Community 9th Annual Boca Raton Toy Drive Brings Community Together During Holiday Season
“Having all the Boca Raton Rotary Clubs working together like this is just fantastic,” said Phil Lusting, Past District Governor and one of the Event Coordinators of the Toy Drive. “This is, without a doubt, the biggest Rotary event in Boca,” says Neil Haynie, member of The Rotary Club Boca Raton Central. “Sure, each club has their own important events and fundraisers, but this event has unified all the Rotary Clubs in Boca Raton for the past eight years and it continues to grow.” On Sunday, over 500 toys, and nearly $2,000
in cash was collected at the event. The toys will be distributed between The Wayne Barton Study Center, and Boca Helping Hands this holiday season for the needy kids in the city. The event is quickly becoming one of the mostinvolved events in the City. The Mayor of Boca Raton, Susan Haynie, once again was at the event where she gave each Rotary Club a proclamation for their amazing work to support the needy kids of Boca Raton during the Holiday Season. Alongside Mayor Haynie, Deputy Mayor
Robert Weinroth, and councilmember Scott Singer were in attendance and donated toys. Over 10 offices stepped up this season to have a box at their office to collect toys, and The Boca Raton Regional Hospital collected toys during their Christmas Party to donate to the event. “This event is one of the most important events of the year,” said radiologist Emmanuel Decius, who came to the event representing Boca Raton Regional Hospital with over 30 toys. “This is what the holiday season is all about, helping those in need.” The Boca Raton Toy Drive is still accepting toy donations to give Boca Helping Hands and Wayne Barton Study Center, if interested, please visit them on facebook: www.facebook.com/ bocatoydrive.

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things On Sunday night, millions of people watched as CNN recognized its 2015 Hero of the Year at a star studded pre-taped event in New York City. The winner was selected by viewer votes from 10 finalists – all with inspiring stories. Coincidentally, less than 24 hours earlier, about 120 people attended a function at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach where 10 of Palm Beach County’s community servants were recognized as Community Giants. Like the CNN tribute show, the Riviera Beach-based Inner City Youth Golfers’ Inc., (the brainchild of Malachi and Esmeralda H. “Essie” Knowles) honored these everyday people who are making life easier for others in the county. Although Saturday night’s gathering was far less low keyed, the impact of all 20 honorees’ work was equally powerful. In a time when people around us are selfish and are acting crazy, it was so heartwarming to see and hear the stories of 20 humans who are doing good things in their communities. Among the honorees was Dr. Emma Banks, the long-time Palm Beach County educator who converted a district-run public school to a charter school in 2003. She works tire-
lessly to give at-risk students the tools to be successful in classroom and in all areas of their lives. Dr. Banks has taken some unconventional approaches to learning. For example, to boost reading scores, she required parents to attend Saturday school. On the esteemed list was Roy Foster, a 2009 CNN Hero and Army veteran who advocates for the homeless. He founded Faith, Hope, Love, Charity Inc. in Lake Worth for homeless male veterans and Village of Valor, a $26 million apartment complex designed to help homeless veterans secure employment and a permanent home. The West Palm Beach complex is expected to open in 2016 and will have 140 apartments and townhomes, as well as a coffee shop, dining room, library, playground, pool and park. Foster also was instrumental in launching a criminal court for veterans to help them resolve problems that may have played a role in their criminal activity.
Other honorees included Houston Tate, the director of Palm Beach County’s Office of Community Revitalization, Dr. Beverlyann Barton, a former district area superintendent who mentored several principals and retired in 2006, and Robert E. Gonstead, a Singer Island resident who is passionate about preserving the beaches. Lockheed Martin and Florida Power & Light were also lauded for their support in the community. The stories of two of the honorees stood out: Ben Klug, the Indian Creek resident who epitomizes community servant. As president of his homeowners association for 10 years, he has labored for his neighbors. He has cleaned up their trash, painted walls, laid mulch, planted trees and flowers, mowed grass, trimmed back trees and edged their sidewalks. Because, in part, of his community spirit, he was the logical choice to fill a vacant seat on the town council after a member resigned in June. As I listened to his
story, I kept hoping that this good-hearted public servant will continue to be ethical and do the right thing and not get caught up in the potential abyss of corruption that was the fate of so many public officials in Palm Beach County. If there was an Unsung Hero award, it would have gone to Annetta Jenkins, the director of Neighborhood Services for the Riviera Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. Under her leadership, some areas in the city got a badly needed facelift and pride among the residents was restored. For example, Riviera Beach Heights, the oldest neighborhood in the city, got a $1.1 million infrastructure project, which include a community garden park, a linear park and health trail, as well as new sidewalks and lighting. Thanks largely to Jenkins vision, they were able to beautify, increase walkability and made it safer for people, in particular senior citizens, to walk around in their neighborhood. Interestingly, this project has since become a catalyst for other revitalization projects in the city, thus improving the quality of life. I was honored to share the evening with the Heroes and to learn about their stories and their work in Palm Beach County.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Alleviating Human Need! Whenever confronted with human need, you should not necessarily ponder “why” but, instead, consider the “what” and “how.” It’s not necessary to inquire about causes of what is so obvious to you; just acknowledge the urgency, determine what can be done to alleviate it, and solve that condition, utilizing the pathways leading to concrete action! Throughout all hours of any day, just by keeping your eyes fully open and attentive to what’s around, you shall quickly recognize many who are “weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care.” Your immediate challenge is to determine what needs to occur and how it can be accomplished. “When other helpers fail, and comforts flee”
in the experience of others, fellow humans can be proactive and function as divine agents, offering hope through tangible acts of service. Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, pondered correctly when, looking at society he exclaimed: “If there are only two men, the other man is my neighbor; if there are millions, each one of these is my neighbor.” Professor Charles F. Kemp reminds his readers that “throughout the long history of the church there has always been kept alive the biblical spirit of compassion and concern. For generations the church was almost the only agency that demonstrated any extensive practical concern.” Indeed, most major as-
sistance projects in the world have Christian origins! As new eras emerge, old needs remain, begging for sound solutions. And where urgencies speak louder, no one should remain silent nor inactive! “The practical effect of a belief is the real test of its soundness,” as someone eloquently put it! It’s never expected that a single individual can do everything; yet it’s possible for an entire community to join hearts and hands together, and give heed to pressing conditions which can be concretely addressed. At the same time, they can also carve emergency routes to lead them faster to the centers of need.
Caring for the needy can never stop. The resources are available and the mandate for doing good remains in force! This takes varied shapes on account of manifold types of destitution everywhere, but the challenge persists unaltered! When weeping with another who’s facing trials, more than likely you’ll bring a smile to that heart, while keeping another on your own face. There is joy in service, whatever its nature, anywhere, affecting anybody! Be attentive to needs around you, and willing to do your part, however small!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. Raymond Lee Jewelers Proves Rain No Match for Its Holiday Party Sparkling Success
Despite the chilly downpour outside, Raymond Lee Jewelers’ Holiday Party inside was far from a rain out Thursday night as a steady stream of Beemers and Bentleys poured in for a sparkling evening of fun, champagne and prizes. Rain was no match for the glittering Raymond Lee Jewelers’ flashy and successful VIP Holiday celebration where owners, Jeff & Lee Josephson, their families, their longtime staff and a beautiful model wearing a sparkly hoop petticoat flowing with glasses of Champagne greeted guests. The strolling Ms. Champagne added an
elegant touch to start the evening off with a tall glass of refreshment upon arrival, and then each guest received a voting card for beautiful designs by local florists. Once guests handed in their voting card, they were invited to “spin the wheel” for a prize. “Everyone is a winner,” announced Jeff Josephson as guests won various services such as free watch battery, ring resize, gift cards and more. Complimentary drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres were flowing freely and generously throughout the party and DJ Jeffrey Michaels had several women dancing outside the festively decorated storefront. Customers were pointing out beautiful necklaces, watches, earrings and started their holiday shopping. One guest even mentioned that they mistakenly came to the VIP Holiday Party thinking it was another party they were supposed to be attending but opted to stay because they were enjoying themselves so much. Fabulous prize baskets valued at over $1500 were raffled. The money raised from the raffle tickets went toward a charity dedicated to the wellbeing of animals called Charity Champions. “We were grateful to be part of the Raymond Lee Jewelers holiday celebration as we mixed and mingled with people who love animals as much as we do,” said Julia Josephson, board member founder and president of Charity Champions. Winner for the best florist went to FHJ. “It was wonderful to have floral arrangements complementing our fine jewelry so nicely,” said owner Lee Josephson.
Temporary Park at Wildflower Property Not Worth The Investment In October, the Boca Raton City Council told its staff to look at the cost of opening up a temporary park at the Wildflower site for short-term use. Earlier this week, the Council rejected the idea of the park, citing the cost, which according to the Sun-Sentinel is estimated to be $313,500, as one of the main reasons. The Boca Raton Tribune ran a survey regarding the Wildflower property in November in which locals were asked their opinion on what the city should do with the Wildflower property and it showed that 21.96% of the participants agree it should be leased to an outside company to build a restaurant, 60.28% voted for a park to be built, and 17.76% voted “other” specifying their proposals and ideas in the comments. The council did however, instruct its staff to move forward with the permitting process for installing a floating dock at the site, an estimate that can range from $215,000 to www.bocaratontribune.com
$350,000. In the survey conducted by The Boca Raton Tribune, many of the readers voiced their opinions regarding opening up a park. “Incorporate a park that can be altered to fit restaurants, food trucks and public activities,” said Isabel, a participant of the survey. “Prime locations don’t just benefit the city, developers, architects, but presents an opportunity to activate the urban fabric of Boca Raton to manifest a true identity of culture for optimal quality of pedestrian interaction.” However, Building up the Houston’s restaurant in the property means the city would earn back the $7.5 million that has been spent on the development of the property. Changing the deal, making a park instead of a restaurant, would not help the city to produce enough money to cover the investments. December 11 - 17, 2015

Hoverboards are literally and figuratively the hottest holiday gift on sale this Christmas. And safety experts are warning shoppers to do some research before buying them. That’s because the popular two-wheeled self-balancing scooters are unexpectedly bursting into flames. “Some of the units are not safe,” said Boca Raton Fire Rescue assistant chief Mike Lasalle. “Be careful what you purchase.” Lasalle urged parents to make sure the toys are UL approved before buying them for their children. At least three of the gadgets - which are actually on every kid’s wish list this year - have been the cause of fire in as many weeks, according to news reports. On Saturday, Nov. 28, an 11-year-old Boca Raton girl was riding the gadget when she felt it become hot under her feet, Pamela Levine said of her daughter. The child immediately hopped off and that’s when the toy “crackled, popped, burst into flames,” Levine told WPTV CH-5. “She felt it get hot, she jumped off, and it was in flames,” Levine said. The first incident occurred Nov. 21 when, another hoverboard exploded in New Orleans. Jessica Horne said the fire almost burned her house down after her 12-year-old son had the hoverboard for just one day. “Both wheels - It was like fireworks. I could see sparks just flying,” she told WGNO TV. “And before I could yell ‘the house is on fire,’ the middle part of the board that was going between your feet - just ‘poof.’ Into flames.” Horne bought the “Fit Turbo” version of

the device, according to the report. The latest fire occurred Nov. 29 when a hoverboard burst into flames in Gulf Shores, Alabama, just three days after it arrived at its owner’s house, according to news reports. “I came outside turned it on, came down the sidewalk not even a 100 feet, and it exploded,” Tim Cade told WKRG TV. “Batteries started shooting out of it; you would not expect a fire like that to come out of a little thing like that. I was not expecting something like that.” British authorities recently seized more than 15,000 hoverboards at ports and airports as a safety measure after fire officials responded to fires caused by the rollerboards, CNBC reported. And since Oct. 15, the U.K. Trading Standards, Britain’s equivalent to the Federal Trade Commission, inspected more than 17,000 hoverboards and seized 88 percent over fears they could explode or catch fire, according to the news station. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission officials cautioned buyers against leaving hoverboards unattended while charging their batteries. Some of the electric vehicles allow users to steer them using their feet and can go up to 10 mph. They currently retails anywhere from about $200 to about $2,000. Boca Raton’s Levine bought the hoverboard on Amazon but was not able to discover who manufactured the product. The incidents have caught the attention of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “We are looking at the entire product line,” Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, told The Advocate newspaper in Alabama. The CPSC said consumers should report any product safety issues.
The likelihood of Office Depot leaving Boca Raton is looking slimmer as the Federal Trade Commission filed suit earlier this week to block a planned $6.3 billion merger with giant Staples. “The Commission has reason to believe that the proposed merger between Staples and Office Depot is likely to eliminate beneficial competition that large companies rely on to reduce the costs of office supplies,” FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said in a statement. “The FTC’s complaint alleges that Staples and Office Depot are often the top two bidders for large business customers.” The merger would lead to higher prices and reduced quality, the complaint alleged in the administrative suit filed on Monday. The anti-competition watchdog also asserted that entry or expansion into the market by other office supplies vendors, manufacturers, wholesalers, or online retailers would not be timely, likely, or sufficient to counteract the anticompetitive effects of the merger. Further the purported efficien-

cies would not offset the likely competitive harm. If the merger is approved, hundreds of jobs in Palm Beach County would be lost. Last year, the city, county, and state struck a $5 million incentives deal with Office Depot to bring and keep jobs in the area over the next five years. If Office Depot, which has roughly 2,000 employees in Boca Raton, it has to pay back that money. Staples based in Framingham, Mass., is the world’s largest seller of office products and services. Both companies are each other’s closest competitors in the sale of items such as pens, sticky notes, copy paper and paper clips, and are often the top two bidders for the business of large companies, the regulator said in the suit. Both companies said they would pursue legal options to complete the merger. The two companies announced plans to combine in February in a deal that was expected to be closely scrutinized by regulators concerned with antitrust issues. The FTC previously blocked plans by the two to merge in 1997.

“Moby-Dick” The Rest of the Story

Boca Ballet’s Nutcracker And Holiday Party I attend the Boca Ballet Theater’s Nutcracker holiday show at the Olympic Heights H.S. last nite along with my husband Bob. Dan Guin and Jane Tyree did an excellent professional job on the show. Marleen Forkas was the sponsor of the show and had a small part playing the Grande Dame. An afterparty was held at J. Alexanders after the show.

Before “Moby-Dick” there was a real giant white whale that menaced and wrecked an American whaling ship. “In The Heart of the Sea” is the back story of Herman Melville’s epic whaling novel. Ron Howard directs the sprawling adventure, written by Charles Levitt (“Blood Diamond”) and based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s historical book “In the Heart of the Ocean: The tragedy of the Whaleship Essex.” The story begins in 1850 with a young Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) trying to convince a reluctant Tom Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson) to be interviewed as research Melville was doing for a novel based on the Essex disaster of 1820, thousands of miles off the coast of South America in the Pacific Ocean. Nickerson, who was just a cabin boy on the Essex, is the last living survivor. His wife (Michelle Fairley) gently but firmly convinces her husband to tell his horrific tale. In this telling, the mission was flawed from the beginning. Owen Chase (Chris Hems-
worth) had been promised the post of Captain of the Essex, bound from Nantucket, Mass. Instead the post was given to the callow, inexperienced George Pollard (Benjamin Walker), whose father was an investor in the whaling company. Chase grudgingly accepted the second-in-command rank of First Mate. Pollard had come from a long line of Nantucket whalers. Owen Chase was the son of a farmer and was looked down upon as a landlubber. In reality Chase was a far superior sailor than Pollard, whose bad choices led to the destruction of the Essex, marooning its survivors in three lifeboats more than 1,000 miles from any land. Mean will do desperate, terrible things to survive. No wonder Nickerson did not want to talk. He was ashamed. The Melville novel is more about the madness of Captain Ahab than of his unfortunate crew. As a lover of the original novel and the classic 1956 John Houston movie that followed, I found “Heart of the Sea” fascinating. The computer-generated special effects are sometimes a bit fakey, but the acting is true, led by stalwart Chris Hemsworth, who lost 33 pounds in four weeks to depict his gaunt survivor. As for Melville, who idolized author Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne himself complimented Melville for creating “the great American epic.” Rating: 1/2

Helping Each Other Survive for Another Day Speaking at a commencement ceremony at the University of Texas in 2014, Naval Admiral William H. McRaven, ninth commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, talked about crucial lessons he learned during basic training for Navy SEALS. One particularly powerful lesson was impressed on him when he and other SEAL prospects were faced with 15 hours of “fighting the freezing cold, mud, the howling wind and pressure from the instructors to quit.” This almost unimaginable challenge came at the conclusion of what was called “hell week,” after six days of no sleep, constant physical and mental harassment. This makeor-break exercise was conducted at the Mud Flats, an area between San Diego, Calif., U.S.A. and Tijuana, Mexico, a swampy patch of terrain where the mud will engulf
anyone in it. With eight hours remaining to swim in the cold mud, some men were ready to quit, McRaven said. Hopelessness was settling in. Then unexpectedly, one brave man began singing. Soon, one by one, others joined in the singing, and “somehow the mud seemed warmer and the wind tamer,” according to the admiral. As a result, the SEAL trainees survived the night. The singing was off-key but enthusiastic, he said. What it provided was hope, a necessary element for surviving any harsh trial. “If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world, it is the power of hope,” McRaven stated. “The power of one person – Washington, Lincoln, Mandela, and even a young girl from Pakistan, Malala – one person can change the world by giving people hope.”
Few of us in the 21st century marketplace will ever experience the intensive survival training of military Special Forces, but sometimes enduring the stresses of a workday can seem more demanding than we could have ever imagined. At times like that, we desperately need one another, singing or not. The Bible recognizes daily living – on the job and at home – can push us to our physical, mental and emotional limits. It offers principles for surviving demands that seem beyond our capacity to endure: We are there for one another. When we work together as a team, committed to the same goals and objectives, we can provide strength and encouragement for one another when needed. “We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with
everyone” (1 Thessalonians 5:14). We can help in supplying each other with motivation and inspiration. Emotions go up and down during difficult times. Members of a well-functioning team that are strong can support those feeling weak. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess., for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:23-24). We can keep one another focused on the ultimate goal. When hope is failing, it helps to remind ourselves of the reward that lies ahead. “Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Until next week!

Boca Raton Native Tapped to Perform National Anthem at Boca Bowl
As ‘fans in the stands’ gather, the competing college football teams get ready for kick-off and the full-field flag unfurls in FAU Stadium on Tuesday, December 22 for the ESPN nationally televised 2015 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl, 22-year-old Boca native resident and senior at Lynn University Kendra Erika will perform the national anthem. Erika is a classically trained artist who is proficient in all genres – from Jazz and Broadway to Pop – with a vast repertoire of cover songs that appeal to a variety of audiences. Also a singer/songwriter, she
People with Disabilities. “We are pleased to have such a talented and impassioned resident representative of Boca Raton to perform at our 2105 bowl game,” reported Doug Mosley, executive director of the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl. “When we heard Kendra’s talent open this year’s Boca Raton Mayors Ball, we knew immediately we wanted her to open this year’s Marmot Boca Raton Bowl. The fact that Kendra was born and grew up in the bowl’s home city, only made our choice an even more sound one.” Dubbed ‘Boca’s Biggest Annual Outdoor Party’, the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl is the newest Boca holiday-timed tradition as a nationally televised spotlight shines brightly on Boca Raton and Palm Beach County. The postseason college football bowl game annually matches up the Mid-American Conference (MAC), Conference USA and American Athletic Conference (AAC); this year’s game features the MAC versus the AAC. The postseason collegiate football bowl game first ‘touched down’ in 2014 and aired live on ESPN throughout the U.S. as well as international affiliates in South America, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe. The game received a 1.5 U.S. household rating, generating more than 2.5 million viewers who saw promotional commercials on both
Boca Raton and Palm Beach County. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission conservatively estimated the event resulted in a direct local economic impact of over $4 million, generated more than 4,000 hotel room rentals in Palm Beach County with more than 8,000 out-of-state visitors. Each year, the bowl will bring about 500 studentathletes, coaches, administrators and support staff to visit Boca Raton and draw thousands of alumni and fans from the two participating schools. Mosley continued to share that the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl — one of 42 bowl games and the only one in Palm Beach County – will feature “all the traditional pomp and circumstance that makes this a genuinely fun, entertaining experience for both college football fans and non-fans alike.” To purchase tickets for sideline ($47), end zone ($27) or groups, visit http:// espnevents.com/boca-raton-bowl/tickets/, e-mail tickets@thebocabowl.com or call the ticket office at 561-362-3650.

“After going through chemotherapy, I began to experience severe shooting and stabbing pain and numbness in my feet and legs. My oncologist recommended a medication but unfortunately, it put me to sleep. After 10 treatments over the course of a month at the clinic, I am sleeping great and have plenty of energy. Thanks, I can enjoy life pain free and drug free.” -----Teresa, Real Estate Professional
“On a scale of 10 my pain was a nine…” “I couldn’t even walk because the pain was too much. The doctors said there was nothing they can do because I’m a diabetic and the surgery wouldn’t help my foot. Initially, I tried everything else from creams, needles, to TENS machines and nothing helped. The only thing that worked was the treatment and I’m 95% pain-free now…” — Arthur, Self-Employed

Three FAU Football Players Named First Team All C-USA
Florida Atlantic University football saw three players earn first team All-Conference USA honors while a total of 14 individual awards were awarded to the Owls on Tuesday. Trevon Coley, who was named the team’s MVP on Sunday, was the lone senior named to the first team. Juniors Trey Hendrickson, who earned the Owls’ Bone Award, and Dalton Schomp, the team’s Special Teams MVP, joined Coley on the first team. “Having 12 players earn Conference USA recognition is just another sign of where our program is going,” said Head Coach Charlie Partridge. “Three of the senior captains were honored and this program is grateful to them for the culture they have helped to cre-
ate. The future lies with the remaining nine honorees and where they will be able to take this program.” Coley, a defensive tackle, served as a team captain and was instrumental on a defensive line that set the program’s all-time singleseason sack record with 35. The Owls sat atop the league in sacks and were ranked No. 13 nationally. Hendrickson, a defensive end, set FAU’s all-time single-season sack record at 13.5 and holds the program’s alltime career sacks record at 20, with a year to play. He led the league in sacks at the end of the 2015 regular season and was ranked No. 2 nationally following regular season play. Schomp led the nation with a punt average
of 48.0 yards per punt. He tallied 22 punts of 50 yards or more and saw opponents return just 16 of his punts, an average of 7.2 yards per return. His longest was 76 yards. Second team featured offensive lineman Reggie Bain, a sophomore, and senior corner Cre’von Leblanc, who earned FAU’s defensive MVP honors earlier in the week. Bain set four career-highs as a follow up to his Freshman All-American season in 2014. He played nearly every snap until he was sidelined midway through the final game of the 2015 season. His career high total grade was a 97% versus FIU and he tallied a career high 13 knockdowns versus Tulsa. LeBlanc had 43 tackles and a league leading four interceptions while being credited with 11 pass breakups and 15 defended. His efforts placed him No. 32 nationally in interceptions. Honorable mention honors were bestowed to offensive linemen Mikingson Marsaille, who was named FAU’s offensive MVP on Sunday. Fellow offensive lineman Kelly Parfitt and fellow team captain Jenson Stoshak, who earned the team’s Iron Man Award, joined Marsaille on the honorable mention team. Also joining the trio were freshmen linebacker Ocie Rose and defensive back Jalen Young.
C-USA also honored standout freshman. The Owls started a nation leading 16 true freshmen and were fifth nationally in the number of freshmen and redshirt freshmen combined to regularly take the field. Four true freshmen earned a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman team which tied two other teams for the league high. Linebacker Ocie Rose, who tallied three interceptions for a single-season program high 155 return yards and three scores, and Azeez Al-Shaair, who led the Owls in total tackles with 94 and was named Co-Newcomer of the Year for the Owls, earned spots on the C-USA All-Freshman squad. Fellow defender Jalen Young, who had 69 tackles on the year and three interceptions, also made the team as did long snapper Casey Winner who provided every long snap in 2015 and worked with Schomp to lead the country with an average of 48.0 yards per snap. Winner saw the field goal unit hit 18-of-27 attempts and the PAT unit post a perfect 18-for-18 total on the year. The Owls will return 11 players who earned all-conference honors in 2016 and will begin spring drills Tuesday, March 15. The 2016 Spring Game Saturday, April 16. Deposits for 2016 season tickets can be made by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls.
Temple to Take on Toledo in 2015 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl Temple University and the University of Toledo will face off in the 2015 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl, as announced by the conferences and the bowl today. The Marmot Boca Raton Bowl will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 7 p.m. ET, at FAU Stadium. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Toledo from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) will serve as the home team, while Temple from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) will be away. “This is a truly compelling matchup, one that will surely make for an outstanding game,” said Marmot Boca Raton Bowl Executive Director Doug Mosley. “I’m eager for the teams’ advance contingents to make their site visits this week so that we may reveal to them our plans to make their bowl experience truly one-of-a-kind. I’m really excited about what is shaping up to be an incredible
bowl week.” This year’s matchup will be a battle of the defenses as both team’s lead their conference in scoring defense with Temple only allowing an average 19.2 yards per game and Toledo coming in at 21.1. The Owls claim defensive powerhouse Tyler Matakevich, who has 126 tackles this year, making him just the seventh college football player to ever register 100+ tackles in four different seasons. Chase Murdock leads the defensive effort for the Rockets as the senior linebacker has 78 tackles this season. Both offenses have also seen a lot of success with Toledo averaging 35.3 points and 463.3 yards per game and Temple putting up an average of 30.8 points and 369.2 yards. Temple (10-3, 7-2 AAC) enters the game coming off a 24-13 loss to Houston in the inaugural American Athletic Conference
Championship. Temple won the AAC East Division and went into the championship ranked No. 22 by the College Football Playoff and ended at No. 24. The Owls are led by junior quarterback P.J. Walker, who has surpassed 2,000 yards for the third consecutive season and junior running back Jahad Thomas, who earned his first 1,000-yard season on the ground. Protecting Walker is a strong offensive line that has created the nation’s best time of possession improvement since 2014. The team also boasts Lott Impact Trophy Finalist Matakevich. The senior linebacker is the only FBS player to lead his team in tackles every game of the 2015 season. The Owls are under the direction of Head Coach Matt Rhule. Toledo (9-2, 6-2 MAC) finished the season with a share of the MAC West Division crown after a 35-30 loss to Western

Michigan in the final game of the regular season. The Rockets led the MAC in scoring defense, only allowing an average of 21.1 points per game, and second in rushing defense (115.5). The team was extremely tough on the road, claiming victory in every road game (5-0) for the first time since they went 12-0 in 1971.The offense is led by senior quarterback Phillip Ely and junior running back Kareem Hunt who leads the MAC in rushing with an average of 111.8 yards per game. This game will be Jason Candle’s debut as head coach after he previously served as UT’s associate head coach/offensive coordinator since 2009. Strikers To Host Brazilian Champion Corinthians
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced an international friendly with Brazilian champion Sport Club Corinthians Paulista on January 23, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium. Founded in 1910, Corinthians competes in the top-flight Campeonato Brasilieiro Série A and is one of the most popular teams in Brazil. The 2015 season wrapped up on Sunday with Corinthians claiming their sixth Série A crown. “Corinthians is one of the most successful teams in Brazil and we’re excited to square off against them at Lockhart,” said Strikers CEO Sean Guerin. “While facing the Brazilian champions will be a tough test, the match will be a treat for Strikers fans. It will pay off in terms of preparation for the 2016 NASL season. I can’t wait.” Corinthians boasts a full trophy cabinet that includes: Six Brasileirão titles, three Copa
do Brasil honors, two FIFA Club World Cups, one Copa Libertadores, and a record 27 Campeonato Paulista titles. Both Corinthians and the Strikers are participating in the 2016 Florida Cup. While the two sides won’t play in that competition, the friendly provides Fort Lauderdale the opportunity to host the Brazilian champions. Tickets for that match, Florida Cup games involving the Strikers (in Orlando and Boca Raton), and the two Florida Cup matches at Lockhart Stadium are sale now here. Strikers in Florida Cup: Fort Lauderdale will begin play in the nine-team Florida Cup when they face FC Schalke 04 of the German Bundesliga on January 10 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. One week later, the Strikers will meet Independiente Santa Fe, commonly known as Santa Fe, from Colombia’s Categoíra Primera A league at FAU Stadium on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Florida Cup Matches at Lockhart Stadium: Lockhart Stadium will be the host site for two matches: Schalke-Atlético Mineiro on January 13 and Fluminense-Internacional on January 20.
Strikers To Field NPSL Team
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers boosted their player development efforts by today announcing the creation of Fort Lauderdale Strikers U-23, a developmental team that will compete in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) beginning in 2016. “Our aim for Fort Lauderdale Strikers U-23 is to provide an avenue for local talent to develop at a high level before transitioning to the first team,” said Strikers CEO Sean Guerin. “The NPSL is an established league with a strong national footprint and a growing presence in Florida. We believe the league aligns perfectly with our player development goals.” The NPSL is a national league that operates in the 4th Division of the U.S. Soccer pyramid and is affiliated with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA). The NPSL remains one of the largest and fastest-growing national leagues in North America with over 80 teams. “We are very excited to have yet another NASL team involved in our league,” added NPSL Chairman Joe Barone. “The Strikers are an iconic brand that have a tremendous history within American soccer. We are pleased to see the Sunshine Conference continue to grow and know that our fans and supporters in the region will benefit greatly from this addition.” Strikers U-23 will compete in the Sunshine Conference of the South Region, which
currently includes: Jacksonville United FC, Kraze United (Orlando), Miami Fusion FC, Miami United, Storm FC and Weston FC. “One of the greatest appeals of playing in the NPSL is the close proximity of our opponents,” said Guerin. “We are excited for the U-23s to foster local rivalries and grow the Strikers’ presence in South Florida.” Since joining Fort Lauderdale in July, originally as general manager, recently appointed head coach Caio Zanardi is tasked with overseeing all aspects of coaching and player development, including the U-23 team. The Strikers will announce the U-23 coach later this month. “The creation of Strikers U-23 is a big step toward our goal of developing a steady stream of talent,” said Zanardi. “It is a great opportunity for the club to instill our playing philosophy in younger players and, ultimately, groom them for the first team.” Details regarding a home venue and match tickets will be announced at a later date.
