talent Lynn can attract, motivates and excites me to begin the momentum towards the 2014 season.” Morrill began her head coaching career at Lees-McRae and guided the Bobcats to a 27-11-3 mark. In her final season in Banner Elk, N.C., she led her squad to a 13-5-3 record, won the program’s first Conference Carolinas Championship since 2000 and earned a berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history. Morrill was named the league’s 2011 Coach of the Year for her efforts. Lenoir-Rhyne was the start of Morrill’s overall coaching career as she served as the assistant coach from 2007-09. The Bears had just one winning season in the three years prior to her arriving with new head coach Adrian Blewitt and seven in total since the program’s inception in 1990. While the first year proved challenging, a 7-10-2 overall mark, she helped develop a winning culture to a program that has posted six consecutive winning seasons and averaged 15.5 wins per year. Morrill was a four-year starter for the University of Alabama (2002-05), where she served as team captain and was named the squad’s MVP as a senior. She started 55 of a possible 58 games with the Crimson Tide, recording nine goals, nine assists and 27 points as a midfielder. Morrill earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Alabama as well.

Lynn’s Giardina Selected by Atlanta Braves in 2014 MLB Draft

Lynn University’s Sal Giardina, Jr., is the latest baseball player to hear his name selected for the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Giardina was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 31st pick (943 overall) in the 31st round on Saturday. He becomes the fifth player selected for the Fighting Knights in the last six years and seventh since 2003. “I am so happy to see Sal get the welldeserved opportunity to play professional baseball,” said head coach Rudy Garbalosa. “He has worked extremely hard since stepping foot on campus two years ago and has had tremendous success on the diamond. I was a pleasure to coach him and I look forward to seeing him succeed at the next level.” The Tampa, Fla., product blossomed in his senior year, leading the team and ranking in the top-10 of the Sunshine State Conference with a .359 batting average, 37 runs scored, 40 runs batted in, 15 bean balls and a .484 on-base percentage. Additionally, he hit 16 doubles and five home runs. Giardina garnered SSC Player of the Year accolades, making Lynn the first school in conference history with three consecutive Player of the Year honorees. He was also named the ABCA and NCBWA South Region Player of the Year.

Starting the bulk of Lynn’s game at catcher, Giardina threw out 30.3 percent of base runners, but also saw time at first base and shortstop. In two seasons with the Blue & White, he batted .327 with 23 doubles, 11 home runs, 61 runs and 64 RBIs. Giardina is the first positional player of the Blue & White drafted since outfielder Gabe MacDougall in 2009 (Kansas City – 27th round) and the third overall behind Beau McMillan (2003, Florida Marlins – 39th round). Lynn started a string of four consecutive years with at least one draftee in 2009 with MacDougall and followed with current Colorado Rockie Tommy Kahnle (2010, New York Yankees – 5th round), Andrew Virgili (2011, Chicago White Sox) and Ryan Gibbard (2011, Milwaukee Brewers – 14th round). Nolan Mulligan was Lynn’s second draft pick after being taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 26th round in 2007. Lynn finished 35-16 overall and advanced to its fourth NCAA Tournament where it recorded the highest seeding, No. 2, in program history. The team graduates nine seniors, including Giardina and All-South Region starting pitcher Jed Vandernaald but also returns All-SSC selections Alex DeBellis, Thomas Kain and Bill Mendek.

FAU’s Will Neuner and Richard Meade Win National Clay Court Open Division Doubles Tournament

Florida Atlantic men’s tennis players Will Neuner and Richard Meade competed in and won the National Clay Court Open Division doubles tournament. The rising seniors defeated the tournament’s number one seeded doubles pair in the finals to win the tournament and a coveted USTA Golden Ball trophy, the highest award given to amateur competitive players. “This is a great accomplishment from these two rising seniors. They played doubles together a couple times throughout the year and I knew they were very capable of playing together,” said FAU men’s tennis head coach Ricardo Gonzalez. “This should give Will and Rich plenty of confidence going into the season. It is nice to see our guys focused on their tennis by competing and trying to get better over the summer.”

Neuner and Meade, both of whom are taking summer classes, decided just days before the tournament began to enter the field. Meade a big contributor to the Owls’ success last season is glad the pair decided to play. “It’s a great feeling to win this tournament, especially because as a junior player coming up in the U.S., winning a Gold Ball is every kids dream,” said Meade. “So to accomplish a life long goal such as this while representing FAU makes it pretty special.” Neuner and Meade won easily in the round of 32, winning their match 6-2, 6-1. The round of 16 provided a little more of a challenge but the duo won handily 6-4, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Neuner and Meade took out the fourth seeded team and won 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. The semifinals proved to be another tough test going three sets before the Owls’ duo won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. In the final Neuner and Meade faced the number one seeded team in the doubles draw and won 7-5, 6-4.
