Community ‘Miracle Chef’ Presents Exquisite Meals Made With Recovered Food

Bozena [Szalobryt, director of food center at BHH] came to me and said well let’s call it ‘Miracle Chef ’ because we work miracles everyday in that kitchen, and we do,” affirmed Gavrilos. “Thanks to the amazing volunteers at Helping Hands, thanks to our incredible contributors, our food donors, our corporate community sponsors, we work miracles here everyday, somehow, someway, 200 hot meals come out of this kitchen and an amazing amount of bags.” The teams of volunteers that participated were Love In Action, Love Out Loud, The Souperstars, Bon Appétit, Lunch Bunch, and Team Cuisine, all made up by incredible cooks that dedicate their time and effort to make hot meals for those in need. “These are the teams who, with incredible selflessness, come day after day, week after week, month after month, and prepare the food,” said Gavrilos introducing the teams. “They don’t do it for thanks, they don’t do it for applause, they do it because from the words of Mother Teresa, ‘God does not expect us to do great things but we can do small things we great amounts of love’.”
This year four food experts were invited to the event as the celebrity judges. Starting with judge Max Tucci, host of Max and Friends on L.A. Talk Radio and host of Eye On The People with Max Tucci on WSFL CW. Another judge was Letty Alvarez, founder and pastry chef at LA Sweetz, which was featured on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”. Judge Denise Righetti, who is Chief Foodie Officer of Savor Our City Culinary Tours and food blogger at BocaFoodFinds.com. Last but not least, Chef Aaron Fuller, Food and Beverage Director at Mar-a-Lago Club. The judges tried all the different plates and selected a winner for each award according to the category of the award that was most fitting for each dish. Team Love In Action won the first award, ‘The Most Health Friendly Dish’. The second award for ‘The Best Recipe’ went to Bon Appétit. The winning team for the ‘A Taste of Home’ award was The Souperstars. Team Lunch Bunch won the award for ‘Most Flavorful Dish’. Team Cuisine won an award for ‘Best Presentation’. Pine Crest Students Welcomed Back To School With New Innovation Labs Pine Crest School students were greeted with more than a warm welcome from teachers and classrooms stocked with new textbooks and school supplies when the bells rang for the first day of the 2015-16 school year. Over the summer, architects and construction crews built three new innovation labs and faculty developed a robust pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade computer science curriculum. Made possible by a generous gift from Pine Crest School Board of Trustees member Jordan Zimmerman and The Jordan Zimmerman Family Foundation, the initiatives fall under the umbrella of the newly formed Zimmerman Family Innovation and Technology Program at Pine Crest School. Zimmerman is founder and chairman of Zimmerman Advertising, an Omnicom Group company and the leading national retail brand builder with more than 1,100 associates and offices throughout the country. “This is one of the largest gifts to advance a curricular initiative in the history of Pine Crest School,” said Pine Crest President Dr. Dana Markham. “We are so fortune to have Jordan Zimmerman as a Trustee and partner. His support comes at a time when it is critical to prepare our students to thrive in the global market place of the future – one that requires ingenuity and real-world problem solving skills.”
Staffed by a team of computer science and innovation specialists, called the iTeam, Pine Crest’s innovation labs and computer science curriculum have been designed to complement the Schools’ traditional and rigorous core curriculum. The labs, one on the Boca Raton campus and two on the Fort Lauderdale campus, are dedicated maker spaces filled with state-of-the-art equipment for all grade levels in a modern, collaborative environment. Computer Science spaces, whether in the classroom or innovation lab, are places where students learn programming and algorithmic thinking. Students are already taking full advantage of the spaces, curriculum, and faculty expertise. Competitive robotics teams have been formed at the Lower, Middle, and Upper School levels, including an all-girl team representing the Upper School. “Innovation has made this country what it is today. Zimmerman Advertising is an innovative agency that has differentiated itself from the sea of sameness in the advertising sector. Today I am proud to endow The Zimmerman Family Innovation and Technology Institute at Pine Crest School, its programs and iLabs. Providing differentiated learning opportunities will enable every child to grow and expand their mind with creativity and originality,” said Jordan Zimmerman.
Love Out Loud. Some of the dishes offered at the event were baked clams, and Caponata, an eggplant appetizer, both made by the team Love In Action. Another dish was the New England fish cakes with cilantro creme, and the beef supreme, both made by Team Cuisine. Team Bon Appétit offered a great taste of Italy with their sausage and peppers both mild and hot. All the dishes were made with recovery food from local restaurants and stores. “We are blessed with incredible food recovery partners, Publix, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Winn Dixie and Costco, Target and Walmart, help us with our pantry program,” said Gavrilos. “On our restaurant side, Capital Grill, an amazing partner with us, Seasons 52, Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, Little Caesar,” detailed Gavrilos. “All of these local restaurant establishments do food recovery to help us feed those 53,000 hot meals and 66,000 bags of groceries.” BHH serves 9 elementary schools in Boca Raton with their program Boca Helping Hands Backpacks. As of today, they send home 1,400 backpacks every Friday with
food for the weekend to the children. “Every year in America we produce 535 billion pounds of food and we throw out half of it. Of the half we throw out, half of that is recoverable and usable,” stated Gavrilos. “The year we moved into this building we recovered 323,000 pounds of food, last year folks we recovered 1.8million pounds of food,” proceeded Gavrilos. “Every month 150,000 pounds of food moves through this warehouse.” After the award ceremony, Gavrilos asked for the attention of the audience to congratulate the volunteers for their effort, and asked to applaud Mike Munger, member of the Love Out Loud team who, not only comes into the kitchen every Friday to cook the food, but he goes out to Costco every Thursday and buys it himself. “It’s that love, it’s that spirit, it’s that commitment that makes Boca Helping Hands the place it is,” concluded Gavrilos, before inviting everyone once again to enjoy the succulent meals from the menu. The event was a success. Everybody left with a full tummy, a big smile and a happy heart.

Parker’s First 90 Days at the Helm at Palm Beach State It has been 90 days since Dr. Ava L. Parker took over as president of Palm Beach State College and she has been using every opportunity she gets to push the message that she will continue the spirit of excellence at the college. A few organizations have held welcome receptions for her and she has been invited to speak at functions in the community. Top on her list of things are ensuring the institution provides quality graduates for the workforce. This she plans to achieve by providing a sound education. Palm Beach State College is a leader in the community and will continue to be responsive by provide quality student who will be prepared for the workforce or go on to state institutions including Florida Atlantic University, she said. She hopes to bring that spirit of innovation to Palm Beach State College from Florida Polytechnic University, which is the state’s only stem university. As the executive vice president and chief operating officer at
Florida Polytechnic, Parker pushed to build something innovative. She also wants to forge new and shore up existing partnerships with the business community. She wants local business leaders to understand that the college is willing to prepare programs that respond to their concerns. Considering that many students are from the local area, Parker realizes they are likely to remain in the area after graduation. Therefore, she wants to ensure they are prepared to find jobs in the work force. She faces a few hurdles this year, among them the new performance-funding system that Florida Board of Education approved for its state colleges to help determine how to award $40 million to the institutions. The plan, which will affect all 28 state and community colleges, resembles a larger performance plan that started last year for the state's universities. The colleges are scored in four categories: completion rate, retention, job placement and continuing educa-
tion for graduates and entry-level wages for graduates. At least initially, completion and retention rates will be weighed more heavily than the other two categories. The legislature is joining states in holding institutions accountable for certain outcomes. Performance-based funding certainly is increasingly popular among both state and federal policy makers, who want public institutions to graduate more students, more efficiently. As can be expected, there will be pressure and some colleges will be forced to cope with these funding formulas by using grade inflation or admitting fewer at-risk students. But do not expect Parker to weaken her academic standards. In fact, she is working to ensure those students who typically would not be able to attend the traditional four-year university for academic reasons will be able to feel welcome at her college. One possible solution, Parker thinks, is through more partnerships with k-12 schools to ensure students are more pre-
pared. She also wants to jumpstart the stalled plan to build the first part of the 75-acre campus in Loxahatchee Groves. Parker is no stranger to the operations in Tallahassee having served for more than 10 years as member, vice chair and chair of the Florida Board of Governors of the State University System. So she will ask the legislature for money to complete a 50,000-square foot, three-story building on the new campus off Southern Boulevard. They have received some funding from legislature and other sources but she will continue to seek more money. She has been generous in praising her predecessor, Dr. Dennis Gallon saying he has done a tremendous job in the last 18 years. As she puts it, she is not looking to fill his shoes. Instead, it is just great to have an opportunity to stand on top of it and further the agenda at the college.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Yourself With Others! It’s not good to approach anyone with your pre-conceived ideas about that person. Even if you may dislike certain features of that individual’s life, attempt to spend some time with him or her until you can know for certain whether you want no relationship, or whether you are prepared to view such one in a new and better light. You shall reach that conclusion when you have looked objectively into all you can find out about, and experience with, that individual. In society, people can be far better than you imagine them to be, although there’s always the possibility of some being far worse than you are prepared to believe. Thus, it’s only
by spending enough time with a person in a variety of situations that can furnish you a more solid foundation for reaching a realistic evaluation. In order to reach a reasonable conclusion, always attempt to look at, and understand the person’s heart instead of depending only on the externalities presented by that life. It is imperative that you don’t ascribe finality to whatever you imagine to be the case – any case – until you experience that to be a reality! To avoid confusion among the people you would interact with, seek to show yourself always the same to whomever you meet.
Circumstances will vary, personal attire will be according to the occasion, and many other factors will never be exactly the same in each of the situations you encounter! Yet, your integrity, your attitudes, your commitments, must remain constant regardless of where you are, and with whom you find yourself at any time! You need cultivate your ways with people, and towards people, just as one needs to learn the best routes to reach a desired destination. “Knowing ourselves is basic to delivering a clear message to others,” some expert declared. And this applies not only to addressing a large number of people, but
also to approaching a single person. Each encounter entails a gift of one’s self which can be accepted or declined! Our relationships with other people are a two-way exchange: some will approach you first, but most often the initiative must be yours, seeking people out, do something for someone else, and the rewards will be as much yours as theirs. If you develop your life as an encouragement center, many will gravitate to you, benefit from your hospitality, and ultimately gain much more than you may have anticipated!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Local Student Wins Title of “America’s Top Young Scientist”
Discovery Education and 3M have named 15 year-old Hannah Herbst from Boca Raton, Fla. the winner of the 2015 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Herbst created an energy probe prototype that seeks to offer a stable power source to developing countries by using untapped energy from ocean currents. This innovation was inspired by Herbst’s desire to help her 9-year-old pen pal living in Ethiopia who lacks a reliable source of power and electricity. Herbst’s scientific thinking reflected the competition’s goal of applying science to everyday life, creating a solution that will improve lives and strengthen communities around the globe. Herbst, a ninth grader from Florida Atlantic University High School, competed alongside nine other middle school finalists yesterday during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. She was awarded the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” as well as a $25,000 cash prize. During the past three months, Herbst and the other nine finalists had the exclusive opportunity to work directly with a 3M scientist to develop their personal inventions as part of a unique summer mentorship program. Herbst was paired with Jeffrey Emslander, a 3M corporate scientist whose research and patents have helped 3M reduce emissions to the environment and use less energy in the making of products.
Each of the students collaborated with some of 3M’s top scientists, who provided guidance as they worked through the scientific method to advance their ideas from a theoretical concept into an actual prototype. Together, the mentors and finalists shared their passion for science, reviewed the scientific process and worked virtually through pre-assigned objectives, with resources and support provided by Discovery Education and 3M. During the final competition hosted by Discovery Education’s Lance Rougeux, the finalists shared their completed inventions with a panel of judges, including Hakeem Oluseyi, astrophysicist and star of Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science. In addition to presenting their prototypes, the ten finalists competed in two additional challenges: 1) combining multiple 3M technologies to yield new solutions; and 2) building a simple machine using science and engineering principles. “3M is rooted in scientific exploration and an unwavering belief that every problem has a solution. Watching these middle school students embrace this core belief with such zeal and passion has been truly remarkable,” said Jon Lindekugel, senior vice president, business development at 3M. “Our partnership with Discovery Education underscores our shared values and vision to support the next generation of scientific thinkers as they seek to transform the world. We congratulate them all!” “The Young Scientist Challenge empowers students with the tools and experiences they need to apply science and their critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems,” said Bill Goodwyn, president and CEO, Discovery Education. “We are proud to stand alongside 3M in their efforts to advance STEM education through this unique project-based learning opportunity that celebrates the next generation of innovators, creators, engineers and scientists. We congratulate Hannah Herbst and the rest of this year’s finalists for their innovation and the inspiration they provide middle school students everywhere.”

“He Named Me Malala” is a documentary by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) about the fiercely courageous Malala Yousafzai. Malala was targeted for death by the Muslim extremist group Taliban for daring to speak out in favor of education for females. Since the Taliban came into power in Pakistan, they destroyed 400 schools and forbade females from any education. Such an extreme attitude seems absurd to those of us who believe in freedom of religion, thought, expression and knowledge, but sadly it exists in the 21st century. Malala was shot in the head and gravely injured, but she survived to defy the Tali-
ban at age 15 and went on to address the United Nations and be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. If you have a pulse you will surely be inspired by this amazing young woman. Rating:

DO YOU KNOW columnists THE #1 RISK OF FAITH By Rick Boxx
Business Like Chess, Not Checkers The process of establishing and operating a business used to be simpler. Customers had expectations and businesses responded. Then, with the Internet and other technological advances, the pace of doing things quickened and business became faster and more complex. In Mark Miller’s book, Chess, Not Checkers, he uses a recreational metaphor to remind us of the importance of strategy in business today. In business, playing a responsive game of checkers used to be adequate. One move at a time, react to the opponent’s last move. However, in today’s fast-paced world, well thought-out and executed strategies become crucial to success. A chess champion succeeds by remaining several moves ahead of the competition. So if you have been playing checkers in business, maybe it is time to understand the times and begin playing chess by developing a new strategy. This idea of strategizing is not new. In the Bible’s Old Testament we find a brief description of a family that understood changing times and how to respond. It says, “Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred” (1 Chronicles 12:32) This passage does not describe the problems or issues these “sons of Issachar” were facing, or what they did in response. But two things are clear: They understood the times. In other words, they were very aware of circumstances confronting them and had a firm grasp of the ramifications. They knew what Israel, the people group to which they belonged, should do to address these circumstances, whether they were op-
portunities, challenges, threats or dangers. You can probably think of many examples that reflect our changing times, around the world, within our society, and in the particular industry or profession where you pursue your livelihood every day. Some of these changes come rapidly, often without warning, and at times we find ourselves confused about what we should do. On moments like this a solid deeply rooted faith in God and His divine guidance can offer wisdom, peace and reassurance. Here are examples from Proverbs: Dedicate what you do – or plan to do – to God. An important issue to consider is not only what we intend to do, but what our underlying motivations are. Is our desire simply to grow the business and reap higher profits? Are we seeking primarily to undermine our competitors? Or do we recognize God has placed us where we are, and our desire is to serve Him – and others – in a way that honors and pleases Him? “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:3). Trust God to redirect your plans as He sees fit. Sometimes we devise a plan and become frustrated when it does not go as expected. At times like that it helps to realize God might have a better idea. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). We do not always have to know the “why” behind what happens. Unexpected developments can upset our best-conceived plans, so it is wise to trust in God’s will and direction, since His long-term understanding is far better than our own. “A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way” (Proverbs 20:24).

National Wildlife Refuge Protects Our Natural Resources And Wildlife By Veronica Haggar
National Lands Day, an event in which volunteers from all around the country come together to help preserve and maintain our natural spaces, was celebrated by Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge on Sept. 26th. by planting cypress trees on their public lands. “National Public Lands Day is a nation wide event where people do all kinds of, you know, pull out weeds, or help boardwalks, or whatever is needed on public lands like national wildlife refugees, national parks and all that,” said Elinor Williams, president of Friends of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. A total of 600 seeds of cypress trees were ordered to plant in the public lands. “We were trying to match the kind of trees we have here,” said Williams. “Which the natural native ones are pond cypress.” This part of the land in which the seeds were being planted, used to be infested by Brazilian pepper, a plant classified as a Category I by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council on the 2015 List of Invasive Plant Species and listed as a ‘noxious weed’ by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Farmers cleared the land in order to get rid of all the Brazilian pepper and make room to plant the cypress trees. Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1951 protects the remnant of what was once a vast northern Everglades. The National Wildlife Refuge has been calling volunteers to take action and protect our natural resources and conserve the unique wildlife in Florida. More than 150 volunteers have offered over 14,640 hours of service. “It’s one of 563 national wildlife refugees in the country,” stated Williams about the
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. “The National Wildlife Refuge System is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, their mission is a little bit different from national parks,” explained Williams “National parks prime focus is on people, visitors, and recreation, wildlife refuges were formed basically to protect the habitat for wildlife.” At the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge there are 270 different species of birds, including the endangered snail kites and wood stork. Some other animals that inhabit the Refuge are the American alligators, white-tailed deers, marsh rabbits, rat snakes, bobcats, river otters, Florida cricket frogs, and many others. At the Visitor Center of the Refuge, everyone can appreciate exhibits about the Everglades and water management, listen to night sounds of the Everglades, experience a virtual airboat ride, watch a presentation about the Refuge and the Everglades, kids can crawl in and explore the gator hole, and at the gift shop visitors can purchase souvenirs. “If you come here there’s a Visitor Center that has a lot of exhibits about the Everglades because this is the Everglades, this is the northern everglades,” affirms Williams. Visitors can enjoy trips on canoes or kayaks, take guided bird and nature walks, go fishing, boating, biking, and explore the Marsh Trail, the Butterfly Garden, or the Cypress Swamp Boardwalk. “This cypress forest used to stretch all the way from the eastern shore of lake Okeechobee all the way down to Fort Lauderdale but it was logged,” explained Williams. “This is one of the few remnants that’s left of the cypress swamp that we used to have.”

ALDI to Open First Boca Raton Store This Week
On Thursday, Oct. 15, ALDI, the nation’s low-price grocery leader*, will offer Boca Raton shoppers a smarter alternative as it opens its first Boca Raton store, located at 21759 State Road 7. With more than 1,400 stores in 32 states, ALDI is known for high-quality grocery items at incredibly low prices. To celebrate the opening of the new Boca Raton store, ALDI will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15. The public is invited to attend. Following the ceremony, the first 100 shoppers will receive a golden ticket, each containing ALDI gift certificates of various amounts. Customers can also tour the store, sample ALDI exclusive brand products and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce. ALDI currently carries nearly 70 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including several organic produce items. “We look forward to introducing Boca Raton shoppers to ALDI, where they can find the majority of their average weekly shopping list from our exclusive brand products – including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items – for up to 50 percent** less,” said Chris Hewitt, Royal Palm Beach division vice president for ALDI. “We are committed to bringing ALDI customers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices in a simple and easy-to-navigate shopping environment.” The Boca Raton store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs – to ensure that customers enjoy a shopping experience that is simple and easy to navigate.
In addition to the store’s new look, ALDI will bring shoppers a wide range of new, healthier options like organic produce, USDA Choice beef and the SimplyNature line of products, free of artificial colors, flavors or unnecessary enhancers. ALDI also recently introduced its liveGfreeTM gluten-free product line. Customers can expect to find more than 1,300 of the most commonly purchased items sold under ALDI exclusive brands for prices up to 50 percent less than traditional supermarkets. To ensure its exclusive brands meet or exceed the national brands on taste and quality, ALDIconducts rigorous testing on all products. ALDI stands behind this quality with a Double Guarantee: If for any reason a customer is not 100 percent satisfied with a food product, ALDI will gladly replace the product and refund the customer’s money. ALDI exemplifies efficiency by eliminating overhead costs through smart practices, such as a cart rental system, through which shoppers insert a quarter to release a cart and receive the quarter back upon the cart’s return. Other cost-saving practices include a smaller store footprint, open carton displays and encouragement of customers to bring their own shopping bags. ALDI also saves shoppers money by keeping stores open during prime shopping times. The newest location will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. ALDI accepts cash, debit and EBT cards. Over the next several years, ALDI plans to add an average of 130 new stores each year, expanding the ability to bring grocery savings to more people every day.

Boca Raton FC Routs Miami Storm 6-1
Boca Raton Football Club continues to steamroll past the competition. On Saturday, Boca Raton defeated newcomers Miami Storm FC 6-1 at FIU Stadium to give them the table lead in the 2015 APSL Fall Tournament. Although not the official APSL Season, the Fall Tournament was created by the league in order to keep players fit, and ready to play, especially with the U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Rounds coming up in the next few weeks. Boca Raton got the scoring going early when Stefano Bontempo made it 1-0 five minutes after the first whistle. “Getting a goal early in the match was crucial for the club,” says Bontempo. “The whole team came out ready to play and it showed early.” Boca Raton doubled the score in the 32nd minute when newcomer Xavier Silva but Miami Storm was able to get one goal back in the 44th minute to cut the lead to one. Boca Raton dominated the second half
with over 70% of the ball possesion and the goals to show for it. It started early when C.J. Phelps found Xavier in the middle and launched a perfectly-placed ball on his feet for Xavier’s second of the game, and fourth in two games. “I’m just getting comfortable around the guys,” explained Xavier after the game. “We are starting to click and I’m exicted for what’s to come.” Later in the 68th minute, Scott Gordon, who returned from suspension to play in his first match for his hometown club, cut through the Strom defense and was able to tap the ball into the goal for his first of the tournament and first wearing a Boca Raton FC jersey. “It felt good being back,” said Gordon. “We have a great team and playing for my hometown team is something I’ve been looking forward to since August.” Boca Raton FC wasn’t done, the club was able to exploit a weak Storm right side
and caught the defense off-guard as Shadi Harb was able to head home his first of the tournament. Nickardo Blake later gave Boca Raton more of a cushion when he burried a goal after blasting though the Strom

defense to give Boca the 6-1 lead. Boca Raton returns to action this Saturday at FIU Stadium (north campus) where they take on South Florida FC at 6pm on Saturday.
Strikers To Participate In Florida Cup egoíra Primera A league at FAU Stadium on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the club’s participation in the 2016 Florida Cup, set for January in Orlando, Fla. and South Florida. Strikers General Manager Caio Zanardi made the announcement. Fort Lauderdale will begin play in the nineteam event when they face FC Schalke 04 of the German Bundesliga on January 10 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. One week later, the Strikers will meet Independiente Santa Fe, commonly known as Sante Fe, from Colombia’s Cat-
Clubs from five nations will compete for the 2016 Florida Cup: • Brazil (Campeonato Brasileiro Série A) • Atlético Mineiro; Corinthians; Fluminense; Internacional • Colombia (Categoíra Primera A league) Independiente Santa Fe • Germany (Bundesliga) - Bayer 04 Leverkusen; FC Schalke 04 • Ukraine (Ukrainian Premier League) - FC Shakhtar Donetsk • United States (North American Soccer League) - Fort Lauderdale Strikers Lockhart Stadium will be the host site for two matches: Schalke - Atlético Mineiro on January 13 and Fluminese - Internacional on January 20. Ticket information will be
announced next month. Given the club’s participation in the tournament, the 2016 roster will be assembled prior to the end of the year. Training will commence in early January. Following the Florida Cup, the Strikers will continue training and play friendlies against other international sides before a full slate of preseason matches in advance of the 2016 North American Soccer League Spring Season. “We are excited to play against the world’s best teams,” said Zanardi. “Our participation forces a positive change in that we will be competing nearly year-round. Not only will the games be exciting and challenging tests, they will pay off for the rest of the year in that it will make us stronger for league play.” The Florida Cup, in its second year, is expected to be broadcast via television to more than 125 nations. The tournament will be played as the Strikers, Brazilian and
Colombian sides prepare for their 2016 seasons. The German teams and Shakhtar will be on mid-season break from their respective leagues. Fort Lauderdale’s first opponent, Schalke, is one of the largest clubs in Germany. Founded in 1904, the club currently occupies third place in the Bundesliga in André Breitenreiter’s first season as head coach. Captained by German national team defender Benedikt Höwedes and led by star forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Schalke finished the 2014-15 season in sixth place, earning a place in the 2015-15 UEFA Europa League. Santa Fe, founded in 1941, currently sits fourth in the table in Colombia’s top flight. They are coached by Uraguyan Gerardo Cono Pelusso Boyrie, who was born in Florida. Sante Fe has claimed eight league titles, most recently in 2014.

Two touchdowns after an hour and a half weather delay helped Rice University take a 27-26 victory over the Florida Atlantic University football team Saturday in Conference USA play. “Obviously, it’s a disappointing, heart breaking loss,” FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge said. “There were times there again where it looks like we have the ability to be a good football team. Give all the credit in the world to Rice and Coach Bailiff and their kids, they made plays at the end of the game and made calls that put them in the position to get a win.” Rice (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) struck on the first possession of the game as quarterback Driphu Jackson hit Zach Wright for a 32-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 4:09, 75-yard drive. FAU (1-4, 1-1 C-USA) responded on a 75yard drive over the next 4:50, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jaquez Johnson to Kalib Woods to even the score. As the first quarter drew to a close, Jackson found receiver Connor Cella on a five-yard TD toss to put the Rice Owls back up by seven, at 14-7. Following a Rice punt that pinned FAU back inside its own five-yard line, Johnson connected with Kamrin Solomon for the longest play from scrimmage in program history, a 94-yard touchdown pass to knot the contest at 14. Rice drove into FAU territory on its final possession of the first half before FAU’s Herb Miller broke up a pass in the end zone to hold Rice at the 17-yard line. A missed field goal kept the game in a stalemate as the teams went to intermission. On the opening drive of the second half, Johnson guided FAU into the Rice red zone as Greg Joseph capped off the possession
with a 27-yard field goal to give FAU its first lead of the day. Rice blocked an FAU punt on its next possession to take over at the FAU 16, but FAU’s defense held strong. Sophomore Jerrad Ward earned a sack on second down, followed by a third-down sack by Trey Hendrickson and Trevon Coley to force another field goal attempt. After the second Rice missed field goal of the game by Rice, FAU drove 76 yards for another Joseph field goal to increase FAU’s lead to 20-14. Hendrickson came up with another sack on Rice’s next drive and forced a fumble which was recovered by Coley to give FAU the ball on the Rice 27-yard line at the end of a third quarter. A quarter that saw FAU defense hold Rice to just eight offensive yards. Freshman Trey Rodriguez, in his first collegiate game, carried the ball in from nine yards out on the next FAU drive to inflate FAU’s lead to 26-14. After an hour-and-a-half weather delay, FAU’s two-point conversion attempt failed. Coley was credited with a quarterback hurry to force Rice to turn the ball over on downs on the next drive before FAU was held to its first three-and-out with just 8:02 to play. A 60-yard pass followed by a 21-yard touchdown rush by Jackson gave Rice its first second-half points, slicing the FAU advantage to 26-21 with 7:21 to play. Rice held FAU to one first down on the next possession to get the ball back with 4:51 to play. Jackson marched his squad 83 yards over nine plays and 2:44 and threw a 14-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Darik Dillard for what proved to be the gamewinning score. Rice also failed on a two-point conversion, but FAU was unable to find the end zone on its final possession. “Our offense did everything they could to get down the field and get a game winning field goal, but at the end of the day Rice made a sack on fourth down that ended the game,” Partridge said. “We called a couple timeouts that was about a four second differential for us to get a chance to get a punt return or desperation punt block.” FAU remains at home to host Marshall on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon. The game will be televised on Fox College Sports and broadcast on 106.3 ESPN West Palm. For ticket information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
Lynn Soccer Alum Tim Melia Voted MLS Player of the Week
Lynn University men’s soccer alumnus and Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 31 of the 2015 season, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday. Melia recorded the only MLS shutout in Week 31, his eighth of the season, in a 1-0 road win at the Portland Timbers on Saturday. Melia kept his second clean sheet in a month’s time at Providence Park, becoming the first goalkeeper to hold the Timbers scoreless at home twice in one season in the club’s five-year history. In doing so, he extended Portland’s scoreless streak against Sporting KC to 392 minutes dating back to 2013. The defensive performance came with two rookie SuperDraft picks at outside back (Amadou Dia and Saad Abdul-Salaam) along with three Kansas City natives (Matt Besler, Kevin Ellis and Erik Palmer-Brown) on the backline in front of Melia. Krisztian Nemeth came off the bench to score a stunning 83rd-minute game-winner and
Sporting KC snapped the Timbers 14-game home unbeaten streak against Western Conference opponents. A two-year starter from 2006-07, Melia garnered Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year accolades in his final season when he went 14-2-1 overall with eight shutouts, a 0.80 goals-against average and helped lead the Fighting Knights to a NCAA South Region Finals appearance. Over his career, he tallied 28 victories, 18 shutouts and a 0.65 GAA along with a .794 save percentage. Melia, in his first season as an MLS starter, logged six saves in the victory and is the first KC goalkeeper since Kevin Hartman in 2008 to make six saves in four different matches during a regular season campaign. In addition, he was credited with three punches on Saturday and leads all MLS goalkeepers with 31 punches this year. Melia is 14-6-5 as a starter for Sporting KC this season with a 1.14 goals against average across all competitions. He started all five matches in the club’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship run, making seven saves in last week’s final in addition to two stops in the penalty shootout. The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from North American Soccer Reporters. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
