Walt Disney and the Real Mary Poppins By: Skip Sheffield Who ever knew the sunny, upbeat musical “Mary Poppins” had such dark, painful origins? Walt Disney knew, and so do his successors. “Saving Mr. Banks” is the entertaining, educational and yes, uplifting tale of Disney’s struggles to convince author P.L. Travers to allow a screen adaptation of her precious work, “Mary Poppins.” A lesser man than Walt Disney would have said “forget it” after 20 years of fruitless negotiations. But Disney was a great man who harbored buried troubles of his own, and he was just as stubborn as the reclusive author.

providing the youth with a network of friends and mentors. “Wings, Wheels & Heels” is the first fundraiser to support this new element of the new Place of Hope at the Haven Campus, which is an extension of Place of Hope, a foster care community in Palm Beach Gardens. The event committee is chaired by Denise Day of Parkland and Jennifer Lentoski of Coral Springs. ”Each of us on the committee has benefited in some form from being a part of a network, whether it is from our family, school, work or volunteer organizations. When a young man or woman ages out of foster care, they typically don’t have this kind of circle to lean on,” Day said. “Wings, Wheels & Heels is a way for us to use our alumni connections to create alumni connections for these young people,” added Lentoski. “At Place of Hope at the Haven Campus, they will continue to learn how to be a productive, confident adults in a cottage setting that is safe, nurturing and family-oriented.” The “Wings, Wheels & Heels” committee is hosting a festive preevent reception at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 at Lamborghini Palm Beach, 2345 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach; www.lamborghinipalmbeach.com.

Are you still keeping your New Year Resolutions?
Happy New Year! As I pen this column, there are so many things that I am happy about. Top of my list, I am happy for the opportunity to have this forum to communicate with you another year. The beginning of the year is a time of reflection. We bemoan the failures of the past year and vow to make resolutions to improve or not to repeat our mistakes. However, we should set resolutions we can keep. Studies show that only 8 percent of New Year’s resolutions are kept. Let’s face it, on New Year’s Eve you resolve to make a change. But within a month, you’re back to your normal patterns. How come? Too many of us make resolutions that lack resolve. Studies also show it takes about 30 days to make or break a habit. So, by directing my energy on smaller and more manageable lifestyle changes, I and most of us will be more likely to dramatically change our lives in a year. I tend to lean toward monthly goals. I promise to be a bit more disciplined starting this month. I will make a list of things I want to work on for the next 30 days. My goals this year range from writing an additional column each week to ensuring that I continue to promote the good work being done daily at Village Academy and Pine Grove Elementary School in Delray Beach. As we think about drafting our resolutions or better yet, plans, for the New Year, it’s important to observe and reflect on model examples of organizations that have and continue to follow the resolutions or commitments they have made. Our local public schools are great examples of public service organizations that establish and keep key commitments to the constituents they serve: our amazing
students and their families. These plans become key organizational values that are deeply embedded in our beliefs, culture and why teaching is a vocation or calling and not just a job. As many of you know, I am not one who makes New Year’s resolutions. However, since I did not achieve all my resolutions, ooops, plans from last year, there are a few I’d like to continue this year: For starters, I wish we all will set resolutions we can keep to improve ourselves, our lives and the world around us. 1. Get Out of Debt. I will strive to spend less than I earn. 2. Learn Something New. I will attempt to learn to fix my own computer, thus making my - right hand - IT friend happy. 3. Get Organized. When it comes to my house, less is more. I will not hesitate to invite someone over on a whim, and I can find my stapler when I need it. 4. Help Others. A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. The next three are my wish list, but I wish friend that you will make them your resolutions. 5. I wish Democrats and Republicans can finally realize that our suffering country is much more important than their petty squabbles, private perks, or corporate backers. 6. I wish Congress would make unemployment a priority. 7. I wish the ongoing conflicts around the world will finally come to peaceful conclusions. 8. And finally, I will strive to ensure you have a good dosage of conversational topic each week. Now having heard that, I welcome your feedback.

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx
The Danger of Fear-Based Decisions Fear, as we all know, can be a strong influence in shaping our behavior. But have you ever considered the effect fear can have on the choices we make in the workplace? A Barna Group study revealed 17 percent of people surveyed say that they make many of their ethical decisions out of fear. They arrive at decisions not out of strong convictions about what is right and proper, but rather out of a desire to avoid undesirable consequences of choosing differently. This was true in my own experience not long after my own business career was getting started. Early on as a CPA, because of a past mistake I had made, I was afraid of losing my job. So when a boss told me to do something illegal for a client, my fear surfaced. Although I
knew what I was being asked to do was wrong, I conceded and did as I was told to avoid being fired. I never forgot that episode and although I never had to face disciplinary measures, it caused me to rethink how I made my choices, both at work and in my personal life. Fear, I decided, should never be a justifying factor for any breach of proper ethical conduct. Of course, fear does not always lead to illegal or unethical behavior. We make investment decisions based on fear, believing our financial wellbeing is at stake. When confronting a formidable competitor in the quest to attract an important customer, we might make promises we know cannot be met. We put in extraordinary hours at work, jeopardizing our health and sacrificing priority time
with our families because we fear not being able to meet the expectations of our supervisors. Fear may tempt us to do things we know are wrong, but we do not have to yield to that temptation. We can set boundaries, determining in advance those areas where we will not compromise our convictions and values. But even more important, we need to keep in mind the one we should allow to have the ultimate say in the things we do or decide not to do. In the Bible’s Old Testament, Deuteronomy 10:12 teaches, “What does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
The Scriptures talk much about the fear of God – not a fear that He in anger will strike us with a bolt of lightning, but a deep sense of reverence and awe, recognizing He has placed us where we are to honor and represent Him, and that He has entrusted the talents and skills we have for His purposes. The demands of our human superiors should never supersede those of the God we worship we serve. Many experiences in the business and professional world have taught me an important truth: The best ethical decisions come from fearing and loving God more than fearing any boss, no matter how much power and influence he or she has in our organization. God’s ways are always the best ways.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
The Love of Books Can Take You Far! I am eternally grateful for all the incentives I received from my parents and other relatives with regard to the benefits of reading. While I was still small, and unable to read or write, I was already impressed by the size of my father’s library, the use he constantly made of books, and the interest that he and other special people in my life manifested toward the significance of reading! That helped put reading in the best possible light for me, at that young age. As soon as I was able to read I started that habit which has consistently remained with me, and has also intensified through the years. Children’s books stretched my imagination and caused reading to become a healthy habit instead of just an occasional obligation. Through the years, reading has
not merely impacted my own life and learning, but it has also aided me in influencing other lives via personal contacts, public talks, my own writings, counseling, and several more avenues of positively impacting people. As those who read regularly know so well, while quietly sitting with a good book anywhere, one can travel long distances and meet significant people from varied eras, ready to make an indelible impression on your life and work! Your vocabulary will grow, your knowledge shall augment, and the cares of this world are momentarily suspended, as you feast on what the turning of pages offers you! Besides relaxation, knowledge gained, vocabulary increased, and countless more benefits, good reading can also provide needed emotional therapy at
difficult moments in one’s life! For someone who is a public speaker, or aspires becoming one, there’s nothing better than consistent good reading as a means of using words effectively, providing topics, securing illustrations and good quotes, and offering direction for effectiveness in the ways your speech is developed and delivered. Never find yourself awake, anywhere, without a book. Besides the times allotted at home for daily reading, remember that at any appointment you make chances are
you shall have to wait a while before your turn comes. Thus, during any necessary pause, reading will dynamically fill a void in your life, while offering much more than you could ever ask or think! Allow your imagination to soar, your mind to stretch, and your creativity to deepen by being always accompanied by a good book which can alter your life for the better, as long as your eye-sight permits! And while you enjoy such benefits, do your best to impart the same to younger generations!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Man reports armed robbery; Cell phone and cash taken Boca Raton, FL – On Thursday, January 2, at about 6:15 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a report of a robbery near 3900 North Federal Highway. The 21 year old victim told officers that he was riding his skateboard westbound on NE Spanish River Boulevard at about 6:00 p.m. and had just crossed over the bridge when a young, thin black male jumped out of the bushes near NE 6th Drive and yelled, “Hey!” The suspect had his t-shirt covering his face and a pistol tucked into his waistband. The suspect pointed the gun at the victim, pushed him toward NE 6th Drive and told him, “If you don’t go back there, I’ll shoot you.” The victim complied and saw two
more, young, thin black males with pistols running towards him from the apartment complex just east of him. The other two suspects also had their shirts covering their faces. The suspects ordered the victim down to the ground and then pulled his backpack off of him and rifled through it. The suspects left the backpack and fled north on foot. The victim discovered his cell phone and about $21.00 in cash were missing. The victim was not injured. If anyone has information about this crime, they are asked to call Detective Jeff Stepp at (561) 6206196 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.
Church donations thief arrested Boca Raton, FL – On December 21, employees with St. Joan of Arc Church reported to Boca Raton Police officers that a male had stolen several hundred dollars from their charitable donation locker earlier in the day. The crime was caught on the church’s surveillance system and the video was released to the media and posted on social media sites. On Thursday, December 26, detectives received a tip from a man who had seen the video. The tipster identified the suspect as Michael Quick. The tipster works at the Valero Gas Station and told detectives he recognizes Quick
from the gas station. Detectives went to Quick’s last known address and met with the current residents. Both knew Quick, since he performs maintenance around the property. They also identified Quick from the video. Detectives and officers searched the areas where Quick is known to spend time and located him at 299 West Camino Real. Officers arrested Quick and charged him with grand theft. Quick told detectives he needed the money for food.
Woman’s cellphone snatched from her hand Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, December 31, at about 7:10 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a report of a strong arm robbery that occurred outside the McDonald’s, 710 West Yamato Road. The victim told officers she entered the restaurant and sat at a table just inside the entrance, while talking on her iPhone. She added that two males entered the restaurant behind her. One suspect went to the counter and the other male stood near her table and looked at her. After about 25 minutes, the victim went to an outside table and continued talking on her phone. The male who had been looking at her
inside the restaurant, followed her outside. The suspect approached her, grabbed her phone and after a brief struggle, pulled the phone away from her. The suspect then ran southeast through the parking lot. The victim was not injured. Officers, including K9, responded to the scene and while checking for the suspect, saw him getting on the Tri-Rail train. Surveillance video shows the suspect with two other males. Two burglars arrested by Tactical Team
On Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at about 10:30 a.m., Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team officers observed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Runner’s Edge, 3195 North Federal Highway. During the surveillance, an officer observed the suspicious grey Dodge Charger, driven by Derrick Phillips, stop directly behind a maroon Kia Optima. A male, later identified as Theophers Cooper, got out of the Charger, crouched next to the driver’s side of the Optima, and looked into the window for several seconds. Cooper then stood up, looked directly at the officer and returned to the Charger. Phillips backed the car into another spot. The officer, realizing his cover was blown, approached Cooper and www.bocaratontribune.com
Phillips. Both Cooper and Phillips admitted they were in Boca Raton to commit burglaries. When officers searched the vehicle, they found a Florida driver’s license, debit card, and a business license belonging to the victim of an auto burglary that occurred earlier at the Dunkin Donuts, 777 South Federal Highway. Officers also found a window punch concealed in the driver’s seat and a small amount of marijuana on the floorboards of the Charger. Officers arrested Cooper and Phillips and charged them with burglary to an auto, attempted burglary to an auto, possession of marijuana, and possession of stolen property. Phillips was also charged with possession of a burglary tool and driving without a license.

Walt Disney and the Real Mary Poppins
By: Skip Sheffield Who ever knew the sunny, upbeat musical “Mary Poppins” had such dark, painful origins? Walt Disney knew, and so do his successors. “Saving Mr. Banks” is the entertaining, educational and yes, uplifting tale of Disney’s struggles to convince author P.L. Travers to allow a screen adaptation of her precious work, “Mary Poppins.” A lesser man than Walt Disney would have said “forget it” after 20 years of fruitless negotiations. But Disney was a great man who harbored buried troubles of his own, and he was just as stubborn as the reclusive author. It’s been a banner year for Tom Hanks, who shone as the valiant “Captain Phillips” and Boca Life & Arts
now convincingly fills the shoes of the legendary animator and entrepreneur Walt Disney. Tom Hanks looks nothing like the seemingly genial founder of Disneyland. Hanks did grow a mustache and cut and slicked his hair in 1950s fashion, but his focus is more on the indomitable inner spirit of Disney, who promised his daughters he would develop a movie version of their favorite book, “Mary Poppins,” by P.L. Travers if it was the last thing he would ever do. Prickly Travers, who was born Helen Lyndon Goff in Queensland, Australia, is played by brilliant British actress Emma Thompson. The film, directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”), is set in 1961 with regular flashbacks
to Travers’ Australian Outback childhood. It was not an easy childhood. Her father, Travers Robert Goff (Colin Farrell), was an alcoholic dreamer and failed banker. Nevertheless little Helen loved her father unconditionally. She honored him with her pen name, and he would turn up in unexpected ways in “Mary Poppins,” which was her only commercial success. “Mary Poppins” is in essence a tribute to P.L. Travers’ luckless, ill-fated father. This film, adapted for the screen by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith, explains why Travers was so protective of her fictitious governess. Emma Thompson, who will likely be nominated for an Oscar, brings out the character’s stubborn pride and contrary nature without
www.bocaratontribune.com
making us hate her. “Saving Mr. Banks” is leavened with much humor by an ace supporting cast that includes Paul Giamatti as Ralph, Travers’ Los Angeles chauffeur; Bradley Whitford as Don Da Gradi, co-writer of the 1964 film; B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman as composers and lyricists of the score; Kathy Baker as a trusted Disney studio executive and Melanie Paxon as Disney’s loyal secretary, Dolly. This film may sanitize and whitewash grittier parts of the real story but in the tradition of Disney family entertainment it is a light, loving tribute to Uncle Walt and his most challenging film project. Tony’s Tips For Success
Entertainment Skip Sheffield A Very Dark “August: Osage County”
“Misery loves family” That’s the tag line of “August: Osage County,” based on the 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts, with screenplay by the playwright. “August” is an actor’s showcase, and in this case director John Wells (“The Company Men”) has pit Meryl Streep against her entire family, but in particular eldest daughter Barbara, played by Julia Roberts. You could call this stunt casting, because both Streep and Roberts are lovely women who are “uglied up” for their roles. This is particularly true for matriarch Violet Weston, played by Meryl Streep. Not only is Violet a shaky, pill-popping, chainsmoking, extremely nasty person; she is dying of cancer. Streep had her head patchily shaved and dyed black with contrasting gray to simulate a chemotherapy patient. Most of the time she wears a ratty dark wig and scowls. The family’s alcoholic, depressed patriarch, Beverly Weston (Sam Shepard) was once a famous poet. Now he has disappeared and mom’s days are numbered. That’s why the family January 10, through January 16, 2014
is summoned to hash things out somewhere in small-town Oklahoma. A monumental soap opera of arguing, abuse, betrayal, cruelty, pettiness and even incest ensues. In fairness it is a first-rate cast playing horrible people. In time it is revealed that Barbara is separated from husband Bill Fordham (Ewan McGregor), a college professor who is having an affair with a young student. Violet’s sister Mattie (Margo Martindale) has a dark secret she has kept from husband Charlie (Chris Cooper) and “Little Charles” Aiken (Benedict Cumberbatch), who fancies Barbara’s younger sister Ivy (Julianne Nicholson). Middle sister Karen (Juliette Lewis) has a 14-year-old daughter Jean (Abigail Breslin) who fancies pot and attracts the unwanted attention of Karen’s fiancé Steve (Dermot Mulroney). If this all sounds intriguing, by all means see “August: Osage County.” Be advised there is no happy ending, only a quote from one of T.S. Eliot’s darkest poems. For me, one visit was enough.
What if all the Skittles were RED?
Can you imagine a world with nothing but red Skittles? The variety of flavors and colors are what makes Skittles so good! Now imagine if we were all the same. Same hair, same eye color, same likes, same dislikes, how boring would that be. Imagine if you were competing for an event, but everyone was the same. There would be no winner...Just a tie! Being different is actually what brings us closer together. “Variety is the Spice of Life!” Take a minute to read this Poem by Robert Frost. “THE ROAD NOT TAKEN” by Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. In Frost’s poem he talks discusses how he chose to be Different! He chose to go down the road that had not been traveled by the Majority of people. It’s important to know that we are all individuals and as individuals we each have different Goals, Aspirations and Dreams. In order to be successful we have to break from the pack and follow our own course and journey down the road less traveled. This being understood, it is important to understand while we make our own choices in life and our own decisions about our future, so do those around us. Just like we must break out and travel down our own road, We must accept that our friends and neighbors will also choose their own path. We should not look down on them because they choose a different road, but praise them on their journey to success. That is what brings us close that is the “Spice of Life”. Knowing that we are all different and yet all here to support one another. Do you want to be in a bag full of red Skittles, or in a Bag full of Different color Skittles?

The Tony Award-Winning Broadway Hit, Pippin, Comes to Boca Raton The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Pippin will open on January 24th and run through February 9th at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park. “Although it’s set in medieval times, Pippin is actually a joyous musical satire of the changing American culture in the early 1970s,” explains the show’s director, Keith Garsson. “It’s another of Bob Fosse’s classic (yet intimate) shows that proves once again his style has never dated." According to musical theatre scholar Scott Miller in his 1996 book, From Assassins to West Side Story, "Pippin is a largely underappreciated musical with a great deal more substance to it than many people realize..." “The musical comedy highlights a young man (Mike Westrich recently of Tick, Tick... Boom!) who tries to ‘find himself ’”, Garsson continues, “And reflects the baby boomers’ coming of age as they took longer to decide careers, life partners, and children. Guiding Pippin through his various peregrinations is the Leading Player (Cabonell Awardwinner Reggie White - fresh from the national tour of Porgy and Bess) who opens the show with the classic number Magic To Do. Pippin features one of the most entertaining and vivacious scores in Broadway history by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked),” Garsson says. “And we’re thrilled to have Carbonell Award-winner Patti Gardner back after her terrific performance in our 2013 season’s production of Chicago, along with Leah Sessa as Katherine, Troy Stanley as King Charlemagne, Conor Walton and Randy Charleville.” "Pippin was my very first professional show, and it almost did not happen,” says Reggie Whitehead. I attended the South Eastern Theater Conferences many years ago, and almost missed seeing the director of that particular production. He spotted me (from my
Boca Life & Arts
8x10!) in a hallway and said that he had been waiting to see me. He had me come to his hotel suite, where I sang for him, a capella, and read for him. Well, I got the job. "I love playing the role of the Leading Player,” Whitehead continues, “Because I always find something new in the character and the show. This is my third time doing this role, and now that I am a little older, with a different outlook on life in general, I suppose some of that life experience will help me shape this incarnation, at this stage of my life." Patti Gardner and Mike Westrich are equally excited to be a part of the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s first 2014 production: “I’m playing two roles: Fastrada and Berthe,” says Gardner. “Berthe is the role I've ALWAYS wanted to play ever since I saw the original production of Pippin in New York. Both women are diametrically opposed in every way...so it'll be great fun to do that.” “I'm thrilled to be playing such an amazing role, as I love the score to Pippin,” Westrich says. “I love the interpretive nature of the piece and I can't wait to bring a new Pippin to the stage” Tickets for Pippin are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 561347-3948. Performances are on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 pm, and Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are on sale now, and may be purchased at the Willow Theatre Box Office at 561-347-3948. The Willow Theatre is located at 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton, 33486 (in the heart of Sugar Sand Park, just south of Palmetto Park Road). Failing When Changing an Eating Pattern is Never a Failure It is said that Thomas Edison did not fail a thousand times, he simply found a thousand ways that did not work. That is the journey that everyone embarks on when they try to lose weight. Deliberately trying to lose weight is unnatural. Yep!! It is like try to grow taller when you are 25. No species wants to lose weight. The body is always trying to gain weight to be prepared for when there is a shortage of food (winter, draughts, floods etc.). It wants sugar and fat. In the wild it is very rare to get. In the store it is easy. So now you see why it is so darn hard to lose weight. So give it a try, again and probably again. You will at times drift away from what you are doing. If you quickly come back to what you were doing then the time away is simply a means
of learning. If you stay away but start something else, than you are still learning what does not work for you. Just keep at it and in time you will find what works. Doing weights can work wonderfully with a weight lose plan. It can help burn up some calories. Not too many at first or your body will definitely fight back if you cut your calories and burn what you have stored at the say time. This is sold as the fastest way to lose weight and in my experience is really the fastest way to get someone to quit both! When you incorporate exercise with weight loss you will see your shape start to change from the weights and that will help inspire you to stay on track with the diet change. The weight loss will show your body change and that will help keep you lifting.

Homes Inside and Joshua Carlson Out Everybody Hates the “B” Word Fireworks! Resolutions! Goals! The New Year is right around the corner, so let’s talk about our Goals. Many different aspirations are set upon us; to lose some weight, get married or maybe invest in some pretty large purchases, such as a car or Home. Did you know that more people take more time in the preparation and budgeting for their weddings than they do when preparing to purchase their first home? Don’t get me wrong…getting married can be one of the most enhancing times for a couple. Now imagine the cost of the wedding in comparison to purchasing a home. I think you will agree, that purchasing a home is right up there in costs. It will be one of the biggest and most expensive purchases you will spend your money on in your lifetime. The #1 challenge that I come across most in my profession is that people over extend, or cannot afford the home they purchase. Back in 2006 to 2009 there were 2 main reasons for the real estate decline, and homeowners losing their properties.
The first reason was due to Banks lending monies to nonqualified Buyers. Banks placed Buyers in loans that dramatically increased in payment amount after the first five years, therefore extending homeowners, and resulting in loss of their homes after the foreclosure process. Second reason, and probably the most impacting, is that Homeowners failed to plan and stick to their budget. If your goal is to purchase a home in 2014 you have to make sure you can afford the home, right? If the answer is YES to purchasing a home, here is the secret to success…Prepare a Budget!! So how do you do that? By preparing a BUDGET. There, I said it…the “B” word…BUDGET! There are multiple ways you can purchase a home and keep to a budget. Stay tuned over the upcoming weeks, as I show you ways to effectively prepare a budget and plan for a successful home purchase. Always keep in mind… If you cannot afford it, DON’T buy it!

What Will Your 2014 Look Like? What will 2014 look like for you? Asking the question another way, how would you desire for it to look? The first question is difficult, even impossible to answer since it involves so many variables: World, national and local economic factors; changes within the specific industry where you work; decisions made – or not made – that have unanticipated outcomes. On the personal level it is much the same: Unexpected influences and events; circumstances beyond your control; hopes unfulfilled. The second question, however, is much easier to answer. We can identify plans, hopes and dreams for the coming year, some based on the past, others defined by what we would want to happen. But the reality is, important things usually do not happen on their own. We must take initiative to bring them about. One of the best ways for doing this is by setting goals. My friend, Gary Highfield, in his book, When ‘Want To’ Becomes ‘Have To!’, tells his story of overcoming great hardship to build a successful career as a businessman and entrepreneur. One of the keys to his success, Gary explains, was setting goals – and continually reminding himself about them. He offers some sound suggestions: Focus on where you want to be, not on where you are. Do not wait for things to change. Be the change agent. Goals do not care who possesses them. Goals like everyone – even you. Do not just think about goals. Write them down. Then, carry them
everywhere you go. It does not matter how long it takes to get to where you want to go. But the sooner you get started, the sooner you will get there. Get ready – and stay ready. Then you will not have to start getting ready when your opportunity of a lifetime comes along. In the Bible’s timeless book of Proverbs we also see the wisdom of planning and setting goals: Who is the ultimate focus of your goals? Most goals are established for ourselves, people we know, or our businesses. The Bible says even if those are good, we should set our sights even higher – for serving and pleasing God. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3). Be flexible, willing to change course if needed. One of the best things about goals is in pursuing them we get into motion. But we need willingness to change plans and shift direction if circumstances dictate. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9) Understand we can be God’s instruments for doing His work. We can be diligent in formulating and articulating our goals and plans, but have you ever considered God has specific intentions for the work He has called His people to do – even in the so-called “secular workplace”? “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21). “A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way?”(Proverbs 20:24)

This is the industry’s preeminent competition honoring design achievement. The Housewares Design Award All-Stars – the over 130 vendors who have won Housewares Design Awards since its inception – represent the innovation leaders that have fueled the growth of the housewares industry with creativity, quality and responsiveness to consumers’ needs. Twelve “Best in Category” winners that stand out for both aesthetics and functionality will be chosen from the 60 finalists. Three “Best of the Best” recipients
at the Gold, Silver and Bronze levels will be chosen from the twelve category winners, honored as the best designed housewares products of the year. In addition, a “Green House” design award will be given to the best-designed eco-friendly products. All awards will be announced on February 4, 2014 at a gala ceremony and luncheon at the New York Marriott Marquis overlooking Times Square. Two Boca Raton-area companies that have been named as a finalist for the 2014 Housewares Design Awards are Jarden Consumer, and Twin-Star International. They are competing for “Best in Category” and “Best of the Best” honors as the best housewares products of the year.
The Jewish Recovery Center has announced plans for a third annual Retreat and Shabbaton weekend on February 7-9, 2014. To be held again at the Boca Raton Marriott, located at 5150 Town Center Circle in Boca Raton, the weekend-long celebration is expected to generate continued interest and excitement, as attendance has grown each year. Sponsored by Caron Renaissance, the retreat offers Jews in recovery an opportunity to connect with other Jews in fellowship and camaraderie. “It has been a sincere pleasure to continue our relationship with the Jewish Recovery Center as a sponsor of this event,” said Sid Goodman, executive director for Caron Renaissance, sponsor for the third consecutive year. “The Jewish community faces unique challenges in recovery, and we value spiritual healing as part of the overall recovery process. Retreats such as this one are such a critical component to continued sobriety by offering the Jewish community an opportunity to connect in an uplifting environment.” An incredible lineup of worldrenowned speakers and lecturers highlights a weekend filled with workshops, meditation groups,
recovery meetings, family support groups, and Jewish Spirituality classes. Inspirational keynote speakers include Rabbi Abraham Twerski, MD, Rabbi Shais Taub, Rabbi Dov Greenberg, Rabbi Meir Kessler, Lewis J. Abrams, Arnie Wexler and Sheila Wexler. “The Jewish Recovery Center was founded to address addiction treatment in the context of Judaism,” said Rabbi Meir Kessler, founder and executive director of the Jewish Recovery Center. “Jews in particular often struggle with the stigma long associated with substance abuse. Addiction is a disease and recovery is something that should be celebrated. We are thrilled to be able to offer a platform for continued encouragement and mutual support. Currently, we are finalizing plans for the third annual event, which has seen an increase in interest and attendance since its inception.” Costs for the retreat weekend are $299 per person, which includes activities and all meals. Special hotel accommodations are available at the Boca Raton Marriott for Friday, February 7th and Saturday, February 8th. For more information, or to register for the retreat, please visit www.JewishRecoveryCenter.com.

Three More Added to Partrige’s Coaching Staff
Charlie Partridge, Florida Atlantic University’s new head football coach, announced the addition Javon Dewitt, Bart Miller and Dan Shula to the 2014 staff. Jovan Dewitt, who joined the program in 2012 as the linebackers coach and who was elevated to defensive coordinator for the final four games of 2013, will continue in his role as the linebacker coach and will also serve as the codefensive coordinator. As the defensive coordinator during the last four games of 2013, Dewitt was instrumental in the Owls defense that allowed an average of only 10 points and 234 yards per game, including an average of just 82 rushing yards. He also will enjoy the return of D’Joun Smith, who ended his junior campaign ranked No. 3 in the nation for interceptions and No. 2 in passes defended. All-conference players Andrae Kirk, at linebacker, and Brandin Bryant, defensive lineman, also return. “The Owls defense will be in good hands with Coach Dewitt as defensive coordinator,” said Partridge. “His success at several levels of college football, his defensive philosophies and his ability to teach the defensive system are paramount to our progress.” On the offensive side of the ball, Bart Miller has been named offensive line coach and Dan Shula as the wide receivers coach. Miller crossed paths with Partridge at the University of Wisconsin where he served as a graduate assistant and quality control coach before being elevated to offensive line coach. He took over a line that was ranked No. 103 nationally and finished ranked No. 12. He returned to New Mexico State University for the 2013 season
and worked to reduce the number of sacks allowed by the offensive line by more than half the high of 45 allowed in 2012 and also averaged of 23 knockdowns per game. The Nebraska native gained his first coaching experience working at his alma mater New Mexico State where he served as a graduate assistant. Miller will return three-starting lineman to an FAU unit that began 2013 with one veteran and ended the season by providing protection for a running game that accumulated 2,225 yards--nearly 400 more yards than any single-season in FAU history. “Bart Miller, our new OL Coach, is an outstanding teacher that has learned from the best in the business,” said Partridge. “When Bart took over the offensive line at The University of Wisconsin his immediate impact on that group was apparent.” Shula will return home where his last name and the sport of football are nearly synonymous. The Cooper City, FL native played his prep career at the perennial national power St. Thomas Aquinas High School where he was a three-year letter winner and a member of the 1999 Florida Class 4A State Champions. Shula then went on to be a three-year letter winner, at quarterback, for Ivy League member Dartmouth. Following his collegiate career, he served as a graduate assistant coach at The University of Alabama (2006) where he primarily worked with the wide receivers and quarterbacks. Most recently, Shula served as assistant coach/wide receivers coach and the director of football operations at Illinois State University (ISU). During his four seasons at ISU, Shula served two years as an offensive assistant coach and the final two years mentoring the wide receivers, kickers and punters. “Dan Shula has proven to be an outstanding recruiter in Florida and brings experience at the wide receiver position from successful programs,” said Partridge. “I am excited to have Dan lead our wide receivers group into the future and represent the FAU Owls on the recruiting trail.” Partridge’s staff will be completed over the next few days which will allow the full attention to be turned towards the 2014 recruiting class.

method accepted through the Visa presale and is the preferred card of U.S. Soccer. Terms and conditions apply. The U.S. team will travel from its Jan. 31 match against Canada in Frisco, Texas, to South Florida in preparation to face Russia. This will be the second appearance for the U.S. Women at FAU Stadium. The WNT ended a fantastic 2012 there with a 4-1 victory against China PR. This will be the USA’s fourth game in the past 14 months in the state of Florida. The USA has not faced Russia in more than a decade, with the last meeting coming on Sept. 29, 2002, a 5-1 U.S. victory in Uniondale, N.Y. Russia put in a respectable performance in group play at last summer’s UEFA Women’s Championship, falling to France 3-1 before tying England and Spain, both by 1-1 scores. “It’s always a positive to play countries that we maybe haven’t seen that often,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Tom Sermanni. “The Russians have some talented players and with eight European countries qualifying for the next Women’s World Cup, every country in that tournament is going to have to navigate some very difficult European opponents.”

FAU Women’s Basketball Continues Hot Streak, Downs BethuneCookman
Four players reached double figures as the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team reached double-digit wins on Thursday, topping BethuneCookman 81-65 in the Burrow. The Owls (10-3) continue the best start in the program’s Division-I history as they prepare to enter Conference USA play next week. With the victory over the Wildcats (3-11), the Owls have won a schoolrecord 10 non-conference games. Seniors Chenise Miller, Latavia Dempsey, Kimberly Smith and Shanequa Schrouder each scored double figures for the Owls, who have won 10 of their last 11 games. Miller led FAU with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks in the contest. Her 89 career blocks places her in fourth all-time at FAU. Dempsey scored 13 points, reaching double figures for the fourth-straight game.
Smith flirted with a triple-double, posting 11 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists while Schrouder earned her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats led by as many as six in the first half and took a two-point lead into the break after FAU’s Takia Brooks hit a three in the closing seconds to cut into the margin. FAU would open up the second half with a barrage of shots including a pair of three-pointers by Dempsey and Smith to take a two-point lead that they would not relinquish. The Owls went on a 10-2 run midway through the second half to pull ahead to a 59-49 lead. FAU forced 14 turnovers in the second half and capitalized on those for 17 points. The Owls also out-rebounded BCU 30-17 in the second half for 16 second-chance points.
FAU Men’s Tennis Names Ivan Machado As Assistant Coach Florida Atlantic University men’s tennis has hired Ivan Machado as an assistant coach. Machado comes to Florida Atlantic from the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the men’s tennis team. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Machado was one of the Brazil’s top junior tennis players. Machado played four years for the University of South Carolina where he finished his career as one of South Carolina’s most active players. He currently holds the South Carolina’s record for career SEC doubles matches played with 42 and is second in SEC career combined matches played with 82. Machado also is 6th in the program’s history with more than 250 combined matches played. He was ranked as high as No. 9 in NCAA doubles and competed in the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championship. He helped lead the Gamecocks to two NCAA Tournament appearances, 2009 and 2012, respectively. This is Head Coach Ricardo
Gonzalez’s first hire and he believes Machado will bring a lot to the program. “I am extremely excited to welcome Ivan Machado as part of our coaching staff,” said Gonzalez. “Ivan is a perfect fit to this team. His knowledge of the game will benefit us and allow us to make big strides towards our goals. Florida Atlantic is fortunate to have him join our family and I am looking forward to our first journey together.” The Owls have returned following the break and will be welcomed by Machado. “I’m honored and grateful for this opportunity. It feels great! FAU is the perfect place to start my college coaching career,” Machado said. ““FAU has a young team with a lot of potential. When Ricardo Gonzalez talked to me about FAU, I knew I wanted to be in Boca Raton. More importantly, I wanted the opportunity to work with Ricardo. We are both extremely competitive and I think we can really do something special together.”

Lynn Men’s Basketball Falls at Home to Palm Beach Atlantic Lynn University’s men’s basketball team lost to Palm Beach Atlantic (5-9), 56-53, on Saturday afternoon in the de Hoernle Center. Aaron Harrison led the Fighting Knights (6-5) with 14 points and 14 rebounds while being the only player with a double-double. The Blue & White scored first on a bucket from Aaron Harrison deep in the paint but the Sailfish quickly answered back. Lynn however would hold a slight advantage throughout the first half despite the lead changing four times. Lynn took its largest lead of twelve with 3:59 remaining in the half before heading into the locker rooms ahead 30-28. PBA’s Christian Martinez led all scorers in the first half with nine points. Fred Landers and Aaron Harrison each had seven points for the Blue & White while Kaleb Clyburn added five points and three assists. The Fighting Knights shot 40 percent from the field while holding the visitors to 39.4 percent. Lynn out rebounded the Sailfish 21-15 in the first frame and was led by Harrison and Cory Thomas who each had five boards.
Palm Beach Atlantic evened the score in the opening minute of the second half. The Sailfish led by seven with 5:53 remaining but Lynn would not go down easy. A trey by Josh Soto with 4:15 remaining gave the Blue & White the spark it needed when it cut the deficit to three with PBA up 5047. PBA quickly responded but two successful free throws by Landers made it a two possession game. Lynn found themselves down three points with just seconds remaining when Clyburn was fouled behind the arc. Missing two of the three free throws the Sailfish were able get possession back. A successful free throw later by the visitors Lynn had one last opportunity but the buzzer beat Haki Stampley’s shot from downtown. Palm Beach Atlantic went on to win 56-53 to split the season series 1-1. Lynn shot 35.7 percent from the field in the loss while three players scored in double digits. Palm Beach Atlantic’s bench scored 26 points off the bench on 43.5 percent from the field. Martinez led the Sailfish with 12 points. Clyburn dished out a game-high six assists while Stampley and Landers each had ten points.
Lynn Women’s Basketball Fall to Sailfish 64-61 Lynn University’s women’s basketball team was taken down by Palm Beach Atlantic University 6164 in a head-to-head match-up on Saturday afternoon. Zachara Bailey led all scorers in the contest with 23 points while Sharneka McCatty noted her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Fighting Knights (8-3, 1-0 SSC) looked to get even in their second meeting against the Sailfish (7-10) after a tough loss earlier this season. Both teams came out looking sharp, quick movement up and down the court paired with precise passing kept the game level for the first period. Lynn held the advantage in shooting from the field, shooting 34.4 percent while the Sailfish shot 31.3 percent. Tifani Kerrison led LU in the attack with nine points while Bailey added eight points matching the Sailfish’s highest scorer Jaz Green. Palm Beach Atlantic put Lynn under pressure right from second-

half whistle. A couple of missed shots by the Fighting Knights allowed for the Sailfish to pull away by taking a 14-point advantage, 51-37, with 10 minutes remaining. The Blue and White wouldn’t allow PBA to put the game away just yet, making a late run in the final minutes of the game. With just 1:41 left, Bailey sunk a three-pointer followed by a layup from McCatty to bring life back to the Fighting Knights, 6260. Forced to make a play on the ensuing possession, the Sailfish fouled Bailey to send her to the line to shoot two and potentially tie the game. Unfortunately, the Blue & White guard converted on only one of the baskets, and Lynn was unable to come back before the time ran out. Lynn shot 34.9 percent from the field while the Sailfish shot 36.4 percent. The Blue and White outshot PBA from three point range 28.6 percent to 23.1 percent.

Walter Restrepo Traded To San Antonio For Hotel and Transportation Arrangements By: Pedro Heizer The San Antonio Scorpions and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers have agreed on a deal that will send the rights of Walter Restrepo to San Antonio, and in return, it looks as if the Strikers have received a transfer fee. However, upon further investigation it is believed that the transfer fee the Strikers received was in fact hotel and transportation arrangements for their stay in San Antonio when the clubs face off on June 7th. After the Atlanta Silverbacks announcement earlier this morning that they would not have a head coach this upcoming season, trading a player for goods and services doesn't sound that bad. The San Antonio Scorpions president Howard Cornfield has this to say about the deal, "The Scorpions would like to thank Bill Brendel of the Crockett Hotel and Mark Thronson of Shark Limo, two long-term, great partners, for their incredible assistance. It was only through their assistance that we were able to get this deal done." Restrepo, who is widely regarded
as one of the best attacking players in the NASL, finished the 2013 NASL season scoring two goals in 1,188 minutes of play. It was his first time back in action after recovering from knee surgery at the end of a brilliant 2012 campaign. During that brilliant season, Restrepo led the league with eight assists and added six goals to his name, which helped him be named into the 2012 NASL Best XI. Restrepo played in 1,793 minutes in his first season with the Strikers and established himself as one of the best and most dynamic attacking players in the North American Soccer League. After his stellar 2012 campaign Restrepo fell out of grace within the Strikers coaching staff. Former
head coach Daryl Shore often hinted that Restrepo needed "attitude adjustments", and once the Kronstainer regime took over Restrepo would find the same difficulty cracking the Starting XI. Nevertheless, despite issues with the coaching staff, Restrepo was a fan favorite in Fort Lauderdale and was named the 2013 Ultras Player of the Year, an yearly award by The Ultras which is voted on by the fans. Restrepo was born in San Diego and has played professionally with several teams in Colombia before he returned to the United States. Restrepo has played with teams such as Deportes Tolima, Boyacá Chicó, and Express Rojo, appearing in both the Categoría Primera A and the Categoría Primera B between 2006 and 2010. In 2011 he signed with the Strikers where he has spent the last three seasons. "Walter is a technically gifted player that we hold in high regard who brings attacking flair and quality on the ball," said Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina. "He has demonstrated the ability to be a dominating player in the NASL

and he is focused on winning and earning an opportunity to play at higher levels. He is a player with a wide array of attacking weapons and is a game-changer and a terrific acquisition for our club." The 25 year-old has international experience as well, representing the Colombian national team at the U-17 level. The creative midfield player joins fellow NASL standouts Danny Barrera and Shaun Saiko as recently added midfielders to the Scorpions roster, and the three players will provide an exciting brand of soccer in San Antonio. "Walter will bring energy and excitement to our lineup and further solidifies a revamped roster that features four NASL Best XI players", said Cornfield. Restrepo's signing brings to seven the number of players committed to the Scorpions for the 2014 season. Restrepo joins fellow newcomers Jonathan Fana, Danny Barrera, Shaun Seiko and returnees Tomasz Zahorski, Stephen Deroux and Greg Janicki.
