Amid blistering attacks on the Florida Supreme Court and the state Senate, the Florida House passed a congressional redistricting map Tuesday. The new map affects all of Florida’s 27 congressional districts to some extent, though some districts will be less recognizable than others. In South Florida, districts 21 and 22 previously ran parallel to each other vertically along the eastern side of Broward and Palm Beach counties. Now, the districts will be stacked one on top of the other, with one in Palm Beach County and one in Broward County and southeast Palm Beach County. Getting to Interstate 95 from Glades Road will be a little tricky over the next two nights. The entrance ramp to southbound I-95 for drivers heading west on Glades may be closed from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday, and from 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Drivers will have to make a U-turn just west of I-95 on Glades to get to another I-95 entrance ramp on Glades. The Florida Department of Transportation is putting in an anti-skid overlay on the ramp, which has had issues with vehicles sliding off the ramp and crashing during rainy weather. Boca Raton’s popular El Rio Trail reopened on Monday after being closed for months to make way for construction of the new Interstate 95 interchange at Spanish River Boulevard. A portion of the biking and walking trail was closed in March between the Tri-Rail station on Yamato Road and Spanish River Boulevard. The trail is regularly used by Florida Atlantic University students, who rely on the trail to travel between the Tri-Rail station and the FAU campus. Now, a majority of the T-Rex Trail will close for about six months as crews work on building two new overpasses that will take Spanish River Boulevard over I-95. The trail will close between the Tri-Rail station and Spanish River beginning Aug. 24. Cyclists and walkers will have to take Technology Way during the trail’s closure. 70 Male Role Models Welcome Village Students Back on First Day of School By Don Stephens

When Kevin Thompson showed up to school Monday morning, he expected to be greeted by his teachers and maybe his principal – not 70 men who were there to welcome students as they returned for the first day of classes. “This was a surprise and exciting,” Thompson, 16, said. “I have never seen anything like this and been greeted like this. Seeing all of these adults greet us on our first day back makes me want to strive harder in school.” The students at Village Academy were smiling from ear to ear as they walked through the main door and saw the love and support from the men of their community. There were police officers, fire fighters, several city employees, retirees and a host of other private sector workers. The men, in two rows, gave high-fives and cheered the students as they walked between them. The scene resembled that of an athlete running through a tunnel and being greeted by many cheering fans. “It’s all about the community and I am overjoyed with the overwhelming support shown today by the community of Delray Beach,” Assistant Chief of Police Javaro Sims said. “We are a village and today the love was shown by our males.” Parent Maurice Hayes was impressed by the grand reception as he took his daughter,

The driver of a pickup truck that slammed into the back of a car, drove off the road and struck a mother of 10 as she walked home from work has been charged in the woman’s death. Five months after the crash in the 600 block of S. Federal Highway, police have charged Bryce Samartino, 23, of Weston, with DUI manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter. He was released Aug. 15 from the Palm Beach County Jail on a $50,000 bond. The crash occurred around 10 p.m. March 1 as Elourdes Ostagne, 65, of Boca Raton, was walking home from her job at a local Burger King restaurant. Witnesses told police that Samartino, who was driving a white 2005 Ford F-150 pickup, was weaving in and out of traffic and tailgating other drivers as he barreled down the southbound lanes when he clipped an Altima while attempting to pass it, according to the arrest report. Police used a crash-data tool to determine that the truck was travelling at 76 mph and that the driver was not wearing his seat belt. The Ford, with oversized tires, then careened out of control and hit Ostagne, smashed into a light pole and palm tree then finally stopped when it struck the north wall of a local bank, police said.

Samartino and his passenger, John Schafer, 23, of Boca Raton received minor injuries. They were treated at the scene. The driver of the Nissan, Lorena Hilel, 25, of Pompano Beach, was not injured. However, the crash severed Ostagne's left leg above her ankle and her Burger King visor was found nearby in the bike lane, police said. Police said they found several empty Bud Light beer cans on the ground near Samartino’s Ford. They also said a March 17 toxicology report showed Samartino had a blood-alcohol level of .19, more than double the legal driving limit of .08, according to the arrest report. Colleagues of Ostagne said after the crash that she was a loving, caring and hardworking woman. “Everybody absolutely adored her,” Ashley Gombs, who worked with Ostagne, said then. “She would come in and she’d say ‘Hi boss,’ and ‘Hi to everybody.’” Ostagne became a widow a month before the crash after losing her husband to cancer. She was a great provider, family members said. Gombs said Ostagne’s coworkers affectionately call her “mom” because of her caring nature.

Tahja Hayes, to school. “It is both shocking and exciting to see that all of these men care enough to come out and support our kids,” Hayes said. “I definitely would have loved to have fathers greet me like this on my first day of school.” Monday’s event was an initiative of the national Million Fathers March, an opportunity for men to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children on the first day of school and throughout the school year. Research shows that students with involved fathers score higher on cognitive tests, have higher self-esteem and possess abilities associated with higher education achievement, Principal LaToya Dixon said. Dixon identified the need to improve parental involvement at Village Academy this school year and Monday’s initiative addressed that need. “It is extremely important for these kids to see male role models greeting them on their first day of school,” Dixon said. “Some of these students do not have father figures and seeing these men gives them someone to look up to. We look forward to working more closely with our fathers this year to ensure student success!” The men will be invited to volunteer or attend activities throughout the year, organizers said. www.bocaratontribune.com

The Future of the Library is Actually in Your Hands I was very impressed to see the turnout at this week’s Delray Beach City Commission meeting in support of keeping the city’s public library open. Supporters, some from as far as MiamiDade County, packed the tiny chambers and urged city fathers not to cut funding for the library, which has been an integral part of the community for more than 100 years. The city manager, as part of his annual budget presentation, is recommending that the mayor and commissioners cut funding to several non-profit organizations this year. Delray Beach has, for several years, contributed monies to some civic groups to help keep them afloat. Many of these organizations, including the library, rely largely on these funds to meet their mission. The Delray Beach Public Library has a unique partnership with the city in that while it is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and not a department of the city, the city provides 75 percent of its funding. Nancy Dockerty, chair of the Library’s Board of Directors, did an outstanding job outlining the role of the library in this two-

time All-America City and urged them not to cut 50 percent of their support. Last year more than 550,000 people visited the library, she told them. For the last 15 years, a cadre of retired teachers and professors have been volunteers their time to help students with reading and homework assistance in the library. This summer the library served 5,426 students as part of its seven-week literacy program for children. Each participant received new books and other incentives. Three students were among those who urged commissioners to save the library. While I was moved by the turnout, I was somewhat miffed. Only a handful of the users from the African-American community, one of the segments, which use the services the most, were present. Several of the African-American supporters present do not live in the city or even use the library; they however know the danger ahead should the residents be deprived of the only library in town. The library also serves children from every school, public and private, in the city. Yet the students who were there

represented three schools including one in Boca Raton. Emails were sent to the leaders of most of the churches in the city and fliers were left at all of the churches within a mile radius of the library. Let it be known, that the library is a safe haven, a surrogate parent and a babysitter for many children who attend several of these churches. Kudos to the members of the clergy from St. Mathews Episcopal, The United Methodist Church of Delray and Mt. Olive Baptist churches who were present as were members of their flock. The excuses I have heard from many were varied: it was raining and some said it a weeknight and they had to go to work the next day. One educator told me it was the second back to work for her and she had to get ready for school. I wonder what would have happened had Dr. Martin Luther King chose to spend more time with you wife and young children instead of making sacrifices for people, many whom did not even give a darn about him. Or what if Rosa Parks had opted to

get off that Montgomery, Ala. bus and catch the next one instead of risking arrest to send a message. If we cannot make a two-hour sacrifice to attend a life-altering meeting after work, the result could be a hard price to pay. Our elected officials represent the people and generally, while they are expected to make decisions that are in the best interest of the city, even if it means voting against one’s wish, if they see a large turnout at the commission meeting in opposition to a pending vote, they will give careful thought before deciding. Residents, taxpayers and patrons of the library, the decision to keep the library’s doors open is in your hands - somewhat. You can show your support for the city to continue the full funding for the library by attending the next city commission meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m. or watch your library close its doors and be replaced with a revenue-generating business on the prime real estate downtown.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Your Caring Ways Can Help Others! Have you ever heard yourself or someone else state, “I don’t care” or “I couldn’t care less”? This is often said not just about things, or of situations but, regrettably, of other persons also. Fortunately, however, that is not the usual attitude of most individuals toward other people. There’s a measure of goodness in all of us which causes us to care about others, not only in their times of distress and need, but also when things are going well for them. Caring is an important quality for one to possess, and it is deeply appreciated by those who become its objects. Anxiety has been described as “the official emotion of our age” excluding no one regardless of age, class, educational standing, or any other factor. It is a problem

that truly paralyzes those affected by it, becoming a burden humanly impossible for anyone to bear alone. That’s when and why caring is so necessary, and relatively easy to fulfill for the benefit of another! As author W.T. Purkiser wrote: “…dwelling on misfortune and woe merely increases their hold upon us.” The good news is that many people are always ready and willing to be a hearing ear, and a friendly shoulder for one to cry, besides being capable of providing aid to some who may be loaded with manifold burdens which any caring person can help alleviate. Be sure to live each day alert to all that surrounds you, which includes people for whom you can offer a word of cheer, of comfort, of genuine care. Quite often

neighbors, friends, fellow workers are plagued by fears, remorse, resentment, unrelieved anger, lack of forgiveness, or anything else which keeps them tied to the past, suffering unnecessarily, not realizing the full relief and healing available to them. One needs not be a professional therapist to perceive some such conditions, to inquire without being nosy, by drawing from another that which, through talking, can bring a measure of relief. By showing genuine interest in helping, without seeking any rewards in return, will more easily enable someone to confide and, gradually find the reassurances that might have been lost to them! Author Lewis B. Smedes addressed the issue, in its most common form, when he

wrote: “Unrelieved resentment is like a videotape inside your soul, playing its tormenting reruns of the rotten things somebody did to you, playing it over and over, wrenching your soul tighter every time it plays.” As a caring response, the sooner we assess a conflicting situation in another life, the quicker can we help set them free from a permanent scar in their soul, and gradually lead that life into a healthier pathway with a saner frame of mind to deal with similar situations they might later be faced with. Truly caring individuals can be as effective as many professionals in renewing hope and providing a road map where such hope can be found, secured, and permanently kept!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Palm Beach State College Foundation Receives $25,000 From The Rotary Club of Boca Raton

The Palm Beach State College Foundation received $25,000 from the Rotary Club of Boca Raton on Aug. 5 for student scholarships. “We are very passionate about supporting students in their academic goals,” said Spencer Siegel, president of the club. “We not only desire to help them financially but we also guide them through our mentorship program. These students are smart and very motivated and often times have very little guidance as to what to do in life. We believe even the smallest push in the right direction from someone who is not their mom or dad can mean the world in terms of their success in life.” The scholarships will be given to students who are: members of the Rotaract Club

at Palm Beach State’s Boca Raton campus, participating in the club’s mentorship program and seeking an Associate in Art or Associate in Science degree, among others. “We enjoy the relationship with The Rotary Club of Boca Raton and are appreciative of all the advice they have given our students over the years,” said Suellen Mann, executive director of the Foundation. “I thank them again for taking their support a step further with this donation. This club is a group of givers who truly make a positive difference in the community.” Established in 2011, the Rotaract Club at Palm Beach State College is a community service and professional development organization geared toward creating positive, lasting change within the community, and within its membership body. Rotaract is a new generation’s branch of Rotary International, the world’s largest professional service organization with 1.2 million members spread across the globe. “Rotaract is a New Generations branch of Rotary International, the worlds largest professionals service organization with 1.2 million members spread out across the globe.”

Gannon Files for Re-election As PBC Tax Collector

By Jason Schwartz

Anne Gannon, Palm Beach County’s tax collector since 2006, has launched her fourth re-election campaign – one year before the August 2016 primary. “As tax collector, I have strived to improve customer service, make the office more efficient and effective in delivering services and have worked to protect our tax dollars,” Gannon said in a news release. “I have made it my mission to serve the residents of Palm Beach County and have a long record of results that have benefited the

county. I want to continue to be a leader residents can trust to get the job done and have filed my intent to run for reelection.” Gannon will run in the Democratic Party primary in August 2016. The general election will take place in November 2016. The Delray Beach resident collects and disburses more than $3 billion in tax revenues in the county and issues REAL ID compliant driver licenses for Palm Beach County. The Agency employs more than 300 in its central office and eight service centers that collectively handle more than 4,000 customers daily. According to the release, over the past 11 years, Gannon has developed programs to modernize and streamline the tax collection agency including implementing a competitive bidding process, increasing online transactions and using updated technology to better serve taxpayers. Under her leadership, the Tax Collector’s Office has received numerous awards and accolades for their services. She is a member of the Florida Tax Collectors’ Association, the National Association of County Treasurers and Tax Collectors, Executive Women of the Palm Beaches and the PBC Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Gannon was elected in 2006 and subsequently reelected in 2008 and received 87 percent of the vote in 2012.

What an eerie, haunting and powerful little film is “Phoenix,” now playing at Living Room Theaters in Boca Raton. A “film noir” in color, “Phoenix” is set in a ruined Berlin, Germany immediately after World War II. Adapted from Hubert Montelheit’s 1961 novel “Return From the Ashes,” “Phoenix” is a story of love, betrayal, loss and survival by director Christian Petzold. Yes, this is another Holocaust film, but it is much more than that. Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss) is an Auschwitz survivor and only member of her family left alive. Lena has been terribly disfigured in the war. When we meet her in Switzerland she is completely bandaged and attended to by her best friend and fellow Holocaust survivor Lene Winter (Nina Kunzendorf), who has arranged for her to have plastic surgery in Berlin to restore her face. Lene urges Nelly to have total facial reconstruction so that she has an entirely new face. Nelly disagrees. She wants her old face back. The doctor warns her she will never look exactly as she had before her injuries. We learn soon enough why she wants to resemble her old self. “Phoenix” is a mystery wrapped in a romance, underscored by the madness and cruelty of the Holocaust. The romance is the unrequited love the Jewish Nelly feels for her gentile husband Johnny (Ronald

Zehrfeld) who was also her musical partner when he accompanied Nelly’s singing. The name “Phoenix” is not random. Though it is the name given to the shady nightclub where Nelly, now calling herself Esther, rediscovers Johnny, now called Johannes, it also recalls the Greek myth of the Phoenix, which rises from its ashes after death. Johnny is now doing menial labor in that same nightclub. Against Lene’s strongest warnings, Nelly pursues Johnny, who may have been the rat who betrayed her to the Nazis. There are echoes of Hitchcock’s great “Vertigo,” with a mysterious heroine with two personalities. Nina Hoss is a top German actress, but little-seen in the USA. Some may remember her from “A Most Wanted Man” with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Suffice it to say she is a master actress who will grip your heart. “Phoenix” has the best use of a song in recent memory. In this case it is the melancholy Kurt Weill masterpiece “Speak Low” (when you speak love). It is first heard early in the story and again at the searing, almost silent finale. In a sense almost any film set in post-World War II Germany is about the Holocaust. In this case it involves more universal emotions. “Phoenix” is a masterful movie.

Women’s Basketball Adds Gabriella Goeins for 2015-16 Season

Lynn University’s women’s basketball team continues to grow following head coach Julia Huddleston’s announcement that Gabriella Goeins will be joining the Fighting Knights for

Flag Ship Of The Boca Raton Pirate l a i c i s FC Off

the upcoming season. Goeins comes to Lynn with three years of eligibility remaining after a one-year stint at Northwood University. “We continue to build our roster with student-athletes who work hard and do so with a relentless passion,” said Huddleston. “Gabby will immediately add an incredible defender to our squad. She’s the type of player who knows how to make her opponent pay for their mistakes on the court. In addition, Gabby is a proven scorer with an aggressive mentality that our fans will love.” She scored a season-high eight points against Florida Memorial, shooting 2-for-4 from the field and connecting on 4-of-5 shots from the free-throw line. She had 11 steals in 16 games, twice recording three steals in a game. “I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Gabby throughout the recruiting process and I am excited to introduce her to our Lynn University Fighting Knights family,” added Huddleston. A graduate of Ocseola High School in 2014, the 5-foot-6 guard committed to Northwood where she appeared in 16 games for the Seahawks as a freshman averaging 2.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game. Goeins is the fifth addition to the Fighting Knights’ squad since Huddleston took over the program in June. She will join the four other newcomers and five returners from last season’s team for the 2015-16 season.

Strikers Find Rhythm, Defeat Rowdies for Coastal Cup Lead

Ahoy Mateys...Welcome aboard the replica of a 1715 three-masted Frigate on wheels. Now a pirate ship for 3 to 11 year olds. Ideal for fund-raising events, parties, parades and especially unforgetable birthday parties. ARRRRGH! After a three-game winless streak, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers look to have finally found its rhythm versus a familiar foe in the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Strikers last win was on July 25 versus the Rowdies in Tampa Bay when the red-and-gold spoiled Freddy Adu’s NASL debut, but since have found themselves in trouble, not being able to come out with a W all of August, but rather settling for ties after dominating most of the game to FC Edmonton and Atlanta Silverbacks. “Most of earlier games this season were like that,” explained forward Stefano Pinho. “We would dominate the entire game and then in the end we seemed to shut down and we would concede these silly goals that were our fault. We would essentially lose to ourselves.” Stefano, who is on loan from Fluminense, has been one of Fort Lauderdale’s brightest spot in what has been a rocky season that began with the addition of Léo Moura back in March. The team leader in goals, Stefano added his seventh goal to his NASL account on Saturday early in the match when the Brazilian received a ball 25 yards out from Gabriel, controlled it, turned and finished with a left-footed strike to the top left corner. The goal was number three on ESPN’s Top Plays the following day. “It was an ‘in-the-moment’ situation, I August 21 - September 3, 2015

www.bocaratontribune.com

knew he wouldn’t expect me to shoot that far back so I did,” said Stefano with a smile. The Strikers were able to defeat the Rowdies at Lockhart on Saturday night in front of 5,145 fans, take the lead in the 2015 Coastal Cup, but most importantly, they got their swagger back. “We have a different mentality now,” explained Stefano. ”We’ve put the blame of those late-game ties on us and now we are getting better as a result. We have a great team.” “In the second half, we were the better team,” said Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “Now, we have to keep trying and keep working to do things better.” The win at Lockhart is Kronsteiner’s first in his second stint as the Strikers head coach. “Günter [Kronsteiner] has been working hard with us throughout this season,” explained Stefano. “It took a little longer to get it going than we all expected, but Günter is doing a fantastic job with the group. He came to put the house in order, we have a young team and we are continuing to get better as the season progresses, and hopefully we will make the playoffs” The Strikers currently sit in 9th place in the combined standings but are only five points back of fourth-place Tampa Bay. The Strikers continue their march to the playoffs on Sunday as they take on FC Edmonton north of the border.

FAU Football Completed Final Full Practice Before Classes Begin

Practice was delayed approximately an hour, due to weather, but the Florida Atlantic University football team scrimmaged nearly an hour, following individual drills. The scrimmage also allowed the coaches to wear headsets and work on substitutions and on their in-game communication. “Normally this would be our last day of camp,” said Charlie Partridge, FAU’s head football coach about the last practice prior to classes beginning. “But, because we have three weeks of classes prior to the first game in some ways, we will be in a camp mentality mode next week. We will still

be evaluating some of our newcomers. We will still have some general install. We will not get started on Tulsa prep for another week and a half. There is still some camp mentality and I think it is of benefit to us to stretch out the amount of time we have until the first game. I’m really excited after 12 practices with where we sit. There has been progress on both sides of the ball. Walking off the field today it felt like the defense was better than the offense, which was good because day-in and day-out the offense has probably won more. It was good to see the defense have a positive performance today. We will do some walk through and install tonight and then start to back off in order get their legs back.” Season tickets, as well as Miami single-game tickets, are on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls or by visiting Ticketmaster.com or www.fausports. com. Less than 1,100 tickets remain for the FAU season home opener versus Miami. All games are carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3 FM or on www.fausports.com.
