City of Boca Raton Announces City-Wide COVID-19 Recovery Effort The COVID-19 outbreak has affected many of us in different ways. After five months of adjusting to this new normal, the city of Boca Raton announced their city-wide recovery effort entitled “READY. STEADY. FAU’s Phil Smith Center Honored Florida Atlantic University’s Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise has become the second program within FAU’s College of Business to be named an Oasis of Excellence by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA). The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., honors more than 70 college and university programs nationwide that introduce students to the foundational arts and sciences, American heritage and a diversity of viewpoints. The Phil Smith Center supports chaired professorships, research and educational programs for faculty members and students. The Center hosts courses in economics, finance, management and marketing and hosts distinguished visiting faculty., a lecture series and other educational activities that focus on the principles of free enterprise and how those principles affect growth and prosperity.

The COVID-19 outbreak has affected many of us in different ways. After five months of adjusting to this new normal, the city of Boca Raton announced their city-wide recovery effort entitled “READY. STEADY. BOCA!”
• The School Board of Palm Beach County announced that the Superintendent’s reopening plan for the 2020-2021 school year is approved. After 10.5 hours of deliberation from parents and school board members, the School District will start off the year with distance learning. The district has taken the spread of the virus into account as the average number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased significantly. According to their agenda, when the school district initially closed in mid-March, there were less than 70 new cases per day. • Palm Beach State College has been invited by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in its Second Chance Pell experiment, which will provide more education opportunities for incarcerated individuals in Palm Beach and Martin counties. The initiative, first created in 2015, provides need-based federal Pell grants for individuals in federal and state prisons to enroll in postsecondary programs offered at local colleges and universities or distance learning providers. PBSC is among a new cohort of 67 schools invited to participate this year. • Officials in Palm Beach County are witnessing a massive spike in COVID-19 cases due to gatherings and parties happening after dark at local bars and food establishments. As a result, restaurants, and bars can expect to be closed starting today from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in an effort to issue an order prohibiting the selling of alcoholic beverages and food. • Florida Atlantic University recently announced the appointment of Kelly J. Shannon, associate professor of history and the Chastain-Johnston Middle Eastern Studies Distinguished Professor in Peace Studies, as the new director of FAU’s Peace, Justice, and Human Rights Initiative (PJHR). PJHR’s mission is to work toward developing and sharing the best practices for promoting tolerance and understanding of diverse cultures. It offers a unique multidisciplinary framework operating across the University to invite engagement by all members of the community and external partners in research, scholarship, creative activities, and applied practices that realize a

On July 10, WPTV and Florida Atlantic University’s biology department conducted an experiment to determine the effectiveness of three different popular face coverings against the COVID-19 virus. • Florida Atlantic University Pine Jog Environmental Education Center took a new approach this year to honor winners of its 2020 Green Schools Awards. Foregoing a traditional ceremony, the center created a series of more than 30 award videos to showcase the exceptional efforts of local schools that are “going green” as participants in the center’s nationally recognized Green Schools Recognition Program (GSRP). • The Early Learning Coalition is seeking assistance in helping child care centers serving emergency personnel, and essential workers obtain the necessary supplies they need to stay open safely. During this time of need, The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County has generously received a donation of $10,000 in highly coveted hand sanitizer from the Medical Group of South Florida. • Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced the appointment of Kerry-Ann McDonald, MD, to the medical staff of the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute (LWHWI) and BocaCare® Physician Network. She specializes in benign and malignant breast disease. • Art enthusiasts can expect to be moved this fall by three exhibits that cover a range of topics including sexual assault and its effect on victims. The exhibits, which will be displays at The Art Gallery at Eissey Campus and The Gallery at Lake Worth Campus, showcase stories, ideas and perceptions through paintings, drawings, photography, graphic design and more. They are free and open to the public and feature artwork created by PBSC students and community artists.

ShelterBox provides humanitarian aid in the form of family-sized tents and essential tools to start repairing and rebuilding homes. Instituted in 1997, the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum is known for holding its walk of Recognition ceremony annually. This year will be their 24th year. Thus far, the Walk of Recognition award has been presented to 99 deserving individuals and institutions within the community. Voting Must Be a Priority On Tuesday, voters across Palm Beach County will join other Americans in using the most powerful tool we have to evoke change at the polls. And while we have been focused on the inpact of the COVID-19 pandemic for the past six months, I urge voters to also become fully engaged in the upcoming primary election. As we mourn the recent passing of two towering titans in the civil rights movement U.S. Rep. John Lewis and the Rev. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian - I was inspired and moved as I reflected on their sacrifices, accomplishments and intellect. In his 2017 book, “Across That Bridge: A Vision for Change and the Future of America,” Lewis wrote that “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have” to make change in a democratic society. That explains why the powerful, through
time, have tried so hard to limit its access. Lewis, who died July 17 from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, spent his life working to improve American democracy. At 80, he was the last surviving member of the “Big Six”, the group that included the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and organized the historic civil rights March on Washington in 1963. Rev. Vivian, 95, died from natural causes. Their passing, just hours apart, dealt a major loss for a nation still grappling with protests and demands for racial equality decades later. The pair, like Dr. King and other civil rights activists, had marched together, addressed friendly and hostile audiences together, faced violence together, were arrested, thrown behind bars and beaten. In the face of violent opposition, they led sit-ins, boycotts, marches and Freedom Rides against segregation in the South. At the height of the push for justice, their beatings at the protests galvanized support that led to key changes so we all can have
the right to vote on Tuesday. During a recent discussion with a group of young people, many of them told me they did not plan to vote, primarily because they did not think their votes would make a difference. They cited quite a few horrific events involving the death of blacks, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks. I look at those incidents as a reason to vote, but in their minds, it is a sign that nothing works – that there would absolutely be no redress. While I understood their concerns, I shared with them that politics can feel disingenuous. I can relate to them feeling unwanted or undervalued by their local, state and federal governments at times. It always tickles me as the election season approaches, politicians – many whom went unseen or unheard of during their tenure – would “come out of hiding” to announce their intent to seek another
term in office. As I shared with these young minds, it is easy to feel disenfranchised by the political system, but it does not mean that it is completely broken. In spite of how you feel, it is critical for you to use your right to vote as a person of color, a woman, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or as a United States citizen for the candidate you feel will best respect and fight for you. The post-pandemic community will need strong leadership. One way to ensure we have the right people in office is to vote on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Organizations such as “When We all Vote Palm Beach County Voting Squad” has been doing an outstanding job informing voters of the issues through a series of candidate forums. Regardless of your political affiliation Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or independent - Tuesday is the day to make your voice heard and vote.

Never Try To Be The Smartest Person in the Room There is a common saying, particularly in the world of sports, that “you win with people.” Even the best coach will fail without having quality, skilled players and support staff. The same holds true in the business and professional world. A visionary without a team of people to help in bringing his or her ideas into reality is just a dreamer. Unfortunately, whether it is because they are poor judges of talent, or because they want to protect their own fragile egos, some highranking executives hire only individuals of lesser capabilities. For those “leaders,” it gives a sense of protection from being surpassed by more gifted, better trained and educated staff members. Fortunately, not all CEOs and top executives feel that way. In fact, Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, one of the world’s largest infrastructure companies, feels just the opposite. He stated, “Try never to be the smartest person in the room. are, I suggest you invite smarter people…or find a different room.” That says a lot about Dell and other leaders like him. First of all, they are humble enough to not feel threatened by people who know more or can do more than he can. Second, they understand that for the benefit of the company and all of its stakeholders, they have the obligation to present the best product possible – and that would require having individuals on the team with expertise in some areas that they lack. And third, the true mark of a good leader is not accomplishing all the work alone, but recruiting the best people to share the load. I recall the days when I was a magazine editor. For me, some of the most enjoyable, exhilarating days were when we held planning meetings for each issue. We would take the articles and columns that had been written, then brainstorm about titles, illustrations and other graphics to give them as much reader ap-
peal as possible. Although I had some strong opinions about some things, I recognized the graphic designers would come up with better visual concepts than I could. They brought compelling, creative ideas I could never have imagined. Some people in the room were more detail-oriented than I was, so they noticed things I probably would have let fall through the proverbial “cracks.” And others just offered perspectives I never would have considered. When the magazine was produced and printed, it became clear, as I heard a wise person say, that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” The Scriptures have much to say about this: Trusting in God can provide the humility needed. Some in leadership positions may fear being “shown up” by others and losing their positions of authority and responsibility. However, trusting in God gives us the confidence to believe He has directed the right people in our lives at the right time, even in the work-

place. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5:6). Recognizing the gifts and contributions of others. Whether in a family, a church, or a company, everyone has a specific, important role to play. Even seemingly lesser parts are critical for producing the desired end result. “Now the body is not made up of one part but of many…. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?… But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be…” (1 Corinthians 12:14-20). The more people involved, the more we can get done. PBC Community Services Provides Help for Residents Facing Eviction
The Palm Beach County Community Services Department has contracted with the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Inc. and Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. to provide county residents with free legal representation and assistance in handling landlord/tenant matters and past due payments through the Rapid Response Eviction Assistance Project (RREAP). The program is part of the CARES Act COVID-19. Through the COVID-19 RREAP, the agencies will assist individuals who have received a three-day notice or demand for rent from their landlord, been served with an eviction lawsuit, or who need help understanding the eviction process. The services include: · Pre-suit mediation between landlords and tenants · Legal advice regarding the eviction process · Referrals for rental assistance · Preparation of responses to an eviction lawsuit · Assistance in negotiating repayment plans, and · Court representation. The COVID-19 RREAP is designed to respond to the housing crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic by mediating disagreements between tenants and property owners. Through this program, parties will be able to construct payment plans, temporary rent reductions, de-
ferred payments or other creative solutions to prevent evictions and ultimately homelessness. The program term is from Aug. 1 through Dec. 30, 2020, and participants can receive up to $10,000 in rental assistance. Eligibility requirements for the program include: · Rental unit must be located in Palm Beach County · Tenant’s income is under 140% of Area Median Income Applicants will need documentation to qualify for the program: · Proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal residents (per CARES Act regulations) · Documentation proving hardship is directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as evidence of loss of income, reduction in hours, or unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic that contributed to the missed rental payments, and
A calendar year has 12 months, but during the summer months many of us experience a notable change in work demands and schedules. Businesses often find employees distracted with their children being home for the summer, taking their annual break from school. Many workers are eagerly anticipating vacations for times of much-needed rest and relaxation. Either way, they receive a break from the daily demands of work. In some cultures, such as in Europe, during the summer months work staffs can take extended holiday breaks from their regular work routine. “Business as usual” slows, or comes to a sudden halt. With this slowdown in the pace and momentum of the work, business teams become shorthanded temporarily. A question then becomes how to use this time most usefully. In a general sense, the conclusion of a school year or time for staff vacations can serve as an excellent time for a restart. This might involve meeting with your staff as they are available, casting vision for the coming months. It becomes a time for reenergizing and refocusing your team. These “down times” can prove to be as important as the periods of concentrated productivity. Offering your team an opportunity to remember why they are there can help your organization in being more productive in the future. The Bible gives a humorous description of people who lacked any focus for their activity: “The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there” (Acts 19:32). While the context was not about people in business, it
could describe corporate teams who have become so busy they have forgotten their overall mission and goals. There is a temptation to insist on being busy for the sake of being busy. This brings to mind the boss who ran through the office shouting, “Don’t just stand there! Do something! Even if it’s wrong!” Sadly, this can be result in waste of effort and energy, and unintended lack of productivity. As a passage in the Bible’s Old Testament states so well, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…. A time to plant and a time to uproot…a time to tear down and a time to build…a time to tear and a time to mend…a time to be silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-7). There is a time for moving forward – and should be a time for pausing to review how far we have come and where we hope to be going. We see this theme, the recognition of times when starting over is necessary, recurring in the Bible. For instance, after spending many years building an ark and then experiencing the great flood, Noah needed a restart. We see him receiving it in Genesis 9:1, “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fi ll the earth.’” This signified the time for mankind’s literal restart. Your organization might not have just endured a great flood – or a major calamity – but a lull in the usual work routine should be welcomed. City of Boca Raton Announces CityWide COVID-19 Recovery Effort The COVID-19 outbreak has affected many of us in different ways. After five months of adjusting to this new normal, the city of Boca Raton announced their city-wide recovery effort entitled “READY. STEADY. BOCA!” This idea was introduced in a recent virtual presentation by Mayor Scott Singer to over 300 Boca Raton Chamber members, local businesses and community members. “The reopening campaign is a new initiative designed to carefully guide and remind residents, businesses and visitors about responsible safety precautions to ensure a continued culture of health,” according to the media release. Additionally, READY. STEADY. BOCA! plans to guide the community to navigate a successful reopening by both balancing caution and action. By emphasizing safety and a steadfast approach, the slogan will serve as a reminder of social responsibility, community wellbeing and optimistic recovery. As part of this initiative, the City is asking residents, visitors and businesses to show their support by taking the READY. STEADY. BOCA! pledge. Community
partners such as the Boca Raton Airport Authority, Boca Raton Innovation Campus, Baptist Health South Florida – Boca Raton Regional Hospital and the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce have already pledged their commitment. FAU’s Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise Honored Florida Atlantic University’s Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise has become the second program within FAU’s College of Business to be named an Oasis of Excellence by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA). The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., honors more than 70 college and university programs nationwide that introduce students to the foundational arts and sciences, American heritage and a diversity of viewpoints. The Phil Smith Center supports chaired professorships, research and educational programs for faculty members and students. The Center hosts courses in economics, finance, management and marketing and hosts distinguished visiting faculty, a lecture series and other educational activities that focus on the principles of free enterprise and how those principles affect growth and prosperity. “ACTA is a fantastic organization that connects students, alumni and others who care deeply about maintaining high quality in research centers on college campuses,” said Daniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Business. “We are particularly pleased with this recognition of our efforts to create opportunities for our students and faculty.” FAU’s Adams Center for Entrepreneurship was honored by ACTA last fall. ACTA started its Oasis of Excellence pro-
gram in 2014. “I am proud to see the work of the Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise, established through the generosity of one of our most distinguished alumni, earn this national recognition from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni,” FAU President John Kelly said. Michael Poliakoff, president of ACTA, noted that the program’s rigorous curriculum will prepare students for the challenges ahead. “In an age too often defined by ignorance, programs like the Phil Smith Center ensure that students who enter America’s higher education system can grow into the informed citizens our nation needs,” he said. Phil Smith, who passed away in 2016, was president and CEO of Phil Smith Automotive Group, and was deeply involved as a leader in the South Florida business and civic community. He graduated from FAU in 1969 and was named a distinguished alumnus of the College of Business in 2015. He also served as a member of the FAU Foundation Board. “Phil would be proud to see this recognition for the Center that bears his name and which promotes our FAU students’ understanding of the benefits of our American free enterprise system,” said Susan Smith, his widow.

PBSC receives two federal Student Support Services grants Palm Beach State College has been awarded two five-year highly competitive U.S. Department of Education grants totaling over $2.78 million to continue its longstanding TRIO Student Support Services program and to launch a new one solely for veterans. With the first $294,725 per year Student Support Services grant, PBSC will serve 175 low-income, first-generation college students or those with disabilities each year through its existing program, which was initially funded in 2001. Now entering its 20th year at the College, the program provides comprehensive services to help participants stay in school and graduate, including academic tutoring, assistance in course selection, information about financial aid and economic literacy and other support. The new Student Support Services Veterans grant of $261, 888 per year will allow PBSC to provide similar services and support for 120 student veterans who meet the same criteria as participants in the SSS program. The idea is to address and remove barriers specific to their unique needs as they transition from military to civilian and college life. The SSS Veterans program will complement numerous services the College already offers its more than 1,100 veterans and their families through its veterans resource centers at the Lake Worth, Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton campuses. PBSC will be only the second higher edu-
cation institution in Florida and one of only about 14 in the nation with a SSS Veterans program. Student Support Services is one of eight federal TRIO programs, including seven designed to help individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds get on the path to higher education and finish. Every five years, grant recipients must apply for new TRIO grants in a competitive national process, but they are not guaranteed. In addition to SSS, PBSC also operates Upward Bound, Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Centers TRIO programs.
Rowina Petion, PBSC’s Student Support Services program director, said getting funded consistently for two decades validates the quality of PBSC’s program and the need for it. “I strongly believe it is our best practices and commitment to developing our students that allow us to be successful each grant cycle,” Petion said. “We work really hard to edify the students and walk alongside them to ensure that they feel supported and empowered. We eliminate barriers, sharpen skills, and build leaders. Overall, we are intentional and that is what makes
the difference.” Edline Francois, a Delray Beach native, is among the success stories. She completed her A.A. degree at PBSC in 2014, earned a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences from New College of Florida in 2017 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health from Oregon Health & Science University. She plans to go to law school and leverage her background in public health disparities research to work in either health care law or a leadership role in health management and policy. “Student Support Services gave me the foundation that I needed to prioritize, to plan correctly and to network effectively so that I can be where I am,’’ she said. “It gave me the mentorship that I needed to weather the curveballs and storms. If I did not have that foundation, I would not be able to excel and maximize my potential.” Kathy Karran-McCoy, dean of student development, said with the current challenges facing students today, the two grants could not have come at a better time. “I am excited that the College was also awarded the SSS grant for veterans,” she said. “This is an excellent opportunity to foster greater achievement rates in retention and completion for our veterans. By developing and implementing specific support for veterans to facilitate postsecondary completion, the College has another opportunity to positively impact generational health and wealth.”

SPORTS Nassir Selected for Prestigious Fulbright Award
Former Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse team captain Chanel Nassir was one of three recent PBA grads awarded a highly-competitive Fulbright award to teach English overseas. A Fulbright is a highly-selective, prestigious award for international study that aims to foster understanding between U.S. citizens and those of other countries. During their term, recipients live, work, learn and serve with people from their host country. Nassir hails from Lancaster, Pa., and graduated from PBA with a degree in international business in 2020. She is in the first class of Fulbright U.S. Student Program award winners to teach English in Burma. Under the English Teaching Assistant Program, she will begin serving in Burma in January 2021. Nassir will be teaching at the university level. A key piece of the growth of the Sailfish women’s lacrosse program, Nassir credits her years at PBA as integral to her development as both a Fulbright recipient and as an individual with
the ability to impact the world. “I could not feel more confident as I prepare for the Fulbright,” she said, “and I genuinely attribute that to the university’s leadership and faculty. PBA has consistently called out and championed my God-given abilities.” In her athletic career, Nassir has played all 37 games the women’s lacrosse program has played since it was played its first season of competition in 2018. The Conestoga Valley HS product started in 35 of those 37 games as a prominent member of the Sailfish defense. She totaled 41 ground balls, 22 caused turnovers and 11 goals in three seasons for the ‘Fish. Nassir is no stranger to international service, having interned with the Rafiki Africa Foundation and having taught at Light House Academy in Kosele, Kenya, where she initiated the community’s first-ever computer classes. She also studied abroad at the University of Oxford, and through all these endeavors, maintained a near-perfect GPA.
FAU’s Desmond Noel Named Preseason All-C-USA
Florida Atlantic University senior offensive lineman Desmond Noel was named to the 2020 Conference USA preseason team, as announced by C-USA on Tuesday. Noel joined the Owls and the Owls’ offensive line two weeks into the 2019 campaign. The Fort Scott Community College transfer and Cincinnati, Ohio native made an immediate impact, contributing to FAU’s 45-27 win over Charlotte and then as a starter in the next nine games. The Owls would go on to capture the Conference USA and Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl Championships. Noel was part of a line that provided protection for 6,280 yards of offense, made up of 3,956 through the air and 2,324 yards on the ground. Davidson lead the 2019 Owls, who accumulated more than 2,300 yards on the ground, with 711 yards. He is one of four returning backs that had more than 230 yards. Hayball is also on the 2020 Ray Guy Award watch list after his freshman performance.

Lynn University All-American, Helen Kreuzer, added to her impressive resume over the weekend by winning the 2020 German National Championship. The Bensheim, Germany native shot eight-under par and claimed the title after a three-hole playoff. “We haven’t played as many tournaments as usual this season, so having consistent rounds can be a difficult task,” Kreuzer said after her victory. “The fact that I was able to win the championship means a lot to me. I knew I was up against some tough competition, but was able to keep my composure on the third playoff hole to seal the win. Sinking a birdie putt to the win was icing on the cake.” Kreuzer secured the victory with a
birdie on the third playoff hole. She shot rounds of 67, 67 and 74 at the tournament. “Helen is a fierce competitor and continues to elevate her game,” said Lynn head women’s golf coach Marcelo Huarte. “I know how much this win means, and I couldn’t be happier for her.” The fifth-year senior will return for the Lynn Fighting Knights in 2020-21. Kreuzer is a two-time Women’s Golf Association (WGCA) First Team All-American on the course, and a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American for her combined excellence academically and athletically. In 2019, Kreuzer won the NCAA Division II South Regional individual championship while helping lead Lynn University to the team title.
