Community Over 5,000 Guests attended 7th Annual Boating & Beach Bash For People with Disabilities Continue from page 1
With boat tours, free food, live musical performances, kite flying, painting, obstacle courses, a “Kids Play Zone,” wheelchair yoga, and dance classes, wholesome family fun was delivered in abundance to all in attendance. Kicking the day off at 10 a.m., members of Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton, were joined by other boat owners from across South Florida in treating guests to 30-minute boat rides along the Intracoastal Waterway. A BBQ lunch was served to everyone providing necessary fuel for a day of fun in the sun. Amid the Bash’s many games and activities, guests were entertained by an all-day concert and separate musical performances by celebrity DJ’s Korey’s Krew and the Royal DJs, both featuring DJ’s with Cerebral Palsy. New this year was the addition of the Body, Mind and Spirit Center where participants had the opportunity to learn wheelchair yoga, laughing yoga, stretching and meditation, as a way to reduce stress and better
cope with health and wellness issues. Bash organizers even provided a Quiet Path where guests could sit in a jungle like setting to relax and appreciate the beauty of Spanish River Park. “Every year, I am taken back by the generosity of all the hardworking volunteers who make the Bash possible. They went above and beyond this year to make it our best Bash yet,” says Boating & Beach Bash Executive Director, Jay Van Vechten. “Not only did we fill all the public parking spaces in the park, at one point we counted 160 cars and vans parked on the grass, with lines of cars waiting to enter the park. It felt like the Magic Kingdom on a busy Saturday. We’ve never seen the event so well attended. None of this would have been possible without the selfless dedication of our more than 400 volunteers and many supporters.” Chris P. Bacon, the nationally recognized pig with paralysis who has wheels in lieu of hind legs was a special guest this year giving inspiration to all in attendance. More than 30 community organizations were also
on site including McDonald’s, Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital, Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, Florida Amputee Support Team, MarshMellow Dreams, Achieve Inspire Motivate, Thumbs Up, The Spanish River Paddle Company and many more. The Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities is run by the American Disabilities Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity. There are no salaries and no overhead, because everyone involved works from their home, meeting up as needed to stay organized. The Bash is made possible by private donations and support from South Florida organizations and volunteers. Boca Raton City Council Welcomes Rodgers, Name Weinroth “Deputy Mayor” After his rather surprising victory in last month’s election, Jeremy Rodgers was officially sworn in at Boca Raton City Hall on March 31st alongside Councilman Robert Weinroth, who was elected to a three-year term on the City Council unopposed. The crowd packed the Council Chambers on Tuesday to welcome newcomer Rodgers and to thank term-limited Councilwoman Constance Scott on her job well done. “When we started this, no one gave us a chance,” Rodgers said to the crowd. “We had a tough road, it’s not often you face being outspent 10 to one, go against the establishment and find yourself sitting up here.”

Congratulations, Thanks to 2015 African-American Achievers I think it is safe to say that every weekday between 6 and 10 a.m., more South Floridians tune to Hot 105.1 (WHQT- FM) than any other radio station in the market. The Arbitron ratings confirm the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show as the people’s choice. Among the personalities is Rodney Baltimore, who gives a voice to the people and organizations that serve and make a difference in our area. Rodney, one of the most trusted and recognized voices on morning radio locally, will be among four inspiring community leaders who will be honored on Wednesday, April 15, for their contributions to South Florida. They join a long list of local luminaries who have received the prestigious African-American Achievers Award, started 23 years ago by automotive legend the late Jim Moran. The free ceremony will be at 6:15 p.m. at the Broward County Convention Center. HOT 105.1 listeners know how much Rodney cares and goes above and beyond his duties of a radio announcer. It is not unusual to see him out at a community event on his day off and he volunteers as the master of ceremonies at events in the tri-county area. What many do not know, is that Rodney - a judge for several years - was nominated numerous times for the honor. He however
yielded to others he felt were more deserving. Not this year though. As he got a break from judging, an independent panel of community leaders - including former Achievers - from the tri-county area unanimously tapped him as the 2015 Community Service honoree. (For full disclosure, I was a 2006 recipient of this honor and one of this year’s judges). We reviewed more than 200 nominations from around South Florida after an extensive public outreach campaign and chose the best in each category. In the field of Arts & Culture, local Jazz legend Melton Mustafa is the winner. The internationally known trumpeter, arranger and composer has served as the director of jazz studies and an associate professor at Florida Memorial University. He teaches his students music composition and the rich history and culture of jazz as well as inspires the next generation to strive for greatness. Many have become noted musicians in their own regard. His commitment to the arts extends into the community as well. Melton works with atrisk youth in South Florida, helping ensure their access to instruments while fostering a passion for music. The Business & Entrepreneurism honoree is Lou Ella Jordan, who learned early in life
about the challenges and rewards of hard work. Born to migrant farmers, she grew up in Belle Glade and began toiling in the fields throughout elementary school as a farm laborer. She got a break in high school to work for the local grocery store. Realizing that knowledge was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, she began assuming increasing responsibility until she was in charge of inventory control and vendor relations, in addition to handling day-today operation. Lou Ella invested her spare change and bought a neighborhood grocery store. She became the first minority-owned retail concessionaire at Palm Beach International Airport in 1984. Today, she and her daughter, Tarra Pressey, (a 2007 honoree) lead Tarra Enterprises, a partner in 60 stores and restaurants at five airports. Lou Ella is also committed to the development and advancement of minority entrepreneurs. She is the vice president of Girls II Women, a nonprofit that educates, inspires and motivates underserved girls to pursue educational and professional opportunities. Capt. Barrington Irving will be honored in the category of education. A magna cum laude graduate of Florida Memorial University, Irving is a teacher and role model who shepherds the careers of so
many students. At age 23, this young man became the youngest person and only African American to fly solo around the world in a singleengine airplane in 2007. The 30,000-mile journey took him to 27 cities, 13 countries and four continents. This pioneer in education is revolutionizing online learning by piloting the world’s first Flying Classroom. He founded the dynamic educational nonprofit, Experience Aviation, and set up the Experience Aviation Learning Center that continues to offer STEM-based programs and career guidance to middle and high school students in the Miami area. More impressive, he did all this before he turned 28. Once again, JM Family and subsidiaries, Southeast Toyota and JM Lexus, will donate $10,000 in each Achiever’s name to the charity(ies) of his or her choice. To date, JM Family has donated more than $400,000 to charitable organizations in the names of its African-American Achievers. Congratulations to this year’s well-deserved unsung heroes as 2015 African-American Achievers and welcome to the fraternity! C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@delraybeachtribune.com or 561-665-0151.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Make Finishing Well Your Aim! When you come to the end of your earthly journey, what monuments shall you leave behind to impact others? How many altars shall you have erected to celebrate your own fruitfulness in your lifetime? Will you have real fruit to show or only leaves to display? These questions are raised because all human creatures are placed on earth for a variety of reasons, with each individual wired uniquely to fulfill specific purposes. To that end, three actions are expected of everyone: to make decisions, to make progress, and to make a difference. Any individual is capable of doing all three. Obviously, this is not what appears in the report card at the conclusion of a person’s
earthly pilgrimage. Many people may go through life in its entirety without being able to make any meaningful decision, and though several attempt it, some often do it wrongly. Quite a few are incapable of advancing in any direction, about anything. Moreover, making a difference is something which not many consider, and fewer yet make it real. All humans are called upon to travel the path assigned to each. But since humans are social creatures, their paths always intersect with those of others, so that experiences may be shared, examples may be emulated, and mutual encouragement exchanged. Any activity for which proper planning
occurs at every step of the way has every reason to succeed. Yet, any period of glory is not guaranteed to be maintained indefinitely; past achievements are not necessarily today’s reality, much less tomorrow’s performance. One needs to make decisive provisions for the continuing success of an enterprise, since one may be taken away from its production and command at any time. Many stop at peak performance and, then, reach a plateau from which a decline can easily emerge. In my lifetime I have repeatedly observed how many individuals quickly descended from hero to zero; they lacked staying power, many were devoid of a moral compass, with several also destitute of com-
mon sense, people skills, and the additional resources which can ensure victory at the finishing line. Throughout life, gains do not necessarily define you, just as losses should not diminish anyone. The essential factor is to know who you are, with all the assets and limitations which every individual possesses; to recognize barriers not as the end of the line, but merely as signposts to better things still ahead if you proceed amidst all challenges! Plan to finish well, for anyone can. Just follow this sound advice I once read: “Do the very best you can with what you have, where you are now!” God will do the rest and ensure triumph at last!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Take Advantage of The Saving Years
Rooted Together For Strength I have never seen firsthand the huge sequoia trees, also known as California redwoods, which grow in the western United States. However, I recently learned about a characteristic of these trees that contributes not only to their incredible height but also to their extraordinary longevity. These trees have been known to grow well over 300 feet tall (not including their root system), up to 26 feet in diameter, and many have lived well beyond 1,000 years. To what do scientists attribute their amazing size, durability and lifespan? One of the most important factors, I discovered, is their root system. Sequoia trees intertwine their roots with other sequoias, enabling them to share strength and resources necessary for their growth and health. They are better equipped for enduring adversity as well. What if we were to function more like sequoias in the business and professional world? There is a tendency to emphasize independence and individual achievement. We hear about the “rising star” in the office or company, the person that stands out for exceptional performance. There is nothing wrong with recognizing those that stand out, but a reality in nature and everyday life is in virtually every instance, we can accomplish more together than we can in operating by ourselves. Despite mantras such as “it is all about me” and “I did it my way,” there is something very gratifying and rewarding about working together as a team, complementing one another with our respective strengths and abilities, and offsetting our weaknesses. Every visionary leader needs good administrative and clerical people to accomplish their objectives. Idea people need skilled communicators to convey their ideas effectively. Accomplished sales people would be of no
value without the capable staff poised to make the products they sell. The Bible emphasizes this principle of pooling resources and mutual strength for a greater outcome. Here is a sampling of what it says about working together for the common good, much as huge sequoias merge their root systems to maximize their growth: Joining together to provide needed support. We need each other. Isolation and insistence on operating independently can ultimately lead to discouragement and lack of motivation. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Sharing resources for mutual benefit. In a competitive world we are tempted to seek our own advantage, at times at the expense of others. But short-term gains can result in long-term losses. Working together, sharing assets and strengths, can lead to substantially greater benefits for all.”And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16). Teaming up to achieve greater results. There is much to be said about the synergy of people working in concert, united around a common sense of mission, vision and values. They can accomplish great things together that they could only dream about independently.”Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up?... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
Preparing for retirement requires a plan consisting of two important phases: the saving years and the retirement years. To achieve the goal of a financially secure retirement, you will have to make wise decisions during the saving phase of your plan. If you plan to use IRAs to help you save, you should decide what type of an IRA to use. Traditional and Roth IRAs have different eligibility requirements, and each has its own advantages. Your unique financial needs will likely make one kind of IRA better-suited for you than the other, so it’s a good idea to evaluate your options. The main difference between traditional and Roth IRAs is the way their earnings are treated for tax purposes, so it’s important you understand the concepts of taxdeferred and tax advantaged accumulation. With tax deferral, you only owe taxes when you withdraw money from the account. A traditional IRA lets you make contributions and pay taxes when you take withdrawals. Withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be

subject to a 1070 IRS penalty. However, tax-free growth means you don’t have to pay federal taxes on your earnings. A Roth IRA offers the potential for tax-free growth on the after-tax dollars you invest, as long as you meet specific requirements. To avoid paying taxes on your Roth IRA earnings, you must have held the IRA for five years and you must be age 59½ or older at the time of withdrawal. Nonqualified withdrawals may be subject to income taxes and a 10% IRS penalty. Another important consideration is the tax deduction possibilities of a traditional IRA. As long as you meet certain conditions, you may be able to claim a deduction on your income taxes based on the amount of your IRA contributions.* It’s important for you to think about retirement savings well before you approach the time when you’ll actually need the funds. Take steps now to get your savings started, and make the most of the years you have to add to that savings.

Boca Raton Synagogue Wins Guinness World Record
Boca Raton Synagogue and Guinness Book of World Records recently announced that the South Florida synagogue holds the record for the world’s largest Talit, Jewish prayer shawl. The idea for a large Talit first came up in 2012. “We had an idea to create a massive Talit to be used on the holiday of Simchat Torah, when it is customary to have all of the children, under the age of Bar and Bat-Mitzvah, come under the Talit and receive a special blessing,” said Matthew Hocherman, Executive Director of BRS. “ In previous years, men would use their personal prayer shawls and hold them together to make one very large talit.” The Talit was created not only for the special prayer but also as a way for parents and
grandparents to add their children’s names to it. “The idea was to be able to have a child under the Talit, look up and see his or her name,” added Hocherman. The Synagogue enlisted the help of Tami Katz of Boca Judaica to create the 1,471.74 sq. ft. Talit that was unfurled for the first time in 2013. After its second year in use, Mr. Hocherman realized it was probably the largest of its kind and contacted Guinness World Records. On March 5, 2015, the synagogue received notification that they did in fact set a world record with their prayer shawl. “We are blessed to have close to a thousand children in this Synagogue, which necessitated a Talit of this size,” said Rabbi Efrem Goldberg. “While we are proud of the record, we hope to break it ourselves because we will need a bigger one to fit even more children.” In honor of their grandchildren, three corners of the prayer shawl have been generously sponsored by Dr. Robert & Judith Bruckstein, Dr. Merv & Elaine Jacobs and Saul & Bobbie Friedman.
Savoring the Avenue
By CRA News Service
More than 1,000 people sat down and had dinner together along Delray Beach’s At-
lantic Avenue for the 7th annual Savor The Avenue on Monday. A 1,369 foot long table, which stretched from Swinton Avenue east to Fifth Avenue (U.S. 1), was set up like an endless dinner party. Nineteen of the town’s best restaurants showcased their wares in an outdoor fourcourse dinner with wine, chatter and an opportunity to see the avenue from a perspective one never usually see while crossing the street. The event was originally set for March 26 but was rescheduled until Monday because of predicted rain.

Boca Youth Baseball Coach Arrested on Child Porn Charges By Jason Schwartz
A 41-year-old Boca Raton youth baseball coach was arrested and faces two dozen counts of child pornography charges, according to an arrest report. Broward Sheriff ’s Office detectives working with South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children arrested Daniel Scott Saull, 41, on Jan. 9 as part of a three-month investigation, deputies said. Investigators searched his Coral Springs home and found videos and pictures of mostly girls ranging in age from 1 to 12 years old engaging in sexual activity with adults and other children, according to the arrest report. Investigators also found cannabis and two glass pipes containing cannabis residue, deputies said. Saull is facing 24 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of compiling computer pornography. Deputies said he also faces charges for possession of cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia related to the marijuana found in his home.
Several electronic devises were seized from Saull’s home and will undergo forensic exams, which may result in additional charges, deputies said. Saull is the only occupant of the home at 11560 Northwest 56th Drive, Apt. 107, Coral Springs. Boca Raton Assistant City Manager Mike Woika said Saull was a volunteer coach with his son’s youth baseball team as part of the city’s youth baseball program. He was not paid and was only involved with his son’s team, which met from February to May 2014, Woika told the Sun-Sentinel. He said the city does background checks on everyone involved in its youth sports programs, and officials have no reason to think any children involved in the league were harmed. “We’re looking into it ourselves,” Woika told the newspaper. Saull’s name also allegedly came up during a Homeland Security child porn investigation in 2004, according to official documents. No additional information on that case was available, sheriff ’s officials said.

“Magic To Do” When “Pippin” Hits Broward Center Stage
They’ve got magic to do starting Tuesday, March 31 and running through April 12 when Broward Center presents the Tony Award-winning Broadway Across America production of “Pippin.” While “Pippin” is set in the ancient Roman Empire at the time of Charlemagne, its existential dilemma is very contemporary. This production of “pippin” has two name stars: theater, motion picture and television star Adrienne Barbeau plays Berthe, grandmother of the title character, who is son of Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Playing Charles, which is the alternate name of Charlemagne, is John Rubinstein. Rubinstein has quite a lengthy history with “Pippin.” He played the title role when the show opened on Broadway in 1972. It was a time when the Vietnam War was still raging, and the anti-war, anti-authority mood was still prevalent. “I was 25, playing younger,” Rubinstein revealed in a telephone interview. “I started acting professionally in 1965, so I already

had seven years’ experience. I was married and a father, so I was a grownup playing a naïve kid.” “Pippin” had a lot more satirical and philosophical content as your typical Broadway show. Despite its catchy score by Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Wicked”) “Pippin” was not a runaway hit. It did not have a conventional musical romantic plot either. Pippin, played by Kyle Dean Massey, encounters all manner of obstacles in his quest for maturity and meaning in life. “It’s a mordant satire on people who killed heathens in the name of Christianity,” Rubinstein explains. “The older version was a lot darker and more cynical. Times have changed, though many of the same problems remain. When I first did the play I realized in 40 years we will be in charge. “Pippin’ is as relevant as ever, even though there are different reactions. It still is good entertainment, with meaning.” Tickets start at $34.75. Call 800-745-3000 or go to www.browardcenter.org.

Boca High Falls to Park Vista 2-1
By Jake Di Pippo
On Saturday, March 28th the Bobcats of Boca Raton competed, very well I should say, in what was one of the biggest games in program history. The Park Vista Cobras, who as of Monday are the second best team in the entire nation according to MaxPreps.com, beat Boca High for the second time this year in nail biting fashion by a score of 2-1. The Highly anticipated matchup between two of the top three teams in Florida’s class 8A standings was originally scheduled to be played Friday night, however mother nature had other plans, as strong winds and heavy rain forced officials to reschedule the game for Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of fans, parents and scouts packed in at Boca Raton Middle School, where seating was almost impossible to find. Most fans stood the entire time, however that didn’t seem to matter as the game moved at exceptional speed. For those who love defense and great pitching, this was the perfect game for them. Austin Smith was on the mound for Park Vista. The Florida Atlantic University commit was dominant throughout. The 6’4, 215lbs right handed pitcher hit almost every spot his catcher gave him. I found myself standing next to a representative of the Kansas City Royals, who was clocking Smith with a radar gun. From the few pitches I was able to get a glimpse of, Smith was hitting the 90mph mark rather routinely. For those who do not know a lot about high school baseball, 90mph at this level is fascinating and will certainly draw attention from the pro teams. The bobcats, who were seeking to avenge
the extra inning loss earlier in the season to the Cobras, struggled to get runners on base early. However in the bottom of the third, after getting a runner in scoring position, which came rare on Saturday, Bobcat and future Miami Hurricane Michael Amditis stepped up to the plate. Amditis, the most productive offensive player for Boca High, who is tallying a .561 avg. with 6 homers and 26 RBI’s coming into the game, connected on of Smith’s fastballs, sending a rope to left field. Since the entire Park Vista outfield was giving Amdits the much earned respect by playing with their backs nearly on the wall, the left fielder was able to make the play, but had no chance of getting the tagging runner from third base. Boca took a 1-0 lead. Boca Raton had a dominant pitcher of their own on the mound. Jagger McCoy, the 6’2 hard throwing lefty was sensational in his own right. With only 1 run to work with, McCoy was asked to completely shutdown the nationally ranked Cobras, an almost impossible task, and he nearly did just that. After not surrounding a single run for the first 5 innings, McCoy was pitching with great rhythm and confidence. The combination of his fastball and off speed pitches kept the cobras off the scoreboard for the majority of the game. This was the case until the top of the 5th inning. With no runners on, Joe Genord of Park Vista hit a shot they may not have landed yet. The solo homerun cleared the left-center field fence, and the game was tied 1-1 just like that. The entire Park Vista dugout erupted with joy, as the fans who made the trip began cheering and
