Community Boca Raton City Council Takes Unanimous Stand Against Anti-Semitism We, the undersigned,

Continue from page 1

The statement rejects the notion that antiSemitic acts are justified by one’s view on the actions of Israel and that any prejudices stemming from religious differences do not reflect American values. The statement also declares that good governance relies on mutual understanding and respect among all citizens. The following is the full text of the statement, executed on behalf of the residents of our city. “We, the undersigned Mayors and municipal leaders, recognize that we live in a global era. Our cities and towns, regardless of size, belong to a global community in which our citizens are more interconnected than ever and where events in one community can have ramifications across the world. We also understand that mayors and municipal leaders have a significant role to play in promoting respectful communities that advance coexistence among peoples of all races, ethnicities and faiths, and that the success of any city or town is based upon people of all backgrounds coming together to move our civic communities forward. It is with this in mind that we express our deep concern about the alarming spread of anti-Semitism around the world, most violently and visibly in parts of Europe, and from which the United States is not immune. Anti-Semitism is not only an attack on Jews but an assault on the core values of any democratic and pluralistic society. In a world of global communications where anti-Semitic ideas can and do spread rapidly, the impact of the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe does not stop at Europe’s borders. When the fundamental values of democracy are challenged, a concerted and principled response is required.

We are, therefore, heartened that leaders from around the world have spoken out about this dangerous phenomenon and have urged action to confront it. Examples of such statements include:

• Condemn anti-Jewish hatred, in all its forms; • Reject the notion that anti-Semitic acts, while sometimes carried out in the name of a political cause, may ever be justified or excused by one’s opinions about the actions or existence of the State of Israel; • Declare that prejudices against Jews or others due to differences in religious faith are inconsistent with our core values; • Support government efforts directed at eradicating anti-Semitism and preventing extremist indoctrination and recruitment; and support expanded education programs, including Holocaust programs, that increase awareness and counter intolerance and discrimination; • Recognize the ever-present need to be vigilant about efforts to prevent and report acts of anti-Semitism, and other hate crimes; and • Believe that communities that promote a climate of mutual understanding and

respect among all citizens are essential to good governance and democratic life. We, therefore, commit to working within and across our communities to advance the values of respectful co-existence and call upon mayors, municipal leaders, and other officials in Europe to join us in affirming that anti-Semitism is incompatible with fundamental democratic values.” No community is immune from the ugliness of anti-Semitism. Even in Paris, France, lauded by many as one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its collection of talent across the spectrum of architecture, art, literature, cuisine and culture, a significant rise in anti-Semitism, in the form of violent attacks has risen to over 1,000 episodes reported in 2014. The AJC hopes raising awareness to this issue will reverse what some view as a subtle social shift that has made anti-Jewish remarks or behavior more acceptable.

• President Obama, speaking at a Washington, D.C., synagogue, warned: “[I]n recent years, we’ve seen a deeply disturbing rise in anti-Semitism in parts of the world where it would have seemed unthinkable just a few years or decades ago. This is not some passing fad; these aren’t just isolated phenomena. And we know from our history they cannot be ignored…. [W]hen we allow anti-Semitism to take root, then our souls are destroyed, and it will spread;” • German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared: “Anyone who hits someone wearing a skullcap is hitting us all. Anyone who damages a Jewish gravestone is disgracing our culture. Anyone who attacks a synagogue is attacking the foundations of our free society;” • French Prime Minister Manuel Valls outlined just how critical the fight against anti-Semitism is, declaring: “The choice was made by the French Revolution in 1789 to recognize Jews as full citizens. If 100,000 Jews leave, France will no longer be France. The French Republic will be judged a failure; • The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) reaffirmed, this past November, the crucial need for participating states to continue to combat anti-Semitism; • As Mayors and municipal leaders, we have a special responsibility to speak out against the growing menace of antiSemitism, and we call upon our European counterparts to join us in adding their names to this statement and in affirming the following: www.bocaratontribune.com

Helping Residents Own the American Dream Homeownership is tightly woven into America’s DNA. Over the years, the prototypical modest home with a white picket fence has become the defining image of the American Dream. Culturally a decent house has been a symbol of middle-class family life – long considered the cornerstone of advancement. For many Delray Beach residents with modest means, that time-honored steppingstone is becoming less attainable. The cost of that dream in town is now at an average of $259,900 and the average sold price for a home was $160,000. Despite those grim statistics, the Delray Beach Community Land Trust has helped at least 61 local families achieve the dream of homeownership over the last 10 years. The CLT also manages 40 rental units within the city limits. In this unique and interesting form of property ownership, qualified low- to moderate-income families own the home, which they can pass down to their heirs, but not the land the house sits on which is held by the CLT in perpetuity. Residents have a

99-year renewable Ground Lease agreement on the land. The nonprofit organization, under the leadership of Evelyn Dobson, will observe its achievements at its annual meeting on Sept 17. 6:30 p.m., at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts (Old School Square-Gym), 51 North Swinton Ave. The Delray Beach Community Land Trust is considered a model for CLTs around the state and country. In fact, earlier this month the DBCLT was recognized at the Florida Housing Annual Conference as a viable affordable housing organization, which has been serving very-low to moderate income households for 10 years. Nationally, community land trust homeowners are eight times less likely to experience foreclosure than those owning homes holding traditional prime mortgages. As evidenced in the CLT homes, homeownership encourages neighborhood stability, and can provide a stable atmosphere to support strong families. It also creates a safe environment in which to raise children. When families can find a good place to

live in Delray Beach of any city, they’ll stay there. They’ll invest in their community and help create new economic growth. The past decade was truly a magnificent period full of celebration, reflection, challenges and hope for the future despite a 2 ½ year economic housing downfall, Dobson told her stakeholders in her annual report. “We have accomplished a lot since our inception. We have created permanently affordable homes, offered hard working households the chance for security, equity and legacy stemming from homeownership,” she said. “We also have provided ongoing support to our homeowners, helping support their success, and avoiding foreclosure.” Buying a home is usually a wise financial decision because it allows you to invest your hard-earned income in a real asset that builds equity. For many families, a home represents the largest source of wealth passed from generation to generation. Most Americans agree on the value of owning a home. Today, the nation enjoys a 67 percent homeownership rate, according

to data released from the Census Bureau. That means there are more than 72 million homeowners in the United States – that’s more than at any time in our history. And while there are many perks to buy a home, the process can be a tedious and confusing one. For the novice homebuyer, questions such as where you can get a loan, how much money you can afford to borrow, and what rights you have as a home buyer abound. As I have experienced through the years, buying a home involves much more than finding a realtor and applying for a mortgage. There are also pitfalls to be aware of − unscrupulous and fraudulent money lenders, homes that contain hidden structural damage, and not fully understanding your contractual obligations as a buyer − all of which can bring a quick and painful end to your dream. Fortunately local residents have the Community Land Trust to guide them through this process.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

You Can Set a Valid Example! The number of worthy models that other persons can wish to follow appears to be in shorter supply these days! Through the ages, several individuals were viewed as legitimate patterns for young people, and even for others who had already attained higher levels in society, but who could still move higher! Good models still exist today. A problem is that most are not being viewed as such by several citizens, nor sought out by the ones who can truly benefit from their sound influence. The age of the apprentice is never over, especially when people can always emulate good habits, healthy life-styles, and set the appropriate goals to lead them to where they desire to be!

You can be the right model others can emulate. Don’t minimize your ability to make an impact, to share your experiences, to lead others in paths of genuine accomplishment in those areas you can influence, and be a true aid via a consistent, high level life-style! The good thing about this is that one doesn’t need to live in the spotlight to make a solid difference. It’s not the rich and famous who today, more than in previous ages, can exercise an indelible influence on others. Common people of high character and selfless dispositions can fulfill such functions better than many others. Quite often this is not even a planned activity, but the result of a life well-lived, where personal values are on display without hav-

ing been put there by anyone. Along with that, the glow of their personality in the exercise of activities viewed by the public, shines forth and impacts its observers. It’s the consistency of their ways and doings, the manner of fulfilling certain duties, that shall leave a lasting mark on others! Members of contemporary society have known for some time, that no longer should one count on the famous to set the right example. Movie or television stars, sports figures, singers, politicians, besides a few others who distinguish themselves in some area easily noticed by the public eye, can manifest through their performances the values worth emulating by citizens, especially the younger generations. Some

can still do a good job, but the vast majority, unfortunately, have become consistent, deplorable disappointments. It’s those who consistently abide by lofty ideals and legitimate good standards, who can make a positive difference in lives of succeeding generations, as well on their contemporaries who could become legitimately envious of something special which such person exemplifies in daily living. Consider being and doing all that, and the resources will be available to you, and the rewards shall be immense, and the benefits to others can be amazing!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

School Officials Concerned With State-Mandated Assessments, Despite Validity Study By School District Public Affairs

Palm Beach County School District leaders remain concerned with the Florida Standards Assessment and the state’s high-stakes accountability system despite a study upholding the validity of the state-mandated assessment test. Those concerns include questions about the test’s administration, particularly the computer-based portion of the assessment; the alignment of Florida’s standards with the questions that appear on the test; and the use of Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) scores to evaluate the performance of students, teachers and schools. “We appreciate the state’s review of the test. However, the results of the study have not changed the feelings of teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders throughout Florida,” School Board Chairman Chuck Shaw said. “Fundamental issues remain with Florida’s accountability system that must be addressed by the Legislature.” More than 90 percent of stakeholders who responded to a community survey conducted by the District last year supported delaying the use of FSA results to determine school grades, student promotion, graduation, or for teacher evaluation, officials said. The District’s in-depth review of the state’s 186-page validity study, released earlier this month, raises significant questions about the FSA, including: • Lack of alignment between the Florida Standards Assessment and what is taught in the classroom. For example, the validation study shows that for the Grade 3 English Language Arts test, 33 percent of test items were not aligned to state standards. On the Grade 10 ELA test, 20 percent of the test questions did not align to state standards. • Problems with computer-based testing underlies the need for a phased

implementation of these tests. In March, the School District delayed computer-based testing for two days after students were unable to log into the state’s portal due to technical issues with the vendor. A phased implementation would allow more time for the state and school districts to work out potential issues with computer-based tests, and eliminate the delays and loss of instructional time that were experienced in the last school year. • Use of FSA results to evaluate teacher and school performance. Some classes may have been disproportionately affected by test administration issues, but since there is not a reliable way to measure those effects, results for those schools or classrooms would be skewed. Teachers and schools should not be judged on their performance if the test’s administration had serious system issues affecting a significant number of schools. “Assessments are a valuable tool, but the way we are administering them in Florida needs to change,” Superintendent Robert M. Avossa said. “The Legislature needs to take a hard look at how often they are testing students, and how those assessments align with what is being taught in our classrooms.” Even before problems emerged with the FSA, the School District and the School Board have sounded the alarm against too many tests and the high-stakes nature of the assessments. School District leaders last year reduced the number of district-required assessments to lessen the burden on students, and the School Board in September passed a resolution on accountability that called on state leaders to delay the use of FSA results in determining student promotion, graduation or for teacher evaluation.

Objections Raised Over Monthly Meeting During Jewish Holiday

Man Robs Wells Fargo Bank On Thursday, September 10 at just before 2:00 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank, 7531 North Federal Highway. Employees told detectives that a male entered the bank, presented a note to the teller and demanded money. The suspect showed the teller a small silver object, which he said was a grenade, but which may have been a small flashlight. The suspect handed the teller a white bag with a blue logo on it

and told the teller to put the cash in it. The suspect left in an unknown direction with an undetermined amount of money. The suspect is described as a white male in his mid to late 40’s, about 6’ tall, 220 pounds, and he was wearing a white shirt, blue pants, and a white fisherman-style hat. If anyone has information about this crime, they are asked to call Detective Scott Hanley at (561) 338-1344 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

FAU to Celebrate United Nations International Day of Peace By CRA News Service

Government officials have long crossed swords over the observance of the Jewish high holy days of Rosh Hashana. And now the co-founders of the area’s largest independent group of PR, marketing and communications professionals find themselves at odds over the same issue. Barry Epstein, co-founder of the nonprofit Gold Coast public relations council, thinks the club should cancel its monthly luncheon meeting on Tuesday, considering it is the second day of Rosh Hashana, one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar. Calling it insensitive and insulting to the Jewish community, Epstein reached out to fellow co-founder Gary Schweikhart, and a past president of the group, which they founded in 2003. “I think that this is a really offensive to all the Jewish people,” Epstein said. “Every other group that I know who scheduled events that week have rescheduled their programs. I asked Gary, ‘Would you have scheduled something on Good Friday?’” Schweikhart said he had no problems with foregoing this month’s luncheon but an informal poll of the members showed that Epstein was the only one who wanted the change, he added. “I invited him to come to Board of Directors meeting and share his concern, but he did not come,” Schweikhart said on Monday. Had the Board of Directors objected to the meeting, ‘We definitely would have post-

poned the event,” he added. Epstein said he wanted to attend the meeting but did not have a ride, as he no longer drives because of health reasons. Meanwhile, Epstein was so hot he fired off a missive on Monday resigning from the group. “I hereby resign from the Gold Coast public relations council due to the inaction of the board to observe the Jewish New Year holiday,” he wrote. “Please share this with the board and members informing them of the reason.” The Jewish new year, Rosh Hashana, began Sunday at sundown and ended Tuesday evening at sundown.. Each year, the two-day holiday falls on a different day since the Hebrew calendar determines the date. Even though the date changes, the holiday tends to fall between Labor Day and Columbus Day and lasts for two days. Most Reform congregations in North America celebrate Rosh Hashana for one day, Epstein said. In the Orthodox and Conservative movements — and, to a lesser extent, among Reform Jews — the second day of Rosh Hashana is considered as stringent as the first, Epstein added. Each year, many school districts across the country that serve large Jewish populations, have found themselves in public squabble after failing to observe the day. Palm Beach County public schools were closed Monday in observance of the holiday.

Florida Atlantic University will host a United Nations International Day of Peace celebration on Monday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The event will include a performance of “With Their Voices Raised,” along with the launch of the FAU Kindness Campaign, introduced by FAU First Lady Carolyn Kelly; Robin Rubin, of FAU’s School of Social Work; and Bill Trapani, of FAU’s Agora Project. There also will be remarks from Lalita Janke, board president of the U.S. National Committee for U.N. Women, and the District Governor of Rotary International, Mr. B. Eugene Burkett, who will greet the South Florida Rotarians in attendance and speak briefly on the relationship between Rotary and the U.N. International Day of Peace. “With Their Voices Raised” is a theater documentary based on the stories of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima survivors. The documentary is testimony to the power of the human spirit to endure, thrive, and for these survivors, pursue a lifelong desire for

reconciliation and peace in the aftermath of bombings that marked the beginning and end of the United States’ involvement in WWII. Hawaiian youth actors who performed Voices at the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor will join students from South Florida to create a thoughtprovoking, bridge-building Peace Day experience. Following the performance, there will be discussion led by Barb Schmidt, international mindfulness activist and founder of Peaceful Mind/Peaceful Life; Patricia Liehr, Ph.D., professor in FAU’s College of Nursing; and Kate Morris, playwright for “With Their Voices Raised.” The theme for this year’s U.N. International Day of Peace is “Partnerships for Peace, Dignity for All.” The event at FAU is sponsored by the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative with funding from the Lynn, Wold, Schmidt Peace Studies Endowment. “Walt Before Mickey” Explores the Man

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

Girls Night Out Event Some of my Black Hat Diva’s and friends enjoyed a delicious lobster dinner at the Out of Denmark restaurant in Delray Beach. We feasted on a huge 2 lb. lobster, corn on the cob, potato and caesar salad. The dessert was an awesome Danish cake. A fun evening enjoyed by all.

Labor Day Luau Party Our annual Labor day Holiday party was held at the Saturnia Clubhouse today. A large crowd of neighbors and guests enjoyed Asian and American food, hula and fire dancers and a great fun day. We had a storm pass thru so most of the events took place inside. They had the fire dancers dance outside when the rain stopped so they would not set off the smoke detectors inside.

The script is by Armando Gutierrez from Miami and Arthur L. Bernstein from Palm Beach. Walt’s brother Roy is played by Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”). One thing I learned from this movie was the importance of Roy Disney to the success of Walt Disney Productions. He in essence was the business side of the enterprise. Walt was the creative dreamer. I met Roy Disney years ago at the Cartoon Museum in Boca Raton. He was a very modest, quiet man, and Heder nails him pretty well. Ub Iwerks, the little-heralded original partner of Disney, is played by Armando Gutierrez. If you don’t care much about Walt Disney the man, this film will not interest you. I’ve read about the dark side of Walt Disney many times, but you won’t find that here. He comes across as a sunny, all-American hero.

Ever wonder what Walt Disney did before Mickey Mouse shot him to international fame in 1928 with “Steamboat Willie?” Wonder no more. Disney’s lean early years are dramatized in “Walt Before Mickey,” a bio pic by Arthur L. Bernstein and Armando Gutierrez. The short answer is struggle. Walt Disney was no overnight success. “My father thought I was the black sheep of the family,” Walt confessed at story’s beginning in 1919. He is played by Thomas Ian Nicholas, who may be familiar from ”American Pie” and its sequel. Walt was already in love with movies, though his ambition was to be an artist. It took him ten years of attempts and setbacks, but he was finally able to realize both dreams together. “Walt Before Mickey” is done as a straight biography by Khoa Le, who directed the “American Pie” movies. The movie was shot in Florida in Sanford and Deland.

DIVORCE FLORIDA STYLE By Mike Gora

By Ted Bernstein

Married? Q:

Fifteen years ago, I married a man in Ft. Lauderdale. We have two boys, thirteen and eleven years old. We own a successful business in which we both work. We have a large home, savings in a brokerage account, a retirement account, a fine art collection, a house full of furniture, and a couple of upscale cars. My husband was born and raised in a small town in Texas. He told me that he had been married before, but had been divorced, went into the Navy, and when he was discharged, moved to Ft. Lauderdale. Two months ago, his first wife served him with divorce papers. The papers filed in Ft. Lauderdale, declared that he and she had a child, which she had raised, now seventeen years old. She asked for alimony, child support, and back child support, and distribution of any property he had acquired during their marriage. We hired an attorney. The woman’s attorney told ours that the first wife had filed papers in Okalahoma, while my husband was in the Navy, but never followed through with them. She had lived with another man for years, but the son’s age made it clear that the boy was my husband’s son. Are my husband and I legally married? Since Texas has common law marriage, is she married to the man she has lived with? Can my husband be responsible for seventeen years of back child support to this woman? Alimony? Distribution of Property, which we have earned and saved? What rights would I have against him if we ever got divorced?

A:

If the woman in Okalahoma had not followed through with the original divorce, and no divorce judgment ever ended their marriage, you and your husband are not legally married. Since a person cannot be married to two people at the same time, the other woman and her live in cannot be married under Texas common law, or any other way. Your questions about his “wife’s” rights to alimony, child support, and equitable distribution of property that you and he now own are complex and driven by the facts concerning her relationship with the other man, whether or not she tried to find your “husband” over the last many years, and whether she could have found him if she had tried. If you and your husband own your titled property in joint names, it would

be harder for her to establish an interest. Your “husband’s” largest jeopardy might be for back child support. If the woman never tried to find him, or if she has always known where he could be served and never reached out to him for child support she may be barred from seeking it now, as child support can be waived under these narrow circumstances. If she had applied and received welfare payments for the child, the State of Texas might have a claim for reimbursement. It is less likely that she would be able to obtain an alimony award against your “husband”, or a distribution of property accumulated between you and your husband during the marriage. These rights, while statutory, in Texas and in Florida are based in equity (fairness) as well as in statute. She has lived with at least one other man, and perhaps more, while you and your husband earned the income, and accumulated your property, while working together. As to your right to claim these rights against your husband in a later legal action, Florida case law provides equitable remedies to a person who invests years in a marriage, only to find out that he or she is not legally married. Equitable alimony, or alimony by estopple, may be provided to you under such circumstances, if she can prove that she had no reason to believe that her “husband” had never legally divorced. This result will occur whether or not the “husband” had intentionally defrauded his wife or had erroneously depended on his first wife to complete the divorce proceedings. The right to distribution of property, which would have been marital, if the parties had legally been married, can be established through the construction by the court, or the parties’ settlement agreement, of a trust. Florida divorce law is designed to “default” to a fair, evenhanded, resolution of the marital relationships. It is, however, based on equitable principles broad enough and flexible enough to protect those who innocently believe that they are married, but are not. If you plan to stay together, it is suggested that after the divorce case is over, the two of you enter into a prenuptial agreement describing what happened, and re-establishing all rights between you, before you enter into a legal marriage.

Take Charge With Income You Cannot Outlive

Does your retirement plan provide you with enough guaranteed lifetime income that is not vulnerable to loss, regardless of market conditions or how long you live? Most retirement age Americans lack sufficient levels of guaranteed, lifetime income. For 65 year old retirees, life expectancy is approaching 90 and that is having a significant impact on retirement planning. Too many people are exposed to longevity risk, the risk of outliving their assets during retirement. With over 30 years of experience in risk management, wealth planning and thousands of clients helped, I educate people about the financial implications of longevity risk and about the solutions designed to minimize its affects. A multiplier of all the other risks during retirement, nothing is more important in retirement planning than protecting your assets against this risk. Keep your eye on the big picture – your security in retirement. A lack of awareness and understanding about guaranteed income solutions is keeping an alarming number of people at risk during retirement. Most people feel safer and more secure with adequate amounts of guaranteed lifetime income. Without it, you are missing a key component of a balanced retirement plan. With it, your future is anchored in security, allowing you to consider more risk in other areas. An experienced specialist in guaranteed income solutions can help you determine the appropriate amount of income for your specific retirement plan. What is more important to you now; growing your assets or protecting them from loss? National statistics confirm that 85% of us believe guaranteed lifetime income should be the cornerstone of a properly structured retirement plan, yet only 15% of Americans own longevity solutions. The return of market volatility and meaningful portfolio losses is often the motivation many people need to take action. Do not let the importance of this decision prevent you from doing what is necessary to protect your lifestyle. A Private Pension Account – how does it work? In exchange for a lump-sum payment to an insurance company, a longevity annuity is a contract making payments to you for the rest of your life, regardless of how long

you live. The longer the insurance company holds your money before starting to pay you this income, the higher the tax advantaged payments will be. Structured properly, there is no principal risk and your beneficiaries will inherit unpaid principal. These special contracts are not the same as tax deferred accumulation annuities that are used for growth. Pick up any recent financial publication and you will find financial experts advocating the benefits of longevity annuities. In fact, Fortune Magazine has called “2015 – The Year of the Longevity Annuity.” Some offer extraordinary advantages, such as long term care riders that double the amount of income you receive when you need it most. And, for anyone with equities in retirement plans, the withdrawals you are required to take are not guaranteed income because they are exposed to market risk. Many couples rightfully worry about how their spouse will manage their investments once they are alone. Due to diminishing cognitive functions, it becomes increasingly more difficult to manage or oversee an investment portfolio at 75 than it was at 65 and dramatically harder at 90. Guaranteed lifetime income alleviates that concern, providing financial stability for the remainder of your spouse’s life. There has never been a better time to protect your assets. Today’s payout rates are likely to be the highest you will receive for the rest of your life as more insurance companies begin using current life expectancy tables. I encourage you to seek the counsel of a trained professional, one specializing in strategies that protect you against the risks of living too long. This is not the type of expertise offered by attorneys, accountants or investment managers, all of whom are valuable in their respective areas. To learn more about these solutions, please email me at: TB@LifeCyclePlanners.com, or call me at, 561-988-8984 or visit us at www. LifeCycleFinancialPlanners.com. Delray Beach Police Threatened After Arresting Intoxicated Patrol At Downtown Bar

By Jason Schwartz

The Delray Beach Police Department has been receiving a barrage of phone calls and threats after a cellphone video posting of officers arresting a Weston man went viral over the holiday weekend. In the one-minute video, police officers can be seen scuffling with an intoxicated man as they tried to put him in handcuffs. Officers could be heard yelling “Stop fighting with us” as well as barks from a police K-9. But a Facebook posting with the video accuse the officers of brutality. “From what I saw, he was clearly unarmed,” wrote Nick Palermo, who works at a nearby restaurant and captured the incident on his cell phone. “Six police officers tackled him to the floor and repetitively punched and kicked him, and to make matters worse they did the K-9 unit to come out and after the man in already in handcuffs they let the dog go at it on his face. I just don’t think that after a man is already in handcuffs on the ground that they need a dog to bite him and make him bleed out.” That post triggered the calls, which did not

sit too well with police brass. “To the individuals that called this department and threatened our officers, and our profession, we will find out who you guys are and we will go ahead and arrest you,” Police Chief Jeffrey Goldman said of the threats. “Some of [the threats] were as graphic as basically stating they will shoot officers in the face.” The incident at Il Bacio began at 12:48 a.m. Monday when employees at the bar asked a police officer working an off-duty detail to remove an intoxicated patron, who later was identified as Mason Courson. Courson, 19, had allegedly punched the owner of the bar, thrown him to the ground and was yelling at the owner when the officer arrived, police said. When officers caught up with him, Courson aggressively refused to be handcuffed, punched, kicked and attempted to pull away, police said. He also kept his hands tucked under his chest, police said. Scenarios such as that can be dangerous for an officer, especially considering Courson had already shown a propensity for violence, Goldman said. “I can tell you those aren’t good situations for officers when hands are not seen. The guy had already punched an officer, they’ve asked him to remove his hands from his body, he didn’t do it.” Goldman denied allegations that the police K-9 mauled Courson. Instead, he said the dog bit him on the arm when he resisted arrest. Courson was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. He is also accused of kicking an emergency nurse while being medically cleared, police said. Courson was charged with assault and battery on an officer, disorderly intoxication, resisting arrest and marijuana possession. He was released from the Palm Beach County jail on $22,500 on Monday.

Despite Record-Breaking Crowd, Owls Fall to Hurricanes 40-22

Photos by Bob Markey II

The Florida Atlantic football team challenged Miami, but lost 44-20 at FAU Football Stadium on Friday night. The game took place in front of a record setting crowd of 30,321 fans. “Obviously, it’s hard to win a game with that many turnovers. All the credit in the world goes to Miami. They’re a heck of a football team. I think Al Golden has done a tremendous job and deserves a lot of credit,” said FAU Head Football Coach Charlie Partridge. “There were times when I was very proud of our football team...we proved that we can play with the likes of bigger conference schools.” UM got on the board first with a four yard touchdown run, but an FAU Greg Joseph field goal cut the lead to 7-3 late in the first quarter. The game was then delayed for just over an hour due to lightning in the area. After a second Hurricane touchdown made the score 14-3, the Owls responded with a 10-play, 83-yard drive capped off with a Nate Terry touchdown catch to pull within four at 14-10. A Michael Badgley 48-yard field goal once again pushed the UM lead to a touchdown, 17-10. However, the Owls

responded with another 10-play drive, this one covering 85 yards, to tie to the score at 17 with 3:55 remaining in the half. After forcing a UM punt, the Owls moved the ball to the 27 before a turnover led to a UM field goal, giving the Hurricanes a 20-17 lead. After an exchange of three-andouts, the Owls muffed a punt, allowing UM to take over on the FAU 16 yard line. The Hurricane offense stalled and a missed field goal allowed the Owls to escape unscathed. FAU took the opening drive of the second half to the UM nine and tied the game with a 32-yard field goal by Joseph. Following the field goal, the Hurricanes scored 24 unanswered points to account for the final margin. Jeff Driskel was 17-30-2 overall for 155 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate action. Jay Warren rushed for a career-high 132 yards and a touchdown. Greg Howell added 78 yards on 13 carries. The game was the largest ever to attend a football game in Palm Beach County. FAU will return home on Saturday, Sept. 19 to host Buffalo. The game starts at noon and will air on ASN.

Boca Raton FC Learns its First 2016 Open Cup Opponent

Earlier this week U.S. Soccer revealed the Open Qualifying Round opponent of to 2015 American Premier Soccer League Champions, Boca Raton FC. The tournament will begin for Boca Raton FC on October 25 at 4:30pm as they battle Real Miami at St. John Bosco Football Stadium, in Miami. As a fourth division club, Boca Raton FC begins their journey through the U.S. Open Cup much earlier than other teams like the L.A. Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, or Orlando City. The first two qualifying rounds of the U.S. Open Cup take play in October and November of this year, and if Boca Raton FC advances past these two rounds, they will await the draw of the MLS, NASL, and USL teams that will take place in January of 2016 to determine their next opponent. “To play in the U.S. Open Cup is tremendous for our club,” says head coach Marcelo Castillo. “This is an important tournament for us as it gives us exposure on a national level.” “Our goal from the start of the season was to win it and make the U.S. Open Cup,” says majority owner, Douglas Heizer. “Not everyone who wants to play in the U.S. Open Cup gets to play.” Over 400 clubs attempt a berth in the U.S. Open Cup, but not all are awarded a spot. Many criteria’s must be met for a club to be awarded a spot in the third-longest running national tournament in the world.

Although soccer in the United States doesn’t have the same history as other countries around the world, the U.S. can still claim the third-oldest continuously running national tournament. The first U.S. Open Cup, then called the National Challenge Cup, was played in 1914 and has continued every year since. England’s FA Cup is the oldest association tournament in the world, beginning play in 1871. It’s not often that lower division teams get a chance to knock off one of the big dogs of American soccer. MLS teams enter in the fourth round of the tournament and every year the 16 remaining NASL, USL, and amateur clubs get a shot. In 2014, four MLS clubs were knocked out in the fourth round, and two NASL clubs made it all the way to the quarterfinals. The only non-MLS club to win the tournament since MLS teams began competing in 1996 was the 1999 Rochester Rhinos of the A-League (2nd division). However, despite the lack success of lower division clubs, the national media exposure that a club receives in playing in the U.S. Open Cup is enough to launch the career of some players that otherwise would have gone unnoticed in the lower divisions. “Many of our players have a hunger to make it to the second, and even the first division,” says Castillo. “This tournament is their window into the soccer world and will also help put the Boca Raton FC name in places that otherwise would not have heard of our club.”

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers six game unbeaten streak came to an end Saturday night in a 2-0 loss to the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season leaders Ottawa Fury FC in front of 3,773 fans at Lockhart Stadium. Second-half strikes doomed Fort Lauderdale after a stout Fury defense blanked the hosts for the entire 90 minutes. The Strikers played a man short for the final 18 minutes of the match after PC was shown a second yellow card. While the Strikers had the better of possession in the first half, they were unable to capitalize. “I told them (players), if we can’t score in the first half against this team, then it’s going to be very tough for us,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “This is one of the best teams in the league right now.” It was the third match for the Strikers in one week, and fatigue played a part in the second stanza of the loss. For the first time this year Fort Lauderdale fielded the same

starting XI in consecutive matches. “For us, tiredness was an issue,” Kronsteiner added. “Two games in one week is not really easy.” Former Strikers forward Aly Alberto Hassan opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who assisted on the opener, added an insurance goal for the visitors nine minutes from time. Goalkeeper Josh Ford kept the result at a minimum as he made a couple of good saves down the stretch as Fort Lauderdale threw numbers forward in search of a goal. The loss was the first for the Strikers in six matches against Ottawa. The sides played to a scoreless tie last Saturday. Fort Lauderdale slips to fifth place in the Combined Standings, with 31 points and an 8-7-8 (W-T-L) record. The Strikers will be at home for their third straight match next Saturday night against Minnesota United FC. Tickets are available for Saturday’s match and all remaining Fort Lauderdale home games at Strikers.com.
