Held at The Addison in Boca Raton, the event kicked off the month-long Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce Festival Days and benefited the Bowl’s Charity Partner Spirit of Giving.

• The School District of Palm Beach County is an A-rated district, and has the highest number of District-operated “A” schools when compared with other large urban school districts. According to preliminary school grades released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Education, the District ranks highest in Florida on total number of points earned when compared with other large urban districts. Boca Raton Fire Recue Explorer Post 315 is a program for youth that are ages 14-21 who are interested in the Fire

Service. The goal of the program is to transform youth from a group of kids to an organization of young adults with discipline, dedication, and passion for the fire service. We produce the most highly qualified and well-prepared candidates that the fire service could ever ask for.

These young men and women will accomplish all of this while still in high school, by attending weekly meetings where we train and drill in firefighting operations and emergency medical services. The Explorers also volunteer in the community and participate in a ridealong program, in which they respond to emergency calls with our firefighter/paramedics. The title "Explorer" is earned, not given, and it is synonymous with hard work and professionalism. Anyone who has the privilege of earning that title will hold on to life lessons and apply them to anything that they choose to pursue, whether in the fire service, college, or other career opportunity.

Palm Beach County schools will be closed on Tuesday, August 28, after the School Board approved a revision to the 2018-2019 school calendar.

August 28 is Primary Election Day in Florida, and many School District of Palm Beach County schools are used as polling places. The School Board proposed the change following discussions

Chosen through an open-tothe-public round of online voting, the eight semi-finalists, ranging in age from 13 to 55, hailed from Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, Lake Worth, Miami, Tamarac and West Palm Beach.

Each performed a song of their choice for the live audience and a combination of audience votes and judges selections determined the top three: Emma Brown, 14, Lake Worth; Adrianna Foster, 32, Miami and Mikaylah O’Brien,13, Boca Raton. The three finalists took to the stage once more to sing the National Anthem, so that the judges could determine the ultimate competition “winner”: Adrianna Foster.

The 2018 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl Idol looks forward to performing the National Anthem during opening ceremonies to a stadium crowd prior to the game being televised nationally. She will receive10 game tickets for family and friends which include sideline access during the performance.

singing professionally for the past 18 years and is often invited by a variety of nonprofits to open their events by performing the National Anthem. Foster shared that “singing is her love language, and the way she communicates her passion for life with others.” She is honored to be given the opportunity to sing the anthem of “the land she calls home” during Bowl opening ceremonies.

ESPN Radio Personality Josh Cohen served as Master of Ceremonies with audience interaction spirited by ESPN on-air teammate Ken LaVicka; those serving on the panel of judges were: • Kendra Erika, pop singer/songwriter, Billboard recording artist and former Bowl game National Anthem performer • Adam Marshall, partner, Marshall Socarras Grant, the Idol competition’s presenting sponsor • Carrie Simpson, professional performer, current associate professor at the Lynn University College of Arts and Sciences and creative director for the Annual Celebration of the Arts • Molly Vogel, theater, film, TV and vocal performer

Extraordinary Nonprofit Serving as Bridge to Address Food Insecurity

The Rev. Dan West knows that hiding in the shadow of Palm Beach County’s ranking as one of the five most affluent counties in Florida, is a dark problem affecting residents: food insecurity.

He’ll tell you that Florida ranks 12th in the country for food deprivation, that more than 710,000 South Floridians have no clue where their next meal will come from, and even worse, right here in our county, 60,390 children go to bed hungry every night.

Realizing that hunger does not take a day off, Pastor Dan, as he is affectionately called, says he cannot afford to take a break either.

“There is a great need out here in the world and we are doing God’s work,” says Pastor Dan, a man of integrity who founded Restoration

Bridge International in 2005 to feed the area’s needy.

He uses his platform as president of the ministry to put a dent in the food shortage in our community by bringing hope to hurting people.

Each day, from as early as daybreak, his cadre of volunteers pick up donated food from several local grocers and retail partners such as Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Publix, Target, Costco Wholesale and Whole Foods in vans and trucks.

They then sort and pack them in banana boxes at their central distribution site west of Lantana.

Another group delivers them to individuals, families, and their nonprofit partners across the county.

They have not skipped a beat in addressing this amazing feat since

they began their mission. Their role is often taken for granted and they do a masterful job.

It is not unusual to see Pastor Dan out picking up food or sorting food at the warehouse.

Last year, Restoration Bridge gave away 5 million pounds of food through its warehouse and its satellite sites in partnership with other agencies.

One of the recipients is Arms of Hope Community, Inc., a Lake Worth-based nonprofit that serves meals and offers social services.

Restoration Bridge is also helping in the war against child hunger in Palm Beach County’s schools. Each week the organization gives food to KOP Mentoring Network, a Delray Beach-based

nonprofit, to help students who might otherwise go hungry. The organization provides the children and their parents with food for the weekends.

Even with the great work Pastor Dan is doing, Restoration Bridge has some challenges. With the increase in demand for food comes a need for more help with daily operations and volunteers are hard to find. They always need help for at least four hours on specific day(s) of the week. They also desperately need drivers with CDL licenses daily from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The organization also needs a refrigerated truck as the one they own is broken and costs an arm and a leg to repair, officials say.

Happiness Need not be Seasonal!

Those who are truly happy in life, have come to realize that happiness need not be an occasional experience, nor a seasonal happening!

It can and should be a constant in the life of any individual. It is never dependent on what occurs outside of self but, rather, it is controlled by one’s inward understandings and dispositions, regardless of circumstances affecting one’s life!

Rather than occurring when certain things happen or don’t happen, true happiness is a personal choice. Outward conditions may be horrendous, difficulties of all kinds may surround anyone, but even then

that individual can be truly happy, knowing that what is transitory is what is difficult, while happiness is a chosen condition which can and should remain permanent.

To the extent that you wisely define what is true happiness for you, it becomes much harder for anyone else to take it away from you.

Furthermore, happiness is dynamic, not static! When it is soundly experienced, happiness often gives birth to additional manifestations of itself.

Always let your personal happiness be a reflection of what God wishes for you to enjoy; short of that, it is just a caricature of hap-

piness. Tragically, it is precisely the caricature that so many people today are after, rather than the true experience. Yet, it’s only the legitimate expression of true happiness that is capable of providing what every individual, anywhere on earth, longs to possess!

One is truly happy whose life is in constant advancement toward anything higher and superior to what one possesses at any moment, be it an object or a significant idea. Ultimately, lasting happiness is exceedingly more due to what our willing service for others produces in them, than merely on what we acquire for

ourselves! Happiness should outlast the experiences that gave birth to it, and excel them!

Best-selling author, Matthew Kelly, offers sound advice to all those desirous of retaining the happiness they’ve already achieved, and can still enhance it more: “We are only here on earth for the blink of an eye. This is not our home. That’s why the happiness that God wants and created us for is very different from the fleeting happiness and momentary pleasures of this world.”

I fully concur, and hope you will as well!

The Challenge Of Doing Business–By Faith

Faith is an interesting concept – and a challenging reality. When we are involved in a worship service, faith seems so simple. We sing songs that affirm our faith in God. We might repeat faith declarations that date back centuries. We hear uplifting spiritual messages that remind us of biblical promises we can embrace by faith. But then Monday arrives, and we find ourselves back in the workplace.

How simple is faith then?

Over the years I have encountered many people who express and demonstrate much faith in spiritual settings, but seem to abandon their beliefs in the so-called “secular world.” Some church traditions have even taught a divide between the sacred and the secular, but the Scriptures make no such claim.

In fact, Colossians 3:23 boldly instructs, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord not for men.”Faith is not to be confined to one day a week.

But let’s be real. In the midst of business setbacks, whether failing to secure an important contract, not being able to close a much-anticipated sale, struggling to meet a deadline, or failing to receive a much-desired promotion, our faith in God and His direction might not seem as strong as we thought it was while in a safe, worshipful environment. Then we face a dilemma, because “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by deeds, is dead,” as James 2:17 states.

When I think of people of faith, one who comes to mind is George Muller (1805-1898), who cared for more than 10,000 orphans over his lifetime, and established 117 schools which offered Christian education to more than 120,000 children. What stands out to me is not only the Christian-based humanitarian work that consumed his life, but also the

strong faith that guided his actions every day.

Citing the impact of faith on his work, Muller wrote, “Trusting the Lord for the supply of my temporal needs keeps me from anxious thoughts like, ‘Will my salary last and will I have enough for next month?’ In this freedom I am able to say, ‘My Lord is not limited. He knows my present situation, and He can supply all I need.’ Rather than causing anxiety, living by faith in God alone keeps my heart in perfect peace.”

Is this the attitude you take when thinking about your daily needs, whether at work, in your family, or for other personal matters? Maybe it will help for us to consider some of the things the Bible tells us about what could be termed “working faith”:

What faith really is. Faith in God, His direction and provision is not tangible, but rather a confident assurance, or earnest expectation, that what He has promised will be fulfilled. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”(Hebrews 11:1). Another translation of this verse states, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Another passage, Romans8:24, elaborates by connecting faith to hope: “But hope that is seen is no hope at all.

Who hopes for what they already have?”

Second Tri-Rail Location in Boca Raton Selected

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced the location for Boca Raton’s second Tri-Rail station, which will be on Military Trail and Northwest 19th Street, the previous site of King’s Gourmet Deli.

Boca Raton currently has one Tri-Rail station at Yamato Road, which happens to be the system’s busiest station with well over one thousand riders per day.

It is located just north of the proposed new station.

The announcement was made last Wednesday at a public meeting at the Spanish River Library after the location was narrowed down from an initial list of seven sites. Five of them were ruled out rather quickly, until the eventual chosen site and one at the northern Town Center Circle were taken into heavy consideration.

Ultimately, the King’s Gourmet Deli site was chosen due to its access to Military Trail, as well as its ability to maximize bus storage. Other factors included the room for a kiss and ride drop-off and access to a traffic signal.

SFRTA unveiled that there will be up to 75 parking spaces at the location, along with a bus pullet on Military Trail.

The announcement of the new station comes shortly after a big month for Tri-Rail. During the month of April, Tri-Rail had their highest monthly on-time performance since 2001, with 96.2% of trains staying on schedule. Boca Raton’s

new station could help those statistics even more, giving riders more options for their daily travels.

“We are delighted to finally provide our passengers with the level of service they desire and deserve,” SFRTA Executive Director Jack Stephens said.

“Because of some repairs to the corridor, we were able to relieve some speed restrictions that had impacted [on-time performance].”

Currently, the property for the second Tri-Rail station is owned by Crocker Partners, which means that SFRTA would have to negotiate with them for the 2.12 acre site. The Boca Raton-based developer, which worked on the popular Mizner Park before it was opened in 1991, threatened to sue the City of Boca Raton back in April over issues with the city’s Midtown project. The next month, they moved forward and filed the lawsuit, while also stepping away from being the lead developer.

Even if the acquisition of the property goes smoothly, however, the station will not be ready anytime soon, as it still has to go through multiple stages of planning. Finalization of schematic plans is expected to take place this fall, while design plans will be finalized sometime between 2019 and 2020. The new Boca Raton station could be ready to open for business by 2023 and the estimated total cost would be around $17 million.

Siqueira and Lynn Volleyball Coaching Staff Continue to Shine with Florida HP

Three Lynn University volleyball assistant coaches all helped the Florida High Performance All-Star program to a quality showing at the 2018 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Tulsa last week.

Flavia Siqueira, the lead assistant coach for the Fighting Knights, won her fifth straight championship as head coach of the Girl's National Select team. Lynn volunteer assistant Corey Sarubbi also claimed a gold medal as the top assistant for the Girl's International Youth squad while fellow Blue and White volunteer assistant Ore Pablos served as the top assistant on the Girl's National Youth team.

The Team Florida Indoor HP

All-Star program allows outstanding youth and junior volleyball athletes to play for college coaches and represent the Florida Region at an international volleyball tournament each year called the USA High Performance Championships.

Team Florida produced five teams this year; four girls and one boys.

Each Team Florida all-star team was assigned three coaches, with the majority of them being former or current college coaches.

Siqueira, Sarubbi, and Pablos will all be returning to the Fighting Knights' bench along with head coach Adam Milewski for the 2018 season. Lynn opens the campaign on Friday, Aug. 24, against Valdosta State on the road at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Devin Singletary Named to CFA Preseason Dream Team

College Football America released their Preseason Dream Team on Thursday, including Florida Atlantic University junior running back Devin Singletary on the squad.

CFA's version of a major college All-American team is made up of a starting lineup, second team, reserves and more, for an 85-man roster. Singletary is one of the two "second string" running backs, in other words, a CFA Second Team All-American.

Boca Raton Football Club defeated Heights FC in the APSL Quarterfinals 5-1 on Sunday to move on in the APSL Playoffs.

A brace by Gabriel Diniz, and Matheus Ayrolla, plus a goal by Carlos Meneses were the difference as the Boys in Blue were able to show their dominance over the expansion side, to move Boca Raton FC to the APSL Semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

“We played a great game,” said Coach Villy Washington. “The team was composed and was able to make the opposition pay when they were

caught off-guard.”

Boca Raton FC will now face South Florida FC in the APSL Semifinals as the club looks to head back to the APSL Finals and solidify their APSL dominance with their APSL-record third championship in four years.

“We are taking it one game at a time,” added defender Kevin Byrne.

“We know the success Boca Raton has had in the APSL but we are also cautious and are going to focus only in our upcoming game. South Florida FC has a strong team, they’ve made the finals both in the Summer and Fall of the 2017 Season and we should respect that and prepare for a battle for 90 or more minutes.”
