City Hall, the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District and Florida Atlantic University are operating in silos and the three candidates seeking the vacant City Council seat in the March 10 election want to see a better working relationship. In interviews with the Boca Raton Tribune, Frank Chapman, Jeremy Rodgers and Jamie Sauer said while all three entities do a good job individually, they need to do a better job in communicating. “I think that we all need to work together,” said Sauer, 33, a third-generation Floridian who has lived in the city since she was 5.

Doggie Dine-Out & Paws Fest A Huge Success Plenty of paws-pleasing ‘fur and fun’ was unleashed Saturday at the inaugural The Great Doggie DineOut & Paws Fest. The free, open-to-the-public event was a fundraiser for Tri-County Animal Rescue’s Medical Care Funds. With more than 400 pups socializing, they and their peeps enjoyed an afternoon of pet-themed activities for pet lovers of all ages and their furry friends. The event began with opening ceremonies with a pups parade of rescue alumni and their families.

The Boca Raton Tribune is excited to announce that all the candidates for City Council Seat C have confirmed their presence at the Candidate Forum the Boca Raton Tribune is hosting on March, 4th at the Wayne Barton Study Center. The planned forum will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wayne Barton Study Center, 269

Black Lives Matter-Still By Joi Odom Grant

We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Black lives matter-still! #BlackLivesMatter is a national call to action and a response to “anti-black racism,” a new prejudicial term that seems to be gaining in popularity lately. Liberal and progressive pundits use the term with regularity when describing the remarkable frequency of officer-involved shootings of black people, or the fact that one in 13 African Americans have been stripped of their right to vote by felon disenfranchisement, a form of collateral

punishment that has always disproportionately affected black people. We take this time to remind ourselves that all lives matter, in particularly black lives, with the emphasis on our black men, the negro male, black boy, the African-American man. This type of message is sometimes overlooked because of the sensitivity of the content. It has happened all too many times - we hear on the news that a black male has been murdered, found dead, shot, stabbed, burned or just simply harassed. Yes, we can cause our own problems too, but in this case, we are looking at those who died at the hands of law enforcement. It is evident that black men were and still are contributors to this society. Visual-

View Every Challenge As a Possibility! Challenges are never to be looked at as impossibilities, nor as inconveniences designed to intimidate us. Life itself is a challenge and offers a series of manifold, additional challenges to any human, anywhere on earth! Even the hardest barriers we encounter should never be approached with fear, but with the confidence that they can be met with courage, transcending the odds, permitting us to enjoy ultimate success! Difficult as some challenges may appear, or in reality be, not all of them constitute an unsolvable dilemma. Yet, even if some might present an impossibility at first, let us never forget that not all such conflicts are of the same nature, just as their solutions often vary as well, even for the same problems, in case these should reappear. One’s personal outlook toward any challenge needs to be reasonable, even positive, if ultimate success can be anticipated. That’s why I encourage myself and my readers to view every challenge as a possibility, and not dismissively give up! You may be confronting a hard task, a

lengthy project, with unreasonable fears; you can be looking at it from an inadequate angle and, thus, perceive what is not necessarily there. As Stephen R. Covey so wisely commented, “We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. And our attitudes and behaviors grow out of those assumptions.” Being social creatures we should never refrain from seeking the opinion and the aid of others we can trust. What we may erroneously understand from one angle, others can provide the correct perspective to help us, as they observe a situation from a more accurate point of viewing. Where we may encounter the end of a road, others may call our attention and point us to a passage we had missed noticing altogether, but one that can and will lead us to where we need to go, so as to reach what we are pursuing. The greatest prize for persistence is reaching one’s goal after all hope had been prematurely abandoned!

Melissa Harris Perry’s powerful tribute to unarmed black men killed by police on MSNBC brought light to this national cause. She began her statement by naming numerous unarmed black men who were killed by police throughout the last 10 years — ending with the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. “In the past decade alone, these men and hundreds of others have lost their lives to police,” she said. “From 2006 to 2012, a white police officer killed a black person at

least twice a week in this country.” So where do we go from here because we are standing on the shoulders of so many great men? We owe it to our ancestors and we owe it to ourselves. It’s time for a conversation, a time to inform, a time to educate and then repeat the process. I do not know what it is like to be a black man. I just know I need one. I am a black woman with a black father, a black husband, a black brother, a black godson, a black nephew, a black uncle, a black brother-in-law, a black cousin and my ancestry tells me I come from a generation of strong black men - the late Rev. R.M Lee and Rev. E.D. Odom. Never, ever do I want to hear their names in a Roll Call such as this....

“Our beaches and parks are very important to Boca Raton and working together is very important as is communication - being clear on what they want and need for the city, for the district and for the university. I think the city works with all of them but I think there could be improvement.” Chapman, a retired attorney, was more pragmatic. He fears too much time is spent squabbling over issues that could be addressed through effective dialogue. “We have a lack of communication, in fact, we almost have an adversarial relationship between the Beach & Park District and the City,” said Chapman, 47, a Boca Raton native. “There are things I read in the paper where I just can’t understand how these two could be fighting about something that to us is so quite simple, whether it’s beach renourishment or the fact that you have these many organizations fighting for a limited number of fields. “I think it becomes an ego thing I don’t know if it’s any one person in particular,” said Chapman, who is a founding member and past president of the Boca Raton Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading organization. “I don’t like it because we don’t benefit.” He also said all three entities are partners, and that the city and the university have not been effective in communicating their comprehensive plans for the future.

“I think that the biggest challenge facing the city and FAU is, ‘What is your 20-year plan?’” Chapman said. All three candidates say FAU is important to the growth of the city. Rodgers wants to see the city grow and cultivate the next pool of talents. “I really want to see FAU, Lynn, Palm Beach State thrive,” the 36-year-old FAU graduate and software engineer with IBM said. “I want them to put out the best talent that they can. And when that talent goes out I don’t want to see them leave town to find a job.” He envisions more technology business incubators in the city to compliment the area’s vibrant tourism and medical industry. The Technology Business Incubators were created in response to a growing demand for its services. They serve resources for entrepreneurs emerging from FAU – students, recent graduates and faculty – which is now home to 22 early stage technology companies. “Let’s encourage all the business start-ups to come here,” Rodgers said. “Let’s do what we did with FAU Research Park and with Tech Runway. I think the more of that that we do, the better we will be as a city.” The Research Park at Florida Atlantic University has its own business incubator called Tech Runway, which focuses on technology companies, especially those working with university researchers.

The event culminated with lots of ‘doggie dancing’, an afternoon Fur-Baby Couture Fashion Show, live entertainment and an after-dusk ‘big screen’ movie-in-the-park heartwarming feature film presentation of DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies: Hotel for Dogs. Recognized by New Times as one of the ‘Five Best Food and Drink Events This Weekend’ and as

one of the popular weekly Staff Picks by Boca Raton Magazine, there was curbside dining served up by Gourmet Truck Expo, ‘Dogs for Dogs’ hotdog bar and specialty cocktails and frozen and natural pet treats. Entries in the inaugural Great Pet Bed Design Competition presented by Sklar Furnishings were on display featuring the pet lovin’ talents of designers, artists, and art schools with opportunity for event-goers to vote for their favs. The 2015 ‘People’s Choice’ Award went to Boca Raton resident and graphic designer Roberta Stealy for her purple and gold ‘Stiletto Strut’ creation. Event co-chairs Bonnie and Jon Kaye of Kaye Communications, TCAR’s official PR and marketing firm, conceived the free community festivities and gathered a pet-passionate event committee representing a cross-section of the community to promote the features, advantages and benefits of the TCAR rescue and dog and cat adoption center. Event-goers learned more about TCAR, Boca Raton’s ‘own’ humane society that is the region’s largest 100 percent no kill nonprofit that serves as safe haven for hundreds of dogs and cats. Significant funds are spent on rehabilitating rescues saved from puppy mills and high kill shelters to successfully ready them for re-homing. Since TCAR receives no local, state or federal government funding for operations, medical treatment and housing, the monies raised will fund needed vet care, isolation monitoring, surgeries, therapy, medications and the healthy birthing of litters in addition to wellness care such as vaccinations and vitamins.

Proposal to Regulate The Use of E-Cigarettes In Boca Raton Fails

The proposal to regulate the use of ecigarettes in public places in the City of Boca Raton was dissipated Tuesday night due to the growing concern there was too little medical information about them. The City Council voted 3-2 to throw out the ordinance that would have limited e-cig use in public places, just as tobacco is pro-

hibited in certain public places. In January, Delray Beach passed an ordinance that limited e-cig use the same way that tobacco use is prohibited in public places. The same kind of city law was proposed by Boca Councilwoman Constance Scott after she experienced an unpleasant odor while near an e-cigarette user. “There’s a great deal more to know about these products,” Scott said. “But there’s a great deal to be concerned about.” But only Mayor Susan Haynie supported Scott’s effort. She said she had spoken to a restaurant owner who told her that e-cig use was disruptive in restaurants because other diners found it offensive. Boca Man Arrested After Entering Women’s Dorm at Lynn University By Danielle Armour

Students at Lynn University are reeling after an intruder snuck into a secure freshman dorm and terrorized several students recently. Joseph Rutkowski, 21, slipped pass campus security and followed three students into the dorm around 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 12, according to an arrest report. He followed them to their room, but was greeted with a door slammed in his face. He then went to another room, police said. The woman in the next room thought Rutkowski was her roommate’s friend until he grabbed her by the shoulders, turned her around and tried to kiss her, police said. She screamed and ran. Rutkowski then forced himself into another dorm room, grabbed a student, threw her onto the bed and tried to get on top of her, investigators said. She, however, was able to get away. His spree of harassment continued in a restroom where he took off his shoes and “nudged a shower curtain,” while the woman was showering, according to the report. The woman screamed at him to leave. Campus security was called to the second floor, but Rutkowski, who lives a few blocks away, rode away on his bike before they arrived. Police arrested him the next day

at his home. He is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail, without bail, on charges of burglary with assault and battery. “I feel super grossed out, but I’m glad they’ve done something about it,” student Rachel Marcos said. Another student, Nicolette Speciale, said the spree caught her off guard but she feels safe. “They’re always monitoring the buildings, there’s video cameras all the time,” Speciale said. Everything’s usually monitored. So hearing that was a surprise, actually.” Jacqueline Guerrero, a student in the same dorm, agrees. “I just always thought Boca was a safe neighborhood so I never thought in a million years that could happen,” Guerrero said. Collegefactual.com, a website that ranks college safety, reports Lynn University has an overall F+ safety rating. The report states, “On campus crime statistics reported by Lynn University carry the most importance in our overall estimation of campus crime,” according to the report. “When all violations are totaled and weighed by both severity and the number of students at the school, Lynn University has far more than average reported crime.”

Art, Antiques and Jewelry Show I attended the Art, Antiques and Jewelry Show at the Palm Beach Convention Center last week witth my friend, Marilyn Gardner. It was an awesome display of some of the finest jewelry, art and antiques seen anywhere. We met many of the vendors and were told some awesome stories about many interesting objects. Here are some of the most interesting pieces that I saw.

Doggie Bed Contest At Sklar’s Furnishings This week I attended the doggie bed contest for tri-county humane society hosted by Keith and Pat Howard of Sklar’s Furnishing’s on Federal Hwy. There were several great doggie beds entered in this contest and the first place winner was a loubpawtin shoe done by Courtney Thomas and Olivia Masshaler. Second place winner was Roberta Stealy with her Stiletto Stroll doggie bed. There was really some great competition in this fun contest.

America loves underdogs. America loves sports. America loves Kevin Costner, who hasn’t had a good film role in many moons. These are three things “McFarland USA” has going for it. Oh, and it is a true story based on real-life people who accomplish amazing feats. Kevin Costner is Jim White, a bad-tempered high school football coach. In the first scene we see him get fired from his latest job for yelling at a boy and throwing something at him, drawing blood. It is August, 1987, and White is just about out of job options. He packs up his longsuffering wife Cheryl (Maria Bello), his daughters Julie (Morgan Saylor) and Jamie (Elsie Fisher) and moves to the central California “Fruit and Vegetable Capital of America,” McFarland. The girls are none too thrilled about this. “Please tell me you took the wrong exit,” whines Julie. McFarland is one of the poorest towns in America. Its population is about 90 percent Mexican and most of them are “pickers” engaged in the back-breaking work of picking fruits and vegetables by hand, sorting and packing them. White, whose last name is particularly ironic, bombs out right away as football coach. Rather than firing him or having him quit, the Principal (Valente Rodriguez) suggests he try to organize a cross-country track team. White had absolutely zero

experience with track, but he noticed the Mexican boys, who ran to school after picking early in the morning, run fast and have stamina. So begins McFarland High School’s rag-tag seven-man cross country team, captained by the fastest, Thomas Valles (Carlos Pratts), and anchored by chubby Danny Diaz (Ramiro Rodriguez). Three of the boys are from the same Diaz family: David (Rafael Martinez), Damacio (Michael Aguero) and Danny, and they get flak from their father (Omar Leyva), who thinks the picking should come first. “McFarland” is both about the building of a miracle team and the assimilation of an Anglo family into a Chicano culture. A breakthrough comes when Julie turns 15, and the townspeople throw her “Quinceanera” coming-of-age party. Kevin Costner comes from a hardscrabble, blue-collar family, and he is ideally-suited to play the struggling, temperamental coach who ultimately wins the respect of his team and school officials. Stay to the very end of the film and you will see the satitisfying happy endings of everyone involved. Rating: 

Rooted Together For Strength I have never seen firsthand the huge sequoia trees, also known as California redwoods, which grow in the western United States. However, I recently learned about a characteristic of these trees that contributes not only to their incredible height but also to their extraordinary longevity. These trees have been known to grow well over 300 feet tall (not including their root system), up to 26 feet in diameter, and many have lived well beyond 1,000 years. To what do scientists attribute their amazing size, durability and lifespan? One of the most important factors, I discovered, is their root system. Sequoia trees intertwine their roots with other sequoias, enabling them to share strength and resources necessary for their growth and health. They are better equipped for enduring adversity as well. What if we were to function more like sequoias in the business and professional world? There is a tendency to emphasize independence and individual achievement. We hear about the “rising star” in the office or company, the person that stands out for exceptional performance. There is nothing wrong with recognizing those that stand out, but a reality in nature and everyday life is in virtually every instance, we can accomplish more together than we can in operating by ourselves. Despite mantras such as “it is all about me” and “I did it my way,” there is something very gratifying and rewarding about working together as a team, complementing one another with our respective strengths and abilities, and offsetting our weaknesses. Every visionary leader needs good administrative and clerical people to accomplish their objectives. Idea people need skilled communicators to convey their ideas effectively. Accomplished sales people would be of no

Teaming up to achieve greater results. There is much to be said about the synergy of people working in concert, united around a common sense of mission, vision and values. They can accomplish great things together that they could only dream about independently.”Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up?... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).

Marcelo Castillo Named Boca Raton FC’s First Head Coach & General Manager

Boca Raton Football Club proudly announces today the appointment of Marcelo Castillo as the club’s first-ever Head Coach and General Manager. Castillo joins Boca Raton FC with a very impressive playing and coaching resume. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who has represented Canada on numerous occasions as a youth including the 1987 Peace Games, Castillo attended Coastal Carolina University, where in 1992 he was a freshman starter on their first ever NCAA D1 Tournament team. Castillo moved on to Francis Marion University, where he earned his BBA In Marketing (’99). Castillo played with the North York Rockets and professionally with the Toronto Supra of the CNSL. The appointment of Castillo as head coach and general manager reinforces Boca Raton FC’s commitment to building a team with strong ties to the community. Upon moving to Boca Raton in 2001, the coach joined local youth club Boca United FC and earned many firsts for the club, including their first ever FYSA State Cup Championship in 2004 and a GotMilk National Championship. Castillo has also

coached with Team Boca and the Coral Springs Storm, which as head coach in 2009, he led to the under-19 FYSA State Cup Championship. At the High School level, the two-time Florida High School Coach-of-the-Year has seen much success in Boca Raton as well, earning his first Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Championship as an assistant in 2002 at Olympic Heights and then in 2010 as the head coach of Boca Raton High School. In his 11 years at Boca Raton High School, the nine-time Palm Beach Coach-of-theYear, and his teams have amassed 10 Conference, 11 District, and 6 Regional Championships. “Here in Boca Raton have so many great players that don’t do much during the summer, which places them at a disadvantage in the national eyes,” says Castillo. “The Boca Raton FC project of getting together good players of a high level, three times a week training, 18 games during the summer break, will benefit all of the players in our local soccer community.” “Boca Raton FC will be a team of local flavor that will represent us in a professional

manner through football,” added Castillo. Castillo has a proven track record of developing players. During his tenure as head coach at Boca Raton High School, Castillo has coached many college, professional and National team players. Having worked closely with Boca Raton native and United States Men’s National Team forward Jozy Altidore and his Foundation where he is currently the soccer director, Castillo, who holds a National Federation of State High School Association U.S. National Soccer Coaching Degree, United States Soccer Federation National Coaching License, and a BFUT Level 2 Brazilian Coaching Certificate, has also been involved with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in both coaching and scouting capacities over the past five years. Lynn Softball Gets Its Fifth-Straight Victory

Lynn University’s softball team concluded play at the Saint Leo Tournament on

Sunday morning, defeating Stillman 7-2 for its fifth-straight victory. With the win Lynn improves to 7-4 overall. Cherise McEnery and Amanda Casillas paced the attack with two hits apiece. Leanne Wright and Taylor Steczo muscled two run home runs while Christina Carvatta and McEnery also logged a RBI each. Missy Montgomery started the contest and earned her second win of the weekend. Over five innings, Montgomery plagued the opposing team with six strikeouts while only surrendering one run off three hits. Francais Olexa pitched two innings of relief, allowing one earned run off two hits

with two strikeouts. Wright started the offense with her blast to center field to score her and Manya Lopez, who got on base with a walk. Stillman (5-8) responded with a solo home run of its own to cut the deficit in half. After a scoreless second, Lynn racked up four more runs in the third frame. Starting with another walk from Lopez, the junior scored two batters latter off a single from McEnery. Wright rounded the bases for the second time the following batter with assistance from a fielding error by the shortstop. Taylor Steczo blasted her first career home run, bringing home her and Jasmine

Campos, to extend the lead to 6-1. Campos scored the final Fighting Knights run in the fifth inning off a single from Carvatta. Through the four games at the Saint Leo Tournament, Carvatta led all Knights with six hits and a .545 batting average. Wright, Lopez, Casillas and Sara Vazquez all chipped in five hits with Wright and Lopez also having four RBI. The Fighting Knights stole 10 bases over the weekend, led by Kaci Vassallo who went a perfect 4-4. In the circle, Lynn’s rotation had a 1.50 earned run average, highlighted by Katelyn Key’s one hitter. Montgomery posted two wins a save while Olexa also earned a win.

By Frank Chapman Do you remember when you wanted to make Boca Raton your home? Some of us grew up here and never wanted to leave. Some visited, and never wanted to go home. Boca Raton is a very special place, a community where thousands of people from all over the world chose to forge lifelong friendships with this community and brought with them a new spirit and energy that helped bring businesses to our community, where they continue to thrive to this day. When I was the senior class president at Boca High in 1986, I thought I understood what it meant to live in such an inordinately special place. Flash forward almost 30 years later, and now I drop off my oldest son Jack at Boca High every day. When we think about the factors that shape us into who we are as people, the necessity of a cohesive and strong community cannot be overlooked. Boca Raton is a true community of people, a place where folks look out for each other, whether neighbors or strangers. Yet, we owe it to ourselves to do better. We not only deserve better from our elected officials, but we also must expect better from each other. Cultural changes like this start and end with people like me and you. We really can do better, our families and children deserve every opportunity possible. Whether access to world class educational and art programs or the opportunity to regularly participate and engage with community leaders, we must do a better job communicating and listening to one another. By engaging with all of our residents, and informing them about potential solutions to issues, we can work together to make the tough choices that will advance our community forward as we address serious threats of high-rise development and traffic congestion. For the short term, we need to address these interconnecting issues responsibly while we have a serious community discussion about putting together a 20year plan for Boca: A plan laying out where our city will be, how we will

maintain or improve on delivery of city services as we grow, and create the roadmap to guarantee we maintain proper staffing levels, ensure we have the tools and assets necessary to ensure the best possible services, and ensure proper compensation to our hard working staff. Part of the answer is to have a moratorium on apartments downtown and promote home ownership. Healthy owneroccupied communities are more likely to join civic organizations, plant roots, grow families and develop the community in the manner we are all accustomed. Ownership creates responsible members of the community that quite literally “buy into” Boca Raton. But most importantly, we need somebody on the city council who will promote open government and community involvement. I believe those are our best defenses against the “Browardization” of our community, and the best way to ensure there are not any special “back room deals” for big ticket high rise developers. We cannot afford to continue to learn about a new project when the deals have already been made and it is too late to stop. I got into this race because of and for the same reasons I ran for class president at Boca High once many years ago: there is something special about this place, and I want to do anything I can to help preserve and strengthen this community. I am not like the other candidates in this election. I have a unique background, a combination of years of practical experience growing small businesses, an education in taxation and the law, combined with a hard working persistence needed to get things done. I will use my experience to stand up for our rights and ensure that every one of us, the residents of Boca Raton, has a say in the future of our great city. I do NOT want to simply remember Boca, I want us to “Take Boca Back” so that it remains the proud city we all remember when decided to make Boca Raton our home.
