• Palm Beach County will be repaving Glades Road from Ponderosa Drive to State Road 7 and Can Boulevard between Glades and Yamato Roads. • A portion of Boca Raton’s popular El Rio Trail will be closed for four months as a massive new Interstate 95 interchange is being built. The bicycle and pedestrian trail will close starting March 30 from just south of Yamato Road to Spanish River Boulevard. The trail travels through the middle of a construction project to build a new interchange at Spanish River that will take I-95 traffic directly to Florida Atlantic University. The trail has to be closed to allow contractors to build three new bridges, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. Cyclists and pedestrians can take the T-Rex Trail to travel between Yamato and Spanish River. The extensive $67.7 million project includes 13 new and refurbished bridges and additional lanes on I-95 between Glades and the Spanish River interchange as well as between Yamato and Congress Avenue. There will also be a widened Spanish River west of Florida Atlantic Boulevard and an elaborate ramp network connecting I-95, Spanish River and Yamato Road. In addition to the trail closing, the southbound I-95 entrance ramp from eastbound Yamato will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. And through the month of April, lanes will be closed on I-95 at night between Glades Road and Congress Avenue. One to two lanes may be closed in each direction. • It’s officially a go, as a U.S. customs facility at the Boca Raton Airport moved forward after a joint agreement was approved, an expected first state grant came through and the federal agency appointed a project manager.

• Five top Office Depot executives will receive $85 million in golden parachute payments if the merger with Staples goes through, with Chairman and CEO Roland Smith collecting $46.8 million, including vesting of shares and cashing in options worth $39.3 million, plus a cash severance of $7.5 million.

On the flip side, Office Depot revealed last year’s red ink was a brutal $354 million. Both retailers plan to close about 400 stores this year. The proposed merger still needs a green light from the Federal Trade Commission. • City National Bank Plaza, on the southwest corner of Palmetto and Powerline Roads, is facing a $22.9 million foreclosure lawsuit. • A six-bedroom home in Long Lake Estates on Clint Moore Road in west Boca, sold for $3.8 million or $518 a square foot, the highest in the community since 2007. The total price of $4.1 million included the furnishings. Buyer on the home was Chris Ferguson, owner of TLF Apparel in Boca Raton. • Looking for a unique way to say who you are, what you do and how people can get in touch with you? How about a

Continue from page 1 Yacinthe serves as the Systems Engineering Lead for the Ohio State EcoCAR 3 team. In his role, he is responsible for design, control, and integration of vehicle systems.

He had a large impact on the vehicle architecture selection process, since he helped develop models of the entire system, so the team could predict the behavior of thesystem for different design inputs.

“My position on the Ohio State EcoCAR 3 team during year one is extremely important,” Yacinthe said. “Since we currently don’t have a physical vehicle, we need to run simulations on computers to test our

ideas for achieving design goals.” So, what really sparked Yacinthe’s interest in automotive engineering? He instantly thought back to his first Lego set and how he enjoyed finding solutions to complex problems. But, in high school Yacinthe had an opportunity to experience engineering and design on a whole new level. “At my school, I was on the drafting and design track,” Yacinthe said. “This meant that I took one class a year dedicated to those topics. In an early course, I was introduced to computer-aided design tools. By the end of thetrack, I was able to draft an entire house.” Yacinthe is still considering where he hopes to be in the next few years. This summer he will be interning with theFord Motor Company within their Research & Advanced Engineering group. “I believe that many of the opportunities I have now are a product of a great foundational education and hometown,” Yacinthe said. “Whether I go on to become a Professor in engineering or to work at an automotive company, the skills I have learned from Boca Raton will stay with me forever.”

KaBoom! A Playground is Born Just a few weekends ago, I was part of something special in Lake Worth West the construction of a KaBoom! playground in a residential neighborhood. There were more than 260 volunteers from all walks of life: male and female, young and old, black and white, some from Palm Beach County, Broward and other neighboring counties as well from other parts of the state. Some even came from out of state to help. Many business operators donated food, supplies and their time. Several individuals served on various committees. The park, at 4150 Vermont Ave., is the result of a collaboration between a few entities namely, the Palm Beach County Office of Community Revitalization and the Parks & Recreation Department, the Office Depot Foundation, KaBOOM!, Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office and Lake Worth West Residential Planning Group.

This was truly a community effort. Employees of the Sheriff ’s Office were out there getting dirty and working hard. In fact, kudos to the members of the Sheriff ’s Office grill team who ensured that the volunteers had enough hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. I learned that that park was originally planned for Boca Raton. But after “the powers that be” in the city declined the offer - as there is no such need in the city of opulence - officials with the county seized the opportunity. The idea for the Lake Worth West Park began at a seminar at Office Depot last year when I introduced Houston Tate, manager of the Palm Beach County’s Office of Community Revitalization, to Mary Wong, Office Depot’s Foundation’s president. Ms. Wong shared her story of trying to find a deserving community for the park and Mr. Tate quickly said he had the perfect community where it would be

a welcome addition. That meeting kicked off a yearlong relationship, which included the red tape until Jan. 24 when the ribbon was cut. I learned how this neighborhood was once ravaged with crime and drugs until residents said, ‘No more’ and took back their community. A lot of innocent blood was shed on the land where the park now sits, residents and law enforcement officials told me. Several deputies recall how they were frequently called to the neighborhood in the 1990s for crime and other illicit activities. No more. With the help of county officials, the residents converted a house next door to the park into a community center. Then the community began to change – for the betterment of all. The park, just east of Military Trail between Melaleuca Lane and Lake Worth Road, serves multiple purposes. Perhaps one of the most important roles is that

it is providing a much-needed opportunity for kids to have fun and exert excess energy in a safe environment. The American Academy of Pediatrics says play is critical to healthy brain development. It allows children to use their creativity while at the same time developing imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Still, today’s children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only one in five live within walking distance of a park or playground. The resulting play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and academically, according to the Academy of Pediatrics. I feel privileged to have been a part of what happened that Saturday. It was a good day.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

The Illusions of Success! Many years ago I read a book with a unique title: “Success is a Moving Target,” and since then I’ve come to verify the accuracy of that statement in countless occasions. It’s very easy for some people to think that because success occurred once, it will automatically happen in perpetuity. Yet, factors that produced success at one time may not be what is required in other occasions and circumstances, to bring similar results. Furthermore, some types of success are to meet unique needs at a given moment, offering no guarantee of

its repetition in other situations, times, and places. “The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow,” wrote C. William Pollard, Chairman of The Service Master Company. Success achieved requires maintenance and further expansion if it is to remain viable, and worthy of the label of success! Besides, each task often calls for its peculiar type of success. Several individuals today, choose to hide behind the experience of a previous, momentary success which, sadly, did not

continue nor did it expand. A legitimate image of great achievement was created at first, but soon thereafter left with no legs to stand, much less to advance! True success most often stems from collaborative efforts, with a view toward positively impacting the greatest number of people through a product, an idea, or some other concrete deed planned and executed together. It inevitably occurs when unanimity is reached “in doing things right and in doing the right thing” by those aiming to succeed! There is no legitimacy in what people

designate as success, unless it’s never devoid of the elements that guarantee its permanence and consistent advancement toward additional excellence. It requires the continual supply of the indispensable ingredients that ensure its top quality and impact! Planning for success, and achieving it, is a legitimate goal for individuals, organizations, and others who can uniquely benefit others. After all, the only alternative to success is not a commendable one since no sane individual ever chooses failure as the ultimate goal in life!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Rotarians with a Heart Give Food to Local Students

By CRA News Service

Delray Beach local Rotarians are focusing on the heart, but it doesn’t have to do with your body’s ticker. Members of the Rotary Club of Delray Beach delivered several pounds of nonperishable food to Pine Grove Elementary School on Tuesday as part of the “Rotary Has Heart” campaign.

The Rotarians collected the food items for “to support our schools in this community and to make sure that the kids have what they need,” said Mikki Shidler, a visiting Rotarian from South Bend, Indiana, who worked with the Rotary Club of Delray Beach to collect and distribute the food. Former Rotary International Vice President Anne Matthews established the “Rotary Has Heart” challenge to encourage Rotarians in eight coastal states — from Delaware to Florida — as well as Washington D.C. and 24 Caribbean nations to use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to create an effective response to their local food insecurity issues. Matthews’ challenge was to Rotarians in eight coastal states — from Delaware to Florida — as well as Washington D.C. and 24 Caribbean nations. With 98 percent of the students being on the free or reduced lunch program, school officials said they are grateful for the food donation. “When our school is closed, I worry that my children are not eating [a balanced meal],” said Sheila Bethel, the school’s Community Resource representative. All of the donated food will be given to the students and their families, she added.

Students race to fill the bucket with water in one of the competitive events at Village Academy’s Annual Field Day on Friday. The outdoor activities, for students in pre k to fifth grade, followed the Florida Standards Assessments test and ushered in Spring Break.

3rd Annual “Gas Buy Down” After a tremendous response to their “Gas Buy Down” in 2014, The Journey Church of Boca Raton is again offering the community $0.50 off per gallon on gasoline on Saturday, March 28. The Journey’s “Gas Buy Down” will take place Saturday, March 28, 10:00am 1:00pm, at the Valero Gas Station located at 1380 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton (just north of Glades Road). The church will buy down the price of gas by $0.50/gallon for as many people as possible during the three-hour time frame between 10:00am and 1:00pm, giving drivers the opportunity to take advantage of the lowest gasoline prices in the region. “After the opportunity to share God’s love in such a practical way last year, we decided to offer another Gas Buy Down this year,” said Jason Hatley, Lead Pastor of The Journey Church. “With gas prices back on the rise, this remains a consistent source of financial strain, so the Gas Buy Down project has been a great way to be a blessing to the people of our community.” Volunteers from the four-year-old church

will be on hand to pump gas and give a break to the wallets of members of the community. The Journey is a new church in Boca Raton, featuring services each Sunday with casual dress, rockin’ music and practical teaching. This community outreach opportunity connects nicely with the Easter season. The Gas Buy Down is far from the first time The Journey will be serving the community. In its first four years, The Journey has successfully partnered with Boca Helping Hands, 4KIDS of South Florida, and C.R.O.S. Ministry’s Gleaning Mission on outreach projects. Hatley says the church is “always on the lookout for creative ways to make a difference in people’s lives.” The Journey Church is a casual, contemporary, Christian church that meets each Sunday at 9:30am or11:00am, at Boca Raton Community High School (just off Glades Road at I-95, exit 45). Since its beginning in February 2011, The Journey has grown to a congregation of several hundred that meet each week.

Village Academy Holds Field Day Event

Colleagues of Elourdes Ostagne, the woman who was killed in a two car crash while walking home recently, say she was a loving, caring and hardworking woman. “Everybody absolutely adored her,” said Ashley Gombs, who worked with the 65-year-old mother of 10 at a local fast food restaurant. “She would come in and she’d say ‘Hi boss,’ and ‘Hi to everybody.’” Ostagne became a widow a month ago after losing her husband to cancer. She was a great provider, family members said. Gombs said Ostagne’s coworkers affectionately call her “mom” because of her caring nature. Police said a Ford F-150, driven by Bryce Samartin, slammed into the back of a 2012 Nissan Altima in the 600 block of S. Fed-

eral Highway at about 10 p.m. Sunday. The pickup truck was attempting to pass the Altima while approaching the intersection of East Camino Real, police said. The Ford careened out of control and hit Ostagne, 65, who was walking on the sidewalk, police said. The pickup truck then smashed into a light pole and tree then came to final rest against the north wall of a local bank. Samartino, 22, and his passenger, John Schafer, 23, both of Boca Raton received minor injuries. They were treated at the scene. The driver of the Nissan, Lorena Hilel, 25, of Pompano Beach, was not injured. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Brian Pare 561-620-6168.

A hot pastrami on rye please. Like traditional Jewish delis? You’ll learn everything you need to know from “Deli Man.” This is both a documentary history and a loving tribute to a dying institution, by writer-director Erik Anjou. The movie begins in present-day New York City in the pre-dawn hours. Men are ordering and unloading deli supplies. We are told that in 1931, there were thousands of Jewish delis in all five New York Boroughs. Now there are only 150 in all of the USA. There are numerous tributes to the joys, sounds and smells of the Jewish deli. The main focus is on a third-generation Jewish deli man named Ziggy Gruber. Ziggy’s father and grandfather before him ran Jewish delis in New York City. Ziggy, who began

working at age 8, learned there is a long Jewish history in Houston, Texas, but no authentic Jewish deli. So he founded Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen, and it was an immediate and smash success. Running any kind of restaurant is difficult. Jewish delis are more so because the clientele is so picky and demanding. In the course of the film high-profile deli lovers are quoted. Comedian Jerry Stiller is a lifelong devotee. Larry King considers himself a connoisseur. Zero Mostel and Henny Youngman ate practically all their meals in Jewish delis. Several names that have appeared in Florida are citied; Wolfies in particular, which had several Florida locations. Even Boca Raton is mentioned because of Ben’s Kosher Deli. Not all delis are Kosher, and not all are even Jewish. We meet a couple of guys in San Francisco who are experimenting with all kinds of crazy experimental things. But the heart of “Deli Man” is old-fashioned Jewish cuisine. It’s simple and fatty and not conducive to a balanced diet, but it sure is tasty. Rating: 

Quality Requires Attention to Detail Over the years, among my most enjoyable experiences have been visits to the famed Walt Disney World entertainment complex in Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. I have gone there on several occasions and each time has been a treat for all of my senses. During my most recent trip I was impressed by one particular trait the legendary founder, Walt Disney, always emphasized – attention to detail. Mr. Disney was meticulous, painstakingly working to ensure the quality of each of his productions, whether an animated film, a movie with real actors, or later – his Disneyland and Disney World theme parks. A friend of mine, Bob Foster, owned a guest ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado, U.S.A. that once had Walt Disney as a guest. Admiring the natural beauty of God’s creation at Lost Valley Ranch, Mr. Disney told my friend Bob, “I am engaged in the work of re-creation.” And Walt Disney took this work seriously, as is still the case in his parks today. Everywhere you look in these centers there is a visual surprise. Happy, uplifting music follows visitors throughout the parks. An abundance of restaurants appeal to every palate; there are attractions that welcome a curious touch, and delightful smells fill the air. Even while waiting in line to board one of the thrilling rides, there are sights and sounds to hold one’s attention. As business and professional people, we should have a similar commitment to detail, whether it means ensuring the quality of products or services we provide; being diligent to attend to the needs of customers and clients; honoring commitments we make, or meeting financial obligations – including paying both employees and suppliers promptly. It makes excellent business sense, and in doing so, we replicate a trait

of God, whom the Bible reveals has great concern for detail. Here are some examples: Providing for needs. To ensure quality in business, we need to provide the tools and resources our staff need to perform their jobs. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it’…. God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food’ ” (Genesis 1:27-29). Alleviating worries. Workers cannot carry out their responsibilities as well when burdened with anxiety and worries. One important detail for a successful organization is ensuring employees feel confident about what they do, why they are doing it, and how they are to do it. “Look at the of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?… See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed as one of these” (Matthew 6:26-29). Excelling in even the smallest details. One of the best ways of determining whether someone is capable of handling great responsibility is how well they handle small responsibilities, in terms of both quality and approach. If they address minor matters improperly, why should they be entrusted with greater tasks to perform? “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much”(Luke 16:10). Until next week!

To Sue or Not to Sue Q: Ten years ago I divorced my husband. At the time I was earning good money at a job that I loved, with a great company. His earnings were only about ten percent more than mine, and we had only been married for five years, so we waived all alimony rights. I have been getting a relatively little child support because of our nearly equal earnings at the time of the divorce. Over the last five years my income has fallen about 50% due to the market conditions in my industry. At first I voluntarily changed jobs for a comparative salary. Within a few months I was fired from y new job because of lack of production in a commission job, as the times grew worse. I have landed a new commission job at about half of my old salary. I tried to negotiate an increase with my “Ex” with no success. I have a little money left and will use it if necessary to try to get a modification of my child support. The children are now 16 and 13 years old. My former husband still works for the same well known successful company that he did when we divorced, but I do not know how much money he is making now. How much will it cost to get the modification? Am I likely to win? Will winning be worth it for me?

A: Winning a modification case for more

child support will depend on you being able to prove that your lost wages was a material, involuntary loss. Your original job change was voluntary, but not at less money. You were terminated from your second involuntarily. Your current wages are half of what they were at the time of your divorce. It appears as if you have an excellent case for a modification, unless your former husband has suffered a depressed income equal to yours. You will be able to determine that soon after a case is filed. Your costs will be limited, compare to your original divorce case as the issues are far more limited than in the original divorce case. The big question is whether or not the increase you are likely to win will justify the expense you will pay. Your oldest has two or three years more child support, and your younger five or six. I suggest that you pay an attorney a small amount to have him calculate the amount of increase you would win if successful, using your former husband’s old wage rate for starters. There is a risk he is making less, but continuous employment with this old company, a well known successful company leads belief that he still makes at least what he was before. For an hour’s worth of legal costs you can find out what your new child support might be, and you can determine whether or not the proposed litigation is worthwhile.

Teen Charged in Multiple Robberies Publix Employee Robbed at Gunpoint On Tuesday, February 24, at shortly after 3:00 a.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a robbery that happened at TD Bank, 2301 North Federal Highway. The victim originally went to Delray Beach to get money from a TD Bank ATM. After getting the money, he got into his car, but before he could close and lock the door, he was approached by two armed suspects. The suspects demanded his cash and wallet, struck him in the face with the gun, got into the car with him. The suspects then had him drive to a second TD Bank in Boca Raton where he was forced to withdraw $300. The victim then took the suspects to his business at 7600 North Federal Highway, but when he entered the business, he was unable to deactivate the alarm before it sounded, which scared the suspects and they ran off. Officers located Marquis Pierre-Louis floating on a pool raft in the Intracoastal Waterway several hours later. The victim identified Pierre-Louis as one of the suspects who kidnapped and robbed him. Officers arrested Pierre-Louis, who later admitted to participating in the robbery. During the arrest process, officers finger-

printed Pierre-Louis. These prints were analyzed and compared to fingerprints recovered from the hood of a truck belonging to the victim of the February 11th Boca Raton Post Office robbery. The prints were determined to be a match. Based on this information, Boca Raton detectives again spoke with Pierre-Louis. Pierre-Louis admitted to participating in the Post Office robbery and named Kenneth Belvin as the second suspect. He also admitted to participating in several other robberies that were committed in the last few months, including one on January 11 in the 8300 block of NW 7th Court, Boca Raton, one at the Palm Tran Bus Station in Delray Beach (that happened an hour after the Post Office robbery), and one in Ocean Ridge on February 19th. Detectives are investigating to see whether Pierre-Louis is linked to any other crimes in the surrounding area. Detectives charged Pierre-Louis with armed robbery and kidnapping for the TD Bank ATM crime and one count of robbery for the Post Office crime. Charges for the other crimes are pending further investigation.

On Thursday, March 15 at about 8:20 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to an armed robbery that occurred at the Publix Liquor Store, 4135 North Federal Highway. Arriving officers met with the victim/ employee who said she was outside having a cigarette when a customer entered the business. As she was about to follow the customer inside, a male approached her, pointed a handgun against her chest and demanded she, “Go back inside and get me all your money.” The suspect shoved the victim through the door and yelled at the other customer to get on the ground. The victim/employee gave the suspect the cash from the registers, which he placed in a bag. The suspect ordered the victim/employee to the ground and fled out the front door.

A witness in the parking lot saw the suspect exit the store and saw him drop something on the ground. As the suspect bent to retrieve the object his hood and mask came off. The witness described the suspect as a white male with a bald head. The suspect then got into a dark colored, older model Nissan Maxima and left east through the parking lot. The victims described the suspect as about 5’10” tall, medium build, 30 to 40 years old, wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt, blue jeans and a mask. Neither victim was injured. If you have information about this crime, please call Detective Michelle Macy at (561) 620-6222 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

GRECO, Entered into eternal rest on February 28, 2015 with her beloved husband and family by her side. Born in Melrose, Massachusetts on August 16, 1923, Helen was the daughter of William A. Green and Elizabeth J. Doherty Green. She was a career gal and shortly after graduating from Stoneham High School in 1941, she headed straight for New York. There she started her career with The Radice Construction Company where she served as Assistant Controller. Overseeing building costs on major projects such as the Edgewater Arms at Fort Lauderdale at a time when Florida was beginning it’s boom. Helen had a great business mind and later worked for Ronald Kelly of the Ford Motor Company in Stamford, Ct., as General Manager of Auto Lease of America, Inc. A role reserved for men only, Helen was a pioneer in the industry as one of the first women to hold such a position. By far, Helen’s greatest accomplishment was the love of her life, her husband of 56 years, Bill Greco. Bill worked for the Riverside Post Office for many years and is a well known entertainer in the area as well as Boca Raton. They were blessed with an unfailing devotion to one another that was truly amazing and admirable. They adored each other and the longevity of their marriage speaks for itself. Helen and Bill retired to Boca Raton, Florida in the early 1980’s and continued to share a wonderful life together. Theirs was a great love affair and Helen along with Bill loved entertaining friends and family. She was blessed with many life long friends and often regaled us with stories and her infectious laughter. She will be greatly missed. Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Rita E. Burns and Betty Muse. She leaves behind her husband William J. Greco (BILL), Nephew, Joseph P. Greco III and wife Cheryl of Pompano Beach, FL. Fort Lauderdale Strikers Defeat Jacksonville Armanda FC 5-0 in Preseason

In the first preseason test for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in front of their home crowd, the red and gold didn’t waste time in showing the fans just the amount of firepower the team will have this upcoming NASL season. The Strikers defeated expansion-side Jacksonville Armada FC 5-0 at Lockhart Stadium in front of their season ticket holders on Saturday night. The Brazilian firepower of Victor “PC” Giro and Stefano Pinho, whom are on loan with the Strikers from Brazilian-sides Corinthians, and Fluminense respectively, teased the crowd of just how special the duo will be this upcoming season. PC dazzled with his speed as the Armada backline has no answer for the Brazilian speedster as he crossed the ball to Pinho who scored his second goal of the preseason in the 17th minute.

“My teammates are helping me adapt to the game so much,” PC. “We are putting into practice what we do all week long.” Jacksonville had by far the best chance of the night in the 32nd minute when Strikers keeper David Meves came out to the edge of the box where he missed his clearance kick and former Striker Jemal Johnson with an empty net but Johnson’s shot sailed way over the crossbar. In the 43rd, Stefano scored his second of the match as he was taken down at the edge of the box, no call was given but the goal was allowed. After a number of substitutions for the Strikers in the second half, the club remained attacking and looked to have a very deep bench as they prepare for the season opener on April 4th. Fort Lauderdale’s Evans Frimpong gave the Strikers the 3-0 15 seconds into the second

half after Jose Angulo’s perfect cross found Frimpong’s head in the box. In the 71st minute, Jacksonville’s Alhassane Keita made a costly error in the midfield which caused Walter Ramirez to pick up the ball and blast it from just outside the box to give the Strikers the 4-0 cushion. With already an assist to his name, Angulo added to the scoring in the 89th minute with a cheeky chip over Amanda keeper David Sierra to give the Strikers the 5-0 victory in front of the season ticket holders. The Strikers have played the Armada before, on February 28th and lost 1-0 after a Shawn Nicklaw goal in the 45th minute. But this time was a different story. Fort Lauderdale looked poised, agile, and gelled, unlike their first meeting. “We are still the same team,” laughed PC regarding the turnaround since their first preseason game. “The only difference is the

amount of time we’ve had to work. Last time we were together for just one week and now it’s been a month.” “We’ve been coming together as a group,” said Aly Alberto Hassan. “When we first met them we were just getting to know each other as a team, but after all the practices we have started to gel together.” Although happy with his club’s performance versus Jacksonville, Head Coach Marcelo Neveleff still sees what the club can work on, “We did some things very well tonight. Some things we need to keep working on.” Fort Lauderdale will have their final tune-up match of their 2015 preseason on March 28 against the NSU Sharks at Nova Southeastern University. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. EDT kickoff and is open to the general public.

MLB Players Alumni Association Hold Clinic For Kids

Meacham and Ex Florida Marlin pitcher Antonio Alfonseca taught basic pitching and fielding skills. Steve Whitaker, a former New York Yankees player and Chicago White Sox coach, who has been involved with baseball for over forty-five years, was present on Sunday. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with kids that have gone on to play in the big leagues,” said Whitaker. “And that’s my passion...that’s what I enjoy. All these guys, big leaguers like my self, have all got a story to tell, and we get to tell it to them (the kids), and we get to give them a few secrets of the game.” Seeing the former players having just as much fun as the children involved was a beautiful site to see. John Meany, a middle school student and baseball player himself, helps run the clinic with his father, Neil Meany, who is a Palm Beach County group director. John was able to reminisce to the years when he participated in these events. When asked what he learned as a kid, he remembered one lesson in particular. “Theres a part at the end, called the ‘life skills,’ and I learned to always have respect for my coaches. I learned that you should never disrespect your coaches, and you should always be polite while playing baseball...when you’re playing baseball, you’re not just representing your self, your representing your team, and your school as well.” Very wise words from such a young man. Baseball is not just a fun and competitive sport to play. Baseball is an art. It has a culture to it that only those who play can truly understand. The wide-eyed, eager to learn kids experienced an extremely rare and unique moment on Sunday, taking with them lessons and skills they will now have for a lifetime. Jorge Julio, Jim Lyttle, Brad Pennington, Wallace Johnson, Jeff Schattinger, Carlos Castillo, Andy McGaffigan, Antonio Alfonseca and Scott Winchester complete the list of the former players who participated Sunday.

By Jake Dipippo

On an absolutely beautiful spring after noon, former professional baseball players gathered at Lynn University for a great cause. It was a perfect Sunday at the ballpark, as kids of all ages participated in a wide variety of drills and games ran by the former players. Parents from surrounding counties were able to watch their children go station to station from the bleachers. From the hundreds of happy faces, to the once-in-a-lifetime lessons being taught, the positive energy in the air was so strong it could be felt. Rene Vizcarra, the director for this event and special events coordinator for the Major League Baseball Alumni Association, has been helping run these clinics for several years now. “Part of our mission statement is to keep the alumni actively involved in the communities, raise money for charities, and also promote the game of baseball,” Vizcarra said. “By putting on these free youth clinics, we feel we are achieving all three of those.” The clinic lasted two hours, and by the amount of fun the kids were having, it probably felt like two minutes to them. They were first introduced to all twelve former players. Every “coach” shared a brief statement about who they are, what teams they played for, and emphasized the overall passion and love for the game they all share. From there each alumni dispersed to their respected stations. Each drill had two former players running them. Former Texas Ranger outfielder Oddibe McDowell was at home plate teaching the basic fundamentals of laying down the perfect bunt, while former Detroit Tiger’s pitcher Rusty
