West Boca Vanguard Gets London Invitation

Dozens of musicians from West Boca Raton High School will get the experience of a lifetime next school year as the band travels to England to play in the London New Year’s Eve parade and gala concert series for New Year’s 2016. The band, known as The Vanguard, will be the first ever from Palm Beach County invited to play in the London celebration and one of only about 12 bands from the United States invited, said West Boca Raton High School band director Larry Shane. “It will be an amazing opportunity for the students to play in front of thousands of people and show off their hard work and talent,” Shane said. The parade will also be broadcast on television internationally and available for broad-

Motorists along Interstate 95 can expect nightly traffic disruptions next week as construction workers build the new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard. Beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, May 18, traffic will be rerouted to newly paved outside lanes just north and south of the Spanish River Boulevard overpass. The shift will continue each night through Thursday, May 21. The $68 million project, which includes 13 new and refurbished bridges and additional lanes on I-95 will take longer to be completed than expected, the Florida Department of Transportation said. The DOT asked the contractor to redesign a section of the interstate between Glades

and Yamato roads to make room for future express toll lanes, which extended the project by seven months, officials said. The interchange was scheduled to be completed in January 2017. The southbound I-95 entrance ramp from eastbound Yamato Road has been closed some nights as a new ramp is being built. And lane closures are occurring at night throughout May on I-95 between Glades Road and Congress Avenue. When completed, the interchange will take traffic directly from the interstate to Florida Atlantic University, alleviating the heavy traffic at Glades Road that is caused by the university.

sociation, which oversees high school band competitions in the state, had connections with the organizers of the London parade and when those organizers came looking for American bands West Boca Raton High was specifically recommended, Shane said. The band tries to take a major trip to perform every other year to give the students the exposure to playing in real venues in front of large numbers of fans. Last year the school’s band traveled to New Orleans to play on riverboat cruises, Shane said. In addition to playing in the London parade, the band will get to perform in one of London’s Royal Concert Halls. For Shane, a lifelong Beatles fan, the trip will also be an opportunity for he and his students to connect with the music of his youth as they will get to visit the studio and street crossing that were the site of the legendary “Abbey Road” album in 1969. Accompanied by Jonathan Whaley, the event’s Director of International Participation, Duncan Sandys, the Lord Mayor of

Westminster, made the formal invitation to the 130-member marching band on Monday, May 11 at the High School’s auditorium where the band greeted them. The trip will cost The Vanguard approximately $300,000 to pay for airfare, and their six-day stay in London. They have an online fundraising page that has already successfully raised over $1,000. The band is also planning some car washes to help raise the money, and the school is seeking corporate sponsors as well. During Monday’s ceremony, Sandys read a famed citation that recognized the band’s “Outstanding performance abilities,” and walked the students through the 2.2-mile route they’ll march on Jan. 1, 2016. The route includes some of London’s biggest landmarks like Trafalgar Square and Big Ben. ‘Skinny Joey’ Merlino, Former Reputed Boss of Philly Mob, Now a Free Man

By CRA News Service

After spending a little more than four months behind bars, the once reputed boss of Philadelphia’s mob became a free man again. Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, the reputed head of Philadelphia’s La Cosa Nostra in the 1990s, served four additional months for failing to report a meeting with a former co-defendant at a Boca Raton cigar bar. Circuit Judge Thomas Vanaskie signed an order Thursday releasing Merlino from a federal corrections facility in Miami. “He’s out. He’s a free man, Merlino’s attorney Edwin Jacobs told Philadelphia’s Daily News. Earlier, Merlino denied the meeting that

www.bocaratontribune.com

landed him back behind bars. “I never had dinner with mobster John “Johnny Chang” Ciancaglini. I bumped into him,” said Merlino, appearing fit and tan on a return trip to Philadelphia. “I didn’t report it. ... It just slipped my mind.” At the time, Merlino was prohibited from associating with Ciancaglini because he was finishing up his probation on the racketeering conviction that had kept him in prison for about 12 years. Jacobs had argued that the feds hadn’t properly notified Merlino of the violation. A split appeals court sided with Jacobs today, but it has not yet issued its opinion with the rationale behind the decision. Merlino, now 53, was believed to have been living in a halfway house or on house arrest in Boca Raton since 2011, when he left prison after more than a decade from a Philadelphia racketeering conviction. He would have been cut loose early next month, even if the appeal was unsuccessful. Jacobs declined to say what Merlino’s living arrangements had been prior to the ruling. His lawyer maintains that Merlino plans to work as a maitre d’ at a new Boca Raton restaurant that will bear his name. This report was supplemented with information from the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Enquirer and NBC10 Philadelphia.

28 Years of Preparation Pays Off As I prepared to leave the reception on the 6th floor at the Palm Beach County Governmental Center on Monday, I hugged Verdenia Baker and whispered, “Congratulations my Sister” in her ear. One may think that was a rather presumptuous prediction that she would be tapped to succeed her boss as the county’s next administrator when he retires in August. But after covering politics and government in this county for close to 30 years, I would want to think these elected officials were forward thinking to consider her hard work over the past 28 years and recognize she has prepared herself for this next chapter. I am not naive to know that we are still in the South and the United States of America, where many still would deprive you of that well-earned opportunity to advance in your career because of the pigmentation of your skin. I, like many people of color, am joyed knowing that finally, at least two people of color are given the opportunity to lead three top institutions in Palm Beach County. The third is already being led by a black man. Exactly one month ago, Ava L. Parker was

selected as Palm Beach State College’s fifth president, becoming the first female and black woman to lead the institution in its 82-year history. She replaced Dennis Gallon, who was at the helm for the past 18 years. And two days later, the school district board members picked Robert Avossa, 43, currently the superintendent of Fulton County Schools in metro Atlanta, to be the next superintendent. Avosa is Hispanic and began his career in Orange County. I recall, as a newspaper reporter for one of the local large dailies, wondering if I would one day see someone of color sitting in the county administrator’s seat on the dais, or even as the superintendent of schools. I am reminded of Bill Wilkins and Tony Smith, both highly qualified black men, who served as the County’s second in command but would never – not under the commission we had during the late 1980s – be given the nod to be the top cheese. (I once got chastised after saying that so let me clarify: the majority of the commissioners then were not as liberal and ready to “gamble on” a person of color to lead this county).

Simply put, I never envisioned either, given the mindset of some of the decision makers then. Nonetheless, kudos to Ms. Baker and to the commissioners for having the fortitude to choose one of their own after a yearlong search that attracted more than 80 applicants from across the country. She has prepared herself well, having served as a budget analyst to impact fee coordinator and division director of the budget and finance department during her what, some sarcastically equated to a “28-year paid internship.” She has been the deputy county administrator since and was directly involved with virtually every major project and issue confronting the County during this period. Yet, despite glowing performance reviews and the recommendation of her boss, there were many, including county commissioners, who were not prepared to give her a crack at the job. In the end, Mayor Shelley Vana, commissioners Mary Lou Berger, Priscilla Taylor and Paulette Burdick, who ranked her as their first choice, propelled her to become the winner. She was given the opportunity

she deserved, not special consideration. Ms. Baker has shown she has a deep knowledge of the County’s operations, its personnel and its culture. She communicates effectively with diverse members of the community, skillfully handles controversial issues, effectively directs her staff, and makes correct decisions that withstand public scrutiny and the test of time. Let’s not forget, she also has earned the respect and trust of her co-workers, peers and elected officials. Now that she is in the big chair, Ms. Baker has until August to enjoy the honeymoon. Then she will need to improve the mass transit system, shake up the parks department and recruit sustainable business that will provide jobs to the county. Time will tell. I guess I can now say by prematurely giving Ms. Baker that congratulatory hug, I am becoming cautiously optimistic that people of color are beginning to be judged on the content of their character and skills and not by the color of their skin.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Don’t Miss Your Opportunities! A great tragedy affecting large numbers of the human population, pertains to missed opportunities in life. Many live without a compass, never consult a map, and operate from the wrong script. These are people who simply let life happen to them instead of discovering and following the plan and design the Creator had pre-ordained for maximum fulfilment in their earthly trajectory. Many persons are easily satisfied with a mediocre life instead of the kind of existence available if they earnestly seek to know, and fall in line with its purposes for them. Very recently I was reflecting on these issues when my eyes fell on a phrase from Oswald Chambers which somewhat sums it all up. He wrote: “Many of us refuse to

grow where we are put, consequently we take root nowhere.” A most meaningful challenge for all to heed is, “Bloom where you are planted!” Allow the storms which may surround you, and the winds of change which may confuse you, to provide new incentives to remain on course and fearlessly to keep on keeping on! Do not wait for conditions to improve before you attempt something great. Even in the midst of any other trouble, in the face of giant obstacles, in frail health or with limited resources, you can still take a positive step forward in the execution of any project. Dr. Howard G. Hendricks offered a meaningful reminder when he wrote: “We are all faced with a series of opportunities, bril-

liantly disguised as unsolvable problems.” Indeed, some people thrive on challenges and even welcome impossibilities which they creatively transform into significant, new realities! Others, sadly, become paralysed the moment things do not go their way; they prefer to seek a safe refuge elsewhere and dismiss all previous attempts in pursuing their objectives. But as anyone can easily recognize, the dictionary is the only place where “success” comes before “work.” Only through persistence, sweat and tears, may one’s goals be reached, and often transcended! Sometimes you may need to take detours along the way and even experience unpleasant hardships, but as long as it is the path you to follow, such is the right road where

you need to remain! After all, for every problem there is a solution; some take longer than others but all can be resolved! As I’ve written before, no door of hope, no gate of opportunity, will ever be shut to you if, with endurance and determination, you seek to enter it. Along with the opportunities God grants us all, He also provides His infinite resources for real triumph! Remember, big opportunities start quite small before they reach the level ultimately intended for them. Don’t miss any which may seek entrance at the doors of your heart and of your mind, even when you least expect it. Capture the moment, seize the opportunity, and run away with it into fulfilment!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

A New Bilingual School For Boca Raton

The buzz began a couple of weeks ago. A new bilingual (private) elementary school is opening in the Palm Beach County region? “Yes, that’s correct” confirms founder and director, Celine Von May. It’s about time too. For a region as international, soughtafter and highly-educated as ours, to not host a “Lycée Francais” seems shocking. After all, the Broward and Dade areas each have one. Beyond that, there are over fifty such international schools across the United States. Many are found in and around cosmopolitan centers, but an equal amount of these schools thrive in suburbs in States such as Arizona, Oregon, Rhode Island and Minnesota. The French-American International School of Boca Raton opens its doors for the next coming school year, August 24th 2015. “We are inviting the public to our Open House May 14th, 4pm-7pm” adds Celine Von May. Children from the Kindergarten through 3rd grade may apply as of now, with no French experience required. According to the director, this is a special circumstance, as many French Lycées do not accept older children without prior

knowledge of French. “We are making this exception because our classes will be small and we will have the support available along with the full immersion, for the older kids to adapt and learn French quickly” says Von May. The new school has received so many calls, they are considering opening the 4th grade for the first year as well. Additional grades will be added every year thereafter to accommodate the oldest students of the school. “Our hope is to go up through high school, known as “Lycée”, so that our students can earn a European Baccalaureate in addition to their High School diploma. The new school’s academic program is rigorous and challenging. The French program adheres to the national curriculum of France, while the English portion of the courses are designed to meet the requirements of the American common core. The French-American International School is, like most private schools, a non-profit organisation run by its board of directors. The school is registered with the State and it’s enrollment is recognized by the educational authorities. “We wanted to make sure that, in addition to learning a second language fluently, our students’ American education continues full steam ahead AND is recognized by the various Florida statutes” says Von May. “More than half the world’s population speaks more than one language. It all started because I wanted this bilingual education for my daughter and it was nowhere to be found here. The students of our school will gain a tremendous advantage for their future. Being bilingual opens doors both nationally and globally” she concludes. For more information visit www.frenchamericanschoolbocaraton.org

Seminar Planned to Address Deaths of Black Men In Police Custody By CRA News Service

In the wake of a string of deaths of young black men in police custody around the country, a local organization is hosting a seminar to address solutions to the problem. The 2nd Annual Black on Black Crime Solutions Panel will be Saturday, May 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale. The free event will feature a panel discussion. “With the number of deaths over the last 12 months, it is timely and relevant for us to discuss this topic,” said Kevin Dorival, mentor, author and CEO of “The Courage To Believe International, the host nonprofit. A number of black men have died under questionable circumstances during police encounters in recent months. Last year, weeks of protests followed the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white officer in Ferguson, Missouri, and the chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York City.

Last month, about 2,000 people marched through downtown Baltimore after a 25-year-old Baltimore man died while being taken into police custody and sustaining a mysterious spinal injury. The panelists also will tackle the issue of crime prevention, in particular youth crime. “We hope to show our teens and young adults how to make successful life decisions in order to avoid joining the school to prison pipeline club, which is a growing epidemic in this country,” said Dorival, who spoke on the topic at the annual Preventing Crime in the Black Community Conference in Jacksonville last year. Among the panelists are the Rev. Dr. O’Neal Dozier, of Worldwide Christian Center Church, Pompano Beach; attorney Frantz McLawrence; Connie Moss, president of Black Motivated Women Network; international educator and author A.K. Tosu, Ph.D; and James DePelisi, CEO/ President, Broward County Crime Commission. For more information, visit www.TheCourageToBelieve.com or call 954-263-8223.

Mentoring Fully Trained ‘Apprentices’ Many vocational trades, including plumbers, carpenters, electricians and other skilled crafts, over the years have utilized apprentice programs to train the next generation of workers entering their particular vocation. The novice worker comes alongside a veteran in the profession, learning what to do and how it should be done, both through observation and hands-on practice. In the business and professional world, a similar strategy is often implemented, although the term “apprentice” is rarely used. Instead, this approach for training sometimes takes shape in the form of a mentorship or internship. Mentoring might take a variety of forms, and may be carried out as part of a formalized program that is part of each person’s job description, or a more informal, relationally oriented process. Either way, a more seasoned executive or staff member serving as a mentor can be of great benefit in helping a newer employee become established with the company. The question sometimes arises, “What is our goal in mentoring?” It is valid to ask this. In fact, it is an important consideration if the activity of mentoring is to have the desired outcome. The purpose might not only be to prepare and equip the individuals for specific roles or responsibilities, but also to help them in understanding and embracing the company culture and values. In the corporate world, multi-generational family businesses are rare, especially beyond the second generation, and one reason is the failure to pass along values and practices that made a company successful at its start. People being mentored also can observe company veterans, seeing how they handle certain situations, particularly under stress.

As a wise person once said, some things are more easily caught than taught. Finding a good, consistent role model to mentor can go a long way in developing a good employee. Whenever possible, allowing a new or prospective employee the opportunity to shadow an experienced worker can be an effective way to train and equip your next round of leaders. Without these opportunities, many young people will make costly mistakes and have greater likelihood of failure. In this mentoring/apprenticeship process, one important consideration must remain foremost: The person serving as mentor must be someone worthy to teach and model. It is said, “Practice makes perfect,” but that is untrue if you practice imperfectly. A mentor that does substandard work, or exhibits unacceptable values or ethics, cannot train newer staff people how to perform at a higher, more desirable level. As Jesus said in Luke 6:40, “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” In leading His own followers, Jesus demonstrated that people cannot teach – or mentor – above the standard by which they themselves are working and living. Or as Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man (or woman) sharpens another.” For this reason, in training someone new in your profession, be intentional about assigning him or her to shadow one of your best people, someone in your organization that is highly valued. Hopefully, the newer person eventually will end up being like the mentor – another top contributor to your company.

Three Years? “The law is an ass” originates in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that “the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”. Picture this: The professional young lady after a few years realizes that her husband is a drunk. Well, no, not just a Saturday night, Sunday football afternoon drunk but an alcoholic; a person who would rather make love to a Bud Light than to her. Best of times and worst she finds herself pregnant, and decides to hold on a bit to see if their little girl would encourage husband to changes his ways. Surprise, surprise…it did not. A divorce ensued. The parties fought over child care issues. The wife sought and got temporary exclusive parenting rights and the husband had supervised visitation only because of his alcoholism and the Judge’s fear of the husband driving his car with the child a passenger. The final hearing in the divorce case was set to start in about a month. The Husband’s lawyer had withdrawn for lack of payment. Word came though the Husband’s camp that he had fallen, cracked his head and was in a coma. The trial was cancelled; the husband in limbo as was the wife. “When can I get divorce,” she asked. After a brief visit with our Trust and Estates partner to confirm what I already knew I had to tell her that if her husband remained in

a coma, or became mentally incompetent as the result of his fall she would have to wait for three years after he was officially found to be incompetent to get divorced. I concluded that if he were to become incompetent he would have a guardian who could negotiate a marital settlement agreement with her, but the marriage could not be ended for three years under a Florida statute. I also told her that while she could bring an Incompetency case to court herself she could not be the guardian because they were in a divorce case against one another. Money was thin all around and not the real issue in the divorce case. The woman had a job with a reasonable paycheck but could not afford to start another case in probate court. All told she appears to be between a rock and a hard place. It also appears that there should be a more flexible path for a person in her situation, albeit unusual, to be able to go ahead with her life. Her income disables her from getting assistance from the local Legal Aid office. Who knows what happens next. Michael H. Police Investigating Alleged Gang Rape of FAU Student By Fred Hamilton

Police are investigating an alleged rape of a Florida Atlantic University student at an off-campus party at an events center last month, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. The woman told police that she attended an after party called “Oil Spill” at the Wayne Barton Center, 269 NE 14th St., after a “step show” on campus on April 12. After having some drinks and getting separated from friends, the victim was “pulled up on stage behind the curtain by several males, who then raped her,” police said. The victim said she became separated from her friends about 2 a.m., and several men pulled her behind a curtain and raped her. She then went outside and found her friends who took her back to her dorm. Police met with her at Boca Raton Regional Hospital at 5 a.m. that morning. Investigators have since been “interviewing the victim’s friends, witnesses and party goers, checking for video and thoroughly investigating the crime,” police said in a statement. The incident occurred one month ago. Police, however released the information in a news release recently. A police spokeswoman said news about sexual batteries is not usually released to the public until an arrest is made or if there is a threat to public safety. The department wanted to be “thorough” before appealing to the public for help nearly a month after the incident. “She reported the crime that night,” Boca Raton Police spokeswoman Officer Sandra Boonenberg told the University Press. “We’re just releasing the information now.”

Boonenberg said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. “We just wanted to start the investigation and see where it led us before we put it out,” she told the New York Daily News. A FAU spokeswoman directed questions about the investigation to the police. “The safety of our students is and always will be our number one priority here at FAU,” spokeswoman Lisa Metcalf told the Daily News. “We are willing and ready to work with the Boca Police Department in any way they need us to.” Omega Psi Phi fraternity chapters hold Oil Spill parties as one of their traditions nationwide. The ‘all you can drink’ parties run off the concept that party attendees pay a fixed ticket price (typically $20), and drink the ‘Omega Oil’ until it runs out. At FAU, the fraternity capitalizes on their Oil Spill party once a year after the Annual Sunshine State Step Show on campus, according to a post online at sofloclubgo.com. “The Q-dogs offer free liquor all night, so they are able to charge 20 to 45 dollars for a ticket,” the post read. It is unclear whether the university’s Omega Psi Phi chapter hosted the April 12 event, which was dubbed as the “South Florida Spill.” A flier found on an online website, said the sixth annual “South Florida Spill” was hosted by an LLC under the name “Sadiddy Entertainment.” The event was scheduled to go from 10:30 p.m. on April 11 through 3:30 a.m., April 12. “Most parties that generate over 100 guest in Boca are hosted by the Fraternities and Sororities of FAU,” according to the post online at sofloclubgo.com.

Sofia and Reese Team For “Hot Pursuit

Laurel & Hardy. Abbott & Costello. Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance. Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon? Yes, Sophia and Reese are the latest cinematic comedy buddy team in “Hot Pursuit.” I feared this script by David Feeney (“New Girl”) and John Quaintance (“Ben & Kate”) would be formulaic and lame. I was sort of right, but “Hot Pursuit” gets by on the pure chemistry of two mismatched, very pretty women who seem to be having fun. Vergara and Witherspoon are both listed as producers of the Warner Brothers film, so they have a vested interest. On physical contrast alone they are a funny sight. Witherspoon, who claims to be 4-foot-11, is one of our tiniest, most white bread movie stars. Voluptuous, well-endowed Columbian-born Vergara seems giant alongside Witherspoon, and she exaggerates her Spanish accent and Latina mannerisms to play the polar opposite to by-the-books San Antonio cop Witherspoon. The story begins with a shootout that

claims the life of Danielle Riva’s (Sofia Vergara) drug-dealing husband. Newbie Officer Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) is assigned to escort Mrs. Riva to Dallas so she can testify against another drug dealer named Cortez (Joaquin Cosio). Mrs. Riva is a pampered princess who insists of travelling with a large suitcase full of fancy shoes. We also learn Cortez killed her brother; her only close relative in America. You could say there is bad blood. The guys are incidental. Most are bad (Matthew Del Negro’s Det. Hauser), but one is good (Robert Kazinsky’s decent ex-con, Randy). The rest is the girls doing silly pratfalls and mad chases, including a cool one with a bus full of senior citizens. What? You were expecting Eugene O’Neill? At the risk of sounding sexist I’ll take these beautiful babes over bumbling bros. any day. Rating: 1/2

Boca Restrict Electronic Cigarette Use

Add Boca Raton to the number of cities that are now restricting electronic cigarette use throughout the city. In February, then-Deputy Mayor Constance Scott proposed an ordinance that would have instituted harsh penalties of up to 60 days in jail for offenders to smoking ecigarettes in places where prohibited. At that time, Council members chose to postpone voting on the ordinance as they still needed to "do their homework". The new ordinance that was passed in the City of Boca Raton on Tuesday, April 28

does not threaten jail time to the offender, however it does "recommend" a fine of up to $500 for those who are found vaping inside public places where it is now prohibited. The ordinance does not however, prohibit e-cigarette use in private residences, standalone bars, retail tobacco or e-cigarette shops. In fact, it does not prohibit e-cigarettes anywhere within Boca Raton where tobacco smoking is permitted. Based on provisions of the Florida Indoor Clean Air Act, local laws are in lieu of further direction from the Florida Legislature, is has at this time failed to act on statewide vaping regulation in public places. After the ordinance with the new updates passed 4-1, Councilmember Scott Singer spoke to The Sun-Sentinel about the importance of this ordinance, "This current ordinance strikers the right balance and makes it clear that citizens are safe from excessive penalty." www.bocaratontribune.com

Rising Tides for Autistic Employment

By Sam Smith

With a towel thrown over his shoulder, a vacuum in hand and sweat dripping from his face, Tyler Leslie prepares to tackle his next car at Rising Tide Car Wash. Working at the Parkland car wash may seem like a breeze. But it is no comparison to a walk in the park. “It’s hot outside but we work really hard,” says Lelie, who enjoys checking out the cars between detailing them. Upon visiting Rising Tide, one might not immediately noticed that most of the employees have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. But upon paying close attention, what becomes evident is the joy and dedication the employees have for their jobs. In a job which is often undervalued by many, these workers take pride and together express a vibrant sense of camaraderie. John D’Eri and his family created Rising Tide Car Wash April 2013 to provide job opportunities to those previously marginalized in the workplace with autism. “We opened to employ those with Autism, that’s it,” said D’Eri whose son, Andrew, is on the spectrum and one of those employed by the company. “That’s the only reason we’re here.” In the past two years, Rising Tide Car Wash has continued to grow and now has 43 employees, 35 of whom are autistic. This makes the wash the largest retail employer of adults on the spectrum in the country. About 1 in 68 people has autism spectrum disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Autism is a disorder of many voices, but

for each unique individual diagnosed as “on the spectrum,” integration into the workforce can be challenging. Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder are general terms used to describe a range of developmental disabilities. These disabilities can be characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and behavioral challenges. Only 15 percent of those with autism have full-time jobs, according to research by the National Autistic Society. But here in South Florida, there is one company that has made it its mission to include these stories of diversity as an integral part of its business and its “secret sauce” to delivering a superior product. “It’s really amazing what they’re doing for a community that is often sidelined when it comes to job opportunities,” said Maria Hodge who has two nephews with ASD and frequents the wash. Rising Tide has made a name for itself nationally as it was featured on NBCs Nightly News with Brian Williams. But the mission of Rising Tide Car Wash is kept alive by an effort to provide the best product on the market and D’Eri holds his employees to high standards that deliver just that. “We project empowerment and we project a superior product due to the nature of our staff,” he said. “We don’t project a sub-level product and hope that people come to support a cause.” The incorporation of neurological diversity into the workplace has become more prevalent in recent years. Companies such as Freddie Mac and German computer software giant SAP both acknowledge that autism lends itself to special skills that can be used to increase productivity, especially in production oriented and process driven tasks. “The diversity can be harnessed in a positive way in many business environments” D’Eri said. “If other businesses think their environment can be structured and they feel that that structure can be taught, then they can have the benefit of an employee that embraces and thrives in a structured workplace.”

sports We're Back! No. 7 Women's Tennis Returns to NCAA Quarterfinals With Victory over No. 29 Queens

Surprise, Ariz.- Despite a 5 pm scheduled match time for Lynn University's seventhranked women's tennis team, the Blue & White finally took to the courts for its

first national championship appearance in three years, and 17th overall at approximately 9:30 pm local time. The Fighting Knights advanced to the second round at

the NCAA Division II National Championships with a 5-1 win over No. 29 Queens (N.Y.) late Wednesday night. Lynn improves to 20-4 overall and will face top-ranked Armstrong (30-0) at 1 pm. Fans can follow the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Lynn took a 1-0 lead when Rosalie Willig and Kim Przeszlowski defeated Sumeera Kamil and Angelika Sobiecka, 8-4. Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy trailed 2-5 at No. 3 doubles but rallied to win the next six games taking the match, 8-5, from Cami Abdaullah and Aylin Mehter. Alina Jane and Carolina Cuevas led 6-3 at the middle of the lineup but Jenna Plevako, and Andrea Samson took the match 9-7 to score Queens' first point. Lynn's 2-1 lead after doubles fueled the Fighting Knights with momentum. No. 28 Willig was the first to finish in singles defeating 32nd-ranked Plevako, 6-4, 6-3, to

give the Blue & White a 3-1 advantage in the match. "It is tough to play after waiting all day so we were all kind of tired," said Willig. "Kim and I won at No. 1 doubles which was good to set the tone of the match for our team. In singles we played really strong and I had a tough opponent but I am glad we won and we are looking forward to our next match tomorrow." Gledacheva won 6-4, 6-4, over Samson to put the Fighting Knights within one point of victory. Minutes later Cuevas sealed the deal at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kamil. The Fighting Knights reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 17th time in program history following Wednesday night's victory. Lynn's match vs. Armstrong is slated for 1 pm (MST) and live stats can be found here.

Strikers and Atlanta Silvebacks Play to 0-0 Draw at Lockhart Stadium

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Atlanta Silverbacks played to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium despite the Strikers controlling much of the action. The game was Fort Lauderdale’s first home match after consecutive games in Canada.

The Strikers (2-1-2) had the night’s best scoring chance in the 71st minute when Stefano Pinho’s header from close range hit the post before the Silverbacks defense scrambled to clear the ball for a corner kick. Fort Lauderdale controlled play throughout

the second half, but could not cash in on several opportunities. Manny Gonzalez tested goalkeeper Steward Ceus in the 59th minute with a powerful shot from distance. Ceus finished with four saves. “We were trying to break them down, but we couldn’t,” said Gonzalez. “It was a good effort from us. The team played well, it was just a matter of putting them in the goal.” The home side also had the initiative for the better part of the first half. Gonzalez was on target in the 24th minute. Dani Sánchez lofted shot from distance that forced Ceus to crash into the goalpost as the Atlanta keeper tipped the ball over the bar. Both clubs remain level on points with seven each after five games in the NASL Spring Season. Atlanta (1-4-0) remains unbeaten after playing to their fourth draw of the year.

The match outcome runs the Strikers unbeaten streak against Atlanta to six games (3-3-0) and stretches the all-time series record between the two sides to 5-6-5. Fort Lauderdale remains in third place in the NASL Spring Season standings. The Strikers utilized the same ten field players from last week’s 3-1 win in Ottawa. The only change in the starting lineup was the return of goalkeeper David Meves, who replaced the injured Joe Nasco. Meves made two saves and earned his first shutout of the season. Fort Lauderdale attempted 11 shots, while Atlanta had 8 tries. The Strikers also forced 10 corner kicks to the Silverbacks 4. The Strikers will have a bye week before hitting the road again for an in-state derby against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 16 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Borup Garners Baseball First Team All-SSC; Three Named Second Team

A total of 37 student-athletes were honored as 2015 All-Sunshine State Conference selections with Lynn University's baseball team collecting four accolades as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Outfielder John Borup earned first team recognition while designated hitter Kyle Carter and starting pitchers Travis Connolly and Max Watt were second team picks. The Fighting Knights have now had at least one first team selection in the last four years while the team has had at least four honorees in each of the last two years. A junior out of Orlando, Fla., Borup took the reins of the starting right field position in the middle of February and never looked back, becoming one of the top hitters and defensive players in the Sunshine State Conference. He led the team with a .384 batting average, 17 doubles and 45 runs scored and added two triples, five home runs and 32 runs batted in. Borup also logged 22 multi-hit games and becomes the

first outfielder to garner first team accolades since Gabe MacDougall in 2008. Carter became a force after entering the lineup mid-year. He batted .369 and tied for the team-lead with eight home runs. The Midland, Ga., product chipped in six doubles, 22 RBIs and 26 runs in 28 games played with a .660 slugging percentage. Connolly was solid throughout the season for the Blue & White, posting a team-high six wins on the mound in 77.1 innings of work. He fanned 61 batters and posted a 3.72 earned run average along with one complete game, the fifth in his career. Watt was a strikeout machine, finishing the regular season with 82 Ks, second in the SSC, in 64.2 innings pitched. The Babylon, N.Y., native was 5-2 overall and had a 3.20 ERA, which led all starters on the squad, and had seven starts with at least seven strikeouts. All four will be key in the Fighting Knights pursuit of a national title.

Boca Raton FC Looks to Break Its Own Record

After breaking the APSL record for fans in a game, Boca Raton Football Club is looking to do it again on May 15th versus Miami Dade FC at The Shipyard. 519 fans packed The Shipyard to create an intimidating atmosphere for the opposing team and Boca Raton FC wants to make that the norm in Boca Raton. “The crowd was amazing,” said Gabe Taboada. “We fed off their energy so much, and having those 500-plus people

cheering us on for our very first game was something special.” Boca Raton’s crowd of 519, was the second largest for a fourth division match in South Florida, which might not be much, but when you consider Boca Raton FC is a brand new club in its first season of operation, it’s a huge feat in of itself. “That crowd is something I’ll never forget,” says Braxton Fuster, the author of the firstever Boca Raton FC goal. “When I scored the goal and the crowd just got up and cheered and screamed, that was something I’ll never forget.” “We want to pack the shipyard next game,” says majority owner, Douglas Heizer. “The crowd for our first game was big, but now there’s nowhere to go but up from that.” #PackTheYard will be the official marketing campaign Boca Raton FC will use for its upcoming match on May 15. If you have not picked up your ticket yet, you can do so by going to www.bocaratonfc.com/tickets. Special only until Sunday, use the promo code PACKTHEYARD to receive FREE tickets to the game

Strikers Add Brazilian Bruno Nunes to Attacking Corps

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers bolstered their attack today with the signing of Brazilian forward Bruno Nunes. Bruno joins the club midway through the North American Soccer League (NASL) Spring Season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bruno, 24, will wear his first name on his jersey and will be the first Strikers player to sport the number 90 on his back. “Bruno is an exciting goalscorer who is skillful on the ball and a clinical finisher in front of the net,” said Strikers Soccer Director/Partner Andre Chaves. “As he settles into a new country and team, we expect he will strengthen the attacking side of our game and provide Coach Neveleff with more options up top. Following a career in the top two divisions of Brazil, the 6-foot-1 forward joins the Strikers from Mirassol Futebol Clube.

“I am very happy to sign with the Strikers,” said Bruno through a translator. “It is a great opportunity for me to be able to show my skills and do my best to help the team achieve its goals. I want us to make it to the Championship and score lots of goals.” Bruno started his career in 2010 with second-division side Rio Preto Esporte Clube, playing 298 minutes in the Paulista A2, the state championship for São Paulo. The following year, Bruno scored a careerhigh 15 league goals in his first full season with Rio Preto. After Rio Preto, Bruno went on to play for five other clubs including Ponte Preta, Mogi Mirim, and Oeste. The Strikers are his first team outside of Brazil. In 2014, Bruno won the Copa Fares Lopes with Icasa, which helped his team secure a spot in the Copa do Brasil.
