Where is the Spirit of Christmas Is it me or does it feels like Christmas has lost its luster? We are one day from the big holiday many of us have been anticipating and for some reason it just does not feel like Christmas to me. In the last two months I’ve been all over Palm Beach County and I have seen only one Christmas tree so far. And unlike previous years, I have not heard any Christmas songs on the radio as of yet. But again, I honestly have not been listening to the radio, except for between 6 and 8 a.m. And somehow, the spirit of Christmas, that festive mood that usually fills the air, is just not there. I solicited a few people’s opinion on the topic. One was amazed that many big-box stores began shuffling out their Christmas decorations and expanding their toy aisles before we even got to Halloween. Another feared that we as a country have become so wrapped up in the commer-
cialism of the holiday season that we have truly forgotten the real meaning of the holidays we celebrate in this great country. For example, she pointed out that while not everyone in America celebrates Halloween, there are a handful of shelves in a store dedicated to this controversial holiday. Christmas on the other hand is a religious holiday that not everyone in America celebrates, and yet there is always a whole section of a store dedicated to it. A third said the Christmas season seems to be starting earlier and earlier each year. She was “somewhat in shock” after hearing some of the department stores announcing that they would stay open on Thanksgiving to get an early start on the Christmas shopping. That was more than six weeks away. It was so nice to see that I was not the only one who fret about the growing commercialism of Christmas. Someone told me a few days ago Christ-
mas is what one makes it to be. I tend to agree somewhat. To me, Christmas is such a lovely time of the year for spending precious time with friends and loved ones and for sharing gifts. (We all remember the excitement of waking up and seeing what kind of presents we have under the tree.) Most of all though, Christmas is a birthday celebration –when Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ whose coming brought hope to man for a better life. It is also a season of goodwill towards humankind. It is clear from the level of conspicuous commercialism that has taken over our nation, that the spirit of giving has been abused to where people are focusing less on the birth of the Savior and more on the items in the stores. With all the negatives that are taking place around us today, we would be better off as a people to try to focus more on the real mean-
ing of Christmas and less on the material aspects. We need therefore to extend a helping hand to others every day of every week of every month, and not just at this time of year. Unfortunately not everyone will be as fortunate this year. So as you scour the shelves for that trends toy or gift sets for the teenagers in our lives, consider those kids who will be waking up to no presents on Christmas morning. Right here in our local community, there is a house where the residents cannot afford a tree much less toys for the children inside. I know because I have written stories about those families over the years. Let us also remember those who have lost loved ones as at Christmas. Holidays are when the pain of this separation is greatest. Merry Christmas!
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Planning for a New Beginning! Another year is soon dawning and, whether you want it or not, you shall have to enter it, and experience what it shall bring. Some may be inevitably bad, as previous years have shown, but much shall be exciting and good, and you should not miss that, and make the most of it! Just learn how to deal with the negatives, and gradually eliminate them, while maximizing all happy surprises that shall meet you at every corner of your good realizations. This may turn out to be a daily exercise, but a necessary one which, at some point, will yield more good than bad experiences and fruit! It’s out of the good and the bad, that
you shall gather what is necessary to take your steps through the next 365 days. Depending on your skills, experience, and attitude, you shall be able to accomplish much. You shall be able to face whatever it comes if you meet it with courage, tackle new challenges with dispatch, and always face the unknown with the ability to predict correctly, analyze it, and bring out the best you are able to, from each new challenge! If the coming new year is to be welcomed with fresh expectations, you have to delete unhappy memories from your mind that are not necessary to be retained. If you protect them, you shall be unduly remembering them, and such
remembrance may affect you adversely as a hindrance to concentration on the now, with eyes firmly directed toward where you are proceeding! Start afresh, with positive anticipation that things can be better, and will be so based on your concrete plans, far more than any new year’s resolutions which you can so easily forget and discard. The way you view your own plans with confidence will inspire you into doing the very things that can cause your map to bring you into where you desire and need to be! Although we all occupy a world of uncertainties, where so many of the daily surprises we meet are ugly, the chances of healthy realization are far greater for
those who know these things, and do their wise planning around these realities, and the knowledge of alternative routes to be taken if and when necessary! Remember always that a losing battle is only one not fought; as long as it is vigorously carried on against all odds, the possibility of victory is always present and fully alive! Take your steps carefully, wherever you go; establish your goals with wisdom and the aid of experts, and seek diligently the most adequate means of overcoming obstacles which unquestionably shall present themselves at different corners of your road to progress!

Virtues of Hard Work And Determination
If someone were to ask you what is the primary factor for achieving success, what would be your answer? That was a question Kent Humphreys, a consultant to corporate executives, wondered about. Everyone in the business and professional world desires to attain success, but for many individuals, success seems just beyond their reach. So what are the key ingredients for success they might be lacking? In his book, Letters to Workplace Leaders, Humphreys cites a survey in which people were asked, “Of the successful people that you have met, which of the following is the main reason for their success?” Two answers were selected far above all of the others: hard work and determination. Hard work was the most common answer, chosen by 40 percent of the people surveyed. But determination was a close second, cited by 38 percent of those responding to the question. It was interesting that these far surpassed other possible success factors, such as knowledge, luck or good fortune, and influential contacts. If he had been included in this study, noted American inventor Thomas Edison most likely would have agreed. He once offered this intriguing observation that relates to success: “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” We live in an age when it seems many people do not want to exert the necessary effort – hard work and determination – to succeed, and then wonder why others manage to excel while they do not. They regard
themselves as “entitled,” rather than being responsible for earning those things they desire: status, career advancement, influence, monetary and material rewards. Recognizing the importance of hard work and determination, however, is not new. In fact, the Bible – written thousands of years ago – speaks extensively about both. In the Old Testament’s book of Proverbs, for example, we find numerous statements about the virtues and benefits of hard work and determined effort: “He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment” (Proverbs 12:11) “Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor” (Proverbs 12:24). “The laborer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on” (Proverbs 16:26). “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). This link between hard work and determination is also addressed in the New Testament. The apostle James understood this when he wrote, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). Perseverance blends hard work and determination into a winning formula. If you find yourself facing a trial in your workplace, a formidable challenge, remember there is no substitute for hard work and determination. Until next week!

There are many things in life I do not understand. The “Star Wars” mania is one of them. If ever there were a critic-proof movie, it’s “Star Wars.” The franchise is now owned by Disney, which acquired LucasFilms in 2012. They don’t make it easy for critics. They know they have sure-fire audience bait. The good news about the reboot “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is that it is pretty good, even for a skeptic like me. It is the best installment since the first three, starting in 1977 with “Star Wars,” which was then retitled Episode IV. After Episode VI was all downhill with a series of pretentious, silly “prequels.” “The Force Awakens” brings in J.J. Abrams (“Mission Impossible III”) as director, and its principal writer, working with characters created by George Lucas, is Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote “Raiders of the Lost Ark “ and “Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi.” Fans of the original Star Wars will be pleased that original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill all reprise their characters of Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. Luke Skywalker has disappeared in this
reboot, and two new characters spend most of the film looking for him while combatting new villain, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The new good girl and good guy are British actors Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn). They are both young and fresh and they bode well for this continuation of this reboot. It’s already a done deal, as two more episodes are in the works. There is no point in retelling the plot. Simply put, Kylo Ren, who dresses in black and runs an evil organization called The First Order, is a reincarnation of Darth Vader. First Order is clearly a fascist organization modelled after Hitler’s Nazi Party. Boo, hiss! There are a number of references to the original Star Wars movies; most notably the bar scene with all sorts of weird alien characters mingling with humans. Even the intro is the same: “A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far away.” There is one major plot twist, but we won’t spill the beans just yet. Star Wars fans should be pleased by the movie but saddened by the twist. For the rest of us “Force Awakens” is tolerable and pretty entertaining, and that should be enough to make this movie a big box office success. Rating: 1/2

Ballroom With a Twist-Mas! On Wednesday I attended the matinee performance of the Ballroom with a TwistMas show at the Wick Theatre. The show was highly energetic with a cast of dancers from Dancing with the Stars, Jonathan Roberts and Chelsie Hightower , So You Think You Can Dance Finalists, Legacy, Nick Garcia and Jonathan Piatero and American Idol Finalists Vonzell Solomon and Von Smith. It was a well received truly entertaining show. The dancing was awesome and singing quite beautiful from the American Idol finalists. Scott Stander, a friend from L.A. who produced many shows with Shirley Jones, Barbara Eden, Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna and Jan Mc Art’s brother Don, who starred in a show
called ” Say Goodnight Gracie”, that played here in Florida, has brought a wonderful way to spend the holiday’s in Boca Raton to us. Go and see this very uplifting show you will truly enjoy it! Thank you Scott and thank you Kay Renz for the dancer’s photos.

Former Fugitive Nabbed in Boca Hotel to stay in Ohio Jail Until Questions Answered By Andrew Welsh-Huggins
A former deep-sea treasure hunter who was arrested in a Boca Raton hotel earlier this year must explain why he should not face new penalties for failing to answer questions about gold he discovered in a historic shipwreck, a federal judge ruled this week. Judge Algenon Marbley also ordered Tommy Thompson to pay a $1,000 daily fine until he agrees to cooperate by answering those questions. Marbley’s ruling capped a long afternoon in court in Ohio for Thompson, 63, during which he also received a two-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine for failing to appear before a judge three years ago to answer similar questions. The sentence - including credit for nearly a year already spent behind bars - will be delayed until the issue of the location of 500 gold coins recovered is resolved. The judge expressed frustration that Thompson, a research scientist, couldn’t provide answers about the coins. “He creates a patent for a submarine, but he can’t remember where he put the loot,” Marbley said. Thompson went missing three years ago amid demands that he appear in court to answer similar questions. He and his longtime female companion, Alison Antekeier, 47, were apprehended in January at the
Hilton Hotel, 7920 Glades Road, where he was living. Thompson has faced accusations of cheating investors since he discovered the S.S. America, known as the Ship of Gold, in 1988. The gold rush-era ship sank in a hurricane off South Carolina in 1857 with thousands of pounds of gold aboard, contributing to an economic panic. The 161 investors who paid Thompson $12.7 million to find the ship never saw any proceeds. Two sued — a now-deceased investment firm president and the company that once published The Columbus Dispatch newspaper. Thompson pleaded guilty in April to contempt of court for failing to appear before a federal judge in 2012. Part of his plea deal requires him to answer questions in closeddoor sessions about the whereabouts of the gold coins. Thompson told the judge he suffers from a rare form of chronic fatigue syndrome that has created problems with short-term memory. He said he believes he was cooperative during the six-hour Q&A; session in October. “I told them everything I knew,” Thompson said. He said it would help if he had access to 75 boxes of materials seized from him in Florida, which might contain notes about the coins.
Driver Charged in 2014 Fatal Crash On Sunday morning, April 6, 2014, 65 year old George Morreale was riding his bicycle westbound in the bike lane of West Yamato Road, just passing I-95, when he was struck and killed by the driver of a Ford F150 pickup truck. Officers of the Boca Raton Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded and began their investigation. Witnesses told officers that the driver of the Ford continued west on Yamato after colliding with the bicyclist. They provided police with the tag information and followed the truck until it turned around and headed back to the scene. Officers met with Bianca Fichtel, who stated she was driving the truck, and Paul Maida, who claimed to be the passenger. Both Fichtel and Maida appeared impaired; they were unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech and appeared confused about the course of events. Maida had a revoked drivers license. In July 2014,
investigators charged Fichtel with DUI manslaughter. On May 27, 2015 Fichtel recanted her original statement and told investigators Maida was the driver of the Ford at the time of the fatal crash. Fichtel showed them an e-mail from Maida substantiating her story. After Fichtel’s statement, a search warrant was issued to obtain Maida’s e-mail correspondence. On November 24, 2015 investigators received a disk with Maida’s e-mails. Information in the e-mails indicated Maida was the driver and not Fichtel. Through subpoenaed AT&T information, investigators confirmed that the IP address connected with the e-mails belonged to Maida. The charges against Fichtel were dropped and Maida was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death, DUI manslaughter, driving with a suspended license, and making a false report to police.

LEG PAIN?
Broward Pain and Wellness treatment protocol has helped relieve thousands of patients like these with nerve pain....
may be able to help!
Many people in America are affected by peripheral neuropathy. Its symptoms include persistent and often unbearable pain in the legs, feet and/or forearms and hands. Those with the condition sometimes experience sensations ranging from numbness, burning or tingling to cramps or shooting pain from damage to small sensory nerves. These sensations may affect one’s balance, their ability to sleep, walk or drive.
Do you suffer from peripheral neuropathy pain?
Even if you’ve resigned yourself to a lifetime of pain. Even if you’ve been told that you just need to learn to live with the daily agony —consider scheduling Broward Pain and Wellness is currently introducing a non-surgical and painless your comprehensive neuropathy evaluation at multi-pronged protocol in South Florida. The results using this same protocol Broward Pain and Wellness. thus far are quite promising. By combining Low Level Light Treatment (LLLT) with neuro-rehabilitative therapies, our protocol has brought relief to many long-suffering patients who have endured the anguish of severe chronic pain—including pain caused by neuropathy and Type II diabetes.
Help may just be around the corner! www.bocaratontribune.com
“After going through chemotherapy, I began to experience severe shooting and stabbing pain and numbness in my feet and legs. My oncologist recommended a medication but unfortunately, it put me to sleep. After 10 treatments over the course of a month at the clinic, I am sleeping great and have plenty of energy. Thanks, I can enjoy life pain free and drug free.” -----Teresa, Real Estate Professional
“On a scale of 10 my pain was a nine…” “I couldn’t even walk because the pain was too much. The doctors said there was nothing they can do because I’m a diabetic and the surgery wouldn’t help my foot. Initially, I tried everything else from creams, needles, to TENS machines and nothing helped. The only thing that worked was the treatment and I’m 95% pain-free now…” — Arthur, Self-Employed

Toledo’s senior quarterback Phillip Ely rallied the Rockets in the fourth quarter to clinch a 32-17 win over No. 24 Temple despite the Owls valiant stab at a fourth-quarter comeback. In his last game with Toledo, Ely threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, which earned him the Offensive MVP honor as well as Jason Candle’s first victory in his debut as the Rockets’ head coach. On the other side, Temple’s quarterback P.J. Walker threw for 236 yards but was unable to put up any touchdowns. The Owls’ 17 points came off the foot of sophomore kicker Austin Jones. The defense on both sides set the tone for the game. Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich, the Bednarik and Nagurski Award winner for College Defensive Player of the Year, finished his career with a game-high 12 tackles, setting a new Temple record with 493 total stops. The Toledo defense held the Owls to 67 yards of total offense in the first half. Sophomore Ja’Wuan Woodley, who had a key safety in the first half, was named the game’s Defensive
MVP. Seniors Chase Murdock and Trent Voss paced the front seven with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Things started to heat up in the fourth quarter. Toledo broke open a close game with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Ely to wide receiver Cody Thompson to make the score 19-9 with 12:41 left. A Kareem Hunt one-yard TD with less than six minutes left gave UT a comfortable 25-9 lead. However, Temple came back and put together an 11-play, 68-yard drive and converted a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 25-17. The Owl onside kick that followed was battled over for two minutes before UT’s Thompson came out with the ball. Hunt broke free for a 41-yard score to give Toledo its final margin. A last-gasp Temple drive ended on downs with 40 seconds left. The Owls were without the services of leading rusher Jahad Thomas, CB Tavon Young and LB Avery Williams, who exited the game at the half. They entered the game without Alex Wells as the first team all-conference safety suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the week. After the teams traded punts to open up the game, Temple pinned Toledo to their own one-yard line. Starting at their own 48-yard line, Temple used a 13-play 40-yard
drive, ending with a 29-yard Jones field goal to get on the board and take a 3-0 lead with 1:13 left in the quarter. Although UT’s offense moved the ball effectively through the air, as Ely hit on 15-of-21 passes for 168 yards. Following a career-long 64-yard punt by Nick Ellis that pushed Temple back to its own nine-yard line, Rocket linebacker Woodley hit Thomas at the three-yard line, causing a fumble that went out of the back of end zone for a safety. Toledo then took over at its own 45-yard line on the ensuing free kick, setting the stage for UT’s first touchdown. On the fifth play of the drive, Corey Jones took a short pass from Ely and fought through three tackles for a 26-yard touchdown to put Toledo up, 9-3, with 12:16 left in the second quarter. Toledo tacked on a field goal as time expired to take a 12-3 lead into halftime. The Rockets forced a three-and-out from Temple, taking over at their own 42-yard line. Two big plays, including a 26-yard pass from Ely to Michael Roberts put Toledo in field goal range, where Jameson Vest made it a nine-point Rockets lead with a 38-yard field goal. Temple opened the second half with an eight-play 67-yard drive, capped by an Austin Jones field goal, cutting the lead to 12-6. A 40-yard pass from Walker to wide receiver Ventell Bryant and a 13-yard rush from Brandon Shippen, set up Jones for a 25-yard FG, his 22nd of the season, setting a new single-season school record. Jones passed Don Bitterlich’s 1975 total to take over first on the all-time Temple list. Following a three-and-out by the Rockets, Temple came right back with another Jones field goal, this time from 35 yards out, further trimming the lead to 12-9 with 6:11 left in the third quarter. Sean Chandler started the Owls at midfield with a 12-yard punt return and Walker added a 14-yard rush to set up Jones’ score. Toledo marched down the field on their

next possession, getting to Temple’s 44-yard line. On a 3rd and 12, Temple strong safety Nate L. Smith broke up a pass in the end zone, keeping Toledo off the board. The teams traded punts to open the fourth quarter, with Alex Starzyk booting a careerbest 71-yarder for Temple. However, the kick was out of the reach of the Temple defense, trickling into the end zone for a touchback. On the next play, Ely hit Thompson on a play-action pass over the middle and Thompson pulled away from the Owl defender for an 80-yard touchdown to give UT a 10-point cushion, 19-9, with 12:41 to play. Temple got down to the Toledo 34 on its next possession, but Walker’s pass was broken up by senior safety Rolan Milligan and was intercepted by the Rockets’ Juwan Haynes at the 26-yard line. From there, Toledo put together a 74-yard drive that took 5:31 off the clock, ending with a one-yard TD run from Hunt. The Owls blocked the extra point, setting the score to 25-9 with 5:46 to play. After the Toledo score, Temple recorded its first touchdown of the game, capping an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a two-yard run from tight end Kip Patton. Shippen had two big catches on the drive, and was thrown to as Toledo was flagged for pass interference in the end zone, setting up the touchdown. Temple elected to go for two, and Walker scrambled out of pressure and somehow found Robby Anderson in the end zone, making it an eight-point game, 25-17, with 2:50 on the clock. Temple went for the onside kick, but the referees signaled that Toledo came up with the ball under a pile of players at midfield. Hunt then tacked on an insurance score for the Rockets, scoring from 41-yards out to put the game out of reach at 32-17 with just 2:29 on the clock. The Owls had one more possession before the clock ran out, but the drive stalled at the Toledo 27-yard line, ending the game 32-17 in Toledo’s favor.
