Many notable guests attendedthe event, including BRAA Chair Gene Folden, Vice Chair Frank Feiler, Secretary & Treasurer George BrownandBRAA boardmembers Cheryl Budd, Jack Fox and Bill Schwartz, as well as board member and Boca Raton Deputy Mayor Robert S. Weinroth. The ribbon cutting was met with great applausefrom the full house of attendees, who then toured the 9,270 sq.
ft. building, which is situated on 1.79 acres east of the runway in the Research Park at FAU.Following the tour, Airport Executive Director Clara Bennett led the speaking portion of the evening, thanking the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce and the Airport Authority board and staff for their support. Airport Authority Chair Gene Folden delivered the first speech, in which he highlighted the importance of the new administrationbuilding. “Combining airport administration, operations and maintenance functions into one location allows the Authority to better serve the needs of the aviation and local community, while saving costs,” said Folden. “This building is one of a number of key infrastructure improvements that the Airport Authority has embarked upon toenhance safety and service for the Airport’s tenants and users.” Folden thanked the Florida Department of Transportationfor their funding, as well as Research Park Executive Director Andrew Duffell and the Park for their involvement.
Folden was followed by Airport Authority Vice-Chair Frank Feiler, whospoke on the continuing growth of the Airport. “I have seen the Airport grow to meet the needs of not only the aviation community, but the Boca Raton community as well,” said Feiler. He then noted the ecological benefits of the new building, which has been constructed to achieve a LEED Silver Certification. Feiler emphasized the building’s sustainable site development, water efficiency and energy use reduction, before thanking the architects, builders and engineers: SchenkelSchultz Architecture, MBR Constructionand Ricondo & Associates as general consultants. Feiler closed his speech by dedicating the building to the memory of Ken Day, the former Executive Director, who passed away unexpectedly in 2013. There is a plaque in his honor in the lobby of the building. David Knies, Chairman of Vital Flight, concluded the evening with a video showcasing the nonprofit organization’s work.Vital Flightprovides air
travel to those in need of transportation to hospitals and other care facilities. The Airport has partnered with Vital Flight for numerous events, such as A Special Day for Special Kids, which is held annuallyat the Airport.Eighty percent of the funds for the administration building were obtained through a FDOT aviation capital improvement grant, with the remaining 20% of the funding provided by Boca Raton Airport Authority revenue generated through land leases and fuel flow fees. The FDOT grant is comprised entirely of revenue from a gas tax levied on airport users throughout the state;meaning none of the money for the building camefrom local, county, or state property or sales tax dollars. Through the efforts of many individuals and organizations, the building stands as a testament to an enduring community partnership. My Heart is Broken But I Know Their Legacy Will Live on It is like a déjà vu experience. Exactly one year ago, I penned my New Year’s column about the deaths of three giants - former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, former U.S. Senator Edward Brooke and longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott. Here I am again, kicking off this year with the passing of three legends –author and journalist Rhonda Renee Swan, 51, longtime local gospel singer and minister Bishop Leonard Nathan Quince, Jr., 96, and the unforgettable Natalie Cole, 65. A wise old woman once said that death comes in threes. While the persistence of this belief is difficult to explain and easily demolished, I still maintain that my grandmother was a clever woman. Just two days before Christmas, my mentor broke the news to me that my dear friend and local editorial writer Rhonda had died of breast cancer. She worked at the Palm Beach Post and wrote occasionally for the Sun-Sentinel. And only days later, Bishop Quince, a spiritual rouser whose baritone and foghorn voice stirred souls for years, also slipped away after battling cancer. On New Year’s Eve, my heart took another pounding with
word of the passing of Ms. Cole in a Los Angeles hospital. Bishop Quince was an icon in South Palm Beach County. He started several in Delray Beach. Many recall when he and his late sister, Idell Boyer Reynolds, traveled the country from 1936 through the 1960s recording gospel albums and singing in churches with the Dixie Hummingbirds, Pilgrim Travelers, Five Blind Boys and other groups. Like Bishop Quince, Ms. Cole made great music and wowed the world with her angelic voice and heavenly spirit. She also had local connection. Her sisters, Timolin and Casey, are Boca Raton residents and have done an amazing job through the Nat King Cole Generation Hope organization, which provides music education to area children in need. She also attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst years ahead of Rhonda and me. Rhonda and my friendship goes back some 30 years when we both were students at UMass. She worked for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, the campuses daily newspaper, and I was the editor of Nummo News, the monthly publication that served the university’s black students. She felt deeply
about a range of issues then as she did until death. Many of our fights centered on a topic that she cared dearly about: equity and inclusion. As a reporter, an editor and as a columnist, Rhonda’s quest was always to make sure that the stories of people of color and the disenfranchised were told fairly and accurately in the newspaper. I remember her literally “blessing me in a come to Jesus moment” after classes one day, when Amy Carter, then a Brown University student and daughter of former President Jimmy Carter, led a takeover of an administration building to protest CIA recruiters on UMass campus. Nummo News did not cover the incident, in which 51 students, including Carter, were arrested because I did not think the issue was of interest to my readers. Rhonda did not see things that way. “So you’re telling me that the CIA is not interested in recruiting black people?” she asked me as she fixed her inquisitively yet suspicious look squarely in my eyes. “Anytime you have an issue that could potentially impact any student on campus, especially financially, it is of interest to black students.” From that day onward, my news judgment
got keener I became a better journalist, thanks to Rhonda’s sharp news judgment. She was a prolific writer whose work earned her numerous awards. This sister was confident in her skills, but not cocky. She never shied away from seeking my advice when needed. And while many knew her as this hardnosed news woman, I knew her as a woman of deep faith, courage and conviction. Her spiritual journey and love for humanity and justice began at an early age in a close-knit believing family and the Church of God in Chris. Throughout the life her life, she inspired many by living a life that exemplified her daily meditation and mantra: “Love. Compassion. Wisdom.” She was a courageous, independent, classy, beautiful black woman with a smile to live for. She loved life, her children, grandchildren, family and her friends. Rhonda’s arms were always open to help any and everyone in need. Having completed her assignment on earth, I know God has already greeted her: “Welcome Rhonda, job well done!” C. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Begin the Year With New Dreams! Any dream, to be fulfilled, cannot remain static within the dreamer. It needs to be dynamic, requiring continual forward motion until its fulfilment is a reality! That’s why my challenge here is that you add wings to your dreams, so they may soar till the time of their realization! Make sure they get somewhere during the new year so as to accomplish what is intended, according to realistic actions and expectations. The late Sir John Marks Templeton recognized that “many people know what they want out of life, but few turn their dreams into a carefully planned success map.” That
means, no dream will come to fulfilment unless it’s constantly before you, through the necessary action required to make it real! At the same time you, as the dreamer, must know in advance all that the dream is supposed to accomplish. On that basis, you can proceed with dispatch, putting in place every necessary detail, never faltering in taking each urgent step! The perpetual challenge is to keep dreaming and acting! Dreams may be fulfilled exactly as you expected, and in most cases they may also affect other parts of your life
that you could not have previously imagined, in a healthy, positive way! It is not uncommon, occasionally, to discover that certain dreams never dreamed, can also come to pass. They are bonuses from God! There are also others that are transcended when realized; they deliver much more than one could have ever believed or anticipated! The full validity of any dream is not based on how easy its realization may be. Even when it may appear out of human reach, one should not be intimidated so as to stop dreaming.
Some come to fruition rather swiftly, while others require a lifetime for full achievement. Setbacks shall inevitably accompany them in their course, but even then their fulfilment can still become a joyous reality! Whenever a dream is shattered before becoming reality, don’t stop dreaming. Instead, dream a new dream. Make it more aligned with reality and common sense! Life entails a series of revisions and adjustments so that we may more effectively harmonize with the creator’s unique design for each of us, every step of the way. Just don’t desist of your dreams!

FAU College of Business Names Roland Kidwell Director of The Adams Center for Entrepreneurship
Roland Kidwell, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Management Programs within the College of Business at Florida Atlantic University, has been named director of FAU’s Adams Center for Entrepreneurship. “We’re pleased to welcome Roland Kidwell as the new director of the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship,” saidDaniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business. “Roland is a proven leader, and an internationally known scholar in entrepreneurship and family business. Entrepreneurship is a key driving force in a free enterprise economic system, and it is central to our mission in the College of Business. We’re committed to broadening the academic research and teaching activities of the Adams Center, as well as our outreach to the business community, with our goal to build a top 25 entrepreneurship program at FAU.” Named in recognition of FAU graduate Scott H. Adams in 2001, the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship offers exciting learning opportunities for students to begin integrating their ideas with learned business skill sets, while engaging in the business community. Kidwell arrived in July from the University of Wyoming, where he served on the management faculty for the past 10 years. He conducts research in entrepreneurship, family business, franchising, and various issues related to human resource management. A native of Washington, D.C., Kidwell started in journalism before earning his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University and beginning his academic career. Kidwell has been working throughout the fall semester with his predecessor at the Adams Center, Kimberly Gramm, who is now the associate vice president of FAU Tech Runway, a public-private partnership formed in 2014 to foster technology start-ups. The Adams Center focuses on enhancing the student experience by providing practical applications for the education they receive in the classroom through such activities as the annual Business Plan Competition, in which teams of students have the opportunity to meet and network with experienced venture capital principals, early stage angel investors, successful entrepreneurs, and senior business leaders who serve as judges for the competition. Registration for this year’s competition is now open, with the final set for Monday, April 11. Starting in January, the Adams Center ofwww.bocaratontribune.com

Each fall, the center participates in Global Entrepreneurship Week, an international celebration of the innovators and job creators, by hosting several events and programs for students of all disciplines and the greater FAU community. The Center also has worked in conjunction with local entrepreneurship efforts including StartUp Palm Beach, which hosts an annual StartUp Weekend where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. In the spring, the Center hosts Entrepreneur Learning Sessions, a series of free workshops designed to empower aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs. The Adams Center will continue to collaborate with Tech Runway on a variety of activities to support entrepreneurship and build the entrepreneurial ecosystem in South Florida, Gropper said. Kevin Cox, who is completing his Ph.D. at FAU, will serve as the Center’s assistant director and continue to teach the Entrepreneur Boot Camp course. The Adams Center will seek to add faculty, continue its entrepreneur-in-residence mentoring program, and broaden its research activities, Kidwell said, particularly in the area of family business. The Center also is working on a grant with Tech Runway to encourage veterans to become entrepreneurs. The grant is undertaken in a partnership with FAU’s Military and Veterans Affairs office, the Small Business Development Center at Palm Beach State College, and three other Florida universities. “Entrepreneurship is thriving in South Florida,” Kidwell said. “Tech Runway and other elements of the university including the Research Park provide great opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. What we’re trying to do with the Adams Center is engage students and grow entrepreneurs across campus, not only in the College of Business but other places in the university. So we want to encourage that and graduate them into all of the entities that are available to help them grow their businesses.” January 8 - 14, 2015

She and her teammates won the Nordic Cup title in 1997 with the U.S. team.

New Year’s Day at Deer Creek C.C. We celebrated New Year’s Day at the Deer Creek Country Club where they served a huge Sunday brunch buffet. We were joined by several good friends including Marleen Forkas, Mondessa Swift, Wendy Baum, and Evalyn David.

Great Gatsby New Year Eve Party Bob and I attended a Great Gatsby New Year’s Eve party at the Pompano Elks Club. We started the evening with cocktails and hors deouvres of beef wellington and bacan and brussel sprouts, which was followed by a very delicious lobster bisque and a huge salad wedge. The entree of surf and turf consisted of a steak and huge jumbo shrimp, garlic mashed potato’s and asparagus. Dessert was a huge tray of assorted pastries. It was a very delightful New Year’s. We met some new friends as well. There was a one man band, but he sounded great singing and dancing the night away!

One-time pretty boy Leonardo DiCaprio is all grown up and all manned up for his role as rugged frontiersman, Hugh Glass, in “The Revenant.” There is little doubt DiCaprio will be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his punishing performance as Hugh Glass. There really was a Hugh Glass, born in 1790 and killed by hostile Arikara Indians in 1833. “The Revenant” covers the most incredible chapter in Glass’ tumultuous life. It occurred in 1823 in the area of presentday Montana and South Dakota. Glass was the experienced scout in a fur hunting party led by Capt. Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson). Mexican-born director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Birdman,” “Biutiful”) begins the story with a prologue uttered by Glass: “As long as you can grab a breath, you fight,” followed by a brutal attack by savage Arikara Indians. Half of the company is killed and the other half flees on a raft and thence into the wilderness with Glass leading the way. Glass knows that wilderness like the back of his hand and he understands Native American well enough he speaks the language and married an Indian woman who bore him a son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), who is part of the party. Second in command is John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), who is clearly envious of Hugh Glass and untrustworthy. When Glass encounters two grizzly bear cubs, he is savagely attacked by the mama bear. Using CG effects, it is one of the most convincing animal attacks you will see.
www.bocaratontribune.com
Glass survives the attack and is forced to kill the bear, but he is sorely wounded. The men fashion a sled so Glass can be dragged along. The opportunist Fitzgerald suggests they just put Glass out of his misery so they can move faster, but the highly principled Capt. Henry pledges to protect him and even offers a reward for his safe return. The arc of the story hinges on a betrayal. Hawk and young Jim Bridger (Will Poulter) stay behind to protect Glass. When their backs are turned, Fitzgerald tries to smother the helpless Glass. Hawk intervenes and is killed by Fitzgerald. This is the second major loss for Glass, whose Indian wife (Grace Dove) was killed earlier. Glass makes it a personal crusade to free Powaqa (Melaw Nakehk’o), daughter of the local Chief. Left for dead and robbed of his possessions including his guns, Glass miraculously survives and begins a literal 200-mile crawl back to Fort Kiowa, South Dakota. While “The Revenant” is as violent as “The Hateful Eight” it differs in the fact it has a moral compass. Hugh Glass is a good and honorable man who loves his family and endures unbearable loss. Fitzgerald is a devious coward who deserves whatever comes his way. “Only God can claim revenge,” Glass concludes as he faces his nemesis in a final showdown. “The Revenant” boasts spectacular cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki and a moody, spooky musical score by Ryuichi Sakamoto. It is a frontier action-adventure, but it is also a work of art. Rating:

The Importance of a Unique Mission When you go to work, does having a sense of mission – an underlying purpose – factor into how much you enjoy what you do? An article in Wall Street Journal, a respected business periodical, discussed the increasing focus corporations are now putting on their employees’ need for a sense of purpose in their work. For many of them, having a job to perform and earning a regular paycheck is not sufficient – they also want to feel their work has deeper meaning. This concern is shared by many people as they evaluate their investment options. For instance, Factiva, an online business information and research tool, discovered the words “mission” “higher purpose,” or “changing the world” were discussed 3,243 times by investors with their financial advisors on recorded phone calls in 2014, compared to only 2,318 times five years before. One reason for this significant surge in interest is generational. There is a strong emphasis among many men and women in the so-called “millennial generation” who want to work somewhere that is making a difference in the world. They want their vocations – and the companies that employ them – to contribute positively to people that use their products and services, communities where they are located, and to the world at large. Many businesses and organizations already have statements of mission, vision and values, so they can readily address the desire for a greater purpose that many of their workers and prospective employees have. A well-articulated mission statement helps an individual to quickly discern whether a company’s overriding purpose and their own are in alignment.
For those of us that see our work as an expression of our spiritual convictions, this also makes a lot of sense. The Bible teaches vocational pursuits are part of God’s calling and His plan for us to participate in His creation constructively. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). In other words, the gifts and talents we possess are not arbitrary, but divinely given for us to participate in God’s work locally and globally. As employers, executives and managers, one of the ways we can best serve those working under our direction is to communicate how much we value the ways God has designed them and our business for His unique purposes. This can also serve as a good recruiting tool, showing job seekers that the company has an understanding of its role in society and how individual members of the team can contribute toward achieving that purpose. People who find meaning in their work and pursue excellence in all they do typically find their jobs more fulfilling and rewarding, and not just in terms of compensation. And that dedication deserves genuine recognition and appreciation. As Proverbs 22:29 states, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” When workers feel they are “on a mission,” undertaking tasks and responsibilities that transcend mere deadlines and quotas, they become inspired, highly motivated and more productive. The company benefits as well, making it a win-win situation for everyone. Until next week!
Tedeschi Trucks Band Headlines The 2016 Sunshine Music Festival When it’s January in Florida that means it’s time for the annual Sunshine Music Festival to bring some of the most electrifying musical performers to the state. And this year promises to be the most unique yet! Once again headlined by the preeminent bluesrock leader Tedeschi Trucks Band the 2016 Sunshine Music Festival features a great line-up of exciting acts on two live music stages along with a wider array of refreshing craft beers and delectable menus from a wider variety of food vendors. The Festival will kick off Saturday, January 16, 2016, 11:30am, at Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg in the Tampa Bay Area and then Sunday, January 17, 2016, 11:30am at Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton in South Florida. For the fourth year in a row Tedeschi Trucks Band, or TTB as their fans prefer to call them, are returning to what has become their signature live musical event. Formed in 2010 with a spirit of adventure that inspired Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks to shelve their equally successful solo careers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, a 12-piece tour-de-force, has quickly become the vanguard of modern roots music. Hailed as “a deeply skilled groove machine (Los Angeles Times) that “booms like a soul thunderclap” (Boston Herald), the band has cemented their reputation for thrilling audiences worldwide with its legendary live performances, original songwriting and award-winning albums. In just five years, TTB has toured extensively worldwide with top-bill performances at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Bonnaroo and the venerable Newport Jazz Festival. Driven by Trucks, #16 of the top 100 Guitarists of All Time (Rolling Stone), and Tedeschi’s impassioned, blues-soaked vocals, the Jacksonville-based group earned a Grammy for its debut Revelator, followed with a dynamic live double disc, Everybody’s Talkin’, and 2013’s acclaimed Made Up Mind. An 89-year-old Boca Raton man was killed after he rear-ended a car then crashed into a support column at a country club valet drop off area west of the city on New Year’s Eve, authorities said. Irving Rosenberg, 89, was rushed to Delray Medical Center where he died on Friday, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office. The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Thursday as Rosenberg was driving his January 8 - 14, 2015
his 15-year tenure with The Allman Brothers Band, TTB has fully dedicated itself to touring and increasing its repertoire with new material for their highly anticipated third studio album, to be released in early 2016. Also appearing on this year’s bill for the Festival are: Singer/Songwriter/Musicians The Indigo Girls who Rolling Stone describes as the “ideal duet partners. Their voices soar and swoop as one, alternately raucous and soothing”; popular New Orleans hard-edged funk band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue; Hard Working Americans an American rock supergroup featuring singer Todd Snider, bassist Dave Schools from Widespread Panic, Neal Casal of Chris Robinson Brotherhood on guitar and vocals, Chad Staehly of Great American Taxi on keyboards and Duane Trucks, younger brother to Derek on drums; Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, regarded as one of the best live bands on the planet and fresh off the Rolling Stones Zip Code Tour; New Orleans rock hybrid The Revivalists; the unique dobro influenced sound of The Jerry Douglas Band; Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna legendary guitarist Jorma Kaukonen; the rocking guitar mastery of the Bobby Lee Rodgers; and the killer licks, soaring guitar solos and heart wrenching vocals of Joanne Shaw Taylor. With More Great Music, More Great Craft Beers and More Great Food, the 2016 Sunshine Music Festival headlined by the Tedeschi Trucks Band comes only to Florida for two dates in 2016, Saturday, January 16 at Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg in the Tampa Bay Area; and Sunday, January 17 at Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton in South Florida. Toyota Camry up to the valet station at the Boca West County Club, he crashed into the rear of a 2014 Infiniti Q50 driven by a valet employee, Daniel Rodriques, who was exiting the drop-off area, investigators said. Rosenberg then accelerated into a support column for the building at 20583 Boca West Drive, north of Glades Road and just east of Florida’s Turnpike, according to the report. His passenger, Alice Rosenberg and Rodriques, 27, were taken to Boca Raton Regional Hospital with minor injuries, according to the report. Firefighters who responded to the wreck had to use extraction tools to remove people from their cars, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. Alcohol impairment was not a factor in the crash, according to the report.

Former FAU Soccer Player Charged Boca Raton Regional Hospital In Killing of Another Student Wins National Research Corporations Consumer Choice Award During Botched Drug Deal
By CRA News Service
Just one month ago, Donovan Malik Henry was a freshman at Florida Atlantic University with a promising future as he studied civil engineering and Sports Medicine. Today, the 19-year-old who also was a walkon member of the men’s soccer team, is in the Palm Beach County Jail, accused of killing a fellow student in a drug deal gone bad at an off-campus housing complex recently. “Drug dealing is a risky business,” Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander said. “This is another example and I’ve seen it in the past. And unfortunately this resulted in the death of a young man.” Henry of Miramar is charged with firstdegree murder and robbery with a firearm of 19-year-old Nicholas Max Acosta. Detectives tracked Henry to Miami Gardens where they arrested him on Dec. 30, a day after the shooting. He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail without bail. Gunshots interrupted that quiet night at University Park Apartments, 135 N.W. 20th St., a gated housing complex of nearly 600 students less than a mile east of FAU near Dixie Highway. The complex, which opened in April, houses students from three area universities and college. Police said Henry and four other men went to the complex shortly before 7:30
p.m. with the intent to buy narcotics from Acosta. Henry had texted Acosta earlier inquiring about buying drugs, according to a police report. Acosta, who was at his girlfriend’s apartment, then gave Henry the access code to get inside the building after the suspect texted Acosta “Yo bro I’m here,” police said. Henry knocked on the third-floor apartment door and when Acosta’s girlfriend opened it, he and another man entered the apartment, police said. The girlfriend shut the door after the two men entered. Three other men, including one who was wearing a green mask and had a gun, barged in and ordered Acosta and his girlfriend to the ground, the woman told police. When Acosta asked, “What’s going on?” the masked suspect shot him twice in the torso, the woman told police. The men fled the scene on two cars. Paramedics rushed Acosta to Delray Medical Center, where he died. Acosta’s girlfriend told police that her boyfriend sold drugs from the apartment, which police said is not uncommon in college communities. “Our vice intelligence and narcotic officers work that area pretty extensively,” Alexander said. Both Henry and Acosta have had previous issues with drugs and the law, official records show. Broward Sheriff ’s Office deputies detained Henry in November for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, court records show. He pleaded no contest to the charge, but adjudication was withheld, meaning no conviction was recorded in the case, records show. In September 2014, Acosta was arrested twice on marijuana-related charges in Palm Beach County. Charges in both cases were dropped after he completed a pretrial diversion program, which gives first-time offenders a chance to avoid prosecution by doing some type of public service, court records show. Anyone with information on the shooting, in particular the other four suspects, are asked to call Detective Scott Hanley at 561-338-1344.
Boca Raton Regional Hospital has been named a 2015/2016 Consumer Choice Award recipient by the National Research Corporation (NRC). The annual accolade identifies hospitals across the United States that healthcare consumers choose as having the highest quality and image. Boca Regional joins such prestigious institutions as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts General Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Hospital in this year’s listings, and is the only provider in Palm Beach County to receive the distinction. Brian Wynne, Vice President of Business Development at NRC commented, “For each of the past twenty years, winning hospitals have provided outstanding experiences that have transcended their four walls
www.bocaratontribune.com
to build consumer preference, loyalty and trust in their markets. We are honored to congratulate this year’s winners on a job well done.” Award recipients are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings in NRC’s Market Insights survey, the largest online consumer healthcare survey in the country. The survey includes more than 300,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia. Hospitals named by consumers are ranked based on their Core Based Statistical Areas as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, with winning facilities being ranked the highest. “We are most gratified to receive this significant, third-party distinction,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO at Boca Regional. “It adds to our growing list of national accolades such as U.S News & World Report’s listing of us as a Top Ranked Regional Hospital. We are very proud to see our quality recognized in such outstanding fashion.”

“After going through chemotherapy, I began to experience severe shooting and stabbing pain and numbness in my feet and legs. My oncologist recommended a medication but unfortunately, it put me to sleep. After 10 treatments over the course of a month at the clinic, I am sleeping great and have plenty of energy. Thanks, I can enjoy life pain free and drug free.” -----Teresa, Real Estate Professional
“On a scale of 10 my pain was a nine…” “I couldn’t even walk because the pain was too much. The doctors said there was nothing they can do because I’m a diabetic and the surgery wouldn’t help my foot. Initially, I tried everything else from creams, needles, to TENS machines and nothing helped. The only thing that worked was the treatment and I’m 95% pain-free now…” — Arthur, Self-Employed

sports Garin Justice Named FAU Football’s Offensive Line Coach
Garin Justice has joined Florida Atlantic University’s football staff and will serve as the Owls’ offensive line coach, Charlie Partridge, FAU’s head football coach, announced. “I always vowed that I would only leave Concord University for a special place, and with Coach (Charlie) Partridge at the helm, Florida Atlantic is a special place,” said Justice. “When you coach, you want to go to a place where you’ve got a chance to do big things. FAU football is on the path to do big things. Coach Partridge and his staff have done a tremendous job and I’m excited to improve upon that. I want to thank Coach Partridge for this amazing opportunity - that is absolutely a dream come true. I can’t wait to get to work. Owls Up!” Justice will join newly-hired Offensive Coordinator Travis Trickett as new staff members when the squad returns to school Sunday, Jan. 10, but the duo of Trickett and Justice first began working together at West Virginia as student/graduate assistants and then again at Florida State. Justice’s career coaching journey then took a different path which ultimately led to a head coaching position at Concord University in Athens W.Va. - a position at which he served for the last five seasons. Justice assumed the helm of Concord, a program that had been winless (0-11) as
recently as 2008, in January of 2011. In his five-year stint, the Mountain Lions were 40-17 under his direction which included a 13-1 season in 2014. Additionally, Justice led Concord to two conference championships and two NCAA Division II playoff appearances. On Justice’s watch 84 players were named All-West Virginia Athletic Conference or All-Mountain East Conference selections while two athletes earned Defensive WVIAC Player of the Year accolades in addition 18 All-Region selections and eight All-American honorees were named. His 2015 squad had 11 players earn Mountain East Conference honors and two All-Region recognitions. He coached the top-offensive lineman in the MEC who led a unit that allowed the fewest sacks in the league and made way for the program’s running back to set the all-time rushing record. His defense finished the season No. 2 in total defense. In 2014, the Mountain Lions won the most games in school history (13) while also making an appearance in the national semifinals. Under Justice’s guidance, CU won its first playoff games in school history, defeating West Chester (51-36) and Bloomsburg (32-26) which gave Concord its first Super One Region Championship. Not only did Concord set school records in wins (13), but Justice also was named Mountain East
Conference Coach of the Year. It was his second league coach of the year award in four seasons at Concord. Justice coached the offensive line at Concord and tutored two All-American linemen in Rustin Mayorga and Coleman Osborne. All five of Justice’s linemen earned all-conference during the 2014 season while paving the way for MEC Offensive Player of the Year Calvinaugh Jones. The 2013 season was a showcase of what would come. Concord went 8-3 and narrowly lost out on winning the inaugural MEC title and earning a playoff bid. Concord tallied three-year highs under Justice on offense in points per game (26.6) and rushing yards per game (167.9). Just as impressive was Justice’s defense which posted three-year lows in points allowed per game (14.2), rushing yards allowed per game (108.4) and passing yards allowed per game (159.7). His Concord teams exceled in all phases of the game defensively as well with a No. 3 national rank in four categories and two players earned All-American honors for their efforts. Special teams held a No. 6 national mark. In 2012, Justice’s second season in Athens, Concord registered a 7-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the WVIAC. In Justice’s first season as a head coach (2011), he led Concord to its first WVIAC title since 1990 as well as the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs after CU finished 7-4 overall and 7-1 in WVIAC competition and he was named the 2011 WVIAC Coach of the Year. A native of Gilbert, W. Va., Justice originally came to Concord in January of 2009 as the offensive line coach and strength & conditioning coordinator. Justice played a prominent role in Concord’s remarkable turnaround after its 0-11 season in 2008. In 2009, Justice’s first year on the CU staff, the Mountain Lions went 6-5. In 2010, Concord was 8-3, winning eight games for the first time in 19 years. Prior to his arrival in Athens, Justice spent two seasons at Florida State as an offensive graduate assistant, offensive videographer,

and weight room graduate assistant. Justice helped develop four freshmen All-Americans and two All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers. In his two seasons with the Seminoles, FSU was 16-10 overall. The offensive line provided protection for running backs who gained more than 2,300 yards on the ground with 27 TDs in 2008 and tallied more than 1,600 yards in 2007 with 12 TDs. The passing game covered 2,500 yards in 2008 and 3,143 in 2007. The line allowed an average of less than two sacks per game. He completed his master’s degree from Florida State in sports administration in 2008. While at FSU, Justice was a member of two bowl staffs. The 2007 team fell to Kentucky in the Music City Bowl and downed Wisconsin in the 2008 Citrus Bowl. Justice began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at West Virginia in 2006 where he worked with the offensive line and helped Dan Mozes win the Rimington Award as the nation’s best center. The 2006 Mountaineers finished their campaign with an 11-2 record. The line provided protection for a running back corps that rushed for nearly 4,000 yards and tallied 48 scores. The passing game recorded 15 touchdowns and nearly 1,700 yards through the air and downed Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl. “I’m excited to introduce Garin as Florida Atlantic’s offensive line coach,” said Partridge. “He brings experience from the highest level as a player and as a coach. He also has been part of an amazing turn around at Concord.” Justice was a three-year starting offensive tackle for West Virginia University and served as team captain in 2005 for a Mountaineer squad that went 11-1, defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and ranked No. 5 in the season-ending AP Poll. He earned All-Big East honors and was a Sporting News second team All-American for his efforts. Justice also was the Big East Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He graduated from West Virginia in 2006 with a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree. Justice and his wife, Casie Coughlin Justice, have one daughter, Juliet Garin

Owls Improve to 9-3 with 87-82 Win Versus FIU in C-USA Opener
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today revealed the club’s cast of goalkeepers for the 2016 season. Brazilian Série A veteran Bruno Cardoso, former Tampa Bay Rowdies netminder Diego Restrepo, and 17 year-old Weston native Matias Reynares have all put pen to paper on contracts with the Strikers. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. “We have three high quality goalkeepers for the upcoming season,” said Head Coach and General Manager Caio Zanardi. “Bruno has experience playing for one of the biggest teams in Brazil, while Restrepo knows the league and brings his own experience and competition for the starting role. I like working with a young player like Matias, who has such great potential and will grow with the help of our goalkeepers coach Ricardo Lopes and by training alongside Bruno and Diego.” Highlighting the list of goalkeepers is Bruno Cardoso, who ends an 18-year career at Brazilian side Palmeiras to sign in Fort Lauderdale. He participated in the top two divisions of Brazilian soccer, as well as in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The 31-year-old will be referred to by his first name and sport the number 1 on his jersey. Bruno got his start with Palmeiras in 1997 at the under-13 level, and signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 in 2000. That same year he was called up to represent Brazil’s U-17 national team. Apart from two loan spells, Bruno has been with Palmeiras his entire career. His trophy cabinet with Palmeiras includes the São Paulo State Championship in 2008, and recognition as the best goalkeeper of the tournament as Palmeiras claimed the Copa do Brasil in 2012. Bruno was also part of the Palmeiras side that won the Série B title in 2013. The São Paulo native gained promotion to the first division in each of his loan spells away from Palmeiras. The first was with Série B champion Portuguesa in 2011, and again with Santa Cruz as runner-up in 2015. Diego Restrepo, 27, joins the Strikers from Venezuelan Primera División side Metropolitanos FC, where he played 12 matches
in 2015. Restrepo suited up for USL expansion side Charlotte Independence earlier in the year following two seasons with Tampa Bay Rowdies. Restrepo joined the Rowdies in 2013, and made 23 NASL appearances in his first season with the club, earning league recognition as Player of the Week three times. An Achilles tendon injury suffered in the Rowdies’ 2014 preseason kept Restrepo out of action for the entire season. The Venezuelan-born goalkeeper grew up in Colombia and moved to South Florida aged 11. Restrepo played at American Heritage School, and later IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He represented the United States at the under-17 level, and took part in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru. Restrepo played college soccer at the University of South Florida and the University of Virginia before signing with América de Cali in 2011 and Deportivo Táchira in 2012. The signings of Bruno and Restrepo are pending clearance of an International Transfer Certificate. Signing his first professional contract is 17-year-old goalkeeper Matias Reynares. Argentine-born Reynares grew up in South Florida, and at the age of 14, left Weston FC to join Defensor Sporting in Uruguay. He spent three years with the Montevideobased club before returning home to turn professional with the Strikers. Reynares is the youngest player to sign for the Fort Lauderdale in the NASL Modern Era (2011-present). The Strikers roster is currently comprised of 17 players, with more joining ahead of the club’s participation in the 2016 Florida Cup. Fort Lauderdale kicks off the Florida Cup on January 10, 2016, against FC Schalke 04 in Orlando, and will face Santa Fe on January 17 in Boca Raton, Fla. Lockhart Stadium will serve as the host of two Florida Cup games. The first is January 13 when Schalke squares off against Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro. One week later, January 20, Brazilian squads Fluminense and Internacional meet. Tickets are on sale now at Strikers.com/FloridaCup.

The new year started off on the right foot for the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team as the Owls downed rival FIU 87-82 to win their fourth in a row and start 1-0 in Conference USA play. The Owls (9-3, 1-0 C-USA) saw a career performance from senior Morgan Robinson, who scored 28 points with the help of 12 free throws. Fellow senior Ali Gorrell tallied 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out four assists. Sasha Cedeno and Kat Wright also reached double-digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The Panthers (2-10, 0-1 C-USA) also saw four players reach double-digit scoring, led by Taylor Shade and Tianah Alvarado with 26 and 22 points, respectively. After an early basket by FAU, the Panthers went on an 8-0 run, then extended the lead to 13-5 at the 6:35 mark of the first quarter.
The Owls responded with a 12-2 run to tie the contest before retaking the lead on a layup by Wright at the 1:02 mark. Shade hit a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to close the first quarter tied at 22. Following a jumper by Wright to open the second quarter, Robinson went on a personal 11-2 run to give FAU its largest lead of the half at 35-26. FIU chipped away at the advantage to cut the lead to 47-42 FAU at the half. An 8-2 run to open the third gave FIU another lead at 50-49 in a quarter that featured six lead changes. Robinson made a three-pointer at the 0:32 mark before Shade answered with a three with just seconds remaining to send the game to the fourth quarter knotted up at 63. With the contest tied for the ninth time at 69, FAU went on a 7-2 run to take a lead the Owls would not relinquish. Robinson and Gorrell combined for 19 of FAU’s 24 fourth-quarter points, including seven free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory. FAU hosts Marshall on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at FAU Arena. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
