Quote of the Week:

Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company; for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble. Proverbs 24:1-2 tethered when away from home. That ends the past exception allowing dogs to go without leashes if they are considered obedient enough to follow owners’ commands. Just say, ‘No’” could turn into “Just say, ‘No big deal’” when it comes to marijuana in Palm Beach County. Possessing a small amount of marijuana would become a minor infraction instead of a criminal offense under a proposal Palm Beach County officials agreed to explore. The idea is to allow law enforcement officers to issue civil citations, similar to traffic tickets, instead of filing criminal charges when one is found with a small amount of marijuana. Panhandlers, fundraisers and campaigners will have to stay off Palm Beach County roads and medians under new rules to keep people from mingling with traffic. Anyone collecting money, passing out pamphlets or waving signs would have to stay on sidewalks and road shoulders and can no longer wander among lined-up cars at busy intersections. Breaking the rules could trigger penalties up to a $500 fine or 60 days in jail,

though the Sheriff ’s Office maintains that warnings will come before handcuffs and tickets. The new rules that the County Commission approved apply to roads outside city limits, but local cities could opt to impose them as well. Gary Rack, of GR Restaurant Management Group, and his wife, Videl, have listed their five-bedroom, six-bath, 10,424-squarefoot Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club home featuring a wine room, two-story rotunda, infinity pool, and 110 feet of deepwater frontage and dock for $7.495 million. Robert Marton has received the James and Marjorie Baer Outstanding Young Leadership Award for his outstanding efforts on behalf of the Federation and the Jewish community. The award was presented by Marjorie Baer and Richard Steinberg at the Federation’s 2015 Annual Meeting. Anne Jacobson has been elected Chair Designate of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, a newly created position on the Board.

Dr. Robert Watson, Lynn University American Studies professor, author and prolific speaker, was awarded the gold medal known as the IPPY for U.S. history books at the 19th annual Independent Publisher Book Awards. He won the award for his 36th book, “America’s First Crisis: The War of 1812”. Ben Berger is the new Executive Chef and Tommaso Frenquelucci is the new manager of Mariposa, located in Niemen Marcus, 5860 Glades Rd. Boca. The science playground at Sugar Sand Park in Boca has closed after the city determined repairs were needed and major renovations were about to begin, but the carousel and tot will remain open. The reopening is projected for next spring. Leashes are now a dog-walking requirement for Palm Beach County pooches. New countywide rules require keeping dogs

The “George Long Awards”, named for the City’s first appointed mayor in 1924 whose devotion to the Boca Raton was renowned, have been established and will be presented to an individual and an organization that have championed the tradition of bring-

ing indelible visionary ideas to Boca Raton. The Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton Mayor’s Ball Committee in collaboration with distinguished Honorary Advisors will receive nominations and select the award recipients. The event’s Honorary Chair is Mayor Susan

Haynie. Honorary Advisors include former mayors Honorable Susan Whelchel and Honorable Steven Abrams, who currently serves as a Palm Beach County Commissioner; Boca Raton Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth; Former Deputy Mayor Constance Scott; and Council Members Michael Mullaugh, Jeremy Rodgers and Scott Singer. Under the leadership of Co-chairs Kari Oeltjen and Jon Kaye – and following the lead of Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, where Mayor’s Balls have been annual events for several years – the Rotary Club Downtown Boca is excited to bring such an event to Boca Raton. “The Mayor’s Ball is a tribute to those who have made this community the best it can be and the generosity that continues to make a difference in the lives of so many,” said incoming Rotary Club Downtown Boca President Jon Kaye. “In collaboration with Mary Csar and the Boca Raton Historical Society we envision the Mayor’s Ball as opportunity for participants to enjoy and enhance their appreciation of the City’s history and bold visionaries,” said Co-Chair and Rotary Club of

West Boca Medical Centers Lauded for Maternity Care Service By CRA News Service A report released recently by Healthgrades, the nation’s most trusted, independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes, named West Boca Medical Center a recipient of both the 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award and the 2015 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award. This also marks the ninth consecutive year that the hospital has been a recipient of the Healthgrades Maternity Care Excellence Award. It has also earned several other awards for its patience care including an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group five years in a row, as well as the 2014 Kids Crown Award for Best Emergency Room in Palm Beach County. “We have a longstanding reputation for providing outstanding care to women and babies in the community,” said Mitch Feldman, the hospital’s CEO, said in a news release. “These distinctions are proof of our commitment to delivering high quality services on a daily basis.” Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for virtually every hospital in the 13 states that provide all-payer state data from 2011 through 2013, according to the release. Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes: • From 2011-2013, if all hospitals in the 13 states included in this analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, on average, 92,883 patients experiencing

one or more in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided. • Further, from 2011-2013, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, have, on average, a 35.1 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award. • From 2011-2013, if all hospitals in the 13 states included in the analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Healthgrades 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, on average, 100,905 patients with one or more in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided. • Additionally, from 2011-2013, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award have, on average, a 34.4 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award. “When selecting a hospital, access to quality information can mean the difference between life and death, so it’s more important than ever that consumers research their choice,” Evan Marks, chief strategy officer for Healthgrades, said in a release. “Consumers can have confidence that West Boca Medical Center has demonstrated an established commitment to maternal, obstetrics and gynecological care.”

EDITORIAL By C. Ron Allen

Has Superman Finally Arrived? It’s been two weeks now since School superintendent Robert Avossa began as the district’s education chief and already many are raising eyebrows. Facial expressions do not clearly convey their thoughts, but in the back of their minds, some are optimistic. I have been speaking to employees, parents and stakeholders. And what I have been hearing from them and seeing are expressions of hope: Hope that finally Palm Beach County School District will increase its ranking in long-term student success among other districts in the state, hope that the graduation rate of African American boys will mirror those of other similar districts in the country, and hope that instead of suspending students for trivial infractions, teachers will deploy strategies to get them more engaged and develop a love for school and learning. My goals is for 90 percent of Palm Beach County students to graduate on time; 85 percent of Palm Beach County’s seniors will be eligible for admission to a college or university in Florida; and 100 percent of Palm Beach County’s graduates will be work-ready.

Like many in the news media, I am somewhat cautious – largely because that’s a natural instinct for us and secondly, this is South Florida, the hotbed of flimflam artists who are always trying to make a quick dollar at the expense of hard-working taxpayers. I must admit, I am impressed by Avossa. I have spent much of my career here in Palm Beach County, and among my varied assignments was covering the school system. In fact, I date back to superintendent Tom Mills in 1988. And I cannot recall the time when a new or interim superintendent held a forum at the onset to hear from the stakeholders. As part of his 90-day plan, Avossa is conducting a series of public shows where he is listening to the community in all four quadrants of the county. In an effort to be transparent and open with teachers, students, and the public, he has taken to social media. He is tweeting and he wants to hear from his clients. There is no doubt that Avossa can do what it takes to achieve those expectations. He did it during his four years as the top cheese in Fulton County, Ga.

In fact, in talking to residents in both Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina and Fulton County, it was clear that Avossa was a no nonsense leader with a proven track record of increasing student achievement. In Fulton County, for example, within his first two years on the job, Avossa shook up the district’s top brass after discovering that too many of them were not prepared for the challenges. Nearly half of principals and school leaders either left the district, were fired, or retired. And in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, one of the largest systems in the country, where he served as chief strategy and accountability officer, an area superintendent and as chief of staff, the district experienced significant student achievement improvement under his watch. Already, I have seen some signs of his vision, with the movement of principals from high achieving schools to lower performing schools. Some have bristled at that move – but if you want to raise the level of those schools, who best to do so than proven leaders. After all, it’s either use resources

from within or bring in your own, which would not sit too well with many. We all agree things need to improve, but again, do not expect changes too soon. A ship does not turn at the same pace as a car or even a semi-tractor trailer. It will take some time to cultivate a culture of excellence. Someone said that they feared there will be challenges from the union. That’s a given. That’s the union’s role. But I am sure he is skilled enough to work for the union. After all, his first order of business day one on the job after getting his coffee was meeting with the union. Now, that was a brilliant move. Avossa has a tall order to fill, but based on the dance at the honeymoon, my gut feeling is that he will meet all expectations. Only time will tell is he is a superman or rather the superintendent who will move Palm Beach County from being ranked at 11th by niche.com, a 13-year-old website that had previously ranked colleges, to being in the top fifth in the Sunshine State.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Learn to Communicate Better! Having a vocabulary is essential for all human interactions. It is with words that we share our accumulated knowledge, and communicate our deepest emotions about any issue important to us, or a new idea being considered by us. People remain free to convey such feelings, or not, but it is with clearly formed phrases that our evaluation of any situation can best be expressed, and our personal opinion made known! Again, we need the right words if what we say is to be understood and a positive impact made! Nevertheless, there are situations in life when the most loquacious persons find

themselves at a loss for words which best verbalize their mindset at a particular moment. It is also true that sometimes a person’s actions speak louder than words. Children, which might fail to employ the magic words “thank you” after receiving a present, may still manifest their enormous gratitude, but in a way unique to them! Most often, it comes by the interest immediately shown for the gift, by the manner of treating the gift, and by a variety of other positive reactions to it, short of the specific, appropriate terms of appreciation. Right words, however, remain the best

vehicles to express one’s thoughts and anything a person wishes to communicate. Some people may utilize bumper-stickers on their cars, wear T-shirts with a message, carry posters or banners to manifest their opinions on a variety of concerns. Yet, words coming directly from a person’s mind and mouth are most preferred. This is so, especially, in conversations between individuals. Developing a good vocabulary is the most adequate way for anyone to select the right words in any interpersonal, human exchange. And the most effective manner to be in control of language is through much

reading and the quick employment of new terms learned, as one converses with others, writes in a diary, produces an article or essay, or utilizes public platforms to address any audience. Using the right words in any situation is always the most ideal route to follow. Addressing any issue with clarity seldom leaves any doubt in people’s minds as to what is being conveyed. The communicator is the one responsible to make the ideas fully lucid, for the benefit of readers or hearers. This is especially significant when the goal of what is conveyed demands action.

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Museum Offers Summer Programs Race to Stop Domestic Abuse at AVDA’s 16th Annual Race For Hope for Entire Family By CRA News Service

For families looking for fun things to do this summer when the kids are out of school and the weather is too nice to be cooped up inside watching TV, the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach has announced a series of events to entertain the entire family all season long. The activities, which are quite affordable, include a cultural empowerment camp for the children and an outdoor groove fest where people can dance and relax without breaking the bank. On July 18 from 7:30 to 10 p.m., summertime fun-seekers can enjoy music and food in a casual backyard setting with family and friends at FUNK-SWAY. The mini-music fest, which is in collaboration with Smooth Bounce Entertainment, features DJ Samore and a live band that delivers dynamic R&B, jazz and Latin sounds. “FUNK-SWAY is our chance to give residents an event where they can bring their family, relax and enjoy summer with a relaxed vibe,” Charlene Jones, museum director, said in a news release. “We hope this will be the kind of mini-music fest that Delray Beach is known for.” Food will be on sale at the event, which will be on the Spady Museum Complex lawn, 170 NW 5th Ave. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Cost is $10 at the gate. Cash will be the only acceptable method of payment. Parents seeking a way to occupy the kids

during the downtime at home can choose the Museum’s Youth Cultural Empowerment Camp from July 7 through Aug. 13, at the museum. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Museum officials say children, ages 8 to 13, will keep their brains active with activities such as field trips, history workshops and seminars in photography, theatre, yoga and live performances. It will culminate in an exhibit installation and opening of the youth’s work and a performance that will be open to the community. Funding for the camp is provided, in part, by the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, the Lattner Family Foundation, Inc., The Office Depot Foundation and The Florida Council for Social Studies Endowment, in support of Historical Preservation and Education. Registration fee is $50. And with front row seats to some of the city’s best sights and landmarks, the Ride & Remember Trolley Tour will take riders through the historical districts of Delray Beach on July 11 and Aug. 8. Cost for the two-hour, narrated tour aboard an air-conditioned trolley, is $20 per person. The tours are from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The trolley is funded with support from State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Palm Beach County, Tourist Development Council, and Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. For more information, to register for the camp or for tickets, call 561-279-8883.

FAU’s “The Royal Family” Opens on June 26 Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents Festival Repertory Theatre 2015. The comedy “The Royal Family” will run from Friday, June 26 through Saturday, July 25; the musical “She Loves Me” will run from Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 26; two big band concerts will be presented on Saturday, July 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 19 at 2 p.m.; and a Piano Gala will be featured on Saturday, July 25 at 5 p.m. All shows are at the University Theatre and Studio One Theatre at 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Tickets can be purchased at www. fauevents.com or by calling 800-564-9539. A full schedule of the performances can be found at www.fau.edu/festivalrep. “The Royal Family” is a rollicking comedy that offers a thinly-veiled parody of the legendary Barrymore Family (particularly John and Ethel Barrymore) – stars of stage and screen. Written by the comic team of George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, the play is a joyous romp exploring the eccentricities of one of America’s most “royal” families. Nominated for a TONY Award in 2010 for Best Revival of a Play, “The Royal Family” is a real crowd pleaser. “She Loves Me” is considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written. The play is set in a 1930s European June 26 - July 2, 2015

perfumery, where rival clerks Amalia and Georg unwittingly fall in love after responding to a “lonely hearts advertisement” in the newspaper. The play, which was nominated for five TONY Awards in 1964 and the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in 1993, was the basis of the film “You’ve Got Mail.” The music for the play was written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, who also wrote the music for “Fiddler On the Roof,” and the book was written by Joe Masteroff, who also wrote the book for “Cabaret.” Festival Repertory Theatre also includes two big band concerts featuring hits from the 30s, 40s and 50s presented by the FAU Swing Era Jazz Band; and a four-piano extravaganza. “Festival Rep,” now in its 17th year, will once again feature professional equity actors working alongside FAU’s finest graduate students in their last production before they graduate and enter the world of professional theatre. The professional actors include Barry Tarallo and Megan Buzzard. Tarallo has appeared in five Broadway shows, and many regional plays and musicals; Buzzard appeared in the national tour of “The Music Man” and in several regional musicals

“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.” No, it does not sound like a barrel of laughs. However this small independent film is quite funny, dealing with such a touchy subject, and at times it is moving and even profound. “Me and Earl etc.” was adapted from the 2013 young adult novel by Jesse Andrews by director Alfonzo Gomez-Rejon, who previously showed an affinity for young people by directing eight episodes of “Glee.” The “Me” of the title is deadpan narrator Greg Gaines, a 17-year-old Pittsburgh high school senior, played by Thomas Mann. Greg is awkward, alienated and disaffected and even proud that he is not part of any high school clique. His best and seemingly only friend is Earl (RJ Cryer II), who shares Greg’s love of old art house and B movies. Since childhood Greg and Earl have been making crude parodies of famous movies with pun titles such as “400 Bros,” “Seven Seals,” “Breathe Less” and “A Sockwork Orange.” The dying girl of the title is Rachel Kushner (Olivia Cooke, in a touching, never overwrought performance)). Greg knew Rachel back in Hebrew School. One fateful day Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) solemnly tells Greg Rachel has been diagnosed with leukemia, and says it is his duty to visit her. Greg is none too pleased about this duty, but when he sees Rachel in her room full of pillows he immediately likes her. His affection for her will grow, and he even introduces her to Earl and shows her some

of the silly films they have made. That’s enough about the plot. There are some interesting supporting characters; particularly Greg and Earl’s favorite teacher, a tattooed too-cool-for school guy named Mr. McCarthy (Jon Bernthal). Greg’s dad (Nick Offerman) is called a sociology professor, but he does not seem to do much of anything. Rachel’s mother (Molly Shannon) obviously has a drinking problem, but nothing is made of it. Then there is the resident weirdo, Ill Phil, played by Masam Holden and the obligatory pretty girl, Madison, played sympathetically by Katherine C. Hughes. Perhaps I related a little too closely to self-loathing Greg, for I too love movies, made a few of my own, and never felt like I fit in with high school life. I am not alone though, for “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Drama at Sundance 2015, where it got a standing ovation. Rating: 1/2

The Research Park at Florida Atlantic University announces that Susan Whelchel, former mayor of the City of Boca Raton, has been appointed to serve on the Florida Atlantic Research & Development Authority. Nominated by Commissioner Steven Abrams, Whelchel was appointed unanimously by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners on June 2, 2015 for a four year term beginning on June 8. Separately, nominated by Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Lonnie Maier was re-appointed unanimously by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners,

An Evening with Dr. Ben Carson A huge crowd attended a wonderful cocktail party at the Marine Max yacht showroom in Pompano Beach where the guest speaker was Dr. Ben Carson. This event was put on by the Broward Rep. Party. Dr.

Carson is a very eloquent speaker who wooed the crowd with what he would do if elected President, some very interesting choices. Great food and drinks were served to the very large crowd.

also on June 2, 2015. During her tenure as mayor, Whelchel worked to ensure a strong relationship between the City of Boca Raton and Florida Atlantic University, the Research Park’s key community partner. Through the City’s strategic planning process, Susan continually supported policy decisions that championed the FAU football stadium, medical school, and the independent Research Park. As mayor, she received the Talon Award from Florida Atlantic University in 2012 for her long and distinguished career in public office. “Employment in the Research Park has reached 1,798 jobs at an average salary in excess of $87,000 and that represents a huge economic impact to Boca Raton and its surrounding communities,” said Whelchel. “The potential to help guide the ResearchPark to new sustainable growth is very exciting for me, and serving on the Authority will advance those efforts.” “We are fortunate to have former mayor Whelchel on the Florida Atlantic Research and Development Authority,” said Bruce Rosetto, Chair of the Research Park. “She is knowledgeable about the strengths of the Research Park, having played a pivotal role in helping the Park grow from her position of leadership in Boca Raton. Our Authority looks forward to her guidance as we implement our strategic plan for the future.”

Why No Smiling In The ‘Olden Days’? As an expert on old photographs, I am often asked why people were not smiling in old photos. There are actually three theories. The first is that shutter speeds for cameras in photography’s early days were long due of slow film speeds, so people had to hold still for a number of seconds. The second theory is that dental hygiene was not good, so people did not want to show unsightly teeth. The first answer is somewhat true, but the second probably is not. There is a third possible explanation, most likely the real reason: To smile in a photograph was considered in poor taste. Here is a quote about that line of thinking from more than 300 years ago. “There are some people who raise their upper lip so high...that their teeth are almost entirely visible. This is entirely contradictory to decorum, which forbids you to allow your teeth to be uncovered, since nature gave us lips to conceal them.” - Jean-Baptiste De La Salle, The Rules of Christian Decorum and Civility, 1703. That is quite a statement. It sounds so contrary to our 21stcentury way of looking at the photographic grin. Thankfully, times change as so do styles of photography. Now it is rare, particularly in Western cultures, to see a photo of someone not smiling - especially if they want to look their best. This led me to wonder what is it that most commonly makes people smile, whether a camera is present or not. Certainly good humor can prompt a smile; just try laughing without smiling. Your face might explode! We smile when we see people we care for; when babies and little animals do cute things; when we see a captivating piece of art; listen to a rousing musical performance; see our favorite team score at the end of the game to salvage victory from certain

defeat; or receive a special surprise gift. We also smile when we receive a promotion at work, celebrate the formalizing of an important contract, or realize we have done something to enhance the life of another person. Did you know the word “smile” does not appear in formal translations of the Scriptures? In a Bible concordance, it goes directly from “smelling” to “smite.” Not a single “smile.” That does not mean God is opposed to smiling. There is no mention of smiling, but words like “laugh,” “laughing” and “laughter” are used 40 times. And we must assume if there was laughing going on, smiles were happening as well. Laughing is not always presented in a happy way. Speaking about people conspiring to rebel against God, Psalm 2:4 states, “The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.” Another time, however, laughter resulted in one of the biggest smiles in history. Sarah, the aging wife of Abraham, had given up hope of having a child. Then God promised them she would become a mother, and when their son, Isaac, was born, she said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me” (Genesis 21:6). Isaac, in Hebrew, means “laughter” or “he who laughs.” Most often the Bible speaks of joy, which we might consider “smiling on the inside,” even when things happening around us are unpleasant. James 1:3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” So we can smile inwardly in adversity, trusting it will work for our ultimate good and help us to grow spiritually.

Guns on the Barbie? A couple of days ago I caught a flash on my computer’s internet news page that a Georgia public school in an Atlanta suburb had been invaded by yet another crazy SOB with an AK47. Having three grandchildren attending school in that general vicinity I started flipping from one new source to another, finally, about a minute later I learned that the school involved was not that of my Savannah, Shana, or Rebecca. Over the last few days the culprit was described as a mentally sick young man who had borrowed or stolen a friend’s AK47 (doesn’t everyone have one or want one?) He had entered to office section of the school with his gun and 498 bullets. Fortunately he was quickly discovered and did not have the skills he could have gained by attending one of the many NRA endorsed gun range facilities located within a few miles of any home in suburban America. Since this sick puppy had not bought the gun at a licensed store or less regulated weekend gun show there was no law which could have identified him as a crazy with an AK47 and a wish to kill children he did not even know, and with whom had no gripe. So there is no “All American” way to protect our children, elderly parents, or ourselves from a nut or a deranged jealous husband from killing our loved

ones and friends with equal abandon. Let’s become Australians! Australia, the closest doppelganger to our own Wild West culture; where men were men and women carried guns too. (Note the past tense.) This gun toting country/continent had banned guns, state by state. On April 28, 1996, six weeks after John Howard was elected Prime Minister, Martin Bryant, a psychologically disturbed man, used a semiautomatic Armalite rifle and a semiautomatic SKS assault weapon to kill 35 people in a murderous rampage in Port Arthur, Tasmania. Within a couple of years, not without objection, gun ownership was virtually banned from coast to coast in this country of large metropolitan areas separated by rural frontiers larger than our own. Gun deaths by murder, accident, and suicide plummeted into oblivion. Are we to be denied this safe alternative because of the intentional misinterpretation of a badly written portion of our otherwise lovely Constitution and a very profitable business disguised as a not for profit, the NRA? There seems no way to adopt the Australian solution, but we can put some more shrimp on the barbie, and open a cold one as we await the next massacre at our own neighborhood school.

Entrepreneur of the Year Awarded to Daniel Cane

By Stephanie Cornwell

CEO and Co-founder of Modernizing Medicine Inc., Daniel Cane was named the Entrepreneur of the Year in the Florida region’s Emerging category. Modernizing Medicine Inc. is the creator of the Electronic Medical Assistant (EMA), a cloud-based, iPad native electronic medical record (EMR) system. Modernizing Medicine was created in 2010 by Cane and Michael Sherling, MD, MBA, the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer, with the goal of developing a more efficient means to record and analyze patient information in a mobile, fast and effective way. EMA was designed by practicing physicians,

and is used by over 5,000 physicians today, 50,000 users in total. After graduation from Cornell University in 1997, Cane co-founded Blackboard Inc., an educational technology company. When asked why he decided to create EMA, Cane stated that “My next challenge was in healthcare, I wanted to increase patient outcome.” By eliminating piles of paperwork in a doctor’s office, and using this touch-based application, finding a patient’s records becomes much easier. This allows for more time and more clear communication between patient and doctor. Modernizing Medicine has 18 physicians training users to program EMA. When explaining the simplicity of the system, Cane states that his own children know how to use it. EMA uses anatomy and visuals to help physicians make accurate diagnoses. The doctor can touch the part of the body on the screen and analyze where the problem originates. Cane states that EMA “Collects data and brings it to the forefront.” It allows physicians to compare notes, see trends and visualize information over time. EMA adapts for the specific field of practice of each physician. The categories offered include dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, urology and plastic surgery. Modernizing Medicine has lived up to the name, as it is changing the medical field and bettering the relationships between physicians and their patients.

“What makes Kyrobak so effective is the unique CPM technology it provides to muscles and joints. This specific type of motion reduces inflammation and sends important signals to the nervous system to restore muscle tone, balance and blood supply.” DR STEVEN GEANOPULOS, CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGIST

On Saturday, June 13, 2015, a city resident observed a person working on the A/C unit of a home that was for sale. The resident approached the man and the suspect told him that he was changing the Freon. Since it appeared the suspect did not have the proper tools, the resident returned home and called the Boca Raton Police Services Department. While officers were responding, an off-duty Boca Raton Police officer spotted someone carrying A/C parts from another house listed for sale. This house was less than 1,000 feet from the previous location. When the off-duty Boca Raton officer asked the suspect what he was doing, he quickly jumped into his black pickup truck and fled the area. A Boca Raton patrol officer was able to recover a fingerprint from the A/C unit at one of the crime scenes. The print

belonged to Mitchell Hatfield. A check of records confirmed Hatfield drove a back Silverado pickup truck, the same vehicle seen by both the resident and the off-duty Boca Raton Police officer. Detectives checked a property database and found that in the last year, Hatfield sold nearly $50,000 worth of scrap metal, including A/C parts. Boca Raton Police investigators, working with the Palm Beach South Metro Task Force and BSO, were able to catch Hatfield stealing more A/C parts on Thursday, June 18, 2015. The off-duty Boca Raton officer and resident who witnessed the thefts were able to positively identify Hatfield as the person they observed stealing the A/C parts. Hatfield has been charged with two counts of Burglary, two counts of Grand Theft and two counts of Criminal Mischief.

Busy Night in Boca Yields Multiple Arrests In a one-hour timeframe Thursday evening, officers with the Boca Raton Police Services Department netted four suspects who were arrested for multiple charges, including armed robbery and burglary. Shortly before 8:00 pm, officers responded to 21170 St. Andrews Blvd, for reports of an armed robbery. When they arrived on scene, they met with the two female victims who said they were standing in front of First Watch talking when they were approached by the suspect armed with a knife. The suspect demanded the women turn over their purses, while he grabbed one bag. That’s when both females began screaming. The suspect, who took off running, was quickly located by a Boca Raton Police officer hiding behind a building a short distance away. George Kadera was charged with Armed Robbery and Aggravated Assault. Just before 8:30 pm, officers responded to 298 NE 23rd Street after a resident, who was walking his dog, saw a SUV backed

into his neighbor’s driveway. After passing the house, he decided to return to investigate. The witness heard the sound of glass breaking and quickly returned home to call 911. Responding officers saw two males walking away from the front door of the house. Anthony Dixon and Harold Fabre were both arrested and charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief and Obstructing an Officer. Thirty minutes later, the Boca Raton Public Safety Communications Center received word that officers from Delray Beach were following a stolen car that entered Boca Raton. Officers from Delray Beach said the driver lost control of the car and fled on foot around 300 East Yamato. With assistance from a Delray Beach K-9 team, the suspect was found inside the Advent Lutheran School. Besides facing charges in Delray Beach, Lyndsey Kennedy was charged by Boca Raton Police with Burglary to a Structure.

Fantastic Five! Men’s Golf Starting Fort Lauderdale Strikers Marcelin Five Named PING All-America Named to Haiti’s Gold Cup Squad

Lynn University's historic men's golf season added another record with the announcement of all five starting members of the squad as Division II PING All-America selections on Tuesday. First Team honoree Mateo Gomez was joined by second teamer Keith Greene, third team honoree Jose Miranda and honorable mention selections Martin Cancino and Elliott Whitley. The Fighting Knights led all schools with the five selections, followed by the national champion Nova Southeastern Sharks with four. This is the fourth time a school has earned five picks since 2013. This marks the first time in program history five members were honored as an All-American, breaking the previous record of three set in 1987 and matched in 2006 and 2011. The Fighting Knights also set records for total top-10 finishes (26) and spring stroke average (72.99) and was second with a 289.71 overall average team round. Additionally, Lynn won three tournaments, claimed the 2015 Sunshine State Conference Championship and closed out the season as the 2015 NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, the third time in the last five years. "I am very proud of all the student-athletes on our squad and it shows a great degree of consistency throughout our lineup to have all five starters named to the All-America team," said head coach Andrew Danna. "These awards are a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the year. This is something these five guys will always be able to share with one another years down the road when they look back on their collegiate experiences." Gomez, a sophomore out of Cali, Colom-

bia, made an immediate impact after his arrival in January. He took medalist honors in the first tournament he participated in, the Titan Winter Invitational, and logged six top-10 finishes in eight events, including individual runner-up at the national championship. Gomez led the team with a 71.77 stroke average, which is the second-lowest in program history, and was also named to the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team. Greene closes out his career as one of eight two-time All-America selections in program history, joining Peter Cherry (1985 & 1987), Ralph Garofano (1987-88), Henrik Nystromg (1993-94), Andrew Farmer (199596), Keir McNicoll (2005-06), Hoyt McGarity (2005-06) and Daniel Young (2011-13). The Debary, Fla., product was second on the team with a 72.76 stroke average and led the squad with eight top-10 finishes, third most for a single season at Lynn. Greene also leaves with the third-lowest career stroke average in school history (73.14). Miranda was third on the Fighting Knights with a career-best 73.36 stroke average and four top-10 finishes. The native of Quito, Ecquador, earned Sunshine State Conference All-Championship accolades by tying for third at the SSC Championship and then collected NCAA All-National Tournament recognition by tying for 10th individually. Cancino and Whitley round out the starting five. The duo was key during Lynn's run towards the national finals with Cancino tying for 14th at the national championship. Whitley improved his overall match-play record to 4-0 with three victories to lower his stroke average to 73 overall, good for third on the team.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers midfielder James Marcelin has been named to the Haiti national team’s 23-man roster for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The tournament kicks off with Haiti facing Panama in the opening match on July 7, at 7 p.m. EDT at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. “This is a great honor for James and a big opportunity for him to compete against the top nations in the region,” said Strikers General Manager Amaury Nunes. “We are proud of his accomplishments and know James will represent the Strikers and the NASL well.” Marcelin, 28, has participated in two previous Gold Cups with Haiti. He was the youngest member of Haiti’s Gold Cup squad in 2007, just 19 at the start of the tournament. Marcelin also participated in

the 2009 edition, scoring a goal in Haiti’s 2-0 victory against Grenada where he was also recognized as Man of the Match. “It’s always an honor to represent my country on the field,” said Marcelin. “I’m very excited to compete in the Gold Cup again and help Haiti go far in the competition.” The 6-foot-2 defensive midfielder has earned more than two dozen caps for Haiti. Marcelin’s last appearance came as a second-half substitute against Chile in an international friendly at the Strikers’ Lockhart Stadium on September 9, 2014. Marcelin has made seven appearances in competitive matches for the Strikers in 2015, leading the team with three assists. He made 15 appearances, all starts, for the Strikers in 2014 as the club reached the NASL Championship Final.
