Section 8 Housing Ban

Some West Boca communities are considering a ban on accepting renters using Section 8 government housing assistance. Prices of homes have been going up and the foreclosure rate has been declining, but some communities are still discussing the ban. Boca Winds banned Section 8 renters earlier this year and Boca Fall, Winding Lakes, and other communities have the topic up for discussion. Section 8 is a government program that aids in paying the rent of families that fall within a certain income bracket. Boca Winds Board President Paul Pontrelli said that he has heard many turn to Section 8 to avoid foreclosure and, with houses in the community costing in the $300,000 to $400,000 range, Pontrelli said that “anything is possible.” Boca Housing Authority Executive Director, Judith Aigen, thinks that communities like Boca Winds are seeing a false threat. “Section 8 houses are not $400,000-to$500,000 homes... Tips For Choosing After School Childcare

As summer comes to a close and children head back to school, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) wants to remind parents and guardians of the resources available when choosing a childcare provider for their young children. With several options available, from facilities to in-home care and individual caretakers, it’s important to do ample research when making the best choice for each individual child. “As a parent of a young child, it can be overwhelming to decide who will watch your child when you are unable to,” Interim Secretary Mike Carroll said. “Our department offers resources for parents making this important decision and works to license and inspect facilities across the state to ensure they are providing the highest quality care.” Provider Search

By Kathryn Wohlpart The amount of money spent on school shopping is estimated to up 12 percent from last year with an estimated $74.9 billion to be spent this year according to The National Retail Foundation. Backpacks, clothes, notebooks, computers — all necessities to students heading back to school — can really add up. All of that not including dorm room necessities if your student is also heading college. “Back-to-school spending is second only to the holidays, and the outlay is higher and higher each year,” said Mike Sullivan, director of education for Take Charge

The department offers a provider search of licensed facilities that can be reviewed by county and zip code in order for parents to learn about facilities located in their area and what programs are offered. Licensed providers have inspection histories included in their listings as well as details about their program – from full- to part-time care and ages of children served, to hours of operation and whether or not meals or transportation is provided. Know Your Child Care Facility Checklist When selecting a childcare facility it’s important to not only know what is required of the facility, to ensure they are complying with state laws, but also to know what to look for in a quality setting. Parents can download a one-page checklist to bring along when taking a tour in order to make

sure it’s the best choice for their child. Teacher-to-child ratios, food and nutrition information, health related requirements, and what to look for in quality caregivers, environments and activities are all covered on the checklist.

Selecting a Caregiver It’s crucial to know the background and parenting skills of anyone who is responsible for caring for a child. An overwhelming number of children are abused or neglected at the hands of non-relative caregivers – boyfriends, girlfriends or friends of the parents who may be ill-equipped to care for these young children. In partnership with more than 30 statewide agencies and organizations, DCF’s “Who’s Really Watching Your Child?” campaign offers parents free resources for choosing quality caregivers for

young children. The department’s Office of Child Care Regulation and Background Screening is statutorily responsible for the administration of child care licensing and training throughout Florida. The purpose of this program is to ensure that children are well-cared for in a safe, healthy, positive and educational environment by trained, qualified childcare staff. This program currently regulates licensed child care facilities, licensed family day care homes, licensed large family child care homes, and specialized child care facilities for the care of mildly ill children in 62 of the 67 counties in Florida. In addition, the office administers the registration of family day care homes not required to be licensed.

Back To School Saving America,“Retailers push hard in the summer months, and school budget cuts have shifted the cost of supplies to families.” “Savvy parents” can find ways to skimp on spending without skimping on supplies, according to Sullivan who offered eight tips for cutting down on costs: 1. Look around the house and find old school supplies, extra scissors, pencils, and other items that are already around the house instead of buying more. 2. Avoid impulse purchases, buy what the teachers have said will be needed for the school year and make extra purchases when a need arises.

3. Seek out the best prices by checking Dollar stores and office supply stores that often offer discounts on school essentials. 4. Coupons can cut down the cost and are often offered online, even on Facebook. Many brands offer exclusive coupons to their Facebook followers. 5. Purchase only the minimum necessities and wait until school is already in session to hit the post-back to school sales — many stores overstock on school supplies and markdown items after the first week of school. 6. Second-hand retail shops, Amazon and other online outlets, and clothing swaps

can save on clothing shopping. New-to-you clothing can satisfy a student’s need for new clothes on a budget. 7. Tax-free weekends and retailer’s student discounts are often offered around the beginning of August. Many stores, like Apple, offer student discounts or specials that can help give shoppers more for their money. 8. Including the student in the shopping process can help cut back once they have been in classes and can see what they really need for the school year.

Not long ago, I was meeting with a prospective client. During my initial review process I noticed that his account had suffered severe losses during the previous marRichard Ehrlich, CLU, ChFC, ket downturns of CFS, RichardsWeekly.com 2008. His response really took me by surprise “my broker said it’s only a paper loss”. I was flabbergasted! I asked when your account goes up, does he call and say it’s only a paper gain? I knew as soon as the words left my mouth that I had hit a nerve. You see, most people don’t have any idea of what a loss in their retirement accounts actually mean in real terms. That don’t understand that even moderate losses can wipe away many months and years of hard earned savings. Let’s take a look at an example. Suppose you saved $300,000 in a retirement account. You worked 35 years to accumulate your earned savings. We all know how important it is to make these funds last as long as possible during retirement. Naturally we want to do everything in our power to make sure that we protect our savings from sudden market losses or for that matter from any kind of market volatility. Working 35 years to save $300,000 equals about $8,500 per year or about $163 per week. Do you realize that a 1% loss on that account ($3,000) represents 18 weeks or 4 and half months of work? What would happened if you were to make a poor decision and lose 10% on that $300,000 account? ($30,000 loss). That represents three and half years of your life! And finally, let’s look at a loss of 40%, similar to downturns in 2001,02 and 2008. A loss of $120,000 which is approximately 7 and half years of work!!! So what can you do to protect your hard earned assets from these kinds of losses? It may seem overwhelming the seemingly unlimited sources for contradictory financial “advice”. Who should you trust? Who’s right? What strategy is best for you? Well, here’s what I usually tell my clients; it doesn’t have to be so complicated… assuming you are able to separate the myths and misconceptions from the facts. Step 1. Know your number. You need to figure out how much income you want to replace the day you decide to stop working. Keep in mind that people are living significantly longer and that your desired income goal must take into account a realistic inflation rate. Step 2. Create a solid and predictable income plan. This means coordinating all sources of income in retirement and knowing when to tap into each source.

Community News

From social security, pensions, investment accounts or real estate income. Make sure that the plan works not only under the best case scenario but in all scenarios. Does it account for all contingencies: long life, early death, midlife disability, market fluctuations, future taxes at uncertain rates price inflation, monetary deflation and changes of lifestyle desires. Step 3. Seek out professional advice from a qualified independent advisor who will act as a fiduciary on your behalf (translation: do what’s good for you, not them). Design and consistently monitor a low risk, low volatility portfolio which focuses on cumulative rather than average rates of return. Key point – you want to avoid significant draw downs (portfolio losses) right before and during retirement. The goal of saving for retirement is not to get the greatest rate of return. It is to have constant long term growth that can be safely used to replace your income when you retire with peace of mind. The reality is most people don’t have a plan when it comes to retirement planning. Now that you are wise to the way things really work, the next time your broker tells you it’s only a paper loss, tell him you’ve work too hard for you money and that paper losses at retirement may force you back to work. How Have Things Changed By Clay Robinson

My, how things have changed. That’s the belief I have after conversing about a recent murder allegedly committed by a person previously diagnosed with mental illness. As the conversation progressed, we spoke about how many years ago parents and family members put significant effort into maintaining a family member whose behaviors were unusual, even if they had no prior diagnosis. We reflected on our childhoods and how we occasionally encountered that neighbor who we seldom saw. Neighbors would cooperate by redirecting that person back home, or letting a family member know that their child/sibling were “out” in the community. This was done mostly in an effort to keep that person safe and avoid him/her being taken advantage of. All of this has changed, but so have many households in America. Fast forward to current family structures

where too often everyone is occupied by their own issues and interests. Many parents are out of the home due to parents working, divorce, or single parenting where there is only one adult in the home trying to maintain everything. Not casting blame or fault, but recognizing where we are socially. The demise of our families as well as our values may be contributing to the lack or care and attention our love ones receive. How is it that a family member who has a health condition that diminishes his or her ability to control their own behavior is able to cause such violent acts? Over the last 20 years or so numerous states and local governments decided to close many hospitals that offered residential care for mentally ill individuals. Who now checks on a person who is trying to live alone or monitors and engages a person who is living in the same house? Now we have “person centered planning” which

allows a mentally ill person receiving care to express realistic goals for their future. Are families also planning for their future and how are these plans synced? After many years of speaking with families, too often they are frustrated and unknowledgeable about what to do. As we reflect back over the past 30 plus years, there were very few aggressive behaviors in communities charged to a mentally ill person. Looking at the various incidents involving mentally ill persons and their ages, now, it appears that we are seeing the majority of very young individuals who seemingly lose control and go on violent rampages. When a person is in their teens or twenties they sometimes seem more receptive to undesirable aggressive behaviors. There are many older people who have suffered for many years with a mental illness and are now in their forties, fifties etc… who are apparently less likely to engage in

www.bocaratontribune.com

dangerous community behaviors. Could it be that the persons in their forties and fifties today had different parental and family involvement which perhaps produced a more subdued mentally ill person? Did we handle family problems better years ago because we took the time and gave the effort? Has the changing of the home environment contributed to many of the social tragedies we’re experiencing in our schools, work places and community at large? As families continue with their own issues, we offer very little for the issues of the mentally ill. This observation is offered as a view point to try to encourage and support those who need explanation for change. Medication for improved mental health can only do so much, people with illnesses want and need family and friends. I know personally that everyone wants to be viewed as normal.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

A Dangerous Path To Follow While I was speaking with Drayton, a highly successful Christian businessman, we began reflecting on the importance of having the right motives in business. As we talked, Drayton told me about a meeting he had the previous day with a young man. When Drayton asked this individual about what his dreams and aspirations were, the young man quickly replied, "I want to make as much money as possible, quickly." Immediately Drayton replied, "I've heard that answer before - and it usually doesn't work out well. You would be better off finding something that customers need and focus on that." As Drayton commented on this encounter, it reminded me of an admonition the apostle Paul wrote to his younger follower, Timothy. In 1 Timothy 6:10 the apostle presents this warning: "For the love of

money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." This passage does not state money is inherently evil, or that it is wrong to strive to earn money to provide for one's needs or even additional things that fit more into the category of desires rather than a critical need. However, money can become an idol, consuming our affections. It turns into a snare when it becomes the dominating goal of our lives, rather than considering how best to use our innate gifts, talents, skills and experience to perform work we enjoy, and to serve other people in the process. Both Drayton and the apostle Paul realized the pursuit of money can be dangerous, making us vulnerable to temptation of many kinds. We all can think of prominent

business and professional leaders that have succumbed to greed, bribery, deception, making false promises, and various forms of unethical behavior. The quest for wealth also could lead us to associate with questionable individuals who promise to "help" us to achieve our financial objectives. As Drayton suggested to the young man, it would be far better to pursue one's passion. If you do something well and find great enjoyment in doing it, chances are financial rewards will follow. But even if they do not, you will still find satisfaction in a job well done. Here are some other things the Bible says about money and making it the focus of our work: Divided allegiances do not work. Some business and professional people might claim that in their pursuit of riches, God's work will be a beneficiary. Jesus said, how-

ever, "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money" (Matthew 6:24). How we handle money reflects spiritual values. If someone entrusted you with a small responsibility and you failed, would you expect to be trusted with greater responsibilities? The same holds true with our use of money. "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?" (Luke 16:11).

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Your Other Potential Best Friends! It’s a well-known affirmation, that dogs are the best friends any human can have. Their loyalty, their playfulness, and their constant presence by the side of their owner are among several other appreciated qualities they bring to one’s life. Amazing is also what trained canines can do for a person destitute of good vision or afflicted by a degenerative malady, as well as the services they render to officers of the law in a variety of situations! Indeed, no one can deny the loyalty of such animals and the consistency of the friendship they are capable of offering to members of the households they occupy, almost as if they were family! Another potential best friend which is not viewed as universally as a dog is a book. It’s sad, when such is the case, because books are indeed friends available twentyfour hours any day to anyone seeking their company. Regardless of its age, a book has a lot to offer, regardless of the language in which it was written. It can provide knowledge, instill wisdom, expand the mind, augment one’s vocabulary, and even bring therapy to its reader, regardless of the subject of its content! I never forget the experience I once had of talking with a groom and his best man, while we waited for the call to move to the

area where the wedding I was to officiate would occur. The best man, a high school drop-out, boasted of the fact that he had never read a book in his life, nor he ever planned to. It was a sad statement to hear, for it denoted a tragic reality more present in our society than anyone would like to acknowledge as true. People who had bad experiences in school seem to associate books only with school work, not recognizing the value that other kinds of reading can bring to anyone’s personal growth and total development as a person. Because my entire life has been and continues to be enriched beyond measure by my love for books, I can only recommend this tool to my readers, regardless of age. In case, no day goes by without some hours being devoted to reading, to enlarge my mind, to accumulate new knowledge and feelings, and to be able to look at life from additional angles which reading opens up. Wisdom does not come only from books, entertainment is not limited to the printed page, knowledge is to be found beyond reading materials. At the same time, books will never disappoint you in offering you the same and much more! It shall always remain a legitimate best friend to those who keep their company!

West Boca Section 8 Housing Ban

Continue from page 1 Section 8 tenants are good tenants and should be treated like any other tenant,” said Aigen. The housing assistance program has restrictions on the cost of rent a tenant

can choose, making most houses in the communities discussing the ban out of the budget for these renters. Though, Aigen said it is not impossible for a section 8 tenant to find a house with a high value. The landlord would have to be renting the home at a deeply discounted price, but according to Aigen some section 8 tenants have found expensive homes with in the price range. While banning Section 8 renters is not illegal, law experts say that the ban could be spun as a form of discrimination. Gary Singer, a Sunrise real estate attorney, said that the ban could be overlapped with claims of discrimination based on race, national origin, gender, number of children, or disability and that he would not recommend an “outright ban.”

Fourth-Annual White Coats-4-Care Reception Raises More Than $60,000

More than 220 civic, business, healthcare and community leaders along with several current and incoming students attended the recent fourth-annual White Coats-4-Care (WC4C) Reception that raised more than $60,000 to embrace and “dress and equip” FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine’s newest class for healthcare career success. Founded, sponsored and presented by Kaye Communications, Inc., the event was co-hosted by the new Waterstone Resort & Marina that provided bountiful hors d’oeuvres and themed food stations, wine, and champagne in the resort’s penthouse level Atlantic Ballroom with sweeping views of Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal and Lake Boca. Sponsors included Boca Raton Magazine/JES Publishing, Boca Raton Tribune and Oral Facial Implant Center of Boca Raton. Admission to the reception was a donation for underwriting white coats, need-based scholarship funds, named seats in the medical education auditorium, and/or named medical school student scholarship funds to support the incoming class to the first and only medical school in Palm Beach County. The largest donation was a $10,000 need-based scholarship

Boca Life & Arts

fund presented by Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton whose mission is support the enhancement of community health and wellness. With this year’s proceeds, the annual WC4C receptions have generated more than $210,000 in funds to benefit incoming classes. Guests were welcomed by Jon and Bonnie Kaye followed by a program including an update on the medical school achievements by its dean Dr. David Bjorkman, words of appreciation for community support from FAU President John W. Kelly, Ph.D., and personal stories shared by two new incoming medical students, who are FAU graduates and scholarship recipients, on what drew them to their career path as future physicians. Guests included a dedicated cross-section of the greater Boca Raton community, including donors; sponsors; physicians; FAU Foundation and medical school leadership including Dr. Michael Dennis, chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Board; representatives from partnering hospitals; Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie, Deputy Mayor Constance Scott, and Council Member Robert Weinroth; State Representative Bill Hager, Greater

Boca Raton Chamber President Troy McLellan, and former Boca Raton Mayor Susan Whelchel who served during the development and launch of the medical school. Prior to the reception, a private lecture and Q&A for healthcare providers was sponsored by Dr. Dennis on “Modernizing Medicine: Building Software, Transforming Healthcare” by Modernizing Medicine Co-founders Daniel Cane, Chief Executive Officer and an FAU Board of Trustees member, and Michael Sherling, M.D., M.B.A., Chief Medical Officer. For the fourth year, the WC4C “awareness and fund” raising reception was again the first in the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce’s month-long “2014 Greater Boca Raton Festival Days” that pairs nonprofit Boca Chamber members together with for-profit Chamber members to raise awareness and vital funds for the nonprofit member’s philanthropic efforts. For Chamber Trustee Member Kaye Communications, a South Florida-based strategic integrated marketing and public relations firm, pairing with FAU’s new medical school was a natural fit. Firm President and Chief Strategist Bonnie S. Kaye serves on

the boards of directors of both the Chamber and the FAU Foundation, and firm Chief Operating Officer and Marketing Strategist Jon Kaye was a founding member of the Dean’s Advisory Board of the FAU medical school. Following the week, in annual tradition, the 64 young men and women of the incoming class received their white coats that represent integrity, compassion and trust and symbolizes their shared commitment to serve patients and their own oath (code of conduct) that they recited in unison and will follow throughout medical school and when they are physicians. The incoming class has a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and an average MCAT score of 33, which is above the national average. Most of the major colleges in Florida are represented including 10 students from FAU. Other students in the class attended undergraduate institutions such as Boston College; Duke University; Emory University; Johns Hopkins; Rensselaer Polytechnic; Stanford University; University of California at Berkeley, San Diego and San Francisco; University of Pittsburgh; Vanderbilt University; Yale University and others. Yesterday I learned from daughter, Melanie in New York that one of my dearest friends was murdered by her husband who then commited suicide. I am very distraught to hear one of the most wonderful, kind and sweet person”s I have ever known was taken so tragically. I worked with Joan Bramhall at the office of Congressman Dean Gallo of Parsippany, New Jersey and we became friends many years ago. Joan and I were room mates at the Inauguration of Ronald Reagan in Washington, D.C. and had a wonderful friendship that lasted for decades. She was the former Chairwoman of the Morris County Republican Party and the Morris County Clerk up until her retirement in December. Morris County , New Jersey Police found two bodies at the lavish home of the Bramhall’s in Denville , New Jersey. Joan’s an apparent homicide and her husband John an apparent suicide.

When Joan walked into a room all eyes were on her. She lit up the room with her fabulous smile. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding to my husband, Bob 16 years ago at the Madison Hotel in Madison, New Jersey an she attended the wedding of my daughter, Melanie a few year’s ago. She will be sorely missed by me and all of those who loved her.

“Calvary” Challenging, Disturbing, Bleakly Funny

“Calvary” is a provocative, disturbing, yet at times darkly funny movie anchored by a bravura performance by the brilliant Irish actor Brendan Gleeson. The title should have been a dead giveaway. Brenden Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle, a truly good priest in this parallel parable about the contemporary Catholic Church by writer-director John Michael McDonagh. John Michael’s brother Martin McDonagh wrote and directed “In Bruges,” which also starred Brendan Gleeson, and John Michael’s previous film, “The Guard,” also starred Gleeson. Father James is no ordinary priest. He was married and has a lovely, troubled daughter Fiona (Kelly Reilly) whom he is trying to lift from the depths of depression. Father James became a priest when his wife died. The fate of Father James is foreshadowed at the outset. Father James hears the confession of a man who says he was sexually abused by a priest when he was a boy. Father James listens attentively, and then the man gets to the point. “I am going to kill you,” he says. “I am going to kill you not because you are a bad

Boca Life & Arts

priest but because you are a good priest. You have one week to get your affairs in order.” So begins a countdown with each day denoted. It seems that everyone in this beautiful little seaside village near Sligo in the west of Ireland is mightily messed up. Butcher Jack Brennan (Chris O’Dowd) is a cuckold whose wife Veronica (Oria O’Rourke) is, to put it bluntly, a slut. Her current lover is an African auto mechanic named Simon (Isaach De Bankole). The younger parish priest, Father Leary (David Wilmot) is a callow, shallow man. Michael Fitzgerald (Dylan Moran), the richest man in town, is a mean, miserable drunk, whose wife and children have abandoned him. The constable, Inspector Stanton, carries on with young male prostitutes. The town physician, Dr. Frank Harte (Aiden Gillen) is a bitter atheist with contempt for victims. The token American is an expatriate writer (M. Emmet Walsh) who is old and at the end of his career and contemplating suicide. If this is a comedy it is as dark as it can get. If you have even a passing knowledge of The Bible, you know who Father James represents. With sin, chaos and wickedness all around him, Father James is as calm, serene and dignified as that figure. One thing for certain, Brendan Gleeson is nothing short of an Irish national treasure. Rating:  1/2 stars

Customer Service: The One Non-Negotiable Years ago I learned a universal business truth we all would be wise to never forget: It is easier to retain customers and clients you already have than to attract new ones. This principle holds true for both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations. And the best way of retaining customers is through consistently excellent customer service. I was reminded of this recently when my wife and I had a very disheartening experience at a restaurant we have often patronized. As we arrived, two of the staff members were discussing a problem with a coworker. When she realized their conversation was loud enough to be overheard, the hostess hastily apologized. The young man guiding us to our seat was pleasant, but our server was perhaps the worst we have ever had anywhere. He was abrupt, did not smile, seemed inattentive and frankly, made us feel as if we were intruding on his time. I will not bore you with the details of our poor service, except to say this was the first time I can remember being anxious to finish our meal and leave the restaurant. Unlike as is so common today, I did not turn to social media to register my displeasure. Instead, I went to the restaurant’s online customer comment page and described our dismal experience. Within an hour a manager from the establishment called to apologize, ask for more specifics, and then insist he would “make it right” by sending us a certificate for a complimentary meal. That seemed reasonable enough, but weeks later we have yet to receive anything or hear any more from the manager or anyone else from the restaurant. So we not only received poor service during a dinner outing we had been anticipating, but also had cause to doubt the integrity of

the restaurant’s management. If you want an example of bad customer service, there it is. Now we do not plan to ever return, despite good experiences in the past. I would contrast that with companies I have consulted with where excellence in customer service is their top priority. They strive to exceed customer expectations if possible, and when there is a problem, they give the matter immediate, full attention, determined to do the right thing every time. How do we succeed in doing that? The Bible offers some timeless recommendations that work, regardless of one’s spiritual convictions: Caring for others as you would expect to be cared for. In creating a customercentered culture, a good question to ask is, “How would I want to be treated?” As Jesus told His followers, “Do to others what you would have them do to you“(Luke 6:31). Giving is the surest way to receive what you want and also to achieve your objective. Giving, whether materially or in terms of service, provides its own reward – customer satisfaction, loyalty, and one’s own sense of having performed a job well. “…remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). Put other people first. When customers realize they are recipients of the best service and attention possible, perhaps even more than they had expected, repeat business is virtually guaranteed. “…in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Three Years? “The law is an ass” originates in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that “the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”. Picture this: The professional young lady after a few years realizes that her husband is a drunk. Well, no, not just a Saturday night, Sunday football afternoon drunk but an alcoholic; a person who would rather make love to a Bud Light than to her. Best of times and worst she finds herself pregnant, and decides to hold on a bit to see if their little girl would encourage husband to changes his ways. Surprise, surprise…it did not. A divorce ensued. The parties fought over child care issues. The wife sought and got temporary exclusive parenting rights and the husband had supervised visitation only because of his alcoholism and the Judge’s fear of the husband driving his car with the child a passenger. The final hearing in the divorce case was set to start in about a month. The Husband’s lawyer had withdrawn for lack of payment. Word came though the Husband’s camp that he had fallen, cracked his head and was in a coma. The trial was cancelled; the husband in limbo as was the wife. “When can I get divorce,” she asked. After a brief visit with our Trust and Estates partner to confirm what I already

knew I had to tell her that if her husband remained in a coma, or became mentally incompetent as the result of his fall she would have to wait for three years after he was officially found to be incompetent to get divorced. I concluded that if he were to become incompetent he would have a guardian who could negotiate a marital settlement agreement with her, but the marriage could not be ended for three years under a Florida statute. I also told her that while she could bring an Incompetency case to court herself she could not be the guardian because they were in a divorce case against one another. Money was thin all around and not the real issue in the divorce case. The woman had a job with a reasonable paycheck but could not afford to start another case in probate court. All told she appears to be between a rock and a hard place. It also appears that there should be a more flexible path for a person in her situation, albeit unusual, to be able to go ahead with her life. Her income disables her from getting assistance from the local Legal Aid office. Who knows what happens next. Michael H. 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. Put a pill of your store bought brand of omega-3 in the freezer overnight. Then put Omax3® Ultra Pure TM in the freezer overnight.

Prevention Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Omax3® Ultra Pure TM , have decided to giveaway 1,000 boxes in a massive initiative to get consumers to try it.

The difference is clear. The store bought brand will be cloudy, even a solid white. This is caused by the bad fats and toxins solidifying, which your body doesn’t need. Omax3 ® will remain clear, which equals safety and effectiveness.

“We believe one dose of this high performance 1.5g of omega-3 will change your opinion of fish oil with the dramatic results,” says Terry Tormey, CEO of Prevention Pharmaceuticals. Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. Homes Inside and Out By Joshua Carlson

Looming Home Equity Resets On the Horizon decrease in the value of your home. If you have an outstanding balance that is planning to come due try to negotiate with the bank to get a reduction. Or sell your home and try to avoid the foreclosure process. The banks are banking on the unemployment rate which has decreased and as Home Values have risen consumers have a better exit strategy. Could this be the pin prick that pops the miniature Bubble? You don’t want to be the homeowner sitting there like a deer in the headlights if you do. Be prepared and check your HELOC terms and when your draw period ends as it is better to be proactive than be caught off guard. If you are confused about what your documents say and what to do next there are real estate professionals out there to help you out. Thank you and stay tuned for more information about your home.

Customers with home equity lines of credit (HELOCs) are expected to see their payments rise in the coming years. Nearly 8 million customers had lines of credit which have a 10-year draw period, allowing borrowers to tap into their credit and pay only the interest on the loan during the draw period. Many of these loans have draw periods which ends at the beginning of next year in which they have to begin paying both interest and principal on the outstanding balances. According to the TransUnion study more than half of the loans have balances of $100,000 or more. Will this mean more short sales and foreclosures? It all depends on the banks positioning. If the banks are cooperative with homeowners and work a plan with them then NO I do not think will this be that big of a deal. But if they are not, BEWARE. There will be more foreclosures and short sales on the market and potentially a

Crocker Partners Buys Office Building for $76M

Hot Dog Concept JJ's Opens at FAU

By Jason Schwartz

By CRA News Service

Premium hot dog concept JJ’s Red Hots is opening a unit at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton as part of a partnership with Chartwells Higher Education, a division of Compass Group North America, which manages campus dining at FAU. “JJ’s is impressive in every aspect of its business and we are thrilled to add them to our portfolio of category leaders,” says Nicole Hatfield, director of brand development for Compass. “They are a hip brand and their commitment to quality and excellence is unmatched. We are sure they are going to be an immediate hit at Florida Atlantic University." “JJ’s is extremely excited for this opportunity as the value and portability of our core products will resonate very well with students at FAU," says Owner/Founder Jonathan Luther. "I can already envision students here eating our hot dogs while zip-

ping around campus on their skateboards. The high energy of this setting is right in our sweet spot, because we like to have fun with our brand and we don’t take ourselves too seriously—except when it comes to making world class hot dogs and sausages.” “We want to engage FAU students in the creative process and ‘crowdsource’ ideas using social media," adds JJ’s director of marketing and brand development, Brandy Newton. "We think this will also help with our marketing efforts as 100 percent of the student body is engaged in social media and online activities." JJ’s has designed an FAU DOG with pineapple salsa, onions and cilantro-lime cream and will be officially named with the help of its more than 30,000 students. The unit is located in the FAU food court and is open weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Chambers Names D2CCA South Region Scholar-Athlete

On Wednesday, the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association announced its CCA Regional Scholar-Athlete. The Sunshine State Conference (SSC) swept the South Region awards with Lynn University women’s golfer Ellen Chambers taking top honors on the women’s side while Florida Southern College’s Robbie Swan earned men’s honors. The SSC swept these awards for the second consecutive

year. Chambers was a member of the No. 1 Lynn women’s golf team, which won back-toback national championships in 2013 and 2014. She also helped lead the Fighting Knights to their first-ever SSC Women’s Golf Championship in 2014. The international relations major held a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and was name the 2014 NCAA Elite 89 Award recipient at the Division II women’s golf championship in May. She was runner-up for the same award in 2013. Chambers was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team. Most recently, the senior was named the 2014 Lynn University Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Chambers earned the 2014 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional individual medalist after winning with a three-round score of 218 (+2). She was named 2014 WGCA All-America Honorable Mention and to the WGCA All-South

Region team. Lynn finished the season undefeated against all NCAA Division II opponents and won a Division II record 11 tournaments. The Fighting Knights tied a SSC record with seven consecutive tournament victories during 2014. Swan is a three-time CSCAA Scholar AllAmerican, a four-time member of the SSC Spring Commissioner’s Honor Roll and a two-time NCAA Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award winner. Having a 3.86 grade-point average in business, Swan was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team after earning a spot on the Academic AllDistrict 5 At-Large First team in 2014. It is his second-straight Academic All-America At-Large accolade. For the seventh-straight year the SSC has lead Division II conference in Academic Success Rate (ASR)—the NCAA’s measurement of academic success. Both Swan and

Chambers were named the 2013-14 SSC Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Chambers was also picked as the conference’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. A total of 16 student-athletes, a male and female from each of the eight regions, received the accolade. The commissioners from the regions that comprise the Division II basketball alignment selected the regional winners. To be nominated for consideration, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.0 career cumulative grade-point average and possess outstanding athletic credentials. This award, sponsored by the Division II CCA, provides the opportunity for Division II to highlight the extraordinary achievements of its student-athletes. Division II CCA President and Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Steve Murray, noted that the award showcases the academic and athletic talent at the NCAA Division II level.

Golf Life in boca By Stan Moore

Swinging The Arms, Part 2

Send a condolenc gift as a Living Tribute Create a free swinging arm motion. It’s easier if you think of yourself standing in the center of a giant arc, or semicircle, with the ball on the perimeter of the circle. Your arms swing back and forth along that arc, and, as nearly as possible, you want to duplicate the backswing arc on the downswing. Ideally, you want the arc as wide as you can make it, because that makes it easier to repeat, swing to swing. To maximize your arc, feel “wide” as your swing your arms back. Watch how your left arm extends naturally as you swing he club back. The arms job at address was to establish a position far enough from the body so that there is room now at impact for the lower body to turn out of the way, slide forward

and straighten up. At the same time the arms must be relaxed enough to extend at impact. Feel as though your arms get 6 inches longer. Unless your arms are hanging freely and devoid of tension, it can’t happen. Here is a simple exercise to give you the feel of the arms before and during impact. Pretend that there is a golf ball in front of you on the ground. Now throw an imaginary ball at that ball. You can try it with real balls outdoors. The exercise creates proper sequence of arm and body movement. Notice how the lower body naturally clears as the arm makes its throw? For more information on swinging the arms contact Stan at 561-699-2616.
