Community Boca Teacher Among 7 STEM Educator Awarded Summer Externships
By CRA News Service A Boca Raton teacher is among seven Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) educators who will work side-by-side with knowledgeable and skilled industry employees to help bring the classroom curriculum to life. Jacklyn Carryl from West Boca Raton High School will join the other teachers in the month-long paid externship with five corporations. Carryl will work on creating and implementing earth space and astronomy/climatology programs at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Carryl could not be reached for comment. However Keith Oswald, the district’s interim Chief Academic Officer, said it is crucial that the district’s STEM curriculum matches what is happening in the real world. “This program will give our teachers important experiences that they can bring back to their classes and to their colleagues, as well as strengthen the relationships between these businesses and our schools,” Oswald said in a news release. The externships will provide the educators with the exposure to answer questions about real-world application, prepare students for careers they may have in the future, and improve educational experiences, officials said. The STEM Externship Program, which begins Monday, July 6, is a joint partnership between the district and STEM businesses. Teachers will work 20 full-time days for a minimum of $150 a day, paid by the companies, on a variety of projects – from helping to establish Florida Power & Light’s Manatee Education Center in Riviera Beach to working with Florida Crystals’ agricultural researchers. The teachers also will work with men-
tors from Palm Beach State College and Florida Atlantic University to help them incorporate the lessons from their externships into their classroom lessons. The other educators are: • Julius Guerra of Boynton Beach High School. Guerra will work with Florida Power & Light’s Information Management team, working with managers and learning about the company’s technology related to cyber security, wind business and network applications • Dax Pacells of Forest Hill High School. He will be analyzing workers’ compensation data for use in products, services and research with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) • Lorraine Plageman of Jupiter High School who will work with Lockheed Martin on modeling efforts on local government contracts • William Rubin of Pahokee High School. Rubin will work with PhDs and agricultural researchers at Florida Crystals • Rebecca Stanek of Royal Palm Beach High School. She will work with FPL’s Environmental Services group on the company’s new Manatee Viewing Center, and • Amena Warrayat of Forest Hill High School. Warrayat will work with NCCI’s Financial Planning & Analysis group, which provides corporate budgeting, forecasting and operational analysis for all areas of NCCI. The STEM Externship Program is the brainchild of the Palm Beach County STEM Education Council, which is comprised of local businesses, representatives from Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach Atlantic University and Palm Beach State College, community members and district employees. The program is modeled after a similar effort in Iowa.
Group of Del Prado Students Help Underprivileged Kids
(l-r) Shelly Ballaish, Roma Parsare, Ariel Ballaish, Hanbi Splindler, Mary Ensor (Children’s Home Society of Florida resource development specialist) and Richard Splindler Everyone wants to help the world, but making a positive change is not always easy. When a human being is able to overcome their selfish instincts, and better their communities, it is a remarkable thing. This is even more remarkable when a class of 4th graders do it. Hanbi is a rising 5th grader at Del Prado Elementary School, where she is working to help underprivileged children. Mrs. Singh, Hanbi’s teacher, assigned her 4th grade class the Light Warrior Project- a project designed to have students give back to their community. Hanbi, along with her two classmates, Shelly and Roma, decided to sell homemade bracelets and charms, in an attempt to raise money for the Children’s Home Society of Florida. The Children’s Home Society is dedicated to helping neglected and abused children find support, security, love and guidance. What started with some Polymer clay and a good idea, quickly turned into a determined effort to raise as much money as they could before the school year came to a close. Hanbi began spending at least two hours every day after school crafting, baking, cooling and glazing charms. This was not a short process, and many of the charms would come out broken or cracked, making 10-year-old Hanbi have to repair or remake several charms. After Hanbi would finish a batch of charms, the job would be passed to Shelly and Roma, who would fashion the charms onto bracelets. The sales began at school, where the girls would collect $.50 per bracelet. After witnessing how popular the product was, the students decided to start selling on the weekends too. Going door-to-door, the girls were very successful in sales, often selling more than

one bracelet per person. Many customers gave donations for the cause, some ranging up to $20.00. Hanbi’s siblings, Richard and Ariel, also helped the girls in the selling process. This process went from mid-April to the end of the school year in early June. As Hanbi’s mother made the arrangements to meet Mary Ensor, the Resource Development Specialist at the CHS in Ft. Lauderdale, Hanbi and her siblings collected their gently used books and clothing to donate, along with the money raised. According to Ensor, some of the children that come into the Children’s Home Society live in extreme poverty. Having things of their own helps them feel safer in an uncontrollable situation. Ensor states that Hanbi and her friends “Went above and beyond” with their contribution to the organization. The students put a lot of detail into their work and are very interested to know how they are helping to make a difference. On June 2, 2015, Hanbi and her friends were able to present a check for $320, books, clothing, and a box of bracelets made as a gift for the neglected and/or abused children. Ensor told Hanbi that the money raised would go towards the children’s therapy, safety and education. “The $320 will go towards the funding of the key services and programs that work to end the cycle of abuse and neglect” says Ensor. “What we give to them is a hope that there is something good in life.” Said Hanbi in an essay she penned for her classmates. In addition to Hanbi and her friends, other groups in her class held car washes and lemonade stands, donating all the proceeds to several animal shelters and foundations for different illnesses. After Crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, it is Poignant to know the History Behind the Name By Breathtaking, chilling and awesome. Those are the top adjectives that come to mind as I describe my feeling after walking across the infamous Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., a few days ago. While taking a group of students to the Tech Village and Youth Hackathon at Essence Festival in New Orleans, we stopped at the civil rights landmark on Sunday. This was one of several stops in seven cities across the South where we toured local cultural heritage landmarks, historical civil rights sites and historically black colleges on our 10-day field trip. Sitting behind the bus driver, my heart skipped a beat as I saw the welcome sign upon entering the city limits of Selma. I was overcome with emotion. It
was as if my spirit dropped. All I kept thinking was: the day finally arrived when I would visit the disdain city – the city where more than 600 non-violent protesters were attacked by Alabama state troopers as they tried to march from Selma to Montgomery for voting rights. As I walked across the span, the thoughts from Director Ava DuVernay's film Selma kept popping up in my mind. I pictured the racist Dallas County sheriff Jim Clark firing his pistol and ordering mounted deputies and state troopers to advance, I thought about the men and women coughing and the trampling hoofs on them as they tried to run in the cloud of tear gas. I became angry – not at the perpetuators because they did not know any
better. However, I was angry at those people of color today who fail to acknowledge the sacrifices, clubbing and beatings taken so that we can have the freedom we enjoy today. In what seemed like a split of a second, we stopped traffic, moved quickly into the street for a photo shoot then went back on the sidewalk, two-a-breast. It appeared the motorists who had stopped understood. It felt so powerful. There is a movement brewing across the state on whether they should rename the bridge the Journey to Freedom Bridge. Until earlier this year when the world watched as approximately 40,000 crossed the bridge for the 50th anniversary of the Celebration of Bloody Sunday - the Selma to Montgomery civil
rights march - many knew the name but few knew who Edmund Pettus was. On Sunday, most of us learned he was a lawyer, a general in the Confederate army, a U. S. Senator and Grand Dragon of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan who used his positions to deny blacks from voting in the late 1800's and early 1900's. His terrorist organization terrorized Catholics and Jews and also killed, maimed, and terrorized blacks for nearly a century. After this experience, I think the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights march should not be limited to an occasional article in the news but should be an integral part of the curriculum in our public schools. After all, the event played a pivotal role in shaping the America we live in today.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
A Map For Your Treasure Hunt! Many people dream of reaching a mountain top for the opportunities they anticipate finding there. Yet, they may not realize that the greatest treasures available to them can easily be found near to where they already are, if not inside them and their fellows. Climbing to a mountain top provides a great experience in the exercise of the discipline of reaching the peak. Once there, it also affords an awesome sight of distant places which can be viewed only from that altitude. Yet, normally that’s it! Once at the top, you can’t move any higher. The same corresponds to much that is buried at sea! You may get to the bottom of the ocean but not beyond that limit! Before attempting to move farther in your daily routines, you still have other available
options, whichever way you turn. At the very top, however, you are stuck, unless you desire to descend from the mountain and return to where you dwelt before. It is inside and below the earth that gold, diamonds, and other precious items are hidden; it is by digging deeply that you can extract them from the ground, and enhance their value through what you do with them. But these are not the only treasures for you to consider! It is from where you are already placed, that you can make a lasting difference in lives you seek to influence, and in the society you attempt to impact through your varied efforts. Your own life also depends on others round about you. Sir John Marks Templeton, reflected that “the real wealth of a nation does not come
from mineral resources but from what lies in the minds and hearts of its people.” With individuals it is also the same: the most valuable treasures of life are not exclusively external to human creatures; they often are found within; they just need to be mined, refined, and utilized for the benefit of many, besides one’s personal thrill! With such understanding, whoever acts in this fashion is most fortunate indeed! There’s nothing demeaning about residing in a valley, if that is where you are supposed to be and to excel! I am reminded of a story about a very poor, crippled man, who spent all his adult life as a daily beggar, at a road corner in a village of his native country. After his death, the terrain where he had sat as a mendicant was
discovered to be rich in fuel. From that site much oil was pumped, generating endless wealth to the land owner. Yet, the man of the story lived and died a pauper! More important to recognize, however, is that the true riches of life are not monetary in nature. They are the family to which you belong, the friendships you develop and cultivate, the people in whom you invest yourself, the knowledge you acquire, the faith you embrace and in which you grow! Indeed, you need not go too far, neither to the depths of the sea, nor too high, in a treasure hunt; your most valuable resources may be found just where you are, as gifts of grace from the Almighty!

Clive Daniel Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony For New Home Showroom
Mark Butters, Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth, Jeremy Rodgers, Mayor Susan Haynie, Daniel Lubner, Clive Lubner & Malcolm Butters
By Aaron Tefel
Clive Daniel held a ceremonial event on June 23, 2015 in recognition for the new home showroom they are opening in Boca Raton. This new store, which will be located at 1351 Boca Raton Boulevard, is Clive Daniel’s second operation and will hold the distinction of being the first store to be located on the east coast, where the original is based in Naples. Clive Daniel’s Boca Raton home showroom plans on opening its doors in early 2016. Malcolm Butters, CEO of Butters Construction and Development (the company that is tasked with building the new Clive Daniels furniture showroom), spoke about how he feels about the new store and how its location in the Boca Raton area will be crucial to its success. “We are really excited,” Butters said. “This is the largest retail project for Boca Raton and it ties in nicely with the building boom going on currently in Downtown Boca. The new store will tie in the residential and commercial really well and serve Boca homeowners for their furnishing needs.” Butters also talked about how Clive Daniels isn’t your typical furniture store and how its sets itself apart from the competition. “I think Clive Daniels will do really well,” Butters said. “It is contemporary and very stylish. People from all around the Palm Beach area will definitely like it as it is very reminiscent of furniture stores in the Design District in Miami or other luxury stores in New York and Los Angeles. It definitely
stands out from the competition.” Daniel Lubner, President and CEO of Clive Daniel Home, also talked about why opening a store in Boca Raton was a must. “Opening a store in Boca Raton was never an ‘if ’ but simply a ‘when’,” Lubner said. “We have stayed very close to the developers, builders, and design community. Boca is literally our second home and we look forward to being able to get back to being a regular part of the community.” Lubner went on to shed light on why he believes Clive Daniel Home is a unique establishment. “We have a total home approach to our interior design services,” Lubner said. “The 70,000 square foot space is much more than a furniture showroom. It’s more of a design emporium. We will have the most eclectic assortment of the country’s finest manufacturers. We will also have vintage furniture, architectural salvage, flooring, lighting, kitchens, high end gift boutique and the finest rug collection in the state. What makes us really special is our focus on interior design.” According to a press release from Clive Daniel Home, the $12 million facility will employ about 65 people, which includes 25 professional interior designers and the inclusion of the company’s Hospitality Division. This new store is planned to be the “springboard” for additional expansion on Florida’s east coast, where Lubner said that there are currently plans for future stores, but they will not act on them until the Boca Raton store is fully operational.
West Boca’s Fresh Bites Cafe Represents Lite, Healthy Eating Walking into That’s a Wrap, customers would enter what seemed to resemble a New York city subway station, with the intention of getting a quick, filling and affordable meal. While the meal selections at That’s a Wrap were extensive, the people eating there had a common craving- fresh, healthy food. What was once the local sandwich, wrap and salad shop known as That’s a Wrap, has changed its angle to a more modern healthfood eatery- Fresh Bites Cafe. The restaurant is located in Mission Bay, on Glades Road and State Road 7. When Fresh Bites Cafe, formerly known as That’s a Wrap first moved into town in 2011, many people were surprised it became so successful, due to its neighbors being a similarly health-minded establishment, Panera Bread. However, according to customer reviews, while Panera Bread began to feel more corporate, Fresh Bites Cafe offered a unique feel, flexible menu and fresh flavors. John Cibotti , Owner of Fresh Bites Cafe, explains that most of their customers are health-conscious. By making the atmosphere brighter and more colorful, “the response has been overwhelmingly positive.” Cibotti says that changing the name of the restaurant “lends itself to the food.” “The name That’s a Wrap made customers assume that the menu’s focus was on wraps, forgetting that there are healthier and organic options as well,” added Cibotti Fresh Bites believes in natural, homemade ingredients. Protein options such as chicken
and turkey are roasted fresh everyday. The recent installment of a Tower Garden has allowed the growing of fresh herbs such as basil, mint and parsley in the restaurant, allowing customers to see. There are no processed ingredients in any of the meals, and there are no longer unhealthy sides, such as potato chips. Along with the name changing from That’s a Wrap to Fresh Bites Cafe, the menu’s variety has grown. Fresh Bites Cafe now offers breakfast all day, every day. Breakfast options range from bagel sandwiches, protein shakes and turkey bacon, to a hardey bowl of greek yogurt, fresh fruit and raw honey. The most popular breakfast item includes organic spinach, feta cheese, egg whites and optional avocado. Fresh Bites Cafe’s lunch and dinner menu includes an array of specialty options. Customers can order from the menu, or create their own salad, wrap or sandwich. Soups are available as well. Being that Fresh Bites’ menu is so flexible, Fitness trainer and life coach, Andrea Hammer intends to guide customers in their daily food choices, by periodically holding nutrition and fitness seminars at the Fresh Bites Cafe restaurant. The next seminar will be held on July 10 at 6:00 pm. By offering delivery services, Fresh Bites has been able to reach people beyond the West Boca Raton area. The restaurant plans to open another location in the spring of 2016, although the destination has not yet been disclosed.

A Magnificent “Testament of Youth”
Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley
Boice-Zucaro Celebration
Oh what a night it was! Yvonne and Al Zucaro threw one of the best events of the 2015 season to celebrate Yvonne receiving a doctorate degree from Frankin Pierce University, the Zucaro’s Sixth Wedding Anniversary and Al’s 66th Birthday, not to mention Yvonne’s appointment by Gov. Rick Scott to the Florida Film Commission. Over 215 of the Zucaro’s friends including many dignitaries enjoyed a cocktail party followed by a sit down dinner in the lounge of Chauteaubriand or Salmon and
Skip Sheffield
then all guests were whisked off for the show George M. After the show the cast sang “Happy Birthday” to Al and a huge cake was brought on stage. Guests were moved into the lounge for champagne and cake and were entertained by Yvonne’s cousins, Karl Jurman, Director of the Lion King and his beautiful talented wife, Mary D’Arcy Jurman who was the original Christine in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Such a very special evening.

“Testament of Youth” is one magnificent movie. That’s not an adjective I often use, but “Testament of Youth” is something special. A movie this grand, this epic, this sweeping and emotionally engaging does not come along often. The clincher is the story is real; based on the autobiography of Vera Brittain as adapted by Juliette Towhidi (“Calendar Girls”). Vera Brittain is played by Alicia Vikander, the gorgeous Swedish actress who was so haunting as the robot girl in “Ex Machina.” Vikander is 27, but with her slim, slight figure she is quite believable as the headstrong teenager she plays as the story begins in 1914 at the outset of World War I. Vera comes from a wealthy, upper-class British family. Her father (Dominic West) has bought her an expensive grand piano. When he asks her to play something on it she plays a few bars then abruptly stops and storms out. Vera doesn’t want to be “bullied” by performing for her family. She is more focused on getting into Oxford University. Dad is not keen on the idea, but Vera has a way of getting what she wants. Director James Kent begins the story Nov. 11, 1918 during the tumultuous celebration of Armistice Day signaling the end of World War I. The character we come to
know as Vera seems deeply troubled, but we do not know why. The scene then immediately flashes back to an idyllic summer day in the countryside four years previous, when Vera and the three boys closest to her are frolicking by a lake. The boys are her brothers Edward (Taron Egerton) and Victor (Colin Morgan) and family friend Roland Leighton (Kit Harrington). Despite vowing she would never be controlled by a man, Vera falls in love with Roland and they become engaged to be married. Meanwhile World War I is raging in Europe, and all three boys volunteer for military service. Vera does her part by dropping out of Oxford and volunteering as a Red Cross nurse in France. World War I was a horrific bloodbath, with an estimated 10 million killed, 20 million crippled or severely injured, 9 million children orphaned and 5 million women widowed. Despite the claim it was going to be “The war to end war,” the lesson was not learned. It still has not been learned. Vera Brittain went on to become a leading British author, feminist and pacifist. This is her story, wonderfully conveyed. Rating:

Serving A Vendor With A Helpful Rebuke Have you ever thought about the importance of constructive criticism, or a timely rebuke? Several years ago, a printer we had been using for some time delivered a project to my office that was intended to represent our organization visually to thousands of people. Upon reviewing the work, however, the colors failed to match what we had requested. They were not even close to our instructions. My tendency is to lean toward being a people-pleaser, so I struggled concerning what I should to do. “I don’t want to sound like a complainer,” I reasoned. “Maybe the colors are not that far off, and we can overlook the fact they are not an exact match.” My assistant at the time, however, did not share my struggle with being unwilling to hurt someone’s feelings. She knew what needed to be done. “We can’t send this out looking like this,” she asserted. “They will have to do the job again.” My assistant was right, of course. We had painstakingly chosen the colors for representing our organization and had accurately specified what we needed. And we were not doing the printer any favors by accepting substandard work. Rather than being concerned about offending the printing company, it was important for them to know when their services were not meeting expectations. Otherwise, how could they realize the need for taking corrective measures to ensure the quality of future work? Rather than taking offense, the printer appreciated being informed of the error and was quick to respond. The next day we received our project – it had been redone, looking much better. I was glad my assistant had the determination to hold the company, and me, accountable.
July 10 - July 16, 2015
Looking back on this situation, I realize I had forgotten some important biblical principles that apply to the value of providing correction when needed, whether for a vendor, an employee or even a customer: The gift of a rebuke. Telling someone, whether a fellow staff member, friend or supplier, that their work is not acceptable can be an act of kindness if done in the right spirit, intended not to demean but to help them in doing better in the future. “Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” (Proverbs 25:12). The obligation of a rebuke. If you find someone performing substandard work and fail to bring it to their attention, in effect you are participating in, even condoning their failure. “Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt” (Leviticus 19:17). The benefit of a rebuke. Many times it may seem hard to offer words of correction and rebuke, but if these help the individuals become more effective and productive in their work, the end result might be gratitude for our willingness to provide the constructive criticism. “He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue”(Proverbs 28:23). Rebuking a vendor in love – caring enough about that person, or company, to make them aware of falling short of your expectations – can result in affirming your own commitment to excellence, as well as theirs. Grand Old Opry Q I am the mother of a lovely 12-yearold young woman. Her father and I were never married but lived together for several years, before and after her birth. During our relationship I worked, and still work as a schoolteacher. He never worked. His father however, is a multi-millionaire who has a face and voice which everyone in the world would recognize as a Nashville based country and western recording star. During our relationship, the grandfather refused to recognize my daughter in any way, or have anything to do with her, perhaps because we are of a different race. However, on Christmas of each year, he would give his son a quarter million dollars for support for the next year. If emergencies would arise during the year, more money was available. No money was saved. I was told that no savings were necessary; his dad would always be there. A year ago he abandoned us for a younger woman, married her and another child is on the way. He kicked us out of his house, but rented a house for us, paid support, and kept our daughter in private school and sent her to camp last summer. Now that the school year is over, he says we are on our own. He says that he has no money, no income, no skills and never worked in his life. I have appealed to him and his father, who will not even acknowledge we exist. What are my rights? I can’t even afford a lawyer. A If you can prove the history of the grandfather’s regular giving through bank
records and testify about your knowledge of the lifestyle that you had enjoyed, you are likely to be very successful in obtaining child support, attorney’s fees and, perhaps, extra money for private school and summer camp. Florida case law allows that proof of regular substantial giving, under circumstances where it is very likely to continue, forms a basis for child support under Florida child support guidelines, which include money for extras such as private school and summer camp if usually provided. The gift income can also support an award of attorney’s fees and court costs. Keep in mind, however, that guidelines for child support is somewhat limited in amount. On the $250,000 tax-free gift income you mentioned, adjusted for your income, the guidelines support would be just under $2,000 a month. The school and camps may or may not be found affordable by a court. Health insurance for your daughter and some payment toward non-covered medical expenses might be provided, as well as some life insurance to secure the child support. On the facts you present I’m sure you can find competent counsel to take on your case. Michael H. Delray Police Encourage Residents to Join National Night Out By CRA News Service DELRAY BEACH -The Delray Beach Police Department is inviting residents to attend a neighborhood party on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to celebrate National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” Police officials are also encouraging residents to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights to show their support for this event and to spend the evening with their neighbors, community groups, public safety officers and their city officials at the Tennis Center, 201 W. Atlantic Ave. The free party will be from 7 to 10 p.m. “It’s not just for folks in the neighborhood,” Police Chief Jeffrey Goldman said. “It’s a great event for fun, friends and the community. The purpose is community awareness and to help bring the community together to eliminate crime and drug problems. If you don’t know your neighbors — this is a great opportunity to meet them.” This is the first year that the agency is participating in the annual community event, which is in its 32nd year nationwide. More than 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world participate in the event. Goldman said National Night Out is an excellent way to build neighborhood relationships and to strengthen police and community partnerships. Founded in 1984, National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime awareness and drug-prevention awareness • Promote involvement in crime prevention, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs • Strengthen neighborhood spirit • Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back Several communities have used the event as a tool to initiate local Neighborhood Watch groups and to get reacquainted with their neighbors. Most National Night Out parties become neighborhood potluck dinners, cookouts, ice cream socials, dessert parties and parades that last well into the evening. Some neighborhoods will host flashlight walks, safety fairs, poster and essay contests and neighborhood meetings. At the Delray Beach event, there will be activities, music, food and entertainment. Residents will also see police cars and there will be demonstrations from the SWAT team, K-9 officers, Traffic (motorcycle unit) and the Police Explorers. “While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination to help make neighborhoods a safer place year round,” Goldman said. “It is a wonderful opportunity for communities across the city to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie.”

sports Florida Launch Finishes Home Stand Strong with 19-9 Win
The Florida Launch concluded its threegame home stand on Friday, July 3 with a 19-9 rout of the Charlotte Hounds. The Launch has now won two-straight and ends with home stand with a 2-1 record to improve to 3-8, jumping over the Hounds in the standings who also have a 3-8 mark. The 10-point victory is the largest margin for the Launch in team history; Lyle Thompson also made history with a team-record seven goals with an assist for a career-high eight points. Kieran McArdle, Casey Powell and Connor Buczek all provided four points while Steven Brooks had three goals. Austin Kaut, making his first Launch start, earned the victory saving 18
shots on a 67 percent save percentage. Charlotte scored the opening goal of the contest off an unassisted shot from Mike Chanenchuk, not even two minutes later Brooks knotted the score 1-1 with an unassisted goal of his own. After 10 minutes of physical, scoreless action, L. Thompson found C. Powell with: 54 seconds left in the frame to give the Launch its first lead of the night followed quickly by another Brooks goal to end the first quarter with a 3-1 advantage. The Launch continued the momentum from the final minute of the previous quarter as Kieran McArdle scored his first goal of the night to extend the lead to three.

Shortly after, former Launch player Kevin Cunningham found Chanenchuk for his second goal of the night, cutting the deficit to two at 4-2. L. Thompson put the home side back up three with an unassisted goal. The Hounds brought their deficit back to two off a Terry Kimener goal score, making it a one point game off a power play goal from Chanenchuk with 7:50 left in the half. Looking to avoid a tied ballgame, L. Thompson scored his second unassisted goal of the game to put the Launch back up two and then scored another goal following the face-off win from Christopher Mattes to recreate the three-point advantage with 2:41 left in the half. The final score before the intermission came from McArdle, getting the feed from Powell following the slashing foul from Charlotte for the power play goal and making it an 8-4 contest. With its biggest deficit of the night heading into halftime, Charlotte scored the opening goal of the second half two minutes in off an unassisted goal from Mike Sawyer, with Jake Tripucka scoring as well to cut the Launch’s lead back to two with 9:40 left in the quarter. The Launch responded to the two-straight goals with a 5-0 run as Brooks scored the first score followed by back-toback power play goals by L. Thompson to put Florida up 11-6, capped off by reigning

Rookie of the Week Connor Buczek’s third two-point goal of the season. The final score of the quarter came from the Hounds as Chanenchuk scored off a pass from Sawyer with one minute left in the stanza. The Launch wasted no time in the final quarter, as Powell got a pass from PT Ricci 14 seconds into the quarter followed by Roman Lao-Gosney’s first goal of the night to put the home side up 15-7. McArdle joined the hat trick party in the third minute of the final frame, but his celebration was shortlived as Sankey scored for the Hounds 23 seconds later. L. Thompson continued to show his offensive prowess with his two more goals before the end of regulation, shortly followed by his brother Miles Thompson who put the Launch up 11 at 19-8. The final score of the game came from Wil Haus of Charlotte with 1:50 left to play as lighting in the area stopped action immediately after. The Launch and Hounds will play each other again on July 11 in Charlotte followed by a trip out West to Denver to face-off with the Outlaws on Sunday, July 19. Women’s Golf Trio Honored as WGCA All-American Scholars Lynn University women's golfers Jenny Ayala, Samantha Barber and Jessica Bradley were honored as Women's Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-Americans, as announced on Tuesday. This marks the fourth consecutive year, and seventh overall, with at least three selections for the Fighting Knights. Additionally, Bradley becomes only the second women's golfer in program history to be a four-time Scholar All-America honoree. The Sunshine State Conference earned 14 selections in total with Florida Tech leading the way with four picks and Barry and Lynn garnering three apiece. Nova Southeastern had two student-athletes honored while Rollins and Saint Leo gathered one each. Freshmen Ayala and Barber were also named to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and helped the Blue & White claim third place at the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship. Bradley's athletic honors are now complete as she joins Maha Haddioui as the only
four-year WGCA Scholar All-American in school history. Her resume also includes being a two-time WGCA National Player of the Year, two-time NCAA Division II National Champion, two-time SSC Woman's Golfer of the Year, two-time Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-American and a four-time All-SSC selection. The WGCA announced a total of 758 women's collegiate golfers were recognized as All-American Scholars. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics with the minimum cumulative GPA being a 3.50. Lynn finished the season third overall at the NCAA Division II National Championship and returns only two starters, Ayala and Barber. 2015 FAU Women’s Soccer Schedule Released
Florida Atlantic University Women’s Soccer Head Coach Patrick Baker announced his program’s 2015 schedule which features 20 matches, including four against first-time opponents. FAU’s slate includes eight home matches in Boca Raton. Fans may purchase tickets by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visiting FAUSports.com. The Owls lost three seniors from its 2014 squad, but return a plethora of talent to face a tough 2015 lineup. FAU opens Baker’s third season at the helm with four matches on the road including a pair of in-state contests and a two-match stint at national powerhouse Texas A&M. ““We are excited about the fall schedule and the different challenges it will present us,” Baker said. “The non-conference ultimately needs to prepare us for our Conference USA schedule, and the ten opponents we face will definitely do that this fall.” The Owls open the year at Stetson on Aug. 21 before a battle against North Florida on Aug. 23 in Jacksonville. FAU then takes its first of three trips to Texas to take on Sam Houston State and Texas A&M in College Station, hosted by the Aggies, who are coming off of an appearance in the College Cup in 2014. The Owls return home to host Miami on September 4 in a rematch of FAU’s 2-1 victory against the Hurricanes in Coral Gables last season. Following another trip to Jacksonville, FAU plays host to Southeast Missouri on Sept. 11 in a split weekend.
Two days later, the Owls square off against Brown in Rhode Island in another rematch of a 2014 FAU victory. FAU rounds out the non-conference slate with a road match at Texas Tech on Sept. 18 and a home battle against UC Irvine on Sept. 20. “We open 2015 conference play by hosting UTEP and UTSA September 25th and 27th,” Baker said. “We played both these teams on the road last year and barely squeezed a point out of a possible six points.” The following weekend, FAU returns to Texas to take on the 2014 C-USA title game contenders North Texas and Rice on Oct. 2 and Oct. 4, respectively. “These first four C-USA games will shape a lot for our team as we enter the midpoint of conference play,” Baker said. “We then return to Boca Raton for another big home double header weekend as FAU hosts LA Tech and Southern Mississippi. This weekend will have seen us play six of our 10 opponents and four of those six at home - a really important part of our schedule to get positive results.” The Owls go on the road once more for a single game at Marshall before returning to host UAB in their final home match on Oct. 23. FAU must battle for seeding in the C-USA Tournament with its final two games on the road at FIU and at Western Kentucky. “The past two years have seen so much on the line entering the final games of the season and this year will probably be no different,” Baker said. “Our last conference game will be at Western Kentucky and will be our first time playing them as a Conference USA opponent.” The 2015 C-USA Tournament will be held Nov. 2-8 in Miami, hosted by FIU. “Great opportunities await our team and we are looking to build upon the success of the spring season,” Baker said.
Strikers Appoint Caio Zanardi General Manager
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced Caio Zanardi as the team’s general manager. Strikers Managing Partner Ricardo Geromel made the announcement. Zanardi, who will oversee all soccer operations and the club’s youth academy program, replaces Amaury Nunes. “As I’ve said often, we have a talented team and have expectations of competing for a playoff spot,”said Geromel. “Caio has experience running all facets of the technical side of a soccer club. His hire represents the beginning of a new era, and his expertise will pay dividends on the pitch and help us reach our full potential.” The team also announced Ricardo Lopes will return to the Strikers’ bench. He will serve as goalkeepers coach under recently hired Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. Lopes had been with Fort Lauderdale from
the team’s NASL Modern Era start in 2011 and was part of Kronsteiner’s squad that made the 2014 NASL Championship Final. Zanardi comes to the Strikers after nearly three years working for Brazil’s national soccer federation (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol). Prior to his role at the highest level of Brazil’s soccer pyramid, Zanardi served six years as soccer director for Al-Nasr Sports Club, a top team in the United Arab Emirates. “While I was happy in Brazil, I couldn’t turn down this opportunity,” said Zanardi. “I believe in where the Strikers are going and I want to be a part of it.” Zanardi’s coaching credentials include an English FA International License, learning at the hands of renowned soccer coaches Fabio Capello, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Louis van Gaal and Carlo Ancelotti. Zanardi’s résumé includes time with Palmeiras, Audax/ Pão de Açucar - SP and Paulista de Jundiaí. In March, he led the Brazil’s Under-17 national team to the South American Football Championship, gaining automatic qualification for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Zanardi coached the Brazilian Under-17 team to a 16-5-1 (W-T-L) record in 22 matches.
