Thousands Receive Free Supplies at Back to School Events

By CRA News Service It was not long ago that Palm Beach County public school students were celebrating the end of the school year. On Saturday, reality stepped in when parents and students found themselves preparing for back to school after what appeared to be a short summer. “I can’t believe the summer is over already,” said Annmarie Blake of Delray Beach as she attended a school supply giveaway event at Village Academy. Community Thousands Receive Free Supplies at Back to School Events in Boca, Delray

Continued from page 1

“Only God knows where the summer went.” Blake was among thousands of parents and students who benefitted from the annual Back to School Bash at Village Academy. The Bash, organized by the Spirit of Giving network, is a free event for elementary,

middle and high school students. Students had to be invited to the event. Instead of shopping with their parents, they were then paired with a “shopping buddy” who escorted them through the aisles to select whatever color book bag they wanted and appropriate supplies. In addition to the kids and the school supplies, the event also featured health screenings, a health and wellness zone, a host of sponsors and vendors, including the Boca Raton Community Hospital, Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office and the Delray Beach Public Library. Village Academy’s new principal, LaToya Dixon, was on hand to greet her students.

“She must have hugged every child who came through those doors this morning,” Blake said. “She seems like she is a nice person.” At the Wayne Barton Study Center’s annual back to school supply giveaway, more than 1,000 volunteers made sure that the more than 4,000 parents and their children has the necessary supplies for school. “Today was an awesome day in our community. Everyone was able to receive the blessings from god,” Barton said. “These kids are ready and prepared for the classroom. They have school supplies, haircuts and the girls even had their nails painted. They are more armed with tools they need to compete at any level in the community.” Barton also donated two truck-loads of produce, meat and dry goods to the people, who came from as far as Miami-Dade County. Charles OBrady, a former educator, was on hand to stress proper nutrition through his fruit juices.

Americans continue to struggle with obesity, which is largely attributed to the types of foods they are eating, OBrady said. “A lot of them are filled with high fructose corn syrup and MSG so parents need to be aware of what they are giving their children to eat. It affects them in the classroom and I witnessed the effects of these children eating the wrong things,” the former math teacher of 20 years said. “When they eat the wrong thing they become lethargic and sleepy, which makes learning difficult.” Many people lined up early to get the free haircuts and hair-dos from Florida Academy of Health & Beauty in Wilton Manors. “So many of the parents here today couldn’t afford to get their kids’ hair done, so this was a joy for us to do this for them,” said Thomas Thompson, the school’s president, who has been partnering with Barton for the past six years. “These kids may have had a rough summer and they can now go back to school feeling good about themselves.”

Please Do Not Close Our Library I was in a courtroom recently when my phone rang – it was the head of our local children’s library. Embarrassed because I interrupted the proceeding, I decided to call her back in a few minutes once I was out. A text followed: I need to talk to you. Urgent! I stepped out and returned the call. “Can you stop by, I have something to share with you?” said the shaky voice on the other end. I could tell it was serious. In my meeting later with Dr. Lynda Hunter and library director Alan Kornblau, I learned some troubling news: Our library could be forced to close its doors for good if the city cuts its funding. She told me how the mayor, in a meeting with them, delivered the grim news that the city, in an attempt to balance its budget, is considering paring the money it gives the library and a handful of nonprofit organizations. The mayor also referred to the library as a “silo”, a warehouse for books and that they “are not self-sustainable,” Hunter told me. My head began to hurt, the adrenaline started rushing and I’m sure my blood pressure spiked.

For full disclosure, I must say, I have a lot of respect for our mayor. In fact, I like him. However, as the top official for the City of Delray Beach he is faced with making touch decisions, which will impact and alter the residents’ lives. But what happened to government for the people? What some of our city fathers do not know is that The Delray Beach Public Library is more than just a typical library. It is an integral part of the community – a safe haven for hundreds of kids who call it home between 2:30 and 8 p.m. weekdays and when it is open on weekends; an energizer for scores of senior citizens and a respite and resource for local workers on their lunch break. It is on West Atlantic Avenue within walking distance for local residents. The closest libraries are west of town on Hagen Ranch Road, in Boynton Beach and south in Boca Raton away from the communities that benefit from the library. Closing this library will make Delray Beach the only city of its kind without a major library. There was a time when I spent more than 50 percent of my daytime hours in the library. In fact, people often teased me that the library was my office. After all, it

is conveniently downtown where everyone could find it so I would often hold my meetings there as would other businessmen. I also was there almost every day with the students I mentor. That library puts you in a place of solace… it’s not like the bookstore. You just naturally relax for some reason, sometimes even fall asleep. There is something about our library that just puts you in a relaxing state where you say to yourself, “I am safe here.” I am reminded of Derrick, one of my former students, who at 9 was not a fan of school and did not like to read. I recall packing him and other students in my small car and hauling them to the Delray Beach Public Library after school on MondaysWednesdays where retired teachers would help them with homework and reading. After a short time, he began anticipating his trips to the library. At the end of the school year, he presented me with a book that he and his tutor produced through the year. Today, Derrick is doing well in high school and says he is an avid reader. Derrick’s family and I credit his development and love for reading to Dr. Hunter, head children’s librarian, who made sure

every child went home with a book each week. During the summers, it was not unusual to find her on the reading mat with them. She sang and played her guitar, brought in characters and used all kind of antics and gizmos to make reading fun to them. Dr. Hunter will tell you that for reluctant readers, in particular, the right book at an early age can make all the difference, and the Delray Beach library gives you the opportunity to try all sorts of things to find out what works. I am very thankful to my school and loving teachers who taught me to read. But I will be forever be grateful to my local library, which gave me access to a vast range of books – allowing me to see the world - and gave me a love of reading that has lasted for lifetime. I urge everyone who cares about saving our library to attend the City Commission meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 18th at 5:30 p.m., 50 NW First Ave. Please Mr. Mayor and Commissioners, do not close our Library!

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Alleviating Human Need! Whenever confronted with human need, you should not necessarily ponder “why” but, instead, consider the “what” and the “how.” It’s not necessary to inquire about causes of what appears so obvious to you; just acknowledge the urgency, determine what can be done to alleviate and solve that condition, and utilize the pathways leading to concrete action! Throughout all hours of any day, just by keeping your eyes fully open, and being fully attentive to what is around, you shall quickly recognize many who are “weak and

heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care.” Your immediate challenge is to determine what needs to occur and how it can be accomplished, either by yourself alone, or by engaging the aid of others! “When other helpers fail, and comforts flee” in the experience of others, be proactive and function as a responsible agent, offering hope through tangible acts of service. Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, pondered correctly when, looking at the world he exclaimed: “If there are only two men, the other man is my neighbor; if

there are millions, each one of these is my neighbor.” As new eras emerge, old needs remain, begging for sound solutions, many of which you are capable of offering. You can join hearts and hands together, and give heed to pressing conditions which can be concretely addressed, as you and others also carve emergency routes to lead you faster to those centers of need. This takes varied shapes on account of the manifold types of destitution everywhere, but the challenge persists unaltered, always begging for a loving acknowledgment and concrete response. Don’t wait till later for

what you can provide right now! In your weeping with another facing trials, more than likely you’ll bring a smile to that heart, while keeping another on your own face. There is joy in service, especially when it is done with full conviction and genuine sincerity! A mentor I once had, used a catchy phrase that summarizes what we’re talking about here. He said, “The secret of success is to find a need and fill it.” Or as he often paraphrased himself, “to find a hurt and heal it.”

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Boca Raton Resident Rides 650 Miles to Raise Awareness To Troubled Teens

Planned Mobility Ordinance Turned Down by City Council

By: Aaron Tefel

By Christian Alonso

Reese Jamison and four current residents, alumni, and supporters of the Paul Anderson Youth Home rode their bikes 650 miles from Key West, Florida, to the home’s location in Vidalia, Georgia to honor the home’s founder, Olympic legend and “World’s Strongest Man,” Paul Anderson. The 10th Annual Paul Anderson Bike Ride honors Anderson’s historic ride from Vidalia to Omaha when he first launched the home in 1961 and helps spread the message of he transformative work the youth home does in troubled teens’ lives and its preventive work through counseling and resources for parents and families. Jamison and the other riders rode through the Florida cities of Key West, Islamorada, Coral Springs, Stuart, Melbourne, New Smyrna Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach and finished with stops in Brunswick and Vidalia cities of Georgia . “For most of these boys, this is the toughest thing they will ever have to do,” said Drew Read, COO of the Paul Anderson Youth Home. “Each day, these boys begin to knock down barriers in their lives and realize they can achieve the unthinkable. This ride is truly life-changing for these boys.”

Three years ago, a troubled young Jamison was a sophomore in Boca Raton High School who was lacking the motivation to get through school. ”I was making bad grades Sometimes I skipped school, I would stay home or be with friends. I started getting into drugs” said Jamison. In 2013, he was kicked out of school and found himself on his way to the Paul Anderson Youth Home. The Paul Anderson Youth Home is a residential home providing Christian rehabilitation for young men seeking an alternative to incarceration. “Since I have graduated, I feel grown up. I feel like I learn a lot in my time over there.” Jamison continued “I feel respectful and smarter.” Jamison has been sober for the past two years and feels great. He is a lot more confident on the things he do. Jaminson took up biking last year when he rode in his first Paul Anderson Bike Ride, to prepare for the daunting 650-mile bike ride, Jamison and the other riders train for three months riding 20 to 60 miles each day. The Boca Raton resident will be attending Palm Beach State College this upcoming fall, where he wants to become a crossfit coach.

On Monday July 27, 2015 Councilman Robert Weinroth’s proposed plan to introduce Ordinance #5312 was rejected by four Boca Raton City Council members during a workshop meeting. Ordinance #5312 deals with the topic of planned mobility. Planned mobility’s goal is to reduce the amount of car trips on the road, where people would be more mindful to utilize public transportation, carpool with others, or walk to name a few. For this concept to work, people would have to be willing to reside in an area that fits all their needs ranging from work to recreation so that they would have access to these establishments within a relatively short distance. According to BocaWatch.org, there are

several planned mobility districts designated for the city of Boca Raton. One such example is The Park at Broken Sound, which was formerly known as Arvida Park of Commerce. This neighborhood will offer restaurants, retail stores, and rentals for people to live all within the same area. The Park at Broken Sound will be Boca Raton’s first planned mobility neighborhood when completed. The topic of planned mobility does not sound all that bad. However, it was Weinroth’s Ordinance #5312 that caused some heads to turn. This ordinance called for density to increase in planned mobility districts by 80 percent. The call for such a massive increase was interesting considering that planned mobility in Boca Raton is still very early on in its development, where city council members have yet to see the effects of planned mobility and how effective it really is. Due to the lack of approval from city council members at the meeting, Councilman Weinroth decided to withdraw his request for Ordinance #5312. The ordinance was pulled from the council’s agenda for the following workshop meeting that was scheduled for July 28, 2015.

Students from 11 Boca Raton schools have been honored with the 2015 President’s Education Award, which recognizes students throughout the country who demonstrate educational excellence and academic growth in the classroom. Each year K-12 students compete for individual recognition from President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. The 11 local schools are among 49 in the School District of Palm Beach County that earned the award, which includes a congratulatory letter signed by the President, Education Secretary and the school’s principal. “The President’s Education Award Program recognizes achievement and hard work in the classroom while encouraging students to reach even higher,” Duncan said in a news release. “It honors students who meet high standards of academic excellence, while also rewarding students who have overcome tough obstacles to their learning.” The Boca Raton schools are: Addison Mizner Elementary, Boca Raton High, Boca Raton Middle, Eagles Landing Middle, Hammock Pointe Elementary, J.C. Mitchell Elementary, Sandpiper Shores Elementary, Loggers Run Middle, Omni Middle, Waters Edge Elementary and West Boca Raton High. Atlantic High and Banyan Creek Elementary in Delray Beach were also among the honorees; and three Boynton Beach schools - Poinciana Elementary STEM Magnet, Crosspointe Elementary and Freedom Shores Elementary - were winners. The PEAP has two categories that honor students graduating from elementary, middle or high schools:

Your New Lunch Spot!

• Award for Educational Excellence recognizes students’ academic success in the classroom based on grade point average or school-specific criteria and standards, such as high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities, and exceptional judgment; plus high scores on nationally normed achievement or state tests or recommendations from a teacher plus one other staff member. • Award for Outstanding Educational Achievement recognizes students’ hard work, often in the face of special obstacles to their learning. A school’s principal determines this award based on criteria developed at the school, such as showing outstanding growth, improvement, commitment, or intellectual development in particular subjects; demonstrating achievement in the arts; and demonstrating unusual commitment to learning in academics despite various obstacles. The program, founded in 1983, honors nearly three million students from more than 30,000 public, private and military schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The program was developed to help principals recognize and honor students who have achieved high academic goals through hard work and dedication to learning, according to the organization’s website. The school’s principal is the final authority on which students receive awards and determines the number of qualifying students based on eligibility and selection requirements. There is no limit on the number of awards, as long as students meet the criteria for each award.

The store feautures many second hand items including top designers like Prada, Versace, Chanel and Louis Vuitton dresses, bags , jewelry and shoes. I was greeted at the door by owner, Marza Black and joined about 45 guests enjoying great food and wines. There was a raffle for a beautiful piece of jewelry and several ladies modeling the great clothes from the store.

Sometimes it seems like we never leave high school. No matter what success failure or mediocracy we achieve later in life, what we were in high school remains a part of us. This thought came to me after seeing “Paper Towns.” It’s a romantic comedy set in senior year of high school in Orlando. The script, by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, is based on the young adult novel by John Green, who collaborated with the screenwriters previously on the weepy drama “The Fault in Our Stars.” “Paper Towns” is no weeper. In fact it is rather uplifting. Quentin meets Margo as a young boy in their Orlando suburb and is immediately smitten. Even as a little girl Margo is gorgeous and different, marching to the beat of her own drummer. “She loved mysteries because she became one,” Quentin muses. Quentin who grows into a nerdy teenager played by Nat Wolff, and Margot, who has only grown more beautiful, played by British fashion model Cara Delevigne, have drifted apart. One night, only about a week before senior prom, Margo climbs into Quentin’s bedroom window and lures him into an all-night caper of revenge against people she feels has wronged her. Quentin is apprehensive and fearful, but

he goes along, and as the night progresses he becomes bolder- and more in love with Margot. Quentin has two outsider best friends Ben (Austin Abrams) and Radar (Justice Smith). Radar has a long-time girlfriend Angela (Jaz Sinclair) he dotes up and plans to take to the prom. Ben has no girlfriend, but he dreams about pretty Lacey (Halston Sage), who goes with an arrogant jock. Shortly after their all-nighter, Margo disappears. She leaves behind cryptic clues on where she might be. Quentin enlists his friends as detectives and enlists them on a mission that ultimately takes them to a “Paper Town” (a town that exists only on maps) in upstate New York Credibility is not the strong suit of “Paper Towns.” Quentin seems to have an endless supply of money, and parents that don’t care if he takes off with their car. Likewise his friends take off on an adventure with no regard to their parents or worry about cops or school officials. “Paper Town” is a fantasy, but it is not sugary sweet or sappy. Everyone learns a valuable lesson save Margo, who remains an enigma. Perhaps that’s how it should be. Rating: 

Be Assured, Things Could Be Worse No job is perfect, and probably all of us have had times when we felt, “I hate my job.” But maybe the following will provide a new perspective on your present situation: A name-brand pharmaceutical company manufactures a rectal thermometer. Inside the box are included directions for use, and small print on the instructions sheet states, “Every rectal thermometer is personally tested and then sanitized.” How would you like to have the job of thermometer quality control inspector at that company? How does your job seem now, in comparison? You might be thinking, “Well, I’m not a thermometer tester, but sometimes it seems as if what I have to do is nearly as bad.” How should we handle hard times at work, those vexing moments when, as a friend of mine liked to say, “I would rather eat a bug”? There are many opinions that could be offered on that question, but I think there is no better source for practical advice than the Scriptures. We often see key individuals of the Bible called to perform distasteful tasks they would have preferred to avoid. Noah, for instance, devoted many years to building an ark, no doubt having to endure the ridicule of his neighbors. The prophet Jeremiah continually gave messages of gloom and doom to the rebellious, disobedient Israelites that had no interest in his calls for repentance. Writing to followers of Jesus in the city of Colossae, the apostle Paul urged them, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed,do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17). These people in many cases were required to perform unpleasant tasks, even shoveling horse

manure in stables. Perhaps they would have preferred being thermometer inspectors! The ultimate example of dealing with a hard job is Jesus Himself: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). This refers to His crucifixion, which He willingly endured. Not that Jesus looked forward to the physical suffering He would have to endure with enthusiasm. Apart from His disciples the night before, He prayed, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36). So when confronted with difficulties of our own in the workplace, how should we respond? We do not have to do it alone. We are tempted to think we are on our own, that no one understands our misery or can offer any help. But we can turn to God for the resources we need to continue despite the adversity.”I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). Trust that even undesirable work will receive notice. If we are faithful in doing the little things, Jesus promised, opportunities will be opened for doing much more.”Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men” (Proverbs 22:29). Take a long-term approach. If we focus on the present, sometimes circumstances seem hopeless. But perseverance often brings many benefits.”Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward” (Colossians 3:23-24).

Practice, Practice, Practice! Laughter is the best medicine. On the other hand, contrived jokes, especially those contrived to make a political point are starting to annoy me as the election approaches. The things that make me laugh the most are moments from a lifetime of collecting anecdotes in courtrooms and judge’s chambers all over south Florida. For years I practiced in Ft. Lauderdale with a man who left us too soon, Art Wolff. He decided that we should fly over to Tampa that Friday to be sworn in as members of the Federal District Court, Middle District. The court had adopted a testing requirement for membership, but postponed the start date. Art insisted that we apply under the existing rule, which cost $50.00 and a trip to be sworn in before the test became required, to be “grandfathered in.” (I no longer take the word grandfather so lightly.) We were sitting in an ornate, ceremonial courtroom in Tampa with about forty other lawyers waiting the swearing in ceremony. We waited, and waited…and about forty-

five minutes late the door opened and a tiny little old man in black robes, about ninety years of age entered, un-announced, and not identified struggled up a few steep stairs to the judge’s bench. Without pause or ceremony, he asked us to stand. He proceeded to administer an oath in a typical “repeat after me style.” When he finished he, without comment, departed in the silent way he had arrived. As the door closed quiet laughter broke out and erupted into some serious laughter. Questions were thrown about as to whether or not we were truly members of the Middle District. Proper certificates were later mailed. The Judge had, you see, taken us dutifully and perfectly through the oath usually administered to change immigrants into naturalized citizens. During dinner at my parent’s, home that Friday night I mentioned to my dad that now he and I had something in common. We were both naturalized citizens.

sports Boca Raton FC Wins 2015 APSL Season, Head to U.S. Open Cup

Boca Raton FC defeated Uruguay Kendall FC 1-0 at Broward College on Saturday night to complete their sweep of the American Premier Soccer League championships in their Inaugural Season. After defeating this same Uruguay Kendall team to win the Regular Season Championship, Boca Raton took their 9-game win streak to the APSL Finals as they defeated a determined Uruguay Kendall squad 1-0 to take the APSL Title to Boca Raton. The game started off slow as both teams were evenly matched and none were able to find a goal. Boca’s leading goalscorer Colby Burdette had a few clean shots on goal but was unable to give Boca the much-needed lead. Goalkeeper Derrick Santos was once again solid on goal as he defended a strong Uruguay Kendall attack in the first half. “We knew this was going to be a difficult game,” said Santos after the game. “They are a good club with some talented players and we knew they were looking to avenge

the regular season loss we handed them.” In the second half is where things got interesting. Midfielder Gabe Taboada broke the deadlock in the 47th minute as he beat the keeper to give Boca the 1-0. The second half was a chippy one. Despite being two men down due to red cards in the second half, Uruguay Kendall continued to attack and it was Santos and the Boca Raton FC defense who were able to keep the Uruguayans at bay. Boca Raton FC finishes their inaugural season with at 10-0-1 (W-D-L) record in the American Premier Soccer League. With the victory, Boca Raton FC has qualified for the 2015 U.S. Open Cup, a knockout cup competition in American soccer which is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. The 103rd edition, to be held in 2016, is expected to be contested by 91 clubs.

West Boca High School’s Kicker, Matt Danko, Continues Football Career at John Carroll University

By Stephanie Cornwell

Former West Boca Raton Community High School Kicker and Punter, Matthew Danko, will be attending John Carroll University this fall to continue his football career. Officially on the 2015 roster as a Kicker/ Punter, Danko will be entering his freshman year. John Carroll University is a private, Jesuit Catholic university in University Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Like many kickers, Danko started off as a committed soccer player since the young age of five. It wasn’t until his Sophomore year of high school that he decided to focus on football, and stop playing other sports. Due to the different techniques used in soccer and football, it became harder for Danko to fully excel in kicking. “There are different styles of kicking in football and soccer, you strike the ball differently,” explained Danko. Despite the differences in the sport’s kicking styles, Danko decided to pursue football saying there were more opportunities in the sport. He knew that he had to put in a lot of work if he wanted to continue his football career

in the collegiate level. Danko participated in four Kornblue kicking competitions from the winter of 2011 to the spring of 2013, in which he was ranked in the Top 40. Those who perform the best at the Kicking Challenge are recognized in the Fab 50 National Rankings. According to the Kornblue Kicking website, Kornblue Kicking has become one of the most nationally recognized companies in the kicking, punting, and long snapping industry. Although he will have to compete for a starting position at JCU, he is confident and ready to earn his spot. “I enjoy the pressure of standing out, it can be a good thing or bad thing, but it motivates me,” Danko said. Danko further explains that when on a football team, you become part of a family. He states that the bond gets stronger in college. Along with playing football, Danko plans to major in sports studies to become an Athletic Director or football coach. “Football taught me to lead and work hard if you want to achieve something,” added Danko.

Lynn Alumni Named Closer for the Colorado Rockies

It was a big weekend for Lynn University alum Tommy Kahnle. The former Fighting Knight and 2010 fifth round draft pick was named the closer for the Colorado Rockies while also collecting his first career save, on his 26th birthday. Kahnle was named the closer for the Rockies by manager Walt Weiss following the demotion of John Axford on Saturday, August 8. Kahnle is the fourth player to be named the closer for Colorado this season as the Rockies have had little luck with their ninth inning man thus far. This season he owns a 2.60 ERA with a 36/19 K/BB ratio in 28 and two thirds innings. On Friday night he earned his first save in as many attempts this season. “It is wonderful to see Tommy grow and mature as a professional; his talent has always been exemplary and his professionalism and maturity have gotten him to where he is now,” said head baseball coach Rudy Garbalosa. “He has always had the mentality of a closer and I am looking forward to enjoying watching him in the big leagues.” In two seasons with the Fighting Knights, Kahnle had a 4.79 earned run average while holding opponents to a .269 batting average. In 2009 he went 7-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 20 appearances helping the Blue & White to its first NCAA Division II National Championship. During his senior campaign he made 13 starts and struck out 71 batters in 74.2 innings pitched. Kahnle shined in the NCAA Tournament as junior, earning saves against #10 Tampa, #1 Southern Arkansas and #14 Florida Southern in the South Region Tournament en route to advancing to the D2 College World Series in Cary, N.C. In Cary he continued to impress. He

earned the win against Dowling throwing 3.2 innings of relief where he fanned five batters allowing just one hit and walking two. He picked up his fourth save in as many chances with two innings of no-hit ball against Belmont Abbey in a 7-5 win that propelled the Fighting Knights to the national championship game. Lynn went on to defeat Emporia State 2-1 to claim the Blue & White’s first national title in baseball and 19th overall. Once again Kahnle was dominant on the mound throwing two hit-less innings. He was named the Most Outstanding Player in both the South Region and National Tournaments that season. Kahnle returned for his senior campaign where he found his way back in the starting rotation for the Fighting Knights. He threw a no-hitter against Saint Leo in a 7-0 win on March 13, 2010, where he fanned seven batters. He was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Yankees in 2010 and in 2013 he was invited to Yankees spring training. The Colorado Rockies drafted him in the 2013 Rule 5 Draft and he was on the 2014 opening day roster for Colorado. He made his major league debut on April 3, 2014. This week, the Rockies head to New York for a four-game series against the Mets. In the crowd, right behind the Rockies dugout will be Kahnle’s former teammate from Lynn Andrew Fabian. “It’s pretty sweet seeing Tom go through the minor league system and watch him develop into a big leaguer,” said Fabian. “All his hard work has paid off and it’s awesome that he has found his way into a closer role at the highest level.”
