Community Boca Raton Fine Art Show Announces Budding Artist Competition Winners

Continue from page 1

The focus of the Boca Raton Fine Art Show™ is visual arts, diversity, fostering art education among young students, and community enrichment. It is produced by

Hot Works, LLC, Fine Art and Fine Craft Shows, a professionally run fine art fair by a show director with a national standing and reputation. As part of our commitment to bring art education into the community, a Budding Artist Competition for grades 6-12 or ages 9-19 was integrated into the art fair. Sponsored by the Institute for the Arts & Education, Inc., the art fair’s 501c3 non-profit arm, young artists were invited to apply with their original and personally handmade art in all forms of medium. This year’s Budding Artist contest included 47 entries from 16 area schools; all entries were publicly displayed under the “Budding Artist” tent. It exposed young artists to the opportunity of creating his/her art for a living – doing something he/she loves to do, and, most importantly, how to do it. The competition gave budding artists a golden opportunity to begin learning the rules of being part of a professional art show and exhibition. The young artists and their families at-

Boca Man Sells Domain Name For $8.8 Million There’s not much from the 90s adult industry that has a resale value worth millions today. Still, a Boca Raton man managed to sell the domain Porno.com for $8.8 million to an unnamed company in Prague. To be exact, it sold for $8,888,888.88 — an all cash deal handled by Escrow.com. The domain was sold by Rick Schwartz, the self-proclaimed Domain King, who bought Porno.com from a college student for $42,000 in 1997. Despite its name, the site doesn’t exactly

feature porn, instead it redirects traffic to other adult sites, which has made Schwartz somewhere around $10 million since the late 90s, according to a news release. Brandon Abbey, president of Escrow.com, said the deal was one of the largest domain sales the company has ever handled. Schwartz said he plans to sell domains like 399.com, 750.com, 899.com and 12 other three-number domains that are heavily in demand in China. For instance, 345.com recently sold for $800,000, he said.

tended the event on Sunday afternoon, when the winners were announced at 3pm. There were $250 in cash awards provided to four young winners, along with a beautiful, colorful two-foot-long ribbon. Criteria for judging the youth art were based on technique/execution and originality, which is similar to the criteria for the judging of the professional artist awards. In presence for the Budding Artist awards announcement was Council and Community Redevelopment Agency Member Robert Weinroth who represented City of Boca Raton and showed his support for the art fair and this program. Mr. Weinroth was there to personally congratulate each Budding Artist winner. Artist Michael Braun, Digital, also gave a short presentation as to how he transformed his artwork from fiber to digital art, which is the art form he makes today. Coincidentally, Michael Braun had something in common with one of the Budding Artists, Dominic Mattioli of Monarch High School, who entered a painting of Jimi Hendrix. Michael Braun was the fiber artist who designed Jimi Hendrix pants in his famous on-stage photo, along with making clothes for other musical artists including Sonny & Cher, Greg Allman, and Sly of Sly & the Family Stone. Following the awards announcements, there was another positive outcome from the Budding Artist program. The artwork made by the Budding Artists was so compelling, original and well done that patrons were interested in purchasing some of the student’s art. A Budding Artist may or may not have won a prize in the competition, but a couple

of them sold their art – which is the goal to becoming a professional artist! Congratulations to the Budding Artist winners and to the Budding Artists who sold their art! For the budding artists who did not win a prize, it is important that they were communicated that even the best artists do not get accepted into the best art shows all the time; that art is subjective, and if this is something they love to do, they should not give up, but to also congratulate the winners. The Boca Raton Fine Art Show™ provided these students with an unmatched learning experience, and exposed families toartwork that they would not have otherwise seen. Young artists were encouraged to speak with the artists in the show – all professionals – and to ask them questions about participating in art shows as a career. 2015 Boca Raton Fine Art Show™ Budding Artist Award Winners Are as Follows: One $100 Best Budding Artist: Kirsten Kelly, Painting, Age 17, A. W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, West Palm Beach Three $50 Budding Artist Awards of Excellence: Shelby Goldring, Mixed Media, Age 15, A. W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, West Palm Beach Craig Ira, Drawing, Age 14, University School of Nova Southeastern University, Davie Jessica Pan, Drawing, Age 16, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland

Boater Injured in ICW Crash

By Fred Hamilton

Boca Raton police are investigating whether alcohol and speed were factors in a boating crash on the Intracoastal Waterway on Sunday that sent a Delray Beach man to the hospital. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. when Georgio Vogiatzis lost control of his 2013 33-foot Deep Impact Center Console after hitting a wake and slammed bow first into the Boca Quay seawall at the end of Jeffrey Street. “It was a loud bang, sounded maybe like a firework,” said Roy Savigliano, Jr., 51, a

retired firefighter who rushed to help out the driver until paramedics arrived on the scene. ”He must have hit the seawall so hard that he was ejected toward the front of the boat.” Rescue workers transported Vogiatzis, who residents said was pretty banged up, to Delray Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. His condition was not known at press-time. There were several boats in the water, a regular pastime on weekends, residents said. Residents in the area and Fire-Rescue workers say the stretch of water, which has a 30 mile per hour speed limit, can be dangerous. “It’s extremely busy,” said Savigliano, 51, who retired three years ago from Lauderhill Fire-Rescue. “It’s like I-95 on the water.” And it can be deadly when multiple boats on the water at once send waves bouncing off the “If a boater is not ready for it, or if they’re not experienced, and they don’t throttle back, usually there are going to be some ramifications from that,” Division Chief Norm Engel said.

EDITORIAL By C. Ron Allen

We Can Lose with Dignity In the days leading up to Sunday’s matchup between the Patriots and the Seahawks, I knew the game had the potential to be the greatest Super Bowl of all time when all was said and done. As I diehard New England fan, I also knew the Patriots were in for a fight against the Seahawks. But good lord, I did not expect the melee that occurred in the closing seconds of the epic game. It was downright embarrassing. (By the way, the odds of a fight on the field were 18 to 1.) With the Patriots having secured another title with an interception just moments before to seal what was a 28-24 victory, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was attempting to simply take a knee with 20 seconds remaining at his 5-yard line. Seattle linebacker Bruce Irvin and Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski got in a shoving match and then Patriots guard Ryan Wendell pushed Irvin from behind by, fueling the flames. As I told family and friends before kick-

off, we all knew who would take home the Lombardi trophy. Still, regardless of who came out on top, we would all be privileged to watch these two teams do battle. To his credit, and I’m sure it was at the urging of a publicist, Irvin, on Monday, apologized “to all of the younger kids for my actions last night.” He said he was overcome with emotion after seeing teammate Michael Bennett get hit and was only trying to protect his brother and it got out of hand. But what Irvin has not yet realized, is this is a job – a profession – and there is a certain conduct that is expected from professionals. I understand his emotions. Tempers were tight on both sides. Imagine being a member of the Patriot’s organization going into that game. They went in under a cloud after two weeks of questioning whether Brady and Belichick cheated in Deflategate. Is that considered pressure? This is no different from what my sister did during a game of monopoly, when I was trouncing her, she flipped the board

and walked away. Would that be considered brattish? A dear friend said that’s Irving’s style. Well, while Irving’s style may be popular with many fans, that type of personality won’t work very well in a world beyond professional sports. It was evident there were two athletic cultures on the field on Sunday. The Patriots stayed focused on the game because they were professional football players, as was evidenced by their plays and actions. The Seahawks played pretty well, too, but the contrast in styles was a stark difference. For example, Sherman mugged for the cameras in the second half. And after scoring a third-quarter touchdown that put his team up 10 points, receiver Doug Baldwin made a lewd gesture, appearing as if he were pulling down his pants to do something he might do in the bathroom, not on the field. He was hit with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Baldwin said he directed the gesture at an unnamed

Patriots player. And there was Irvin’s saga. After the game, Gronkowski said that those little fights tend to happen, especially in a game with such emotion. I differ. The super bowl is not any regular game. With an average of 114.4 million people watching around the world, there’s a lot of discipline and decorum that’s expected during the most watched event in American TV history. Irvin became the first player in Super Bowl history to be ejected from the game. Is that the record you want your kids or even young people, who look up to you as their hero, to have long after you’re gone? But then, I wonder if that anger was directed more toward his coaching staff than the opposing team. In the end of Super Bowl XLIX, the only things deflated were Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Facing Your Tasks Realistically! Scheduling regular daily activities is just as important and essential as special, major life occurrences. The frequency of performing certain functions is no guarantee that they shall always be executed in the most effective and timely fashion, and in a reasonable amount of time. Several persons repeatedly complain of not being able to accomplish everything that’s needed on a daily basis. Yet, all along, they are the only ones capable of taking control of their schedule and, thus, the primary cause of such inability! People who establish and follow a consistent routine for the accomplishment of their regular activities, are the ones also capable of carving needed time for the extras that life also inflicts through surpris-

ing emergencies requiring extra time and attention. It would be great if all that we carefully plan could turn out the way we envision, and that it’s supposed to be. Yet, experience reminds us that such is not always the case; many good things will emerge, as expected and hoped for, but so also do several unexpected situations which demand much that is unexpected, not to mention additional problems that complicate things! This is partly why using one’s moments wisely, being punctual in all activities without being a slave of the clock, are essentials that need to be uppermost in a person’s regular planning. One never knows if the car will start when one has to leave the house, or if the traffic will be free from

congestion, or even if any sudden emergency will adversely invade and affect one’s program. Being better prepared will not eliminate the unpleasant surprises, but at least it can better allow one to handle the barriers that have appeared, or the unexpected problems that have emerged. Life does not force routine events on anyone; most of these are already expected and, hopefully, planned to be followed by each individual. But there are others which may suddenly appear, forcing manifold alterations in what had been anticipated as part of one’s regular routines! Not to be forgotten is also the unique disposition of every person toward the tasks of each new day. Certain habits need to be effectively maintained so as to ensure the

full benefits that such discipline dispenses. No one will operate at the highest possible level in any function, by going too late to bed the night before; one’s body expects a certain number of hours of rest for maximum effectiveness in the performance of duties. Ultimately, it’s one’s disciplined life that can guarantee effectiveness in the travail of any task, in the fulfillment of any duty, in the execution of whatever task, whether great or small. It pays to plan well and follow those directives to where they lead. Any success is vitally connected to small things as well as to major considerations. Your careful planning can be viewed as one of those small items which, nevertheless, confer big rewards!

“Black Sea” Best Submarine Suspense Flick since “Das Boot”

Charlotte Beasley

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

JAFCO Luncheon At St. Andrews. Country Club I attended the JAFCO, Jewish Foster Care luncheon this past week at the fabulous St. Andrews Country Club with approximately 400 other women. The room is awesome and JAFCO had many vendors selling exquisite jewelry, clothing and handbags. I ran into so many familiar faces and friends, Jan Savarick, Phyllis Sandler, Elyssa Kupferberg, Chris Miller, the President of Boca Raton Jafco Chapter,

Charlotte Beasley, Elyssa Kupferberg and Marilyn Gardner

Sarah Franco , Director of Jafco and many others. The lunch consisted of a cream of tomato soup, entree of stuffed chicken, salmon and salad and a dessert of three sorbets. The speaker was author. M. Gary Neuman whose book, “The Truth about Cheating” Why Men Stray and what you can do to prevent it sure kept the huge audience fascinated.

“Black Sea” is the best submarine suspense movie since “Das Boot.” That is a bold statement, but “Black Sea” is a bold film, anchored by Jude Law in one of his best performances ever. Law plays submarine Capt. Robinson. In order to pay off some debts, Capt. Robinson, who has lost his job of 30 years, his wife and his son, takes on the risky business of leading a submarine crew in the Black Sea in search of a scuttled Nazi U Boat rumored to be carrying $40 million in gold bars. If they find the booty, the proceeds after 40 percent going to the backer of the mission, will be divided evenly among captain and crew. To keep an eye on things, Daniels (Scoot McNairy), who represents the investors, is along for the ride. Capt. Robinson finds a ragtag old submarine and assembles a ragtag crew of misfits and one 18-year-old boy, Tobin (Bobby Schofield). The crew, half U.K. and half Russian, represents various stereotypes. There is Fraser (Ben Mendelsohn), the possibly psychotic Australian; dour Russians Morozov

(Grigory Donrygin) and Blackie (Konstantin Khabenskly), crusty Irishman Reynolds (Michael Smiley) and an old-timer (David Threlfall). Basically it’s a recipe for disaster. We are not disappointed, for things start going wrong right away, and get worse and worse. Director Kevin Macdonald keeps the suspense tight, and despite the familiar conventions of the plot, there are surprises. If you are claustrophobic as I am, “Black Sea” will make you uncomfortable and grateful you will never have to undergo such a misbegotten undersea voyage. Rating: 1/2

How to Use Your Words for Good

The Dumbest Lawyers and Clients in the World

The words you speak every day carry more power than you realize. They have the potential to take your life – and the lives of those around you – in either a positive or a negative direction. To use your words for good, you must first begin focusing on certain categories of words while working to eliminate others from your vocabulary altogether. Specifically, decide to create a habit of speaking words of praise and encouragement. At the same time, choose to steer clear of any kind of gossip or complaining. When you do, you will see a positive difference in your life and in the effect you have on other people. Here’s a quick look at each of these types of words to help you get started: Praise – Words of praise shift your attention away from selfishness and toward God’s goodness. Try starting every day by praising God for who he is and for the blessings in your life. Let those words settle into your heart and become part of the wellspring you speak from for the rest of the day. Encouragement – Everyone needs encouragement. As you begin speaking from a God-focused heart, encouraging words will come naturally. You will begin seeing other people as God sees them, which will make you want to use your words to help them grow in that direction. When you stop focusing on others’ shortcomings and instead become a source of encouragement, you are cooperating with God in building them

into the people he wants them to be. On the negative side of the equation, there are two major categories of words that can sabotage your life and your relationships. Speaking these words is like ingesting small, daily doses of poison: Gossip – Gossip, in all forms, is destructive. Not only does it tear others down, it also deteriorates people’s trust in you. When you gossip, you are engaging in an activity that has no possible end result but harm. Others are hurt, and the noxious words seep into your soul, creating internal toxicity. Complaints – Complaints become selffulfilling prophecies. If you feed the small irritations in your life with words, they will grow into more substantial problems. The energy you spend focusing on them gives them heightened potential to derail your best life. To explore the power of your words in more depth, be sure to check out my new book, Tongue Pierced: How the Words You Speak Transform the Life You Live (David C. Cook, 2015). There is nothing wrong in planning a strategy when one is engaged in a divorce case, lawyers and clients do it all the time within the bounds of advocacy. One strategy would be to undermine the credibility of the opponent by uncovering his or her lies or overreaching in an attempt to poison the waters of the mind of the judge against the other side. In a recent Palm Beach County case, however the lawyers and clients all agreed on the issues before the court, and then presented their case to an experienced Palm Beach County Judge. The Parties, and perhaps their lawyers may be on the way to jail or disbarment as a result of their cooperation. The Husband and wife were involved in a very lucrative business in which they both worked and shared the profits. Their stash of money grew exponentially in the usual way and in one very unusual way: they never paid any income tax on the profits of their business. It is not unusual for lawyers to come upon such a situation. The lawyers will explain to their clients that the case could not be tried before the court without jeopardizing their freedom once the IRS found out what was going on and further suggested that the Parties settle. The lawyers should,

in writing, each further suggest to their client that they should nevermore cheat on their taxes. Lawyers and clients share confidentiality when discussing a client’s past crimes, but when a lawyer is told by a client about future crimes it is the lawyer’s duty is to turn in their clients. However, in the Palm Beach County case both lawyers and their clients boldly put into evidence and argument that the major issue in the case was whether or not the clients were being fair and accurate in dividing the tax free cash; that is both lawyers put into evidence the crimes of their clients. The judge properly chastised the sham case and criminal activities of the Parties and dismissed the claims and counterclaims denying the divorce on the grounds that the Parties marriage was not “irretrievably broken” as the couple had remained living together and were cooperating on the heretofore mentioned evidence. Apparently no criminal charges or Bar grievances have been brought against the hapless couple and their lawyers. The Husband and Wife have taken an appeal to the Fourth District Court of Appeals on the Courts failure to allow them their divorce.

finance control By Christina A. Karas

Am I Prepared? Many women end up managing their finances alone at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, the first time many of them get involved with financial matters is during a crisis, such as a spouse’s death or divorce. We’ve prepared a list of thought-provoking questions that pertain to financial fitness and crisis preparedness. It will be time well spent to review this list, determine what you have already done and talk with your Financial Advisor about any issues that affect you and/or your family. Asset Management • Do I know where my assets are located? • Will my retirement assets provide a comfortable and secure retirement for my life expectancy? • Do I have a well-diversified portfolio? • Are my investments appropriate in today’s economy? • Are my assets titled properly? • Do I have an emergency fund? • Am I taking advantage of techniques to reduce my taxes? Estate Planning • Do I have a current will? • Have I determined what I will owe in estate taxes? • Have I funded my estate-tax liability?

• Have I explored and taken advantage of wealth-transfer techniques? • Do I wish to provide for charitable giving? Are my power of attorney and living will up to date? Debt Management • Do I know my credit rating? Could I get a loan if I applied? Medical/Insurance Planning • Do I have enough insurance coverage for medical expenses? • To provide for disability/long-term care? • To provide for family members’ security? • To fund estate-tax liability? And... • Have I coordinated my advisors’ (attorney, CPA, banker) activities? • What changes in my life are likely to occur within the next three years? • Do I know the status of my parents’ financial situation and the implications for my financial well-being? • Would I be prepared for a family emergency if it happened tomorrow?

Gov. Scott Proposes Cutting Taxes On Cellphones, Cable TV, Textbooks By Dwellie Striggles

Reducing cellphone and television taxes would save the average resident with a $100 cell phone bill $3.60 a month or about $43 a year, under a proposal from Gov. Scott. Scott stopped by the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce on Friday and announced his goal to cut a little more than $400 million in state cellphone and television taxes. “If you’re spending more than that, you’ll get more money back,” Scott told those gathered. “But that’s a lot of money back in people’s pockets.” The governor’s $77 billion budget plan for 2015-16 includes $673 million in tax cuts. It is a reduction of roughly $100 million in spending from the current year. The biggest proposed tax cut, $470 million, would come from reducing the communications services tax from 9.17 percent to 5.57 percent. Most Floridians, on average, pay 9.17 percent on non-residential landlines, cellphones, and other various services not including satellite services, which increases taxes to about 13.17 percent. Florida wireless service taxes are among the

February 6 - 12, 2014

highest in the country behind Washington state, Nebraska and New York. In addition to decreasing taxes on cellphones and TV, Scott is proposing to eliminate sales tax on college textbooks. This would help college students taking five classes a semester save about $170 per year, he said. Ashley Herbert, a graduate student at Florida Atlantic University, appeared with Scott and heralded his planned textbook tax cut. “Applied to college students, these tax cuts are going to be extremely beneficial,” Herbert said. Scott was able to propose boosting education spending as well as tax cuts thanks to an improving economy that is pumping more tax revenue into state coffers. “We’re going to do the things and we’re going to have the safety nets to take care of our families,” Scott said. “But we know it’s your money. It’s not government money.” The final decision on Scott’s proposed 2015-2016 “KEEP FLORIDA WORKING” budget lies with the Florida Legislature. The legislative session starts March 3.

Local High School Students Attend John Maxwell Leadership Seminar

By Fred Hamilton

More than a dozen local high school students attended a leadership conference led by business leadership and management expert John C. Maxwell recently. The seminar, which was broadcast to more than 300 locations around the world, was held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts/Crest Theatre Old School Square. It featured three highly respected speakers in the field of leadership excellence including: Maxwell, Linda Kaplan Thaler, and Tim Sanders. “Mr. Maxwell said that, ‘Good leaders ask great questions that inspire others to dream more, think more, learn more, do more and become more’” said Sabina Louis-Jean, a student at Atlantic High school and a member of Atlantic All Star Leadership Academy, a mentoring program on campus. “I learned that the key to unlock the door to success is by asking questions but at the same time asking the right ones.” The students received workbooks and had an opportunity to network with others. Louis-Jean said she and his peers had an opportunity to gain insight from each speaker as they inspired, and shared their expertise to help future leaders expand their capacity to lead. “Attending this seminar added thoughts to my mind that may change my life around,” she said. “It inspired me to get up and stop watching depressing news every morning and achieve something not because you believe it but because you can do it.” The experience was made possible by Apex Empowerment, a newly formed South Florida business entity focused on leader-

ship development and coaching. Apex Empowerment hosted the John Maxwell Company’s L2: Learn - Lead™ simulcast event at Old School Square. Delray Beach was one of a few hundred selected locations around the country that was permitted to simulcast the event. “John Maxwell’s teachings are perfect for those individuals who are still looking to and/or need to grow,” said Lee Bersch, founder of Apex Empowerment. “No matter what business you are in, your product is people. And strong leadership is knowing how to positively influence people.” Bersch also told the crowd about future leadership training opportunities, seminars and classes available in South Florida. Robert Dodd, program coordinator for KOP Mentoring Network, which sponsors the program at Atlantic High School, said the idea of inviting the young leaders to the half-day premiere event is part of the vision his organization has for effecting positive transformational change in the community. “As a mentoring organization, we are committed to providing leadership resources and opportunities to our local young people, a number of whom have never received training in leadership,” Dodd said. “So, we are so grateful to Apex Empowerment for making this possible to our students.” Maxwell was recognized six consecutive years as the number one leadership expert in the world by Inc. He is a legendary speaker for Fortune 500 companies including Delta Airlines, Dupont, Chick-fil-A and Microsoft. He also is the best-selling author of more than 75 books, with more than 22 million books sold. Sanders, CEO Net Minds, is an internet pioneer and best-selling author along with Linda Kaplan Thaler, Chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler and creative marketing genius behind successful campaigns such as the AFLAC Duck. Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. And some of that "extra" content you could do without, such as saturated fats, including unwanted omega-6 fatty acids, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs commonly found in fish. Freezer Test Proves Purity Omax3® was shown in lab tests to be 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. sports Strong Spring Season Opener by Lynn’s Men’s Golf Punxsutawney Phil forecast six more weeks of winter on Monday afternoon so it was only fitting Lynn University’s men’s golf team cooled off the competition after the first two rounds of the Titan Winter Invitational. The Fighting Knights are first out of 15 teams while newcomer Mateo Gomez sits in a tie for first place individually with a one-under par 143 total. Four teams battled for a tie of first place, with the Blue & White included, after posting team scores of 305. Despite bad weather coming in over the final 18 holes, Lynn (600) was able to post a 295 second round, two shots better than Webber (602) and four strokes ahead of Northwood (604). The recently arrived Gomez shot a oneunder par 71 to start the day on the par 72

Suntree Country Club course. He would follow with an even par 72 and is tied with Brad Grey of host Eastern Florida State College for the lead. Miguel Solorzano qualified for the tournament as an individual for Lynn and did not disappoint. The junior from Medellin, Colombia, is third with a 145 after shooting scores of 72-73. All of the Fighting Knights rebounded from a difficult opening 18 holes. Keith Greene made a three shot improvement with a two-round score of 151; Martin Cancino and Elliott Whitley logged four stroke improvements for scores of 152 and 154 and Jose Miranda had the biggest turnaround of five shots to post a 157.

FAU Announces 2015 Football Schedule

Florida Atlantic University’s football team will play a six-game home schedule, including three games against in-state foes, as announced today by Conference USA. The six-game home slate marks the first time since 2003, and just the third time in the program’s 15 seasons, that FAU has hosted six regular-season games. The schedule also features games against three first-time opponents and eight 2014 bowl eligible teams. “I’m excited to play three in-state teams, opening up with a marquee team at home against Miami,” said Charlie Partridge, FAU’s head football coach. “It’s exciting to have six home games for the first time in FAU’s FBS history and to play eight 2014 bowl-eligible teams is an honor and a sign of where our program is going.” The Owls open at Tulsa on Saturday, Sept. 5 and start the 2015 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 12 against the University of Miami. The following weekend FAU hosts Buffalo on Saturday, Sept. 19.

February 6 - 12, 2014

FAU begins the 2015 C-USA schedule on the road, at C-USA football newcomer Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 26. The fifth week of the season will be a bye week for the Owls before they return home to host Rice on Saturday, Oct. 10. Marshall, which won the inaugural Boca Bowl at FAU Stadium this past December, will return to Boca Raton on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Owls then travel to UTEP for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 24 and will serve as host to the 2015 Shula Bowl versus FIU, on Saturday, Oct. 31. FAU’s November slate starts on the road facing Western Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 7 and the Owls host Middle Tennessee, on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Owls complete their non-conference schedule by traveling to Gainesville, Fla., where they face Florida on Saturday, Nov. 21. The 2015 regular-season schedule concludes on Saturday, No. 28 at Old Dominion. www.bocaratontribune.com

Lynn Baseball Trumps Sailfish in Stadium Opener It was supposed to be a landmark day for Palm Beach Atlantic University following the opening of its new baseball stadium but Lynn University’s 19th-ranked baseball team played the spoiler with a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night. Max Watt and Bill Mendek combined for 15 strikeouts and Thomas Kain drove in two runs to help the Fighting Knights improve to 2-0 overall. Watt was impressive in his first career start for the Blue & White, tossing four scoreless innings while fanning seven batters with one walk and three hits allowed. He allowed only one Sailfish (0-1) to reach third base and ended his night with an emphatic exclamation mark by striking out two consecutive batters with runners on first and second. His opponent on the mound was just as impressive, allowing only one run in 6.1 innings of work. Michael Stemle served as the catalyst for the offense with a double down the right field line in the third inning. He was able to trot home from third base after Kain singled into shallow left field to make it a 1-0 ballgame. An All-American and national leader in earned run average from a year ago, Mendek stepped on the bump in the fifth and proved he could be in line for both accolades again this season. After a dropped pop fly led to a leadoff double, Mendek would set down two of the next three batters with K’s to maintain Lynn’s advantage. Stemle’s speed proved to be a game changer late in the contest. The senior centerfielder swiped two bases in the seventh, giving him four in the game, and then crossed home plate when Kain smacked a single through the left side of the infield. Kyle Schindler’s aggressiveness on the base path forced PBA into a poor throw at third and the junior second baseman made it 3-0. Matt Tietz added to the Fighting Knights’ cushion a batter later with a scorching single up the middle to give Lynn a 4-0 lead. Mendek had little trouble after his initial encounter with the Sailfish. He would strike out at least one batter in each of his five innings and set down all three batters via strikeout in the 8th frame. Stemle finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and Tietz 2-for-4 and a RBI.
