Bring Back Our Boys Rally Ends in Grief

Following the June 12th kidnapping of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar and Eyal Yifrah, the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County hosted a “Bring Back Our Boys” rally at the Boca Raton Synagogue. They stood in solidarity waiting for the release and safety of these boys. With heavy hearts a recent statement has been issued regarding the murders of these three boys. The Federation leaders, Albert W. Gortz and Matthew C. Levin wrote: “The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, our partner agencies and entire community join those in Israel and worldwide in horror, grief and outrage at the murders of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar and Eyal Yifrah. The bodies of these three innocent teens were found today in a field outside of Hebron following their June 12 kidnapping. As Jews, as parents and grandparents, as brothers and sisters, our thoughts and prayers are with the boys’ families as we

www.bocaratontribune.com

issue the strongest possible condemnation of these heinous murders. As always, our Jewish community stands together in proud solidarity, shoulder to shoulder with the government and people of Israel at the frontline of Jewish security as they stand up to terror, and we pray that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice. To those who advise us to be patient and allow the Palestinian Authority’s new unity government to succeed, we say, ‘If patience means that Israeli children will be kidnapped and murdered on their way home, our patience has already run out.’ We implore government officials here and worldwide to use the full weight of their leverage and authority to aid in reducing the ability of known terrorist groups to perpetrate such senseless tragedies.” Prior to getting news of their deaths the Federations’ Facebook page released the names of their kidnappers to be Marwan Kawasme and Amer Abu Aysha, operatives from Hebron. As the entire community grieves they will be looking for government officials to prevent these tragedies in the future and find some sort of justice for these senseless deaths.

Reaching for the Stars By Zelda Parker

During the last few years, I have had extensive experience working with special needs children of varying ages. It has been both rewarding and challenging. This experience has helped me better understand my own strengths and limitations and better appreciate the education and opportunities I have been offered throughout my lifetime. My experience has shown me that patience and perseverance are the chief characteristics of the person providing the education to these children. The education provider must be able to nurture the innate curiosity within each child and build the power of discovery into each lesson. The most basic element in providing educational opportunities to special needs children begins with building the rapport. Sometimes the education provider develops as close a bond with the child as his or her own parents. In essence, the educator becomes a mentor or a big sister or brother. The child must feel that the educator is absolutely watching out for that child’s best interests. This bond involves closely watching how the child interacts with other children as well as the environment. The child must feel comfortable with expressing his thoughts and emotions about a wide range of topics including controversial social issues. This rapport is built on the basis of being able to provide constructive criticism without value judgment. Another element in teaching children with special needs is to try to teach them basic life skills, which will allow them to gain a sense of freedom and independence. Teaching each child to be independent instills the confidence to move forward to meet new challenges and skills. The first time the child is able to go to the store and

pay with the proper change opens up a new frontier. Yet, another example is when the child reads the words and understands the sign: “50 percent off.” A third example is being able to understand the importance of depositing money in the bank and the art of saving money. In essence, try to level the playing field for the child, so that he or she is closer in development to peers. Peer pressure is often a negative when it comes to a child with special needs. The inability to keep up with peers can lead to the child feeling insecure and inferior to others for many years to come. A third element is the importance for these children to start with a simple task that has very definable outcomes and to complete it at his or her own rate. Quite often, adults do not give the child proper time and guidance and then expect the child to achieve the desired goal. Communication is the key. It is especially important for the child to know what is expected and how to reach

the goal. The child should be allowed the space to think independently to overcome obstacles. This allows the child to develop higher level thinking skills and to solve problems. It is important not to micromanage but provide guidance when necessary. Furthermore, it is important not to allow the child to become overly frustrated and to quit out of anger. The education provider should remember that often the best lessons learned were from mistakes that were made or tasks not completed exactly as planned. Once a child is ready, the education provider will know when to bundle simple tasks and provide more complicated assignments. A fourth fundamental for the special needs child is to capitalize on his or her hobbies. Many important facts and discoveries are made from letting the child branch out from an initial interest. This is perhaps the best way to teach research and follow-up skills. All types of higher-level learning can

www.bocaratontribune.com

be achieved by allowing the child to make discoveries and then pounce on the “aha moment”. Create the environment where there is a thirst for knowledge. Encourage the child to ask questions and draw conclusions. A fifth fundamental is to remember that individuals learn at different rates and by different methods. The lesson here is to get to know the child and match his other learning style and rate. Guide the child in developing by teaching to natural ability and teach that child how to compensate for inherent weaknesses. The biggest lesson to be learned is that you as an education provider make a difference in a child’s life. You hold the key to unlock the child’s potential. The sky is the limit. There is no turning back. Commitment, dedication, and a sense of purpose are your guideposts.

THOUGHTS FROM THE PUBLISHER By Douglas Heizer

More Than Only a Newspaper I am proud to announce that I am a grandparent — though none of my children have had a baby, per say. My son, Pedro Heizer, has launched a magazine version of his website, 90 Minutes Strong. After four years of working on a website dedicated to U.S.A. national soccer, 90 Minutes Strong has added a printed version. The magazine will be printed quarterly with its first issue launching as a World Cup Special issue. Though 90 Minutes Strong is under the Heizer Corporation, it is completely a

Pedro Heizer project: his idea, his effort, his — if you will — baby. With soccer rapidly growing in popularity in the U.S., I have no doubt that 90 Minutes Strong will take off and become its own business. The first annual Boca Raton Tribune Gala Dinner will take place in October, the save the dates will be posted soon. The Gala will help raise money for scholarships to help send Boca Raton students to Florida Atlantic University and Palm Beach State College. The Boca Raton Tribune will be teaming up with the George Snow

Foundation. The purpose is to help the community’s students continue their education and grow in Boca Raton. A series of open forums to bring topics relevant to Boca Raton will be starting on September 26 at Palm Beach State College. The Boca Raton Tribune will be teaming up with Palm Beach State College to hold these events. Palm Beach State College Provost, Bernadette Russell, and I are excited to join together for these events. More information will be released closer to the date.

We have also signed contracts with four major entertainment companies. Though we cannot reveal who these companies are yet, they will be placing advertisements with our paper. The Boca Raton Tribune is growing and is a great outlet for entertainment advertisement. The third annual Boca Burger Battle will be taking place on Saturday, July 12. The Boca Raton Tribune will be a media sponsor at this year’s battle in Sanborn Square Park.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Keeping Your Word! Never accommodate yourself to the irresponsible actions of others, much less your own. People need to be held accountable to their commitments, their promises, and whatever else is expected of them! Many persons hope that keeping silent about a duty not executed, a project not completed, a promised not fulfilled will make them disappear, or cause people to forget about it. Yet, usually such is not the case. The expectant individual will fill his or her mind with bad thoughts about the failure carried out by the other person. There’s no scale of significance about

whatever is promised but never delivered. As insignificant as a commitment may be to respond in some fashion, at a specific day or time, one’s word must count for something. There are people who even volunteer for things they know in advance they shall never tackle, much less complete! However, society cannot function adequately unless its members look more seriously at every commitment made, however small they might appear to be. Others are counting on its completion and delivery. It’s reasonable for anyone to be casual and spontaneous in certain things, but that

should never apply to duties upon which so many others depend. No one has the right to break a promise without timely informing those to whom it was made. It may be a phone call with information sought by another, an e-mail or letter to be written, a recommendation to be provided, a purchase to be secured et al. It’s often in smaller things that major blunders are created, and enduring disappointments take place! Although lack of seriousness in the fulfillment of smaller or greater responsibilities has existed throughout human history, it

appears that the current age may eventually be classified in history by varied designations, one of which might well be “the age of irresponsibility.” People today never measure the consequences of their actions or inaction even about significant issues! Make your “yes” always run swiftly to respond to what is expected of you, timely and efficiently. By the same token, may your “no” dispel any doubt in anyone’s mind about where you stand on a matter, great or small! In all situations, always keep your word!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Give Her A Voice “Each women wants to hear her own voice, her own message, her own point of view of her personal world and the world around her, without shame, judgment, or rejection,” says Marta Luzim, founder and president of Give Her A Voice (GHAV), a 501c3 charitable, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to bring awareness of and transform the impact of trauma and abuse through storytelling and the creative arts. “GHAV is a voice for those women wanting to heal or are in the process of healing and want to continue their recovery process through the creative arts.” Give Her A Voice is in the process of developing a second incarnation of The Telling, scheduled to be produced in 2015. The organization will hold workshops on two weekends in August, and is inviting women to join them in an inspirational, creative - and most importantly - safe environment wherein they will be able to share their stories in a community of support and acceptance. “There is a choice to be inThe Telling...” Luzim explains, “And to learn to write, speak, dance, and film their story as part of a bigger production. The first one-day Give Her A Voice Workshop will take place August 17th, and there will be a three day workshop the weekend of August 22- 24th. All women are invited to attend. FPL Invests in Major Upgrades

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) today outlined its 2014 electric system upgrades in the Boca Raton area that will benefit local homes and businesses. The company has started work on strengthening and upgrading major power lines and equipment throughout its system to help communities recover faster following major storms while improving everyday reliability for customers.

2014 Work in Boca Raton

This year’s investment includes upgrades to five main power lines serving key facilities in the area, such as the Boca Raton emer-

gency communications telecom tower. The projects strengthen the electric system to better withstand major storms and allow for faster service restoration following power outages. The work includes installing stronger utility poles designed to withstand wind gusts of 145 mph or more. Overall, FPL is upgrading 31 major power lines in Palm Beach County in 2014 – a record number. Other improvements in Boca Raton this year include: inspecting approximately 740 utility poles for strength, clearing vegetation – a common cause of power outages – from 145 miles of power lines and inspecting 15 major lines with advanced infrared technology. “FPL’s 2014 plan includes more projects to strengthen the electric system than ever before, including several in the Boca Raton area. While severe weather is likely to result in power outages, a stronger electric system means less damage, faster service restoration and more reliable service in all weather conditions,” said Manny Miranda, FPL vice president of power delivery. “This year, we’re investing more than $170 million throughout our system to strengthen the power lines and equipment that serve essential community facilities such as hospitals,

Water Utilities Department to Flush Lines with Chlorine

To maintain high water quality in the County’s water distribution system, Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department will temporarily modify the disinfection process used to treat our drinking water. The County will use a somewhat stronger disinfection process to produce chlorine residual instead of a chloramine residual from July 14th to August 4th, 2014. The County will also increase hydrant flushing during this time. This is a preventative maintenance process. Customers served by the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in their tap water during this period. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects.

If you are especially sensitive to the taste or odor of chlorine, keep an open container of drinking water in your refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate. Users of home dialysis machines, owners of tropical fish and managers of stores and restaurants with fish and shellfish holding tanks are advised to seek professional advice as the method for removing chlorine residuals differs from that of removing chloramine residuals from tap water. This process will not affect customers in Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay. Should you need more information on this change in the water treatment process, please call the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department at (561) 740-4600, option #3.

fire stations, water treatment plants and other facilities that are crucial to people as they recover from a storm.”

A Long-Term Commitment

When the planned 2014 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Boca Raton since the last major hurricane season in 2005: • Reinforced 12 major power lines, including those serving critical local facilities such as the Boca Raton Community Hospital and West Boca Medical Center, City of Boca Raton Emergency Operations Center, and the Palm Beach County Water Treatment Plant. • Inspected 8,200 utility poles, restoring or replacing those that no longer met the company’s standards for strength. Cleared 1,065 miles of power lines of trees and vegetation – a major cause of power outages. • Inspected 82 main power lines and equipment using the latest infrared technology, helping us address issues before they cause outages. Since 2006, FPL has invested more than $1.4 billion across its 35-county service area

– in addition to its other ongoing system maintenance and improvement work – to make the electric grid stronger.

Florida Power & Light Company

Florida Power & Light Company is the largest rate-regulated electric utility in Florida and serves the third-largest number of customers of any electric utility in the United States. FPL serves approximately 4.7 million customer accounts and is a leading Florida employer with approximately 8,900 employees as of year-end 2013. FPL’s typical 1,000-kWh residential bill is the lowest among reporting electric utilities in Florida as of year-end 2013, and based on data available in July 2013, is about 28 percent below the national average. A clean energy leader, FPL has one of the lowest emissions profiles and one of the leading energy efficiency programs among utilities nationwide. FPL delivered better than 99.98 percent service reliability as of year-end 2013. FPL has earned the national ServiceOne Award for outstanding customer service for an unprecedented 10 consecutive years. FPL is a subsidiary of Juno Beach, Fla.-based NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE). For more information, visit www.FPL.com.

Purse Snatcher Arrested After Chase

Boca Raton Police officers responded to a robbery that occurred at K-Mart, 1401 West Palmetto Park Road. The victim told officers she was walking to her car and was just about to open the car door when she felt a tug on her purse. She turned her head and saw a male trying to pull her purse away from her. After a brief struggle, the suspect pushed the victim to the ground and ran off with her purse. The victim was treated for bruises and scratches at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. A witness who heard the victim yelling for help saw the suspect run to and get in a black Monte Carlo. The witness took a picture of the car and showed it to officers. A description of the suspect and car were given to other officers. A short time later, an officer and a sergeant saw the car head-

ing north on I-95. Officers attempted to stop the driver of the car, but he continued to head north. After a brief chase the suspect crashed the car as he attempted to exit onto Linton Boulevard. With the assistance of Delray Beach Police, the suspect, identified as Keith Robinson, was arrested. Detectives spoke with Robinson who said he stopped to get gas on Congress and was never near the K-Mart. Robinson said he fled from police because he had illegal drugs (two pills) in the car, which he consumed before arrest. The victim identified Robinson as the person who took her purse. Subsequent to the arrest the victim’s credit car was found in Robinson’s pocket. Detectives charged Robinson with robbery and fleeing and eluding.

The Palm Beach Pops to Host Summer Rocks Mini-Concerts For Children

Children and parents enjoy the SUMMER ROCKS concert by The Palm Beach Pops at the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum in Boynton Beach on Friday, June 20

Charlotte Laurent-Ottomane, Executive Director of The Palm Beach Pops, today announced that the final two SUMMER ROCKS Mini-Concerts for children would be held in Boca Raton on the second Friday in July: July 11 at 9 a.m. Florence Fuller Child Development Center - East 200 N.E. 14th Street in Boca Raton July 11 at 10:30 a.m. Florence Fuller Child Development Center - West 10130 185th Street South in Boca Raton

Boca Life & Arts

Following four 45-minute sessions this week that focused on each of the four sections of the orchestra (Brass, Woodwinds, Strings and Percussion), the two culminating Mini-Concerts will feature approximately a dozen professional musicians from The Palm Beach Pops, wrapping up the concepts shared the last few days with several hundred local children. This “Music & You” education program – and the ones that were taught in June in Boynton Beach and West Palm Beach – were hosted by Mr. Music, Gary Mayone, who has been a member of the orchestra since its beginning, is the Principal Percus-

sionist, and can actually play every instrument in the orchestra. “Over the years we have seen budget cuts in our schools which has adversely impacted music and art programs. In response to this, our “Music & You” In-School Youth Education program was created, which is benchmarked to Common Core standards. The program provides a rich academic learning experience as the children are exposed, some for the first time, to a live orchestra and develop an understanding of how music is made. It has become one of the most successful educational programs in our community, reaching more than 90,000 students since its inception in 1998,” said

Ms. Laurent-Ottomane. “SUMMER ROCKS will be followed by a month long “Music & You” program in four North Palm Beach county schools this fall that will serve approximately 1,200 children in the classroom. While securing funding is challenging, The Palm Beach Pops bears the entire cost of these programs. We continue to seek funds for the program and are grateful to those donors who help us make this a reality for our community and our children,” she continued.

“Obvious Child” a Feminist Romantic Comedy

The Bread Diet I’m tired of hearing people say that bread is not good for you, especially someone who tells me they want to lose weight, and then goes on to lecture me on how bread is fattening and they won’t eat it. I say nothing while watching them ingest a 12 oz steak, baked potato with butter and sour cream, and anticipating dessert …but they would not touch the bread! When I tell people I consider bread a diet aid they say to me, “Bread is not good for you, how can you eat it when you’re a beauty/diet/health expert?” Healthy, nutritious bread Oleda Baker helps us eat less high calorie foods and less food in general. Eat healthy bread and you will not be able to eat an entire 12 oz steak. Bread is filling. It’s what and how much of it you put ON the bread that could be a problem. I love bread, and I have eaten it all my life at most meals. It is a mystery to me why people will pass on the bread or rolls because they are on a diet…yet order food heavy with tons of calories and fat and consume it all. Well, at age 79 I still eat lots of bread - I still weigh 120 pounds, and I’m very healthy, agile, with normal blood pressure without medication…and with the bone density of someone half my age according to my doctor. Forget about Atkins, No Carb, South Beach, and all the other dozens of diets. I say, try The Bread Diet! It’s simple. Bread is not fattening. An average slice contains 70 calories; an average roll is 113 calories. Bread is filling, helping to reduce the craving for higher calorie foods during the meal. A baked potato, for example, (104 calories) with butter (102 calories -level tablespoon) and sour cream (122 calories – 2 oz). It’s easy to see how a roll or bread, with just a little butter (or, better, none) can replace many calories (and fat) during a meal; in the baked potato example. An 8 oz Porterhouse Steak has 450 calories! Yes, one dinner roll has 20.1 carbohydrates and the steak has none but the “fat” content is more dangerous and certainly more fattening in the long run. When the No Carb diet became very popular, doctors saw how unhealthy many of their patients became…some developing heart problems… they were told to get off the No Carb diet. It’s a terrible diet to be on for more than a short time. I love my Bread Diet! So the next time you sit down for a meal, eat more tasty bread and less fattening food…you will lose weight… and even save money! Often I will have bread and two appetizers, one of which I take as a main course. I like a little dessert which I often share with my tablemates. Once in a while, if I decide to have an appetizer and a main course, I will steal a bite of someone else’s dessert…but I always eat my bread. For family dinner dieting buy the best rolls or bread…might be worth it to find a good bakery. Choose your bread as carefully as

July 4, through July 10, 2014

you would linger over a piece of meat to serve for dinner, or pick over the vegetables to get the best. Encourage your family to try it and, at the same time, cook and serve less meat and other high calorie foods at the table. I eat healthy bread usually with no butter as the bread I eat is so tasty. If you must have butter put just a little – you’ll soon find you won’t miss the “stack” of butter you think you need. We have nothing to lose but weight! For lunch have a sandwich. Choose nutritious sliced bread. Whenever possible, I choose breads for extra nutrition, as well as its stomach filling qualities. Be careful though if you are on a strict diet, some bread products are higher in calories, such as a 2 oz. muffin, 165 calories, and a 2 oz. croissant, 240 calories. One slice of whole wheat has 56, one slice of white enriched has 62, and pumpernickel has 79 calories. Put fresh cold cuts in between the bread…keep the butter and mayo low…use a little mustard for added flavor if/when appropriate and put some lettuce and tomato on it…yum, yum…and look at the low calories…take that, diet! Compare that, calorie and health wise, to a Big Mac (590 calories) or a Double Whopper w/ cheese (1010 calories)… no, no’s for health and weight. The texture, flavor and the taste of bread should be savored, eaten slowly…enjoyed. I’m sure you know that a great restaurant is known for and by its breads…not so tasty bread probably means it’s not the greatest of restaurants. Don’t underestimate bread…it is more than just a bread. If you feel deprived, or it isn’t

Jenny Slate is one gutsy woman. A star of “Obvious Child” she is at the center of a storm of controversy. In 2009 Slate gained notoriety by dropping the “F bomb” on Saturday Night Live, which effectively sank her chances as a cast member. That same year she starred in a 20-minute short that grew into “Obvious Child.” The role of female stand-up comedian was created expressly for Slate by writer-director Gillian Robspierre with Karen Maine. It took Robspierre four years to cobble together finances to produce “Obvious Child.” Now that the film is finally complete, in theaters June 27, a protest movement has been launched over NBC-TV’s refusal to run a trailer advertising the film. The reason? Abortion is a key part of the plot. Planned Parenthood was out in force at the advance screening of “Obvious Child” in Boca Raton. The organization fears the conservative movement will take away a woman’s right to choose whether or not to have a child. It’s an emotional, divisive issue, and it is not funny at all. Yet “Obvious Child” is a comedy mostly, about Jenny Slate’s hapless Jewish stand-up comic from Brooklyn named Donna Stern. Donna’s self-deprecating shtick is about her shortcomings as an ideal woman. It really is funny, at times blunt and gross subjects, as delivered by Slate. We meet Donna dur-

ing a particularly bad stretch of luck. Her boyfriend has dumped her for another, prettier woman. The tiny, offbeat used book store where she works days is going out of business. One night, drowning her sorrow, Donna hits it off with Max (Jack Lacy), a nice guy from Vermont. They end up at his apartment, and Donna awakes the next morning wondering what happened. Max is a responsible adult and he had a condom, but sometimes there are slipups. It is not much later Donna takes a pregnancy test and leans she has been impregnated. Donna is resolute about getting an abortion as early as possible. Her parents Jacob (Richard Kind) and Nancy Stern (Polly Draper) are understanding and supportive. Donna does not even tell Max the news, and when the truth comes out, Max, who has fallen in love, is entirely on Donna’s side. You could call “Obvious Child” a feminist comedy-romance. Obviously if you equate abortion with murder you are going to hate this film, so be advised of the subject matter. I am a firm supporter of the First Amendment, and I feel people have a right to see this film if they want to. I just hope we don’t see protests with metaphorical pitchforks and torches. A Vision For Your Future

Just Play Bridge

A noted research organization reports as many as 80 percent of all workers do not sense fulfillment in their jobs. They feel overlooked, under-utilized, or realize their work responsibilities and their interests share little common ground. This sounds like a lot of unhappy, discontented people. This is very problematic because our professions or vocations fill many hours of our week. In addition, right or wrong, our work has a major effect on how we perceive ourselves - our sense of self-worth. If you do not like the job that consumes a large portion of your life, inevitably this will greatly shape your attitude and overall outlook. Perhaps you are among these dissatisfied people but have become resigned to your “fate”: “I have bills to pay!” you might be thinking, or “Work is just a necessary evil, right?” That is what many people think, but perhaps the problem is a matter of limited vision. In the Bible’s Old Testament, Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” There are many applications for this truth, including the reality that if people lack vision for what their future could be, they often remain mired in a dismal present. One solution might be to find a new job. But many times that is more easily said than done. Poor attitudes often shift from one job to the next, as well. You could try to make your job more enjoyable by redefining it, changing your responsibilities so they align more closely to your interests. That may be possible. A third and perhaps better alternative might be to embrace a new vision for carrying out the job you have. The story is often told about three bricklayers working side by side. When asked what they were doing, the first replied, “Setting bricks.” The second answered a bit more ambitiously, “Building a wall.” But the third

showed true vision when he responded, “I am building a cathedral for the worship of God.” Talking about work, we often use the term “vocation,” which is derived from a Latin word and literally means “calling.” What if we started each day with the mindset - the vision - that we were pursuing our calling, whether it was a permanent or temporary assignment? As someone has observed, if you cannot do a proper job of serving God where you are, you definitely cannot serve Him where you are not. Here are a few suggestions from the Bible on how you can capture a new, fresh vision for your future: Understand who your “boss” really is. We have a very natural tendency to assume we are working for the head of our organization, or the one that signs our paycheck. The Bible offers a different perspective. “And whatever you do, whether in word of deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus...work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.... It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:17-24). Never fail to do your best. If someone you greatly admired and respected asked you to perform a very important duty, would you give it your best effort? The Bible says God has done that for us. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Imagine the impact you can have. Like the bricklayer cited above, even small, seemingly mundane tasks can take on great significance if we understand we are playing a key role in a grand, potentially life-changing enterprise. “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).

Q: I was married to my first husband for forty-five years. He had worked for the General Motors in Detroit his whole life. He was retired and had earned a pension, which continued to pay me after his death. The catch was that the pension would stop if I remarried. As the saying goes, “there is no fool like and old fool.” A friend of mine in Miami Beach fixed me up with a very nice man. We dated. We became “very friendly.” About a year, after we met we got married. It seemed like as soon as we got married he changed. He was no longer so sociable, friendly to me or loving. Now he does nothing but go to the Indian Casino to play poker, or sit around and drink beer and watch the big screen TV his son and daughter bought him for his 80th birthday. We don’t even sleep in the same room. I cook and clean for him. I’d have been better off if I rented a room from him, or moved in as a paid housekeeper. After six months of marriage, I’m thinking divorce. Yesterday he mentioned divorce. From what I have read in your paper, I know that we haven’t been married long enough to get alimony. trator of the General Motors pension and ask whether an annulment of the marriage would restore your pension payments. Marriages can be annulled based on fraud. One form of fraud upon which an annulment of marriage can be based, is the refusal of one of the marriage partners to consummate the marriage (have sex with the other marriage partner) after the marriage. The refusal to consummate can be emotional or physical. In order to prove this ground for annulment you would probably need the cooperation of your husband. You would both testify as to the circumstances supporting your position. Your attorney, in his or her opening statement, can explain to the judge why the annulment is important to you economically, and why you’re requesting an annulment, rather than a divorce. Whether the judge actually believed your testimony or not, an annulment would probably be granted, with a wink and a nod, as an easy and practical way to solve your financial problem. If that works out you might consider just saying, “Let’s just play bridge.” the next time your friends try to fix you up. Michael H. Real Estate The Boca Raton Tribune

Homes Inside and Out By Joshua Carlson

Affordable Housing: How You Can Help Did you know there is an easy way you can help provide affordable housing for teachers, nurses and others unable to afford a home? There is a specialty license plate designed by the Florida Realtors which does just that. The proceeds from the sale of the license plate will be used exclusively for housing programs. The plate has a great design to it. So many times we get caught up in the rat race and we forget about certain things. I am a prime example. I knew about this program back in 2005 when they were trying to pass through legislation. In order for the funds from the purchase of the license plate to become available the bill needed to be sponsored from legislators before it can become law. I remembered I wanted to get this license plate to help out the affordable housing program and was waiting to hear about when it passed legislature. But there was no more news about it so I completely forgot about it. Come to find out that in July 2006, Gov. Bush signed the bill into law. There are those whom work night and day

to protect our streets, teach our children and give medical care to us when we are sick. Many of these people do this because they love their job and helping us out in time of need. They get paid very little. Sometimes so little they cannot afford a place to buy. On the http://www.flhsmv.gov you can find the ranking of the money spent on specialty license plates. The number one license plate was for the Florida Gators which sold 96,701 plates in 2013 which equates to $2,417,525. In 2013 the “Support Homeownership Program for All” program came in at number 72 which sold 3,172 plates equating to only $79,300 in funds. It would be great if we were able to get together as a community and raise a significant amount of money for this program. And all you have to do is go online and purchase this specialty license plate. I would love if this program could break into the top 10 in 2014. Are you up for the challenge? I am… I just ordered mine the other day. I wish I knew about it sooner. It only costs $25 on top of what you would pay for

registration. You can purchase the license plate online, by mail or at the county tax collector’s office. Not only do you get the satisfaction of helping someone find a home but you get a pretty cool license plate as well. It’s the least we can do for those who put countless hours into teaching our children or for those whom risk their lives to protect us. If

you would like to purchase one you can visit www.flhsmv.gov or visit your local county tax collector’s office. The license plate is called “Support Homeownership Program for All”. Stay tuned for more tips, community and important information regarding your Home: Inside and Out…

Boca Raton Marriott to Undergo Renovations

By Kathryn Wohlpart

The Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center has been acquired by Carey Watermark Investors, a non-traded real estate investment

trust. CWI is looking to spend $7 million to renovate the “guestrooms, corridors and meeting space.” “As a member of the Marriott International family, the Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center benefits from Marriott’s strong reservation system and loyalty program as well as its superior brand recognition and demand among both domestic and international travelers,” states CWI. With it’s location being close to the Town Center at Boca, the Marriott will fit in with the mixed-use development at Boca Center. The Marriott will contribute to the Class-A office space, restaurants, and stores located adjacent to the hotel. “The acquisition of the Boca Raton

Marriott at Boca Center represented the opportunity to invest in a high quality, full service property in an established market with strong growth prospects and high barriers to entry. We believe that our planned hotel renovations—updating guest rooms to the Marriott ‘Room of the future’ brand standard and refreshing meeting spaces and guestroom corridors—will reinforce the hotel’s status as a market leader,” said Michael Medzigian, Chief Executive Officer of CWI. The Marriott will host 256 rooms in its 12 stories, newly renovated public areas, Cafe 5150 (a three-meal restaurant), two Concierge club levels, fitness center, business center and an outdoor pool and spa.

Gift of Life Launches Radio Program

Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation (www.giftoflife.org) will launch a new weekly radio program, beginning on July 8th from 4 to 5 p.m., on 1470 AM (WWNN). The show, called Gift of Life with Gregg, will be hosted by Gregg Francis, Barry Kaplan and Leora Lieberman. The show will feature inspiring interviews with people who have had life saving bone marrow transplants, as well as discussions with NHL hockey players and other well known athletes. Gift of Life is an international bone marrow registry that facilitates bone marrow and blood stem cell matches and transplants for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood-related disease. Gift of Life will be the first non-profit to have a show on this radio station. The inaugural show will feature an interview with Gift of Life Special Projects Coordinator, Nick Hudson, who will talk about his experience as a bone marrow donor and his subsequent decision to devote his life to helping people who need bone marrow transplants. Listeners will learn how they can register as a potential bone marrow donor. Co-host Gregg Francis is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. A CPA, Gregg earned his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at North-

western University. Gregg is the Founder of the “Michael Francis Soccer Academy” and “Pin Pals”, organizations that promote the value of exercise and athletics for South Florida’s youth. Gregg wholeheartedly believes in living life with a smile, and, in his downtime, he enjoys bowling, reading, the New York Jets, and soccer. Gregg has been married to his wife Lori for 17 years, and has two sons, Nicholas and Patrick. Co-host Barry Kaplan prides himself on being argumentative, confrontational and a strong debater. He is a graduate of Skidmore College, where he studied Business and Ceramics. A few of Barry’s hobbies include, rowing, yoga and pottery. Barry is an avid fan of Game of Thrones and enjoys belting out show tunes in the shower. Co-host Leora Lieberman is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, with a BA in English Literature and a concentration in pre-medical studies. Leora was born in Englewood, New Jersey and grew up in Weston, Florida. In college Leora volunteered at Shands Hospital and served as Vice President of her sorority. In her spare time, Leora loves going to the gym, drinking a great cup of brewed coffee, swimming, and being with the people she loves. Next year, Leora plans to get a Master’s in Public Health degree and hopes to go to medical school.

US Soccer Falls to Belgium 2-1 in Extra Time Thriller The U.S. Men’s National Team nearly pulled off the most dramatic of late comebacks, but Belgium held off the vigorous late efforts to earn a 2-1 victory against the USA in the Round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup at Arena Fonte Nova. Tim Howard had one of the best goalkeeping efforts in U.S. MNT and FIFA World Cup history with 16 saves. It is the most saves since FIFA has recorded that statistic in the World Cup. Julian Green made his FIFA World Cup debut and scored in extra time to keep the USA’s hopes alive when the squad was trailing by two goals. Romelu Lukaku’s 105th-minute tally proved to be the game-winner. Kevin De Bruyne assisted Lukaku’s first goal and also scored an unassisted goal in the third minute of extra time. With all of the defensive efforts during a scoreless 90-minute regulation, the USA had a high-percentage scoring chance in the third minute of stoppage time when Jermaine Jones headed the ball to a wideopen Chris Wondolowski at the edge of the six-yard box, but the striker’s right-footed shot skewed wide of the goal. Belgium advances to the tournament quarterfinals against Argentina on Saturday, July 5, at Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in Brasilia (12 p.m. ET, ABC).

Goal Scoring Rundown: BEL - Kevin De Bruyne (unassisted), 93rd minute: Shortly into extra time,

Belgium broke the stalemate as Romelu Lukaku dribbled from midfield to the right side of the box. USA center back Omar Gonzalez had a small clearance, but Kevin De Bruyne retrieved the ball, dribbled to his right and slotted at shot to the inside of the far left post. USA goalkeeper Tim Howard, who was a rock all night in the goal, could not quite stretch his right leg out far enough as Belgium took the lead. USA 0, BEL 1 BEL - Romelu Lukaku (Kevin De Bruyne), 105th minute: Belgium seemingly put the match out of reach for the USA when Kevin De Bruyne dished from the left side to Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku shot from the edge of the six-yard box past Tim Howard to take a two-goal lead. USA 0, BEL 2 USA - Julian Green (Michael Bradley), 107th minute: Julian Green made his FIFA World Cup debut in stoppage time of the first 15-minute overtime. In the second 15-minute extra session, Green came through in the clutch. Midfielder Michael Bradley chipped the ball in beautifully, connecting with Green at the penalty spot. In the air, the 19-year-old volleyed with his right foot into the right side of the frame. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois got a glove on the ball, but his slight deflection was not enough to change the trajectory of the shot. Green became the 21st American player to record a goal in a FIFA World Cup.

Golf Life in boca By Stan Moore

Do You Have a Short Game Handicap? If you really want to understand how a golfer plays the game-and therefore begin to understand how to improve his or her ability to score-don’t simply look at his USGA handicap index. Look at his short game Handicap! Do you have one? 65% of your score is from 60 yards and in. Wow! Studies by Dave Pelz, show that the short game can be drastically improved by golfers at all skill levels, because anyone can learn to control distances, mental understanding, practice time, and use the proper clubs. It is not a game that requires massive doses of talent, strength, or athletic ability. If your going to improve your short game, you need a method for measuring your progress. That would be your SHORT GAME HANDICAP. It will let you know how good a short game player you are now, and help you see improvement as you work on the skills. Measuring golfers abilities around the green, Pelz has learned that almost 80% of the average golfer’s handicap is determined by the scoring game. What does that mean? If the average 10 to 12 handicap golfer developed a “scratch” scoring short game, his overall handicap would drop to between 2 and 4. Scratch means consistently shoot-

ing par with with your short game. Playing your up and down game to par on every hole. This does not include putting. Only chipping and pitching. What about putting? There is nothing that affects the average number of putts per round more than a golfer’s ability to chip, pitch, and blast out of the bunker close to the hole. Another way to look at the importance of the short game to your handicap is that you can’t do much to recover after hitting a bad pitch or chip shot, while you often can recover from poor longer shots. Just like a poor putt, a poor chip, pitch, or sand shot is usually another whole shot lost to par. If your wanting to lower your scores then you should start by taking the Short Game Handicap Test. There are 8 test that I put you through to determine where you are. From there you start your work to improve your test scores. Test should be applied once a month to determine your progress. Your test scores can be compared to your handicap and also to Tour Pro’s because they set the standard. If your interested in taking the test contact me, Stan Moore at smooreaz@yahoo.com
