“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” - Luke 6:35-36 NIV

plex spreadsheets from anywhere. Apple Pencil expands the power of Multi-Touch on iPad and opens new possibilities for creative learners by providing students with a bigger, more dynamic canvas to capture ideas as notes, sketches or diagrams. "iPad Pro, its accessories and the next generation of education-focused apps will make learning even more relevant to the world students live in," adds Lynn Chief Information Officer Chris Boniforti. "This immersive, versatile technology also provides access to top-notch content and can replace bulky desktop devices to save space and allow Lynn to convert computer labs into interactive, mobile workspaces—places that inspire creativity and foster collaboration." iPad Pro also supports Lynn's ongoing efforts to create a more affordable education, eliminating personal computer costs and saving students money through apps and e-books that are more cost-effective, timely
and relevant than traditional textbooks and support materials. iPad Pro provides even greater flexibility, too. Whether studying aviation, design or music, students now can use one device for writing papers, taking notes with Apple Pencil, creating videos that demonstrate learning, completing indepth projects outside the classroom and much more. "iPad Pro enhances the entire music-making experience," shares Lynn Conservatory of Music student and violinist Kristen Seto as she uses iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for the first time to compose her own notes. "It's mobile so it's there when creativity strikes— plus it's just like writing music on paper!" Recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, Lynn first implemented Apple technology in 2013 to deliver its nationally praised core curriculum. iPad mini™ replaced traditional books, saving students up to 90 percent on core curriculum textbook costs, and provided greater accessibility with unified student-to-teacher communication, content sharing and learning applications.

How Sincere are those words Uttered During MLK Observances? I love this time of the year. Not so much because I get to sport my prized collection of sweaters or New England Patriots and Boston Celtics jackets but because of the holiday. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is by far the most meaningful holiday for me. It is a time when, like Dr. King, I get to see something I relish: unity among all people. Except for when we have the funeral service of a prominent person in town, the MLK holiday weekend is the only time I can recall attending an ecumenical service in town – at least in southern Palm Beach County. Yes, I see a diverse audience at City Commission meetings and a handful of other public gatherings but it is the only time I recall when we have people of all creed, races and nationality come together on one accord for one purpose. This year was no different. I spent the weekend crisscrossing the city and Boynton Beach, attending events to honor the slain Civil Rights icon, who would have
turned 85 this year. There were people of all walks of life, all ages and ethnicities as well at every event. I was somewhat troubled though that the only elected city officials I saw this weekend were Mayor Cary Glickstein of Delray Beach and City Commissioner Jordana L. Jarjura. In fact, despite a hectic calendar on both days, Mayor Glickstein was present at three events in the city. Commissioner Jarjura attended the Martin Luther King, Jr., breakfast at the Golf Club. Each year, I end the weekend thinking about the poignant messages and wondering about the sincerity of the speakers – are these just mere rhetorical words, joined together to entertain an audience and provide a feel good effect? Are these speakers, especially those who are in positions of evoking change, truly committed to carrying out Dr. King’s dream? More importantly, I ask myself, how much progress have we made in reaching his dream of people living as one? N. Michael Norwood, chairman of Boyn-
ton Beach’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration committee, said it best: the need is now greater than ever for us to unite as a community to move forward in unity. “Unity does not come easily, but only through hard work and commitment. We cannot allow ourselves to be comfortable celebrating the memory of Dr. King without remembering how he died,” Norwood said. “His death was an attempt to stop progress of civil and human rights. The way we honor him, is to work towards his goal of equal rights and equal treatment for all people, regardless of race, creed, or color. We are truly living the dream in love peace and unity.” I am truly troubled by the pace at which we are pursuing this dream. While things are not perfect as it relates to equality and unity, we are certainly a lot better off than we were in 1963. And while segregation is no longer legal, voting rights are still being suppressed in some places and education opportunities are not equal.
At a banquet Sunday night, Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa said we have made some progress. But as we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, have we made the kind of progress that he would have recognized as significant or sufficient enough versus where we are today? He certainly pricked the audience’s social consciousness when he quoted Dr. King on white moderates who were not prepared for the dream. Dr. King would often say his Christian brothers and sisters, particular the leaders - the ministers - were too moderate. “They kept saying, ‘It’s not the right time,’ and then he would say, ‘If not now when?’” Avossa said. He vowed to address one piece of the dream – the high rate of suspension of black boys in the District. “I want to light a fire under all of us, in our hearts and in our belly that we need to do a better job for our kids,” he said. “They are waiting for us [to take action] and they can’t be patient.”
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Move Ahead With Wise Plans! Not only at the start of a new year, but at all times, learn to organize your activities so as to reach the desired objectives you’ve formulated. Early on in life I quickly learned that if you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail. The outcomes of any endeavor never show the opposite of what you carefully planned, or totally failed to do. What you sow, you reap in great quantities; what is not sown shall have no harvest! Having said all that, I should also add that a healthy measure of spontaneity must always be present in all you attempt. There are times when one may plan well but, in the process of taking the steps toward implementing those plans, new possibilities arise, greater ideas emerge, better routes open up!
Don’t ignore them, but see how and where they may be added to your plans! Furthermore, along with spontaneity, there needs to be consistent flexibility as well. These two elements may even be the two sides of the same coin. Some people tend to be too rigid in their pursuits that they don’t allow any deviation from what they had previously devised; yet it’s in situations like these that flexibility may be soundly exercised for a better outcome! Therefore, even when looking at a map, one can discover something new which had always been there though it was missed completely when the original plans were being established! In addition, the courses of action envisioned hopefully are to succeed
in all that has been dreamed about, and planned accordingly for maximum results. Just recently, at lunch with a friend of mine, he shared an accurate perspective about someone whom we both know well. Without any malice, the comment was made about that male individual that he plans everything, including his failures. In truth, these are not plans but, rather, a self-fulfilling prophecy, due to lack of confidence and a positive expectation! Failures may be viewed as possibilities, but should not be planned, thus making them inescapable! The idea dominating that person’s planning, indicated that he had constructed routes not only to take him to the very best he wishes for his life, but also parallel path-
ways which could only end in a cul-de-sac, allowing him no way out, or steps that would take him into distress and failure, which could and should be totally avoided, had he planned the right way! Although a plan you make is fully yours, its implementation is greatly improved when trusted friends are consulted and their recommendations are considered, and taken seriously even with modifications you consent to make. Just don’t let life happen to you; plan its direction carefully and proceed in the routes that shall ensure the healthy outcomes you are after!

There is a New Doctor in Town and He is Doing Something Different
By Alyssa Lamp
In Dr. Hasson’s Specific Chiropractic office, he corrects the fundamental cause of these dysfunctions. He holds certifications in techniques to correct vertebral subluxations specifically located in the upper neck. This area of the spine requires great focus to correct and potentially contributes to millions of health conditions from headaches, allergies and depression to IBS, sciatica, and irritability.
A Boca Raton native through and through, Dr. Hasson is a graduate of Boca Raton Community High School and received his Biological Science degree from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Hasson continued his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic where he earned his Doctorate. At the age of sixteen, Dr. Hasson dove right into a pharmacy position. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself; I wanted to help people.” After several years of working in the pharmacy, Dr. Hasson had a life changing conversation with his coworker and at the time, the head Pharmacist. The pharmacist shared his diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, and when questioned why he was not taking his medication, the pharmacist responded, “I am not taking that poison! I can fix this myself with some exercise and eating right!” After hearing this, Dr. Hasson began to change his mind on his future. Changing his mind was not an easy task. Dr. Hasson went home that night and discussed different paths with his future wife. They pulled out a binder she had from her undergrad, with different options for careers in the health service field and went over all of them. After further research and understanding, Dr. Hasson found Chiropractic and later on went to school for it. While at Palmer, he received many awards, Most Outstanding Future Alumni, and
son’s work. One patient, Dawn A., says, “I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Hasson. I came to him seeking chiropractic care because I had nowhere else to turn. I had been suffering from almost daily migraines, unexplainable weight gain, and uncontrolled menstrual cycles. Dr. Hasson was able to change my quality of life from a very deplorable outlook to one that makes me excited to get up in the morning. There are not enough good things that I can say about him.” I can also say from experience, Dr. Hasson is a miracle worker. I went into his office with a sinus infection and a lot of pain in my neck. After my first examination and XRay, he saw my spine was starting to twist. Dr. Hasson corrected the problem and I have not felt sick since. The Boca Chamber of Commerce will be at The Specific Chiropractic office on January 20th and Dr. Evan Hasson and his family would like to invite everyone to join them for the ribbon cutting ceremony and to celebrate the future of his mission. Specific Chiropractic is also one of three places that are accepting items for Forgotten Soldiers Outreach “We Care” packages. His office can be located at One W. Camino Real Suite 111, Boca Raton, FL 33432. In East Boca Raton across the street from The Fresh Market.

Leadership Service Achievement Award as Student Class Representative. He is now a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. At Specific Chiropractic of Boca Raton, Dr. Hasson is now seeing patients with various types of problems, “We have had people with diagnoses of fibromyalgia, asthma, IBS, migraines/headaches, anxiety, eczema, depression, uterine cysts, tinnitus, “foggy brain”, scoliosis, allergies, neck and back pain. We do not make claims to cure or treat any diseases. We do not cure diseases. We remove the obstructions between your brain and body to help facilitate health, by doing this we expect positive outcomes for almost every patient” Dr. Hasson provides complimentary consultations, which includes a discussion about you, your history, and how he may be able to help. Dr. Hasson has created a concierge type of practice designed to work without the restrictive barriers of insurance. “Having your neck and back examined regularly and adjusted as needed is a part of life – just like your car needs an oil change, or an alignment, your body needs tuning as well. We created a system for you and your family to experience Specific Chiropractic in efforts to help prevent future discomfort, pain, sickness, and disease.” Many patients are raving about Dr. Has-

An Excellent Production of “South Pacific”
“South Pacific” has been part of my DNA since age 9, when we first saw it at Coconut Grove Playhouse with Betsy Palmer as Nellie Forbush. The production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic runs through Feb. 14 at the Wick Theatre, 7901 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton. I also saw “South Pacific” with someone I love, which only enhanced the experience. “South Pacific” is all about love under duress in an exotic location. It’s during World War II on two remote islands in the French Polynesian South Pacific. Emile De Beque (Nat Chandler) is a French expatriate who fled his country after he killed a man in what he considered to be a justifiable homicide. Nellie Forbush (Adrianne Hick) is a self-described “hick from the sticks” of Arkansas and a Navy nurse. Nellie is also a “Cockeyed Optimist” as she sings in her first song with Emile De Beque. There is a secondary romance going on, between Lt. Cable (Marc Koeck) and Liat (Jen Chia) the beautiful daughter of local Polynesian entrepreneur Bloody Mary (Amy Jo Phillips). Bloody Mary wants the best for her daughter, and she sees Lt. Cable as her ticket to ride. Additional comic relief is delivered by Michael Iannucci as seaman Luther Billis. You can’t have love without conflict. In the case of both Nellie and Lt. Cable there are inherent prejudices. “South Pacific’ has a strong message
Brunch at The Woods My travels this week took me up to Port St. Lucie where I participated in a Red Hat Garage sale selling some ball gowns, red hats and clothes. After that Bob and I headed over to Jupiter to Tiger Wood’s new restaurant, The Woods in the Harbourside Plaza shopping center. A very impressive restaurant with a great sports bar and an awesome wall of wine. Food was very delicious, we feasted on Chicken Piccata and Linguine for me and Fusilli Bolognese for Bob. Very delicious. Dessert consisted of a huge blue cotton candy and a delicious chocolate mousse cake.

on racial prejudice, especially considering it was written in 1949 by Oscar Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, who directed the original Broadway production. I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Logan when he was artist-in-residence at FAU. Logan was from Texarkana, Texas, but raised in Mansfield, Louisiana in the Deep South. Racial prejudice is brought up in the brilliantly ironic song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught,” sung by Lt. Cable. But as I said at the outset, “South Pacific” is about love; romantic love, with all the joy and pain that entails. The most famous song in “South Pacific” is “Some Enchanted Evening,” but my favorite is “This Nearly Was Mine,” sung by Emile De Beque. Nat Chandler has the requisite rich baritone for that song, but moreover he was the maturity and experience to invest the words with the proper gravity and sorrow. As good as Adrianne Hick, Amy Jo Phillip and Marc Koeck are, this is Nat Chandler’s showcase. I think it is the best performance of Emile De Beque since I saw Robert Goulet do the role at Parker Playhouse in 1995. Kudos to director Norb Joerder and musical director Michael Urusua (though the music is recorded), this is a most excellent production of a timeless American Musical classic. Tickets are $85. Call 561-995-2333 or go to www.thewick.org.
Shen Yun at The Broward Center My friend, Evalyn David and I went to see the Chinese show Shen Yun at the Broward Center this week. The show was so awesome and spectacular. The costumes and scenery took your breath away. A huge cast of dancers and acrobats held your attention every minute of the show. The movie’s on the screen came to life with dancers coming up from the screen. Very Beautiful for sure. After we kept the Chinese theme going with dinner at Silver Pond in Fort Lauderdale where we feasted on Seafood Noodle Soup, Lobster in Garlic Sauce, and Yin Yang Fried Rice, consisting of shrimp and rice and chicken and rice. Very Very Yummy!

Woman on Hard Time, Prayed Then Robbed Subway Shop
By CRA News Service
A woman who allegedly told police she was on hard times and desperate for cash, walked into a Subway restaurant, went into the bathroom and prayed then walked out and robbed the store at gunpoint, police said. Kiara Jaleesa Hill of 1350 N Dixie Highway, Boca Raton, also tried to get away in a car with switched tags, according to a police report.
She “said the gun belonged to her brother and she switched tags on the car so she couldn’t be identified if someone saw her driving away,” police wrote in a report. Police charged Hill with robbery with a deadly weapon and a tag not assigned. Officers said Hill walked into the Subway sandwich shop at 489 NE 20th Street Wednesday, Jan. 13 around 9:30 p.m. and went to the bathroom. She came out shortly after pointing a gun at the manager and demanded money, officers said. The manager ran from the store. It was not clear whether she gave the suspect any cash. An officer on a traffic stop nearby saw the manager approaching him and “yelling that she had just been robbed,” police said. The manager pointed to a woman walking down the street as the suspect. The officer approached Hill and ordered her to stop. But she ignored him and continued walking toward her car, police said. Two witnesses then yelled to the officer that it appeared Hill had a gun. “The officer drew his weapon and ordered [Hill] out of the vehicle,” according to the report. Police arrested her and found the BB gun in her car. Officers also determined the tag on the car was not the registered tag. The assigned tag was found in the trunk.

The Boca Raton Tribune
columnists FAITH By Robert J. Tamasy
When Corporate And Personal Values Clash When an international media corporation acquired the community newspaper where I worked as editor, I was given additional responsibilities as publisher, succeeding the former owner who had left the company. In this expanded role I not only had oversight for the editorial operations of the newspaper, but also was required to interface with advertisers and the staff that operated our printing press. In the printing business, presses are costly capital investments, so to maintain profitability they must be kept in use as much as possible. For when our newspapers were not being printed, the company would seek printing contracts for other publications to ensure our press and the pressmen remained busy. My role was not to solicit outside printing projects or to oversee them, but the press operators would keep me informed about what they were working on. One afternoon a pressman came into my office and showed me a periodical that was being printed. “Have you seen this?” he asked.

Looking through it, I could see the content of this publication was unlike anything we had done before and did not align with the values of the small community where our business had been held in high esteem over the years. My first thought, knowing how word quickly spreads in a small, everyoneknows-everyone community like ours, was how residents, civic leaders and our loyal advertisers would respond if they discovered such a project was being produced. My second thought was that the message of this publication conflicted with my personal values as well. “Well, what do you think?” the press foreman asked, obviously uncomfortable with the content of the publication he was required to print. I knew something needed to be done. But what? It was not my responsibility to judge the content of materials printed on our local press; my job was to make sure the work was completed to the satisfaction of the customer.

sports FAU Men’s Soccer Captain Takes on the Big Leagues in Off-Season
By Stephanie Fonseca
Braxton Fuster, now captain and defensive center back of the FAU Men’s soccer team, despite rocky start as a child finds his place on the soccer field. “My parents tried putting me in every sport,” says Fuster, “I would always be benched and end up picking grass, until my parents put me in soccer.” At the age of 9, Braxton’s parents finally found a sport that their son could actually get play time in. Little did they know that he would become a pillar in the back for the soccer teams he would eventually played on. At 11, Braxton started his travel soccer
career at the no longer existent Boynton Beach Tigers, which lead to his start on American Heritage of Delray’s soccer team his freshman year. As a defensive center back his freshman year, he finally came to the realization that he might continue on playing the game of soccer when he scored a decisive goal in the State Cup. “That feeling is just a high that confirms that that is your place,” Fuster explains. But what kept motivating him to consider playing college ball was winning a State Championship with American Heritage. Fuster reminisces on yet another crucial goal when he played for Team Boca’s U-18 team where he was also captain and scored in the last ten minutes of the game against the defending National Champions. “There was ten minutes left, the ball got played over the top, and I shot it on a volley; first touch in the top corner of the goal,” Fuster recalls. “That goal put us back in the game, and we ended up winning 3-2.” Fuster ended up pursuing soccer in college, where he’s been a starter since freshman year for the FAU Owls. “He stood out in the transitional period,” says Coach Kos, FAU Men’s soccer head coach. Coach Kos points out that Fuster was was ready to step in and step up to the physical and mental demands of Division 1 college soccer. “He always brought energy and a level of competition, be it in practice or a game,” says
Coach Kos. But in the pursuit of the possibility of playing professional soccer, the opportunity arose at the end of his Sophomore year. Coach Marcelo Castillo of the Boca Raton Football Club, a semi-professional team, reached out to Coach Kos for recommendations for players he believed could be beneficial to the team. Fuster was named between others in the group who later tried out for Boca FC during FAU’s off-season. “He came, tried out, and we liked what we saw and signed him to the amature contract,” said Boca FC’s Coach Castillo in an interview. According to NCAA regulation, all athletes taking part in collegiate sports are not allowed to compete at the college level if they maintain a professional status. For this reason Fuster and any players in the semi-professional league must sign amature contracts. Coach Castillo goes on to point out how Fuster will go down in Boca FC’s history by making the first goal ever in the team’s inaugural season. Fuster went on and started every game during the official season and helped Boca FC win the regular season title in the American Premier Soccer League. “I‘ve seen him evolve from a timid player to one who is a lot more confident in his skills and abilities,” says his best friend and teammate, David Adejunmobi, who has played with Fuster since they were 14.
Adejunmobi, who also plays on Boca FC and on FAU’s soccer team, points out that Fuster’s strength is in his communication in the back line and how he always seeks to do his best for the team. “He’s not always right but he tries his best,” says Adejunmobi. His friend and teammate Owen McCorkle, a Junior Exercise Science major and defensive wing for the FAU Men’s team, says “I’ve played with a lot of good players but I can say that Braxton is one of the best leaders I’ve had.” McCorkle continues, “He gets in every play, he stands up for his teammates and plays with personality.” From Coach Kos to Coach Castillo, to his teammates who have shared the field with him in the collegiate team and semi-professional team, their input of his strengths as a player is unanimous. They believe that his quick decision making and leadership skills are what makes him a good player and as Coach Castillo would point out his cerebral way of reading situations is what makes him stand out. Mirroring his game on John Terry, the center back for Chelsea FC, Fuster hopes to go professional once he graduates as a History major from FAU. Fuster agrees with his teammates and mentors that an area that he can improve on is on the game’s tactics and for him to be more tact minded. However when asking McCorkle one thing Fuster can work on he jokingly replied, “His looks.”
Boca Raton FC To Face Aromas Cafe FC in Final Round Of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Tournament
Earlier this month, Boca Raton Football Club found out who the team standing in their way of a berth in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Aromas Café FC, of the SOCA Adult League, will play Boca Raton FC on April 3 in Charlottesville, Virginia in the final round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup January 22 - 28, 2016
qualifying tournament. The remaining 14 teams in the open division competition, which began with teams across the country from the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA), US Club Soccer and the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), will be narrowed down to eight after six games and
two byes were announced. The six matchups were made purely on a regional basis to minimize travel with the two teams who were the furthest away from the nearest potential opponent receiving byes. Those two teams were US Club Soccer’s San Francisco City FC and the Boulder, Colo.-based Harpo’s FC from the USSSA. Those two teams have now qualified for the 103rd edition of the US Open Cup that is scheduled to begin around May 11. Both San Francisco City and Harpo’s FC will be making their second consecutive appearance in the tournament. The winners of the six games that are scheduled to take place the weekend of April 2-3, will join those two teams in the US Open Cup. Boca Raton FC had to defeat a pair of fellow APSL teams to advance to the final round. After a 2-1 win over Real Miami CF on Oct. 25, it took penalty kicks to get past Uruguay Kendall on Nov. 22. After a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, the match was decided from the penalty spot and Boca Raton was victorious by a score of 5-4.

Aromas Cafe FC had a little more variety in their path to Round 3, but they were able to pick up a pair of 3-1 wins at home to advance. First, they hosted the Tartan Devils Oak Avalon from the Greater Pittsburgh Soccer League on Oct. 17, followed by another home win over three-time US Open Cup qualifying Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC, who are based in Maryland. Aromas Café FC has some recent success as the team has toured regionally playing friendlies and participating in tournaments where they have consistently been the Champions or finalist. “They are a quality team with quality players,” says head coach Marcelo Castillo. “I’m excited for the opportunity to take on another fellow newcomer to the US Open Cup circuit.” Boca Raton FC will have a myriad of friendlies in preparation to the big match versus Aroma Café FC, which starts on Saturday, January 23 with a matchup versus NASL-side Miami FC at St. Thomas University.

Late Strikers Surge Falls Short In 2-1 Loss To Santa Fe
Strikers midfielder PC scored from a free kick with ten minutes remaining to spark a late surge as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers fell 2-1 to Colombian side Independiente Santa Fe on Sunday evening at FAU Stadium to close out the club’s participation in the Florida Cup. Fort Lauderdale couldn’t muster the equalizer to cancel out first half strikes from Róbinson Zapata and Leyvin Balanta. The match got off on the wrong foot for the Strikers as Santa Fe was awarded a penalty kick in just the third minute of the match. Trialist Andre Skiadas was adjudged to have tripped a player running into the box. Colombian goalkeeper Zapata took the spot kick, sending his counterpart Bruno Cardoso the wrong direction to open the scoring. Santa Fe missed a penalty in second half as Oscar Perez fired over the bar from 12 yards out in the 78th minute. A penalty shout for the Strikers fell on deaf ears as PC took a tumble in the box toward the
end of the first half. Fort Lauderdale went close to equalizing in the sixth minute on an Adrianinho freekick. The midfielder’s curling ball to the far post was redirected toward goal by a teammate, but was cleared off the line by a Santa Fe defender. The Lions doubled their lead shortly after the half-hour mark when Balanta pounced on a rebound after Strikers goalkeeper Bruno stopped Carlos Ibargüen on a oneon-one. Leading 2-0, Santa Fe took to the pitch for the second half with an entirely different eleven. The Strikers made just one change at the half, swapping one trialist for another as Paulo Cesar replaced Skiadas. Several other players were introduced throughout as head coach and general manager tested his roster. Geison Moura had two near misses for the Strikers just seconds apart. First, the winger struck a full volley from the top of the box that was denied by the outstretched fingers of the goalkeeper. His header on the ensuing corner kick in the 59th minute struck the crossbar at the far post. The Strikers got the breakthrough they needed with ten minutes remaining in the match on a set piece goal courtesy of PC from more than 25 yards out. The goal sparked a resurgence as the Strikers battled for the equalizing goal.
FAU Softball Picked to Win Conference USA
Coming of its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2006, the Florida Atlantic University softball team was picked to win the Conference USA title in a poll of the league's head coaches, the conference office announced Wednesday. The Owls went 16-7 in C-USA play last season and were runners-up to WKU in both the regular season and at the Conference USA Tournament. "We know that being voted to win the conference means we'll get everyone's best shot and we're looking forward to the challenge," FAU Head Softball Coach Joan Joyce said. Kylee Hanson was named Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year. It's the second year in a row that an FAU pitcher has received the honor. Samantha Messer was named Preseason Pitcher of the Year last season. Hanson, a junior from Jupiter, ended the 2015 season with an 18-5 record
and a 1.56 ERA, including six shutouts and a save. She was named First Team All C-USA as well as Second Team NFCA AllSouth Region. "Kylee had a terrific sophomore season and we expect her to continue that this year," said Joyce. Senior outfielder Christina Martinez and sophomore shortstop Emily Lochten were also named to the preseason team. Martinez, who was named preseason AllConference for the second straight year, ended last season with a .348 batting average, 12 stolen bases and a team high 71 hits. "It's a testament to Christina that she was able to make the all-conference preseason team at a position that is absolutely loaded," said Joyce. Lochten, a Lake Worth, Fla. native started all 52 games for the Owls at shortstop, hitting a team best .363 with 44 runs scored, 14 doubles and 33 RBI. Her .534 slugging percentage, .480 on-base percentage and 30 stolen bases also bested the Owls. Lochten was named to the all-conference second team and all-freshman team at the end of last season. "We had high expectations for Emily when she got here last season and she certainly lived up to them," said Joyce.
