The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is planning a new $2 million boardwalk and tower to replace the original wooden structures that have been in place since 1986. The man-made, 1/4-mile loop, which winds through the area’s natural hardwood hammock environment and leads to the 40-foot overlook tower, has been shut down for repairs since February. That’s when officials abruptly closed the trail for repair and renovation until further notice.

However, many ers agreed that it has the potential to be

We want to develop an integral, self-sustaining organization in which everyone is contributing to the success of the students. We believe we can make a difference.” One of InnovATE’s collaborations will be the creation of the BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) summer program for high school students to stimulate interest in STEM and improve college readiness. “They’ll be doing all kinds of hands-on activities, and we hope to get their creative juices flowing,” says BEST developer Oleg Andric, co-principal investigator for InnovATE as well as associate professor and department chair of the Electrical Power Technology program. “We are looking forward to all of the exciting things that we’ll be doing with the school district and the great support of our industry partners. Starting with middle school, we’ll always be in their face, doing something fun with them and showcasing that engineering,

science and technology are not scary… hopefully that results in some significant increases and interest in these fields.” Along with interest, students need a good knowledge of algebra to succeed in the College’s programs. To this end, the InnovATE team hopes to remove the “fear factor,” as noted by co-principal investigator and mathematics professor Ira A. Rosenthal, who will work with Andric to develop contextualized Intermediate Algebra labs that integrate problems related to engineering and the activities done in the BEST summer program. “Math is always a challenging topic for students,” she says. “We’re trying to make it more interesting, and hopefully students will be more successful if they see the connections and relevance of math to their own area of study. That’s the goal.” The grant-winning project is titled InnovATE, both as a reflection of its mission and a nod to the grantor: NSF’s Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant program. Designed for community colleges, the ATE program promotes partnerships between academic institutions and industry to improve the education of science and engineering technicians for high-technology fields.

Boca Bacchanal Draws Big Gathering By Jake Di Pippo

The 13th Annual Boca Bacchanal returned last week as over 1,500 guests poured into the Boca Raton Airport Hangar for a fun and eventful evening. This was the first time the event has been held at this particular location, and it was certainly a success. The Boca Bacchanal brings a festive two day weekend to the city every year to celebrate wine and food, as well as donate to charity. The Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum are the beneficiaries of this year’s event. Private jets tours, Ferrari presentations, and luxurious jewelry are just a few of the amazing displays guests had the chance of viewing upon arrival. Live entertainment had performers wowing guests all night, including an aerialist and a juggler. While all of this was certainly incredible, there was nothing better than the delicious wine and food that was available. Over 40 restaurants from all across south Florida were present, as guests had the opportunity to try a wide variety of different foods. Award winning, nationally recognized chefs joined the festivities, including Erik Niel of Easy Bistro, Piero Promoli of Pricci, and Derek Tidwell from George’s at Alys Beach, to name a few. Famous vintners from all over the world were there to provide tasting of over

140 varieties of wines. The vintners who were invited to showcase their selections include: HALL Wines from St. Helena, CA, Clos Pegase of Napa, CA, Agricola Buccelletti Winery of Italy, Twomey Cellers by Silver Oak Cellars from Calistoga CA, and Sequoia Grove Winery from Napa, CA. The fun didn’t end here. The Saturday night following Fridays event was just as spectacular. 7 beautiful homes all throughout Palm Beach County held a luxurious vintner dinner for guests. Each dinner had the pleasure of one of the top chefs creating an unforgettable 5 course meal, as well as an exclusive vintner to compliment the meal with their particular wine. “This year’s 2015 Boca Bacchanal is growing with the Boca Raton Community,” states Mary Csar, executive director of the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum. “The annual Boca Bacchanal event benefits the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum’s mission to preserve, share and celebrate our local history. The proceeds from Boca Bacchanal go directly back into your community to build an identity and sense of place in Boca Raton for generations to come.” Tickets for the Bacchanal event sold for $125, while the Vintner dinners were $325. www.bocaratontribune.com

Iconic Preachers Die During the Easter Season The universe, in particular the faith community, lost two theological giants this week with the deaths of the Rev. Robert Schuller and Rev. Gardner Calvin Taylor. Rev. Schuller, founder and pastor of the 2,700-seat Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, and one of America’s first televangelists - launching TV’s “Hour of Power” in 1970 - died Thursday at a nursing home in Artesia, California, from esophageal cancer. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Rev. Taylor, who was widely regarded as the dean of American preaching and who played a key role in the civil rights movement, died Sunday at the Duke University Medical Center. He has earlier attended Easter services at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, and a luncheon with his wife, Phillis Taylor. She said the cause was apparently a heart attack. Rev. Schuller was 88 and Rev. Taylor was 96. How appropriate was it that God called Rev. Schuller home on the dawn of Easter weekend and Rev. Taylor on Resurrection Sunday. I was not among the fortunate to have met either. However, I have watched and listened to hours of sermons they spun from tales, anecdotes and Scriptures. And

I must say that in both life and death the men made their imprint on this world as they preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As I listened one of Rev. Taylor’s sermons, it was like hearing the voice of God. He whispered one moment and then in his baritone he shouted the word, he patted, pinched and probed it. His message was punctuated with rich poetic rhythm and imagery. He is not a preacher by profession but by nature. It’s no wonder he was in 1996, named one of the 12 best preachers in the Englishspeaking world based on a survey of seminary professors and editors of religious journals. Several of their protégées have started churches that have redefined the landscape of evangelical Christianity in the United States and have impacted the world forever. Both men are revered by heads of state for their relationship with God. And while the gifted clergymen appreciated the accolades and honors they received during their ministerial career, they relished humility. In 1993, Rev. Taylor gave the preinauguration sermon for President-elect Bill Clinton at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in Washington, and in 2000 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian

honor, from President Clinton. In 1995, during a tough moment in his presidency, President Clinton invited Rev. Schuller to the White House for a private prayer meeting. News reports said the reverend prayed with him in the Lincoln Bedroom. The next year, the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat invited Rev. Schuller to a private meeting to discuss hopes for world peace. Both men cared deeply about the lost and downtrodden. With his trademark broad smile, the kind-faced Rev. Schuller – who started his church literally by knocking on doors in an Iowa farming town - was a Sundaymorning fixture in countless homes for more than 40 years. The “Hour of Power” became the nation’s most watched weekly religious program in the 1980s. The white-haired pastor who wore lavender and purple vestments was an apostle of positive thinking and a symbol of success. The charismatic shepherd later opened a church in a drive-in movie theater so that people could worship without being noticed and literally drive away if they felt uncomfortable. This was the dawn of creating worship environments that are welcoming to those who do not normally go to church. Rev. Taylor was the grandson of slaves

and overcame the South’s segregation in his childhood to earn a bachelor’s degree at Oberlin College’s School of Theology in 1940. Eight years later, he took over a Baptist pulpit in Brooklyn, New York when overt racism defined much of American life. He would later become an influential voice for civil rights and one of the nation’s most eloquent churchmen. He led Concord Baptist Church of Christ for more than four decades, building the congregation into one of the largest churches in New York. NBC radio broadcast his sermons starting in the 1950s. As we mourn the loss of these two giants, may we find encouragement and inspiration by remembering their legacies and knowing that our nation as a whole is diminished by the death of these two servants of God. Both men were deeply committed to religious diversity and all those who advocate for real religious freedom. The Rev. Robert Schuller and Rev. Gardner Calvin Taylor were the forerunners of church growth and spreaders of hope across the nations. They indeed brought humanity in touch with its Creator.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Celebrate Your Personal Uniqueness! People exist in different sizes, shapes, and colors. Their voices may be individually identifiable; their laughter is fully their own. Their talents are varied, and their personalities are quite unique. Because of all that, every person is most hard, if not impossible, to copy. Like snow flakes, people are saturated with individuality. Furthermore, every person is important in the world. That’s why war is so deplorable, even when necessary, and murder is a

most heinous crime. That’s also the reason why many battles for human rights must be fought and won, through solid guidelines. Holy Scripture tells that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and that speaks not only of our physical frames and their functioning, but of every single, intricate aspect of our humanity also, which makes “me” me, and “you” you! Someone suggested that after God made you, He threw away the mould, never to use it again! Indeed, no one else is like you!

Therefore, every time you look in the mirror, be grateful for what you see. And I don’t mean the mirror itself, nor its frame, but your own self. Always remember that you are special, no matter what others may think or say! Recognize the good in other selves, by paying value to them, by affirming them. As a contemporary author and preacher asserted, “God has no wastebaskets. But for every person and for everything there is a purpose.” If you look for good things in other

people, you will surely find them. With all this in mind, each day rejoice at your own self; recognize that you are special; never lose sight of the fact that you and all fellow humans are beautiful creations of Almighty God. As the late Reuel Howe encouraged: “Choose to say ‘I am who I am and look forward to the I am that I am becoming’.”

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

The stars were aligned as Daniel Ulbricht, New York City Ballet award-winning Principal dancer and his Stars of American Ballet troupe shined as they performed with Boca Ballet Theatre. Presented by Madelyn Savarick and Boca Ballet Theatre, the dancers awed the audience on the Michael and Madelyn Savarick Stage at the Countess de Hoernle Theatre at Spanish River. The crowd was captivated by the complex choreography in each vignette, from Christopher Wheelden’s After The Rain, to the outstanding premiere of Meditation from Thais. Ulbricht had jaws dropping in his solo piece, Celeritas, and Boca Ballet Theatre’s performance of Valse-Fantaisie was purely enchanting. Last but not least: the featured piece, Fancy Free, which was full of energy, high leaps and jumps, and a special nostalgic charm. The evening was a rare opportunity to experience such immense artistry outside of Lincoln Center, featuring NYCB stars Daniel Ulbricht, Tyler Angle, Craig Hall, Tyler Angle, Rebecca Krohn, and Georgina Pazcoguin, and Ballet San Jose stars Ommi Pipit Suksun and Rudy Candia. Dancers’ appearances were made possible by: Nancy & Ellis J. Parker, III with additional support by the Alvin & Louise Myerberg Family Foundation. The show opened with guest emcee Steven Caras, former NYCB dancer and subject of

the Emmy Award-winning documentary, Steven Caras: See Them Dance. The nature of the program corresponds directly with Boca Ballet Theatre’s mission to provide an opportunity for the new generation of aspiring dancers to perform with professionals - “Where the stars of tomorrow join the stars of today”. After the extraordinary performance, guests gathered at the Seagate Beach Club for “Dinner with the Stars”, a special benefit dinner to honor the artists, sponsored by Honorary Chairs Esther and Sid Dinerstein. Thanks to Anthony Wilson, owner of Seagate Beach Club, for taking care of every detail. Daniel Ulbricht and the dancers mingled with patrons, enjoying oceanfront cocktails and dining. The room was filled with myriad dance lovers from the Palm Beach area, including Madelyn Savarick, Nancy & Ellis J. Parker, III, Steven Caras, Jenni Myerberg, Marilyn Meyerhoff, Linda Maybarduk, Holli Rockwell and Joe Trubinsky, Anka Palitz, Frank and Phyllis Loconto, Sam Feldman, and Maestro James BrooksBruzzese, Artistic Director of Symphony of the Americas, and his wife Sharon. Don’t miss Boca Ballet Theatre’s next production, The Sleeping Beauty on Friday, May 1 – Sunday, May 3 at FAU’s University Theatre. While many students saw the day off from school as a chance to sleep in, pick up a few extra hours at work or play with friends, one group spent the morning cruising on a 50-foot motor yacht, the Sea Fox. The trip was a reward for good grades. “Getting good grades do pay off,” said Brianna Holiday, a 9th grader at Atlantic High School and secretary of the Atlantic All-Stars Leadership Academy mentoring program. “I have never been on a boat before and this is truly an amazing experience.” The hour-long trip along the Intracoastal Waterway was made possible by Boca Raton resident Jack Fox who took them up to Delray Beach and back on his luxury yacht. Fox lauded them for earning good grades and encouraged them to finish high school and possible go on to college. “If you work hard every day of your life, one day you too will have the opportunity to own your boat or home or one of these beautiful places in south Florida,” Fox, president of the Beach Condominium Association of Boca Raton/Highland Beach and a board member of the Boca Raton Airport Authority, told them over lunch. “Think about the great future that this country offers you. It’s all achievable.” Officials with KOP mentoring network program, the parent organization for the mentoring programs at Atlantic High and Village Academy, uses gifts of intrinsic value as rewards and incentives to encourage students to do their best. “Since there was no school today, I thought it would be a good day to take them out on the water as I promised them at the beginning of the school year,” said C. Ron Allen, who founded the organization in the late 1980s. “I gave them a challenge and they lived up to their end so I am fulfilling my commitment.”

www.bocaratontribune.com

Students who earn a C overall average receive a computer, B’s get them on a boat ride and for earning A’s, they get a ride in an airplane. Allen, who also is editor of the Boca Raton Tribune and Delray Beach Tribune newspapers, is organizing “Soar for the Stars” day when local pilots will take the students flying from the Boca Raton airport at the end of the school year. “Whatever it takes to get them excelling academically,” said Allen, who rewarded the students with bicycles, provided by Delray Beach Police Department and Wal-Mart, before stepping up to the boat cruise. “I’m all about the results. We get the best when we pay adults or feed them. So it’s no different with children. We offer them incentives to do their best in school.” Parent Joi Odom Grant thinks rewarding students tends to have its advantages. “When students know that there’s a reward at the end, they tend to do better at trying to accomplish the task,” said Grant, a parent of two of the students on the trip. Friday’s cruise was the second for Cameron Marshal, a third-grader at JC Mitchell Elementary in Boca Raton. She was among another group of students who were rewarded with the cruise and lunch at Deck 84 in Delray Beach last year. “I enjoy going out on the water,” she said. “It is so much fun.” Following the cruise, the students were treated to lunch at the Boca Raton Yacht & Racquet Club restaurant. “You could not have asked for a better way to spend the day off from school,” said Tyler Grant, who along with her twin Troi, we’re celebrating the 18th birthday. “It certainly is a great reward and a great incentive for students to have.” For more information on KOP mentoring network program, call 561-665-0151 or visit kopmn.org.

Passover Sedar and Oklahoma at the Wick Theater Bob and I attended a Passover Sedar at the home of my friend, Karen Burke along with several others. After dinnerI headed over to the Wick Theater for the opening night of Oklahoma with my friend, Kris Tadich. The show was one of the best shows I have seen at the Wick so far with a huge cast of very talented young actors and dancers. Don’t miss this one! It was a great evening with a cocktail reception following the show.

Narcissism — At A Cost?

Dan Marino & The Golden Bun

What is the relationship between the egos of a company’s leaders and the success or profitability of the company? That is an interesting question that was examined during a study conducted by Australia’s Macquarie Graduate School of Management. According to an article about the institution’s research, published on ChiefExecutive.net, the study discovered an interesting link between narcissism in CEOs and their company’s stock performance. In particular, the study cited language commonly used by top corporate executives during their quarterly earnings communications with stockholders. Those conducting the research examined which pronouns were typically used, such as “I” or “me,” which would refer personally to the CEO, rather than “us” or “we,” words that would typically refer more to the entire leadership team or even the company’s entire staff. Although the study’s scope was focused primarily on Australia, the researchers determined the stock price of companies led by the least narcissistic CEOs – those less inclined to talk in terms of “I” or “me” – performed twice as well as their peers. Similar research was conducted in America. Although the contrast was not as profound, findings also showed the more humble leaders also outperformed their peers. In today’s media we often see top executives appearing in TV, radio and print media commercials to promote their companies, along with their respective products and services. Often these leaders become celebrities in their own right. Celebrity status, however, does not always correlate with success.

This assessment was not totally surprising. In his book, Good to Great, author Jim Collins observed the best leaders – labeled as Level 5 Leaders – were “modest and willful, humble and fearless.” He explained they “never wanted to become larger-thanlife heroes. They never aspired to be put on a pedestal or become unreachable heroes. They were seemingly ordinary people producing extraordinary results.” Genuine humility is a recurring theme we see in the Bible, a virtue it shows is all too often lacking among top leaders. Here is a sampling of what it says in the wisdom book of Proverbs: Humility precedes honor and averts disaster. Pride – the opposite of humility – can blind us to our shortcomings. Humility allows for honest self-appraisal, and also leaves room for the counsel and assistance of others. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).“Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12). Humility can be rewarding. Although financial results should not be our reason for being humble, humility often does come with rewards. “The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). Humility can lead to recognition. Attempts to bring attention to oneself can backfire, leading to disgrace rather than commendation. “Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it is better for him to say to you, ‘Come up here,’ than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman” (Proverbs 25:6-7).

Over the last fifteen years I have represented some of the best known professional athletes in the United States with their matrimonial situations from prenuptial agreement to divorce. Many times I have been asked to defend the athletes from paternity suits, or pursue child support on behalf of women who have been impregnated by wealthy and well known athletes. Of course, after first blood tests, and now DNA tests those cases are usually simple cases of applying the child support guidelines of Florida as modified by appellate law, which limits child support to reasonable and necessary amounts of money. After reading about the Dan Marino/ Donna, Savattere tryst, and its offspring I recalled that there was a term often used by my wealthy client dads and very un-wealthy moms, “the Golden Bun”, as in “the bun in the oven.” (For those of you under thirty years old “bun in the oven” refers to a pregnancy.) I have heard a one night stand mom defend her morals by claiming that she loved my client, “but I wasn’t after a Golden Bun.” The Dan and Donna case makes me wonder why two smart people had forgot-

ten about birth control at just the right moment. Did Donna tell Dan that she was on “the pill” and not to worry? Was Donna going for the “Golden Bun?” The long happily married Dan did or didn’t travel with an extra pack or two of condoms, but a New York sports caster lady in her mid thirties probably had a box of them in her night table drawer and didn’t suggest one, and if not, why not. Was her biological clock running out? Did she want to hit the double jackpot, a child of her own and enough money to retire? Did Dan just decide to ride bareback for the hell of it; damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead? Did passion trump reason and logic or was Donna really hanging out just for that “Golden Bun?” Without pleading justification for Dan or using too many football metaphors it appears to me that while both teams were playing the game, one had a great “hail Mary” in mind which she executed perfectly. I had seen Dan throw an interception late in fourth quarters before. I don’t blame either player for being a human being. I hope that the golden bun grows up to have a happy life knowing that she is loved by both her parents.

Axiom in Action Experiential Learning Seminars

Twenty-Five years ago, when Trevor Cavanagh graduated from high school, he officially became an adult in the eyes of the world. Yet, Trevor was unsure of what to do next. “I had very little ambition, direction and motivation. I had no concept of what it meant to live life independently, and how the decisions I made were directly influencing my future.” Preferring the beach to the classroom, Trevor made the decision to not go to college. With little experience, Trevor’s options for work were limited. “Reality struck when my parents asked me to pay rent. I was already paying for my car insurance and gas. I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to afford to live on my own and I began to fear that I would be living with my parents forever. I struggled with how I’d support myself. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was not only lacking money, but also the life skills I needed to navigate my life in the adult world.” Trevor felt lost, confused, and immature. “I continually found myself searching for what to do next. No one asked if I was ready, or if I knew how to manage my life and emotions before catapulting me into

adulthood. I really had no sense of how unprepared I was for the real world.“ Rather than go to work full-time at an undesirable job, Trevor joined the Marine Corps in search of a bed, three meals a day, and a sense of purpose. Yet, he soon discovered the military was not the life of independence he desired. Still unsure of what to do next after the Marines, Trevor enrolled in college with an undeclared major. In search of a major, Trevor recognized that he was fascinated by the great diversity of our world and humanity, and was inspired to travel to many countries around the world to learn more about people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. “I simply enjoy studying what it means to be human. I was, and am still intrigued by the very essence of life and what people experience, past and present. Despite what job, title, or even where or when a person lived, I see that all people have certain fundamental needs, but also require certain life skills to maximize their feelings of success and happiness.” Trevor pursued his interests, earning degrees in human development, family studies, philosophy, education and counseling. He spent the following years as an educator working with people of all ages and demographics in both Colorado and California. Eventually, his own struggles as a teenager led him to direct his energy to assisting young people as they prepared to transition to adulthood. Working as a high school and college instructor, Trevor began to create new and innovative activities that

gave students the opportunity to experience these life skills rather than just hear about them. According to the World Health Organization’s definition “Life skills are abilities that help us to adapt and behave positively so that we can effectively deal with the challenges of everyday life.” Trevor says “Life skills should not be taught by lectures and using textbooks. The most effective way to teach life skills is by allowing young people to actively experience using the skills.” Now, over 20 years after entering adulthood, Trevor serves young people through the experiential learning company Axiom in Action, that is designed to assist in the examination of one’s own life, and building the life skills needed to navigate the world as an independent adult. He believes in setting an example by conversing and showing young people effective strategies that will help them to have a clearer sense of self so they can better manage their goals and corresponding responsibilities. Axiom in Action offers a curriculum in life skills that every teen should know before graduating to adulthood. By allowing youth to practice these essential skills, and to learn from their own mistakes, we help them to clarify and polish their own skills prior to entering adulthood. Axiom in Action offers an on-going series of seminars specifically designed to address the important life skills of Communication, Problem-Solving, Decision-Making, Critical and Creative Thinking, Time Management,

and Self-Awareness. In addition to these life skills, Axiom in Action offers techniques for coping with stress and strong emotions, and teaches empathy, gratitude, and optimism. Teamwork is essential in learning all these skills and therefore is a component of every seminar. Since people mostly spend their time at work, Axiom in Action also offers mini-seminars and workshops on post-secondary school options and career development. For more information about Axiom in Action and the seminars and workshops they offer, visit their website at www.AxiomInAction.com or email info@axiominaction. com .

More Bang For The Buck in “Furious 7”

David Reid, longtime resident of and volunteer to

the Boca Raton community, passed away on March 31st in Orlando, Florida after a long battle with complications from a stroke. David was born on October 14th, 1953 in Florence, Alabama to the late Homer “Rock” Reid and Patricia Coughlin Reid. In the 1980’s his office supply sales career brought him to South Florida where he would spend the next 25 years before moving to Orlando in 2005. David will be remembered for his dedication to his family and passionate involvement in community service. He directed traffic for over a decade outside of Boca Raton Christian School where his daughters attended, continuing long after both had graduated. He was a regular face at recreational leagues serving as a coach for Boca Hoops, SABR of Boca Raton, the local softball league, and as an announcer for the Boca Mantas Swim Team. David is survived by his longtime wife and partner, Nancy Reid; his two daughters, Niki Reid and Patricia Reid Mason; his son-in-law, Daniel Mason; his grandchildren, Riley and Dylan Reid Mason; his twin brother Mike Reid and younger brother Al Reid, and their families. A service will be held at 11am on Friday, April 10th, at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Orlando, Florida. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in David Reid’s memory to the National Stroke Association (www.stroke.org).

At the very least “Furious 7” delivers more bang for the buck. James Wan (“Saw,” “The Conjuring”) takes the helm for this seventh and possibly last installment in the phenomenally popular and successful car-chase, shoot ‘em up, blow ‘em up series. Chris Morgan, who wrote episodes five and six, also wrote this outlandish, totally unbelievable caper. Credibility has never been a strong suit of “Fast & Furious.” Personality and friendly camaraderie is. This yarn is special because Paul Walker, who played dropped-dead gorgeous good guy Brian O’Connor, was killed in a car accident before filming wrapped. With his two brothers as stand-ins and a lot of CG magic, the film was completed, with an especially emotional ending. The movie is dedicated simply “For Paul.” Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto has been the main guy through all the worldwide adventures. It is quite evident the big lug loved and respected Paul Walker. The plot is about as logical as a Roadrunner cartoon. Basically it is a series of setups of increasingly spectacular stunts. The other principal big lug, Dwayne “Rock” Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, is laid up for much of the action with a broken arm and leg. Don’t fret, Hobbs will spring back to action at the last moment to maximum effect. The instigator of this brewing war is British badass Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), who is mighty pissed his younger brother got rubbed out in the last episode. Shaw is just one of a multi-national, multiethnic cast. Vin Diesel’s Dom is purportedly Italian. His girlfriend and comrade Letty

(Michelle Rodriguez) is Latina, and afflicted with amnesia this time. African American Chris “Ludicris” Bridges, is the gang’s tech expert. Fellow black man Tyrese Gibson provides comic relief as Roman, who is kind of a black Barney Fife, who always pulls through nevertheless. The cast’s resident Asian, Han (Sung Kang), was killed off in the last episode. Beautiful Jordana Brewster has an expanded role as Brian O’Connors wife. A new character is another beautiful woman, Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays an improbable computer genius/hacker known as Ramsey. Kurt Russell makes a welcome return to action as the mysterious Mr. Nobody, who instinctively knows the Furious gang are the right ones to pull off a risky mission. “Furious” episodes are best-remembered by their incredible stunts. This one has the whole crew parachuting in from a cargo plane in their cars, ready to peel out when they hit the road in a former Soviet territory to capture a “God’s Eye” computer device that can track anyone anywhere in the world instantaneously. A dubiously tasteful sequence in Aba Dubai has Dom and Brian piloting a $3 million sportscar through plate glass and hurtling through space from one high rise tower to another as if gravity never existed. “What we are is family, your family,” Dom tells Brian after the team emerges unscathed from a battle that almost destroys downtown Los Angeles. “Furious” may be rough and tough, but it has a caring heart. ‘Super Human’ Fish Oil! Ivy league physicians affiliated with Yale University believe their patented 4:1 ratio of EPA/DHA omega-3s are the future of fatty-acid therapy and deliver almost ‘super human’ results. Prevention Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Omax3® Ultra PureTM, have decided to poor memory, or mood swings, this formula giveaway 1,000 boxes in a massive initiawill help or you don’t pay for it. tive to get consumers to try it. “We believe one dose of this high performance 1.5g of omega-3 will change your opinion of fish oil with the dramatic results,” says Terry Tormey, CEO of Prevention Pharmaceuticals. Ultra Pure Formula Equals Safety Some supplements may contain more than just omega-3. And some of that "extra" content you could do without, such as saturated fats, including unwanted omega-6 fatty acids, and toxins like mercury, lead, and PCBs commonly found in fish. Freezer Test Proves Purity Omax3® was shown in lab tests to be 91% pure, free of bad fats and toxins. You can prove this by freezing your own fish oil. Put a pill of your store bought brand of omega3 in the freezer overnight. Then put Omax3® Ultra PureTM in the freezer overnight. The difference is clear. The store bought brand will be cloudy, even a solid white. This is caused by the bad fats and toxins solidifying, which your body doesn’t need. Omax3® will remain clear, which equals safety and effectiveness. Lacrosse Suffers First SSC Loss of Season to No. 15 FIT

Lynn University’s lacrosse team suffered its first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season to 15th-ranked Florida Tech, 11-8, on Friday night. The Fighting Knights fall to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in league play while FIT improves to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the SSC. Brian Kiel scored his first hat trick of the season leading the Blue & White with four points in the loss. Nick Wynne put the Panthers on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal four

minutes into play but Jacob Van Leenen answered back with an unassisted goal of his own to even the score 1-1 two minutes later. Andrew Conley tallied FIT’s second goal at 8:17 and Charlie Morrisette added another goal with 1:24 left in the period for the Panthers to lead 3-1 after the opening 15 minutes. Lynn went on to score three unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 4-3 at halftime. Kiel’s first goal brought the game

within one goal at 9:48 and Austin Jerhoff found the back of the net on an assist from Mark Snellman 44 seconds later tying the game at 3-all. Kiel’s second goal gave Lynn its first lead of the game, 4-3. After the break, Charlie Morrisette scored a man up goal 41 seconds into the third quarter on an assist by Zach Wynne to once again tie the game. Lynn’s Tyler Janvrin notched an unassisted goal at 13:19 for a 5-4 Fighting Knights lead but the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to lead 8-5 with 5:13 to play in the period. Sam Turner scored his first goal of the game on Kiel’s lone assis at 4:08 to bring the game within two but Morrisette scored another man-up goal just before the two minute mark for a 9-6 lead the held until the end of the quarter. Conley made it a 10-6 game with an unassisted goal for the Panthers at 13:46 in the final frame. Sam Turner turned in his second point of the game at 5:15 making it a 10-7 game. Minutes later head coach Brian Kingsbury pulled Taylor Ferrino from goal and replaced him with Dante Egan. The change worked as Egan pulled himself from goal as to add another defender for

the Fighting Knights. Caleb Cerf caused a turnover with 2:49 to play as Jordon Van Leenen grabbed the ground ball. Lynn was successful on the clear attempted and at 1:56 Brian Kiel scored on an assist from Janvrin bringing the score to 10-8 in FIT’s favor. With one minute remaining the Fighting Knights pulled their goalie and Jason Terry scored on the open net with 32 seconds left in regulation giving the Panthers a 11-8 lead that would hold until the final horn buzzed. Ferrino made 11 saves in between the pipes for the Blue & White and Vincent Genovesi won 9-of-21 face-offs. The Fighting Knights were successful on 12-of-14 clear attempts but served seven penalties in the loss. FIT outshot Lynn 35-27 and slightly edged the home team 26-24 in groundballs. Genovesi led Lynn with a team-best 7 groundballs and Cerf caused three turnovers for the Fighting Knights. Ferrino allowed 10 goals in 57 minutes and Egan was credited with one goal against in his first career appearance as a goalkeeper.

Owls Drop Doubleheader to #13 Kentucky Florida Atlantic University junior third baseman Carnesha Thompson went 3-for-6 on the day, including a homerun, but the FAU softball team lost a doubleheader to #13 Kentucky on Monday. FAU (26-14-1) lost the first game 3-1. Three Owl errors and two Wildcat hits allowed Kentucky (26-11) to score three runs in the bottom of the third inning. FAU answered in the top of the fourth when Thompson drove in Lindsey Shell with a base hit up the middle. The Owls threatened in the sixth

and actually had the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh, but the UK third baseman snagged a liner to end the game. UK won game two 7-1. The Wildcats again scored three runs in the third inning on two hits, two walks and two illegal pitches. Thompson, likewise, responded in the next half inning, this time with a solo homerun to left field, her second of the season. UK broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Owls tried to mount a rally, but

were unable to score, sealing the sweep. "In the first game, we gave them too much help with the errors," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "In the second game, we couldn't seem to get that one hit when we needed it that would have really put some pressure on (Kentucky). Then, late in the game, they had a big inning that put (the game) out of reach." The Owls will return to Boca Raton to host Charlotte in a threegame series beginning on Saturday, April 11.

Despite a modern-era record crowd of 11,691, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers struggled in the second half of their NASL season opener versus the New York Cosmos. Leo Fernandes’ header in the 58th minute proved to be the difference on a night where everything was going right for the Strikers. “The atmosphere was great,” said Strikers forward Aly Alberto Hassan. “We were disappointed with the result but it’s a long season and we can’t dwell too much on this result.” “We played a very solid game for the beginning of the season,” said Strikers’ Head Coach Marcelo Neveleff. “We need to do a little better in front of the goal, but the score is not indicative of the way the match was played.” With the loss, the Strikers remain winless versus the Cosmos since their return to the NASL three years ago with a 0-5-1 record. Strikers’ captain Léo Moura made his presence felt in the 6th minute with a high cross into the penalty area and played very well throughout the entire game with his dazzling passes and near goals from set pieces. “It was our first game together,” explained Moura through an interpreter. “We created a lot of chances, we just couldn’t score.” “It was our first game together,” explained Moura. “We created a lot of chances, we just couldn’t score.”

Strikers midfielder Victor ‘PC’ Giro had the best opportunity for the home team in the 38th minute. His right-footed blast inside the penalty was on target was saved by Maurer. “We played a good game,” said PC. “In the first half we were able to set our pace and the fact the goal didn’t come was a detail.” However, in the second half things were different. Fort Lauderdale continued to attack the goal but in a 58th-minute corner by former Strikers midfielder Walter Restrepo that found the perfect placement for Fernades for the header, the game changed. “It’s unfortunate that we were scored on in a set piece, but now it’s time to forget this game and move on and focus on Jacksonville,” added PC after the game. Despite the scoreline, the new attackminded Strikers outshot New York 14 to 8 and doubled up 6 to 3 on the shots on goal category. Stefano Pinho, Moura and PC came close to scoring for the Strikers in the first half, all forcing Maurer to make good saves for the Cosmos. “This week we have to work more on setpieces, both offensive and defensive,” added PC. “We had many chances off set-pieces and sometimes, like tonight, a set-piece can be the difference.” The Strikers now prepare for an in-state rivalry at Lockhart Stadium on Saturday, April 11 as they host expansion-side Jacksonville Armada, who broke the NASL single-game attendance record this weekend with 16,164 fans at EverBank Field.
