Questionable Policies at Brickyard By Aaron Tefel
Brickyard Restaurant and Micro Brewery seems to not be appeasing all of its customers due to certain restrictive policies and a lack of customer service. Brickyard, which is located at the Garden Shops at Boca near Powerline Road and Palmetto, serves 50 beers on tap, as well as having a full bar, and serving a variety of items raging from duck tacos to flat bread pizza. The restaurant boasts “Happy Hour from open to close everyday”, attracting not only working adults but college students with their competitive prices, making them a “hot sport” in Boca Raton. continue on page 3

Community Questionable Policies at Brickyard Bring to Question Its Restaurant Atmosphere
Continue from page 1
However, many customers whom been at Brickyard feel the complete opposite. Currently boasting a 2.7 stars out of 5 on Google reviews, the establishment gets many complaints from customers regarding management and service. One reviewer claims, “I only gave this place one star because I could not rate it any lower.” Gabe Ushi, the reviewer, goes on to talk
about his Brickyard experiences from one night where he and his teammates went to the establishment for food and drinks. His night started off in the wrong foot when employees told him his party could not have more than 10 people, which Ushi found odd, especially since the restaurant but brushed it off. Once Ushi and his friends were finished, the nightmare began. Without asking, a
waitress handed them their check, and broke down when she thought a tip was too low. The waitress created such a fuss, that management called the cops on Ushi and his friends, despite Ushi explaining he was actually tipping the waitress in cash, which seemed to fall on deaf ears. “There are plenty of places within a 10-minutes drive that are well worth your business,” says Ushi. Another facet of criticism for Brickyard deals with its restrictive “No Sleeves” policy. Janet Le Grand Rice, who dealt with the establishment’s no tank tops and cut offs policy, spoke to the Tribune about her family’s experience at the restaurant. “We went to Brickyard on a weekday before five,” explains Le Grand Rice. “While we were waiting to be seated, and employs kept staring at us. He ended up coming up to us and saying we were not allowed to be served because my son was wearing a tank top. Le Grand Rice’s son suffers from Type 1 Diabetes and tends to overheat; therefore Le Grand Rice buys him “sleeveless shirts that look dressy” with no excessive imagery
Two Seasoned Educators to Serve in School District’s Top Posts By Don Stephens
Superintendent Robert M. Avossa’s has hired two veteran educators to serve as his top administrators. David W. Christiansen, the chief academic officer for Lake County Schools since January 2014, has been named as deputy superintendent/chief of schools. He will oversee the district’s area superintendents and schools. Keith Oswald, who had been serving as interim chief academic officer, has been named to the position permanently. He will oversee the district’s assistant superintendents and shape the district’s academic programming. “These positions are critical as we develop and execute an effective strategic plan for the future of the school district,” Avossa said in a news release. “I am confident that David and Keith will provide the leadership this district needs to ensure success for Palm Beach County students.” For more than two decades, Christensen has worked with a diverse group of students and teachers, according to the news release. He has overseen the creation of curriculum initiatives and high-quality professional development programs for teachers, the release said. He also successfully implemented a turnaround plan for one of the lowest-performing high schools in the state of Florida, district officials said. Under his watch, the Lake County schools
district officials added about 60 teacher assistants in their schools for small-group instruction. Those teaching assistants received 54 hours of training at the elementary level, he said according to published reports. Earlier this year, Christiansen lost his bid for school superintendent in Indian River and Brevard counties. Prior to Lake County, he was an associate superintendent in Fresno, California, and a principal and teacher in Orange County. “My background, experience and results show a focus on equity and access in serving all stakeholders with integrity, courage, honesty, transparency and grace,” Christiansen said in the release. Oswald has served the School District of Palm Beach County for nearly two decades, working in numerous roles including teacher, assistant principal, principal and district administrator. As an administrator, he oversaw the implementation of the new Florida Standards and a new Student Code of Conduct. And as the interim chief academic officer, he is credited with building relationships with universities and community organizations to bring resources and services to Palm Beach County students. “I’m extremely excited about this strategic move for the School District,” Oswald said in the release. “This provides better support for our schools, which will result in improved outcomes for our students.”
or prints on them, in an effort to spare him discomfort. The family was denied entry simply because their son was wearing a cut-off shirt on the day they went. Additionally, Le Grand Rice noted that there were women at Brickyard that day who were wearing way less clothes than her son was, yet there was no problem and they were allowed to be in the establishment. She said that there was no dress code policy at the door when they looked as well. The manager, who told the family they would have to leave if the boy couldn’t “cover up” did not apologize to them after they explained to them their son’s situation. “There was no apology, I would have written to the manager but once I realized that was him, and realized he had no backbone and had to hide against his adult policies being enforced on a child, I knew it wouldn’t have made a difference what I said,” Le Grand Rice states. “I would never return there, even if it was for free.” Brickyard management was unable to be reached, despite numerous attempts by The Boca Raton Tribune to comment on these incidents.

EDITORIAL By C. Ron Allen
The Relevance of Free Community Newspapers This month, we in the newspaper business are observing Free Community Paper Month. And while journalists often focus on telling the stories of others, it is important that we recognize our accomplishments and share our milestones with you - our readers. For thousands of years, societies have recognized the importance of posting news for the public. Government agencies in the Roman Empire would scrawl notices and declarations on a large whitewashed board in the lead. Shortly after the invention of moveable type, Westerners began printing the news. The development of newspapers has happened in a free and profit-driven society. It’s not surprising that the first “newspapers” were advertising notices. Were you aware that letters to the editor and press releases are the oldest items in the newspaper? It was not until about 200 years ago that we began reporting and presenting the news in a professional and organized format that we
now know. That ended the old and dangerous practice of gathering news – by rumor, hearsay, gossip and letters. That was when society became more literate and newspapers’ circulation skyrocketed. In this Internet age, there are varied channels one can get information. However, in cities like Boca Raton and Delray Beach, the Tribune is still the best source for local news. It has been five years now since the Boca Raton Tribune began providing you a slice of what happens in City Hall, what is in the police blotter and what your neighbors are talking about. We have made a great investment in this community and this industry to do so. And while all across the United States, newspapers are hemorrhaging, thanks to our loyal advertisers, this publication continues to carry out its mantra of providing accurate, timely news that matter. Let’s face it, people read their local papers for the advertisements and flyers as well as the news reports. When you want to
know what sales or events are going on in the area, you turn to you community newspaper. Community businesses need the paper to advertise effectively to their target audience. After all, a small business in Boca Raton or Delray Beach isn’t going to want to advertise their services to all of Palm Beach County because their target audience is only within this community. The publishing industry of free community papers and newspapers, comprised of both small and large publication, is an important element in local communities throughout this nation. Collectively, these publications disseminate important information to more than 50 million homes each week. The Tribune and other hometown publications are original and enduring hyper-local medium, carrying the torch of democracy as the town crier, fixed in print and shared with neighbors free of charge. These free community papers proudly serve the information needs of their communities across this great land, while promoting
local commerce, free enterprise, and public service. It is fitting that recognition be given to this special effort to salute these publications, their owners and staff for the continued contributions to the growth and success of local communities through their publications. On behalf of the entire Boca Raton Tribune family, I encourage all our readers to observe this month by taking the time to read, recognize and acknowledge the importance of free community papers. I also urge you to express your feelings regarding your free paper. Throughout this month - as we do in each publication - we will continue to highlight the good and the bad news in our communities. We also will recognize the author of a 300 to 350-word essay on how the Boca Raton Tribune helps the community or why a free press is important. Deadline for submitting this typed essay is August 15.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Follow Winning Models! Whether dead or still alive, there are many people who can help shape your life today into what you can and should proceed into becoming! The dead, through their writings and the testimony of others personally touched by them; the living, on account of their more immediate impact on your life via personal appearances, talks, and direct contact, are among the more common influences one can welcome and follow! Every individual leaves a legacy – some worth emulating, while others destined to being ignored altogether, even though the latter can still present a significant role to
influence us in our choices, as we recognize their unworthiness, thus leading us to avoid that completely! In seeking positive models for quality living, one can look back to the past without any need of apology. Great figures from a previous era can show us in the present key values that truly matter, the paths worth pursuing, the sacrifices that may be necessary for obtaining worthy results in certain pursuits! One valid advice I learned in my youth, which I kept uppermost in my thoughts and considerations, is: “Follow a winner; never follow a loser,” since the world presents us
with varied assortments of both. One needs a wise way of ascertaining who is a true winner, and who is obviously a loser! When you discover genuine winners, carefully study their styles, their modus operandi; consider what types of tools they wisely employ so as to achieve their objectives with palpable success! Each final product exhibits its own uniqueness. There can’t be duplications in the work which more than one person produces. Yet, people can be inspired by the quality of other persons’ work and follow the paths they’ve trod, and the devotion they gave to whatever they attempted, in
order to exhibit the same fine quality in the ultimate results of their efforts. Part of the secret is to avoid shortcuts, to bypass cutting corners, or to be content with the minimum they can devote to any project. By following the example of true winners, by deciding even to excel what those winners have already completed, is a sure way in delivering top quality within our reach, in whatever we attempt! The time for pioneers in attempting the best in whatever they do is not over, and it has no termination date; it’s an ever present challenge to any producer, regardless of the field of endeavor!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

West Boca’s Fresh Bites Cafe Represents Lite, Healthy Eating By: Stephanie Cornwell
Walking into That’s a Wrap, customers would enter what seemed to resemble a New York city subway station, with the intention of getting a quick, filling and affordable meal. While the meal selections at That’s a Wrap were extensive, the people eating there had a common craving- fresh, healthy food. What was once the local sandwich, wrap and salad shop known as That’s a Wrap, has changed its angle to a more modern healthfood eatery- Fresh Bites Cafe. The restaurant is located in Mission Bay, on Glades Road and State Road 7. When Fresh Bites Cafe, formerly known as That’s a Wrap first moved into town in 2011, many people were surprised it became so successful, due to its neighbors being a similarly health-minded establishment, Panera Bread. However, according to customer reviews, while Panera Bread began to feel more corporate, Fresh Bites Cafe offered a unique feel, flexible menu and fresh flavors. John Cibotti , Owner of Fresh Bites Cafe, explains that most of their customers are health-conscious. By making the atmosphere brighter and more colorful, “the response has been overwhelmingly positive.” Cibotti says that changing the name of the restaurant “lends itself to the food.” “The name That’s a Wrap made customers assume that the menu’s focus was on wraps, forgetting that there are healthier and organic options as well,” added Cibotti Fresh Bites believes in natural, homemade ingredients. Protein options such as chicken
and turkey are roasted fresh everyday. The recent installment of a Tower Garden has allowed the growing of fresh herbs such as basil, mint and parsley in the restaurant, allowing customers to see. There are no processed ingredients in any of the meals, and there are no longer unhealthy sides, such as potato chips. Along with the name changing from That’s a Wrap to Fresh Bites Cafe, the menu’s variety has grown. Fresh Bites Cafe now offers breakfast all day, every day. Breakfast options range from bagel sandwiches, protein shakes and turkey bacon, to a hardey bowl of greek yogurt, fresh fruit and raw honey. The most popular breakfast item includes organic spinach, feta cheese, egg whites and optional avocado. Fresh Bites Cafe’s lunch and dinner menu includes an array of specialty options. Customers can order from the menu, or create their own salad, wrap or sandwich. Soups are available as well. Being that Fresh Bites’ menu is so flexible, Fitness trainer and life coach, Andrea Hammer intends to guide customers in their daily food choices, by periodically holding nutrition and fitness seminars at the Fresh Bites Cafe restaurant. The next seminar will be held on July 10 at 6:00 pm. By offering delivery services, Fresh Bites has been able to reach people beyond the West Boca Raton area. The restaurant plans to open another location in the spring of 2016, although the destination has not yet been disclosed.
Summit Encourages Students to Take Actions, Navigate Their Destiny By CRA News Service
DELRAY BEACH - More than 350 youth from across Palm Beach Country attended the annual Teen Summit at Village Academy recently. The students, mainly from summer programs, attended more than 15 breakout sessions developed around the theme STAND, “Students Taking Actions and Navigating Their Destiny,” which highlighted leadership, individual responsibility, goal setting, healthy living, and living up to potential. The day-long conference focused on how to help young people thrive in their schools and communities. “This was a very important summit,” said Abagail Denson, who led a session on hygiene and etiquette for females. “Most of the girls didn't have a clue what the meaning of self-esteem and how you build selfesteem. This program is very much needed in the community because many kids do not get that nurturing and caring because of their family status.” The youth had an opportunity to participate other workshops on such topics as career planning, teen suicide prevention & education, how to conduct yourself when approached by law enforcement, economics, fitness, healthy eating and others intended to prepare them for their transition into adulthood. There also were static presentations from
the Delray Beach Police Department’s K-9 and SWAT units. Participants were treated to lunch and each received a sack pack with a notebook and pencil. Twan Russell, a former linebacker with the National Football League and currently the senior director of community affairs for the Miami Dolphins, kicked off the workshops by challenging the youth to have a goof work ethic. “Set good goals, work hard and don’t give up,” he said. “Whatever you put your mind to, you can’t quit. You have to stay on the course.” Several participants said they enjoyed the workshops, especially those where they received free giveaways. Major Leonard B. Mitchell of the Riviera Beach Police Department challenged the youth on taking a stand against things that are unhealthy and wrong such as bullying, drugs and skipping classes. “We are very excited by the participation,” said David Haynes, teen coordinator at the Achievement Center for Children & Families. “We were able to provide critical and important information to a few hundred kids who would normally not get this information.” The students danced to music by a local disc jockey after the event.

Baby Otter Andre Dawson Aquatic Center Teaches Kids To Swim

Drowning-the number one killer of small children in south Florida, is being prevented by the Baby Otter Andre Dawson Aquatic Center. The Baby Otter Andre Dawson Aquatic Center, named after the Hall of Famer and former Miami Marlins Baseball player, is a traveling swim school. With their motto of “Our school, your pool”, they work to make students feel calm and comfortable in their own homes. Baby Otter was opened 40 years ago, when Marlene Bloom, co-founder, realized that her two-year-old daughter was being denied swimming lessons because of her young age. Bloom knew that her daughter loved the water, but she did not want to put her in a pool without learning how to swim first. After being told by numerous swimming schools that her daughter was too young (under the age of 3), Bloom decided it was time to construct a swimming school that could teach young children how to swim. Now, Baby Otter has expanded. They kaitor to all ages, from eight-month-old babies, to senior citizens. They also help children with special needs, who have been turned away by other swimming schools. They travel to homes in Palm Beach, Broward County and Miami-Dade County. With their trademarked method of Turn, Kick, Reach, Baby Otters teachers their students how survive in the water in just five days. When asked how the program within five days, Bloom stated “We have a special curriculum every day. We teach the parents the proper technique so that they can practice with their children.” Cate Crehan, mother of two autistic children, had been turned away by several swim schools who guaranteed to help special needs children, without meeting her children. After being told that her children could not
learn to swim, Crehan was introduced to Baby Otter. Immediately, she knew that her family was in good hands. Crehans’s son, Indiana, who is nonverbal, has been spoken down to his whole life. The Baby Otter instructors, however, spoke to Indiana the same way they spoke his sister, Layla. The instructors held both children to high expectations, not treating them differently because of their special needs. Layla was able to swim within days of the lessons, and has become stronger and more confident. She is now on the special needs olympic team. When asked how the Baby Otter swimming classes have affected Indiana, Crehan stated that “When he is swimming on a regular basis, he is more concentrated, relaxed, and has the willingness to learn.” What separates Baby Otter from other swimming schools is the amount of emotional support and dedication to their students. According to Crehan, the school promised to stay with her children for no extra charge, to ensure that they were safe in the water. With the team’s six trainers, Baby Otters encourages people to reach their potential. They explain to students that with practice, they can only get stronger. By teaching the parents how to help their children on their own time, students are constantly improving. Bloom explains that “It is an amazing experience seeing people change from day 1 to day 5.” Many of the school’s students never thought they would have the ability to swim. Parents of students with special needs tend to be emotional at the sight of their children overcoming their disability, explains Bloom. She tells parents “I’d rather you cry today, than spend the rest of your life crying.” The Baby Otter Andre Dawson Aquatic Center guarantees more than swimming lessons, they instill confidence and hope to those who have never had that before.

Amy Schumer is not shy. She is not modest or delicate either. She is kind of like one of the guys in “Trainwreck;” a film in which she stars and wrote the script. “Trainwreck” is like an exaggerated version of Amy Schumer the brash and blunt stand-up comedian. The story begins with a flashback to when Amy was a child (Devin Farbry as a 9-year-old Amy). Her dad (Colin Quinn) is not exactly a model father. He drinks too much and messes around. “Monogamy is not realistic,” he lectures little Amy. The grownup Amy has taken this to heart. Amy sleeps with whomever whenever she wants- as long as they don’t stay overnight. She is a writer for a snarky New York magazine called S’Nuff, as in that’s enough. Her bitchy British boss (Tilda Swinton at her bitchiest) has given her an assignment she does not want: interview celebrity
sports surgeon Dr. Aaron Conners (Bill Hader). “Sports are stupid,” Amy sniffs. Nevertheless Amy interviews Dr. Conners, and immediately they click. The role of Dr. Conners allowed Amy Schumer the writer to invite every celebrity sports star she knew to play themselves. For instance basketball star LeBron James plays himself as Dr. Conners’ patient and good friend. James is surprisingly good, and he delivers some funny lines about the Miami Heat and his defection to Cleveland. “Trainwreck” is like a Mad magazine of cameos. My favorite is a movie-within-a-movie called “The Dogwalker,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, with Marisa Tomei as one of his clients. Amy also called fellow comedians to play small roles. These include Jim Florentine, Bobby Kelly and Dave Attell. The small part of an elderly gentleman named Norman is veteran stage and screen actor Norman Lloyd, who turns age 101 on Nov. 8. Wrestling star John Sena has an amusing speaking role as Amy’s muscle-bound boyfriend Steven. Playing themselves are actor Matthew Broderick, tennis legend Chris Lloyd and sports announcer Marv Alpert. Schumer even has a celebrity director: Judd Apatow directing the first film he did not write. As for the romantic story line between Schumer and Hader, it is the least effective part of “Trainwreck.” Go for the laughs and leave it at that. Rating:

The Importance Of Knowing Who Your Friends Are
Quick – name your five best friends. If you cannot name five, name three. Or two. How about one very good friend you have had for a long time? We all have friends – or at least think we do. Some of our colleagues at work we regard as friends – they can be people in our department or those we collaborate with on various projects. In some instances we also see them socially outside of work, but often our friendship stays within the confines of the workplace. Typically we also have friends that fill various roles in our lives. They can be our golf or tennis partners, traveling companions, financial advisors, someone we meet occasionally for coffee, or people that live in our neighborhood. The definition of “friend” may differ from one individual to the next, but most of the time, friends are people with whom we share smiles; those whose company we enjoy; individuals we look forward to interacting with, whether by phone, text, email or the old-fashioned way, face to face. For the most part, friends expand horizons of our lives and make each day more enjoyable. The litmus test of friendship, however, is not when things are going well, when our career is thriving and people around us can share in our successes. Friends show their true colors when our lives turn upsidedown. As someone has said, “When you rise in life, your friends know who you are. When you fall down, you know who your friends are.” In times of trouble or distress, there are not many more comforting words than hearing a friend sincerely say, “I am here for you,” or “I’ve got your back.” There is a saying,
“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” But in terms of friendship, when the going gets tough, true friends go nowhere – they remain alongside, eager to help in any way they can. The Bible has some interesting things to say about friendship: True friends are revealed when difficult times come. We all have images of people who are friends that enjoy sharing times of fun and recreation. “We have lots of laughs together,” they might say. But what about when we encounter setbacks – who are our friends then? Who can we count on for help when the “fun” is gone?“A friend loves for all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). Friends should be chosen carefully. There are people who seem to be everyone’s friend. They are highly social, gregarious individuals. Sometimes, however, those relationships are superficial, not the kind we can rely on regardless of our circumstances. So valued friends ought to be selected with discernment.“A friend of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs18:24). A true friend can be counted on for sound advice. The best friends are those who care about us deeply and genuinely, to the extent they are willing to tell us the truth, even at those times when we are not eager to hear it. “I am telling you this for your own good,” they will say, even if what they have to say does not seem good at the time.“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel” (Proverbs 27:9).
Three Years? “The law is an ass” originates in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that “the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”. Picture this: The professional young lady after a few years realizes that her husband is a drunk. Well, no, not just a Saturday night, Sunday football afternoon drunk but an alcoholic; a person who would rather make love to a Bud Light than to her. Best of times and worst she finds herself pregnant, and decides to hold on a bit to see if their little girl would encourage husband to changes his ways. Surprise, surprise…it did not. A divorce ensued. The parties fought over child care issues. The wife sought and got temporary exclusive parenting rights and the husband had supervised visitation only because of his alcoholism and the Judge’s fear of the husband driving his car with the child a passenger. The final hearing in the divorce case was set to start in about a month. The Husband’s lawyer had withdrawn for lack of payment. Word came though the Husband’s camp that he had fallen, cracked his head and was in a coma. The trial was cancelled; the husband in limbo as was the wife. “When can I get divorce,” she asked. After a brief visit with our Trust and Estates partner to confirm what I already knew I had to tell her that if her husband remained

in a coma, or became mentally incompetent as the result of his fall she would have to wait for three years after he was officially found to be incompetent to get divorced. I concluded that if he were to become incompetent he would have a guardian who could negotiate a marital settlement agreement with her, but the marriage could not be ended for three years under a Florida statute. I also told her that while she could bring an Incompetency case to court herself she could not be the guardian because they were in a divorce case against one another. Money was thin all around and not the real issue in the divorce case. The woman had a job with a reasonable paycheck but could not afford to start another case in probate court. All told she appears to be between a rock and a hard place. It also appears that there should be a more flexible path for a person in her situation, albeit unusual, to be able to go ahead with her life. Her income disables her from getting assistance from the local Legal Aid office. Who knows what happens next. Michael H. Boca Raton Football Club Partners with Boca Helping Hands to Give Children the Gift of Soccer
Boca Raton Football Club was at Boca Helping Hands volunteering at their Thursday Night Family Dinner last week. The club assisted Boca Helping Hands in preparing and serving meals, as well as distributing pantry bags, and gave the children a free soccer clinic. “We are very excited about the opportunity of partnering up with such an amazing organization like Boca Helping Hands,” says Boca Raton FC’s managing partner, Douglas Heizer. “The work Boca Helping Hands is doing with the community is fantastic and we at Boca Raton FC are ecstatic to be able to give back to our community.” The 2015 American Premier Soccer League

Regular Season Champions finished their regular season with eight wins and one loss and will host Miami Dade FC at Boca Raton HS, on Saturday July 25 in the APSL Semifinals. “Boca Helping Hands is thrilled the Boca Raton Football Club volunteered with us and became a part of our organization. The children that attended our Family Night Dinner were thrilled to meet these young men who are great role models. An added bonus was that they gave the kids some soccer tips!” said Karen Swedenborg, Development Manager, Boca Helping Hands. Boca Helping Hands’ mission is to provide
food and emergency assistance to meet basic human need and long-term solutions to break the cycle of dependence. The Thursday Night Family Dinner is one of the events the organization runs which is only open to families, with the emphasis on the children. Every Thursday, Boca Helping Hands makes the evening special for the children with crafts, movies, or organizations, such as Boca Raton FC to interact with the children. “Community involvement is a big part of our club,” added Heizer. “We are excited to have joined with Boca Helping Hands and be able to bring a smile to the faces of the kids of Boca Raton through The Beautiful Game.” Not only does Boca Helping Hands distributes over 5,000 pantry bags monthly, reach over 1,000 elementary students from nine different schools through their BHH Backpacks with six meals and two snacks, but they have a Job Mentoring Program which helps clients by offering “Life Skills”, computer classes, resume building and online job searches. Through the Esperanza Catering at Boca

Florida Launch Ends Road Season with 20-14 Loss
Coming into the game as the MLL's hottest team, the Florida Launch lost to the Denver Outlaws 2014 on Sunday, July 19 at Sports Authority Field. With the loss the Launch fall to 4-9 while the Outlaws improve to 6-7. Kieran McArdle paced the Launch attack with four goals, all coming in the second half. Connor Buczek became the league's leader in two-point goals in the loss, adding another goal with an assist for four points in the game. Lyle Thompson chipped in one goal with two assists for three points. Miles Thompson and Roman Lao-Gosney both provided two points, with a goal and assist for M. Thompson and two goals from Lao-Gosney. Chris Mattes handled the bulk of the faceoffs for the Launch, going 15-28 at the specialist position while also leading the team with nine groundballs. Austin Kaut was tabbed with the loss, playing 45 minutes of the game with 13 saves. Brett Quenner logged the final 15 minutes of goalie action. R. Lao-Gosney started the game with the opening goal, coming 1:03 after the initial face-off. Two minutes later the game had its first tie off of an Erik Adamson, but L. Thompson got a pass from brother M. Thompson to put the Launch back up one at 2-1 with under 10 minutes in the opening quarter. Denver yet again tied the game with a Michael Bocklet score, then taking its first lead of the game with a goal from Jeremy Sieverts. Making his first appearance since May, Duncan Clancy tied the game at 3-3 with a goal, but the tie was shortlived as Bocklet scored again to put the Outlaws back up one. In reverse fashion to the previous time, L. Thompson found M. Thompson during a powerplay opportunity to tie the game up again with a 4-4 score. Denver ended the opening quarter with the final two goals with scores from Chris Snyder and C. Bockley to put the Launch down 6-4. Jovan Miller ended the home teams run with the first goal of the second half off the flick pass from Casey Ikeda. After almost seven minutes of physical, scoreless
play, Tucker Durkin took the ball from the Launch's defensive side of the field to its offensive side tying the game at 6-6. Denver responded to the Launch's 2-0 rally quickly with Michael Bocklet putting the Outlaws up one, but a Connor Buczek goal tied the game again at 7. Just like in the previous quarter, the Outlaws scored the final two goals of the frame with C. Bocklet keeping Denver ahead in the back and forth half with a goal followed by another snider score before the intermission. Coming out of the halftime break, Denver continued the run they started in the previous quarter with back-to-back goals from the Bocklet brothers. After surrendering another Denver goal, this time from Snider, Kieran McArdle scored to end the Outlaws 5-0 run and make it a 12-8 contest. David Dickinson made it a five-goal game again for the Outlaws before R. Lao-Gosney scored his second goal of the game to bring the lead back down to four. Denver's C. Bocklet and Snider scored the final goals of the third frame to make the Launch's deficit six at 15-9. Riding the momentum from the previous stanza, M. Bocklet extended Denver's lead to seven, quickly putting Florida down eight after C. Bocklet found the back of the net. McArdle put the Launch in double digits with his second goal of the game, cutting the visiting side's deficit to seven at 17-10, recording the hat trick following a C. Bocklet score to make it an 18-11 contest. M. Bocklet quickly responded to McArdle's goal with a score of his own, followed by a Grant goal to put the Launch down 20-11. Florida ended the game with a 3-0 run, with Buczek scoring his fourth two-point goal of the season followed by McArdle's fourth goal of the game made the final score 2014. The Launch conclude the 2015 season at home on Saturday, July 25 when the Rochester Rattlers come to FAU Stadium. Tickets for "Fan Appreciation Night" that will include gate giveaways, raffle prizes and "Jerseys Off Our Backs" Giveaway are still available by calling (561) 923-9067.
APSL Quarterfinals Heat Up, Semifinal Dates Set
The American Premier Soccer League opened up its 2015 playoffs on Saturday, July 18 at Broward College with a quarterfinal doubleheader which put Miami Dade FC vs Alianza Miami, and Red Force FC vs South Florida FC. In the first game of the doubleheader, Miami Dade FC took an early 1-0 lead over Alianza Miami when Kerlon Moura found the back of the net. Miami Dade went on to defeat Alianza Miami 3-0 to set up a meeting with top-seeded Boca Raton FC on Saturday, July 25 at Boca Raton HS. “We are excited at the opportunity to play Boca Raton once again,” says Robert Link. “They are a great club and it will be a very hard game in a place they are comfortable in playing.” Boca Raton FC (8-0-1) is the top-seeded team and its only loss came to the hands of Miami Dade FC early in the season, since then the club went on a 7-game win streak and were crowned the regular season
champions. In the second game of the quarterfinal doubleheader, Red Force FC met South Florida FC where the two APSL powerhouses duked it out in an exciting 5-3 match that ended in Red Force’s favor. Former Chivas USA and Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Scott Gordon, got the scoring started for Red Force and the clubs went back and forth in an exciting match. Red Force’s Herber Hernandez scored twice and Victor Flores and Steven Salinas both had one for the 3rd-ranks Red Force FC. Red Force FC has set up a date to play 2nd-ranked Uruguay Kendall in the other semifinals. The top four teams have made it to the semifinals, and this weekend only two will come out with a spot the inaugural APSL Finals. “We are excited about the opportunity to compete in the semifinals,” says Boca Raton FC’s head coach Marcelo Castillo. “The level of play in the APSL has been tremendous this season and the four best teams will now have a chance to play for the finals.” For more information on the semifinal games, please visit www.apslsoccer.com.
