Rising Tides for Autistic Employment By Sam Smith
With a towel thrown over his shoulder, a vacuum in hand and sweat dripping from his face, Tyler Leslie prepares to tackle his next car at Rising Tide Car Wash. Working at the Parkland car wash may seem like a breeze. But it is no comparison to a walk in the park. “It’s hot outside but we work really hard,” says Lelie, who enjoys checking out the cars between detailing them. Upon visiting Rising Tide, one might not immediately noticed that most of the employees have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. But upon paying close attention, what becomes evident is the joy and dedication the employees have for their jobs. Continue on page 3

• Boca Raton resident Jeff Davis is the new Chairman of the Palm Beach International Film Festival and will remake the festival, among other things, leasing the former Plaza Theater in Manalapan as the Festival’s new home, finance the venue’s operations until it gets on its feet, proposing new plans in a few weeks to be presented to the board and bringing in new blood to run it. Former director Randi Emerman has left but her $150,000 back salary still has to be resolved. Palm Beach County Film Commissioner Chuck Elderd attributed the festival’s financial problems to its leadership saying “Maybe they’ve solved the problem…. bringing in a businessman chairman to take it apart and put it back together again.” • Brian Mast will speak at the Downtown Library, 400 NW 2 Ave. Boca Raton, 6:30 p.m. May 6. Community Rising Tides for Autistic Employment
Continue from page 1 In a job which is often undervalued by many, these workers take pride and together express a vibrant sense of camaraderie. John D’Eri and his family created Rising Tide Car Wash April 2013 to provide job opportunities to those previously marginalized in the workplace with autism. “We opened to employ those with Autism, that’s it,” said D’Eri whose son, Andrew, is on the spectrum and one of those employed by the company. “That’s the only reason we’re here.”
In the past two years, Rising Tide Car Wash has continued to grow and now has 43 employees, 35 of whom are autistic. This makes the wash the largest retail employer of adults on the spectrum in the country. About 1 in 68 people has autism spectrum disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Autism is a disorder of many voices, but for each unique individual diagnosed as “on the spectrum,” integration into the workforce can be challenging. Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder are general terms used to describe a range of developmental disabilities. These disabilities can be characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and behavioral challenges. Only 15 percent of those with autism have full-time jobs, according to research by the National Autistic Society. But here in South Florida, there is one company that has made it its mission to include these stories of diversity as an integral part of its business and its “secret sauce” to delivering a superior product. “It’s really amazing what they’re doing for a community that is often sidelined when
it comes to job opportunities,” said Maria Hodge who has two nephews with ASD and frequents the wash. Rising Tide has made a name for itself nationally as it was featured on NBCs Nightly News with Brian Williams. But the mission of Rising Tide Car Wash is kept alive by an effort to provide the best product on the market and D’Eri holds his employees to high standards that deliver just that. “We project empowerment and we project a superior product due to the nature of our staff,” he said. “We don’t project a sub-level product and hope that people come to support a cause.” The incorporation of neurological diversity into the workplace has become more prevalent in recent years. Companies such as Freddie Mac and German computer software giant SAP both acknowledge that autism lends itself to special skills that can be used to increase productivity, especially in production oriented and process driven tasks. “The diversity can be harnessed in a positive way in many business environments” D’Eri said. “If other businesses think their
environment can be structured and they feel that that structure can be taught, then they can have the benefit of an employee that embraces and thrives in a structured workplace.”

Saluting Our Unsung Heroes For Dan W. Calloway and the seven others recognized for their community service at a luncheon recently, giving back just makes sense. As I sat and listened to their acceptance speeches, one message was constant: In serving others, you let your light shine, and you give others the license to let their lights shine. The 37th Annual Reomia S. Bennett Scholarship Luncheon highlighted community members and leaders who worked to give back and help others. Honorees were Mr. Marvin Leonard, Mr. John E. Jenkins, Ms. Patricia Mainor Johnson, Min. Noble Jewell Lockhart-Mays, Ms. Gloria Scott, Ms. Vanessa Young and yours truly. The honorees varied in types of community service. When you read their bios though, you will see that they are all leaders and role models. Truly, these are unsung heroes, ordinary residents who have not gotten a lot of fanfare. But most of all, people who have a heart of gold for giving. Take for example, Mr. Calloway, who has worked tirelessly for the past 49 years to support the young people of Palm Beach County through mentoring and athletics. Many of his protégées became profes-
sional athletes. He has always impressed on them the importance of being responsible, contributing citizens who give back to their community. And there was Ms. Scott, another crusader who - for years - has worked tirelessly for underserved children in the county. Upon meeting her, one will immediately sense her enthusiasm, passionate approach and organizational abilities. In her role at the Urban League of Palm Beach County, she leads several community programs and works specifically with schools and police agencies on initiatives to provide valuable experiences for young people across the county. For 38 years Mr. Jenkins guided students through the maze of high school and college life as a counselor and coordinator of student activities. Now the retiree mentors second and third grade boys at a local elementary school, he drives cancer patients to treatments and he is active in his church. Ms. Mainor Johnson, who worked 32 years in the school system, corrals children under her wings and offers them encouragement and guidance. She monitors their academic progress and urges them to pursue careers in public speaking, which she thinks builds their self-confidence to achieve.
Ms. Lockhart-Mays, an ordained minister, left teaching after 12 years to start Faith’s Place Centers for Education, Inc., which offers preschool and afterschool enrichment programs; and Ms. Young, director of Community Outreach at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, develops and builds collaborations with underrepresented segments of the community. This committed social justice warrior has exposed thousands of less-fortunate children to the arts and has made it possible for more than two million students to attend programs and performances at the Kravis Center over the last 21 years. Mr. Leonard knows what good music does to the soul. So he uses his talent as a saxophonist to benefit his church and community. This brother works with various community organizations, groups and churches, and tries to inspire young people to always give their best to God. The West Palm Beach Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. sponsored the event at the Hilton Palm Beach Airport Hotel. According to the program, the event was to give Delta Chapter an opportunity to showcase their “Unsung Heroes of the Palm Beaches” for their exemplary community
involvement and award scholarships to nine deserving high school students. College accessibility and affordability remains a challenge for local students and their families. With the loyal support of our community organizations, such as Eta Phi Beta Sorority, our young people can continue to receive educational opportunities. Let’s face it, tuition and fees at public fouryear colleges have increased at an average annual rate of 6 percent beyond inflation in the past 10 years. And many families are forced to decide whether to keep the roof over their heads or send their child to college or university. As the school year comes to a close and these nine deserving students head off to greener pastures, waiting for that opportunity will be nine other students – could be another inventor, a future president of the United States or an educator. You can ensure a deserving student’s dream becomes a reality. Your tax-deductible gift to the Eta Phi Beta Scholarship Fund can make a world of difference. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Seek Help for You’ll Always Need it! Once I heard a true story about a man, giving a public talk during which he repeatedly bragged about being a self-taught man. At the conclusion, someone in the audience got up and addressed the speaker, saying: “Sir, next time would you consider using some help?” Indeed, all persons need help of some kind, even in areas where they may feel overly confident. Humans occupy their places in society where they can contribute of what they know and have, but also receive the benefits others can offer. Sadly, human pride often prevents people from achieving much more, with the help of others, than they would by going alone. The so-called “lone ranger” is often a loser
from the word go! Those who think they know it all, and avoid seeking any help, move through life only to manifest their ignorance and quite often their stupidity as well. As people look at things from varied perspectives, from different angles, from personal experience, and aided by deeper reflection, they can help another achieve much more than one would without their assistance. No individual is omni-competent in any area. All can gain from insights, suggestions, and even from a better way of doing certain things differently, while ensuring the best possible results. As it has been wisely stated, “the greatest
ability is dependability.” No one is ever diminished by seeking help from another. It is no sign of weakness to ask questions whose answers may lead one to genuine accomplishment, even victory! If it is true that “practice makes perfect,” remember that even after much practice you can still receive positive suggestions for further improvement, and concrete aid on how to reach your goal! Besides, failure is never final; it is simply an indication that you have not yet succeeded to the level you desire, or on the basis of the expectations and judgments of others. One significant thought I carried in my pocket for several years, continues to vibrate in my heart and mind: “I would rather
attempt to do something great and fail, than attempt to do nothing and succeed!” The trouble is that many who presume to be self-sufficient keep on failing even without knowing it, simply because they don’t consult with others, nor go after help which is abundantly available. There is a better and a best way to do anything, to achieve any purpose, to reach any destination, to accomplish any significant feat. Quite often, however, that may not be what you have initially devised but, rather, what you may learn from another. Be humble to acknowledge that and move on to real triumph!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

‘Skinny Joey’ Merlino, Former Reputed Boss of Philly Mob, Now a Free Man
By CRA News Service
After spending a little more than four months behind bars, the once reputed boss of Philadelphia’s mob became a free man again. Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, the reputed head of Philadelphia’s La Cosa Nostra in the 1990s, served four additional months for failing to report a meeting with a former co-defendant at a Boca Raton cigar bar. Circuit Judge Thomas Vanaskie signed an order Thursday releasing Merlino from a federal corrections facility in Miami. “He’s out. He’s a free man, Merlino’s attorney Edwin Jacobs told Philadelphia’s Daily News. Earlier, Merlino denied the meeting that landed him back behind bars.
“I never had dinner with mobster John “Johnny Chang” Ciancaglini. I bumped into him,” said Merlino, appearing fit and tan on a return trip to Philadelphia. “I didn’t report it. ... It just slipped my mind.” At the time, Merlino was prohibited from associating with Ciancaglini because he was finishing up his probation on the racketeering conviction that had kept him in prison for about 12 years. Jacobs had argued that the feds hadn’t properly notified Merlino of the violation. A split appeals court sided with Jacobs today, but it has not yet issued its opinion with the rationale behind the decision. Merlino, now 53, was believed to have been living in a halfway house or on house arrest in Boca Raton since 2011, when he left prison after more than a decade from a Philadelphia racketeering conviction. He would have been cut loose early next month, even if the appeal was unsuccessful. Jacobs declined to say what Merlino’s living arrangements had been prior to the ruling. His lawyer maintains that Merlino plans to work as a maitre d’ at a new Boca Raton restaurant that will bear his name. This report was supplemented with information from the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Enquirer and NBC10 Philadelphia.

Galaxy E3 Elementary Becomes First School in Florida to Earn LEED Platinum Status
By School District’s Public Affairs
Galaxy E3 Elementary School can now add Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification to its list of accolades for its “green” campus – a first for a Florida public or private school. Earning LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council – the highest certification available – is a significant achievement for Galaxy E3, which has worked to earn a reputation as an environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art school with a curriculum focused on energy, environment and engineering. Galaxy E3 opened in August 2013, replacing the 53-year-old school that had been on the site. “As principal of Galaxy E3 Elementary School, you can see the pride in all the students, teachers and community members who always knew Galaxy E3 was one-ofa-kind,” Principal Edmund Capitano said. “The LEED Platinum designation is an amazing achievement that places Galaxy E3 in the upper echelon of being an energy efficient, eco-friendly school center that will make a lasting impact in conservation and sustainability.” To earn LEED Platinum certification, a project must earn 80 or more points from the council’s rating system; Galaxy E3 earned 81 possible points. Galaxy E3 was designed by Zyscovich Architects of Miami and built by Pirtle Construction of Davie. To earn LEED Platinum certification, the team had to incorporate environmentally friendly practices and standards at the school, as well as implement innovative programs to help control costs. The 109,000 square-foot campus features solar power, preferred parking for electric cars, a four-acre natural habitat in conjunction with the City of Boynton Beach, and a two-story Wonderment Center with interactive exhibits that reinforce the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math focus. “From the beginning, we realized there was a unique opportunity for us to take this school project to a new level of performance by blending two missions—academic achievement in math and science and environmental sustainability,” said Jose
www.bocaratontribune.com
Murguido, corporate vice president for Zyscovich Architects. “We were gratified that the School District of Palm Beach County and the City of Boynton Beach were with us on the challenge. Galaxy E3 is and will always be a truly amazing school.” Said Gary Pirtle, vice president at Pirtle Construction, said Galaxy Elementary was built and designed to provide world class education framework around Energy, Environment and Engineering. “We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the School District of Palm Beach County and the many team members to construct this unique school,” he said. “Most rewarding for us is that Galaxy Elementary is a groundbreaking 21st century educational platform to enhance the educational experience for the children.” Environmentally conscious construction is now the district’s policy; new construction projects in the district must follow stricter environmental requirements required for LEED certification. There are currently nine district-operated schools with LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and one other certified by the Florida Green Building Coalition. LEED certification is pending at four other schools. Pine Jog Elementary School in West Palm Beach was the district’s first LEED-certified school, earning Gold certification in 2009. After that process, “when we saw how innovative and how comprehensive that certification was, it was almost a paradigm shift,” said Paul Strauss, the district’s director of Environmental & Conservation Services. “This planning process is so much more comprehensive than regular construction,” Strauss said. “This is just a new way of looking at construction in general. It forced us to look at a lot of really new, emerging technology for energy use.” The benefits of the extra efforts are the energy savings – LEED schools use approximately 35 percent less energy than other district schools. Learn more about the district’s LEED and Green Building projects on the Environmental & Conservation Services section of www.palmbeachschools. org.

The Downside Of ‘Musical Chairs’ Seth Godin, a noted author, entrepreneur, marketer and speaker, made a reference to the children’s game, “musical chairs,” in his blog recently. His writing brought back memories of the many times I participated in this activity as a boy. If you are not familiar with musical chairs, it is a children’s game where you walk around a group of chairs as music plays. When the music stops, everyone grabs a chair and sits. The catch is there is always one less chair than there are players. The person that ends up without a chair is eliminated from the game. The most practical lesson I learned while playing musical chairs is that if you do not want to always be scrambling for the last chair, it would be good if you could bring your own. At least that is what we should be doing in the workplace. By “bringing your own chair,” I mean determining to be creative, finding your own voice, and doing your own thing – identifying and pursuing what you are best at doing, and feel most enthused and even passionate about doing. Fighting for a chair seems like fun when you are 10 years old, but not so much when you are 50. I know too many people who have spent too many years scrambling for a decreasing number of chairs. In many industries we have seen this with downsizing, as companies economize by decreasing staff. Even for entrepreneurs the “musical chairs syndrome” might be felt as changes in the market and technology turn oncethriving businesses into struggling enterprises barely clinging to survival. So how can we go about “bringing our own chair,” when places and opportunities for employment are declining? For me, I always found the demand for someone with pho-
tographic expertise. As years have passed, I have also developed skills in restoring old photographs, transforming aging, faded photos into fresh, revitalized images from the past. I have had similar experiences in music, my other passion. These have been my “chairs.” The question to ask yourself is, “What is my chair?” What are the distinctive skills, gifts and experiences you possess that separate you from others where you work – or could enable you to carve a new career niche of your own? I believe the Bible offers some relevant principles we should consider: We are unique, both professionally and personally. Even at companies where many of the same types of people are employed, everyone comes with a unique background, personality, interests, talents and life experiences. We must consider how to leverage those God-given qualities either to make us valued staff members, or how we can use them to do something on our own that we would give us much joy and fulfillment. “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” (Psalm 139:13-14). We have been specially prepared for the work we do. Have you ever wondered why you have a natural bent toward some kinds of work – and not toward others? The Bible said this is due in part to God’s intentions for each of us individually. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Designing your retirement: the new reality At Wells Fargo Advisors, we can help you explore ways to support your new plans and model how certain changes could affect your future income. If starting a new business, for example, was part of your retirement plans, you’ll want to work with your Financial Advisor to make sure the assumptions you made are in line with the financial reality. Special circumstances are not the only reason to review your retirement finances. The regular checkups with your Financial Advisor that were part of your working years should continue during retirement — and may even be more important. You’ll also want to catch and manage any divergences from your retirement strategy that you might not otherwise have noticed, particularly in expenses and investments Conversely, you may discover you have budgeted more than you are actually spending, which means you’re holding more cash than you intended. At a checkup, your Financial Advisor can review your discretionary income allotment and portfolio allocations with you. You may decide to reduce the amount you’re drawing from your portfolio,
or take advantage of the opportunity to boost your retirement lifestyle. Your Financial Advisor will also ask about any life events that may affect your finances. That new granddaughter may prompt not only changes to your estate plans but also an increase in your travel budget if her parents reside elsewhere — or you may choose to purchase a home near the newly expanded family. All these decisions should be made in the context of your larger retirement goals, but they may also involve practicalities that your Financial Advisor can help you think through. How often is ‘regularly’? Some retirees plan a checkup each November before they take required minimum distributions from their IRAs and 401(k) s. Others choose an annual meeting during the first quarter of the year, before tax deadlines. No matter when you choose, you can always conduct an additional checkup whenever a change occurs in your life. Talking with your Financial Advisor regularly can keep you confident about your financial reality — whatever surprises retirement has in store

Local Nonprofits Stand to Benefit From The Great Give Fundraiser By CRA News Service
Several local non-profit organizations are gearing up for the ‘Great Give’ campaign, a 24-hour online giving event designed to raise as much money as possible for 437 local charities in a single day. Led by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, the United Way of Palm Beach County and the United Way of Martin County, the event will be from 5 p.m. on May 5 to 5 p.m. May 6. Among the local organizations are the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers in Boca Raton, the Caridad Center in Boynton Beach and the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach. “This community-wide event will celebrate the spirit of giving and the collective effort it takes to strengthen our community while raising critical funds for local nonprofits,” according to a posting on the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers website. “Your donation will go a long way in helping us make a difference through education for economically challenged children and families to build a positive future in our community,” the posting continued. “Plus, gifts made that day will receive a portion of bonus funds - making your dollar go even further than it would on any other day.” This year, the Spady Museum is doubling its fundraising goal to $10,000. The minimum gift is only $10 and with each donation, the Spady Museum will earn matching dollars and chances to win bonus prizes. “We invite the community to tell everyone they know about this great opportunity to make a tax deductible gift of $10 or more to support the museum,” according to a news release from the museum. ”Each
donation ensures that the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum continues to meet its mission by offering quality programs that enrich lives through the preservation and sharing of our cultural heritage.” Last year’s event raised $2.2 million, prompting the host partners to set the 2015 fundraising goal at $3 million. “We didn’t know what to expect last year and the community stepped up in a big way,” said Laurie George, CEO of the United Way of Palm Beach County. “This year, we are confident that we can make an even greater impact. Anyone can be a philanthropist during the Great Give by donating to their favorite charities. Even $10 can make a difference.” Officials for the Caridad Center said they benefitted big from last year’s event and hope to raise even more this year to help in their expansion efforts. “The Great Give was a big success for Caridad Center last year, providing funding that enabled our volunteer doctors and dentists to give additional medical and dental care to the working poor and recently uninsured,” CEO Laura Kallus said. Every local gift made during the 24-hour period will be multiplied by additional dollars from a $500,000 bonus pool raised by the Community Foundation. The bonus funds will be distributed to all participating nonprofits based on the percentage of the total they raise on that day. “The bonus pool is an important component of our giving day,” said Brad Hurlburt, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “The more money a nonprofit raises, the more bonus funds they will receive. It’s a great leveraging tool.”
Boca Restrict Electronic Cigarette Use
Add Boca Raton to the number of cities that are now restricting electronic cigarette use throughout the city. In February, then-Deputy Mayor Constance Scott proposed an ordinance that would have instituted harsh penalties of up to 60 days in jail for offenders to smoking ecigarettes in places where prohibited. At that time, Council members chose to postpone voting on the ordinance as they still needed to "do their homework". The new ordinance that was passed in the City of Boca Raton on Tuesday, April 28

Have You Hugged Your Robot Today?
If robots were to reach the technological level that made them seem human, could a mortal human being fall in love with one? That’s the basic quandary of “Ex Machina,” a stylish science-fiction movie written and directed by Alex Garland (“28 Days After,” “Sunshine”). The not-so-secret weapon of this intriguing movie is 26-year-old Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, who plays an artificial intelligence (AI) robot named Ava. Ms. Vikander is breathtakingly beautiful even when suited up as a robot with bald skullcap, visible wires, electrodes and cathodes winking and bleeping away. My prediction is that this movie will propel Alicia Vikander to stardom as “Gone Girl” did for Rosamund Pike. There are only three lead roles and one support player in this far-out fable, set in some high-security lair in a gorgeous, mountainous region unnamed. In addition to Vikander’s Ava there is Nathan (Oscar Isaac), the secretive and enigmatic creator of Ava and fabulously wealthy owner of the posh pad
does not threaten jail time to the offender, however it does "recommend" a fine of up to $500 for those who are found vaping inside public places where it is now prohibited. The ordinance does not however, prohibit e-cigarette use in private residences, standalone bars, retail tobacco or e-cigarette shops. In fact, it does not prohibit e-cigarettes anywhere within Boca Raton where tobacco smoking is permitted. Based on provisions of the Florida Indoor Clean Air Act, local laws are in lieu of further direction from the Florida Legislature, is has at this time failed to act on statewide vaping regulation in public places. After the ordinance with the new updates passed 4-1, Councilmember Scott Singer spoke to The Sun-Sentinel about the importance of this ordinance, "This current ordinance strikers the right balance and makes it clear that citizens are safe from excessive penalty." www.bocaratontribune.com
where she lives. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is a young tech wizard and employee of Bluebook, “the world’s most popular Internet search engine” created by Nathan at age 13. Caleb, a 26-year-old coder, entered a competition to win a week at Nathan’s private resort. He won, and he was helicoptered in under great secrecy to Nathan’s high-tech Land of Oz. Once ensconced in his windowless room in the ultra-high security facility, Caleb is told by Nathan he is to interact with Ava while being observed. Interact Caleb does, and so does Ava. Conveniently, Nathan’s getaway is subject to intermittent power outages when the allseeing security cameras go dark and mute. During one of these outages Ava warns Caleb not to trust Nathan. To spice things up, Nathan has a pretty Asian housekeeper and helper named Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno), who may be more than just a helpmate. This is apparent when Caleb witnesses Nathan in an erotic dance with Kyoko. Oh, and Nathan casually mentions Ava is equipped to fulfil a man sexually, and will feel good vibes in return. “Ex Machina” is a big step beyond 2013’s “Her,” in which Joaquin Phoenix fell in love with the seduction voice of Scarlett Johansson, playing a computer that fulfilled his every desire. With this movie we get the visuals as well as the audios. With computer technology advancing as fast as it is, “Ex Machina” may not be all that far-fetched. Rating: 1/2

Longtime Commander of Boca High's JROTC Bids Farewell BOCA RATON - Lieutenant Commander Kenneth “Ken” Bingham, who led Boca Raton High School’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps to seven state titles and two national championships, will soon bid farewell to the program after 21 years. Bingham, who will retire in the fall, announced at the beginning of the 2015 school year that this would be his last as the school’s naval science instructor. He took his ceremonial “crossing the bridge” at the program’s Change of Command ceremony on April 29. In 2011, Bingham’s squad won the school’s first ever national title, and last month, he won his second. “Winning a national championship, what a way to go out,” he said at last week’s Change of Command ceremony. “Not in my wildest dreams.” The former Navy pilot and flight instructor retired after a 22-year naval career and almost immediately launched a new careerbuilding America’s future. In 1994, he helped establish the Boca Raton Community High School NJROTC program with 39 cadets after working as a chaperone for his niece’s NJROTC in Pasco County. Upon his return, he learned that the Navy was considering starting a ROTC unit at Boca Raton High and he applied. Today, the program is 180 cadets strong –
nearly 800 to date - and has earned national acclaim. The more than 150 trophies, ribbons, and awards are a testament to the hard work of his students and Bingham’s dedication to young Americans every day. Bingham’s classroom is not the traditional with the average high school students. His students come to him from all walks of life. Some arrive with 4.0 grade point averages determined to pursue a military career. And there are those who reluctantly show up or were sent to the program as a last resort. Regardless of their situation, Bingham gives them his best effort and the results are proof. Bingham credits his father, a former police officer, for the values and principles, which are the cornerstone of his success. “My father believed in living an honest and accomplished life,” Bingham said in a 2014 interview. “He instilled in us knowledge, skills, and integrity believes those attributes gave him the opportunity to accomplish many things in my life.” Because of those experiences, he wanted to “pay it forward” to today’s youth. His goals are best expressed in the mission statement of his NJROTC unit: To instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

Boca Raton FC Looks to Break Its Own Record
After breaking the APSL record for fans in a game, Boca Raton Football Club is
looking to do it again on May 15th versus Miami Dade FC at The Shipyard. 519 fans packed The Shipyard to create an intimidating atmosphere for the opposing team and Boca Raton FC wants to make that the norm in Boca Raton. “The crowd was amazing,” said Gabe Taboada. “We fed off their energy so much, and having those 500-plus people cheering us on for our very first game was something special.” Boca Raton’s crowd of 519, was the second
largest for a fourth division match in South Florida, which might not be much, but when you consider Boca Raton FC is a brand new club in its first season of operation, it’s a huge feat in of itself. “That crowd is something I’ll never forget,” says Braxton Fuster, the author of the firstever Boca Raton FC goal. “When I scored the goal and the crowd just got up and cheered and screamed, that was something I’ll never forget.” “We want to pack the shipyard next game,”
says majority owner, Douglas Heizer. “The crowd for our first game was big, but now there’s nowhere to go but up from that.” #PackTheYard will be the official marketing campaign Boca Raton FC will use for its upcoming match on May 15. Boca Raton FC Defeats South Florida FC 4-1 in Inaugural APSL Game In their first match in the American Premiers Soccer League, Boca Raton Football Club defeated South Florida Football Club 4-1 in front of an APSL-record 516 fans at The Shipyard (Boca Raton HS Stadium). After going down 1-0 in the first half, Boca Raton FC regrouped in the second half, and with 15 minutes remaining in the game scored four unanswered goals to take the 4-1 victory. Braxton Fuster scored the first goal in Boca Raton FC History with 14 minutes left in
the match after a Stefano Bontempo header found his feet. From there, not ever 30 seconds later, former Lynn University standout, Gabe Taboada raced down the field and scored Boca Raton’s game-winner. “We talked about this at the half,” said Taboada after the game. “We needed that one goal and from there we knew we had what it took to win the game.” Boca Raton High School’s All-Time Goalscorer, Colby Burdette also scored, giving
Boca Raton FC the 3-1 lead, and Hassani Sinclair gave Boca it’s fourth goal in stoppage time to seal the 4-1 victory. “The crowd tonight was fantastic,” said head coach Marcelo Castillo. “They were loud from start to finish and we fed off their energy.” Boca Raton’s 516 fans was an APSL record this season. Boca Raton FC now has a bye week before playing Miami Dade FC at The Shipyard on May 15, at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased
