Tornado Wreaks Havoc in Boca By Danielle C. Armour
David Kahn was about to take his daughter to school Thursday morning when he heard what sounded like a bomb and felt the wind pick up. “I looked out the window and I saw two trees going by,” said Kahn, who moved to South Florida from Canada about three months ago. “I said, ‘Oh, my God, where’s my baby?’ It was scary, because the whole house was rattling.” The National Weather Service in Miami confirmed that a tornado moving at about 45 miles per hour touched down in the Woodfield Hunt Club near Yamato and Jog roads around 7:30 a.m.

Neighbors: Shooting Victim Was a Hard-Working Family man By Dwellie Striggles
For the last 14 years, Lucanes Joseph worked hard as a roofer at a local company. The 65-year-old father and grandfather often sent money to support relatives in his native Haiti, family members said. He was in the process of helping family members get a better life in the United States when tragedy struck on Friday. As Joseph was leaving for work, three men approached him in his driveway in the 800 block of Southwest Sixth Avenue, police and neighbors said. Two were wearing masks, one was not. “There was a struggle at some point and our victim was shot multiple times,” police spokesman Officer Jeff Messer said. Joseph was pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center. Police later arrested Harut Saroyan of Boynton Beach on first degree murder charges. Police said Harut is 20 years old but records indicate he could be as young as 18. He is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail without bail. Two others remain at large. Neighbors in the Rosemont Park community, south of Atlantic Avenue, are calling the shooting senseless. They say Joseph was a quiet person who kept to himself and cared for his family. Joseph’s generosity extended beyond his household, neighbors said. When Tim Graboski South Florida Roofing in Delray was hiring, Joseph once helped Joseph Senatus get a job there.
“He was like, ‘You know they’re hiring at my job and the only person I thought of was you,’” Senatus, 26, said. “When he said that, it got to me.” Senatus said he was eating breakfast when he heard screams. As he walked outside, he saw two of the attackers run away. It was too late, he said. Joseph was shot. Senatus said the third gunman, who was still at the crime scene, pulled his mask over his face and fired a shot at him. But Senatus ran. When the gunman finally left, Senatus said he returned to help Joseph. The Rev. Marcia Beam, who has been a resident next door since 1971, was taking her grandson to school when the crime occurred around 7 a.m. “All I saw was the gunfire and we ran in the house,” Beam said. “We stopped the car, I was getting ready to take him in and we ran into the house.” Beam said she was shocked by the tragedy on her street, which is generally a quiet neighborhood. Joseph leaves behind a wife, five children, and several grandchildren. “I just know I’m going to miss him,” said Joseph Joseph, the deceased’s youngest son. “When you’re the last kid, they usually have deep love for you. So yes, I’m going to miss him.” There have been eight murders in Palm Beach County this year including one in Delray Beach.
Tornado Wreaks Havoc in Boca

Continue from page 1 It lifted up and touched down again about three quarters of a mile away from the initial landing site. “Thursday’s storms were triggered by a cold front that clashed with the region’s warm air and the collision really got things going,” Meteorologist Dave Ross of the NWS told the Sun Sentinel. In just two minutes winds whirled between 90 and 100 miles per hour howling and screaming through the upscale community, uprooting trees and ripping mailboxes from their metal frames, downing power lines, and snapping fences leaving debris throughout the gated neighborhood. More than 300 residents throughout south Palm Beach County were left in the dark, according to Florida Power and Light. The power outages cancelled school in the affected area. Instead of playing on her day off from school, 11 year-old Sydney Stephenson

helped other residents cleanup their neighborhood. The screens around several pools were damaged and downed trees lined Victoria Way. “I just felt horrible because there was a tree that was on a house and it’s just horrible what happened,” Sydney told WPTV-Ch. 5. Some damage was more extensive. Marjorie Kent couldn’t fathom where to begin. The debris from the tornado pierced holes in her roof and shattered the glass top of her patio furniture. Some of it ended up in her pool. Trees crashed through the roofs of some homes. But the residents are thankful no one was injured in the two minutes that the twister ripped through their otherwise peaceful community. “The whole front of my house, it looks like the roof is completely gone,” Tim Moylan told WPLG- Ch-10. “Fortunately, no one got hurt.”

Dean Smith: A Great Innovator, A Gentleman, A Man of Integrity Just about a month after the University of North Carolina family lost television sports anchor Stu Scott, the Tar Heels are again mourning the death of legendary basketball coach Dean Smith. While attending college in Chapel Hill in the1980s, I saw him around campus during the week, and on Sundays, I attended Binkley Baptist Church where he was an ardent member. I had first-hand knowledge of his interactions with people both on and off the court. Coach Smith was a man of integrity, he respected everyone and was always gracious to people. He was more than a basketball coach to students. He had a tremendous relationship with his players. Michael Jordan credited Coach Smith as having the biggest influence on his life, next to his parents. “He was more than a coach - he was my mentor, my teacher, my second father,” Jordan said in a statement following his death on Saturday. “Coach was always there for
me whenever I needed him and I loved him for it. In teaching me the game of basketball, he taught me about life. My heart goes out to Linnea and their kids. We’ve lost a great man who had an incredible impact on his players, his staff and the entire UNC family.” In a career that spanned more than 40 years, Dean Edwards Smith coached the likes of Jordan, James Worthy, Kenny Smith Walter Davis, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, J.R. Reid, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison. He could remember the names of every player who played for him, from Jordan to the lowliest walk-on who never scored a point. He also could rattle off the names of every student manager, staff member, and names of their wives and children. I learned that he would write notes to them long after they no longer wore Carolina blue. He remembered them on birthdays and when they went for their first jobs, he was there to support them. Now, that’s class.
He also influenced the game and how it is played in ways that are unrivaled. His Four Corners time-melting offense led to the creation of the shot clock to counter it. He certainly changed the complexity of basketball. He was fiery and competitive yet humble and dignified, and he demanded that his players carry themselves the same way. Perhaps the single most poignant trait that impressed me about Coach Smith was his compassion for humanity. He believed in doing the right thing. It wasn’t long before I learned of his influence in helping to shape political and social views in North Carolina. At the urging of his pastor, the Rev. Robert Seymour, in 1964 Coach Smith pushed forward the Civil Rights movement. Then an assistant coach, he integrated a Chapel Hill restaurant, The Pines, in 1964 by sitting down to eat with a black divinity student and Rev. Seymour, a white preacher. His next project was to recruit blacks to his team and in 1967 made Charlie Scott
the first black scholarship athlete at North Carolina and one of the first at a major school south of the Mason-Dixon Line. He was against the death penalty, he stood for nuclear disarmament and he affirmed gays and lesbians. Coach Smith would take his players to Central Prison in Raleigh to scrimmage for the inmates and see the sad faces of the doomed on death row. He would get in the cells with the prisoners and gave the students a reality of how lucky they were. He also did not cover to pressure, not on the court nor from political forces. He was always the activist coach who was unafraid to ruffle feathers, whether from alumni or others. If Coach Smith wasn’t the last of his kind, he certainly was one of the last, a man from an era when coaches were less politically correct yet far more impactful. Sleep on Coach, rest in peace. C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@Delraybeachtribune.com or 561-665-0151.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
The Posture of Your Heart Society places far too much attention on appearances. That’s why the cosmetic and clothing industries have become exceedingly lucrative. Even deceased persons have to appear in their coffins as if they were just having a momentary nap, in full regalia, and with make-up, as if going to a formal party, or any other major event. Through the ages there have been many people who prefer to put much emphasis on externalities. Theirs has been a style of doing instead of being, of appearances instead of reality, because their hearts have not been in tune with enduring values! While it is true that it is reasonable to evaluate some people by the quality of some
tangible fruits they might exhibit, ultimately what truly counts is in the posture of their heart in rendering a service, or fulfilling an obligation. Is your heart truly the real motivator of your actions, and the factor that initiates and controls all your doings? Remember that it is from the heart that the issues of life flow. Generally, what is heartless tends to have limited impact, if any at all! Thus, may the posture of your heart supersede whatever you may manifest outwardly, as impressive as it might at first appear, and may what you show on the outside be a genuine, positive reflection of your heart’s response to a variety of situations you face.
Once that is the case, and you are sure of it, before finalizing a decision, any decision, consult your heart for a second opinion – hopefully the right opinion! Keep in mind also that the human heart is also viewed as “deceitful” and, thus, it cannot be fully trusted at all times. Yet, I am convinced by a truth enunciated by the great French thinker of the 17th century, Blaise Pascal, to the effect that “the heart has reasons that reason does not know.” So many sacrificial deeds toward fellow humans sometimes exceed reason, though they still remain the right thing to do, and often the only one worth attempting.
More than fifty years ago, when I first got into graduate school, a classmate of mine who had come from India, often greeted me with the question: “How is your soul?” This last word can be easily substituted by the term “heart.” In other words, “How is your heart?” A reasonable question for one to raise, and one worthy of a sincere reply! We may never hear others confront us with that question, but we can, ourselves, study and recognize the posture of our own heart towards those we interact with, as well and to the things which demand our attention. It’s a practice worth being developed and followed, if in full sincerity!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Elad National Supports Local High School Athletics
By CRA News Service
South Florida real estate developer Elad National Properties is helping local high school athletes gear up for their games. This week Elad presented Boca Raton Community High School with a $2,500 contribution to support the varsity boys’ basketball team. The contribution funded healthy meals before each game this season and supported the holiday basketball tournament in December. “Athletics are instrumental in balanced development for kids, but they are often overlooked and under-funded,” said Elad National Properties Senior Executive Officer, Bill Shewalter. “We’ve been building top quality projects in this community for 10 years, and at the same time supporting
the development of healthy communities in South Florida, especially in Boca Raton, our Palm Beach County home. Athletic programs like Boca Raton Community’s basketball team make points on more than a scoreboard – as a wholesome, healthy community.” Varsity Bobcat basketball coach Max Spinner accepted the donation on behalf of the school during the last home game of the season, which was also Senior Night. The team took on Atlantic High School and went on to defeat the Eagles in a 75-74 victory. The Varsity boys’ basketball team ended the season with a 14-9 record.
Daniel C. Flynn, a renowned breast cancer researcher with more than 20 years experience, will lead Florida Atlantic University into a new era of innovation as its vice president of research. He was selected after a national search that attracted 76 applicants, the university said. Flynn, who started Jan. 5, is a critical thinker with a deep background in academic scholarship, technology transfer, research integrity, research facilities oversight, faculty mentoring and student research at all levels, the university has announced. “We are hiring stellar faculty whose mere presence will be game-changers for the university, and their association with FAU will attract the best faculty and the brightest students,” said FAU President John Kelly.
“We are very fortunate to have attracted such an acclaimed researcher.” Flynn comes to South Florida from Delaware, where he is the associate dean for research at the University of Delaware, College of Health Sciences. He previously held positions as associate dean for research and economic development at the Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Penn., and director of cancer cell biology research and graduate training programs at West Virginia University in Morgantown’s Health Science Center. Further, he was appointed to numerous leadership roles at WVU, including director of cancer cell biology research and graduate training programs at the university’s Health Science Center. He also was deputy director of the university’s Mary Bab Randolph Cancer Center. His studies in breast cancer focused on how changes in cellular signals can affect the start and progression of breast cancer. He also was part of a research team that discovered a protein called AFAP1, which has a potential role in breast and prostate cancer. “FAU has very talented faculty that represent cutting-edge research in all its colleges,” Flynn said. “This is a very exciting opportunity for me personally, and I look forward to helping expand FAU’s research portfolio university-wide.”

Boca Raton Looking To Ban E-Cigarettes
It soon might be illegal to use you ecigarettes in public places where regular smoking is prohibited, according to a city ordinance proposed by Councilwoman Constance Scott. The proposal follows a similar ordinance passed in Delray Beach last month. Councilwoman Scott said she was at an outdoor concert when she got a whiff of some e-cigarette emissions, which convinced her that Boca Raton ought to follow Delray’s example.
“We are responsible to our citizens to do everything we can to protect them,” she told the Sun Sentinel. Scott said she has been downwind from ecigarette users, and it wasn’t pleasant. “Until the research has been done to determine they are not harmful (to those who are in the vicinity of e-cigarette users), I don’t want the residents exposed to potentially unhealthy carcinogens,” Scott told the Sun Sentinel. According to The American Heart Association, emission from e-cigarettes exposes nonsmokers to nicotine and several potentially toxic organic chemicals. The CIty of Boca Raton already prohibits cigar and cigarette smoking at some of its parks and sports fields. The proposal by Councilwoman Scott will not prohibit smoking in private residences, retail tobacco shops, designated guest rooms, stand-alone bars or other places where smoking is allowed.

was several convicts who provided tips that helped to find the suspects. It is not unusual for a criminal, who has a warrant for his arrest, to call Coleman and offer to turn himself in to him instead of being arrested by a street officer. “What sets Capt. Coleman apart from the other candidates was his integrity, his extensive leadership ability, his commitment to philanthropy and his ability to inspire individuals to perform beyond their perceived expectations, while encouraging them to become leaders,” said Robert Dodd, a resident and mentor, who nominated Coleman for the award. “We always wonder if he ever sleeps. He is always thinking of ways his actions can improve the city and its residents.” His community involvement separates him from his peers. He is a member of DARE 2 Be Great, a non-profit group that provides scholarships and mentoring opportunities to students who live in the city. He is also a member of Prep and Sports, which helps local high school football athletes showcase their skills in front of college recruiters by doing drills and workouts. Prep and Sports also helps the athletes with academics tutoring in the summer. Coleman could not be reached for comment. However in a news release, he said: “I am honored to be the recipient of this recognition by this respectable organization. KOPMN has done a lot for this community over the years and I am always impressed by the number of lives that are impacted each year.” KOP is a mentoring program for area youth ages 7 to 17. The non-profit has been reinforcing lessons of courtesy, responsibility and character in children in area schools since 1991. Adult volunteers, including several police officers, also take the children on field trips, help with homework and provide cultural activities and camps throughout the year. Among the evening’s attractions will be feature performances from local rising youth artists as well as a surprise guest, organizers said. There will also be an auction, among which will be an autographed photo of former Miami Dolphin’s Dan Marino and an autographed hockey puck from the Florida Panthers. The KOP Mentoring Network will recognize a well-known police officer and community leader as its 2015 Man of the Year. A committee unanimously selected Capt. Michael Coleman, who has been on the force for 21 years, from an impressive list of nominees, officials said. “This is a small token of appreciation for the captain’s hard work in our community,” said Bobby Cannata, chairman of KOPMN’s Board of Directors. “With everything that is going on, it is just so important to recognize those officers who are doing a lot of good stuff out there on a consistent basis. It is a prestigious honor that serves to recognize the best of the best within our community.” Coleman will be honored at the organization’s annual awards dinner, March 26, 6:30 p.m. at Bogart’s of Boca Raton, 3200 Airport Road, Boca Raton. The award is awarded annually to a community servant who demonstrates exceptional leadership abilities and contributions to youth causes in the community, Cannata said. In choosing the recipient, several things were considered, including years of service, leadership, and character, he added. Coleman spent much of his career patrolling the city’s northwest and southwest neighborhoods, notorious for illegal drug activities and hideaways for many of the area’s criminals. He is respected by longtime residents, many who consider him a vital link between the city and the police department. His bosses constantly praise him for his efforts both inside the agency and in the community. “Capt. Coleman is a part of many outside organizations that do a wonderful job of enriching the lives of the citizens of Delray Beach,” then Assistant Chief Jeffrey Goldman, who is now chief, wrote in his most recent evaluation. “He understands the importance of leadership and embraces it. He also takes time to mentor the new officers and teach them the right and wrong of our profession.” He also has earned the respect of criminals in the street, many who are willing to help him rid their neighborhoods of drugs and crime. Islamic Extremists Rule “Timbuktu”

Luncheon and Fashion Show At Valencia Isles
This past Friday, my travels took me up to Valencia Isles, Country Club in Boynton Beach for a luncheon and fashion show put on by the Boynton Beach chapter of JAFCO. There were about 250 ladies in attendance and we were treated to a delicious Chinese luncheon catered by China Gardens of Delray Beach. The lunch, a
buffet consisted of egg rolls, general tso chicken, lo mein, shrimp with lobster sauce and chicken friend rice. Very delicious for sure and very different. There were many many raffle prizes awarded and then we were treated to a fashion show put on by the clothing store, Hy Ma Hy Pa of Delray Beach. All in all a very delightful afternoon.

If you are not sufficiently outraged about ISIS, “Timbuktu” is a film that can push you over the edge. “Timbuktu” is Mauritania’s official submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film. Director Abderrahmane Sissako shows us what life is like under strict Islamic Shira law. It is not a pretty picture. The story begins with a group of heavilyswathed armed men in a speeding truck flying the black ISIS flag. The men are shooting at a fleeing gazelle with automatic weapons. They use sacred West African art objects for target practice. We then see them enter the ancient city of Timbuktu, shouting commands from a bullhorn. “No Smoking!” “Music is forbidden!” “Women must wear socks and gloves!” Fun and joy is pretty much forbidden. People who suffer the most are the women. “Cover your head, you are indecent,” a pretty girl is told. We see the oppression from the point of view of a traditional nomadic family, who tend cattle out in the desert. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) the father lives with his wife Satima (Toulou Kiki), daughter Toya (Layla Walet Mohamed) and
son Issan (Mehdi Ag Mohamed) in a tent. Issan, 12, is a shepherd-in-training. While herding his cows to water, one breaks away and becomes entangled in fishing net. Zabou (Kelly Noel) the fisherman becomes enraged and throws a wooden spear at the cow, killing it. Issan is devastated by the death of his beloved favorite cow, which he named GPS. When he tells his father about the incident, Kidane becomes enraged and confronts Zabou. A fight takes a tragic turn, setting in motion a series of events that will end in a merciless Shira court. Why would people want to live such a strict, joyless life, where even playing soccer is forbidden? Well the nomads don’t. All their friends have fled, leaving Kidane’s family as the last holdouts. The recent ISIS attacks in France have raised interest and controversy over “Timbuktu.” Some fear it will enflame ISIS even further. I can’t recommend this movie as entertainment, but it is a grim education about life under intolerant, ridged religious rule. Rating:

Impossible Is Not Possible – Until You Quit How many times have you heard someone in the workplace make this declaration: “We cannot do that. It is not possible”? Sometimes this is true – a customer makes a demand that cannot possibly be satisfied within the specified time frame. Or a client asks for a service far beyond your company’s expertise. Often, however, we conclude something is not possible because it seems like too much work, we do not know whether it can be done or not, or fear putting forth the effort only to fail. My friend, Gary Highfield, has written an outstanding book called When ‘Want To’ Becomes ‘Have To!’, his story of overcoming formidable odds to become a successful business leader: He never knew his biological father and had a very unsettled childhood, even witnessing devastating family tragedy while he was a boy. Facing these hardships, along with financial adversity he encountered as a young husband and father, Gary undertook a very determined strategy for dramatically changing his circumstances. He discovered many useful life principles during this process, including this declaration: “Impossible is not possible – until you quit.” This seven-word statement seems simple, but it is profound. Time and again, people told Gary what he could not do, such as becoming a top-producing, industry-leading salesman, an entrepreneur, small business owner and commercial loan officer. Yet he succeeded in achieving each of these goals. All because he refused to believe what he wanted to do was impossible. There are many other examples of people who ignored negative voices, who recognized what people said was “impossible” in fact was possible – unless they quit trying. Michelangelo probably had his detractors when he embarked on painting the ceil-
ing of the Sistine Chapel. Thomas Edison made multiple attempts at inventing an incandescent light bulb until he succeeded. He refused to quit trying. In 1943, IBM chairman Thomas Watson stated, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” And Digital Equipment Corp. founder Ken Olson said in 1977, “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” However, through hard work, vision and innovation – understanding impossible is not possible until you quit – many men and women proved the one-time industry giants wrong. The Bible directly addresses this issue. Faith in God, it declares, can move the “impossible” into reality: We cannot do it alone. The fact is, many of our desired goals often are unattainable in our own strength. They are not impossible, but require more than the power we can muster within ourselves. We need power outside of ourselves. “I can do everything through (Christ) who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). We can – but only with God. If you have a God-sized dream or goal, accomplishing it requires willingness to turn to the One that gave you the dream. As Jesus told His followers, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). We need the right motivation. It makes sense sometimes to ask ourselves, “Why am I doing this? Why is accomplishing this so important to me?” If our inspiration is not self-gratification, but rather to please and honor God, we can rely on His divine assistance and direction. “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Palimony Q. I have been living with my boy friend
for fifteen years without marrying, his choice. We have no children, my choice. We both have jobs as professionals, he an attorney and me a stockbroker. We agreed at the beginning of our relationship that, because of my expertise, my paycheck would go into my brokerage account every month, and his check would go into a checking account at his bank, in his name. He agreed that he would pay all of our mutual daily living expenses including utilities, rent, clothing, and other essentials, provided that each of us was responsible for his or own automobile purchases. A few months ago we broke up, and I have found out that he moved in with another woman who has a child from an earlier marriage. Over the years my brokerage account went up and down a bit because of the “market”, however at present I have about two million dollars in my account. On the other hand his account was about $75,000.00. Yesterday I received a letter from a divorce lawyer he hired which asked for last month’s statement on my account, and sent me my former friend’s last statement from his checking account. His lawyer suggested that my Ex was entitled to one half of the combined accounts held between us, “as a matter of law”, and alimony because my income at that time was twice his.” I have not hired an attorney and I do not know what the lawyer was talking
about since my Ex and I were not married; am I wrong. The short answer in no, and probably yes. The “no,” is for the alimony demand. Under Florida law if there is no formal marriage. There is no common-law marriage in Florida and, thus, there is no alimony under most circumstances. Florida law does not recognize “Palimony”, that is alimony just because the two of you lived together. The limited exception mentioned above is not relevant to you and your former boyfriend. The division of your net finical difference may be a problem to you. Your initial agreement did not contain any provisions regarding what happened to each of your accounts if and when you split. However Florida appellate courts have ruled that under your circumstances it would be inequitable for you to receive a windfall by virtue of his paying all of your mutual expenses for the fifteen years, while you were able to grow your assets through the stock market and other investments. If you and your EX cannot negotiate an amount less than one half of your combined assets his lawyer will probably file a petition asking the court to construct a trust, and then subject all of your combined money to this trust, and order the division of the trust funds 50/50. I say probably because you may know of other benefits that he received from your income which might help balance the scales, lowering or diminishing his share.

4KIDS of South Florida hosted the Sweet Dreams Gala at the Boca West Country Club on Saturday, February 7, 2015. It was an elegant evening of over 350 4KIDS advocates and supporters, partnering together to foster big dreams for kids in need. Guests were welcomed into a ballroom illuminated with glimmering stars, shimmering tables, and trees draped in wisteria and stardust. 4KIDS President Doug Sauder addressed the guests, “We aren’t just breaking the cycle of abuse and abandonment, we are raising cycle-breakers, these are kids that are going to go back and get other kids out of the cycle.” Sauder said of 4KIDS graduates, Crystal and Evans, who shared their personal stories and the difference 4KIDS made in each of their lives. Sweet Dreams Gala Chair and 4KIDS advocate, Fonda Huizenga, inspired attendees to rise to the needs of the modern-day orphan. “27% of children in foster care were sent out of this county this year because there were not enough homes for them in Palm Beach County,” said Huizenga. “This is unacceptable, these are our children, this is our community, we need to change this together,” Huizenga continued. Being separated from siblings is a nightmare too many children in foster care experience, which is why 4KIDS provides a home for sibling groups to stay together. House parents Shaun and Jill were featured in the video presentation, “We realized that lots of kids get taken away from their homes, but they also get taken away from their siblings.” The evening also marked the celebration of SafePlace 4KIDS in Palm Beach County, which opened in December 2014. SafePlace is a 24/7 emergency intake center providing compassionate care for children removed from their homes. 4KIDS Director of Public Relations, Katy Mills, shared, “SafePlace is just the starting point in Palm Beach County.” Mills continued, “Children need adults to step in and say, ‘I will help you conquer this big, scary thing in your life so you can dream again.’ The way you survive a nightmare is to know you will wake up from it—that’s what these kids need—a chance to wake up and dream again.” The Sweet Dreams Gala was filled with heroes who want to help children in our community dream again. In one night, 4KIDS sparked thousands of sweet dreams for kids in crisis.

sports Boca Raton’s Bid for State Berth Comes Up Short 14th minute when Mark Faeth scored on a pass from Nick Marzolini. Playing into a strong wind in the second half, the Bobcats didn’t generate as many chances, but still had enough of them that they should have capitalized, Castillo said. “Not to disrespect the other team. They executed when they had to, but we controlled the game and had more opportunities,” Castillo said. “It’s a bad way for my seniors to go out with this sour taste in their mouths because they were so close. “We had a good season. We overachieved this year in a sense, and we could have kept going.” Boca Raton, a two-time state champion and two-time runner-up, finished the regular season with a .500 record. It appeared their strong postseason run would continue until Gian-Carlo’s goal. Foody made an impressive stop in stoppage time of the second overtime, and made a superb kick save in penalty kicks. But three of Boca Raton’s four shooters came up empty.
Boca Raton’s boys soccer team won’t make its fourth consecutive appearance in the state semifinals after a 2-1 loss in penalty kicks to Haines City in the Class 5A regional finals Friday night in Boca Raton. Haines City’s goalkeeper blocked two of the four shots he faced in penalty kicks and another Boca Raton shot went off the goalpost. Haines City converted three of four kicks against Boca goalkeeper Collin Foody. “I’ve been around this game since I was 4 years old — it’s cruel sometimes and sometimes it’s absolutely beautiful,” Boca coach Marcelo Castillo said. “It’s like life. If you don’t take advantage of the opportunities you create, it has a way of coming back and teaching you a lesson. Today, it taught us a lesson.” Boca Raton appeared headed to its 11th regional championship and sixth state semifinals appearance in the past seven years, but Haines City (22-5-1) got the equalizer on Medina Gian-Carlo’s goal in the 59th minute. The Bobcats (13-9-3) took the lead in the
Paul Goydos Wins Champions Tour’s Allianz Championship Paul Goydos closed with a birdie for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke victory over Gene Sauers on Sunday in the Champions Tour’s Allianz Championship. Goydos chipped to a foot from behind the par-5 18th green and tapped in for his second victory in 12 career starts of the 50-and-over tour. He won twice in 507 starts on the PGA Tour. “Statistics are a wonderful predictor of the past,” Goydos said. “Part of it is experience and maturity. If I played like I did today 10 years ago, I don’t think there’s any way I would have won this tournament. I didn’t have my best game, but I got it around.” On a wild day at Broken Sound where nine players had a share of the lead at some
point, Goydos finished at 12-under 204 to claim the $255,000 first prize. He chipped in for an unlikely birdie at the difficult ninth and stayed atop the leaderboard the rest of the day. “It was a shootout without great scores,” Goydos said. “The course played tough today.” Sauers birdied his final two holes for a 67. It was his fourth runner-up finish on the Champions Tour, including a playoff loss to Colin Montgomerie last year in the U.S Senior Open. “I’ve lost the last five playoffs I’ve played in. I was hoping to break that streak,” Sauers said. “But I’m ecstatic with the way I played.”
Fred Funk chipped in for eagle on the final hole to tie for third at 10 under with John Huston, playing for the first time in 18 months because of a neck injury, and 2014 winner Michael Allen. Funk and Huston shot 66, and Allen had a 67. Jose Coceres, who started the day nine shots back in 45th place, played his first 16 holes in 10 under to tie Goydos for the lead. But Coceres bogeyed his 17th hole and finished sixth after a 63. The biggest comeback in Champions Tour history was when Jay Sigel rallied from 10 back to win the 1994 GTE West Classic.
