Boca Raton Police Department Receives Accreditation Award from CALEA Continue from page 1

The process enhances community understanding of the Department and its role in the community as well as its goals and objectives. “Not unlike hospitals and schools, police agencies seeking accreditation strive to meet and exceed specific industry standards,” wrote Boca Police Chief Dan Alexander. “We then submit themselves to a rigorous

review by independent assessors.” Since 1987, the BRPD has been accredited by CALEA eight times. The department achieved Flagship Agency status in 2008 and Accreditation with Excellence in 2011 and 2014, which was a first for Florida agencies. In 2005, the Department received the Meritorious Accreditation award; and in 2008 it received both Meritorious and Flagship distinctions from CALEA.

Because the Department is accountable to accrediting commissions, it is compelled to operate within specific guidelines. The Department must stay in compliance with the standards set forth by the accrediting commissions in order to retain its accreditation. By adopting accreditation standards, the Department assures that its services continue to be excellent.

“This was a great opportunity to interact with world-class musicians from around the globe and to expand our community outreach.” Kula, an accordionist, conductor and composer, began fusing world music genres with centuries-old Klezmer music in FAU Libraries’ print music collection in 1996. To showcase the music, or to move it from the shelves to the stage, Kula founded KCO, the only professional ensemble-in-residence at an academic institution in the U.S. At both Jewish music festivals in Canada, KCO energized patrons with music from “Beyond the Tribes,” its first award-winning independently produced CD in 2007 and “KlezmerOlogy,” the group’s second CD, which was released in 2012. Kula and Chaim Rubinov, KCO’s trumpeter, composed more than a dozen new arrangements for the tour. Eric Stein, artistic director for the Ashkenaz Festival, the largest festival of Jewish music and culture, said KCO was one of the most talked about bands at the festival, which drew 60,000 attendees and 200 musicians from 12 countries. “In such a dense field it is a supreme ac-

complishment for any participating artist to stand out above the field, but Aaron and KCO achieved that with their performances at the festival,” said Stein. “They had packed audiences for their shows and feedback was universally positive.” While in Toronto, Kula also presented “Black Sabbath: Blues and Jews,” a lecture that explores the musical relationship between blacks and Jews, and KCO presented Klez4Kidz, a dramatic reading of the award-winning children’s book “Mendel’s Accordion.” The goal of the Montreal Jewish Music Festival, which featured acts from 15 countries, was to recruit bands that would stretch people’s imagination of what defines Jewish music. KCO’s distinctive Latin-Klezmer sound stood out as danceable, brash and fun, said Jason Rosenblatt, the festival’s artistic director. “KCO’s show is replete with lush horns, dexterous improvisations and a supremely gifted rhythm section that morphed seamlessly from mambos and tangos to bulgars and freylachs,” said Rosenblatt. “Thanks Aaron Kula and the KCO for bringing Montrealers a sweet taste of south Florida.”

Ownership in Relationships By Clay Robinson

“Why did you hit me?” I hit you because I don’t want you to leave me! Those words and the rationale provided are common in relationships everywhere. It occurs with both male and female aggressors and it all starts with ownership. I believe ownership is a natural mindset that is developed early in our infancy. A one year old will reach for your belongings and cry or hit you to get it. We see children playing at two or three years of age start to fight and bite for something that doesn’t belong to them and most of us have witnessed a toddler striking out if another tries to touch his or her belongings. These behaviors exhibited early in life are possibly the foundation to selfish or violent behavior within our relationships. On numerous occasions I have had discussions about the mindset associated with the words “my” and “mine” and the ownership

that is attached to these words. Words that indicate ownership definitely have multiple meanings that can vary from person to person. I want you to search your mental history about incidents in which a person reacted aggressively or assaultive because of their view point regarding what he or she felt they owned. Now I’m not referring to property you own, I’m speaking of the ownership we express regarding our mates in relationships. At almost every age, we can and will display aggressive, violent or vindictive behaviors when we feel that what is ours in a relationship is leaving or gone. Many families have experienced the tremendous pain of losing a loved one or someone being severely injured physically by a man or woman who has taken “my” or “mine” to the extreme. Many of us have often used this word, but the vast majority of us have

not let it get out of control where someone has been hurt physically or emotionally. Why do we choose to hurt each other because of the ownership concept we have when we are in a relationship? Is it that we view our relationships in the same manner as our material possessions? The largest purchases in our lives usually come with some type of paperwork that confirms ownership and gives us rights that prevent others from infringing on our ownership. Is a marriage license the same as a deed or a title? The law has supported our defense of ownership to a certain degree, based more on the personal threat than the property value. Your car comes with a title, your home comes with a deed and marriage comes with a license. What does that marriage license mean to a man or a woman and what are they entitled to? Have you ever considered the concept of ownership

www.bocaratontribune.com

that might come with a marriage license? When you enter into a relationship will you encounter aggression? Will your mate take the concept of “my wife” or “my husband” to a violent level? Should you have a conversation about what “my” or “mine” means to your significant other? What about their previous relationships? How did those relationships end and how did they feel about it? These questions are very relevant today. We are seeing too many incidents of extreme behavior with deadly results. No one has the right to hurt another human being or even an animal because they have a piece of paper. If you don’t understand or can’t control your behavior you should reexamine what “you’re mine” means to you, because realistically, you should never want to hurt what you believe is yours.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

Effective Leaders Impart A Bigger Vision When my daughter, Megan, said she desired to become an occupational therapist. I did not understand this vocation or what such work would entail. That was before we attended an open house at Kansas University Medical Center’s Graduate Program for Occupational Therapy. The program director first greeted all of the parents and prospective students, then proceeded to inform us that an occupational therapist’s job is “to discover the dreams of the patient, then help them overcome their challenges to achieve those dreams.” I had to marvel at this powerful picture of the impact an occupational therapist can have. The program director must have been a wise leader, because she could have described daily duties and would have been accurate in detailing what an occupational therapist does. Instead, she inspired and encouraged these students with a vision for changing lives. And in the process, she gained the support of parents who felt

great enthusiasm about the meaningful roles their children could play in people’s lives. We see many biblical examples of the principle of inspiring followers with a great vision for the future. In Deuteronomy 3, for example, God said to Moses, “But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” God was not just giving Joshua an assignment – He was imparting vision for leading the Israelites. A savvy leader inspires others with a vision bigger and more important than the specific responsibilities involved in performing the job. You might know the story of the brick mason observed chipping at a large piece of granite, working as part of a large construction crew in Europe. When a passerby asked what he was doing, the mason replied, “I’m building a cathedral!” That man had vision.

The challenge for us as leaders is in communicating this vision, enabling people to see their work as bigger than themselves. It starts with us – you cannot give away something you do not possess, so we need to have the greater vision ourselves before we can pass it on to others. That is why I was so impressed by the description of what an occupational therapist actually does. We spend so much of our time in business focused on the bottom line, striving for profits, that we often lose sight of a greater vision. In your company, you know the products and services you provide. But what is your vision – how can your business make a positive, meaningful difference in the lives of people that you touch? Here are two biblical examples. Make clear what you expect them to do. When Jesus initially approached His future disciples, He needed to convince them to leave their accustomed work as fishermen. He simply gave them their new job descrip-

tion: “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Communicate how lives can be changed. At the close of His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ made clear to His followers what He expected them to do: “…go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”(Matthew 28:19-20). POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Use the Life You Still Have! If you think your life is over, you can be pretty sure that it is not. If you can read or hear these words, you are most definitely alive! What you face may be unbearable at the moment, you may have lost enthusiasm for any new challenge, and your joy of living may be at an all-time low. Yet, even then, you are still breathing, and something can legitimately be expected of you! Just think: as long as there is life in you, some kind of accomplishment remains open to you. It may be different in nature

from past activities, your lack of strength, or your decreased health may not permit you to tackle certain challenges. However, you can renew your strength by positively thinking of something new whereby to make a valid contribution to fellow humans, even if in your own mind this exceeds your powers and abilities to deliver. Keep in mind that your capacity to think that your days have ended on earth, is in itself an indication that this is not so. You just need to refocus and seek wisdom, determining what you can still contribute.

Don’t think of what you did in years gone by but just on what you can still do now! It is to be expected that one’s zest for life and in life decreases, on account of illness, due to advancing age, diminished abilities, and many additional normal obstructions or previously unknown limitations. Nevertheless, you can still open your eyes each new day, and boldly inquire: “What can I attempt today that can make a positive difference to other lives?” It is not the magnitude of an act, nor the abundance of a deed that will make it significant. If it

stems from a sincere heart, and it’s done in the best way one can, unquestionably the impact will surpass one’s expectations. Don’t allow any paralysis of thought or action to hinder you in seeing a dream fulfilled, and leading a positive effort to completion. You are still alive and you can do it, with God’s help. So, use creatively the life you still have. It will do you and others more good than you can imagine!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Caring Community Helps FAU Professor Survive Two Bouts Of Pancreatic Cancer In what his physicians have called a “miraculous recovery,” Steven Lewis, Ph.D., a visiting professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, has beaten all odds surviving two bouts of pancreatic cancer. Lewis was first diagnosed with the disease in 2007, and again almost three years later when the cancer metastasized to his liver. He has persevered major surgeries, radiation treatments and chemotherapy. With the highest mortality rate of all major cancers, pancreatic cancer patients have less than a five percent survival rate within five years of diagnosis, and 74 percent of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. with an estimated 46,420 Americans diagnosed each year. Pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers for which survival has not improved substantially over nearly 40 years. In recent years, pancreatic cancer has received considerable attention because many well-known individuals such as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, actor Patrick Swayze and opera singer Luciano Pavarotti have died from the disease. Following the surgery to remove the cancer in his liver, Lewis has been cancer free and in excellent health for more than four years. Along with his outstanding team of physicians, Lewis credits his ability to maintain an extremely positive attitude with saving his life. As an exercise physiologist, researcher and teacher, he leads a vigorous life, exercising regularly to maintain a high level of physical fitness and health. “A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer presents a terrible emotional burden for patients and their families,” said Lewis. “It is a better

choice to face the mortal threat of this illness squarely than to react with negativity, complaint and despair. Whether individual patients survive or not, maintaining a positive attitude can help patients and their families beat the emotional devastation of pancreatic cancer.” Lewis and his family experienced numerous health twists and turns during his long battle with cancer and he believes that if they were not able to stay positive, their emotional devastation would likely have drained his physical ability to fight the cancer. In addition to their upbeat approach to this life-threatening illness, they used CaringBridge.org, an internet blog for severe medical conditions to develop a strong emotional support community. Lewis strongly believes that maintaining a highly positive attitude can provide already weak patients with more focused energy to fight off their disease and potentially improve their survival. Inspired by the community support he received, Lewis has just published a book called “The Ripple Effect: How a Positive and Caring Community Helped Save My Life.” He wrote the book to help others who may be facing adverse health conditions and other traumatic situations. “Virtually everyone, at some time in life, will endure serious life changing experiences such as a life threatening illness, injury, loss of a loved one or divorce,” said Lewis. “During such trying times, a positive attitude can help us think clearly, be solution oriented and ultimately prevail.” “The Ripple Effect: How a Positive and Caring Community Helped Save My Life” is published by iUniverse and is also available on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles’ websites.

Boca Resident, Nebraska Kicker Breaks Clavicle in Crash

By Jason Schwartz

West Boca High School graduate and Nebraska junior kicker Mauro Bondi broke his collarbone and was hospitalized after losing control of his motorcycle in north Lincoln recently, police said. Bondi, 21, failed to negotiate a curve on his 2004 Suzuki and struck a curb, according to the accident report. Bondi, transported to an area hospital by a roommate, told police he thought he was traveling about 45 mph. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor.

Authorities cited Bondi for negligent driving and operating a motorcycle without a valid license. According to the police report, Bondi, who was wearing a helmet, injured his left shoulder and upper arm region. He was treated for a broken collarbone and multiple abrasions at the hospital, police said. The motorcycle, a 2004 Suzuki GSK-R600, was totaled, according to the report. Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini released a short statement about the accident Friday, Sept. 19: “Mauro Bondi was involved in a motorcycle accident on Thursday evening and suffered a broken clavicle in addition to bumps and bruises. We wish him the best for a quick recovery.” Bondi entered the 2014 season with hopes of earning the starting place-kicker job for the Cornhuskers. A season ago he ranked among the national leaders in touchbacks with 48 and has been an integral part of Nebraska’s kicking game again this season. The junior converted his only field-goal attempt this season, and is still competing with freshman Drew Brown for the top job. But Bondi’s made key contributions as the team’s kickoff specialist. The Huskers have recorded 14 touchbacks on kickoffs, which ranks eighth nationally (Bondi’s kicked 12 of those). Nebraska ranked sixth nationally in touchbacks thanks to Bondi’s 48 kickoffs into the end zone last season.

Great Police Work Leads to Arrest of Robbery Suspect Shortly before 5:00 am Saturday morning Boca Raton Police responded to a reported unarmed robbery in the area of 1999 North Federal Highway. At the scene, officers met with the 63 year old victim who said he was sitting on the bench waiting for a bus when he was approached by a man asking for a cigarette. When the victim told him he didn’t smoke, the man asked for money. The victim told him he didn’t have any money. The man then sat down on the bench and quickly grabbed the victim’s backpack. A struggle ensued and the victim fell to the ground as the suspect took off with his backpack. A short time later an officer found what appeared to be the stolen backpack behind 1921 North Federal Highway. Because this location is near the Boca Inn, investigators checked to see if a man matching the suspect’s description was registered as a

guest. It was quickly determined that he was located at the hotel. Investigators then conducted a photo lineup at the hospital where the victim as being treated for minor injuries. He confirmed that one of the people in the lineup was the one responsible for the robbery. Officers knocked repeatedly on the door, but neither the suspect nor his roommates would answer. Since 11:00 am is checkout time, officers waited. The suspect came out and agreed to be questioned by police. Back at the Boca Raton Police Services Department, the suspect, Christopher Harshbarger, said he remembered sitting on the bench with the victim but was too drunk at the time to remember anything else. He said he did have a backpack that didn’t belong to him but didn’t remember taking it. Harsbarger was charged with Robbery by Sudden Snatching. www.bocaratontribune.com

City Employee Facing Charges of Aggravated Child Abuse

By CRA News Service

BOCA RATON - A city employee was charged with aggravated child abuse after he allegedly punched a 15-year-old girl in the face, according to an arrest report. Mark Anthony Chase, who worked as a groundskeeper, told the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s deputies that his wife hit the girl Sept. 14 after they found inappropriate material on the teenager’s cell phone. But Ericka Chase later told a deputy that it was her husband, listed on the arrest report as 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, who punched the girl and left her with two black eyes. The report says the girl was taken to the

emergency room for treatment. Palm Beach County School District officials said Chase was a coaching assistant for the JV team last school year at Seminole Ridge High School. They say his background check came back clean at that time. The district says they have a strict process for all 40,000 volunteers in Palm Beach County Schools. Each year, they do new background checks for each volunteer. “If you had some sort of issue come up over the summer, you are not going to skate right back into the schools at the beginning of the school year,” District Volunteer Coordinator Debi Elfen said. Elfen says if a background check is not approved an alert immediately goes out. “An unapproved status is shown immediately to all of the people at the school, and the school police notify us and we call the principal,” Elfen said. District officials say he was not registered to volunteer this school year, only last school year. Chase was released on bond Monday afternoon. He played football for Florida Atlantic University in 2002 and 2003. Child abuse is a growing epidemic around the globe. Statistics show a child is abused every 10 seconds and 5 children die each day due to abuse or neglect.

Relationships Key to Business Success Bear with me as I give a brief photographic history lesson to underscore the importance of relationships in business: Recently I was at work in a dimly lit club in Austin, Texas, U.S.A. shooting photos of a musician. The establishment had poor lighting, so I increased my camera’s ISO (light sensitivity) to 12,800. This is an amazing number in photography, made possible only in recent years. It was not possible in photography’s film era when an ISO of 400 was considered close to the limit of practicality. When I was in college in the 1960s, a photo lab advertised they could push High Speed Ektachrome (slide film) from its usual speed of 160 to 1600, even though the manufacturer Kodak officially said this was impossible. “Push-processing” of film was like putting a supercharger on it, forcing it to do something beyond what the manufacturer intended. The name of this lab was “Elgin Smith’s Studio 35,” located in Prairie Village, KS. Because of this, when I moved to Kansas City in 1971 I determined to meet and introduce myself to Elgin Smith, and we soon became good friends. When I opened my own custom photo lab in 1973, Elgin became my mentor and he taught me much over the years. After starting my business I soon realized being associated with Elgin as a protégé was a huge asset to the business. It is doubtful my wife and I would have been as successful with our photography company as we were had it not been for his encouragement and referrals. In the years since, I have learned relationships are the key to business success, no matter what your field of endeavor might be. This includes relationships with older people in the same business (as like Elgin

was for me), relationships with peers, and maybe most important, relationships with clients and potential clients. This is why, to this day, I spend a significant amount of my time hanging out with friends. We hear a lot about the value of “networking,” but for me that seems too calculating. There is no substitute for just being friends with people, enjoying their company, and benefiting from being around one another. Someone might ask, “What if the potential client never does business with you? Has your time been wasted?” No. Most people are worth knowing even if they never become customers or send you a referral. We can learn something and grow through everybody we meet. Of course, this is not a new concept. The Bible, written thousands of years ago, says much about it. For example: Relationships mutually enhance our lives. In most cases, we learn from one another - we have different strengths, interests and perspectives we can benefit from. So do not underestimate the value of your relationships. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Relationships provide strength in numbers. You may have heard that two oxen can pull many times more together than one ox can do individually. In the same way, in relationship with others, we can be more effective and successful in achieving our goals. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Eccl. 4:9-12).

To Catch a Thief Q My wife has always worked for her

father’s restaurant in one capacity or another. She started in the kitchen as a helper when she was in high school, later waitressed, later she took care of the front of the restaurant. For the last several years, she managed the restaurant, after her father retired. The restaurant has always been very popular and profitable. My father in law has paid my wife a generous salary for her work, but no part of the profits. She has two brothers and a sister. No others work in the family business. No promises have been made regarding what would happen to the restaurant after the death of the parents who, while in their late sixties, are robustly enjoying their lives, big house, boat, vacations ETC. My career has gone quite will. I am the “president” of the region of a large international business and make very good money. We are now getting a divorce after a twenty-year marriage. It’s been a dogfight of a divorce. She is after permanent alimony. To my surprise, my attorney and forensic accountant have found proof that my wife has been stealing from her parent’s business. For the past couple of years it has been to the tune of $250,000 a year on top of her $75,000 a year salary. She has stashed about $3,000,000 in a bank account in another state. My lawyer tells me that her ill-gotten income cannot be considered by the judge in determining alimony, and that bringing this mess to the court’s attention might require the judge to turn the matter over to the police. He also tells me that the $3,000,000 that she has “saved” may have to go back

to her parents, and not divided between us. What do you think about all this?

A

One of the first things you learn in law school is that you cannot get good title from a thief. Buy a stolen car, for instance, and although you had no idea it was stolen you do not own it, same with money. The only advice your lawyer can or should give you, under the circumstances, is to try to settle the case with your wife, but do not allow the stolen money to be part of the distribution of assets. You will have to be careful not to use the threat of prosecution to blackmail her into an otherwise unfair agreement, because that would be a felony, and the agreement could be set aside in the future. In deciding the alimony question, the Judge cannot base your wife’s income on what she has been stealing from her parents, even though it has been regular and long standing. Nor can the judge impute income to her on that basis, since it far exceeded what a person with her experience could lawfully earn. Her need to keep her misconduct secret from her parents may place her in a position to make a good deal with you on the marital settlement, but try to make sure that it is her idea and not yours. You are certainly allowed to have your lawyers cross examine her during a deposition, so that she knows that you are aware of her misconduct. Be careful to have your divorce attorney, and perhaps, a tax attorney, and a criminal defense attorney investigate your duties to the police authorities and IRS under these circumstances, and act accordingly, so that you do not become an accessory after the fact to crimes.

Business Boca Brick Top Productions Expands to the Big Apple By CRA News Service

Boca-based Brick Top Productions, Inc., known for its award winning, heart pounding entertainment, has expanded its operations with a New York City location. Brick Top’s foray into New York City is a logical step, company officials said. After several outstanding recent successes Brick Top knew it was time to expand. “We couldn’t be more excited to have a New York City presence,” said Alexander Bafer, leading Brick Top and its subsidiaries. “In the city that never sleeps, we will not rest until we leave our indelible mark.” The Americana Music Association chose High Five Entertainment, Brick Top Productions’ majority owned subsidiary, to produce the Americana Music Honors & Awards Broadcast on Sept. 17. Brick Top’s New York City location places

it near several industry leading partners and potential acquisitions, company officials said. Moving forward, Brick Top is confident that this expansion will lead to additional opportunities and more award winning productions, according to a news release. The Company also focused on financing, production, and distribution of theatrical films and television shows within domestic and international markets. Its subsidiaries include High Five Entertainment and York Productions. High Five Entertainment is an entertainment production company. High Five Entertainment specializes in the development and presentation of television programming, including music series, specials, unscripted television, live events and award shows.

Trader Joe’s, Councilwoman Squabble Over Power Lines By Fred Hamilton

In the wake of Trader Joe’s opening at East City Center downtown, Councilwoman Constance Scott made it clear that if the developer did not bury the power lines as directed, she would not be attending the much-anticipated opening of the specialty grocer on Friday, Sept. 26. “I personally feel they violated the development order that was sent out,” Scott said at a Sept. 8 City Council meeting. “I will not be attending the ribbon-cutting on Sept. 26 and I will not be shopping at Trader Joe’s” until the power lines are buried.” Now, a lawyer for Halvorsen Holdings, the developer of Trader Joe’s, has fired off a letter demanding that the vice mayor stop making “tortious” comments about his client. Louis Mrachek wants a retraction and warned that if Scott continues her diatribe, his clients would pursue all of their remedies against her for the damages caused by

her statements. The city wanted Halvorsen Holdings to bury the power lines on the store site, at 855 S. Federal Highway, by Feb. 6, 2015. Until then, the city issued a temporary certificate of occupancy, not a permanent one. If the power lines are not buried by the deadline, the developer could face a series of consequences including the grocery being shut down. The city’s development order states that the power lines have to be underground. City officials maintain that the rule on burying downtown power lines is based on safety and beautification. They fear the power poles in the East City Center parking lot could come down in a bad storm. Besides, they say, they lines are ugly. Despite the threat, Scott is not backing down. “As deputy mayor, it is my responsibility to protect the character of the city,” she wrote in an email.

Boca Resident Brings Pizza Chain to South Florida

When Slava Kopilevich came to the United States from South Ukraine, he had a wife, a one-year-old son, and $200 in his pocket. After working his way up to a managerial position at a wholesale food business, Kopilevich decided the time was right to set out on his own. He opened a Sarpino’s Pizzeria in Chicago, where Sarpino’s is well known, but found the market to be oversaturated. Still, he believed in the brand and in the product they serve, and was willing to do whatever it took to be a part of the company. He opened his flagship location at 100 East Broward Blvd in mid July with plans to open 5 more locations over the next 3 years in South Florida.

“Every single day there is an obstacle,” Kopilevich said. “There is a lot of expectation, and everyone is excited. For a single business owner it can be very difficult, but with corporate backing me up I’ve been able to get through everything from monetary obstacles to licensing issues.” Having a family that supports him has also made a difference for Kopilevich during this transition. Recently he moved his family from Chicago to Boca Raton with his wife and 16 year-old son. Before moving to Boca Raton with his family he sold his Sarpino’s location in Chicago and his wife sold the hair salon she owned and operated. “I’ve created this life for my family by working hard for others,” Kopilevich said. “Now I want to work hard for myself.” Well known in Chicago for its 83 different gourmet pizzas, calzones and other delicious menu items. The delivery pizza chain treats the delivery part of the business as its main business.

Repossessed Yamato Crossing Shopping Center Sold By Jason Schwartz

Deerfield Beach-based Konover South has bought the Yamato Crossing retail center, 200-202 W. Yamato Road, for about $498 per square foot in a bankruptcy auction, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. Fifth Third Bank seized the 28,000-squarefoot property, at the intersection of Yamato Road and NW 2nd Avenue, in 2010 after foreclosing on the late Gregory K. Talbott’s $9.4 million mortgage. The latest price for the nearly 28,000-squarefoot center is significantly more than that amount. “Konover South has the capital and capacity to perform strategic acquisitions, and with

If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented aniontechnology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling. Anne M. from California agrees. “Bambusa socks are absolutely the most comfortable socks I have ever worn! My feet are no longer fatigued!” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 17% to 22% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Jahner comments on the 3D-weave technology. “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. Physical therapists

The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo increase blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved comfort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and less numbness.

use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” "Circulatory dysfunction affects MOST of the adult population in the United States. Heart Disease, Strokes and Diabetic conditions are at epidemic levels; anything that improves circulation improves cellular health and vitality. I use the Bambusa product myself and recommend it to my clients. It really works!” states Dr Jahner. Results in Minutes? John G. of California claims he felt immediate results with his tired, swollen feet. “Without exaggeration the relief was almost instantaneous. It is like a heating pad set to low and wrapped around my calf. I will be replacing my entire set of dress socks with these socks!” Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues. “My feet felt wonderful, cool, and I never got that pins and needles feeling anymore. I love my BambusaTM socks,” says Nancy, from NJ. They are ideal for diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy or injury from repetitive use. BambusaTM socks can also bring comfort to tired legs within minutes of putting them on, energizing individuals who spend long hours on their feet. Goodbye to Pain and Numbness Marilyn H. has suffered persistent foot problems for years and noticed fast results. “The issue for me was per-

sistent numbness in my toes - it was gone completely after a few days of wearing these socks! Being diabetic, I never had pain-free feet UNTIL NOW!” “I went out on the golf course for 18 holes of golf, and when I got home my feet weren’t swollen, they weren’t sweating and my feet didn’t hurt,” says Lou B. from New York. BENEFITS: • Increased blood flow and oxygen • Reduced swelling and pain • Anti-microbial • Wicks away moisture • Increased range of motion IDEAL FOR: • Neuropathy • Raynaud's Syndrome • Cramping • Cold Feet Tom from NJ reports, “I suffer from chronic foot cramps. My feet were sore for days after the cramping. My wife gave me the BambusaTM socks, I wore them, and the foot cramps stopped. I replaced all my socks with BambusaTM. My feet feel great now.” Try Bambusa Risk Free! Order Bambusa™ at no risk and receive two bonus pairs of socks absolutely free! The technology used in BambusaTM socks is independently tested to boost circulation, blood flow and oxygen. These circulation-boosting socks allow you to wrap yourself in relief. BambusaTM is backed by a satisfaction guarantee so you can experience the short and long term results risk free.

sports Lynn’s Chambers Named a Top-9 Finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year

It started with 446 school nominees from all three NCAA Divisions but now it has come down to nine. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee announced today Lynn University women’s golf alum Ellen Chambers has been selected as a Top9 Finalist for the 2014 Woman of the Year Award. The winner is to be announced Sunday, October 19 at the NCAA Woman of the Year awards dinner in Indianapolis, Ind. Chambers is the first Top-9 finalist in school history, seventh for the Sunshine State Conference and the first finalist in the league since Barry University’s Grace Collins in 2012.The former Fighting Knight is looking to become the first Division II winner. Since the award was established in 1991, three have come from Division III and 20 from Division I. Three women from each NCAA division were selected to form the nine finalists. Their college athletics careers are marked by outstanding achievements in the pillars of the Woman of the Year award: academics, athletics, community service and leadership. Joining Chambers from Division II are Jackie Sileo, a women’s lacrosse studentathlete from Long Island University-Post and softball student-athlete Bailey Vrazel from Texas Women’s University. “I am beyond thrilled and very honored to be selected as a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award,” Chambers

said. “I attribute this recognition to the unwavering support of my coach, my teammates, the entire Lynn University athletics department and my professors over the past four years, who have allowed me to grow and develop in the spirit of service, both as a student and an athlete.” The NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 24th year, the award is unique because it recognizes not only the athletics achievements of outstanding young women, but also their academic achievements, community service and leadership. “Lynn University is proud of Ellen Chambers for her resilience to overcome challenges, her commitment to better herself through all opportunities and her diligence toward her academic interests and her golf career,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Kristen Migliano. “Ellen excelled academically and athletically at Lynn University and developed a strong foundation that will serve her well in her future pursuits.” Chambers was a member of the No. 1 Lynn women’s golf team, which won back-toback national championships in 2013 and 2014. She also helped lead the Fighting Knights to their first-ever SSC Women’s Golf Championship in 2014. The international relations major held a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and was named the 2014 NCAA Elite 89 Award recipient at the Division II women’s golf championship in May. She was runner-up for the same award in 2013. Chambers was also named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team. Most recently, the senior was named the 2014 Lynn University Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Chambers claimed individual medalist honors at the 2014 NCAA Division II South/

No. 6 Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season to Rollins

Lynn University’s men’s soccer team was handed its first loss of the season on Saturday night. The Fighting Knights lost a hard-fought battle to Rollins (4-2) in nonconference, 2-1. Chris Hellmann scored Lynn’s only goal in the 75th minute as the Blue & White returns home 5-1 overall. Lynn outshot Rollins 9-5 in the first half while the Tars edged the Blue & White 5-3 in corner kicks. Chris Hellmann had three shots, all on goal in the first half as Nicolas Mortensen had a pair of shots on goal but the duo was unable to connect as Rollins’ keeper Julian Grundler made six saves in goal. At the half, Lynn and RC remained scoreless. The intensity doubled in the second half as Rollins controlled the flow of the game for the first ten minutes of the second half but Lynn’s defense was lights out allowing nothing through. In the 61st minute Alexis

Martinez scored on a cross into the box from Matt Volk to give the Tars a 1-0 lead. Max Schmidt had a hand on the ball but Martinez’s shot was so strong it hit the post and went in. Lynn’s Nicolas Mortensen hit the crossbar five minutes later on a shot which was the first of a series of shots for the Fighting Knights, but they were unable to penetrate Rollins’ defense. Grant Blackhurst scored on a throw in from Matt Volk in the 74th minute to increase the Tars’ lead to two. Less than two minutes later Hellmann scored on a rebounded shot by Mortensen to cut the deficit to 2-1. As the game played on each team battled and exchanged shot for shot until the final horn. Lynn tallied 10 shots on goal in the game holding Rollins to just two. Rollins’ goalkeeper made nine saves in the Tars victory.

Southeast Super Regional after winning with a three-round score of 218 (+2). She was later named 2014 WGCA All-America Honorable Mention and to the WGCA AllSouth Region team. Lynn finished the season undefeated against all NCAA Division II opponents and won a Division II record 11 tournaments. The Fighting Knights tied a SSC record with seven consecutive tournament victories during 2014. Away from the course, Chambers was a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee joined the Lynn University College Democrats while serving Organizing for America, and served as Vice President of the International Affairs Society for two years. Chambers volunteered at the 2012 U.S. General Election Final Presidential Debate, after which she was selected to provide a number of local, national and international interviews discussing foreign policy. She also spent two years mentoring female high school students with Lynn’s Leading Ladies. Additionally, Chambers presented research at the 20th Annual Women and Society Conference. She was inducted into the Lynn University Honors Society in 2012, and represented Lynn University at the

University of Pennsylvania’s Model United Nationals conference. She presented to the Broadcast Education Association Regional Conference in 2013 and was inducted into the Lynn University President’s Honor Society. “I am ecstatic for Ellen [Chambers] because this is an award that she truly deserves,” added Senior Woman Administrator and Assistant Athletics Director Sara Quatrocky. “She has left an amazing legacy here at Lynn University; one that she can be proud while setting the standard for future student-athletes.” Annually, NCAA member schools from all three divisions nominate their own woman of the year. To be eligible, these women must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have completed eligibility in their primary sport. Conferences then select a conference honoree from their list of school nominees. Ten women from each of the three divisions make up the top 30, spanning various NCAA sports. The top 30 honorees reflect the pillars of the Woman of the Year award: outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
