FTC lawyer Tara Reinhart said settlement talks with Staples are continuing. The comments buoyed hopes that the merger will go through and boosted Home Depot’s stock price by 5 percent Tuesday.

Black Lives Matter By Zykra Carter Greetings ladies and gentlemen. My name is Zykra Carter, I’m 13 years old in the 8th grade and I attend Village Academy in the City of Delray Beach, where I grew up. I aspire to be a doctor when I grow up. Today, I will explain to you how the Black Lives Matter Movement equates to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream. Whenever I hear the saying, Black Lives Matter, something pops up into my mind. Wasn’t Dr. King trying to say the same thing? I know some of you may

be saying black lives are not the only ones that matter, and that’s what Dr. King thought too. He reminded us that we were all created equal and we have the same rights in society and life. So, why are most of the black lives being taken away? Now I have a question for the young black men…. If you turn on the news today, do you see or hear the following statistics: 30 percent of minorities make up the United States population and 60 percent of that 30 are in prison? Most of the incarcerated people are young

black men! Dr. King not only wanted equal rights for all, but he wanted us, black people, to do better. How can we do that? By stop killing each other, staying in school, and by applying for more jobs. In fact, you can create more jobs by becoming an entrepreneur. As black people who care about each other’s lives, we have to stop killing each other. Instead, we need to love one another as the Lord commanded us to do. Black on black violence is not the

answer. We have to show others that we care about our own lives. We must become advocates for ourselves and demonstrate to others that we deserve the equal rights and treatment given to all citizens in these United States. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted the same things that we want for ourselves. He wanted justice for all - just like we do. He wanted everybody to know that we matter too.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Keep Your Dreams Alive! I went out for breakfast on December 30, 2015, at a favorite Deli near my home. As I sat at a table for two, I immediately noticed the one next to mine, occupied by five elderly ladies who enthusiastically talked more than they ate! I kept overhearing them with interest, while feasting at their joyous interactions. They were displaying a zest for life which was truly contagious! While I enjoyed my food, I kept noticing the consistency of their joyous participation in those friendly exchanges. On more than one occasion I felt like turning to them and showing my appreciation for their laughter and pleasant disposition toward one another. I nearly moved towards them to say something complimentary, yet lacked courage by

fearing being intrusive! When the time came for me to pay my bill, and leave, they were still carrying on their animated conversation. As I stood up to leave, my resolve was renewed to share some encouraging compliments to them. I stopped by their table and simply commented: “Ladies, I really enjoyed seeing the way you are ending the year; I just hope that you take into the new, the same joy and enthusiasm you are displaying here!” They all smiled and several said something appreciative to me, also wishing me a happy new year. As I further thought about that simple incident, I fully reaffirmed in my mind something that I have for long believed, namely, that the pleasant experiences

of any moment should never be limited only to when they occur; they can be brought forward into the next day, the following month, into a new year as well! That was the nature of my warm wishes to those ladies whom I didn’t know. Any pleasant dreams that may be unfulfilled in the course of a given year should not be allowed to die altogether; they can be re-edited, and re-considered for later realization. Possible experiences that might have been close to occur, though they did not, can still be kept alive in one’s mind and be attempted again. Don’t give up so quickly; avoid being discouraged too soon. Good things often come in small installments rather

than all at once. It’s our task to remain on top of every situation, doing what we can and whatever we must, to see that what is truly feasible and advantageous to us is not so easily dismissed or discarded too fast! A life of genuine fulfillment and joy always keeps dreams alive, while also dreaming new dreams; it equally knows how to stretch positive experiences beyond the moment when they first occur. No bad condition in the world or in the nation should ever rob anybody from carrying noble goals into realization, in spite of all the barriers that have to be faced and overcome along the way!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Controversial FAU Professor Fired By CRA News Service

James F. Tracy, the Florida Atlantic University professor who said that the school massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut was an elaborate, staged hoax designed to pass gun-control legislation, has been officially fired, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. University officials told Tracy, a tenured associate professor of communications, of his fate in a Jan. 5 statement. “The effective date of the termination is Jan. 8, 2016,” the note read. “James Tracy was scheduled to teach three classes during the upcoming Spring semester. Alternative instructors will be assigned to teach those classes.” Tracy’s firing comes less than a month after the parents of one of the children killed in the school shooting, accused him of harassment. Lenny and Veronique Pozner alleged in a newspaper opinion piece that after they asked Tracy to remove a photo of their 6-year-old son, Noah, from his outside blog, the professor sent them a certified letter demanding proof that the child ever lived and that they were his parents. He referred to them on the blog as “alleged parents” and accused them of fabricating their son’s death certificate to cash in on the tragedy. “We found this so outrageous and unsettling that we filed a police report for harassment,” they wrote in the letter published in the Sun-Sentinel. “Once Tracy realized we would not respond, he subjected us to ridi-

cule and contempt on his blog, boasting to his readers that the ‘unfulfilled request’ was ‘noteworthy’ because we had used copyright claims to ‘thwart continued research of the Sandy Hook massacre event.’ ” Tracy declined requests for comment. His lawyer, Tom Johnson of Brandon, also would not discuss the case because of a lawsuit, according to published reports. Tracy, 50, drew criticism nationally shortly after the December 2012 tragedy when he claimed on a blog that the Newtown shooting was staged. He also suggested that other episodes of violence, including the slaying of parishioners at a Bible study in Charleston, S.C., the Boston Marathon bombing and San Bernardino, California, shooting, also were fake. He has maintained on his blog and radio interviews, that the Newtown massacre may have been carried out by “crisis actors” employed by the Obama administration. Twenty-seven people – mostly young children - were shot and killed by a gunman who then took his own life in the schoolhouse. Because of Tracy’s tenured status, it was difficult for the university to fire him. Officials however did so using a technicality - failing to provide paperwork about outside employment or “professional activity,” which is required of all faculty members. Tracy, who writes the blog and hosts a weekly radio show, had not filed such documents for three consecutive years, the school’s officials said.

Dr. Evan Hasson: Your Specific Chiropractor for Your Specific Relief

By: Alyssa Lamp

A lack of communication with your body can lead to harmful effects, which can then lead to diseases and pain throughout the whole body. In Dr. Evan Hasson’s Specific Chiropractic office, he corrects the fundamental cause of these dysfunctions. He specializes on the upper neck and realigning the spine to relieve stress on your everyday life without any popping or twisting of the neck.

A Boca Raton native through and through, Dr. Hasson is a graduate of Boca Raton Community High School, and received his Biological Science degree from Florida Atlantic University, before going to Palmer College of Chiropractic for his Doctorate. “I grew up here,” says Dr. Hasson, that’s why he chose to build his practice here. At the age of sixteen, Dr. Hasson dove right into a pharmacy position. “I wanted to be apart of something bigger than myself; I wanted to help people,” Dr. Hasson says. After a few years of working in the pharmacy, Dr. Hasson found out his manager had Type 2 Diabetes. When questioned why he was not taking medication his manager responded, “I am not taking that poison! My doctor said I can fix this myself with some exercise and eating right!” After hearing this, Dr. Hasson changed his mind on his future. Changing his mind was not an easy task, Dr. Hasson says he went home that night and discussed different paths with his wife.

They pulled out a binder he had from school with different options and went over all of them. He then found Chiropractic and later on went to school for it. He is now a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. While in college he received many awards like, Most Outstanding Future Alumni, and Leadership Service Achievement Award as Student Class Representative. He now has his own practice and is working to help people like he has always wanted to. He says, “We have had people with diagnoses of Fibromyalgia, asthma, IBS, migraines/headaches, anxiety, eczema, depression, uterine cysts, tinnitus, “foggy brain”, scoliosis, allergies, and of course the ever so common, and in most cases very fixable, neck and back pain.” Dr. Hasson also says, “We do not make claims to cure any disease. We do not cure diseases. We remove the obstructions between your brain and body to help facilitate health.” For first time patients, his office offers a free consultation, which includes a discussion with the doctor and also an X-Ray, to try and figure out what can be done. Patients do not have to worry about all the insurance hassle, because Dr. Hasson does not accept insurances. Instead, you can choose to do an affordable payment by visit or create a monthly payment with the office. Also, he recently created a student discount, cutting payments in half for col-

lege students, which allows students to go see him and not have to worry about breaking their bank. Many patients are raving about Dr. Hasson’s work. One patient, Dawn A., says, “I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Hasson. I came to him seeking chiropractic care because I had nowhere else to turn. I had been suffering from almost daily migraines, unexplainable weight gain, and uncontrolled menstrual cycles. Dr. Hasson was able to change my quality of life from a very deplorable outlook to one that makes me excited to get up in the morning. There are not enough good things that I can say about him.” I can also say from experience, Dr. Hasson is a miracle worker. I went into his office with a sinus infection and a lot of pain in my neck. After my first examination and XRay, he saw my spine was starting to twist. Dr. Hasson corrected the problem and I have not felt sick since. The Boca Chamber of Commerce will be at The Specific Chiropractic office on January 20th and Dr. Evan Hasson and his family would like to invite everyone to join them there for the ribbon cutting ceremony and to celebrate the future of his mission. Specific Chiropractic is also one of three places that are accepting items for Forgotten Soldiers Outreach “We Care” packages. His office can be located at One W. Camino Real Suite 111, Boca Raton, FL 33432. In East Boca Raton across the street from The Fresh Market.

Footlighters of South Florida To Honor Trini Lopez As 2016 “Entertainer Of Year”

The Footlighters Club of South Florida will transform Valentine’s Day 2016 into “ValenTrini Day” when it honors singer, musician and actor Trini Lopez with its Entertainer of the Year Award. An all-star tribute is planned for the performer who rocked the music world with

plenty of hits during the 1960s and 1970s, and created two classic guitars for Gibson that are considered classics today. The spectacular will be held Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 starting at 6 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, FL 33314. In addition to receiving Entertainer of the Year honors, Lopez will be presented with the Connie Francis Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the famed vocalist whose hit records included “Stupid Cupid,” “Who’s Sorry Now?” “Mama” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” Connie is scheduled to attend to present the awards. “Ever since this all-star tribute was announced, the response has been overwhelming,” said Footlighters of South Florida President Errol Dante. In addition to honoring Trini Lopez, the event will also be a fundraiser for the Footlighters Foundation for Indigent Entertainers and Musicians. That same evening, the “Footlighter of the Year” Award will be presented to Stanley Seidenberg. He has been the talent coordinator for a number of club events, including the tribute to Trini Lopez.

On December 29, 2015 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a shooting at U-Park Apartments, 135 NW 20th Street. Arriving officers found the victim, Nicholas Acosta, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died later that evening. On December 30, 2015, Boca Raton detectives arrested Donovan Malik Henry and charged him with first-degree murder and robbery with

a firearm. The investigation into the telephone records of Donovan Henry revealed multiple phone numbers from the day of the murder. One of the numbers was registered to a Rodrick Woods. Woods’ physical description matches a suspect who was captured on video surveillance, following Henry into the University Park Apartment shortly before the shooting. Woods was also seen running from the apartment complex after the shooting. Video footage shows a distinctive tattoo on Woods’ arm. Woods’ phone records place him in the area of University Park Apartments at the time of the murder. A cooperating witness identified Woods from surveillance video. Detectives charged Rodrick Woods with first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. Woods was arrested in MiamiDade County on Monday, January 11, 2016. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming. If you have information about this crime, please call Detective Scott Hanley or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

Village Academy Student Wins Contest, Speaks at MLK Events By CRA News Service

As residents prepare for MLK Day events around the City this weekend, one middle school student is bracing for her moment in the spotlight. Zykra Carter has been fine tuning her speech, which she will deliver at three events on Sunday and Monday. “I am excited,” said Carter, 13, an eighthgrader at Village Academy in Delray Beach. “I am really looking forward to this.” Carter bested 16 other students from other District schools in the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory contest. The honor was a surprise to her, considering she submitted her entry one day before the deadline. “My mentor would always say, ‘In baseball you can’t win unless you take a swing,’” Carter said. “If I did not apply enter I could not win. I am so glad I entered.” Contestants had to submit a 250-word essay on the topic, “How does the Black Lives Matter Movement Relates to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream?” A panel of judges evaluated the speeches on quality, content, persuasiveness, style, organization and creativity. “Her entry was so impressive,” said Robert Dodd, program manager for the KOP Mentoring Network, which organized the event. “It was so conversational. It was obvious she put her heart into it.” January 15 - 21, 2015

Carter will speak at the ecumenical service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Christ Missionary Baptist Church, 125 SW 8th St; on Monday at the 8:30 a.m. breakfast at the Delray Beach Golf Club, 2200 Highland Ave., and at 3:30 p.m. at Pompey Park Community Center. Carter’s prizes include a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, a scholarship to the South Florida Oratorical Academy and a trip to a youth leadership conference in Miami in May. The contest is held to help develop participants reading, researching, writing and public speaking skills, organizers said. Other objectives of the contest include developing leadership skills and the ability to think and speak clearly, as well as to prepare contestants for life beyond high school. “This is a great thing for the students and for this community to celebrate,” Dodd said. “This is an effort to challenge them and prick their social consciousness beyond what they do in school. These are the joys of mentoring that make a difference in lives of the children.” KOP is a nonprofit organization that has been providing life skills and character building training for local youth ages 7 to 17 since 1991. Over the years, the organization has sponsored the Black History Brain Bowl among other educational programs. For more information, call 561-716-3655.

Girls Corralled In “Mustang”

“Mustang” is a curious name for a movie that is not about a horse or a car, but five young sisters living in the repressive Islamic culture of Turkey. The story, written by director Deniz Gamze Erugven with Alice Winocour, begins on a summer afternoon when the five sisters are let out of school with a group of friends. They go to the beach and begin to frolic in the water, fully clothed. Some local busybody witnesses the girls and boys playing together, and concludes they were up to no good. The girls have no mother, but they live with their grandmother (Nihal G. Koldas), who is very strict. When Grandma receives word the girls may have been misbehaving with boys, she is

furious. Even more furious is the girls’ father (Ayberk Pekcan), who decides the girls should be prisoners in their own house until they can be married off. The dad goes to the extent of welding bars on the windows. Is it any wonder the girls rebel against such oppression? For those of us who are not familiar with strict Islamic living, its systematic abuse and neglect of women and girls is hard to understand. I will be the first to admit I do not understand. But since it is a religion, I really have no right to criticize. But the point of this story is that these girls did not choose to live this way. It was forced upon them, and that is just not right. First Ever New Years Eve Billy Joel The Boca Raton Tribune Performance at BB&T Photos by Rosa Cavalcanti

Billy Joel performed his first ever New Years Eve concert at BB&T center in Sunrise last Thursday, Dec 31st to a sold out and enthusiastic crowd. After 40 years of performing Billy Joel can still bring joy to the crowd. Fantastic performance by the Piano Man, definitely a great way to celebrate the start of the new year! The show started at 10.30pm followed by performance of the talented Gavin Degraw.

columnists FAITH By Robert J. Tamasy

Fear Not In The Face Of Fearful Factors One of the most common emotions is fear. Psychologists have a term for our reaction to circumstances we perceive as threatening. It is called the "fight or flight" response. We either confront the persons or situations that threaten us in some way, or we flee, seeking to avoid or even escape potential calamity. There is, however, a third response, one we are not likely to hear recommended by supposed experts on the human psyche. This reaction is simply to "fear not." Not long ago I heard a speaker from the west African nation of Sierra Leone who noted the words "fear not" appear in the Bible 365 times, seemingly one for every day in the calendar year. Since people in Sierra Leone have experienced any number of adversities in recent years, ranging from economic struggles to outbreaks of the Ebola virus to civil discord, the speaker was well-schooled in the subject of fear. And yet he repeatedly declared his determination to follow the exhortation to "fear not" - "do not be afraid." But what about the environment where we spend much of our time, the business and professional world? It is volatile, unpredictable, and can turn a prince into a pauper virtually overnight. Those possessing an entrepreneurial spirit know starting a business is risky. In the corporate world, executives and managers are constantly under pressure to produce; failure to do so can result in having to pack up their offices and find employment elsewhere. Ambitious deadlines often cause considerable anxiety; fear arises when those deadlines seem unrealistic or unattainable. When

a key client or customer becomes unhappy with our products or services, we fear losing their business, even if their reasons for dissatisfaction are beyond our control. Potential failure lurks at every corner. So how can we "fear not?" Humanly speaking, this is difficult, if not impossible. But since the command comes from God, it seems accompanied by His promise to provide what we need during difficult times. Here are examples: Rely on God's presence. As David was preparing to surrender the leadership of Israel, he exhorted his son Solomon, his successor as king, "...'Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work...is finished'" (1 Chronicles 28:20). Depend on God's power. When trouble arrives, we are tempted to deal with it in our ability and strength alone. God tells us, however, to rely on Him and His resources. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10). Trust in God's purpose and plans. When unexpected setbacks occur, we wonder whether God cares - or if He is even aware. He promises He does know, and does care. He is never caught off guard by times of adversity. "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'" (Jeremiah 29:11).

Boca Raton Set To Host Three-Time World Cup Champions in March

The 2015 Women’s FIFA World Cup Champions are heading back to Boca Raton in March alongside England, France, and Germany as part of the SheBelieves Cup. The four-team international tournament, which features four of the top five ranked women’s national teams in the world, will be held from March 3 until the 9th in Tampa Bay, Nashville, and closing out the Tournament in Boca Raton.

The SheBelieves Cup is a showcase event for the campaign, which will continue to spread its positive message to young women

and girls. Tickets for all three doubleheaders go on sale to the public Friday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. local time through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers in the local venue areas. Tickets are not sold at either Raymond James Stadium or FAU Stadium except on the day of the event.

The winner of the tournament will be based on total points (three for a win, one for a tie), with the first tie-breaker being overall goal difference, followed by most total tournament goals scored, then headto-head result and lastly, FIFA Ranking if necessary. The USA is currently first in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. Germany is ranked second, France is third and England is fifth. The USA, Germany and England all advanced to semifinals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with Germany beating France in a quarterfinal penalty kick shootout to earn its spot in the last four. “When I took this job, one of my main objectives was to play the best teams in the world during our preparation periods and you can’t ask for better matches,” said Ellis. “This is another sign of U.S. Soccer’s dedication to the women’s game to organize a tournament like this, which will bring some of the world’s best teams and players to the USA. To get the chance to play these great teams on home soil is a treat for our fans and extremely valuable in the further evolution of our team. These are the kinds of games where you get tested all over the field and can really evaluate players and learn a lot about ourselves.”

All three matches carry some significant storylines for the USA. The meeting with Germany will be the first since the epic 2015 Women’s World Cup semifinal, a 2-0 U.S. victory. The meeting with France will be the first since the 2015 Algarve Cup championship game, a 2-0 U.S. win that reversed a 2-0 loss in the teams’ first match of 2015. The meeting with England will be the first since the USA’s narrow 1-0 victory in Milton Keynes, England in early February of last year that sparked a 24-game unbeaten streak which included the run to the World Cup title. In addition, the other matches carry tremendous intrigue with Germany facing France in a rematch of their Women’s World Cup quarterfinal, and England taking on Germany, the team it defeated in the third-place match of the Women’s World Cup. THE 2015 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, Carli Llyod, is expected to be among the 25 Ellis call on for the tournament. The US Women’s National team has played five matches in Boca Raton, including two at FAU Stadium, a 4-1 win versus China PR in 2012, and a 7-0 victory over Russia in 2014.
