Quote of the Week: “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Community Citizens to Vote on Pay Raise for Elected Officials By: Veronica Haggar and Casey Westfall Last Tuesday, Boca Raton City Council voted 4 to 1 in favor of a referendum that will give voters the right to decide if a pay raise should be given to the mayor and councilors of the city. Currently, the mayor earns $9,200 annually, while city council members earn $7,200 annually. However if the amendment earns enough votes, their salaries will be linked to those of Palm Beach County Commissioners. Under the proposed legislation, the mayor will earn $38,355 annually, which is 40% of a Commissioner’s salary, while city council members will earn $28,776 annually, which is 30% of a Commissioner’s salary. James Hendry, a citizen of Boca Raton who was present at the meeting, voiced opposition to the measure. Mr. Hendry stated that even though the council’s job is very important, and that it is important to

get more citizens involved in city politics, August would not be the best time to hold the vote, since many people will not be in the city at the time. The issue of when the vote will be held was brought up by council members Scott Singer, who was the only council member to vote against the amendment, as he suggested the pay raise proposal should be started by residents as “the best way to see if it truly has support,” and Robert Weinroth, who proposed changing the effective date from October 1, 2016, to April 1, 2017, but his proposal failed. “Since 2004, voters have twice rejected pay raises for council members,” said Scott Singer, member of the City Council, during Tuesday’s meeting. The vote is set to be on the ballot in August’s primaries and if it passes, the pay raise would begin in October. If the ballot passes,, it would be the first time decades that the city’s elected officials

FAU Students Robbed at Gunpoint During Netflix Gathering

By CRA News Service

A Lake Park man was arrested and charged following a recent armed robbery at an apartment on FAU’s campus. Police charged Andre Delroy Chin Sang with six counts of strong-arm robbery with a firearm and one count of aggravated assault with a firearm. Boca Raton police say Chin Sang was with a group of men who robbed five students in the apartment at gunpoint on Jan. 13. No one was injured in the robbery. One of the alleged victims told police that he invited his friend, whom he knew as Drebo, or Dre, to join him and some friends at his apartment in the 600 block of NW. 13th St. The students were playing video games and watching Netflix, police said.

When Drebo, aka Chin Sang arrived, he brought two other men with him, according to the police report. The alleged victim told police that he did not know the other men and had a gut feeling that something was not right with them. The 19-year old alleged victim said he allowed them inside his apartment anyhow. Once inside the apartment, Chin Sang began acting nervous and paced back-andforth along a narrow hallway, the student told police. Chin Sang went into the bathroom then left saying he was getting something from a car, according to the report. Chin Sang knew that the robbery was going to take place, police said. While Chin Sang was outside, one of the men walked out of the kitchen with a handgun, grabbed one of the students by his t-shirt collar and stuck a gun to the right side of his head, police said. The suspect demanded everything and the students emptied their pockets on a coffee table police, police said. The second man put the students’ cellphones and wallets in a backpack and fled, police said. Police used the “Find My iPhone” app to track one of the stolen phones to what was later determined to be Chin Sang’s Lake Park home, according to the report.

would have a pay raise. “I think everyone up here serves on other boards, whether it be on the county or state level, and that’s not doing work for the state, that’s doing work that helps the citizens back here in Boca,” said Jeremy Rogers, member of the City Council. The Council believe that a pay raise would also motivate citizens to run for office and increase competition between candidates for the future elections. “This is a position that demands a higher compensation,” said Robert S. Weinroth, deputy mayor. “It demands a higher compensation to attract more people from the city, who feel that they can run for this position and it’s not going to be a hardship.”

“Even though the role of the council members is anything but part-time and our compensation os probably below minimum wage on an hourly basis, I cannot support this measurement as it stands,” said Singer. “I continue to think that a charter amendment to increase salaries should start organically with the residents.”

Let’s Not Forget Why we Observe Black History Month In a few days, it will be February, which signals Super Bowl frenzy and Valentine’s Day passion. It is also Black History Month, a 28-day period we set aside to observe and celebrate the accomplishments of black Americans in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. While it is the shortest month of the year, February is one of my busiest and financially lucrative months. It is the one time a year when black authors and public speakers such as myself are in high demand. Every institution and organization is looking to book someone who can share the tales of the past. There is plenty of work to go around, especially since I and a few other black writers I know tend to respectfully decline these invitations. Not that I couldn’t use the extra money or anything, but I resent being ghettoized, having people interested in what I do and what I have to say only during the month of February. While I do not think we should relegate my history to a month, I think it is important for black people to know their history, and

for white people to appreciate the contributions we made and continue to make to our country. In doing so we can and will uncover new truths about the journey we all share, and new promises for the next generation. Let me add that we have come a long way from 1926 when noted a Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” and other prominent black Americans of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, founded a celebration known at the time as Negro History Week. It was observed during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist and early civil rights advocate Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. It was celebrated until 1976 when the entire month of February was designated as Black History Month. Since then, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Here in the south Palm Beach County, we have a unique opportunity to learn about and be reminded of black history. In an area with an overwhelming Caucasian popu-

lation, blacks have a rich and storied past in its agricultural beginnings. Except for the planned activities at the Spady Museum in Delray Beach, I have not heard of any other events scheduled to observe the month. None-the-less, the hard-working team at the Spady Museum¸ Palm Beach County’s only museum dedicated to sharing the contributions of African-, Caribbean- and HaitianAmericans, has a full schedule planned to give you a slice of history. On Feb. 20, the Spady Museum will hold its annual Living Heritage Festival, which will feature the Tradition Bearers of Renaissance Park of Marianna. The nonprofit organization will demonstrate how Floridians lived off the land and prospered using skills and crafts from years past. Their display will include patchwork quilts, sage brooms, corn-husk mops and farm tools. They also will teach children how to make lye soap and sea grape jelly. Attendees at the festival will also hear the sounds of the nationally acclaimed soul/ blues/gospel band, The Sherman Holmes Project with Brooks Long.

Black History Month is a tremendous opportunity for reflection. We celebrate it for the same reason we commemorate any national holiday. It tells us of the importance of race relations and where this country comes from. These issues are often unexplored. When we forget why we celebrate something, it becomes pointless. In its original conception, this month was proclaimed as a reminder of black people’s contributions to this country. Seeing as America is increasingly becoming more diverse, now it’s just a reminder that we’re still here. Beyond the historical importance of celebrating Black History Month, it also provides an opportunity to talk about race. But if race relations are to improve in this country, we must stop being afraid to talk about race and our country’s history of slavery and segregation and their continued effects on modern society. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Avoid Unnecessary Trouble! Trouble does not necessarily follow certain persons, but there are individuals who definitely go after trouble. No matter where they may find themselves, irrespective of what their intentions may be, almost inevitably they get into some type of trouble with some regularity. What can the cause be? What are they doing to bring themselves into that unpleasant and unnecessary predicament? I believe that some individuals, by their attitudes, by the way they talk, by the manner they conduct themselves, by the hot temper they demonstrate, or other related factors, can easily be led into trouble with

other people. Yet, all this can be avoided altogether! The frequency of some persons causing trouble, may be due to their lack of sensitivity toward fellow humans, by lack of observation of people’s response or reaction to their peculiar ways, on account of their stubborn insistence in not changing what they are capable of improving, in regular or occasional relationships with others. Most trouble into which a human may enter can be avoided much more easily than one imagines. Sadly, some people prefer to welcome trouble and deal with it in one’s peculiar fashion that often tends to perpetuate

rather than resolve the trouble. There also are troubles that may affect a person which are not of such individual’s creation. These also, can either be perpetuated, or rapidly terminated. But there needs to be a personal plan in place which can function well in varied circumstances when some kind of trouble is a possibility. Such plan needs to be executed with honesty, dispatch, and must address the specific issue that relates to the potential cause of the trouble. It must be dealt with swiftly, as soon as trouble becomes apparent. If one waits too late and too long, instead of acting more promptly, one can easily be

engulfed by unexpected difficulties which spin off the primary trouble not dealt with appropriately. I was fortunate to have grown up with an oft-repeated proverb addressed to me and my play-mates, to the effect that when one doesn’t want, two won’t fight. In adulthood there needs to be a peace-seeking disposition in all our interactions and dealings with others. No one gains any benefit from prolonging a situation which can only get worse by so doing. It’s imperative to live out of solid convictions, emanating from a character which avails us at all times, particularly in moments of potential crisis!

If you’re planning to be downtown Delray Beach this weekend, brace yourself for the aroma of garlic in the air. Starting Friday evening, garlic lovers will be lining up for the opportunity to eat, stink and be merry as the 17th annual unique event kicks off on the grounds at Old School Square. The festival, which attracted more than 40,000 Garlic Heads over three days last year, will run through Sunday. As in previous years, organizers are offering something new and eclectic this year. Gourmet Alley concessionaires will include Garlic Ice Cream, Argentinean Garlic BBQ, flaming garlic shrimp scampi, garlic pizza, garlic Portobello sandwich and Garlic Fest crab cakes. “The Delray Beach Garlic Fest continues to live up to its reputation for being the premier food and entertainment event in South Florida,” read a posting on the organization’s website. “The event is dedicated to exploring the numerous health and culinary possibilities of garlic.” One of the highlights is the garlic cooking competition, which will be in the Garlic Stadium. Local talents will vie for bragging rights in a competition, which will feature ingredients in a mystery basket. Three time winner and reigning Garlic Chef Champion Chef Bruce Feingold of Dada’s is slated to defends his title against one of four who will square off in two rounds on Sunday. Chef Eric Baker of Max’s Harvest will challenge Danielle Herring of The Rebel House in round one at 11 a.m.; and Chris Reichart of Hudson at Waterway East will take on Winston Williams of Catering CC at 3 p.m. Another highlight is the broad range of national music entertainers. The sounds of Reggae music will fill the air Friday night as IRATION brings their Sunshine Reggae rhythms to the stage. Garlic Heads will be entertained Saturday

night by the pop punk sounding TAKING BACK SUNDAY. Each year, festival organizers ask attendees what artists they want to see at Garlic Fest? “We add [the] suggestions to our musical wish list and see who is available and within our budgetary constraints,” according to the organization’s website. “[Bruce] Springsteen, Van Morrison and Jimmy Buffett are among the list but in the past have turned down what we thought were very generous offers.” This past year, performances by Collective Soul & Dispatch showcased the diversity of music that graces the stage at Old School Square. Some favorite past performers at Garlic Fest include Buddy Guy, Blues Traveler, Jonny Lang, Pepper, Donna the Buffalo, G Love and the Special Sauce, Sister Hazel and Alan Parsons Project to name just a few. “We continue to strive for an eclectic mix of great music at Garlic Fest and relish the challenge each year to bring great national acts to Delray Beach!” according to the site. Garlic education will also be an important component of this year’s event. Students can enroll in Garlic University and learn how to grow their own sustainable garden. They will get a potted plant to take home. With more than 500 community volunteers playing several roles, the festival has, since inception, donated more than $600,000 to 16 non-profit organizations that serve youth in the areas of education and arts. The festival runs from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Advance admission for Friday is $20 and $15 for Saturday. The price at the gate is $30 for Friday and Saturday night. Tickets for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. are $12 at the gate. Sunday tickets are $12 all day and can be bought at the gate. Children 10 and under are free. For more information, visit dbgarlicfest. com.

Man Arrested for Inappropriate Behavior in Front of Breastfeeding Woman By Veronica Haggar

Travis D. Willis, 30 year old man from Lauderhill, was arrested after being accused of indecent exposure while watching a woman breastfeed her child in the parking lot of L.A. Fitness. The woman told the police she was breastfeeding her three month old baby in her car as she noticed a silver Buick back into the parking spot next to her vehicle. Shortly, the driver’s window rolled down and, according to her statement, she saw Willis masturbating while staring at her January 29 - February 4, 2016

breastfeeding. As the woman proceeded to call 911, Willis drove away. She was able to provide the man’s license plate and description to the police and identified him in a photo line-up. Although Willis doesn’t seem to have a criminal record, the police said many women have complained about a man, with the same description as Willis, performing the same activity in the same place over the past months. Willis was taken to jail where he’s been held on $1,000 bond.

Tri-County Animal Rescue Cocktail Party I attended a cocktail reception at the Pinon Grill in Boca Raton last night for Tri-County Animal Rescue that was given by the Inner Circle Executive Club which meets on Thursday’s at the Pinon Grill. There was a very large crowd present and I ran into many familiar Boca faces. There was a Chinese Auction and a live auction with many prizes given out. All in all, a fun party for a worthy cause.

Marriage is not for the faint of heart. You start off with all the best intentions, but little things happen along the way. Sometimes they pile up and fester. Sometimes you reach a point of no return and even though the marriage has been long, you have to admit defeat. “45 Years” is a haunting, melancholy portrait of a long-married British couple facing their 45th wedding anniversary. Their 40th anniversary was cancelled when Geoff Mercer (Tom Courtenay) had to have emergency surgery. His wife Kate (Charlotte Rampling) is determined to do it up grand for their 45th. However a letter from Swiss police authorities arrives for Geoff with unsettling news. The body of his long-ago girlfriend Katya has been discovered and identified in a crevasse in the Alps. Geoff never mentioned his first love to Kate. Why should he? The news of Katya’s recovery rattles Geoff to the core. His wife can’t help but wonder what other secrets he has kept from her. “45 Years” is based on David Constantine’s story “In Another Country.” The screenplay is adapted by director Andrew Haigh. Charlotte Rampling is ideal to play Kate.

She already has a mournful face. The corners of her mouth naturally turn down. Tom Courtney is also well-cast as the seemingly meek and unexciting Geoff who harbors a volatile secret. “45 Years” is not much fun, and it is worse if you have been through failed marriages as I have. It is not pretty watching a long marriage fall apart, even if it is just a movie. Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay have already received accolades at major film festivals. If you want to see masterful acting, this is for you. Just don’t bring a date. Rating: 

Interfaith Service in Boca Raton Marks 31 Year Partnership

The Boca Raton Tribune

columnists FAITH By Rick Boxx

The Importance of a Unique Mission Continur from page 1 led by Cantorial Associate, Sarah Freudenberger. The service was a powerful and uplifting tribute to Dr. King, filled with musical and spiritual offerings from both congregations. Speakers included Julius Jackson, Vice President of Ryan Millennium Group, Inc., who spoke about his experience in 1960’s St. Augustine when he had to hide in a grocery store owned by a Jewish couple to wait for an “all clear” in order to be able to continue marching for civil rights as one of Martin Luther King’s foot soldiers. “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to again see the black community join hands with the Jewish community to promote the dream of Dr. King, more than fifty years after we marched in St. Augustine. A few members came up to me after the service and shared their sincere interest in reinvigorating the black and Jewish efforts to achieve Dr. King’s dream. I am looking

January 29 - February 4, 2016

forward to seeing the impact that we can have,” Julius Jackson said. This past Thanksgiving, the two religious institutions fed Thanksgiving dinner to nearly 4,000 people in need, as part of the 31-year program. In 2014, Congregation B’nai Israel hosted the late Dr. Maya Angelou, as part of the 2014 Martin Luther King Day partnership, in what turned out to be one of her last public appearances. The relationship between these two congregations began in 1984 when Congregation B’nai Israel approached Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, the largest and oldest African-American church in Boca Raton. During the early 1980’s, Jewish and Black relations were unsettled in the U.S. and the two congregations wanted to do something locally to quell the negativity. The first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. interfaith service was held in 1985, the year before this day became a national holiday.

When you go to work, does having a sense of mission – an underlying purpose – factor into how much you enjoy what you do? An article in Wall Street Journal, a respected business periodical, discussed the increasing focus corporations are now putting on their employees’ need for a sense of purpose in their work. For many of them, having a job to perform and earning a regular paycheck is not sufficient – they also want to feel their work has deeper meaning. This concern is shared by many people as they evaluate their investment options. For instance, Factiva, an online business information and research tool, discovered the words “mission” “higher purpose,” or “changing the world” were discussed 3,243 times by investors with their financial advisors on recorded phone calls in 2014, compared to only 2,318 times five years before. One reason for this significant surge in interest is generational. There is a strong emphasis among many men and women in the so-called “millennial generation” who want to work somewhere that is making a difference in the world. They want their vocations – and the companies that employ them – to contribute positively to people that use their products and services, communities where they are located, and to the world at large. Many businesses and organizations already have statements of mission, vision and values, so they can readily address the desire for a greater purpose that many of their workers and prospective employees have. A well-articulated mission statement helps an individual to quickly discern whether a company’s overriding purpose and their own are in alignment.

www.bocaratontribune.com

For those of us that see our work as an expression of our spiritual convictions, this also makes a lot of sense. The Bible teaches vocational pursuits are part of God’s calling and His plan for us to participate in His creation constructively. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). In other words, the gifts and talents we possess are not arbitrary, but divinely given for us to participate in God’s work locally and globally. As employers, executives and managers, one of the ways we can best serve those working under our direction is to communicate how much we value the ways God has designed them and our business for His unique purposes. This can also serve as a good recruiting tool, showing job seekers that the company has an understanding of its role in society and how individual members of the team can contribute toward achieving that purpose. People who find meaning in their work and pursue excellence in all they do typically find their jobs more fulfilling and rewarding, and not just in terms of compensation. And that dedication deserves genuine recognition and appreciation. As Proverbs 22:29 states, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” When workers feel they are “on a mission,” undertaking tasks and responsibilities that transcend mere deadlines and quotas, they become inspired, highly motivated and more productive. The company benefits as well, making it a win-win situation for everyone.

Did Someone Say Taxi? FAU’s College of Nursing Receives The Future Of Taxi Services Is Here $350,000 for Student Scholarships & Faculty Retention Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing recently received two gifts totaling $350,000 from local philanthropist, business owner and nurse Christine E. Lynn. A $300,000 gift will support the College’s faculty talent retention fund, which assists in retaining the best and brightest faculty, while a $50,000 gift will fund student scholarships. “We are extremely grateful for Mrs. Lynn’s generous support. These gifts demonstrate the love she has for this community and the commitment she has to improving health care,” said Marlaine Smith, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing. “The endowed scholarship fund provides support for our undergraduate students who are preparing for a nursing career.” The College’s faculty talent retention fund addresses the need to reward and retain its most accomplished faculty members, who are heavily recruited by universities throughout the country due to a critical national nurse faculty shortage. The nursing assistance fund is intended to support students who plan to work in this area once

they graduate. “An investment in this nursing school is an investment in the health of the people in our community. As a nurse, I care about this,” said Lynn. Over the past 30 years, Lynn has supported nursing, healthcare and education with unwavering dedication. She currently serves as former-chairman of the board of Lynn Insurance Group, and as chairman of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Board of Trustees. She is a 2013 recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given to a distinguished American citizen who exemplifies a life dedicated to community service and who makes a better world for all. Her philanthropic efforts have provided much to the College, including a generous $10 million gift to fund and name the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing building. More recently, FAU received a $5 million gift to name The Christine E. Lynn Sports Medicine Center at the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence.

sports Record Crowd Witnesses International Friendly Between Boca Raton FC and FC Shakhtar Donetsk To compare this in American Sports, it would be like the New England Patriots coming to Boca Raton to take on the Florida Atlantic University football team. FC Shakhtar is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and Boca Raton FC is a fourth division club that has played one full season, which makes what happened on Monday night truly remarkable. Boca Raton FC rolled out the red carpet for their Ukrainian visitors, with pre-game ceremonies, and halftime jersey exchange between clubs. Before the game, Mayor Susan Haynie and Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth were present as they welcomed the Ukrainian club to Boca Raton:

Monday Night Football was back and under the lights at Boca Raton High School on January 25. The high school stadium that is used to hosting big district American football games played host to an International soccer friendly between Boca Raton Football

Club and FC Shakhtar Donetsk. FC Shakhtar Donetsk is one of the best pro clubs in Ukraine, and routinely plays in the UEFA Champions League, and even won the UEFA Cup in 2009. FC Shakhtar played Real Madrid, one of the best teams in the world, just last season.

‘Dear friends, I am pleased to invite members and fans of FC Shakhtar Donetsk to Boca Raton for the game against our local football club. It is a great honor for FC Boca Raton to receive the team of Shakhtar. At the same time, it involves promotion of international football in Boca Raton. Our city is very excited to be the venue for an international match between two

spectacular teams, as well as the arena for their fans and supporters. This event brings our entire community together. On behalf of the city of Boca Raton, please accept our best wishes in the light of the upcoming match. Yours faithfully, Susan Haynie Mayor’ The game could not have started any better for the home team as Xavier Silva scored for Boca Raton FC just minutes into the match, however, one goal would be all that Boca Raton FC could tally against the European powerhouse which scored five unanswered goals. Despite the preseason loss in the field, the success outside the field was tremendous. With an attendance of 841, Boca Raton FC shattered its previous home attendance record of 662 that was set back on May 15 versus Miami Dade FC. “We did not know what to expect from Boca Raton FC,” said FC Shakhtar forward Andriy Boryachuk after the game. “But as soon as the game started these guys showed a good level of soccer.”

Chatham Named Preseason Player of the Year, Owls Tabbed Second in C-USA Florida Atlantic University junior shortstop CJ Chatham has been tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year in Conference USA, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Senior Brett Lashley was also selected to the Preseason All-C-USA team as the Owls were picked to finish second in the coaches’ poll. Chatham, a Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American, hit .335 in 2015 with 44 RBI. His 22 doubles led an FAU squad that returned to an NCAA Regional appearance with the help of his 19-game hitting streak late in the season. Chatham scored 44 runs and belted three triples and three home runs, slugging .496 on the year, starting 60 games for the Owls. “To be named preseason player of the year is quite an honor for CJ and the program,” FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. “It is nice to be recognized by the other coaches in the league in such a fashion. I look forward to watching CJ compete this year.” Lashley saw time at five different positions in 2015, his first season with the Owls.
