Community FAU Receives $5 Million Gift from Christine E. Lynn

Continue from page 1

When a student-athlete requires additional care, rooms will be available for FAU team doctors to provide necessary medical examinations and treatments. Over the past 30 years, Lynn has supported nursing, healthcare and education with unwavering dedication, said FAU President John Kelly. “Christine Lynn understands the importance of quality healthcare and has demonstrated a personal commitment to enhancing community healthcare resources while supporting education,” Kelly said. “FAU has enormous potential and continues to be an irresistible draw for the best and brightest students. Lynn’s philosophy strongly aligns with FAU’s mission.” Lynn’s philanthropic efforts have provided much to the University, including a generous $10 million gift to fund and name the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing

building in 2001, as well as various other gifts to the College of Nursing; the College of Business; the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine; the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center; and FAU’s peace studies program within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. “I’m delighted to make this gift in honor of my friends, Dick and Barbara Schmidt, who have done so much for our community and have committed to a state-of-the-art facility, the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence, here at FAU,” Lynn said. “And I’m excited to have the Sports Medicine Center named after me. As a former nurse, I believe everyone should have the best of care.” Lynn currently serves as chairman of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Board of Trustees, and is the former chairman of the board of Lynn Insurance Group. She

is a 2013 recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given to a distinguished American citizen who exemplifies a life dedicated to community service and who makes a better world for all. Lynn has been awarded honorary degrees from FAU, Lynn University, Stetson University and the American College of Dublin. Among the many other honors she has received include the Outstanding Philanthropic Award for Leadership from Rotary International and the International Humanitarian Award from the American College of Dublin. The Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence will play a central role to elevate FAU’s academic standing and will benefit students in all academic programs, including those not associated with athletic programs. The facility received initial funding of $16 million from the Schmidt Family Foundation, the largest single gift in FAU’s history, along with a $1

million gift from FAU benefactor Eleanor R. Baldwin. The Complex will be constructed adjacent to FAU Stadium. In addition to the Christine E. Lynn Sports Medicine Center, a student-athlete academic and leadership center, the state-of-the-art facilities also will include the Eleanor R. Baldwin History and Traditions Hall, as well as centers for strength and conditioning, health and wellness and an indoor training facility. “FAU’s student-athletes, coaches and staff are humbled by Christine Lynn’s generosity,” said Pat Chun, vice president and director of athletics at FAU. “Not only has she transformed our local community and University through her philanthropy, but she is a wonderful example on how to make a difference. Her gift will impact current and future student-athletes and for that we are thankful.”

All Lives Matter By Dahlia Gabby Black lives matter! That has become a familiar buzz everywhere you go. But what does it really means? Well, for me all lives matter because we were created equally in the sight of God. As we read in Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image…” He didn’t say, “Let’s create a black man or a white man.” Instead, God created man in his own image. As the proud Jamaican mother of 14-yearold black son, I am especially aware of the stigma that is associated with being black in America. Growing up in my beautiful country of Jamaica, I experienced a class system. I was not only judged by the shade of brown or the kinkiness or length of my hair but also by my education level or the

number of degrees I earned. Here in America however, you are judged by the color of your skin. How unfair is that? Blacks in our society - whether young, old, immigrants or non-immigrants - are subjected to racial profiling and discrimination just because of their skin color. We have all read the story of Eric Garner, the Staten Island, New York, resident who died after a police officer put him in a chokehold in July 2014. Witnesses said Mr. Garner repeatedly told the officers he could not breathe but his pleas went unanswered and resulted in his death. I should point out that Mr. Garner died because he was selling cigarettes to support his family. Oh my God, killed for selling cigarettes? Ok he’s dead, no more

cigarette selling on the corner, or so we think. This leads me to ask the question who will take care of his family? Does the lives he left behind matter? Of course they matter. As I said, all lives matter. I have read and heard of too many cases of our young brothers and sisters unfortunately were killed by trigger-happy police officers. Some were killed because they were armed with a baseball bat, a BB gun or a knife. I recall the case of Levi Weaver, an 18-yearold Georgia man who asked the police to kill him last September. Welding a baseball bat and a kitchen knife, Weaver lunged at the officers inside his home and was fatally shot. I wonder what was the officer thinking

when the obviously disturbed young man begged him to shoot him. Don’t get me wrong, as I said before, all lives matter, black and white. I expect the officer to protect himself first but I also expect him to use the training he got to address the situation instead of using deadly force. The officer shot Weaver twice. The Black Lives Matter! movement did not just started. As far back as in slavery black people have been struggling to prove that they were humans. And the struggle continues today. The only difference is that we now drive a car or wear a suit and if we are lucky we sit across from our white counterparts in a cubicle. We still struggle to be equal to them. What it boils down to, all lives matter.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Exercising the Mind Unfortunately I’m not as well-rounded in life as I wish I could be; physical exercise, especially sports, has never been for me the priority it should’ve been! Nevertheless, I’m most grateful that my mind is still functioning, and it is continually in ever-forward motion. I’m able to exercise it every day with great gain, both for myself and for others, through what I’m able to contribute. Just as my personal lack of physical play is not good, the absence of thinking on the part of so many is equally deplorable. A mind requires consistent exercise which the body also needs, and both only require proper time apportioned every day for each appropriate function.

Liberate your mental powers for the regular exercises that always bring lasting results. When brains are free from chains, they only produce solid gains! God has given a brain to every human not to remain unused, or dormant, but as a tremendous resource to be faithfully utilized. It is good that so much can be created and maintained through the use of one’s physical frame, but it is of equal, if not greater significance, that which can be accomplished through the disciplined use of one’s mental powers! Reading daily, engaging in meaningful conversations, and knowing how to benefit from what experts share of their knowledge and productivity in some significant field,

are among several available resources that can be utilized. They represent potent fuel to stimulate one’s thinking, and offer additional insights on new or old issues already in consideration. Every new idea read or heard, often provokes our own unique responses that amplify what one is already considering or, perhaps, carrying a certain idea into other levels, or directions. That’s how inventions occur, existing products are improved, new literature is produced, practical experiments are carried into fruition, and technological and scientific wonders come into being. Indeed, the age of inventions and novel explorations has not ended. Magnificent new surprises shall still be revealed as the hu-

man mind remains active, engaged in new thoughts that someday shall introduce us all to unexpected and fascinating achievements for the benefit of humankind. The Creator, from the beginning, had issued a cultural mandate which is still being executed in the exploration of reality, whereby significant new wonders are still coming to pass. But this will never expand through empty and unused minds; only through those determined to advance into unexplored frontiers, and produce what can benefit the human race. May new generations rise to the challenges, and respond with their brain in a most excellent way!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Friends, Family: Slain Drummer is God-fearing Man Who Dedicated His Life to Doing The Right Thing said he did not want to jeopardize the Sheriff ’s Office investigation. Several people including the head of the police union and the U.S. congressman representing the area urged Stepp to be transparent. “We don’t want another Ferguson,” said John Kazanjian, president of the Palm Beach County PBA. “They need to get out there and address the public... chief, get out there and tell the public what is going on.” U.S. Rep. Patrick E. Murphy, a Democrat representing the Jupiter area, said he joins the entire community in mourning. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this terrible time,” Murphy said in a statement. “While all the details of Corey’s death are still not known, I am deeply concerned. Corey’s family deserves answers and an open and transparent investigation. Our whole community deserves nothing less, and I will be doing everything I can to ensure all the facts come to light. We must come together — not only to find out what happened, but also to prevent such tragedies in the future.” Jones’ family has hired high-profile Civil Rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, whose firm Parks & Crump also represented the families of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin. Brown was fatally shot by an officer in Ferguson, Mo., last year and drew a public outcry; Rice, a black 12-year-old was shot and killed by Cleveland police and Martin, an unarmed black Miami Gardens teen shot and killed in 2012 in Sanford by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Members of Jones’ church said they knew something was wrong when Jones did not show up for services at the Bible Church of God in Boynton Beach Sunday morning. Jones has strong community ties in Boynton Beach and Belle Glade. He is the grandson of Bishop Sylvester Banks, a highly respected community leader in the Boynton Beach community and founder of the Bible Church of God. His brother, Clinton “C.J.” Jones, played football with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. He also is the cousin of current NFL player Anquan Boldin, a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. In a statement through their attorney, Jones’ family thanked supporters for their prayers. “Corey Jones was a God-fearing man who dedicated his life to doing the right thing. He lived every moment to the fullest and was an inspiration to many; the kind of son, brother and friend people could only hope for,” the statement read. “We will never forget Corey. We are hopeful that the memory of his smiling face will give us strength during this incredibly difficult time.”

By CRA News Service In the wake of the fatal shooting of a popular Boynton Beach musician by a Palm Beach Gardens police officer, friends and family of Corey Jones say he was a godfearing man who was non- confrontational. “He was always a giving person, a person who was very low key, not the aggressive type, always willing to get along and to try to make things better for people,” said David Banks, Jones’ uncle and the pastor at Bible Church of God in Boynton Beach, where Jones played the drums and worshipped since birth. “He will be greatly missed because he was a wonderful man.” Jones, 31, was shot and killed shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday by the officer who stopped to inspect Jones’ grey Hyundai Sante Fe, which had broken down at the foot of the PGA Boulevard exit ramp near Interstate 95. Jones, the assistant manager of the Delray Beach Housing Authority and a drummer with various bands around the county, was heading home after working in Jupiter with his band, Future Prezidents, when he called a family member to report that his car broke down. Officer Nouman Raja, in plainclothes and an unmarked police car, was working a burglary detail in the area, stopped to check out the car, which he thought was abandoned, Palm Beach Gardens Police Chief Stephen Stepp said at a news conference on Tuesday. Raja, 38, had been parked in a nearby lot, the chief said. “As the officer exited his vehicle, he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject,” Officer Ellen Lovejoy, the department’s spokesperson, wrote in a news release. “As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm.” Stepp said investigators found a handgun outside the car, and a box with a matching serial number was found inside Jones’ car. They also found a receipt that shows that Jones bought the gun three days before the shooting, the chief said. Raja has been placed on administrative leave, a standard department protocol, while the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office conducts an investigation. There was no dashboard-camera footage of the incident and the department does not issue body cameras to its officers. A 2008 of the police academy, Raja began his career at the Atlantis Police Department where he worked until he was hired in Palm Beach Gardens in April. He was a patrol sergeant in Atlantis and had a clean record, his former boss, Chief Robert Mangold, said. Raja is a part-time adjunct instructor at Palm Beach State College’s police academy. The Palm Beach Gardens police department came under fire after the chief initially declined to release any information. Stepp

There are at least 8 million stories about the Holocaust. Very few are told from the point of view of a child. “Run Boy Run” is based on a novel by Uri Orlev, which we are told is based on a true story that occurred in Poland in World War II. Srulik (Andrzej Tkacz as young Srulik and Kamil Tkacz as an older Srulik) is an 8-year-old boy from the Polish Jewish ghetto whose entire family is wiped out in the Nazi invasions of 1942. Srulik flees Warsaw and hides out in the snowy, freezing woods. He finds a friendly Christian farm woman who takes him in out of pity and tells him to change his name to the more

Catholic-sounding Jurek Stanlak. Srulik adapts well to his new Christian identity, but there is peril at every corner. As the title implies, “Run Boy Run” is a series of narrow escapes by the plucky, resourceful boy. The story is not without a certain amount of humor leavening the terror, for Srulik suffers terribly. The Tkacz brothers are enormously appealing and emotive. The movie amounts to an exciting adventure that sees the terror of the Holocaust from a fresh young viewpoint. Rating: 1/2

What are your greatest strengths in the workplace? In other words, how would you describe the unique mix of talents, abilities and experience you have to offer to your company or organization? Sometimes we refer to these as “gifts,” and might comment that someone is particularly “gifted” in certain areas, such as leadership, administration, marketing, handling finances, investing, team building, communicating, and many other functions necessary for success in the marketplace. In considering our own traits, we often view them in terms of our own success - being able to earn a desired pay raise, meriting a promotion, receiving professional recognition, or achieving many other personal goals. But how often have you thought that perhaps your unique gifts are not primarily for your benefit, but for others? A friend pointed this out during a recent conversation. Being a writer and editor, I enjoy my craft - working with words to communicate ideas, concepts and principles I have found to be important and meaningful. I receive a measure of pleasure and satisfaction from the work I do. But ultimately, if what I have to convey through the written word is not shared with others, or found by them to be of value, in reality I am wasting my time. Years ago I heard a man recite a brief poem that made a lot of sense: “A bell is not a bell until it is rung; a song is not a song until it is sung; now love was not given in your heart to stay - for love is not love until you give it away.”

In a similar manner, we might say a personal gift we possess is not truly a “gift” until we give it away for the benefit of others. We might derive some results from the use of our gifts, but ultimately we have them to serve our companies, our clients and customers, shareholders and others. In the Bible we find a discussion of “spiritual gifts,” traits such as evangelism, faith, wisdom, healing, teaching and others. Each is given “for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). The passage then proceeds to compare these separate gifts with the individual parts of the human body, noting they are not intended to function independently but rather in concert with other organs. “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.... As it is, there are many parts, but one body” (1 Corinthians 12:17-19). We are sometimes tempted to take special pride in our distinctive talents and abilities. We must never forget, however, our success depends on the support of others with different capabilities. And we are urged to appreciate the contributions of others, just as we would hope they recognize our own. “But God has combined the members of the body...so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other” (1 Corinthians 12:24-25).

November 2015

In my recent article, I gave an overview and brief history of the downtown to bring awareness to the process of development in our community. I could belabor the exhaustive legal process our city leaders and private citizens engaged in to get our current zoning ordinances enacted. For time sake, let’s say it was an arduous process. Over the next three articles, I intend to focus on the on-going passionate discourse on design quality, adherence to original zoning laws or interim guidelines, development or over development and its positive or negative impact on our city. Like all important matters, there will always be two passionate parties lobbying their position. This issue has everyone hyped up and in some cases, dug in on their opinion. It is not my objective to dismiss ones opinion or the other. Instead, I would like to encourage and foster a broader understanding of Design and the important decisions we are facing Downtown. Let’s start with the hottest topic:) Is “The Mark” on Target with our new vision for Downtown Boca Raton? - There are many critics discussing this. However, I emphatically believe it is. All architecture and design in general is subject to criticism and personal opinions. In fact, our Architectural education process includes very stressful Review Pin-ups which are criticized and judged. In a community, the Public, our Architectural Peers, our Clients and just about everyone else is a critic. I have very strong positive feelings about The Mark AND I also see areas where it can be improved. But then again, I see that with my own projects. I am certain my highly respected, award winning colleague, Jaun Cacyedo of RLC Architects is doing more critically judging of his work than we are. That is what we Architects do. However, I believe the lack of color was a missed opportunity to express and enhance the building’s strongest architectural features which are excellent. The ground floor pedestrian realm and dark windows detract from communicability to the street. The garage side of the building(The most discussed aspect) is massive and unbroken as required in the Interim Design Guidelines “IDG”. Last, portions of the building’s modern vocabulary seem unfinished and unarticulated in our city’s historic “Addison Mizner” context. What I can say is that developing a project of this magnitude involved

www.bocaratontribune.com

thousands of decisions to create it. The stakeholders including Ownership, Architects, City Officials, Urban Design Associates, and Citi-zens were all involved. I am not clear how the building represented in the Interim Design Guide-lines was allowed to be altered to the building constructed today, This only indicates that the review and approval process can be improved. It does not mean we should abandon the plan for our Downtown. What I will affirm is The Mark has many significantly important attributes we need in our Down-town. It is a successful in-fill urban plan. It threads together Palmetto Place, Royal Palm Place and our beloved Bank of America Building in contextual scale. The commercial ground spaces will energize Plaza Real South and the 400 plus residents will utilize and enjoy the restaurants and services in and about the Royal Palm Place and Mizner Park areas. People living in our Downtown IS VITAL to creating an exciting pedestrian realm. The new Hyatt will further compli-ment this urban plan. We are already seeing this positive impact from the residents of the Cam-den walking across Federal Highway at night heading to Royal Palm Place for dinner. Despite many current opinions, The Mark’s modern architectural style brings variety to our Downtown. Variety in a downtown is critically important to creating good cities. Friends, Design will always be subjective. If you want to see this in action, sit in on any Architec-tural Jury Review or attend one of our weekly City Community Appearance Board meetings. Even my respected architectural colleagues who sit on this Board and who are educated experts, technically trained in design principles, historic irrefutable precedents and proven case studies, will debate their personal design opinions vehemently. Who is right then? Add in com-munity stakeholders like the residents who live, work and play here, the civic leaders, planning departments, developers, businesses, commercial retailers/service providers and of course our visitors and the opinions multiply infinitely. So I ask again, Who is right? In my next article, I will discuss the Interim Design Guidelines and the Architectural Pattern Book. Design Matters friends…….. Douglas A. Mummaw, AIA, NCARB

$670,000 Taylor Swift didn’t disappoint with a remarkable performance in a grand set stage linked to a long cat walk with creative backdrops. Fans, in the majority teen girls, were holding electric colorful signs and sang along just about every song performed in the show. One of the highlights of her show was a stage visit from Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, who announce to the AmericanAirlines Arena crowd, “I’ve played here for 13 years and I’ve never heard it this loud.” Wade presented Taylor with a Heat jersey that had her name on the back. Surprise guests included performances of Pitbull and Ricky Martin.

Tom Sawyer Restaurant and Pastry has been around for 30 years now and still fascinates the locals and captivates the visitors with it’s delicious breakfast, lunch, and their heavenly brunch menu. The restaurant has an interesting concept of serving only breakfast and lunch during weekdays and brunch during weekends, closing early during the day. “I bought this place almost eight years ago,” said Alain Tallard, owner of the glorious restaurant and pastry. “I think it was, at the beginning, a breakfast place open only at night because it was a bar before on the side and they did some breakfast for the people in the bar and then after they opened later in the morning until 2 o’clock, like today.” Since Tom Sawyer has been around for quite some time now, there are a lot of customers that have become loyal to the restaurant. “I go to Tom Sawyer around twice a month,” said Whitney Foster, loyal customer at Tom Sawyer. “I love the atmosphere and amazing food.” The restaurant has a variety of exquisite options on the menu like the Breakfast Skillet, which is an all in one skillet, cooked with home fries and cheese, two eggs, and

a choice of biscuits, toast, or English muffin. Customers can choose the style of the skillet from western, three meats, or veggie skillet. “My favorite dish is the same thing I order probably 80% of the time, croissant French toast with eggs, bacon and a Cali cup on the side,” said Foster. “My second favorite is definitely the breakfast skillet with bacon.” The House Breakfast Specials are named after Mark Twain and his beloved characters, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Aunt Polly. It also includes a French, Country, and English breakfast. “It’s a country breakfast that means a lot of food in the plate,” explained Tallard. “We do a lot of things like french toast, which is really good, the french croissant, we have also cinnamon,” said Tallard. “We have some dish, a dish we only have here, it’s called ‘Breakfast in a Pot’ and it’s a big pot with everything inside, some sausage and everything inside, you need to see it.” Tom Sawyer has opened a second location in West Palm Beach, which brings back the original “restaurant and bar” concept. “The menu for breakfast and lunch is exactly the same. The restaurant over there is bigger than this one because we have a bar, that’s why we’re open at night,” stated Tallard. “At night it’s like we have country food but we have also some shrimp, and couple of different things, but it’s almost the same atmosphere than here, everything is in wood,” described Tallard. “It’s very nice over there.” The restaurant hasn’t changed much since Tallard bought it. The menu is still based on country food. “What I did is all the decoration,” declared Tallard. “I changed the floor, I changed the decoration but almost all the booth were here, the tables were here, I didn’t change too much it was like original.” “I feel like I’m in a little cottage up north every time I walk in, especially during the holidays with all the twinkling lights,” said Foster about the decor of the restaurant. With a wide variety of yummy options, friendly staff, and affordable meals, Tom Sawyer is definitely Boca’s top choice for breakfast, lunch, and brunch.

Owls Dominates FIU 31-17 in Shula Bowl

Freshman Trey Rodriguez lit up FAU Stadium in his first Shula Bowl to give the Florida Atlantic University football team a 31-17 victory over rival FIU on Saturday. “There were some things that happened today that I’m proud of,” FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge said. “Hopefully we can start some trends. My mind goes to the third quarter, we have a 17-10 lead coming out of halftime. Richard Leonard is one of the best returners I’ve seen in my career. He’s a special kick returner/punt returner. He hits his first 60+ (return), it gets called back because a block in the back. We have some things happen, get them to third and long, we convert with a surprise run on third and long and our defense holds them to a field goal. At this point, I think everyone watching was thinking, ‘How’s Florida Atlantic going

to respond?” “Our offense responds by working their way back down the field. Jaquez [Johnson] fights to convert on fourth and four, which ends up leading to a touchdown to put (the score) at 24-10,” Partridge said. “So that’s a moment in the game where I said, ‘Alright our kids are starting to grow up here’.” The Daytona Beach native carried the ball 20 times for 95 yards to single-handedly out-gain Panthers’ (4-5, 2-3 C-USA) ground attack by nearly 30 yards. Rodriguez also scored the first points of the game to give FAU a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, a minimum margin the Owls (2-6, 2-3 C-USA) would hold for the game’s entirety. Quarterback Jaquez Johnson returned to form, completing 10 passes for 113 yards while rushing for 64 more. Trey Hendrickson tied an FAU single-season record with 7.5 sacks, earning 2.5 on the day along with freshman Hunter Snyder. The Owls posted 397 yards of total offense while holding FIU to 262. FAU scored on five of its eight drives, only being forced to punt once as it marched into FIU territory on every possession.

On FIU’s first drive of the game, Hendrickson wrapped up quarterback Alex McGough, allowing freshman Azeez Al-Shaair to force a fumble which Nate Ozdemir recovered at the FIU 32-yard line. Five plays later, Rodriguez put the Owls on the board with a five-yard touchdown run, his fourth in as many games. Redshirt freshman Jason Driskel took the snaps for the Owls on their next possession and went 6-of-6 for 55 yards through the air before finishing off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Sacks by Snyder and Hendrickson on the next FIU possession backed the Panthers up a total of 23 yards, forcing a punt to give the Owls the ball at their own 35. Johnson led the squad into the red zone again before Greg Joseph made a 25-yard field goal to increase the advantage to 17-0. The Panthers ended the shutout threat on their final drive of the first half as McGough picked up a one-yard touchdown rush to send the teams into the locker room at 17-7 FAU. The third quarter saw just two possessions as FIU ate up 9:15 off the clock on a 16-play, 65-yard drive culminating in a 47-yard field

goal by Austin Taylor to make it a one-possession game. FAU responded with a 17-play, 78 yard drive over the next 8:04, featuring seven carries by Rodriguez, including a one-yard touchdown run to put the Owls back up 24-10. The FAU defense held FIU at midfield on the next two drives, forcing a fumble to stop one drive before Jalen Young snagged a McGough interception and returned it 58 yards to blow the lead up to 31-10. It was the Owls third pick six of the season and all have been by true freshmen. A 23-yard kickoff return set FIU up with a short field on its next play, allowing the Panthers to score on a 22-yard pass to chip away at the lead with 1:33 to play. FAU freshman Ralph Leonard recovered FIU’s onside kick attempt, allowing the Owls to run the clock out in victory formation to win their tenth Shula Bowl in the 13th meeting. The Owls go on the road to face WKU on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Noon. That contest will be televised on Fox Sports Network, carried on 106.3 ESPN West Palm and on www. fausports.com.

Baker Named Conference USA Co-Coach of the Year Florida Atlantic University Women’s Soccer Head Coach Patrick Baker was named the Conference USA co-Coach of the Year for leading the Owls to a 12-7-1 record, including a seven-match undefeated streak to end the regular season. FAU was selected to finish seventh in the preseason poll and climbed through the ranks to earn a No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Owls boast the second best offense and second best defense in the tournament, outscoring opponents 17-7 in C-USA play. “I am flattered and humbled that my conference peers consider the season that we have had worthy of this recognition,” Baker said. “There were several teams that posted tremendous seasons and I feel there were a number of coaches who easily could have received this honor as well. The award is a true credit to the overall effort put forth be every member of our program this year. Our play-

ers, Coach [Michael} Crane, Coach [Jordan] Reppell and our High Performance Team are just as much a part of this award as I am. My staff is excellent and we have worked tirelessly to change the complexion of the program over the past two years. It was a remarkable turnaround season - both non-conference and conference - and one that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone associated with our program. We look forward to continuing to build and grow our program and hope to put together several more seasons like this in the near future.” Baker placed five players on the All-Conference USA squads, including a pair of players who anchored the fierce FAU defense all season in Erica Burt and Sydney Drinkwater. Offensively, Claire Emslie, Geovana Alves and Asta Arnadottir all garnered honors as well. “Coach Baker is looked up as not just a

coach, but also a father figure to this team,” FAU captain Gabriella Sosa said. “He has helped the program tremendously by not just his coaching skills, but all the extra help he did behind closed doors. I never met someone who works so hard at what he does. He truly loves his job and I’m honored to be playing for him. He makes me want to never stop playing soccer because he just makes the sport that much greater. His organization and leadership assets and his love for the game and the girls is the reason why I’m not surprised he got awarded coach of the year. He deserves it and I’m grateful to be playing for his team.” Baker shared the Coach of the Year honor with Marshall’s Kevin Long. “Congratulations to Coach Kevin Long on this award as well,” Baker said. “What a remarkable season at Marshall and he deserves a great deal of credit for that teams success

Boca Raton FC Advances in U.S. Open Cup

They needed extra time, but Boca Raton Football Club defeated Real Miami CF 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Broward College to advance in the U.S. Open Cup Qualifiers. Boca Raton will now face Uruguay Kendall on November 21 after the Miami team defeated Red Force 3-0. “Uruguay Kendall is a quality team,” says Marcelo Castillo. “Last season we played them for both the regular season title and APSL Championship. They are a tough group and we look forward to the challenge.”

Boca started off Sunday flat versus a Real Miami squad that was hungry for their first win versus the current APSL Champions and they held their own. Boca Raton was able to counter and forward Colby Burdette had numerous opportunities to score both in the first and second half but was unable to find the back of the net. In the second half, tensions began to flare. Forward Xavier Silva and Real Miami’s Franco Gianotti were shown straight reds after the Real Miami defender tackled him to the ground and had a scuffle.

After numerous attempts by Boca to get on the scoreboard, highlighted by Scott Gordon’s blast from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar, both teams headed into extra time tied at 0-0. In less than four minutes into overtime, C.J. Phelps fielded a ball in the Boca Raton backfield and fed it to Santhonax who played a beautiful through ball to former Fort Lauderdale Striker, Nickardo Blake, who dribbled past two defenders and had a beautifully placed cross that found Shadi Harb who headed it home past the keeper to give Boca the 1-0 lead in overtime. “We had possession of the ball. We were moving it side to side when Nikardo got it on the right and took two defenders on with his speed all the way to the end line inside of the 18-yard box,” explains Harb. “When I saw this, I started sprinting because I knew he would cross it. He raised his head and gave me a perfect pass in the air. I got ahead of the defender that was marking me, jumped and head the ball across the goalkeeper.” “It felt like one of the biggest rewards because we had so many chances throughout the game and dominated the game for the most part,” added Harb. “It was a whole team effort and I’m happy I was able to contribute to it.” In the second overtime, Real Miami’s Jorge

Salgado was taken down just outside the box, which set up a dangerous opportunity for Real Miami. Alonzo Hernandez took the shot with a beautiful curve that left Boca keeper, Alan Trani with no way of defending, giving the home team the 1-1 tie. Preparing for the 1-1 draw, head coach Marcelo Castillo brought in keeper Derrick Santos to relieve Trani. Upon restart of play, Colby Burdette found a streaking Gabe Taboada down the left side. Burdette’s cross was just out of the reach of the Real Miami defense but perfectly placed in Taboada’s feet. Two touches later, Taboada’s shot was in the back of the net at the last minute of the second overtime giving Boca Raton the go-ahead goal that qualified the club to the next round. “It was a very high-intensity game,” said Burdette after the game. “Both teams were hungry for the win but at the end I was able to get Gabe on a run to finish the game.” “Colby had a sensational cross,” adds Taboada. “I was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. I’m glad I was able to once again come through for my teammates.” Boca Raton will now face Uruguay Kendall in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup on November 21.
