Boca Raton Toy Drive Gets Ready For Ninth Year

The Ninth Annual Rotary Carousel Day will be taking place on December 6h at Sugar Sand Park. Seems like it was just yesterday when it all started while Douglas Heizer, former president of Boca Rotary Sunset, was watching the news and saw Wayne Barton came on asking for toy donations to give to the needy children of Boca Raton. Right after, Heizer decided to give him a call. “How can I help?” Heizer recalled saying. It was then where The Rotary Carousel Day was born. A day in which chil-

African-American pioneers had been interviewed, as had Japanese immigrants to the Yamato colony. Interviews also recorded the roles of the city’s distinguished pioneer women. But what about the Jewish community, which started with a single family in 1931 and which historians say has grown to almost half the population of the city? Historians agreed to start immediately filling this gap, which they considered urgent as some pioneers have died over the past few years. The society plans about 25 interviews, which it will post on a website and YouTube. Members also plan to make a documentary. Community Boca’s Most Historic Places Depicted in Beautiful Ornaments

By Veronica Haggar The beauty of Boca Raton’s most remarkable places has been captured and portrayed in an ornament series by Boca Raton Garden Club.

The 3-dimensional art pieces come out during the holiday season just in time to decorate the Christmas trees. The ornament series started 22 years ago in 1994, with the Old Town Hall as the very first ornament of the collection. This year’s ornament honors Spanish River Park. “Every year since 1994, we have come up with a different location in Boca,” said Carol Rice, ornament chairman at the Boca Gardening Club. “We try to pick a historic location in Boca. Most of them are historic and others are just very important.” Boca Raton Garden Club has run out of the earliest ornaments from the 90s. “We’re lucky if we have one or two,” said Rice about the earliest ornaments from the series. “We do not re-order when we run out because the ornaments are collectibles.” The ornaments’ value goes up through the years. The oldest the ornament, the more expensive the price would be. When an ornament comes out, it can be purchased for $18 each. “If I had the very first ornament to sell you

3,000 People in Need Enjoyed Thanksgiving Dinner At the 32nd Anniversary of Feed the Hungry

Congregation B’nai Israel’s Kantor Family Center for Justice and the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton, partnered to serve Thanksgiving dinner to over 3,000 people in need. This was the 32nd year of the annual event, which was held on Tuesday, November 24th at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton. The event brought the community together, with participants singing and dancing in a party-like atmosphere. DzIt was a really festive event, with children playing, dancing and singing. The kids particularly enjoyed Harriet Rubin and the Boca Point Clowns On Call, who did facepainting, tableside magic and balloon art. Everyone from the community came together for a true celebration of Thanksgiving,dz Rabbi Silvers of Congregation B’nai Israel, said. Congregation B’nai Israel provided 300 volunteers for the event and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church had more than 100 volunteers on site. Mayor Susan Haynie, Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth and City Councilman Scott Singer dished out food. 88 turkeys, 1600 chicken pieces and 300 pounds of cranberry sauce were donated and served. Area country clubs, including Boca West Country Club, Mizner Country Club, St. Andrews Country Club, Boca

Grove, Addison Reserve and The Polo Club donated 1500 servings of sweet potatoes and broccoli. Thomas Produce donated 300 pounds of green beans, 300 pounds of squash and 300 pounds of peppers. Participants this year included individuals and families served by a number of local nonprofit organizations, including In the Pines-South, Florence Fuller Development Center, Jim and Jan Moran Boys and Girls Club, JARC, Propel Youth Organization, Pearl City Cats, Barton’s Boosters, Let’s Grow Well Together, Boca Love Outreach, Caridad Center, The Jewish Association for Residential Care, The Lord’s Place, The American Association of Caregiving Youth, and The Farmworker’s Council. Homeless people, as well as people living in transitional housing, were invited as well. Food, beverages, and other products and services were donated or discounted by Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, Forster Family Food Pantry, VIP Caterers, Thomas Produce, Office Depot Foundation, Augie’s Restaurant, Publix, Hurricane Wings, Stallone’s, The Sidewalk Chef - Shashank Agtey, Sous Chef - T.J. Boeninghaus, Sunquest Nursery, Vicky & Gary Weiner Family and members of both participating congregations.

which was the Old Town Hall, that one is $100,” states Rice. “Then the second ornament is another example, the Train Depot, I believe that one is $75. We don’t raise the value every single year but just once in awhile.” Rice is one of the two members in the committee who decide what place will be depicted next as an ornament. This year is the first time that a park has been chosen to be done. “What I usually do is I make a visit to the Boca Historical Society,” said Rice explaining how she finds the inspiration for an ornament. “For Spanish River Park, they brought out files of old articles about the park, and in one of those files there was a black and white photograph of this, of what the ornament is,” continued Rice. The ornaments come out a little different from the photographs due to all the 3-dimensional details added to it, which makes it more appealing. The proceeds from the ornaments benefit many educational and environmental projects and also help fund scholarships awarded by the Boca Raton Garden Club. Audra Wells Mark - The Passing of a Gentle Giant The education community has lost one of its greatest innovators with the recent passing of Audra Wells Mark. The Boynton Beach resident was best known as an educator, author and innovator, but she was so much more: educational consultant, career counselor, trainer, brain research specialist, talk show producer, blog radio show host, a dedicated wife and mother and a good humanitarian. On Saturday night, diabetes, a ‘Cinderella disease’ for decades, cut short the life of this woman who was dedicated to improving the world through education and innovation. She is perhaps best known for leading corporate training and professional development workshops and for using nontraditional methods of teaching mathematics and science to students. Her work has had a major impact on many educators and administrators nationally and internationally in their approaches to curriculum and instruction. Along with the many hats she wore, the 1989 Santaluces High School graduate worked as a career counselor for Palm Beach State College since 2004. Her website bears testimonials from several parents, educators and former students touting the impact that Mrs. Mark made in their lives.

Lisa VanBalveren says, “Mrs. Mark has been a dream come true for a child who really wants to learn. She makes learning easy, and extremely fun.” There is no question about the impact she has had on the use of music in schools and classrooms. She saw the power and promise of rap music, what it could do for students and how it could enliven education a long time ago. Parent Sonja Woodard knew Mrs. Mark’s influence first-hand. “Mrs. Mark’s program is wonderful!” she wrote. “My child immediately loved the music and now he does the work without being told to do it. His grades have risen dramatically and he is now a happier child.” I first met Mrs. Mark several years ago when I was affiliated with an after-school program in Delray Beach. What struck me was her warmth and genuine caring attitude to make a difference. Over the years, we would often joke that since I couldn’t get her to work for my program, one day we would forge a partnership together. I visited her school several times and quickly saw that she was genuinely concerned with how students learned. This was a woman who was brilliant, and was years ahead in

thinking on how to reform the current public education system. Each time I visited the school at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Delray Beach, her students would perform the quadrilateral song and sing about the 26 bones that make up the body. They also can recite the Greek Alphabet. Perhaps the most impressive presentation is hearing their presentation on the four lobes of the cerebral cortex. Now, all these educational presentations are done in songs. That’s how innovative Audra was. Upon graduating college, she launched New Innovations, an educational consulting company that combines the latest in brain research with arts-integration, sensory experiences, music, movement, rhythm, innovative activities, acceleration techniques and study skills. She also taught in the Palm Beach County public school system simultaneously. Mrs. Mark created her own curriculum and her program encompasses elementary, middle and high schools. She has been the keynote speaker at the college and university levels. She has also developed programs to assist teachers in passing composition writing and general knowledge examinations. A devout Christian, Audra had a close

relationship with God. In fact, she authored several books. Among them, “The Bible, Anthropology, and the Ancient Caveman” as well as “The Bible, Paleontology, and the Antediluvians.” She also wrote “The Bible, Substance Abuse, and the Patriarchs,” with the subtitle, “Understanding the Correlation Between Substance Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and Signs of the Second Coming of Christ.” Mrs. Mark had a brilliant mind and a dear heart. The world has lost a true champion of learning. My prayer and sympathy go out to Audra’s family, students and colleagues.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

There’s No One Like You! It is good, in fact imperative, that you are aware of your limitations regarding certain challenges that confront you in daily life. That’s what enables you realistically to bid farewell to many things, and devote your full concentration on things you like, and are able to accomplish with integrity and distinction! The absence of certain abilities in any person only indicates the presence of other talents which shall enable you to perform well. The many things you might like to do, but can’t, that others perform far better, do not make you inferior to anyone; you simply have to discover and concentrate on your strengths, and give priority to the superior quality of what you can deliver!

In so acting, remember that you alone can bring top value to certain pursuits and performances where you also register your trade mark! Thus, find that unique place, and that specific task wherein to excel. As it has been stated before, “bloom where you are planted!” Avoid living by comparison with others, or by contrasting your life accomplishments with someone else. The Creator Himself has wisely distributed the talents He intended to provide, among all members of the human race – certain ones to some, and others to different individuals. That’s the reason why not everyone can do well in agriculture, or commerce, in teaching,

banking, or the health sciences. Some are musicians at a variety of levels, who could never do well in equally honorable skills and professions. And those who do remarkably well in their chosen spheres of activity, most often are not able to achieve the same high level in other areas. What is perennially needed are men and women fully convicted of what their unique contribution can be to society, who also seek to concentrate and excel therein; persons who are never satisfied with how far they’ve advanced up to this time but, rather, by how farther away they can yet advance, aiming at newer and greater levels of excellence! Discover and release those unique character-

istics you possess that offer some distinction to your accomplishments, and allow continual improvements to be manifested in your performance. Let others recognize your trademarks, and recommend their unique value to many others! Seek always to act purposefully, to deliver on time a product which never misses the mark, but consistently maintains its superior quality. As New Zealand-born author, Brian Houston, wisely observed, “When you’re living the full, abundant, wide-open life for which you were designed, everything you do will be characterized by passion, purpose, perspective, and peace.” Try to settle for no less, for there’s no one else like you!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Schools, Charity, Volunteers Deliver Some Kindness, A Warm Meal on Thanksgiving

Volunteers unload trucks delivering boxes of food and frozen turkeys for Boca Helping Hands annual Thanksgiving Day dinner program.

By CRA News Service

On a day when families across Boca Raton gathered together to give thanks for the blessings of the past year, hundreds of volunteers also gave of themselves at the largest Thanksgiving dinner in town. An army of volunteers spent the day at Boca Helping Hands making sure people didn’t go hungry over the holiday. “People want to do good,”James S. Gavrilos, executive director, Boca Helping Hands, said in an email. “And there is such a strong appeal to reach out on a day like Thanksgiving. In fact, we had both shifts filled by early August! Before we had even

hit September, we had more people requesting to volunteer than we had volunteer slots! We had whole families coming in to volunteer.” In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, volunteers assembled at the organization’s headquarters at 1500 N.W. 1st Court to unload, organize and distribute meals for people in need. They continued their efforts until Thanksgiving Day when they served a hot meal from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Later that day, volunteers also delivered meals to about 400 pre-registered families at the organization’s West Boca Pantry site, Gavrilos said.

American Heritage School - The students raised money and puchased food for to share with those in need. Yes-the bus was full!

For the past eight years, the nonprofit organization has opened its doors to the community to provide a traditional meal of turkey and all the trimmings. This year, more than 1,800 people signed up to receive a box of food and a frozen turkey, according to the organization’s website. That’s a 20 percent jump over last year, organizers said. “Thank you to everyone who made it possible for those in need to have a very Happy Thanksgiving,” read a message on the site. Organizers said they bought the turkeys thanks to a generous contribution from an anonymous donor. They also collected donations through the

Boca Helping Hands’ 2015 Thanksgiving Box Brigade where our donors were asked to provide 2,000 turkeys and fill boxes or baskets with a laundry list of non-perishable items. Several community organizations, schools and business pitched in. Students from Olympic Heights High School packed enough boxes of food to feed more than 350 families, according to a release from the school. For the past decade, the students and families have contributed canned food toward the Thanksgiving Box Brigade, school officials said. The effort started with the school’s National Honor Society, grew to include the Olympians Advanced Placement Academy, and last year expanded to the entire school. This year, though, is the largest. School officials said opportunities like these teach their pupils the importance of serving their community. And organizers are most thankful for the volunteers who gave of their treasure, talent and time. “Throughout the week, we had employees from Home Depot, members of the Junior League, football players from Saint John Paul II High School, and the Kabala Center of Boca Raton working hard preparing and serving,” Gavrilos said. “And the team who was there on Thanksgiving Day was simply incredible.”

help the needy kids of Boca Raton. Back in 2005, the Boca Raton Rotary Club Sunset was instrumental in raising money to help purchase an intricate merry-go-round. In celebration of Rotary’s 100th anniversary, the club decided to donate the carousel to the city’s Parks and Recreations Department where it was then placed at Sugar Sand Park. Because of the Rotary’s generosity, the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Parks District, which owns the play area, offered the club a chance to use the carousel one day a year free of charge. In 2007, Heizer proposed to use one of those days to host a toy drive. “No one was really using that carousel,” Heizer said. “I thought, ‘let’s use this to help kids during the holidays.’” Since the first Carousel Day, more and more people got involved. Boca Helping Hands

joined forces as well as supporters from the five other Rotary Clubs in Boca Raton, The Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, ACM Building Services, Image 360, The Boca Raton Green Market, Memories for Life, Worldwide Ticket Craft, and others. This year’s event is scheduled for Dec. 6 in Sugar Sand Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It offers families fun and free rides on the carousel as well as a special appearance from Santa Claus. Participants are urged to bring new, unwrapped toys that will be given to needy kids who may not otherwise receive any presents this holiday season. Since the first toy drive in 2006, over twenty thousand toys have been donated, last year alone; $16,000 in toy and cash donations were taken. This year they hope to raise over $20,000. “Our goal is to be the biggest toy drive in South County,” Heizer said. “We want to be bigger, we want to be able to give away more toys.”

Body of Boca Raton Man Pulled From Tallahassee Pond By CRA News Service

The body of a Boca Raton man who was a student at Florida State University was found in a pond near the campus Thanksgiving Day, according to the Leon County Sheriff ’s Office. Jorge Alexander Altuna, a 23-year-old senior who was expected to graduate soon, was reported missing since Nov. 23, one day after his family last been heard from him, authorities said. A passerby saw the body at Carter-Howell-Strong Park and alerted police. Altuna suffered from anxiety and depression, and his family was concerned for his safety before his death, according to a release from the Sheriff ’s Office. Investigators with the Sheriff ’s Office say there is no sign of foul play at this time, but the investigation is ongoing, LCSO spokesman Lt. Grady Jordan said. Altuna was last seen alive Nov. 22 after a Florida State University police officer stopped him for running a stop sign on

campus, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. Altuna, who had a history of traffic violations, fled the scene while officers were processing his passport, police Chief David Perry told the newspaper. Officers did not chase Altuna because they had his identifying information, Perry said. The department then issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of driving with a suspended license and fleeing and eluding police, the newspaper reported. Only one week earlier, on Nov. 16, a University police officer stopped Altuna after his driver’s side headlight was out. The officer arrested him for driving without a license as a habitual traffic offender, the newspaper reported. An autopsy has been done but officials are awaiting the results of toxicology screening to determine a cause of death, officials said. Anyone with any information is asked to call LCSO’s Violent Crimes Unit at 850606-3400 or Crime Stoppers at 850-5745477.

The food for the dinner was donated by Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and Saint Joan of Arc Church. In a high ranked city like Boca Raton, it is hard to believe that there are a lot of individuals with no food to eat, without clean clothes to wear, and sleeping in the concrete. By the beginning of 2013, there were over 2,500 individuals in Palm Beach County that were considered homeless. From students and business professionals, to

veterans and families, these individuals have ended up without a shelter for different reasons. It was during January of 2013 that John Runhaar started the Shower and Laundry program at First United Methodist Church. “They had a Tuesday night dinner to celebrate recovery which is a recovery program they have on Tuesdays and then some of the homeless, hearing that they there was a dinner, would come,” said Anne Cann, president and program coordinator of Love Boca Outreach Ministries. Cann came on board one month after the programs started. At Caring Kitchen in Delray, where Cann used to volunteer, hygiene kits were provided to people. She

brought up the concept to Runhaar and Skip Poulsen, director of Love Boca Outreach, in hope to do the same at LBOM. The mission of Love Boca Outreach Ministries is to bring acceptance, love and a sense of belonging to some of the most marginalized and broken people in the community by providing them with basic needs and services. “I believe that love, and giving love to people that felt really unloved or pushed aside, can bring miraculous changes,” said Cann. “Maybe they had given up, and then maybe they want to try more, to maybe reclaim the life that they have lost but some people might never change their lives and we are still just going to just love them as they are, forever.” Cann hopes that one day LBOM would be able to provide greater services like housing, and build a day center where people could come in and have access to showers, clothes, food and water. “Just by how you present yourself to the community you are treated differently,” said Cann about the importance of providing the homeless with new and clean clothes. “So instead of people not looking at you, if you present yourself with clean hygiene and clean clothes, nobody is going to know and then you are also going to be treated differently and that goes a long way.” Love Boca Outreach Ministries has become a family for those who had nothing. “So maybe we don’t dramatically change with the material part of their life, but we do dramatically change how they feel about themselves,” said Cann. “We really bring about, maybe to other people not quantifiable changes, but I just see it in the people,” continued Cann. “I mean we hug each other, we laugh, we joke, we just have like a family type atmosphere where no one is judged no matter what they’re struggling with.”

LBOM is in need of donations in order to provide the homeless with basic needs. Donations for the organization can be done at the First United Methodist Church office, on their website, their Go Fund Me site, or by contacting Cann. “We just received our first gram, which was really exciting,” expressed Cann. “We are building something that changes the landscape of our community, and also changes people’s perceptions of homelessness, because there are some beautiful people, the most generous and kind people,” continued Cann, explaining the special movement of the organization. At Love Boca Outreach, even those who don’t have much share the little they have with others, they respect and care for each other. “I can give a man two shirts and I would see him pass on one of them to someone else in need. There is something beautiful here,” affirms Cann. “I see people that might look scary from the outside but when you get to know them they are just sweet gentle souls that have gone through tremendous trauma in life and really want someone to just love them as they are.” As the holidays approaches, the organization is looking to collect gift cards to McDonald’s, Walgreens, Publix, Dunkin’ Donuts, or any other place that serves food so that those with no money for food could have at least a $5 gift card to get breakfast, lunch, or dinner in any of these places located all around Boca. “We really take anything, we always have great needs for shoes and clothing, and on our website there’s a list of immediate needs as well.” For donations and more information visit www.lbom.org

Gigi Vela’s Birthday At Wright by the Sea

Philanthropists of the Year Party Helene and her husband Steven Weicholz were honored as Philanthropists of the year at the beautiful Signature Grand restaurant in Davie, Fl. on Wednesday. These two amazing people give generously to many charities including Joe Damaggio Childrens Hospital, Jafco, and have recently donated to help build a bomb shelter in the Gaza strip to protect Israel. A crowd of over 650 people came out to honor several people who donate generously of their time and money to many organizations.

I attended a birthday celebration at the Wright by the Sea Inn in Delray Beach for Gigi Vela. There were three beautiful lighted tents set up on the grounds of this well kept inn with a beautiful oceanfront. Several friiends I had met previously were in attendance from the University Club of FAU. One tent was set up for food and drinks another for seating the large crowd and a third with a d.j. for dancing. A chef made huge pans of two different paella’s, seafood and chicken and pork. Very delicious food. Thank you Gigi for the great time.

Luxury Chamber of Commerce Party at Meatball Room On Monday evening I attended the Luxury Chamber of Commerce event at the Meatball room in Boca Raton where the guest speaker was Khalilah Ali, former wife of fighter, Mohammed Ali. About 35 guests enjoyed delicious appetizers of meatballs, calamari and prosciutto and salami and drinks. Khalilah was just the most interesting charming woman who told jokes and had a fantastic personality. She has written a book as well. Thank you to Jay Shapiro and Barry Epstein who put on these monthly fun events at different venues.

A Dinosaur King Picture “The Lion King” taking place in the Dinosaur Age and you get the gist of “The Good Dinosaur.” This is a sweet fable about bravery from Disney Pixar Studios, directed by Peter Sohn (“Monsters University,” “The Incredibles”) with screenplay by Meg LeFaure, who gave us the lovely “Inside Out.” The story begins 65 million years ago, with an asteroid barreling toward Earth. Instead of striking Earth, which in theory exterminated the dinosaurs, the asteroid sails past Earth and life goes on. We move a few million years later to meet a family of Apatosaurus. Poppa (voice of Jeffrey Wright) and Momma (Frances McDormand) await the hatching of three eggs. Young Libby (Maleah Nipay-Padilla) hatches first out of the smallest egg. Next comes Young Buck (Ryan Teeple) a rambunctious male. Finally out of the largest egg hatches the tiniest Apatosaurus, named Arlo (Jack McGraw as a juvenile, Raymond Ochoa as an adolescent). Arlo is the smallest, weakest and most fearful of the three siblings. In this prehistoric fantasy, dinosaurs till the soil, plant corn and store it in a silo from marauding “critters.”

Karen Burke and her friend Richard with Khalilah

Poppa is convinced Arlo has the right stuff, so he takes him on a mission to teach him courage. As in “Lion King” the father figure perishes, in this cause during a flood, leaving the son alone, lost and afraid. So begins a picaresque journey in which Arlo meets all manner of prehistoric creatures, some cute and cuddly, some funny, and some terrifying. The “critter” who had been raiding Arlo’s family farm is a humanoid who thinks he’s a wolf. Originally an adversary, Spot, as Arlo calls him, becomes his best friend and helps him find his way back home. The animation is so sharp and beautiful it is hard to tell if some of the backdrop scenery isn’t real. The various creatures are voiced by an A-list cast that includes deepvoiced Sam Elliott as the alpha T-Rex Buck; Jack Bright as the mostly howling voice of Spot, Steve Zahn as Thunderclap and John Ratzenberger as Earl. The optimistic message of “The Good Dinosaur” is that even a runty, puny individual can rise up and find his courage. I can agree with that. I was the “runt of the litter” in my family. Rating: 

Serving A Vendor With A Helpful Rebuke Have you ever thought about the importance of constructive criticism, or a timely rebuke? Several years ago, a printer we had been using for some time delivered a project to my office that was intended to represent our organization visually to thousands of people. Upon reviewing the work, however, the colors failed to match what we had requested. They were not even close to our instructions. My tendency is to lean toward being a people-pleaser, so I struggled concerning what I should to do. “I don’t want to sound like a complainer,” I reasoned. “Maybe the colors are not that far off, and we can overlook the fact they are not an exact match.” My assistant at the time, however, did not share my struggle with being unwilling to hurt someone’s feelings. She knew what needed to be done.

“We can’t send this out looking like this,” she asserted. “They will have to do the job again.” My assistant was right, of course. We had painstakingly chosen the colors for representing our organization and had accurately specified what we needed. And we were not doing the printer any favors by accepting substandard work. Rather than being concerned about offending the printing company, it was important for them to know when their services were not meeting expectations. Otherwise, how could they realize the need for taking corrective measures to ensure the quality of future work? Rather than taking offense, the printer appreciated being informed of the error and was quick to respond. The next day we received our project – it had been redone, looking much better. I was glad my assistant

had the determination to hold the company, and me, accountable. Looking back on this situation, I realize I had forgotten some important biblical principles that apply to the value of providing correction when needed, whether for a vendor, an employee or even a customer: The gift of a rebuke. Telling someone, whether a fellow staff member, friend or supplier, that their work is not acceptable can be an act of kindness if done in the right spirit, intended not to demean but to help them in doing better in the future. “Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” (Proverbs 25:12). The obligation of a rebuke. If you find someone performing substandard work and fail to bring it to their attention, in effect you are participating in, even condoning

their failure. “Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt” (Leviticus 19:17). The benefit of a rebuke. Many times it may seem hard to offer words of correction and rebuke, but if these help the individuals become more effective and productive in their work, the end result might be gratitude for our willingness to provide the constructive criticism. “He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue”(Proverbs 28:23). Rebuking a vendor in love – caring enough about that person, or company, to make them aware of falling short of your expectations – can result in affirming your own commitment to excellence, as well as theirs.

Boy, 15, in Fatal Boca Car Chase Charged as Adult

The 15-year-old whom police say was driving a stolen car when it crashed into another motorist and killed her Nov. 1 has been charged as an adult, according to the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office. Wesley Brown of Deerfield Beach was charged Nov. 20 with vehicular homicide, fleeing or attempting to elude a marked police car and driving without a valid driver’s license. He was being held in juvenile custody since the crash. Police say the 2016 Ford Mustang Brown was driving was reported stolen from a va-

The commercial music program within FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters recently hosted the Miklós Rózsa Film Scoring Competition, presenting awards in the form of scholarships. Two scenes were posted for all composers to score in the competition, which was only open to FAU undergraduate commercial music majors with a GPA of 3.0. The commercial music faculty committee selected Luis Castillo as the first place winner,, the second place winner was Paul Zambrano and third place went to David Dean. The first-place prize of $500 was donated

by the Cosmos and Chronos Foundation. Lewis Greenberg, adjunct professor of visual arts and art history at FAU, is president of the foundation. A life-long film music collector and historian, Greenberg said he particularly admires the work of Miklós Rózsa. The second prize of $200 was from an anonymous donor, and the third prize of $100 was from Gail Vorsas, whose undergraduate degree is in film scoring. An aficionado of film music, particularly of the era of Rózsa, she was happy to have the opportunity to support the awards for FAU’s Commercial Music Program.

let attendant at the Addison Events Center. Two men went up to a valet, one pointed a gun at him, took his cellphone and the keys to the car and drove off, police said. Hours later, investigators tracked the phone to Deerfield Beach, where Broward County sheriff ’s deputies found it, but no suspects. At about 11 p.m., police spotted the Mustang in the 1400 block of Northwest Second Avenue, north of Glades Road and tried to stop the driver. Brown took off speeding south on Northwest Second Avenue and crashed into Harris-Aceves’ silver Honda Pilot at the intersection with Palmetto Park Road near City Hall. She died at the scene, investigators said. It was not clear if there was a pursuit before the crash. According to court records, Brown had stolen other cars three times this year before the Nov. 1 crash. His rap sheet also includes nine arrests between Oct. 31, 2012 and Aug. 14, 2015, He was placed on probation in October 2014 for numerous convictions, including marijuana possession, battery and trespassing, according to official court documents. Jacquan Strowbridge, 20, the passenger in the Mustang, ran from the scene. Police quickly caught him. Investigators have not charged Strowbridge. However, he remains a person of interest in the case, police said. Strowbridge, who has a checkered past dating back to 2011, is on probation after being released from prison in July for kidnapping and armed robbery, records show.

Broward Pain and Wellness treatment protocol has helped relieve thousands of patients like these with nerve pain....

may be able to help!

Many people in America are affected by peripheral neuropathy. Its symptoms include persistent and often unbearable pain in the legs, feet and/or forearms and hands. Those with the condition sometimes experience sensations ranging from numbness, burning or tingling to cramps or shooting pain from damage to small sensory nerves. These sensations may affect one’s balance, their ability to sleep, walk or drive.

Do you suffer from peripheral neuropathy pain?

Even if you’ve resigned yourself to a lifetime of pain. Even if you’ve been told that you just need to learn to live with the daily agony —consider scheduling Broward Pain and Wellness is currently introducing a non-surgical and painless your comprehensive neuropathy evaluation at multi-pronged protocol in South Florida. The results using this same protocol Broward Pain and Wellness. thus far are quite promising. By combining Low Level Light Treatment (LLLT) with neuro-rehabilitative therapies, our protocol has brought relief to many long-suffering patients who have endured the anguish of severe chronic pain—including pain caused by neuropathy and Type II diabetes.

Help may just be around the corner! www.bocaratontribune.com

“After going through chemotherapy, I began to experience severe shooting and stabbing pain and numbness in my feet and legs. My oncologist recommended a medication but unfortunately, it put me to sleep. After 10 treatments over the course of a month at the clinic, I am sleeping great and have plenty of energy. Thanks, I can enjoy life pain free and drug free.” -----Teresa, Real Estate Professional

“On a scale of 10 my pain was a nine…” “I couldn’t even walk because the pain was too much. The doctors said there was nothing they can do because I’m a diabetic and the surgery wouldn’t help my foot. Initially, I tried everything else from creams, needles, to TENS machines and nothing helped. The only thing that worked was the treatment and I’m 95% pain-free now…” — Arthur, Self-Employed

The list of accolades for the Cologne, Germany, native continues to grow this season as Hellmann’s first team All-South Region honor is added to Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, SSC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-SSC recognition. Hellmann tallied 17 goals, 13 assists and 47 points in leading the league and region in both goals and points. The junior forward tallied at least one point in 13 of the 15 games this year, logged three multi-goal games, including two hat tricks, and recorded four multi-assist outings. Fort Lauderdale Strikers Name Caio Zanardi New Head Coach, Begin Investing on Soccer Operations

By: Pedro Heizer One week after letting go of head coach Gunter Kronsteiner, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers have found his replacement. Caio Zanardi, who is currently the team’s general manager, has been appointed the newest head coach of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. “Caio’s experience on the sidelines is decades long, spans three continents and includes stints with some of the world’s top

teams, players and coaches,” said Strikers CEO Sean Guerin. “We have made the postseason four of the last five years, yet a championship has eluded us. We believe Caio is perfectly suited to lead us to a title and implement the systems that will make the Strikers a sustained winner.” When Zanardi joined the Strikers back in July, he was just the general manager, but now he will also have the heavy task of guiding the team in the ultimate goal, a

NASL Championship. Zanardi was integral in guiding the Strikers to the NASL Championship Semifinals after the chaos left at the end of the Spring Season. “I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, and I’m excited to implement my philosophies as head coach,” said Zanardi. “I have high expectations for this club. We are assembling a talented soccer department and our goal is to produce a winning team that represents our community and fans. I’m eager to get started.” According to league sources, the Strikers are poised to set the highest-ever budget for its soccer operations, which means everything from players to stadium renovations. As part of the newfound importance for soccer operations, according to sources the Strikers will also be putting a team together to play in the fourth division of US Soccer in the National Premier Soccer League starting in 2016. The team has yet to confirm this, but the NPSL has a league meeting in San Diego this weekend where according to an NPSL source the league will announce the Strikers U23 team. The Strikers U23’s will join the Sunshine Conference. Despite a new team on the horizon, ac-

cording to NASL sources the Strikers will unfortunately lose its NASL MVP and Golden Boot Winner, Stefano Pinho to another team within the NASL despite being offered one of the highest salaries in the history of the modern day Strikers. However, in the face of a key loss like Pinho, the club is poised to make big splashes this offseason with key players in each position. One of these key players is goalkeeper Bruno Cardoso, who currently plays for Brazilian side Santa Cruz, who has recently been promoted to the Brazilian Serie A. The club has not yet confirmed the move. The club will begin announcing new players and coaching staff throughout the month as they prepare for the Florida Cup in January. These key players, according to a source, are international players with National Team experience, and rumors around Brazil is that Ronaldinho is one of the names being thrown in the hat. Aside from big-name signings that will be announced before January, league sources have confirmed the Strikers will indeed resign PC, one of the fan-favorites last season, Manny Gonzalez, David Neves, and has a contract offer out to Haitian National James Marcelin.
