Boca Woman ‘Spontaneously’ Revives

After 45 Minutes Without a Pulse

Morikami Park Elementary Named National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Doctors at Boca Raton Regional Hospital are calling it “a miracle.” They have no way to explain how Ruby GrauperaCassimiro survived after spending 45 minutes without a pulse and enduring three hours of attempts to bring her back from neardeath on Sept. 23. They were about to declare the 40-year-old Boca Raton woman dead shortly after having delivering her new daughter by cesarean section. “There was no pulse, no blood pressure and the patient was not breathing on her own,” Dr. Chadi Loutfi, a local pulmonologist, said.

Graupera-Cassimiro, now a mother of two, was suffering from a rare complication called an amniotic fluid embolism, in which

the fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb enters the mother’s blood stream. The condition can cause life-threatening blood clots.

As Graupera-Cassimiro slipped into unconsciousness, doctors and nurses rushed back to her room in a desperate effort to save her life. They began chest compression that would continue for 45 minutes. They took turns to avoid exhaustion and used electric shock paddles. But nothing worked. Out of options, doctors began calling her family in to say goodbye. But then, incredibly, there was the blip of a heartbeat. “It was indeed something we don’t see,” Loutfi said. “I’ve never seen it myself. The whole family and a big majority of the medical team believe there was some kind of divine intervention.” Family members left the room and began praying. Doctors took Graupera-Cassimiro off life support one day later. On Tuesday, she and her newborn baby returned to the hospital to thank nurses and doctors for their life-saving efforts. “All I know is that I’m grateful to be here,” Graupera-Cassimiro told them.” Had you

guys maybe stopped before the 45 minutes of compressions …. I don’t know why I was given this opportunity, but I’m very grateful for it.” Childbirth complications like GrauperaCassimiro’s are rare - it is estimated that between 1 and 12 cases of amniotic embolism occur with every 100,000 births, according to the Mayo Clinic. Scientists don’t fully understand why complications occur for some mothers but not for others, but pregnancy at an older age, c-sections, and medically induced labor may increase the risk to some women. Graupera-Cassimiro did not suffer any brain damage or physical injuries from efforts to revive her. “There’s very few things in medicine that I’ve seen, working in the trauma center myself and doing all the things that I do, that really were either unexplainable or miraculous,” said Dr. Anthony Dardano, president of the hospital’s medical staff. “And when I heard this story, that was the first thing that came to my mind.”

Tenth Avenue North Returns To Boca Raton with Two-Night Tour By Pedro Heizer

After the success of last year’s tour that came to Spanish River Church on November 16, local band, Tenth Avenue North is back and this time they are bringing friends. With three different legs to the tour, “From Islands to Cathedrals” has had the likes of Matt Maher, Phil Wickam, Royal Taylor and KB as opening acts. GRAMMY-nominated band, Royal Taylor, and Florida-native artist KB will also bring their talents to Boca Raton for a two-night show at Spanish River Church on Thursday, November 20, and Friday, November 21. Royal Taylor released their self-titled sophomore album on October 22 and it’s an electrifying step forward for the GRAMMY-nominated band. KB released his first full-length album in 2012, Weight and Glory, and has been touring around the world since the release of his debut album. “The whole opening section of the night is going to be a party and a celebration it going to be a fun night. If you don’t like to have a good time and trying to be bored, just stay at home because it’s going to be very entertaining for sure.” Tenth Avenue North’s drummer Jason Jamison jokes. For Tenth Avenue North, this is their second time returning to South Florida in as many years. “It’s a hometown show,” says Jamison. “If we were to ever claim a city or location in the tour as our hometown, it would have to be Boca Raton and South Florida.” The band, which was formed in West Palm

Beach while the members were students at Palm Beach Atlantic University, began their latest tour on October 3rd in Pennsylvania and will close out the 30-city tour on December 7th in Kentucky. Before all the tours and worldwide fame, the group led worship at Christ Fellowship in West Palm Beach and also led worship in other churches in the area. “I remember us going around to local churches in a Palm Beach Atlantic van that the school graciously lend to us,” remembers Jamison, who’s been a part of the band since its creation. “And now they are sponsoring our nationwide Tour, so that’s neat.” “When you start a band, you never really expect it for the band to explode the way we did,” said guitarist Jeff Owen who has been with the band for seven years. “It’s a blessing to be able to do what we are doing right now. “When I moved down to go to school at Palm Beach Atlantic I had a friend who said ‘Hey man, I have a friend who plays guitar, and since you play drums you two should get together and jam’,” recalls Jamison of his first encounter with Mike Donehey. “When we started leading worship at camps and conferences around Florida, we never intended on making this a full-time job,” joked Jamison. “But we stayed busy and kept saying yes, and we kept getting more and more invitations and that’s when we realized, ‘wow we could do this full time.’” In the span of their 14-year career, the band has released four albums, with the fourth being released November 10th.

The Dove Award-winning band’s fourth studio album, fittingly titled Cathedrals, is a collection of well-crafted songs that inspire community, encourage accountability and celebrate the fact we are not alone. “So many of us live in isolation and we really don’t have to,” says Donehey. “So the idea is: ‘Hey get in the boat with us, sail by the stars of God’s promises and reach the shore of community.’ We realize that when we start to live together, we become the cathedrals on earth. We are the place where the sprit resides. It no longer dwells in buildings but in each of us.” It seems only fitting that in making an album that celebrates community the members of Tenth Avenue North worked more closely together than ever as a tight-

www.bocaratontribune.com

knit creative unit. “This is the first record that we actually wrote completely together as a band,” says Donehey. “We had outside writers on all the other albums and this is the first time we just did the whole thing together.” The band began writing songs or the record when they were on the Winter Jam tour. “We knew going into that tour that we were going to have a lot of downtime and that we had a mission to write a record,” says Jamison. “So we locked ourselves away in dressing rooms, buses and hallways. If the sun was shining, we would go outside and we would just try to write as much as we could. That was our life for four or five months and we came out with about 20-25 songs.”

55 Years of Healing Hands Palm Beach County lost a giant in recent passing of longtime physician Dr. Virgil C. Norris, who made history as the county’s first black surgeon. Dr. Norris epitomized the ideal of the servant leader. I met “Doc” when I came to Delray Beach in the late 1980s as a newspaper reporter. One thing was apparent; there was hardly a family in the black community then that was not a patient of Dr. Norris. I soon learned that he was credited with a few firsts: the first black surgeon in Palm Beach County, the first black doctor to serve on the staff at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach and he also was a member of the first trauma surgical team at Delray Medical Center. I recall shadowing Dr. Norris through the halls at Delray Medical Center some years ago and it was evident he was more than a surgeon. He was a brilliant clinical practitioner, a wise and thoughtful teacher and a great mentor who guided many young doctors over his 50 plus-year career. The younger doctors, in the sunrise

of their careers, were glued to every word he shared. He opined on the benefits of sutures versus staples to close incisions. Dr. Norris also was a man of deep and abiding kindness and quiet modesty. It is entirely consistent with his character that many who knew him may well not have known that he was also a part of history. After earning his Bachelors of Science degree from Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va. in 1950, Dr. Norris served two years during the Korean conflict. Upon his return, he taught school in Gadson County. But after a stint, he enrolled in Meharry Medical College of Medicine in Nashville and earned his degree four years later in 1959. Following his internship at Kate B. Reynolds Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C., he began practicing family medicine in Florida. Not long after, upon the urging of his professors, he decided to further his training in general surgery at the Ohio State University Hospital in Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. He returned to his roots in the Sunshine

State where he practiced. Dr. Norris was also a tireless community servant, having served as president of several local organizations. He was an active life member of the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Delray Beach Masonic Lodge, the Naciremas Club and his beloved fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also was active in his church, St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He was well known for sponsoring and participating in health forums that addressed the prevention and treatment of diseases that affect women and minorities. His alma maters recognized him for his faithful financial contributions, which helped several young people to achieve their career goals. Dr. Norris was a fearless man of integrity and conviction. Though soft spoken, he certainly was a powerful voice and advocate for civil rights. That was evident in 1982 when a Florida Highway Patrol trooper ticketed him three times and arrested the former marathon runner for

jogging up and down the steep concrete embankments between Interstate 95 and Southwest 10th Street in Delray Beach. The criminal charges against Dr. Norris were dismissed but he sued the trooper for violating his constitutional rights. He maintained that the trooper’s repeated ticketing was malicious. A jury upheld the right of the trooper to ticket him but a federal judge ordered the trooper to leave Doc alone. While we are saddened by the loss, we are encouraged by the legacy Dr. Norris left behind. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

You Can Restore the Human Touch! Grateful as we should be for so many contemporary technological advances, we also need to recognize how some modern gadgets and procedures tend to dehumanize people! Items supposedly intended to save time, often become the causes of utter frustration and loss of precious time. Think of the telephone, for instance. You dial the right number only to wait, endlessly, for your turn to get a personal answer.

When someone responds, you’re told that you are being transferred to a different extension where more time is lost, waiting again for someone to answer. If a response finally comes, you are given another number which you promptly call, only to discover that they don’t have the answer for your inquiry or, perhaps, the product you are seeking is unavailable. Similar unpleasant experiences also exist, when you are put on-hold, never to gain

access to another human, except for a cold recording which announces what doesn’t offer you any help at all. Instead of benefitting from many such devices, some people become slaves to them, in spite of the aggravation that such experiences bring, and the total lack of positive results. In no way am I proposing a rejection or dismissal of modern technologies, but only advocating a more humane approach

to all human interactions. This comes as each citizen seeks to restore the human touch in all their contacts with others, whenever feasible. There is no item, as good as it may be, that cannot be made much better in its use, and ultimate purpose. You can utilize your creativity in the employment of your tools, and in promoting more personable ways which do not degrade fellow humans, nor yourself as well!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Plans to Extend Alcohol Serving Hours Shut Down

By Kathryn Wohlpart

An original draft of an ordinance would have allowed Jazziz nightclub to extend alcohol sales until 4 a.m. A new draft established to open the pilot program up to other local “entertainment venues” failed to pass in a council meeting on Monday, Nov. 10. An establishment was required to be within Community Redevelopment Area boundaries, hold a license, have live music and a stage, and be at least 275 feet away from the closest residential area. The ordinance would create a six month program to extend hour operations on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. “This has tremendous amount of unintended consequences. This could have a deleteri-

ous affect on our downtown,” said Deputy Mayor Constance J. Scott who said she was in favor of the original draft that limited the pilot to one location. According to the draft, “the City has the absolute discretion and authority to terminate, modify or revoke the pilot program established by this ordinance at any time and for any or no reason.” One such reason for terminating the ordinance states that three or more verified police incidents with in sixty days would call for an immediate shutdown of the pilot program. “Again, this is a pilot so I have no problem closing this thing down, either if there are three incidents or if we find that it’s just not doing what this council is envisioning,” said council member Robert Weinroth. “And

I’m hearing from the assistant city manager saying that our public safety concerns are being addressed, at least as far as can be under the circumstances with the additional funding that is going to the police department.” Establishments would be required to hire an extra-duty City of Boca Raton police officer to secure the outside area from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. if the establishment can hold more than 300 occupants. “Our intent has been and is still to bring a world-class, bonafide entertainment establishment to downtown Boca. This is nothing new to other cosmopolitan cities…It’s a late night business, that’s why we’re called

Jazziz nightclub, because we bring in jazz and we do it at night,” said Michael Fagien, the representative from Jazziz. Citizen comments during the city council meeting reflected a desire to keep the alcohol hours from changing. “We don’t need a 4 a.m. closing and the associated problems that come with it. If we look north to our neighbor in Delray Beach, a very vibrant downtown, 2 a.m. closing,” said George O’Rourke, a Boca Raton citizen. After learning that the ordinance would open up the extended hours to 17 establishments, the city council decided not to pass the ordinance.

“Rosewater” a Cautionary Tale for Our Time

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

Gov. Rick Scott Cruises to Big Victory! My dear friend, Esther Scott, Mother of Gov. Scott would have been so proud of her son, Rick last night. Esther passed away in November last year and Gov. Scott had tears in his eyes last night during his acceptance speech remembering his wonderful Mother. The Gov. was joined on a win of over 80,000 votes by his beautiful wife, Ann and daughters, Jordan and Allison and their husbands, Jeremy and Pierre. I met all of them a few years ago when I was the guest and roommate of Esther Scott at Presidency 5 at the beautiful Peabody Hotel in Orlando.. We shared a room right next door to the Gov. and Ann and to his beautiful daughters and their husbands.

Gov. Scott won by over 80,000 votes and sent Charlie Crist back to St. Petersburg. The Republican’s also took back the Senate showing people are fed up with current administration. I have met Lt. Gov. Carlos Cantera on several occasions on the Campaign Trail as I was involved in the Scott campaign. Carlos Cantera is a very bright, kind and caring person and deserves another shot at being Lt. Gov. It also was a huge win for my friend, Jeff Attwater, CFO of Florida who trounced his opponent as well as Pam Bondi and Adan Putnam. I am a very happy person today!

The first time I met Gael Garcia Bernal I thought this kid is going places. That was 13 years ago, when Bernal costarred with Diego Luna in the sexy Mexican comedy “Y Tu Mama Tambien.” Bernal went on to star in such important movies as “Motorcycle Diaries,” “The Science of Sleep” and “Babel.” Now Bernal has the role of his 35-year-old life as Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari in “Rosewater,” a truth-based movie written and directed by Jon Stewart. If Mexicanborn Bernal is not already the biggest young Latin-American star, he will be after American audiences see this gripping film. Maziar Bahari was born and raised in Tehran, but he was a Canadian citizen based in London when Newsweek magazine hired him as to cover the hotly-contested 2009 presidential election. The incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was a hard-line militant Islamic. His challenger, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, was a more liberal, democratic candidate. Bahari left his pregnant wife (Claire Foy) behind in London and took up residence in his old bedroom at his mother’s (Shoreh Aghdashloo) house. In a comical scene, Bahari engages Davood (Dimitri Leonidas), whom he first sees driving a taxi, as his driver. When Davood shows up on his tiny motorcycle, Bahari

www.bocaratontribune.com

had no choice but to hop on back. It also was a good vantage point for Bahari to wield his video camera. One of the first places Davood showed Bahari was a secret rooftop forest of forbidden satellite dishes that enabled young students and dissidents to keep in touch with what was going on in the free world. When the incumbent president was reelected in a landslide, students and dissidents took to the streets in a spontaneous demonstration. With his camera running, Bahari caught Islamic police firing on the unarmed students. The volatile video was smuggled out of the country and Bahari filed his story for Newsweek. Not long after that the police came knocking at dawn on June 21, 2009. They said “Get dressed,” put Bahari in handcuffs and led him away to the notorious Evin Prison. The balance of the film is largely the daily interrogation of Bahari, who was blindfolded much of the time. While Bahari was roughed up from time to time, the real torture was the psychological warfare carried out good cop (Nassir Faris) bad cop (Haluk Bilginer) style. It is no wonder Bahari broke down after implicit threats to his mother, wife and unborn daughter. Yet even under the greatest duress Bahari show a sense of humor by concocting ever more ridiculous conspiracy stories. The ordeal went on for 118 days, but it is never really over as long as a totalitarian government tramples the rights of people. As I write this, journalist Jason Rezalan has been languishing in the same Evin Prison for more than 100 without being charged with any specific crime. Jon Stewart has done a service to freedomlovers everywhere by bringing this drama to light and to Gael Garcia Bernal in particular for giving him such a powerful vehicle to demonstrate his talent.

A Solution Better Than Butting Heads Last week we looked at consequences of submitting to the insistent demands of our egos, doing whatever is necessary to ensure getting what we desire. Recently I came across an illustration from nature that demonstrates the virtues of very different behavior. The story comes from Ulrich Zwingli, a leader of the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland in the early 1500s. He and Martin Luther, the catalyst for the Reformation, were locked in a serious dispute, and Zwingli was at a loss in trying to resolve the conflict. He found the solution one morning while gazing at the side of a mountain. He observed two goats approaching each other on a narrow path on the mountainside, one going up and the other going down. Upon seeing one another they stopped, then lowered their heads. It appeared they were about to charge each other. However, instead of butting heads, the goat ascending the mountain lay down on the path. The descending goat was able to step over the other’s back, and the animals were able to proceed unimpeded. If the goats had chosen to butt heads, one may have prevailed. But the result might also have been disastrous for both. So one bowed before the other, in effect humbling itself, which eventually enabled it to advance higher. How often do we see instances in the business and professional world of two or more people fixed on their goals and objectives, determined to not let anything stand in their way? When they do encounter opposition, they insist on butting heads, battling to a bitter and sometimes bloody conclusion. But consider the lesson Zwingli learned

from the goats. One of them deferred briefly to the other, leading to a “win-win” outcome. Would not this approach have merit for resolving workplace conflicts? This principle finds ample support in the Bible. Here are some of the things it has to say: Go lower to get higher. Being willing to defer to the interests of another should not be one-sided. Both benefit when they are willing to “submit” or be “subject” to one another.Just as a submarine goes under water, submitting or being subject to others means intentionally putting oneself under another. “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). Superiors and subordinates should yield to one another. The customary business model is for superiors to exert their authority over those that report to them, but the best leaders are ones having the interests of their employees at heart. “Slaves (employees), obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ…. And masters (superiors), treat your slaves (employees) in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven…” (Ephesians 6:5-9). Work with an attitude of humility toward coworkers – and to God. Rather than demanding your desires, relating humbly toward others can win their good favor and support. ”Be submissive to those who are older…clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” (1 Peter 5:5-6). “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves, then, to God”(James 4:6-7).

“What Do You Think is The Most Beautiful Thing About Women?”

Why do some men stay in unhealthy relationships, why do others leave great women after just a few months of dating, and what, if anything, do their actions and words mean? I wanted to get to the bottom of why seemingly good relationships fail and to understand how the male mind really works, so I set out to interview 100+ men. I started out on this journey to truly understand how men actually feel about women and to discover what really matters to men. I decided that the best way to uncover this truth was to ask men all the burning questions that women wanted to know about them. So I randomly asked about 75 women what they wanted to know and understand about men and their responses became my interview questions. I have interviewed single, married and divorced men ages 20-80 from all different races and backgrounds. This column is based on my upcoming book about men’s interpretations and experiences with women and how 100+ men really feel about women. What follows are some of the men’s answers to one of the questions from the actual interviews. The follow up to this question from most men has been, “You mean physically?” I clarify and tell them that their description can be physical, emotional or intellectual; whatever they think is the most beautiful thing about women. About one third of the men I interviewed felt that a woman’s physical attributes and how she carries herself is the most beautiful thing about her. For instance, a single 28-year-old IT consultant from New Jersey said, “I have a few answers for you. A woman’s eyes are amazing and eye contact is a big turn on for me. Intelligence in a woman is very beautiful and of course great legs and butt are always an added bonus.” Another 41-year-old married businessman from upstate New York shared, “As you women get older you develop this sexiness that just isn’t seen in younger women. You all become more intellectual and confident

and that is so attractive to men, we love it!” “Their body for sure is the most beautiful thing about women.” Added a 55-year-old single postal worker from Queens, New York. But not all men felt that a woman’s physical characteristics were the most beautiful thing. Around half of the men felt that a woman’s compassionate and nurturing side was more beautiful. For example, a 21-year-old college student from Georgia shared, “A woman’s ability to be compassionate is so beautiful, they come by it naturally which is all the more beautiful.” A 29-year-old single student from Virginia stated, “The way a woman can inspire you is so incredibly beautiful. She can make you feel like you’re the king of the world.” “The way a woman smells is so beautiful. It’s not her perfume or anything like that, but her natural smell like her pheromones can drive a man wild.” Said a 46-year-old single Artist from Delaware. “A woman’s caring and loving nature is beautiful. They are so nurturing and it’s so natural for them, it’s amazing.” Stated a 48-year-old divorced marketing consultant from the UK. It was obvious to me that men find all sorts of things attractive about women. However, when it comes right down to it, men find a woman’s loving and compassionate nature to be the most beautiful thing about them. Fortunately, men find beauty in some many different things about women and it seems to go much deeper than a woman’s physical appearance. I am still in the process of interviewing men between the ages of 40-80 for my upcoming book about men and their interpretations and experiences with women and relationships. If you’re interested in being interviewed and sharing your insights and opinions, please contact me at solticelife@ gmail.com. Interviews last approximately 90 minutes and will take place in a coffee shop or via Skype.

“We believe one dose of this high performance 1.5g of omega-3 will change your opinion of fish oil with the dramatic results,” says Terry Tormey, CEO of Prevention Pharmaceuticals. Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. And some of that "extra" content you could do without, such as saturated fats, including unwanted omega-6 fatty acids, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs commonly found in fish. Freezer Test Proves Purity Omax3® was shown in lab tests to be 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. Put a pill of your store bought brand of omega3 in the freezer overnight. Then put Omax3® Ultra PureTM in the freezer overnight. The difference is clear. The store bought brand will be cloudy, even a solid white. This is caused by the bad fats and toxins solidifying, which your body doesn’t need. Omax3® will remain clear, which equals safety and effectiveness. Fewer Pills Better Results The patented delivery system gives you 1.5g per serving in just two easy to swallow liquid gel capsules, compared to the 6-12 you would need to take of a store bought formula. This means fewer pills equals greater results, you can feel. Pharmaceutical Strength You now get the extreme health benefits you deserve and at the lowest possible price and without the fish burps! If you’re worried about cholesterol, painful joints,

Doctor Recommended “As a neurosurgeon I stand behind the breakthrough of the 4:1 ratio of EPA/DHA that makes up Omax3®. It’s simply the most effective. The pharmaceutically-activated molecule maximizes absorption. Personally, I use Omax3® to keep my joints pain free as I still run marathons at age 74. I notice the mental boost. 2014-15 Lynn Men’s Basketball Season Preview

Lynn University’s men’s basketball program will continue to work towards returning the program to excellence in the 2014-15 season which begins on Saturday, November 15, when the Fighting Knights host Armstrong State at 7:30 pm in the de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center on the campus of Lynn University. Head coach Jeff Price has added five new faces to the team this offseason to join the 11 returners from the 2013-14 squad which finished 9-18 overall

and 3-13 in the Sunshine State Conference. With five seniors on the court this year, Coach Price is looking to his upperclassmen to lead the team. Last season Aaron Harrison was named to the All-SSC Second Team and All-Newcomer Team after ranking top-five in the conference for points, rebounds and steals. Harrison is joined by T.J. Bullock, the only four-year member of the Blue & White, as well as Kaleb Clyburn, Michael Birts and Cory Thomas.

This season’s squad has nine juniors, four of which transferred to Lynn over the summer. Russell Wilson, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Lake Wales, Fla., began his career at Division I Samford, while Ben Berry, David Johnson and Patrick Jones all came to Lynn from the junior college level. Additionally, Lynn returns Erin Gulersen, Dante Scholl, Haki Stampley, Fred Landers and Pavle Raickovic. Kevin Johnston is the lone sophomore on the team while local standout Vanderbilt Carpenter fills in as the only freshman. With a tough non-conference schedule, the Blue & White will look to build a strong foundation heading into SSC play. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Seton Hill, Florida Memorial, Midwestern State, Nyack and Winston Salem State are all on the list as early season opponents for Lynn. The Fighting Knights will appear in two tournaments, first the NSU Thanksgiving Classic November 28 & 29, where they will play P.R.-Mayaguez and Seton Hill. Lynn

hosts the annual Boca Raton Courtyard by Marriott Classic which takes place December 19 & 20 where Barry, Nyack and Winston Salem State will be in attendance. Conference season begins early for the Blue & White when they host Rollins on December 4, but won’t face another conference opponent until January 3 on the road at Tampa. In addition to the SSC schedule, provisional SSC member Palm Beach Atlantic will play a home and home series against the Fighting Knights. The NCAA has selected Lynn’s January 18, game at Saint Leo as the CBS Sports Network Division II Game of the Week. The game will be streamed live on NCAA. com as well as televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. The Sunshine State Conference tournament is set for March 6-8, in Kissimmee, Fla., at the Silver Spurs Arena. Despite being picked last in the SSC Preseason Coaches Poll, Lynn’s lineup has plenty of depth to well exceed expectations.

Men’s Basketball Opens The Season At Elon, Hosting Warner

The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team will open its regular season with a contest at Elon on Friday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. before returning home to host Warner on Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. The Owls kicked off the 2014-15 year with a 73-60 exhibition win over St. Thomas on Saturday. Marquan Botley led FAU with 17 points, while freshman Justin Massey had 15 points and seven rebounds. Elon defeated Emory and Henry 90-50 in its exhibition game. Freshman Dmitri Thompson led five Phoenix players in double figures with 14 points in the victory. Friday’s meeting will be the third season in a row that the two teams have met, with Elon winning the first two. The Phoenix took last year’s meeting in Boca Raton 67-62 despite a double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds) from Justin Raffington. Warner is already 5-0 on the season and its trip to Boca Raton will be the fifth of eight straight games away from home for

November 14 - 20 ,2014

the Royals. It will be the sixth consecutive season that the team has traveled to FAU Arena. The Owls won last year’s meeting 81-47, pulling down a school record 61 rebounds in the process. Monday night’s game will be NBA Night and fans are encouraged to wear their favorite NBA jersey or t-shirt and receive $1 off their ticket purchase. The first 1,000 fans will receive an FAU Rally Towel courtesy of Coca-Cola. People can also meet Burnie the Miami Heat mascot, win a pair of Miami Heat tickets, and win a Michael Curry Toronto Raptors jersey. Subscription-based live audio of Friday’s game and subscription based live video of Monday’s game will be available through FAUSports.com. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform. American Sports Network will carry the game live.

Preview: Park Vista At Boca High Boy’s Soccer

By Jihad Shatara

The Bobcats of Boca Raton High have big visions for this upcoming season. The Bobcats, led by coach Marcelo Castillo, do not only have hopes for a district title, but a have hopes for a state title. Even though it is early, the Bobcats are arguably the hottest team from Boca, and Palm Beach County. The Bobcats will face a tough opponent Wednesday night playing Park Vista. It is a key game for both teams looking to start off week 2 on the right foot. For the Bobcats, they look to stay undefeated. After rallying to tie against Suncoast in the second half, Boca Raton is riding a two game winning streak into Wednesday night. As for Park Vista, they look to dethrone Boca this year as the Bobcats go for a 13th consecutive district title. Park Vista has never beaten Boca and are coming off of a tough 3-2 loss to Palm Beach Central. The Bobcats look to be one of the most competitive teams in the state of Florida,

and it showed when I visited their practice Tuesday morning. There was no school due to the holiday, but it did not disrupt the flow for Coach Castillo’s team. Leaders like Lucas DeCarvalho, a senior who has been part of Castillo’s program for four years now, brings the team intensity to a whole new level. This Bobcats team looks focused and ready for any challenge that comes their way. Their practices were high intensity and constant conditioning. District 11-5A will not be an easy district to win. Royal Palm, Spanish River, Park Vista, Suncoast, and Palm Beach Central all look to be contenders early. Park Vista will definitely have upset on their mind Wednesday night, looking for their first district win. The Boca Raton High Bobcats have big visions for this season. The Bobcats (2-0-1) will face off against Park Vista (1-1-0) at Bobcats Stadium Wednesday November 12th at 6pm. It will be the first true test for the Bobcats as they look for their first district win of the season.
