Bruce’s of Great Neck is Restaurateur to the Stars in West Boca Bruce’s of Great Neck was founded in 1976 on the “Gold Coast” of Merrick, Long Island. After several years of operation, Bruce’s expanded to Roosevelt Field, Long Island. In 1983, Bruce decided that Great Neck, NY, would be the perfect place to sell the high-quality line of baked goods. Expanding the concept to a full service restaurant, Bruce’s became a “one-of-a-kind” operation. It had something for everyone from cinnamon raisin bobka french toast, nova platters, to gourmet panini’s. Over the years, a complimentary, basket of fresh baked goods had become their trademark and tradition. Continue on page 9

the ninth-best on the list of high schools in the state. The website Niche.com compiled its list by ranking 14,431 high schools based on. Niche, a company providing reviews and data on K-12 schools, colleges and neighborhoods nationwide, ranked 14,431 public high schools nationwide based on opinions from 280,000 students and parents, diver-

sity data, health and safety data, academic considerations including standardized test scores, teachers and other factors. Academics held the most weight in the rankings. Niche examined school assessment data, SAT and ACT scores, enrollment in Advanced Placement classes and graduation rates to calculate a school system’s academic score. According to the site, “a high ranking indi-

cates the school is an exceptional academic institution with a diverse set of high-achieving students who rate their experience very highly.” The website based its rankings of private schools, elementary schools and school districts on similar considerations. In April, the U.S. News & World Report released its 2014 Best High Schools rankings and ranked Boca Raton High School 33rd

Joey Merlino Taking Miami Prison ‘Vacation’ By William Bender

Is Boca Raton resident Joey Merlino still the head of the Philadelphia mob? He says no. The feds aren’t so sure. But few can argue with this: He’s probably the only maître d’ in the country who can do a four-month prison stint and still have a job waiting for him when he returns. Merlino, 52, reported to a federal detention center in Miami at 2 p.m. Monday. A Philadelphia judge ruled in October that he had violated the terms of his supervised release on a 2001 racketeering conviction by associating with an old mob pal at a cigar bar in June. “I’ll be in great shape for when I get out on Cinco de Mayo,” Merlino texted to the Daily News Monday afternoon. Merlino, who has been living in Boca Raton since he was released from prison in 2011,

in Florida and 603rd in the nation. That list ranked Dreyfoos fifth and Suncoast eighth in the state. An additional 834 schools received a grade but were not eligible for ranking. The list includes magnet, charter, and online schools. For more information, read the full methodology at https://k12.niche.com/ rankings/public-high-schools/best-overall/ methodology/.

Remembering 3 Dedicated, Passionate Public Servants The American people have lost three giants of men with the recent passing of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, former U.S. Senator Edward Brooke and longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott. A wise old woman once said that death comes in threes. While the persistence of this belief is difficult to explain since the case for it is so easily demolished, I still maintain that my grandmother was a clever woman. I woke up New Year’s Day thankful for God’s favor to see another year and was enjoying the subzero temperature, only to learn that Gov. Cuomo had died that afternoon. The 82-year-old crusader was one of the few remaining old-fashioned politicians whose integrity was beyond reproach. He embraced and cared for everyone, regardless of your political affiliation. In fact, unlike the political environment of today where Democrats and Republicans are polarized against each other, the powerful orator could reach across the aisle to make connections and work with his colleagues to get things accomplished. During my stint as a reporter for the Times Herald-Record in Middleton, N.Y., I found Gov. Cuomo to be high-minded, philosophical and someone who never swayed with the political winds. I respected him. Befitting an era where politics was hardball, but not

personal, the long-time liberal lion could be incredibly gracious even to those who disagreed with him. And even when you disagreed, you could understand his position and it increased your knowledge of the issue. He was a champion of social justice and did not compromise his ardent personal views. Two days after Gov. Cuomo took his last breath at his Manhattan apartment, Sen. Brooke died at his home in Coral Gables. Only hours later, Stu followed. (Coincidentally, both died of cancer – Sen. Brooke of breast cancer and Stu of appendiceal cancer, a very rare form of the disease.) The passing of Sen. Brooke at 95, and Stu, 49, strikes a deep, emotional chord within me as I knew both of them very well. They were my fraternity brothers, having crossed the burning sands and entered into the communion of brotherhood we call Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. I first met Sen. Brooke as a student at Hyde Park High School in Boston when he spoke to my class during Black History Month. I would later see him - one of the most popular politicians in Massachusetts - at events around the city or at private gatherings in my neighbor’s home. I was on top of the world when I interviewed him for the campus radio station. It

was cool to meet the first black elected to the Senate - in 1966 - by popular vote. The only previous two black senators, Blanche K. Bruce and Hiram R. Revels, both Republicans, were elected not by voters but by the Mississippi Legislature in the 1870s. The Senator downplayed the historic fact. He made it clear then that he was tired of being called “first this, first that.” Despite his impressive resume, he did not want to be considered “a national leader for the Negro people.” Years later, he spoke to my class, taught by the late James Baldwin – another fraternity brother - at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I was baffled that this brother was a Republican. So I asked him why. I learned that in 1950, his friends urged him to run for state representative in both the Democratic and Republican primaries, as was legal then. He also said that most blacks were Republicans then. And while he was a Republican, his views were liberal. Sen. Brooke remained active in the city and in September 2002, he was diagnosed with breast cancer, which about 1,500 American men receive every year. After a double mastectomy, he was declared cancer free. He began warning men — particularly black men, who are statistically more susceptible

— about the danger of breast cancer. Stu, on the other hand, battled cancer with such dignity for seven years. He rarely spoke of it. We ran into each other at a National Association of Black Journalists regional convention shortly after he was diagnosed and all we did was hugged and shared “the grip”. We met at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where Stu studied speech communication and I, journalism. He played wide receiver and defensive back on the club football team, joined Mu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and worked at the student radio station. In 1987, he was hired by WPDE-TV in Florence, S.C., and I headed to the Sunshine State for the then Fort Lauderdale News/Sun-Sentinel. Three years later, he got a job in Orlando and we hung out a few times before he left for ESPN. As we say goodbye to Gov. Cuomo, Sen. Brooke and my friend, Stu, and reflect upon their countless achievements, we must also say goodbye to a time in history that is passing with them and will soon be gone entirely: an era of giants and true trailblazers. Sleep on beloved, rest in peace.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

No Intimidation, Nor Retaliation! There are good ways and bad for everything persons do. People who choose the good ways often succeed, and that stimulates them in continually improving that which is already good! Those who embrace bad ways only see their attempts going from bad to worse till they reach the point of no return! In human relations it’s no different, and it happens too often. Some people operate totally unconcerned with well-tested conventional procedures, only to find themselves in undesirable, unnecessary conflicts with others, when its opposite is equally viable! There are persons who become so con-

vinced of their methods as the only valid ones in multiple situations, that they make themselves nearly impossible to relate. They will employ manipulation, intimidation, and even retaliation to force compliance with their personal choices and ways. Others make themselves difficult to negotiate with if they are asked to repeat something they had already stated, but which still requires further explanation. Yet, full clarity more often comes when there is healthy patience in making clearer whatever may have been communicated earlier. Experts in human relations have often al-

luded to what some classify as “I messages” and “you messages” which can occur in personal interactions. The “I messages” are truly acceptable, as they foster continual, positive conversation, because they are not intimidating. They’re a most valid way of expressing one’s feelings instead of making unfair, unjust accusations in a dialogue, without the benefit of the full picture. Yet, mere suspicions never solve anything; they only add more fuel to a fire that can be easily extinguished before major damage is caused! The “you messages” are negative in nature,

because they just point accusatory fingers at the other person, erroneously presuming what is not the true case, along with too many generalizations which kill the facts. The complainer usually blasts “You always…” or “You never…” which in either case is a false exaggeration. They shut the door for constructive understanding and dialogue, on account of creating intimidation! For personal and communal benefits, create and maintain a mature climate, a healthy ambiance of trust among those you deal with, avoiding at all costs any unnecessary, disruptive intimidation or destructive retaliation!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

The Boca Raton Tribune

Obituaries CHRISTOPHER J. COX

September 21, 1971 – December 25, 2014

World renowned musicians Tatiana Berman and Elena Klionsky made beautiful music together at The Chalfonte condominium in Boca Raton, as they performed a classical concert for over 70 attendees on Sunday, December 28th to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Violinist Berman and pianist Klionksy, both whom began playing at the age of five in their native Russia, collaborated on such works as “Sonata for Violin and Piano in D” by Jean Marie Leclair and Claude DeBussy’s “Clair de Lune”. Afterwards, guests enjoyed French coffee and pastries while mingling with the artists and enjoying the beautiful oceanfront setting.

This was the first in a series of three concerts to be performed by Ms. Klionsky, in which a portion of the proceeds will go to the Alzheimers Association, as her own father suffers from this debilitating disease. The next event, entitled “Chopin at the Chalfonte”, will be held on Sunday, January 25th at 4pm and will feature the piano music of Frederic Chopin, followed by afternoon tea and refreshments. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased by calling (561) 392-1530. To read more about Elena Klionsky, please visit her website at www.elenaklionsky.com.

“Into the Woods” for the Umpteenth Time

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

New Year’s Eve Celebration

Bob and I celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Pompano Beach Elks Lodge with friends, Kris and Michael Tadich. We enjoyed a great dinner of filet mignon and lobster tails and a great 5 piece band played dance music all evening. A lady at our table admired my new sparkly shoes and I sold them to her right off my feet. Luckily I had an extra pair with me.

Bob Beasley’s Birthday Celebration at La Nouvelle Maison My darling daughter, Melanie gifted Bob and I with two dinner certificates to two of Boca Raton’s hottest restaurants, the French, La Nouvelle Maison and next door, the Italian Trattoria Romana, both owned by the same group. We arrived at La Nouvelle Maison and were promptly seated at our table. We ordered a Pinot Grigio wine which was absolutely delicious and a french baguette with whipped butter arrived at our table. For dinner, Bob ordered the house special Dover Sole and I ordered homemade fettucini and lobster medallions. We started off with an appetizer of escargot which was totally delicious. The main courses were absolutely wonderful and the service impeccable. After dinner

our waiter, Adam Roth brought out a tray of delicious pastries for us to sample, a birthday gift from the restaurant to Bob. What an awesome evening.

Christmas at the Wick Theater and Dinner at Friend’s House Christmas Day was a lot of fun. Bob and I went to see Mame at the Wick Theater with Leslie Uggams. It was a fun and energetic show which we truly enjoyed. Leslie Uggams can still belt out a great song. We met the cast of the upcomimg show of La Cage Aux Folle in the lobby during the intermission, photo enclosed.

After the show we went to dinner at friend’s home, Kris and Michael Tadich along with 15 other friends for a great dinner consisting of stone crabs, jumbo shrimp, filet mignon, baked ham, chicken and stuffing and much more. Great Christmas memories spent with friends.

“Into the Woods” is not my favorite Stephen Sondheim musical. After about the tenth time of hearing the refrain “Into the Woods” again I get tired of it. I get it. All kinds of stuff happens in Grimm Fairy Tales’ weird woods. On the other hand the movie version of “Into the Woods” has a killer cast; not the least of which is Meryl Streep at her witchiest. I could watch the many moods of Meryl all day long. She is clearly relishing playing the bad girl; the wicked witch. On the other hand we have Johnny Depp, camping it up as the big, bad wolf. For one thing Depp is not big. And in his silly makeup he is about as threatening as a housecat. The rest of the “Woods” is a mixed bag. I liked little Red Riding Hood, played by newcomer Lilla Crawford. I loved Anna Kendrick’s Cinderella, who figures in all the tales. In the stage musical the Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) are central to both the comedy and the pathos of James Lapine’s script. To my mind Emily Blunt can do no wrong, and as the childless wife cursed by the Witch, she tugs at the heart strings.

Also recurring in the story is Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) of beanstalk and giant fame, and Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy), who lets down her hair to let up her lover. “Into the Woods” is directed by Rob Marshall, who fared much better with the screen version of “Chicago.” In his defense “Woods” is a much more dense, complicated show. It looks amazing for the most part, but for me the definitive version stars one Bernadette Peters as the Witch and Joanna Gleason as the Baker’s Wife. Rating: 

Assigning Responsibility When I have a project that requires only my expertise, I find I can easily focus on producing an excellent outcome. If a project requires an entire team, however, achieving excellence becomes more complex. A team typically has multiple people with different perspectives, experiences and ideas about how something should be approached and completed. To make matters even more complicated, team leaders, including myself, often forget the simple step of assigning responsibilities for a desired outcome. Two commonly used statements come to mind that apply here. One says, “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” In other words, people with a variety of skills, gifts and abilities can accomplish more collectively than if they were to operate independently of one another. Thus it is important to delegate tasks and assignments according to the team members’ respective strengths and capabilities. The second statement is, “None of us is as smart as all of us.” Sometimes it is tempting for leaders to want to control all planning and decision-making, confident they know what is best. But by trusting the team’s collective intelligence, a better outcome can be achieved than the leader could have envisioned. This principle of assigning responsibilities to different members of the team according to their abilities is one that appears repeatedly in the Bible. For instance, after their escape from Egypt, the Israelite nation’s leaders were confronted with the taunting task of governing them. Moses was the leader, but he could not do all the decisionmaking by himself.

Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, was the one that recognized the need to share the burden of settling legal disputes. He told Moses, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone” (Exodus 18:17). Jethro proceeded to recommend how Moses could properly delegate judicial responsibilities, reserving only the most difficult cases for himself. Later God established procedures for caring for the Israelites’ worship center, dividing duties among the men who had formally been appointed as priests. Numbers 18:1 states, “The LORD said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary.” Aaron was a very capable leader, but to get the work done properly it needed to be shared by others. It can be tempting for leaders to try and do all of the work. After all, they know exactly what they want to have done and also know exactly how they would like to have it accomplished. But one of the many advantages of a team is having a number of individuals that can contribute to the effort and share the load, preventing it from becoming overwhelming for one person. As Ecclesiastes 4:8-12 declares, “There was a man all alone…. There was no end to his toil…. Two are better than one because they have a good return for their work…. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” If you desire your team to excel, be certain to specifically divide responsibilities, then hold everyone accountable for completing the work. Until next week!

Three Years? “The law is an ass” originates in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that “the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”. Picture this: The professional young lady after a few years realizes that her husband is a drunk. Well, no, not just a Saturday night, Sunday football afternoon drunk but an alcoholic; a person who would rather make love to a Bud Light than to her. Best of times and worst she finds herself pregnant, and decides to hold on a bit to see if their little girl would encourage husband to changes his ways. Surprise, surprise…it did not. A divorce ensued. The parties fought over child care issues. The wife sought and got temporary exclusive parenting rights and the husband had supervised visitation only because of his alcoholism and the Judge’s fear of the husband driving his car with the child a passenger. The final hearing in the divorce case was set to start in about a month. The Husband’s lawyer had withdrawn for lack of payment. Word came though the Husband’s camp that he had fallen, cracked his head and was in a coma. The trial was cancelled; the husband in limbo as was the wife. “When can I get divorce,” she asked. After a brief visit with our Trust and Estates partner to confirm what I already knew I had to tell her that if her husband remained in

a coma, or became mentally incompetent as the result of his fall she would have to wait for three years after he was officially found to be incompetent to get divorced. I concluded that if he were to become incompetent he would have a guardian who could negotiate a marital settlement agreement with her, but the marriage could not be ended for three years under a Florida statute. I also told her that while she could bring an Incompetency case to court herself she could not be the guardian because they were in a divorce case against one another. Money was thin all around and not the real issue in the divorce case. The woman had a job with a reasonable paycheck but could not afford to start another case in probate court. All told she appears to be between a rock and a hard place. It also appears that there should be a more flexible path for a person in her situation, albeit unusual, to be able to go ahead with her life. Her income disables her from getting assistance from the local Legal Aid office. Who knows what happens next. Michael H. Bruce’s of Great Neck is Restaurateur to the Stars in West Boca Continue from page 1

President Bruce Zipes believed in the “word of mouth” advertising and that satisfied customers would spread the “word” around town. He only uses the highest quality ingredients and standards to meet the high expectations of his customers at his famous restaurant and bakery. Today, that tradition continues in his new bakery/ restaurant in the Boca Greens Shopping Plaza on U.S. 441, 19575 State Rd. 7, Boca Raton, Florida, where they have been open for 16 months with a new menu, bringing something different to the usually boring bagel stores, e.g. Bobka French toast, fresh lobster and jumbo shrimp salads, gourmet omelettes made with baby spinach, plumb tomatoes and choice of melted gouda, fontina or Brie cheese, waffles and pancakes made with buttermilk and eggs instead of just water, etc. Joan Rivers came in around August 2013 while she was staying at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, remembering the portrait

Bruce made of her in NYC and ordered the chunky lobster salad on brioche. When she left she told Bruce “I wish we had a Bruces in NYC where I live.” Bucky Dent is a regular too, along with a number of stars that stop in when they are visiting in South Florida. At Bruce’s, catering became the most renowned in NY. Patrons from Manhattan, Queen, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Long Island flocked to Bruce’s for all special occasions to include baked goods, custom catering or just to relax in the celebrated restaurant. When Westbury Music Fair needed a special cake to commemorate Bob Hope’s 75th birthday, Bruce invented the celebrity “look-a-like” cake. A recent sampling of portrait cakes included the likes of Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, Christie Brinkley, Cindy Crawford, Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, Tom Cruise, Heather Locklear, Howard Stern, Julio Iglesias and Mickey Mantle. Bruce has been seen on numerous television shows including:

The Regis Philbin Show, The Today Show, The John Stewart Show, Fox and Friends, The Food Channel and major news shows on NBC, CBS, and ABC. Bruce’s has also won the prestigious award from the Metro Channels “NY Eats” for the best challah in New York City. Write ups have also appeared in Newsday, the NY Post, The Daily News, and NY Magazine. Over the years, Bruce has been proud to be associated with hundreds of celebrities and luminaries from all walks of life. Some of Bruce’s Highlights include: Hilary Clinton visited Bruce’s – “Love the chocolate ruggies”; Bruce appeared on The Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”: Bruce’s donated cakes to Derek Jeter’s Turn Two Foundation; Bruce made a portrait cake for George Steinbrenner’s birthday; Bruce created an anniversary cake for “The Howard Stern Show”; Bruce appeared on The Today Show with a portrait cake and new dessert cookbook. Palm Beach County also gave Bruce’s a

Jan Smolders Releases “Alone in Boca Raton” A young Mexican immigrant builds a new life in the United States with the help of a local business owner, only to have that life disrupted by chaotic and dangerous events in the new novel by Jan Smolders, “Alone in Boca Raton” (published by iUniverse). Mario Osorio, a young Mexican textile engineer, travels to the U.S. on a temporary work permit. When an attractive, middleaged Floridian business owner named Erin Brown takes a strong personal interest in Mario and proposes to sponsor him for a green card and make him a manager in her textile business, the two enter a deal that allows Mario to legally stay in the U.S. But matters complicate for Mario when he hears news of his mother, Gloria, escaping from her husband, José Mario, in Mexico

and immigrating illegally to New Mexico with her two children, Anita and Roberto. Mario selflessly lends a helping hand to his mother and step-siblings by agreeing to temporarily hide them in a location close to his home, risking his citizenship in the process. But their safe haven may not last long; Mario finds himself faced with drug traders, shady deals with a Mexican contractor and crooked lawyer, and the possible deportation of his family - all while romance blossoms between him and Jenny, Erin’s daughter. In “Alone in Boca Raton,” Mario must face his demons while attempting to reunite his family and preserve the life he built for himself in Florida. www.bocaratontribune.com

“perfect” inspection, said the West Boca News. Bruce’s is deeply committed and firmly believes in community service, whether donating a dinner for 100 retuning Gulf War veterans and their wives, making a road more attractive in Great Neck, being a major sponsor for the Great Neck Art Center or daily donations to senior citizen, group homes or soup kitchens. Bruce’s was honored to be the recipient of the Giraffe Award, Great Neck’s most prestigious award for continued outstanding community service. As former President George Bush Sr. said in his letter of commendation to Bruce’s: “You are to be commended for your spirit and deep involvement in your community. Our Nation thrives on civic pride and you are a local institution that Great Neck (and now Boca) can be proud of!”

Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. And some of that "extra" content you could do without, such as saturated fats, including unwanted omega-6 fatty acids, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs commonly found in fish. Freezer Test Proves Purity Omax3® was shown in lab tests to be 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. Put a pill of your store bought brand of omega3 in the freezer overnight. Then put Omax3® Ultra PureTM in the freezer overnight. The difference is clear. The store bought brand will be cloudy, even a solid white. This is caused by the bad fats and toxins solidifying, which your body doesn’t need. Omax3® will remain clear, which equals safety and effectiveness. sports Lynn Basketball Remains Unbeaten in SSC Play with Win at Tampa Lynn University’s men’s basketball team (8-2) is off to its first 2-0 start in Sunshine State Conference action since the 2011-12 season after Saturday night’s 69-63 win over Tampa (6-2). The Fighting Knights erased multiple deficits to hand the Spartans their second SSC loss of the season and fifth defeat overall. Pavle Raickovic led the team in scoring with a game-high 15 points that was matched by UT’s Eugene McCrory. Lynn took the lead first, 6-2, but Tampa responded with a 7-0 run to lead 9-6 at the 17:41 mark. Tampa led by six at 9:49 but an 11-0 run by the Blue & White would find Lynn ahead by five, 23-18, with just over seven minutes to play. An 8-0 run by UT had Lynn trailing 26-23 but Raickovic’s layup at 1:33 brought the game within one. Tampa closed out the half on a 7-0 run to lead 33-25 at the break.

Lynn shot 35.5 percent from the field in the opening half and was led by Raickovic who had a team-high 10 points. Tampa shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the half but just 54.5 percent from the free throw line in 11 trips to the charity stripe. McCrory had a half-high 12 points and four rebounds for the Spartans. Tampa took an eight-point lead, 40-32, with 16:24 remaining in the game but Lynn slowly battled back to take its own eightpoint lead, 52-44, with 8:19 to go. Ben Berry drained a three-pointer with 2:17 on the clock. An 8-2 run by UT would make it a two-point game in the Blue & White’s favor with under a minute left in regulation. Lynn connected on seven free throws over the final minute to pull away for a six-point win. Berry had a team-best 13 points in the

second half shooting three-for-four from downtown. Russell Wilson andCory Thomas added six points each in the half while Berry pulled down six rebounds. Lynn shot an impressive 65.2 percent in the second half and held the Spartans to 32.1 percent. Lynn edged Tampa 18-13 in rebounds and outscored UT by 14 points in the final 20 minutes. 22 of Lynn’s second half points came off the bench while Tampa scored just two from its reserves. The Fighting Knights shot 48.1 percent from the field overall and made 11-of-15 shots from the charity stripe in the victory. Raickovic had a team-high 15 points with four rebounds and three blocks. Berry scored all of his 13 points in the second half while adding six rebounds. Harrison had a game-high five steals.

Stellar Second Half Gives Owls 79-63 Win At Fiu The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team outscored rival FIU 45-27 in the second half to earn a 79-63 win in its Conference USA opener in Miami on Sunday. The Owls (7-5, 1-0 C-USA) were led by Shaneese Bailey’s career-high 29 points, 18 of which came in the first half. The sophomore scored FAU’s first 16 points of the contest in the first 6:33, making

each of her first seven field goal attempts. Freshman Melinda Myers also set a new mark in her young career with 13 points, including eight down the stretch to help the Owls pull away for the win. Junior Ali Gorrell also reached double-digits with ten points and led FAU with seven assists and six rebounds. Freshman Lauren Williams tacked on 11 points and recorded four steals.

FIU (3-9, 0-1 C-USA) led by as many as six with 3:26 left in the first half, but FAU chipped away at the lead, tying the game before the Panthers made a layup with nine seconds left to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room. Bailey and Myers combined to score the first six points of the second half to earn a one-point lead before sophomoreKat Wright buried back-to-back 3-pointers that

put the Owls on top for the final time. The defense in the second half setup the comeback for the Owls as they kept the Panthers from making a basket over the last 5:27 of the game. By that point, however, FAU had amassed an 11 point lead that would not be relinquished.

Fau Men’s Basketball Pulls Away From Jacksonville 68-50 The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team used a 40-point second half to defeat Jacksonville 68-50 on Tuesday night. Solomon Poole scored 19 points in his return to his hometown. Poole hit a three-pointer and converted a Marquan Botley alley oop for the first five points of the game. Kelvin Pennscored

on a putback to give the Owls (7-4) a 7-0 lead. JU (5-11) scored eight straight points to take the lead. That pattern remained for the rest of the half, FAU building a lead, followed by the Dolphins fighting back. The Owls led by four at the 12-minute mark of the second half before going on a 15-1 run to take a 54-38 lead. The margin

remained at least 14 for the rest of the game. Botley missed several minutes of action with a busted lip, then returned to score all 14 of his points in the second half. He also tied his career high with eight assists. Penn had his second straight double-digit rebound effort, pulling down 11.
