Quote of the Week:

It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. - Proverbs 20:3 dling on County roads and medians, had its first hearing Tuesday. Under the proposal, panhandlers, protesters, peddlers, and anyone else would have to stay off county roads and road medians while collecting money, waving signs or passing out materials. The county’s new rule would apply to county and state roads, outside of city limits. Dogs have to stay on leashes while stray cats get a new chance at freedom under changes to animal rules Palm Beach County commissioners endorsed Tuesday. The county’s tougher leash law would no longer allow dogs to go without leashes when away from home even if they are considered obedient enough to follow voice commands. The new leash law wouldn’t apply to service dogs, law enforcement dogs or at dog parks and dog beaches. The 2015 Point-in-Time Count indicates that across Palm Beach County during a 24hour time period, 1,421 individuals and families were considered homeless as defined by the federal “Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act.” The

count included those staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing and places not meant for human habitation. Motorists along Interstate 95 can expect nightly traffic disruptions as construction workers build the new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard. Traffic will be rerouted to newly paved outside lanes just north and south of the Spanish River Boulevard overpass. The shift will continue each night to May 21. Office Depot shuttered 20 stores this quarter, throwing 1000 people into the unemployment line. Daggerwing Nature Center is operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department and is located in Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park at 11435 Park Access Road, off Cain Boulevard between Glades Road and Yamato Road, west of Boca Raton.

Community

Seminar to Focus on Positive Interaction Between Police, Youth By Fred Hamilton

Amid a national climate of concern over deadly clashes between young men of color and police, a group of Delray Beach community leaders are hoping to save lives by teaching youth how to handle interactions with law officers. “You and the Law; How to Conduct Yourself When Stopped by the Police,” is a twohour seminar on Saturday at Pompey Park Community Center. The free workshop, which begins at 10 a.m., is designed to teach young people, in particular the members of the Delray Rocks football program, how they should act when dealing with police officers without the situation escalating to violence or arrest, organizers said. “I think young people sometimes get the wrong idea about how to talk to law enforcement personnel, which can escalate a confrontation,” Minister Prince Arafat, a longtime community activist and one of the organizers, said in a news release. “I think they are getting mixed messages. They learn in school that it’s OK to interact with the police, but on the streets, it’s another message.” Scheduled speakers include officers from three local law enforcement agencies, attorney W. Craig Lawson and representatives from the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office. Organizers say the seminar is necessary to protect local youth, and relevant given the recent events that took place between police and unarmed black men Eric Gray in Baltimore, Maryland; Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City. Delray Beach Police officers, while in the police academy, take a 40-hour course focused on how to communicate and the department provides in-service training on communicating, Chief Jeffrey Goldman said. “The most important tool my officers have

is their ability to communicate,” he said. Goldman said the training stresses treating the public with dignity and respect and also how to maintain your composure in situations officers face daily. “Many of the citizens we talk to are in stressful or emotional situations,” he said. “That officer cannot allow himself or herself to become stressed out because of the elements.” Mayor Cary Glickstein praised the seminar as a proactive approach to help students understand their rights and what they can and cannot do legally and as a matter of reality. “Education is the key,” he said. “By taking a proactive approach, we hope we can create experiences where both sides walk away from the situation safe and in control.” The seminar should only enhance the already-good relations with law enforcement in Delray Beach, said C. Ron Allen, president and CEO of KOP Mentoring Network, one of the sponsoring organizations. “We enjoy a good existing relationship with our local law enforcement and we would like it to develop into an even greater one,” said Allen, who is editor of the Boca Raton and Delray Beach tribunes. “We desire the dynamics where the youth/young adults know each officer and each officer knows our youth/young adults like it was some years ago.” Saturday’s workshop is the third of a series, which began in January. The previous two were held at a local school and a church. Sponsors include KOP Mentoring Network, the Delray Beach Police Department, the law offices of W. Craig Lawson, City of Delray Beach, Stuart & Shelby Development and CRA Media Group. Light refreshment will be served, and there will be giveaways. Pompey Park is at 901 NW 2nd St. for more information, call 561- 201-4938 or 561-665-0151.

Boca man Dies in Suspected Drug-Related Incident At Sarasota College By Fred Hamilton

As students at Spanish River High School, Brandon Dickerson enjoyed visiting his classmate Dylan Kai Besser’s home and looked forward to his intellectual conversations. “Dylan was always extremely bright and analytical, which is why I loved having conversations philosophically and just generally with him,” Dickerson wrote as a tribute to his friend recently on Beth Israel Memorial Chapel’s website. “Every interaction I ever had with Dylan was always one of intelligence and humor. Always learning something new.” Besser, 21, who graduated and enrolled at the student at the University of Central Florida, was found dead on May 8 in a dorm room at the New College in Sarasota, where he had visited recently. Besser was the second student to die on the elite public liberal arts school campus over one weekend, police say. Two days later, Julian Toomsen-Hall, 18, a freshman from Georgia, also was found dead in another dorm. As authorities in Sarasota investigate the apparent drug overdoses, they are warning of an uptick in deaths linked to bad drugs. “As a warning to students, residents and visitors, officers with the Sarasota Police Department have received intelligence that suggests there is an increase of the pharmaceutical drug, Fentanyl, being mixed with street drugs in the Sarasota area,” officials at the police department wrote in an email. “This mixture could have deadly consequences.” Sarasota Police Department, which is investigating the deaths with New College’s

campus police, are waiting on toxicology reports to determine the exact cause of deaths. Those results could take weeks, officials said. Dr. Russell Vega, the chief medical examiner for the area, told the Sarasota Herald Tribune that there was a “reasonable likelihood” the deaths were liked either to heroin use, fentanyl, or a mixture of the two. In 2014, 57 people died in Manatee County and 16 in Sarasota County because of the drug or a mixture of both, Vega told the newspaper. New College has launched a task force comprised of students, administrators, faculty, alumni and board members to look into the use of drugs and alcohol on campus. President Donal O’Shea vowed to do everything to ensure there is not a repeat on campus, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune. “We can and will take steps to make sure all students are learning and working in a safe environment where they can reach their greatest potential,” the newspaper quoted O’Shea telling his faculty and staff. Besser had his run ins with the law before he left for college. In August 2010, Boca Raton police charged Besser, then 17, with strong arm robbery after he and five accomplices knocked a man off his bicycle and stole his wallet and work hat, police said. Besser is survived by his parents Bruce and Marcella Dahylquist-Besser, sister Rachel Besser and grandmothers, Sally Dahlquist and Betty Besser. Services were at Beth Israel Boynton Chapel on May 13.

Saluting Our Unsung Heroes For Dan W. Calloway and the seven others recognized for their community service at a luncheon recently, giving back just makes sense. As I sat and listened to their acceptance speeches, one message was constant: In serving others, you let your light shine, and you give others the license to let their lights shine. The 37th Annual Reomia S. Bennett Scholarship Luncheon highlighted community members and leaders who worked to give back and help others. Honorees were Mr. Marvin Leonard, Mr. John E. Jenkins, Ms. Patricia Mainor Johnson, Min. Noble Jewell Lockhart-Mays, Ms. Gloria Scott, Ms. Vanessa Young and yours truly. The honorees varied in types of community service. When you read their bios though, you will see that they are all leaders and role models. Truly, these are unsung heroes, ordinary residents who have not gotten a lot of fanfare. But most of all, people who have a heart of gold for giving. Take for example, Mr. Calloway, who has worked tirelessly for the past 49 years to support the young people of Palm Beach County through mentoring and athletics.

Many of his protégées became professional athletes. He has always impressed on them the importance of being responsible, contributing citizens who give back to their community. And there was Ms. Scott, another crusader who - for years - has worked tirelessly for underserved children in the county. Upon meeting her, one will immediately sense her enthusiasm, passionate approach and organizational abilities. In her role at the Urban League of Palm Beach County, she leads several community programs and works specifically with schools and police agencies on initiatives to provide valuable experiences for young people across the county. For 38 years Mr. Jenkins guided students through the maze of high school and college life as a counselor and coordinator of student activities. Now the retiree mentors second and third grade boys at a local elementary school, he drives cancer patients to treatments and he is active in his church. Ms. Mainor Johnson, who worked 32 years in the school system, corrals children under her wings and offers them encouragement and guidance. She monitors their academic progress and urges them to pursue careers

in public speaking, which she thinks builds their self-confidence to achieve. Ms. Lockhart-Mays, an ordained minister, left teaching after 12 years to start Faith’s Place Centers for Education, Inc., which offers preschool and afterschool enrichment programs; and Ms. Young, director of Community Outreach at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, develops and builds collaborations with underrepresented segments of the community. This committed social justice warrior has exposed thousands of less-fortunate children to the arts and has made it possible for more than two million students to attend programs and performances at the Kravis Center over the last 21 years. Mr. Leonard knows what good music does to the soul. So he uses his talent as a saxophonist to benefit his church and community. This brother works with various community organizations, groups and churches, and tries to inspire young people to always give their best to God. The West Palm Beach Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. sponsored the event at the Hilton Palm Beach Airport Hotel. According to the program, the event was to

give Delta Chapter an opportunity to showcase their “Unsung Heroes of the Palm Beaches” for their exemplary community involvement and award scholarships to nine deserving high school students. College accessibility and affordability remains a challenge for local students and their families. With the loyal support of our community organizations, such as Eta Phi Beta Sorority, our young people can continue to receive educational opportunities. Let’s face it, tuition and fees at public fouryear colleges have increased at an average annual rate of 6 percent beyond inflation in the past 10 years. And many families are forced to decide whether to keep the roof over their heads or send their child to college or university. As the school year comes to a close and these nine deserving students head off to greener pastures, waiting for that opportunity will be nine other students – could be another inventor, a future president of the United States or an educator. You can ensure a deserving student’s dream becomes a reality. Your tax-deductible gift to the Eta Phi Beta Scholarship Fund can make a world of difference.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

How do You Communicate? Every human being comes into the world with communication mechanisms. Even newborn babies know how to share pressing needs to a parent or guardian, capable to supply their request. What many adults fail to understand, even after several years on planet earth, is that communication among fellow humans is a task that demands continued improvement. The mere utterance of words or expression of feelings does not necessarily indicate that a communication has been effectively achieved. Those who are eager to be understood by others, so as to anticipate a response from them, are responsible to convey their message with clarity, free from interfering

noises, and at a moment which offers the best chances of comprehension, and the provision of some form of response. Not only serious issues, but also less significant matters, have the greatest probability of being heard, understood, and acted upon when timing, surroundings, and emotional wellbeing of those engaged in the conversation are key factors taken into consideration. A dialogue does it best! It is the one communicating to another who has the primary responsibility of ascertaining that the message has been heard and understood. While using the vacuum cleaner, when the television or radio are blasting, or when children are fighting or crying nearby, is not the right time to con-

vey messages. The moment a spouse enters the house after a long day at work is never the best time to address any issue of importance to be grasped by the hearer, especially when that issue entails potentially bad news. I once heard of a wise wife who studiously avoided greeting her husband after his long day at work with any bad news, regardless of the seriousness of the issue. So, one day, as soon as her husband arrived home, with a welcoming smile she went to kiss him and proclaimed: “Hi, honey; you should be happy to know that three of our four children are not in the hospital at the moment!” With that creative approach, and the blow softened, she was able gradually to

explain that one of the kids had broken a leg during a ball game, but all else was okay! You can avoid being misunderstood, not being heard, or sharing your thoughts at an inappropriate moment but seeking the right time, the best setting, and the most clear and adequate words which effectively and exhaustively express what you desire to convey. It is not late at night, much less when you are tired in bed ready to sleep, or at moments when other pressing sirens beckon another’s attention that you should spill your concerns or seek an answer to significant matters. Communication is not hard, but it needs to be done effectively!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood Charles Dickens may not have completed his final novel, but theatre patrons in South Florida will soon have the chance to finish it themselves when Sol Children Theatre presents The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the Tony Award-winning musical, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from June 12 through June 28. This wildly funny and warm-hearted musical begins when the Music Hall Royale (an hilariously loony Victorian musical troupe) “puts on” its flamboyant rendition of the unfinished Dickens mystery in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud; Miss Bud is in turn engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood... who disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve. Has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunnit? The giddy playfulness of this play-within-a-play draws the audience toward one of the show’s most talked-about features – allowing the audience to vote on

the solution as prelude to a most unusual and uproarious finale! Rosalie Grant and Gisbert Heuer will codirect/musical direct the production. Murphy Hayes will play ‘Mr. William Cartwright, Chairman’, and Alyssa Buelow is ‘Throttle, Stage Manager & Barkeep’. James Skiba has been cast as John Jasper, Yasmin Adli as Drood, Erin Cunningham as Rosa Bud, and Alexa Baray and Steven Michael Kennedy will play Helena and Neville Landless. Other cast members include Elvin Negron, Robyn Eli Brenner, and Kyle Laing. Ember Everett and Christopher Lam, who recently received excellent reviews in Evening Star Productions’ extremely successful production of The Addams Family will play The Princess Puffer and Durdles. Tickets for The Mystery of Edwin Drood are on sale now, and can be purchased on line at http://www.solchildren.org/ or by calling 561-447-8829. Tickets are $15; $10 for children aged 11 or younger. Sol Theatre is located at 3333 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton (33431).

Longtime Commander of Boca High's JROTC Bids Farewell BOCA RATON - Lieutenant Commander Kenneth “Ken” Bingham, who led Boca Raton High School’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps to seven state titles and two national championships, will soon bid farewell to the program after 21 years. Bingham, who will retire in the fall, announced at the beginning of the 2015 school year that this would be his last as the school’s naval science instructor. He took his ceremonial “crossing the bridge” at the program’s Change of Command ceremony on April 29. In 2011, Bingham’s squad won the school’s first ever national title, and last month, he won his second. “Winning a national championship, what a way to go out,” he said at last week’s Change of Command ceremony. “Not in my wildest dreams.” The former Navy pilot and flight instructor retired after a 22-year naval career and almost immediately launched a new careerbuilding America’s future. In 1994, he helped establish the Boca Raton Community High School NJROTC program with 39 cadets after working as a chaperone for his niece’s NJROTC in Pasco County. Upon his return, he learned that the Navy was considering starting a ROTC unit at Boca Raton High and he applied. Today, the program is 180 cadets strong –

nearly 800 to date - and has earned national acclaim. The more than 150 trophies, ribbons, and awards are a testament to the hard work of his students and Bingham’s dedication to young Americans every day. Bingham’s classroom is not the traditional with the average high school students. His students come to him from all walks of life. Some arrive with 4.0 grade point averages determined to pursue a military career. And there are those who reluctantly show up or were sent to the program as a last resort. Regardless of their situation, Bingham gives them his best effort and the results are proof. Bingham credits his father, a former police officer, for the values and principles, which are the cornerstone of his success. “My father believed in living an honest and accomplished life,” Bingham said in a 2014 interview. “He instilled in us knowledge, skills, and integrity believes those attributes gave him the opportunity to accomplish many things in my life.” Because of those experiences, he wanted to “pay it forward” to today’s youth. His goals are best expressed in the mission statement of his NJROTC unit: To instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

I attended the show Sophie, Totie and Belle at the Weisman Delray Community Center Theater on Mothers Day with my friends. I met the co-producers of the show, old friends from the Atlantis Playhouse in Lantana, Jamison Troutman and Gary Waldman who also starred in the show along with Stephanie Lamay, who played Belle Barth, Stephanie Genovese who played Sophie Tucker and belted out some great songs and Christie Oliver who played Totie Fields. There were some great songs and many potty mouth jokes that kept the audience laughing. After the show it was on to Trattoria Romana in Boca Raton for a great dinner with Bob and friends. The food here is not to be missed.

What Are Your ‘Best Practices?’ In today’s business and professional world, we often hear companies talk about “best practices” that can distinguish them from their competitors. One definition of this term is “a method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that is used as a benchmark…a ‘best’ practice can evolve to become better as improvements are discovered.” There is wisdom for any organization to assess its best practices, not only for how it compares with others, but also to determine how it can enhance what it is already doing. Perhaps you are involved some way in doing that where you work. But I wonder if it would be wise for each of us to evaluate our “best practices” as individuals as well. Years ago I had been working for a nonprofit for several years when a top executive I was meeting with asked how I envisioned my future with the organization. The question caught me by surprise, because I was not intending to “climb the corporate ladder.” In my role as a writer and editor, I felt fulfilled, confident I was exactly where I was best suited for supporting the organization’s goals and objectives. At that time, my “best practice” was to understand what I was most qualified to do and what I found most meaningful and rewarding. To strive for a more prestigious role would have meant doing less of what I enjoyed and assuming more administrative responsibilities. While I recognized those as noble pursuits, I had a clear understanding that was not the course I wanted to take. As Oswald Chambers, one of my favorite writers, stated many years ago, “Good is the

To Sell or Not to Sell?

enemy of the best.” A promotion would have been a good thing, but for me it would not have been the best thing. I have found the Bible speaks directly to this idea of “best practices” for us as individuals. Here are several examples: We come into this life with a special purpose. It is humbling to consider that even before we were born, God had a special plan in mind for our lives. What we do – and what we are good at doing – is not an accident.“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:1314). “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”(Ephesians 2:10). We function best when working in concert with others. In any organization, some people have more visible, prestigious roles, but every job is important for achieving the corporate mission.“But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body” (1 Corinthians 12:18-20). We work most effectively when using our gifts and abilities to the fullest. When we are using the skills and capabilities that are uniquely and innately ours, we can perform our responsibilities with much enthusiasm and passion. In doing so, we will receive recognition for the quality of our work – and we will be able to do more of it.“Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men” (Proverbs 22:29).

If you are 65 or older and you own life insurance that you may not need any longer, chances are good that you have thought about the idea of selling the coverage to a 3rd party investor. Selling a life insurance policy may not appeal to everyone. Known as a life settlement transaction, there can be significant differences in what you receive from an independent 3rd party buyer versus the life insurance company that issued the policy. With disclosure and transparency firmly in place in most states, it is in your best interest to consider selling unwanted policies and comparing the difference you will receive from that offered by the insurance company. Ninety percent of seniors who lapse policies without knowing about a life settlement indicated they would have considered that option had they known about it and 79 percent feel their advisors should have informed them of the option. Depending on several factors, including age, health and the type of policy you own, there can be significant secondary market value and that may translate into being paid 20-30% of the policy’s face value. Many people consider lapsing or surrendering a policy because they no longer want to pay premiums for an asset they no longer need or can afford. Before surrendering or selling a policy, talk with professionals. The benefits of a life settlement: • Receive a higher cash payout than cash surrender value. • Receive money for a term policy before its conversion date. • Create cash to fund alternative coverage such as guaranteed income annuities, long term care insurance or life insurance with the installment payout option. • Donate proceeds or policy to a charity for tax deduction. Once you thoroughly understand fact from fiction, you are more likely to make a decision in your best interest. The decision to sell an unwanted life insurance policy is still considered a new option for policy owners. It takes time in the insurance industry for “new” to become “normal”.

May 22 - June 4, 2015

Many life insurance companies were initially opposed to their policyholders selling policies instead of lapsing them or cashing them in for surrender value. To put this in perspective, opposing the sale of your policy to a 3rd party is the equivalent of Ford opposing the sale of your car to carmax. The economics of selling a policy can be superior to the alternatives. Nearly 30 year ago, 46 year old, Dr. Smith purchased $2,000,000 of life insurance to protect his wife and 14 year old daughter against the loss of his $300,000 income. Today, at 75, his daughter is a successful 43 year old attorney and the income protection “need” is gone. With an offer to sell his policy for $300,000 to a life settlement company or cash it in for $100,000 of surrender value, the decision appears to be simple. Unfortunately, each year there are thousands of people who are unaware of the life settlement option or they do not give proper consideration to the risks and rewards. Potential Disadvantages: • Life Insurance benefits are usually income tax-free. Life Settlements on the other hand may be subject to income tax. • Paperwork is required to transfer the ownership of the policy. • Proceeds will benefit buyers, typically non-family members. When you are ready to consider the settlement option, seek out an experienced life insurance professional. The right life insurance professional will understand your objectives, should have access to the relevant settlement brokers and should help you interpret the offers from competing buyers. If you own life insurance, have it reviewed. There is no downside to having your coverage reviewed and assessing your goals and objectives at the same time. Life insurance is enjoying a period of innovation, offering better value across the board. A professional analysis of your mortality risks and longevity risks will prove to be time well spent. Business Development Board, School District Partner for Take a Student to Work Day The Business Development Board and the Palm Beach County School District have added a new alternative to the nationwide Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day celebrated every year across the country. The new program, called “Take a Student to Work Day” is scheduled for May 26. The School District is still holding its annual “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” event the same day, May 26. Parents are encouraged to bring their children of all ages to work with them. The Business Development Board’s Branding and Marketing Education Task Force created Take a Student to Work Day so high school students could gain knowledge about the top-tier employment opportunities that are available in Palm Beach County. “It’s important that students are able to see first-hand that there are many great career opportunities here,” said Kelly Smallridge, President and CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. “We want our best and brightest students to remain in Palm Beach County.” Public and private businesses are encouraged to volunteer to host a student for a day of job shadowing. The Business Development Board is particularly looking for businesses within the county’s booming

industry clusters including agribusiness, aviation, aerospace, engineering , business and financial services, distribution and logistics, clean technology, healthcare, information technology, biotechnology and manufacturing. Businesses who are interested in participating are urged to contact Allie Amelio at aamelio@bdb.org. So far several major local businesses have already volunteered to host a student including the Glidden Spina Partners Architects, The O’Donnell Agency, the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, Lockheed Martin, Biotools, Inc., NCCI, Holdings Inc., BDO, DePuy Synthes Power Tools, JFK Medical Center, Aerojet Rocketdyne, JP Morgan and Wellington Regional Medical Center. The Business Development Board will notify participating businesses by Tuesday, May 19 whether a student has been placed with their company and give them some guidelines for the day. Students will not receive service credits towards graduation from the school district for participation but they will receive an excused absence from school if they provide a note in advance advising the school of their participation in the program.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” Better Than the Original

A reboot can improve on the original. Case in point is “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which was reconceived by its originator, George Miller. In development more than 10 years, the new “Mad Max” is bigger, badder and in many ways better than the 1979 original, which starred Mel Gibson as the sullen but explosive ex-Australian policemen trying to do some good in a world ruined and gone mad, ruled by barbarians. All the reboot lacks is Max’s faithful dog, which added a most poignant touch to the original. The new Max is handsome 37-year-old British actor Tom Hardy. Hardy’s Max hardly has any lines. It’s all action stunts from the very first frame, when Max hears the approach of the murderous “War Boys,” who are ruled by the insane fascist despot, King Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), outfitted in Plexiglas armour with attached breathing apparatus. In his supercharged hot rod Australian Ford, Max is herded, cornered, captured and put on

a cage, with a Hannibal Lecter-style metal bridgework bolted on his face. It isn’t the first or last time Max is in a seemingly hopeless situation. If Max didn’t escape there wouldn’t be a story. So of course he does, ultimately to team with rogue Imperator Furiosa (39-year-old South African actress-model Charlize Theron), who has double-crossed King Joe by veering off course to collect precious fuel to instead free five stowaway “wives” of the King, who are more like sexual slaves. Although Theron is tarted up with a buzz haircut, a bionic arm and black grease over half her skull, Theron’s fine beauty still shines through. This will not escape Max’s attention. The human characters are just sketches; secondary to the crazy machines and their amazing high-speed crashes in the Australian and African outback. The outlandish contraptions are a gearhead’s delight. According to Engadget magazine, 150 of the contraptions were constructed and at least half of them destroyed. My favorite is King Joe’s rig, which is topped by two 1959 Cadillac bodies grafted together. Real live action is what separates “Mad Max” from such computer-generated cartoons as “The Avengers” and “Furious 7.” Miller even hired Cirque du Solelil artists to perform some of the acrobatic feats. Though the movie is two hours long it fairly flies by and leaves one wondering if there won’t be little Maxes and Furiosas in the future. Rating: 

Lynn University and producer Jan McArt present

Stewart Tauscher, died peacefully on May 7, 2015, at the age of 80.

Stewart was born on May 22, 1934 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from New York University, and served in the Army from 1956-1958, where he was stationed in Germany. Stewart was a driven professional with a successful career in Marketing and Direct Mail. His career started at Redbook Magazine, and then continued as the Direct Mail Manager of Mutual of America. Stewart was always plugged into the news, as his day could not officially start without the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and whichever local newspaper could not live up to either the Times or the Journal. Stewart was often outspoken, entertaining and engaging, and had a special way of frequently imparting words of wisdom to his sons and grandchildren – as well as anyone else he engaged in conversation. Stewart married Arlene (Rosenberg), and they raised their family in northern New Jersey, first in Teaneck, and then settling in Upper Saddle River. Stewart eventually retired in Boca Raton, F.L., where he later met and married Mary (Kelly). He leaves behind his two beloved sons and daughterin laws, Preston and Cathy Tauscher, and Brian and Linda Tauscher. He took great pride in his 4 grandchildren Chase, Jackson, Bradley and Taylor. He is preceded in death by his son, Craig, and his parents Joseph and Frances. He was surrounded by many great friends throughout his life. He will deeply be missed. Forever memories! Funeral will be held at Cedar Park Cemetery, Emerson N.J. on Friday May 22, 2015 at 1:45pm, meeting at the Cemetery office and following to graveside for the service.

Boca Raton FC Breaks Home Attendance Record

By Aaron Tefel

Boca Raton FC hosted their second game of the season at Boca Raton High School (a.k.a. “The Shipyard”) on Friday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m., where they faced off against Miami Dade FC with a massive showing from fans that allowed the team to once again

break its home attendance record. There were 662 people in attendance at Friday’s game, which allowed the team to break the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) home attendance record with this massive turnout. Boca Raton FC also held the previous record for home attendance when they hosted their first game

of the season on May 1st, where they won 4-1 against South Florida FC. That game had 519 fans turnout to root for the team. “The atmosphere was electric,” says head coach Marcelo Castillo. “The support we have been receiving from the community has been tremendous and having over 600 fans tonight at our game is a huge indication of that.” For Friday’s game the team used #PackTheYard on social media as its official marketing campaign to alert fans and the local community to come out and support the team on May 15th. Boca Raton FC even had a special limited-time promotion that allowed fans to get free tickets to the game if they used the promo code PACKTHEYARD when they purchased tickets on the team’s official website. “It’s very special to me to play at home in front of an electrifying crowd like this,” said midfielder Colby Burdette, who played for the Boca Raton High School Bobcats in High School. “This turnout will only get better as continue to build and grow during this APSL season. We are still building the fanbase, it will only get better and louder.” The Shipyard is already the most feared

stadium in the league to come to during a game, fans from the opposing team were impressed with how loud the Shipyard can get and opposing players are resctful of the job well done by the Boca Raton FC staff. “This is a professional level organization,” Roberto Linck, of Miami Dade FC told reporters after the game. “Boca Raton FC is doing everything right and this is the loudest stadium in the league.” While Boca Raton FC did end up losing 1-0 to Miami Dade FC, everyone in attendance was cheering for their team as they enjoyed the night with both family and friends. About Boca Raton FC: Boca Raton Football Club is a fourth division club from Boca Raton playing in the American Premier Soccer League. In just a few months the clubs has broken APSL attendance records in both their home games and have been the most talk-about club in the league. Boca Raton FC’s goal is to be a pathway for players to stay fit, compete at a high level and be part of a professional soccer atmosphere as well as bringing highlevel competition to the City of Boca Raton where residents can watch a game in a safe, fun, and exciting environment.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers Lose 1-0 Versus Interstate Rivals

Photos by Matt May/Tampa Bay Rowdies

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were defeated by Tampa Bay Rowdies 1-0 on Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. The loss drops the Strikers record to 2-1-3 in the North American Soccer League (NASL) Spring Season. The match’s only goal came when forward Robert Hernandez scored at close range off a rebound in the 55th minute. Hernandez pushed home the rebound after Strikers goalkeeper David Meves parried a Maicon Santos shot. The score followed a turnover on a clearing attempt by Fort Lauderdale defender Frankie Sanfilippo in which he slipped on the wet pitch. “We didn’t do well,” said Strikers Head Coach Marcelo Neveleff. “We started a little flat in the second half and that’s why Tampa scored that goal taking advantage of the momentum. We weren’t good enough close to the box. We need to work on that. It’s sad that we lost three points.” The defeat evens the Strikers’ record at 1-1 in 2015 Coastal Cup play. It also puts the Rowdies in the driver’s seat for the roundrobin competition between the two sides and league newcomer Jacksonville Armada FC. Fort Lauderdale and Tampa have each defeated the Armada this season. Each of the three teams will play each other two more times this season in chasing the Cup, which is currently held by the Strikers.

Rain began falling early in the first half and continued throughout much of the game. Despite the wet pitch, it was a back-andforth affair with both teams attempting several long passes to initiate attacks. The Fort Lauderdale defense was stingy in the opening 45 minutes, limiting the Rowdies’ chances. Strikers’ goalkeeper David Meves stopped six shots in the opening stanza, including a critical save in the 37th minute when he came out far from the net before pushing away a Ben Sweat shot. Defender Jordan Graye, making his first start for the Red & Gold, helped keep the game scoreless in the 21st minute with a goal-line clearance at the back post. Fort Lauderdale had a handful of attempts at the equalizer late in the game, including a missed opportunity by Aly Hassan in the 88th minute when he couldn’t corral a Walter Ramirez pass inside in the 18-yard box. Hassan’s first effort came shortly after he entered the contest. His right-footed shot forced the Rowdies’ goalkeeper Matt Pickens to go low for the save. In the 83rd minute, Manny Gonzalez sent an opportunity high over the crossbar from distance. Strikers midfielder Léo Moura did not travel with the team after suffering a leg injury earlier this week. The match marked the 15th consecutive game between the two sides without a tie. The two teams last played to a draw in their inaugural meeting in the NASL Modern Era, when they played to a 1-1 draw on June 29, 2011. The loss stops a two-game win streak for Fort Lauderdale against Tampa Bay. The Strikers return to home action when they host the Carolina Railhawks at Lockhart Stadium on May 23.

Lynn University Appoints Devin Crosby as Director of Athletics

Lynn University has appointed Devin Crosby as director of athletics for the NCAA Division II Fighting Knights. Previously, as deputy athletics director atKent State University, Crosby helped raise funds for scholarships and facilities, improved student attendance at games and increased the national profile of the athletics program. He has also held leadership positions with other successful athletics programs at Northeastern University, University of Virginia and University of Houston. Crosby was selected from more than 270 candidates in a highly competitive nationwide search. He will become the seventh director in the Fighting Knight’s 30-year history. “Devin comes to us with a passion for college athletics and a fundamental appreciation for the spirit, service and strength that

drives our exceptional student athletes,” says Lynn University President Kevin M. Ross. “He will be an engaging leader for Lynn’s program, which has a winning track record not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom.” In his new role at Lynn, Crosby will be responsible for fostering the learning and service-oriented culture for which Lynn’s sports program is known. The Fighting Knights were recently recognized as a winner of the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Award of Excellence, and nearly 70 percent of Lynn’s student athletes earned a 3.0 or higher grade point average during the 2013-14 academic year. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to help Lynn develop lasting relationships with the community,” says Crosby. “Lynn University is a dynamic, innovative and special place, and I look forward to being a part of its mission to help students succeed.” Lynn’s athletics program has grown to more than 240 student athletes earning an overall 3.31 GPA in fall 2014. The university has 34 Sunshine State Conference titles, and the men’s sports program was awarded the 2014-15 Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for athletic excellence. The men’s soccer team brought home the university’s 23rd national championship in December, and the Fighting Knights currently have four teams competing in the NCAA Tournament.
