To most people, a place where you never have to say sorry is almost everywhere — you don’t stop to think about your actions because they just seem normal to you. To a mother of a child with autism, sorry is a word that is said far too often because people around her don’t understand what is going on with her child. When Gail Field brings her son, Jayson, to the grocery and stops by the deli counter he cries because he doesn’t like to stop so she is “always saying sorry.” Gail feels as though “people need to educate themselves on autism,” because Jayson is not throwing a temper tantrum, his senses are overloaded and he is overwhelmed. As part of their volunteering program, the Rotaract Club at Palm Beach State College goes to Boca Helping Hands every Friday to help out with their food distribution. After a couple of months of volunteering Nicole Richards was shocked to see two-year-olds with bare feet, grown men wearing torn up clothes, and girls her age without proper attire for school or everyday life. Thinking about how much clothing she had in her own closet, Richards was compelled to clean it out and even got her friends and family to do the same. Never Say Sorry at We Rock The Spectrum Gym Continue from page 1

Gail had a bigger dream for Jayson than constant apologies — she wanted to bring him somewhere she never had to say sorry. After researching for a place she could bring Jayson to play she stumbled upon We Rock The Spectrum Gym in California. Gail met with Dina Kimmel, the founder, to learn about franchising, and on April 19, 2014, Gail and her husband, John, opened up in Boca Raton. Kids jump on trampolines, swing, climb ropes, fly across the room on a zip line and engage their senses. Everything in We Rock The Spectrum is made to help autistic children engage in sensory activities and healthy stimulus. “Everything is working, and it’s working for both [normal and autistic children],” said Gail, “Normal kids get to play and autistic kids get to be engaged.” Gail looks around the small room that her

family has converted into a play area for all children and explains her vision of moving to a larger space in the future, expanding into water sensory activity areas and hosting adult and teen sessions as well as continuing to help younger kids. “Though some parents tell me they like that it’s small, you can sit on one side and see everything,” said Gail. One such parent sits, feeding one of her children as her son runs off to swing. “This is such a good place for him, who wanders off, it’s gated and safe. He can do what he wants without me being on top of him,” said Kristen Streit. “My son really can’t go anywhere so it’s great for the parents as well,” said John Field. John quit his job to make his and Gail’s dream happen, putting his full attention on their project. As Gail said, she “is not a business wom-

an,” so she needed John’s help in making We Rock The Spectrum happen and he was just as excited to get it started. “You know how when kids get so excited they forget what they’re saying? That’s my favorite,”

said John. To the Fields and other parents of Boca Raton, We Rock The Spectrum is a place where you never have to say sorry.

Philanthropist’s Final Gift Leaves Lasting Impact On Palm Beach County Education By Jason Schwartz

Just a few weeks before he died, David Anthony Jacobs, a longtime British political leader who maintained a home in Palm Beach County for more than 30 years, gave a gift that will benefit youth and education in the county for years to come. The Jacobs Charitable Trust provided $250,000 to Boca Raton’s Promise, a local nonprofit organization that supports education programs geared toward breaking the silence around mental health and addressing related issues such as bullying. Mr. Jacobs, who was knighted in 1988, had planned to deliver the donation during his final days. But when his failing health prevented him from doing so, he instead authored a letter announcing the donation, and had a driver deliver the good news just in time for it to be announced at a mental health event in Boca Raton. Rita Thrasher, president and CEO of Boca Raton’s Promise, says she is forever grateful to Lord Jacobs, and that it is because of his caring generosity that so many Palm Beach

County residents are being helped through the Breaking the Silence and Action Alliance projects. “He was a jovial, kind and beloved friend to many,” said Thrasher, who also is founder of the Palm Beach County Action Alliance for Mental Health. “His generosity will long outlive him and those privileged to know him will rejoice in the good works of Jacobs Charitable Trust for years to come.” Jacobs Charitable Trust funded five inspirational student-led musical performances of “Weight of Words” in five Palm Beach County District high schools, introduced mental health training for elementary school counselors, co-sponsored the Palm Beach County Interfaith Initiative; and launched sustained mental health community initiatives in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and Lake Worth. “Anthony was an incredibly generous and kind man and a true friend,” wrote Dee Doocey, Liberal Democrat members of the House of Lords, in the Liberal Democrat Voice, an independent Web site in the Unit-

ed Kingdom. “His charitable giving was legendary and he made significant contributions in the fields of education and the arts. There are many individuals and charities whose lives and causes have been enhanced because of Anthony. He was quite simply a giant amongst men!” Lord Jacobs was a lifelong supporter of the Liberal Democrat party and served in many roles including Economics and Taxation Advisor from 1973 to 1978. He twice fought the Parliamentary Constituency of Watford increasing the Liberal share of the vote from 6 percent to 24 percent. In 1984, he was elected Joint Treasurer of the Party and was returned unopposed each year until he stepped down in 1987. He was a keen supporter of the merger of the Liberal Party and Social Democratic Party and served as Chairman of the Party in England and Vice-President of the Federal Party. In 1988, he received a Knighthood and he became a life Peer in 1997. He had a highly successful business career spanning 33 years, during which time he

was chairman of three major companies - Nig Securities Group, Tricoville Group and British School of Motoring. But his first love was always politics and he fought a long campaign to persuade politicians to adopt his highly innovative plan to make radical changes to the way in which taxation is raised in the UK. Andy Wylie wrote that it is very fair to say that they would not have achieved so much in Watford if it wasn’t for his generosity over the years, especially in their impoverished days in the 1980′s. “He never forgot us and always wanted to know how well we did each year,” he wrote. “For such a man, with so many other things to do in his busy and worthy life, it meant a lot to us. He seemed to have time for everyone he spoke to, made people feel their contribution was important and was a true thinking radical. He was a type of man who is now very rare in British politics.” Lord Jacobs leaves behind his wife Evelyn, son Simon, daughter Nicola and his adored five grandchildren.

The following month, Richards brought out the clothing she’d gathered to Boca Helping Hands’ and handed out one full rack of clothing to about 200 people within ten minutes. After several distributions, people who were receiving the clothes began to ask if they could bring in clothing they didn’t wear anymore, which could potentially serve their neighbors.“This is how we came up with the motto: ‘Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Closet to Closet’, and it’s really brought the community together,” says Richards. Following the success of the first clothing giveaway, more and more articles of clothing continued to come in. When they could no longer fit in Richards’ guest room, Community Closet received a donation of a storage unit from Mr. Batmasian of the Rotary Club to house all the clothing. They now receive up to about 2,000 items a month with donations by residents who live anywhere from Deerfield Beach to Delray. Several local businesses have opened their doors to the Community Closet and have boxes in place so customers can drop off clothing. Richards is amazed at how much the project has grown, “we’re able to help every single demographic, from newborn infants to people in their 80s.” All the families registered with Boca Helping Hands live below the poverty level and therefore don’t have basic opportunities that most people take for granted like going out shopping. For this reason Richards had the idea of turning the clothing hand outs into a shopping experience, “we bring out carpet and try to make it look like a store for them because they don’t get to have those experiences.” The Community Closet has been going strong for three years now and the amazing

testimonies of people who’ve been helped by their efforts continue to flood in. One in particular was the case of an elderly man who had lost his home and had to go back to work at the age of 70. Too embarrassed to tell his kids about losing his home and having to find a job, he went to the clothing giveaway and was able to find a suit and dress shoes that fit him perfectly. Richards recalled, “he looked up at me and said: ‘I prayed to God that he would provide me with a suit, and here you are.” This was the moment she knew the Community Closet was something she wanted to do full-on. On one of their most recent drives the project was joined by Anthony and Matthew Pollack, a father and son duo, who also contributed with clothing. Matthew and John Pollack, ages nine and 12, are students at the Weiss School of Palm Beach Gardens and after seeing the clothing drive at Boca Helping Hands they presented the project to the student population and were able to gather dozens of bags of clothing. In partnership with Boca Helping Hands, the Rotary Club and Rotaract club, which sends out volunteers every week to help at the food drives, the continuous mission of the Community Closet is to restore dignity to those in need by providing them with clothing for job interviews or just for everyday life. As Richards says, “If you have on a dirty T-shirt and old sneakers, you won’t go to a job interview like that. So, in providing them with these items, it boosts their selfesteem and gives them a reason to be proud of themselves.” The Community Closet accepts donations at the Rotaract Club’s Office in Students Activities at the Boca Raton campus of Palm Beach State College. EDITORIAL By C. Ron Allen

Thanks for the Memories LeBron I was sitting in my office when one of my mentees rushed in with a big grin and said, “He is going home.” Immediately I knew he was referring to none other than the King. After all, everyone had been waiting on edge for almost one week to see what LeBron James, the best basketball player on the planet, would do after the Miami Heat’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA finals. I went to the bank shortly after, then I stopped by my “community office” at Dunkin Donuts and the reaction was as I expected – mixed. There were those who were happy he was going back home to Cleveland and the National Basketball Association's Cavaliers. And, as expected, there were those who called him a traitor for his decision. I think the young man deserves our applause and admiration, our open arms and our pats on the back. Like a child who goes off to college, learns all he can and in some cases returns home, James came to Miami, earned two rings, got married, and now he is returning home. James is an Ohio native who grew up in Akron, a 40-minute drive from Cleveland. The ailing Cleveland Cavaliers drafted him right out of high school. He was the handpicked child chosen to lead a franchise. Instantly, he was hailed not just as a saviour of a mediocre team but as the poster boy for a struggling city. And yes, he gave that city relevance. He also gave the team seven sensational seasons and pretty much leapfrogged his way up the scoring charts and did everything that was expected of him - except lead Cleveland to an NBA championship. When he left as a free agent for Miami in 2010, he broke hearts and shattered spirits. In fact, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert acted just like a jilted lover. He posted a rant on the team's Web site that referred to his former player as a coward, a traitor and a narcissist.

He also promised that the Cavaliers would win the NBA title before the Heat. (I once heard someone say that “Hell hath no fury like [an NBA owner] scorned.” By the way, the rant was finally removed from the team's Web site earlier this week. Cavaliers officials said it remained only because of a computer-system glitch. Ok. Wouldn’t I love to be that lucky fly on the wall when Gilbert and James discussed that rant? With James going home, the Cavaliers’ future appears brighter than the Heat’s. And going to Cleveland not only mends James’ image immediately but it is the best bet for bolstering his legacy. He can revive the Cavs, win another couple of championships, and who knows, eventually he will win enough rings to open a pawn shop. What can I say about those Miami fans who are acting like a bride jilted at the altar? Talk about unconditional love turned to unfading hate. Wow! They have no right to feel that way. James gave the Heat everything he had. He did all he could and, as was his right, left for

whatever reasons, to return home. After all, to some, there’s no place like home. And he did it with class. He did not make the announcement on a television show like he did when he flaunted his new love in the face of Cleveland fans four years ago: ‘‘I have decided to take my talents to South Beach.’’ That statement, by the way, has become a metaphor for sporting vanity and egotism. Like a college senior, I guess he learned and yes, matured. I just don’t get it. How unappreciative and unreasonable my friends are. Let’s face it, during his tenure with the Heat, James has taken the team to four NBA Finals and won two championships. Miami got its money's worth. The fans got to see the greatest player in the world wearing their jersey and hanging championship banners in their arena. If you should ask me, I think going back to Cleveland now isn’t personal. It’s business. Good business.

www.bocaratontribune.com

If the tables were turned, what would you do my friends? King James, thanks for the memories and best wishes going home my friend.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

Changing an Entire Industry One Person at a Time Have you observed practices or policies within your industry you do not like, things that seem wrong or inappropriate, yet they persist because “everybody does them”? What would it take, do you think, to make changes and correct these questionable practices? In Ken Eldred’s book, The Integrated Life, he addresses circumstances like this, offering an illustration of some men that took a stand against unethical business tactics. Eldred tells about two London grocers in the Middle Ages that decided the practice common of that day – using dishonest scales and weights in measuring meat and other food items – was unacceptable to God. What these men did was simple: They began testing and verifying each other’s weighing scales and holding one another accountable for adhering to God’s standards as

expressed in the Bible, rather than bowing to the prevailing the standards of the day. This was a bold move, even for that day, one that could easily have resulted in their small companies being forced out of business by unscrupulous competitors. Instead, God honored their commitment to integrity, and their faithfulness led to the formation of The Livery Companies, trade associations that have continued to this day and still hold their members to high ethical standards. Why were these grocery store owners so determined to combat cheating customers through inaccurate measuring practices? They may have had numerous reasons, but one verse from the Bible, Proverbs 11:1, clearly teaches, “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight.” The men took this scriptural passage to

mean exactly what it said and acted accordingly. To avoid any confusion, or a contention that this verse was taken out of context, the same message is stated in slightly different ways elsewhere in Proverbs: “Honest scales and balances are from the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making” (Proverbs 16:11). “Differing weights and differing measures – the Lord detests them both” (Proverbs 20:10). “The Lord detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him” (Proverbs 20:23). A more general principle the men may have considered is the so-called “Golden Rule.” As Jesus told His followers, “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law

and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). The grocers might have realized they would not want to be cheated by someone using scales that measured goods they received inaccurately. But the bottom line for them was not profit – it was recognizing that ultimately they were accountable to God. Perhaps the issues you have observed in your industry do not involve improper measuring practices. Maybe they involve promises and commitments that are not fulfilled, improper billing for products or services, or not paying financial obligations in a timely manner. You might think of other examples. But let me ask: What would happen if you and some of your industry peers banded together to change or raise the ethical standards of your industry? Would you have the courage to do so?

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

You Can’t Succeed All Alone! Succeeding at anything in life is often the outcome of a joint venture, it stems from a collaborative engagement. Every individual on earth is dependent on others if one is to function adequately in society, most especially in areas where something significant is the ultimate goal. Humans are social creatures and operate best interdependently because no single person ever has all the answers to anything. Furthermore, no person should be viewed as omni-competent on any life issue. Despite the abundant knowledge and proven skills which anyone may manifest, there’s something unique which shall still be lacking that only another fellow human can provide for the completion of something worthwhile. It’s good and commendable for anyone to show personal

initiative in a new venture, to attempt to do as much as he or she can on one’s own. But the time inevitably comes when others must be consulted, when the wisdom and skills from someone else are necessary to be brought onboard, before a project can legitimately reach its successful conclusion. A practical benefit stemming from all this, is that a unique fraction of the eventual product also brings credit to somebody additional. The inventor, the originator of the idea, the one who may have started the whole enterprise all alone, recognized the need to ask questions of others; she was forced to seek aid on complicated features. In other words, wisdom led that project initiator to acknowledge other elements of the work to which necessary, beneficial

expertise, should be sought and utilized! This concept was uniquely expressed many years ago, by a wise American when he proclaimed: “You cannot borrow character, but you can borrow brains.” With that in mind he diligently sought all the right persons with the expertise he lacked, and proceeded to build a great university which still continues to flourish in one of our southern states. The ingenuity and the final quality of any significant project shall manifest far greater superiority when it is accomplished with the participation of a well-chosen team instead of a lone ranger which is limited in scope and procedures. This applies to great and small endeavors! It takes joint efforts to bring great endeavors to benefit the human race at any level!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Look Before You Lock The summer heat magnifies in locked cars. Making sure no young children are left locked in cars is especially important during summer time. Five children were reported to have been locked in hot cars in the past week alone, some were hospitalized and all survived — but as the day gets hotter the chances of survival goes down. In 10 minutes a car’s temperature can increase by 20 degrees, making it important to watch young children playing by cars so they don’t accidentally lock themselves in or get left behind when parents are exiting the vehicle. Children’s body heat rises quicker than adults but it is just as important to

make sure that any at risk adults and adolescents are also evacuated from a vehicle. “During these extremely hot summer months it’s critical that parents take extra precautions to ensure they aren’t leaving children unattended in a car for any length of time.” Interim Secretary Mike Carroll said. “Too often we hear of children being left alone in cars and it is not only unlawful but the results can be fatal.” Seven children died from heat after being left in a vehicle last year alone. Anyone who sees a child left in a car should call for help immediately.

Boca Woman Charged After Making Mess in Store A Boca Raton woman was arrested and charged after police said she created a ruckus in a convenience store, put her teeth on an officer and spit on his boots, according to an arrest report. Police charged Anastassia Kolesnikova, 27, with battery on a law enforcement officer, retail theft, obstructing an officer without violence, and trespass. Officer Seth Dubinksy was called to the 7-Eleven, 103 W. Palmetto Park Road on July 8, after the woman began acting strangely, according to his report. Upon arrival, Dubinksy noticed Kolesnikova being belligerent to the cashier. She also yelled at the officer, Dubinksy said. Kolesnikova then went into the bathroom and came out with the soap bottle in her purse. She then stumbled around the store, put a bottle of wine into her purse and brought several items up to the register, according to the report. The woman also grabbed a fistful of individually wrapped candies, threw them on the counter, opened a bag of corn nuts, tilted her head back and poured the nuts all over her mouth. Most of the nuts fell on the floor and she spat the rest on a doughnut case that flew everywhere, Dubinsky said. When Kolesnikova tried to pay for the items,

she was shaking and had difficulty typing her pin number into the keypad, the report said. She then went to an ATM machine, grabbed more items from the store and allegedly spat on the counter, police said. The clerk tried to talk to her but she still couldn’t pay him, so he walked away, the report said. Dubinksy and his partner ordered her to leave the store and she refused, police said. As they were arresting her, Dubinksy noticed her clenching a lighter in her hand. “I told her to give me the lighter but she refused to release her grip,” the officer wrote. “I attempted to pry the lighter from her hands, but she held tight and began to bring her hand up toward her face. As she got closer to her face she dipped her head over and placed her mouth on my hand. ” The officer punched her in the head and took her to the ground. “She then spat on my mesh boots and I felt the saliva soak into the boots and my sock,” Dubinksy wrote. “She also spat on Officer Guberman’s boots. She kept trying to spit, at which time a spit mask was placed over her head.” She was released to her own custody from the Palm Beach County Jail after posting a $3,000 bond.

“Bernstein Lite” at Manalapan’s Plaza Theatre

By Skip Sheffield

Sheer talent overcomes many obstacles. The three-member cast of “Bernstein on Broadway” is overflowing with talent. The show plays through July 29 at the Plaza Theatre, 262 S. Ocean Blvd., Manalapan. Leonard Bernstein is the composer honored in the musical revue “Bernstein on Broadway.” Singing his songs are Clay Cartland, Lindsey Johr and Leah Sessa. The obstacles were mostly of the technical variety in the preview performance we saw: missed cues, faulty lighting, less than perfect sound amplification and a skimpy set. Nevertheless the talent of these three young performers, backed by Mark Galsky on piano, is undeniable. The musicals represented include “West Side Story,” which stands head and shoulders above anything else Bernstein (1918-1990) ever did. Other selections are from the modestly successful “Peter Pan,” “Candide,” “Wonderful Town” and “On The Town.” “This is our own version of Bernstein on Broadway,” explained musical director Mark Galsky. “It is unique. You won’t find another like it.” Director Amy London is not simply presenting a parade of greatest hits. After an overture arranged by Galsky, there are rarities and novelties along with such standards as “Tonight” and “Something’s Coming.” There is also a fair amount of humor and horseplay. The main prankster is Clay Cartland, whose sense of humor and comic timing is as good as his fine tenor voice. Leah Sessa is a fine actress with a powerful, wide-ranging belt voice. Lindsey Johr is an operatic soprano who shows her stuff on the insanely difficult “Glitter and Be Gay” from “Candide.” In all there are around 30 songs performed in two 45-minute sets. For every silly “Why oh why oh why-o did I ever leave Ohio?” or the downright dumb “Pass the Football” from “Wonderful Town” there is a hearttugging “One Hand, One Heart,” with the ladies poignantly recreating the bittersweet Maria-Anita duet. Leonard Bernstein was a very complicated man. His orchestral and operatic work is even more complex than anything presented here. Think of this as “Bernstein Lite,” and enjoy bright and breezy performances by three fresh-faced, irresistible talents. Tickets are $38. Call 561-588-1820 or go to www.ThePlazaTheatre.net.

Local Professor Dream Project with Boca Black Film Festival

It was once an idea. An idea that S. Lizabeth Martin, professor of Communications at Palm Beach State College, envisioned as a one-day concept for local students to gain first-hand insight and knowledge into film & TV during the summer break. The idea grew from educational workshop sessions and panel discussions to a promising film and screenplay competition for local black content makers that is now the Boca Black Film Festival. This year’s inaugural event will culminate with an awards luncheon that will honor the achievements of new, emerging, independent filmmakers while also celebrating one Floridian of color who has worked tirelessly to make an impact in film & TV and remain local. The Boca Black Film Festival is a 3- day event held almost exclusively at the Boca Raton Marriott. Day one, Thursday, July 17, kicks off with a collection of films that showcase black history and a film dialogue on the history of blacks in cinema. The “Culture, Heritage & Legacy” theme continues into Friday, July 18, with a special screening of The Black Miami. Co-director Carlton Smith’s documentary covers the creation and progress of Florida’s black history in direct connection to the growth of Miami. The documentary film is based on the book, “Black Miami in the Twentieth Century” by Dr. Marvin Dunn. Sessions and screenings aside, Professor Martin especially wanted the Boca Black Film Festival to annually recognize one local person of color who has steadfastly made

headway into the entertainment industry and still remained in the local community or state. This year’s recipient is Lyndale Pettus, a renowned photographer and filmmaker/ assistant director/producer and location manager for a number of films—2 Fast 2 Furious, Transporter 2, and top television shows—CSI Miami, The Sopranos and The Amazing Race, that have come through South Florida. He has an extensive IMDBlisting and is presently working on a major film project. Professor Martin had one goal in mind, over the course of the 3-day film festival— to celebrate black cinema, inform about the history of black cinema and showcase the talents of new, emergent talent. “There has always been a need for diverse representation in film & television content and story lines that looks like me, my parents, my kids, and my life experiences,” Martin shared. “These stories, like Florida and James Evans on Good Times or the Huxtables on the Cosby Show to films like Do the Right Thing and Soul Food, they can mean so much to a young person trying to find their way in this world. Diversity of perspective means that I can relate to this issue or topic and thus, I matter, and maybe, I am valued too.” The Family & Friends rate now offers a 50% discount ($100) to guests attendees that stay on site at the Boca Raton Marriott and provide hotel registration confirmation. The Awards Luncheon is $35. Festival registration is still ongoing and hotel reservations can be booked through the film festival site at www.BocaBlackFilm.org.

I am very honored and excited to be joining the boca tribune news team. I have lived in boca raton for 16 years and seen many changes to our fabulous town. I was introduced into boca society by my friend yvonne boice who invited my husband bob and i to the opening of the mizner park amphitheater where we sat in the box with the countess dehoernle and flossy keesley and we all became friends. These great ladies even attended my daughter’s wedding a few years ago, joined my red and black hat society groups and it

is indeed an honor to know them. I have learned much wisdom from the two of them. Yvonne invited us to many of the society charity balls, luncheons with celebrity speakers, cowboy ball, ymca, red cross madhatters lunch and i got to know many of boca raton’s movers and shakers.Thank you Yvonne for this great honor. I look forward to the coming society season in the fall and telling you all the great happenings in our beautiful city of boca raton.

Prevention Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Omax3® Ultra PureTM, have decided to giveaway 1,000 boxes in a massive initiative to get consumers to try it. “We believe one dose of this high performance 1.5g of omega-3 will change your opinion of fish oil with the dramatic results,” says Terry Tormey, CEO of Prevention Pharmaceuticals. Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. And some of that "extra" content you could do without, such as saturated fats, including unwanted omega-6 fatty acids, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs commonly found in fish. Freezer Test Proves Purity Omax3® was shown in lab tests to be 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. Put a pill of your store bought brand of omega-3 in the freezer overnight. Then put Omax3® Ultra PureTM in the freezer overnight. The difference is clear. The store bought brand will be cloudy, even a solid white. This is caused by the bad fats and toxins solidifying, which your body doesn’t need. Omax3® will remain clear, which equals safety and effectiveness. Fewer Pills Better Results The patented delivery system gives you 1.5g per serving in just two easy to swallow liquid gel capsules, compared to the 6-12 you would need to take of a store bought formula. This means fewer pills equals greater results, you can feel. Unique Blister-Pack StopsFish Burps The color of the Omax3® oil shows you its purity. The individually blister packed capsules protect against rancidity so there’s no fishy taste or stomach upset. Some AdviceAbout Advice When you are wrestling with a dilemma or problem, how willing are you to seek advice? And if you do look for advice, who are the people with whom you choose to consult? Seth Godin, a noted author, entrepreneur, marketer and public speaker, recently offered observations about good advice. He called it “priceless. Not what you want to hear, but what you need to hear.... Not designed to make you feel better, (but) designed to make you better. Seek it out and embrace the true friends that care enough to risk sharing it.” Godin says good advice is “priceless” because it is not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear. Too often we seek advice from people we feel confident will tell us what we desire to hear - to reinforce our conclusions or affirm decisions we have already made. But true friends and trusted advisors are not those that “tickle our ears,” but those willing to risk to tell us difficult truths if necessary. I remember a time when I had been at a good job for a number of years. Some aspects of it remained enjoyable, but I was feeling increasingly restless. One reason I was not inclined to explore other job opportunities was security - my compensation was reasonable, I felt “comfortable” in my role, and as with many people, the “known” seemed less threatening to me than the unknown. Then unsolicited, a friend asked me, “If money were no object - if you were assured of receiving the income you needed - would you stay where you are?” The question caught me off guard, but after some hesitation had to admit I probably would make a change. Then, again totally without being asked, three other friends made similar suggestions. As a result, I did

start to explore some other job opportunities I learned about and within a few months found a much more rewarding and challenging position. Their advice had indeed proved to be “priceless.” The Bible speaks often about the benefits of good advice and wise counsel, particularly in the book of Proverbs. Here is some of the advice the Scriptures provide about advice: Demonstrate wisdom by soliciting advice. We can easily convince ourselves that our thinking is right and we do not need the counsel of others. But by seeking advice, advisors might show the errors in our reasoning. “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice” (Proverbs 12:15). Seek counsel from several sources. To ensure you are getting correct counsel, it is helpful to consult with several people whose insight and wisdom you trust. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22). Receive good counsel and grow in wisdom. Not one of us knows all the answers so seeking advice from others gives us access to theor insights and understanding - to our benefit. “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise”(Proverbs 19:20). Do not fail to consult the “Counselor.” In Isaiah 9:6, God is called “Wonderful Counselor.” In seeking advice we would be remiss not to consult with Him through prayer and reading the Scriptures for teaching that applies to the given situation. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Is Credit Card Debt driving you batty?

I love the Town Center mall. I don’t shop a lot, but when I do… that is where you can find me. And there I was one recent evening in search of presents for my secretary and paralegal. My wife Bonnie was at my side, as I am not to be trusted in shopping for women’s gifts Earlier in the week a vendor that I use in my law practice had sent me a $100 gift card to The Capitol Grille, one of my favorites when I receive a gift card. The steak was excellent and the bill, plus tip only $72 more than the value of the card. It was the side show that caught our attention. An older couple and a younger, perhaps the older couple’s son and daughter-in-law, were seated next to our table for the older woman’s birthday. We are always tolerant of our senior snowbirds from the Northeast whose less than dulcet tones occasionally interrupt our own conversation with complaints of a table location and other restaurant features. We knew that when we came for dinner at a 6 p.m. time for pre-shopping purposes, we would not be dining, but using our gift card to get into the holiday spirit. We ordered a couple of nice glasses of wine and it was clear the folks next to us were doing the same, except for the condo-blonde mom, who, according to my wife, had ordered a martini. What caught our attention was the refill. When the martini was consumed, the woman took a container out of her designer purse and filled her martini glass with something that looked like a Cosmo.

When questioned by her family, her loud reply was that, “all of my friends do that. Why should I pay another $15.00?” We settled up and left for shopping at Nordstrom’s, one of our favorite stores and a good place to buy women’s items in our price range. On the way we noticed that one of the mall’s art galleries featured a personal appearance by Peter Max. While neither of us had any interest in Max or his work, we thought it might be fun to look at the gallery’s stock of the brightly colored, popular work of one of the few American Artists who has managed to make a good living with marginal work and top notch promotion. (Just our opinions.) Actually seeing this iconic figure might be fun as well. As you might know by now photography is one of my hobbies, and I approached Peter with my iPhone camera at the ready. He was less than cooperative. Sticking his hand up between himself and my tiny lens, he shouted, “No, no.” I did take a photograph, and I guarantee you I will not publish it in the Tribune, and the photo will not make my website. It dawned on us as we drove home that the subject matter of a large portion of the money made by Peter Max through his sales of paintings and reproductions peddled during his career were of a subject that was owned by us, and by you, through our government: The Statute of Liberty, a small National Park supported by our taxes. Perhaps he forgot.

Real Estate The Boca Raton Tribune

Homes Inside and Out By Joshua Carlson

Moving Made Simple Part 2 Moving Day:

In the previous edition we discussed ways to simplify your move into your new home by following different things to accomplish week by week. In this edition we will go over different things you need to do beginning 3 weeks from moving date.

3 Weeks from Moving Date:

At this time, you need to call the moving company and reconfirm the arrangements. Next you should call and schedule your time off of work. If you are moving to a different climate then it is a good idea to take care of your care service and maintenance. This will save you from having to take care of it when you get to your new home.

2 Weeks from Moving Date:

Make sure to refill any prescriptions you need and pack them in a safe place which you have accessible. Always have enough medicines for a minimum of 2 weeks Pack your suit case for as though you were going on a 1 week vacation. If you have not closed out your safety deposit boxes, now is the time to do so. Put all your valuables in one location so you do not lose them.

1 Week from Moving Date:

Reconfirm all the details with the movers from moving date, correct address for pickup and new location. Also verify they have your correct contact information in case of emergencies. Plan your payment to the moving company. Make sure you have a cashier’s check or the proper payment lined up for when the movers arrive to your new

home. BE CAREFUL: Many movers quote you one thing but sometimes will charge you up to 500% more to release your items when you get to your new home. There are ways and things you can do to avoid this. I will address this in a future column. If you plan on moving any refrigerators or freezers make sure to empty or defrost at least 24 hours in advance.

Pack up your suit cases and verify you have your box or containers of valuables which are going to go with you. Ask for the packing slip and verify the USDOT number from the side of the truck matches what is on the packing slip and that all information is correct. And do not have them leave without you getting a copy of the Bill of Lading/Inventory List. Cell phones are great. Take your cell phone and take a picture of the truck, license plate and USDOT number. Tell the movers you want to get a picture with them because you are super excited about moving. They actually love that, most of the time!! Moving day can be a mix of emotions, from sad to exciting to stressful all the same time. If you have a checklist you will save time, money and eliminate a lot of the stress involved for moving day. Be prepared and ready to go. If you would like a FREE copy of a checklist, feel free to email me at CarlsonRealtor@gmail.com or call me at 561-929-8874. Stay tuned for more tips and important information regarding your Home: Inside and Out‌

Pinnacle Advertising & Marketing Group Named Agency for Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Athletics

Pinnacle Advertising & Marketing Group, one of South Florida’s fastest-growing and innovative full-service firms today announced it has been named “Agency of Record” for Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Department of Athletics.

According to Pinnacle CEO, Peter Gary, the agency will handle all aspects of media buying, creative and digital strategy along with public relations efforts. “As a Boca Raton-based agency we are delighted that one of not only the state’s, but the nation’s fastest-growing University Athletic Departments has chosen our firm to handle the bulk of its marketing activities,” said Gary. “We are particularly excited about the forthcoming FAU Owl football season under new head coach Charlie Partridge and the direction of the basketball program under Michael Curry.” “While we are delighted with the conve-

nience of Pinnacle, geography had very little to do with our decision to engage the firm,” said Reggie Garrett, FAU’s Senior Associate Athletics Director. “Pinnacle has the capabilities and experience, especially in both collegiate and professional sports, to assist us in communicating the excitement and value of FAU sports and the highly competitive Conference USA. The agency’s abilities in technology and new media are without peer and they understand marketing from millennials to baby boomers.” Garrett said Pinnacle will primarily focus on building attendance for football, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and

woman’s soccer, softball and volleyball along with building the FAU Athletic brand. The Owls first home football game is September 13 versus Tulsa at 7 p.m. The team opens with two away games against national powerhouses Nebraska and Alabama. Season tickets for FAU Football start as low as $50. All home games are played at the University’s beautiful, 30-thousand seat, oncampus facility. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS. Pinnacle Advertising & Marketing Group recently moved to new 10 thousand sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility in Boca Raton featuring its own production studios.

Kimberly Smith Named Conference USA Scholar Athlete Of The Year Former Florida Atlantic University guard Kimberly Smith has earned a 2013-14 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for women’s basketball, as announced today by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. The award is based on academic and athletic achievement as well as community service,

and presented to the top student-athlete in each of C-USA’s 20 recognized sports. Smith, a four-year member of the FAU women’s basketball team, rewrote both the FAU and C-USA record books in her final year as an Owl under head coach Kellie Lewis-Jay. She set seven individual records and led the Owls to set or tie an astounding 14 Conference USA team records. “I am extremely proud of Kim,” Lewis-Jay said. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award. She epitomizes who and what we want our program to be about. This is a great way for Kim to end her legacy at Florida Atlantic University.” Off the court, Smith was one of five players

named to the C-USA All-Academic team with a 3.608 G.P.A. She is double-majoring in social studies education and history, with extensive community service that includes volunteering at schools and senior communities around the Boca Raton area. “”We are very proud of Kim and her accomplishments both academically and athletically,” said Marlon Dechausay, director of FAU’s Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence and associate athletic director. “She embodies everything that it means to be a true student-athlete and this award further strengthens that. Kim is an outstanding leader in our department and will be an excellent teacher or coach in the future.”

Smith’s 90 three-pointers broke the FAU record of 66 and her 197 career three-pointers ranks second all-time at FAU. She made a three-pointer in 31-consecutive games and her nine three-pointers at Tulsa on Feb. 8 broke the FAU record and tied the C-USA record for most “3s” in a game. That night, she scored a career-high 33 points and led FAU to break the team’s single-season record for most three-pointers in a season. Smith’s 957 career-points ranks 10th all-time and her 460 rebounds puts her in ninth place in the FAU record books. She led C-USA and ranked 18th in the nation in three-pointers per game. Smith earned second-team AllConference USA for her efforts.

Volleyball Announces New Assistant Coach Lynn University head volleyball coach Lynze Roos has announced the hiring of Adam Milewski as the new assistant volleyball coach. Milewski replaces Jessy Roy who served the role honorably for nine seasons. His main duties will be on court training, recruiting, opponent video breakdown and overseeing statistical and video analysis. “We are fortunate to add someone with Adam’s skill and passion to our staff,” said Roos. Milewski is no stranger to the program as he has been a volunteer assistant for the Fighting Knights since 2010. During those four years, his primary duties were training middle blockers, assisting in practice and scouting. Under Milewski’s guidance Lynn had two middle blockers earn All-SSC Second Teams

accolades. For the 2012 season Roos assigned him to help run and the Lynn University Sand Volleyball Camp to go along with his assistant position. “As a volunteer, we saw the benefits of his knowledge base and expertise pay off with our team, and now bringing him on board full time will be key to developing our offense even more.” Roos added. Milewski is well known at the club level having been involved in countless teams in the South Florida area. In 2009, he received the Outstanding Coach Award for 15-16 year olds by the USA Volleyball Florida Region. Since 2005 he has been involved with the Boomers Volleyball club in Ft. Lauderdale, serving as head of recruiting this past sea-

son. His most recent graduates signed letters to play at the University of Miami, Pepperdine University, University of Northern Colorado, Miami University, Delaware State and here at Lynn. “He’s worked with much of the top talent in south Florida,” said Roos, “and he has a respected history as a court coach. I’m excited to have him on the recruiting trail for the Fighting Knights.” He is also known for beach volleyball training. In 2011, Milewski coached the 18 and under team that finished first at the USA Junior Beach Tour National Championships. From 2008-2011 Milewski led three separate 16 and under teams to top-3 finishes at USAV Florida Regional Beach Volleyball Championship and twice brought squads to

the USA Jr. Beach Tour National Championships. Before his coaching days, Milewski played middle blocker for the nationally-ranked University of Florida club team. In 2003 he graduated from Florida Atlantic University with Bachelors in Arts in Sociology. The Fighting Knights hope that this addition is what is needed to make their return to the postseason. In 2007, Lynn made their first NCAA Tournament appearances and followed up with four straight trips to the postseason. Last season the Blue & White went 1816 and 5-11 in the competitive Sunshine State Conference. Lynn returns eight letter winners, including five starters, that will be joined by the five new recruits.

Carpenter will join the incoming class after a successful high school career at Deerfield Beach High School. “We are excited to have Vanderbilt as part of our program,” said Price. “It’s nice to add a local product from a successful program that we feel will be a great addition both on and off the court.” Carpenter is a 6-foot, point guard from

Deerfield Beach, Fla. He played basketball for the Bucs and averaged 15 points and six assists per game and was named to the Broward All-Star Team and KRUEL Classic All-Tournament Team as a senior. Lynn Volleyball Announces 2014 Schedule

Lynn University volleyball head coach Lynze Roos announced the schedule for the 2014 season on Thursday. The Fighting Knights will welcome 13 opponents to the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center while playing a total of 27 contests. Lynn looks to ride the momentum from last season’s 18 victories, the most since 2010, and the second-straight season the Fighting Knights have finished over .500. “We are excited about the 2014 schedule and feel it will test our young team early,” Roos said. “We had some close matches last year that we learned from, and now I’m ready to see our squad show how hard we worked in the off-season.” The season begins with a road trip to Valdosta, Ga., on September 5, for a pair of regional matches with Albany State and Valdosta State. This is the third-straight season the Fighting Knights open the season away, and the seventh with Roos as the head coach. “Opening at Valdosta will be a terrific challenge,” added the ninth year head coach, “Albany state is a strong contender every year in the SIAC [Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference], and Valdosta is always in the hunt for the Gulf South [Conference] title. We will be pumped to open with two key region matches.” Lynn’s annual Courtyard by Marriott Tournament takes place September 11-13, where the Fighting Knights will host Clark Atlanta, Post, Fort Valley State and Colorado Christian. The host is undefeated against the field in its programs history. “We look forward to hosting the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament for the seventh year,” explained Roos. “We are honored to have return guests and feel the level of competition here will make it a fantastic event” Regional foe, and new Sunshine State Conference provisional member, Palm Beach Atlantic ends Lynn’s home front with a September 16 contest. SSC play begins on the road for the Blue &

White as the squad only hosts two matches in the first half. Barry and Nova Southeastern come to Boca Raton on September 26, and 27. “Our conference schedule is brutal night in and night out,” Roos said. “We have to be well conditioned and prepared to improve our results from last season.” Lynn takes a three-week hiatus from the de Hoernle Center with four straight road conference bouts before going to Winter Park, Fla., for a regional crossover tournament. While there, the Fighting Knights will take on Gulf South Conference foes Christian Brothers, West Alabama and Union College, new member to the GSC. “The regional crossover at Rollins will mark the halfway point in conference for us, as well as allow us to measure ourselves against the best of the Gulf South,” Roos added. Conference play resumes for the Blue & White following a midweek road match at PBA on October 22. Florida Southern and Saint Leo make the trip south on the 24th and 25th for the only home contests in the month of October. The road season comes to an end at the start of November as the Fighting Knights travel to rival-Barry on the 1st. A postseason push will be in Lynn’s favor as the Knights host their final four contests. Rollins and Tampa travel to town on the 7th and 8th before a midweek visit from Florida Tech on the 11th. November 14 marks senior day; where seniors Elyse Fleck, Nikki Haben and Lizzy Raffa will be honored before the battle with Eckerd ends the 2014 regular season. “The conclusion of the conference season allows us to be home for November,” Roos said. “I think our team will thrive in this time, hopefully pushing us to a post season berth.” This year’s recruiting class will join eight returners including five starters from the 2013 squad.

Braden Lyons Named to Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List

Florida Atlantic University senior football player Braden Lyons has been named to the Rimington Trophy 2014 Preseason Watch List. The Rimington Trophy annually honors the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I-A college football. He was also named to the Trophy’s Spring Watch List in May. Lyons, a sociology major, started every game for the Owls in 2013 at right tackle and is moving to the center position in 2014. As part of the offensive line that enabled FAU to shatter its season-high rushing record, Lyons received the offensive game ball honors against East Carolina University and Tulane University. “Braden Lyons will play a new position, and at center he is really the quarterback of the offensive line,” said Charlie Partridge, FAU’s head football coach. “He works hard to make sure those around him know what to do and ensure they are working up to a high level.” The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in the FBS. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy

has raised more than $2.5 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The 14-year-old award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, and has raised more than $100 million for cystic fibrosis research. Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the only double-winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation’s finest college interior lineman. The winner of the Rimington Trophy is awarded by determining the consensus AllAmerican center pick from three existing All-America teams. The center with the most first-team votes will be determined the winner. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015. The Rimington Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association, which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.

The Backswing A good start to your swing gives you an excellent chance of hitting a good shot. A poor start reduces the odds considerably. One of the most common is dragging the clubhead inside or behind you too quickly. This fault can usually be traced to a simple misinterpretation of one of two cliches; ‘turn away from the ball,’ or ‘swing from in to out’. The first of these causes you to turn your body aggressively early in the backswing; the second encourages you to exaggerate the ‘in part of your backswing, in the mistaken belief that this will hlep you swing in to out on the downswing. Whatever the reason, an exaggerated inside move will either create a very flat swing, or more often force you to lift your arms very steeply in order to get the club to the top of the swing.

FIX

During the first few feet of your swing, the clubhead should move gradually inside the ball to target line. But at the same time it must also stay “OUTSIDE” your hands. This cluhead out /hands in relationship sets the club on the proper plane, and encourages your arms and body to move in unison all the way to the top of the backswing. The KEY to getting this move right lies in swining the butt end of the club, as opposed to the clubhead. Moving the butt in towards your right thigh will help you to keep the clubhead outside your hands, and gets it started on the correct path. This moveaway will encourage the club to drop down on to the correct inside path from the top of the backswing. Contact Stan for more work on your golf swing. 561-699-2616
