Elad National Properties have finished plans on Mizner 200, which if approved, will replace the aging Mizner on the Green complex. Elad’s CEO, Amnon Safran, said that the nine story luxury condominium, with units that average around 2,000 square feet, meets all the requirements laid out in Ordinance #4035, and will submit the finalized plans for the project in February for approval. Prior to Mizner 200, Elad had submitted plans for New Mizner on the Green, which consisted of four towers which averaged around 300 feet,

• Congratulations to Lieutenant Liz Roberts, Sergeant Brandon Harding, and Sergeant Doug Immler, new members of the Boca Raton Police Department. Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth assisted the promotional ceremony last Wednesday. • Last Friday, Alan Ziperstein, a 72 year old from Delray Beach, was driving the wrong way when he hit and killed a pedestrian crossing the road, after crashing three cars. Seven individuals were injured. Ziperstein lost his life in the accident.

Honorary Chairs, Robin Trompeter and Andrew Scott greeted the 450 guests as they mozzie about sampling the vittles and liquid refreshments. Congratulations to Michael Michael Daszkal on being awarded the Community Service Award. Lots to ranch hands made it a great night. All of it was for the benefit of the George Snow Scholarship Fund. • Cub Scout Pack 323 joined the City Council Meeting on January 26 and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Pack 323 is sponsored by the St. Joan of Arc Church. • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced 6 new cases of Zika have been reported in Florida. • Florida voters will have the final say on whether to legalize medical marijuana in the state. Orlando lawyer John Morgan, announced during this week, that the amendment earned a spot on the November ballot with 692,981 signatures. • Execution of Cary Michael Lambrix is on hold after Florida Supreme Court debates over death penalty. The U.S. Supreme Court declared Florida’s death penalty was unconstitutional. Several questions have been left from the past court filings on whether the ruling involving Florida’s death penalty is retroactive to past cases and if it would cover Lambrix. On Tuesday afternoon, Florida Supreme Court agreed to stay the execution of Lambrix pending further order of the court. • The “Prevention of Acts of War” bill was approved by the Criminal Justice Subcommitte on Wednesday with a 9-4 vote in favor. The bill authorizes and enables the governor to protect Florida from “those who would settle here with the intention of committing acts of war”. It identifies as “invader” and “restricted person” any dangerous immigrant with intent of acts of war. Immigrants and refugees born in the Western Hemisphere are an exception to the bill. • Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission to reduce customer rates on April thanks to anticipated savings from new power plant and lower natural gas prices. On Tuesday, a FPL news release states that the FPL Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center is expected to enter service on April 1, bringing the benefits of high-efficiency natural gas generation to customers approximately two months ahead of schedule and on budget. • Community Redevelopment Agency of Boca Raton will have a special meeting on Thursday for the “purpose of receiving a Director’s report regarding issuance of a foundation permit for the project located at 327 East Royal Palm Road.”

The Boca Raton Public Library invites the City of Boca’s citizens to join its first community reading experience—One Book Boca—by reading the book, Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination, by J.K.

Rowling. The book was selected by the library staff as part of the Boca Raton Public Library’s 2016 Civic Engagement theme for its inspirational message and the deeper questions of what it means to live a good life in our modern world. “Very Good Lives” is an illustrated edition

The 7th annual Boca Raton Fine Art Show was held over the weekend of Jan 23-24 at Sanborn Square Park, and despite the rain, it drew sizable crowds to the venue. 160 professional artists participated in the show, with judges bestowing those whom they considered the best with ribbons and cash prizes. But they weren’t the only ones whose work was acknowledged by the judges. Hot Works, LLC, who sponsored the art show, held the Budding Artist Competition for participants who were ages 9-19. The competition had 40 applicants from 11 schools in the area, with four winners who were announced Sunday afternoon, and were awarded $250 in cash prizes. Of the four winners of the Budding Artist Competition, three came from schools in the Boca area. 16 year old Pierce Hermann,

who attends Boca Raton Community High School, was bestowed with a Budding Artist Award of Excellence, along with Meir Lazar, 15, who attends Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. The highest honor in the competition, the Best Budding award, was given to Sarah Khambalia, 16, who also attends Weinbaum Yeshiva. Patty Narozny, who is the executive producer for the Boca Raton Fine Art Show, says that the Budding Artist Competition is “part of our commitment to bring art education into the community,” and “gives budding, young artists a golden opportunity to begin learning the rules of being part of a professional art show and exhibition.

Oyuki Poletz, the Program Services Librarian says, “We are excited to bring a shared reading experience to the community of Boca Raton. Last Monday, Mayor Susan Haynie presented the library with a proclamation that February 2016 is One Book Boca Month, encouraging all residents to read and participate in this annual program. The book chosen by library staff is Very Good Lives: the Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling. It is a quick enjoyable read for all ages, and its inspirational themes will stimulate discussion and foster community.” The Library will be having two different discussions: moderated and teen book discussion. The moderated community discussion will join FAU’s creative writing professor, A. Papatya Buckak, to discuss the book on February 26th at 7:00pm at the Downtown Library. Refreshments will be served. Poletz adds, “This is the first time the BRPL has planned a community wide read-

ing event, we titled it One Book Boca. We appreciate the Mayor and the City Council’s support of the library and its initiative of One Book Boca because it encourages reading and community conversation. The quote from the Washington Post says it best, “the idea is that the city that opens the same book closes it in greater harmony.”’ At the teen book discussion, teens can view the speech and discuss Rowling’s book, and create their own idea board with tips on how to follow their dreams. Teens will also have the opportunity to share their thoughts in short video clips. It will be at the Downtown Library on February 4 at 6:00 p.m. or the Spanish River Library on February 8 at 4:15 p.m. Very Good Lives Interactive Display: Visit the “advice board” at both libraries beginning on January 25 for the opportunity to give (and take) advice on living a very good life. The Boca Raton Public Libraries offer both print and eBook versions of Very Good Lives available for check-out for library cardholders. A discussion study guide for schools, book clubs and individuals will be available at the libraries and bocalibrary.org.

Florence A. “Flossy” Keesely: Made a Difference in so Many Lives Three weeks ago, I found myself penning my column on the loss of three people I admire. Once again, here I am doing the same thing – this time it is about Florence A. Keesely, who died last week at 101. Flossy, as we affectionately called her, lived a good and distinguished life. She was a longtime patron of the arts who gave of herself unselfishly to her community. She loved the arts and spent decades sharing that appreciation with others, from the hospital hallways of New Rochelle, N.Y to the Count Adolph de Hoernle Amphitheater at Mizner Park, where her seven-foottall bronze sculpture stands. I did not know Flossy well. However, the few times we saw each other, she made me feel very welcome and I quickly became fascinated with her genuine and kind spirit. We spoke several times by phone and it wasn’t

long before I learned about her passion for the arts and how she sponsored several concerts and musical and theatrical performances for area students. I remembered being quite impressed a few years ago when – at 98 or so - she produced her fourth “Pathway to the Stars” musical program. She was a pioneer and had a very impressive career in television. She was one of the first women to appear on daytime television as the co-host of TV’s first morning talk show on the old DuMont Network, NYC, on Sept. 19, 1948. (Her late husband, Nick, was involved in the production of radio and television programs in the 1940s on that same network). Flossy used her talent and experience to help both the youth and seniors alike. I learned how through her own charitable organization, Flossy’s Dream Foundation, she worked with one of the local Rotary

Clubs to sponsor variety shows and award scholarships to young students in hopes they will pursue their dreams in the fields of vocal, dance and acting performance. I loved it when she said she was motivated by giving the youth an opportunity to perform in front of an audience. She felt that with roughly 2,000 people in attendance at her shows, what better way for these young people to cut their teeth than in front of their hometown crowd. She invited seasoned entertainers such as international singing sensation Doug Crosley, Ziegfeld Dancers and Jan McArt, to name a few, and she had students share the stage with them. Flossy’s philosophy was simply, even if they don’t become stars, there’s something about having an experience that they’ll never forget. What an unselfish idea. She is also credited with producing “Alive

and Well,” a variety show geared toward senior citizens in Florida. The show features classic oldies and interviews with veteran entertainers and celebrities. She was never one to speak of her accomplishments, which were many. She was always humble. In fact, she often said she lived her life by doing to others, as she would have them do to her. “Give your best and respect others because we’re just a little grain of sand in the world,” she once told a reporter. Somehow, whenever I think of Flossy, I am reminded of George Bailey in Frank Capra’s 1946 film ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ If Flossy had never been born, many people’s lives would have been very, very different. Thank you Flossy for the difference you have made in so many lives.

Be Authentic, Bold, and Clear! Every human being comes into the world with communication mechanisms. Even newborn babies know how to share pressing needs to a parent or guardian, capable of supplying their request. What many adults fail to understand, even after several years on planet earth, is that communication among fellow humans is a task that demands continued improvement. The mere utterance of words, or an expression of feelings, does not necessarily indicate that a message has been understood! Those who are eager to be understood by others, so as to anticipate a response from them, are responsible to convey their message with clarity, free from interfering noises, and at a moment which offers the

best chances of comprehension, and the provision of some form of response. Not only serious issues, but also less significant matters, have the greatest probability of being heard, understood, and acted upon when timing, surroundings, and emotional wellbeing of those engaged in the conversation are key factors taken into consideration. A dialogue does it best! It is the one communicating to another who has the primary responsibility of ascertaining that the message has been heard and understood. While using the vacuum cleaner, when the television or radio are blasting, or when children are fighting or crying nearby, is not the best time to convey messages from one person to another.

The moment a spouse enters the house after a long day at work is never the best time to address any issue of importance to be grasped by the hearer, especially when that issue entails potentially bad news. I once heard of a wise wife who studiously avoided greeting her husband after his long day at work with any bad news, regardless of the seriousness of the issue. So, one day, as soon as her husband arrived home, with a welcoming smile she went to kiss him and proclaimed: “Hi, honey; you should be happy to know that three of our four children are not in the hospital at the moment!” With that creative approach, and the blow softened, she was able gradually to explain that one of the kids had broken a leg during

a ball game, but all else was okay! You can avoid being misunderstood, not being heard, or sharing your thoughts at an inappropriate moment by seeking the right time, the best setting, and the most clear and adequate words which effectively and exhaustively express what you desire to convey. It is not late at night, much less when you are tired in bed ready to sleep, or at moments when other pressing sirens beckon another’s attention that you should spill your concerns, or seek an answer to significant matters. Communication is not hard, but it needs to be done effectively!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Obituaries Flossy Keesely, 101

, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2016. Flossy was born on April 18, 1914, in Vienna, Austria. With a background in show business, Flossy was not only a champion of the arts in Boca Raton, but was also involved in a number of local charities. She has sponsored countless musical and theatrical performances as well as concerts for young students. Her many friends can’t say enough about this very special lady who gave of herself for decades for the community. For the past six years, she produced her “Pathway to the Stars” show in conjunction with the Rotary Club. Her love of entertainment may have developed when her husband, Nick, was involved in the production of radio and television programs many years ago, Flossy was the co-host of TV’s first morning talk show on the old Dumont network back in 1948. Flossy has been a star maker, both with her late husband, Nick, a TV producer in the 1950s and 1960s, and since his passing. Flossy’s story would fill many pages. While volunteering in hospitals in New Rochelle, N.Y., where she founded hospitality standards that are now used in hospitals around the United States, Flossy developed a profound interest in nonprofit initiatives. Information on Flossy’s memorial service will be released when more information is given.

which violated Boca’s height restriction for buildings in the downtown area. The height restriction is currently at 100 feet, although the city council have allowed a few exemptions, such as the 140 feet tall Mark at CityScape. World-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, who designed One World Trade Center in Manhattan and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, had been hired by Elad to design the four towers for the New Mizner on the Green project. However, Elad have revealed that Libeskind

has not returned for Mizner 200, and that the project was designed by architectural firm Garcia Stromberg, who have previously designed multiple buildings in Boca, such as the Boca Beach Club and One Thousand Ocean. Elad have stated that given Mizner 200’s pedestrian-friendly design and close proximity to downtown, residents will be encouraged to leave their vehicles in their parking spaces in favor of walking around town. They also said that the complex will feature “more than 40% green space,” and have a minimal impact on traffic in the area.

With the weather taking a cold turn, South Florida was warmed up by the 57-year-old Queen of Pop, Saturday, January 23rd, and Sunday, January 24th. The concert took place at the Miami American Airline Arena for her hater-silencing Rebel Heart World Tour. Before the show started, an hour and a half was filled with club music, by opener, DJ Lunice. He started off the concert by DJing hit music from today, which created the fun, dance atmosphere that stuck throughout the show. Once Madonna took the crucifix-shaped stage at about 10:30 p.m. and it was clear the singer wasn’t kidding around. Descending from a cage of swords in the opening Game of Thrones-themed suite, she launched the show with Rebel Heart’s “Iconic” and “B**** I’m Madonna”. The concert kicked into high-gear as she strapped on her heavy metal guitar and brought her loyal fans (including Naomi Campbell) to their feet with 1983’s “Burning Up.” The setting then quickly turned back to her mixing spiritual and sexual, with Madonna and her dancers dancing on polls in nun habits and reenacting the Last Supper during “Holy Water,” “Devil Pray,” and “Messiah.” She reemerged dressed as Sandy from Grease, singing “Body Shop” before pulling out a ukulele and letting her vocals shine with an acoustic, tear jerking take of 1986’s “True Blue.” “Deeper and Deeper” followed, before Madonna turned back to her

vulnerable side, climbing up and down (and pushing someone off) a spiral staircase to belt Rebel Heart’s “Heartbreak City” and an affecting “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,” a nearly-forgotten song from Like a Virgin. She also performed “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from her 1996 hit movie Evita for the first time ever in America. Madonna told the sold-out crowd in Miami that she had wanted to sing this song during the whole Rebel Heart Tour, but couldn’t find the right place to sing it. Singing it in Miami turned out to be a great decision, because the crowd loved it. The final act of the night took the audience back to the 1920’s, as Madonna hit the stage as a flapper in a nightclub and one dancer came out as Charlie Chaplin’s character, The Little Tramp. Madonna covered both Edith Piaf ’s “La Vie En Rose” and Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” at this time DJ Khaled made a guest appearance and brought her diamonds on to the stage. Her show ended with “Unapologetic B****.” At the end of the song, she told the crowd that she needed a “new b*****” and brought her daughter Mercy James onstage. James was celebrating her 10th birthday, and her mom made the entire audience sing her “Happy Birthday” before smashing a cupcake in her face. Madonna encored in a full-out rendition of “Holiday” with all of her backup dancers onstage, wearing a patriotic outfit. Fans hope that even though this tour is the final one in Madonna’s deal with Live Nation, that she’ll continue touring in the future. I would definitely recommend adding a Madonna concert to your bucket list before she is done performing all together, even if you are not a huge fan. It’s a concert you will not want to miss.

Memories of My Dearest Friend, Flossy Keesley 1914-2016

I was deeply saddened today to learn of the passing of one of my dearest friend’s, Flossy Keesley. Flossy had been like a second Mother to me from the time I met her 17 years ago when Bob and I first moved to Boca Raton. We were seated together in the Countess De Hoernle’s box at the opening of the Mizner Amphitheatre and we instantly became best friends. She invited me to lunch to join her Ziegfield Follies Girls Group. Through the years we attended many different community events

together and Flossy was so generous and charitable to the Boca Comnmunity. The statue of Flossy in Mizner Park will long remember this remarkable woman who donated so generously to the young artists of Boca Raton and singer, Ariana Grande performed in one of Flossy’s shows when she was a youngster. Flossy’s last public outing was at the Wick Theatre where I took her for her birthday to see the show, “Ain’t Misbehavin”and we were joined by the Countess DeHoernle. It was on her bucket list to see the Wick Theatre and I bought tickets to honor her wish for her birthday and Marilyn Wick honored her 100th birthday with champagne and a birthday cake and the audience sang Happy 100th Birthday to Flossy. She told me she wanted a memorial service for her friend’s at the fountain statue after her passing. and we will hold a celebration of Flossy’s life on Feb. 12th at 3:15pm at Flossy’s Fountain at the Mizner Amphitheatre. The U.S. Coast Guard is the oldest branch of American military service, dating to 1790. It is my favorite service because its primary purpose is to save people, not kill them. “The Finest Hours” centers on an incredibly difficult rescue mission off the coast of Chatham, Mass, on Feb. 18, 1952 in the middle of a ferocious nor’easter blizzard with high winds and higher seas. Two large oil tankers were being battered apart and in danger of sinking. The movie, directed by Craig Gillespie (“Million Dollar Arm”), concentrates on the more dramatic wreck of the SS Pendleton. It was an older ship with a shoddy repair of an 18-foot gash. When the weld gave way the ship literally split in half. The bow portion sunk quickly, taking officers with it. The remaining 34 crewmen huddled in the stern section. The commander of the Chatham Coast Guard Base asked for four volunteers to get in a 36-foot rescue craft and try to make it out to the sinking Pendleton. The first to put up his hand is Bernie Webber (Chris

Pine) a gung-ho Guardsman if there ever was one. Chris Pine is an inordinately handsome man, but as an actor he is a bit, ahem, wooden. Bernie is falling in love with gorgeous Miriam (Holliday Grainger), who looks like a Disney princess come to life. The couple’s romance, impending marriage and Miriam’s worry about the dangerous mission are all subplot. Volunteering with Bernie are Richard (Ben Foster), Andy (Kyle Gallner and Daniel (Eric Bana). The de facto commander of the doomed Pendleton is chief engineer Ray Sybert, played by Casey Affleck. Ray is not a very likeable guy, but he gets the job done. The voyage out of Chatham Harbor and into the open sea is predictably perilous. There is a lot of grimacing, wincing and frightened looks from all crew members. The special effects are reasonably good, but sometimes you can tell it’s a scale-model boat being buffeted in a studio pool. A nice thing the studio did was to invite a group of Coast Guard veterans, decked out in formal regalia and seated at place of honor in the VIP section. One of them was seated next to me. I did not ask his age, but Bruce Parmett told me he was a Korean War veteran before joining the Coast Guard. He teaches boat safety classes the fourth Saturday of every month. “The Finest Hours” is no movie masterpiece but it serves a noble service honoring the America military’s most unsung heroes. Garlic Fest Continues To be a Family Affair

Downtown Delray Beach was the ultimate destination for all things garlic this past weekend. From garlic barbecue to garlic crab cakes and garlic French fries to even garlic ice cream, the thousands who attended the 17th Garlic Fest had a wide selection from which to choose. “There’s no way to not have a good time here,” said Steve Hollman of Margate, who attended the event for the third year. “There is so much food with garlic to sample here it’s OK if you don’t taste another piece of garlic until next year.” Along with the array of food, festival attendees had three days of live music. There also was a midway with carnival rides and dozens of arts and crafts vendors. One of the highlights was the garlic cooking competition, which pitted four local chefs against each other for bragging rights. Chef Eric Baker of Max’s Harvest, edged three time winner Chef Bruce Feingold of Dada’s to become the 2016 Garlic Chef Champion. “Today was an awesome and wonderful day,” Baker said after being named champ. “My day is here and I reign supreme.” Feingold took the defeat in stride. “It happens. I had a blast,” he said. “I had a good time and honestly, Eric is amazing. I always had a lot of respect for him. It’s just fun and we kept the trophy in Delray.”

The festival began 17 years ago as a way to boost economic development and bring new faces downtown, organizers said. It also is a fundraising arm to several local nonprofit organizations that promote education and the arts, said Nancy StewartFranczak, executive director of Festival Management Group, which organized the event. Larry Davis, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., said the Garlic Fest aids in “raising money for the scholarship fund and supporting good causes.” The festival also allows the fraternity to gain exposure and “build a relationship with the people,” he continued. Without the help of 16 diverse organizations and about 550 volunteers, “we would never be able to do this,” Stewart-Franczak said. Initially, the Garlic Fest was a concentration of “all the locals and all the people you knew,” she said. Now, because of the increasing popularity on the local and national scene, a combination of new, young faces dominate the food stands, rides, and musical performances. “Delray is [now] a destination.” she said. Tom Johnson, the man inside the famous garlic clove, dons the costume every year because he knows he is helping out local charities. “Nancy asked me [to do this] 15 years ago, and it’s only evolved into a clove during recent years,” said Johnson, who genuinely enjoys making people happy, and thus continues to volunteer yearly.

Asking The Wrong Question? Dan, a budding entrepreneur who was eager to start his career as an independent businessman, called me recently asking for counsel and some assistance. He asked me very directly, “Can you help me apply for, and borrow, all the money I need to start a new business?” This question did not surprise me. Many entrepreneurs assume that borrowing as much money as possible will prove to be the solution for their funding problems. If there is enough financial capital available to them, they reason, how can they not succeed? However, many years of experience – both as a businessman and as a consultant to other business and professional people – have taught me that if we are willing to pray and seek God’s wisdom, He usually has a better plan than simply trying to pool enough financial resources to pursue our business goals. In my opinion, Dan was asking me the wrong question. Instead, he should have been seeking answers to two different questions. First, he needed to ask himself, “Does God want me to start this business?” Proverbs 16:9 states, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Then, if Dan was able to discern that God indeed was supportive of his plans for a business, the second question he should have been asking was, “God, how do you wish to fund this new business?” In starting an enterprise, we typically look to lending institutions, investors, or business partners for obtaining the necessary financial resources. However, the Bible warns against placing our confidence solely in those areas. Psalm 20:7 teaches,“Some trust in chariots

and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Many times business loans become necessary, but failing to consult with God first, to determine whether He has a better solution, can lead to disaster. In Jeremiah 33:3 He promises, “Call on Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you do not know.” In other words, the Lord may have much better options available, but if we do not ask, we will never know what they are. Typically we evaluate situations – a new business start, a major setback, or a pressing deadline – based only on what we know and can see. We are admonished to recognize the dangers of being shortsighted, and instead to trust God as our provider. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). We also are assured that the Lord is aware of our needs and will meet them, if we trust Him to do so. “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus”(Philippians 4:19). Many of us have read this passage, perhaps multiple times. But do we really believe it? If we do, we should act accordingly. The principle is simple: Whether we are starting or expanding our businesses, the first thing we should do is trust God; it should not be the last thing we do, after we have explored and exhausted all other possibilities. As I have seen and experienced many times, God’s preferred plan will likely save us from the perils and oppressive burdens of too much debt.

Boca Raton is known for its beautiful beaches, quiet living, and beautiful art boutiques. With the center of all the art in downtown Boca Raton, with the Boca Raton Art Museum and various art boutiques in Mizner Park, it can be hard to compete. But travel 5 minutes west, and the term art boutique has a different concept. Having had their start in Delray, formerly known as AR Gallery, Amy Reshefsky and Deborah Rader, had a vision. To bring original art in a more accessible way, and a more affordable price, not only to decorators and collectors but also to the general public. With a change in location, now in the 11th Street industrial park, and a name change, It’s All About the Art had its Grand Opening on the week of Jan. 17. As you walk in, the minimalist decor gives guests a nice welcoming feel. The front door leads to a room full of paintings, but what draws the eye is straight ahead. There hangs a painting of the featured Artist of the Month. To the left there is a nice white table with chairs, which serves as a part of the studio’s new concept. Due to the lack of wall space, they came up with the idea to have 3 ringed binders for each artist that they represent. In those binders, each divider is a specific type of art form; from canvas, to glass, metal sculptures, clay sculptures, etc. “This way you can sip on some coffee and pick out the pieces you would like,” said

Amy, sitting at the white table painted by herself. “This way you don’t have to go all over the place looking for that certain piece,” Amy added. It’s All About the Art, brings original pieces from local artists in all kinds of artistic mediums, up to 50 percent of the price of a regular hanging gallery. The art they offer ranges from the price point of $100 to $3,000. Already representing a variety of artists, they are always willing to take in more. Being artists themselves, behind the showroom is their studio, where they create their own art. “[With It’s All About the Art] we were able to create, business and studio wise,” said Deborah, about the dual function of their gallery. “It’s all about sharing,” continued Deborah, when asked what art is. And It’s All About the Art does just that. It gives the artists exposure and a creates a more personal experience to buying art. Medical Marijuana Makes It Back to Florida Ballot By Veronica Haggar

Florida voters will have the final say on whether to legalize medical marijuana in the state. Orlando lawyer John Morgan, announced during this week, that the amendment earned a spot on the November ballot with 692,981 signatures, a lot more than required to qualify. Morgan is the chairman of United for Care, the campaign run by People United for Medical Marijuana (PUFMM), which has been pushing for the amendment and legalization of medical marijuana. If the amendment is passed, doctors would prescribe the drug for people with severe medical conditions like cancer, epilepsy, AIDS, among others. “This November, Florida will pass this law and hundreds of thousands of sick and suffering people will see relief,” said Morgan on a statement. Two years ago a similar amendment supported by 58% of voters failed as the state law required a 60% minimum to pass. “To get to 60% this year, we need to gear

up and make sure we have enough funds to do statewide advertising for weeks, and make sure that voters in every market know why they should give doctors the right to recommend what’s best for their patients.” said Ben Pollara, campaign manager of United for Care. According to the United for Care website, recent polling shows that over 70% of Floridians support the legalization of medical marijuana. “Our language is stronger than in 2014 and it shows,” said Morgan. “Pam Bondi didn’t challenge us this time. The Court approved our language unanimously.” Medical marijuana is already legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia. “Every day, doctors prescribe dangerous, addictive, and potentially deadly narcotics to their patients but can’t even suggest the use of marijuana, which has never killed a person in thousands of years of human civilization,” said Pollara. “Very soon, Florida doctors will finally have that option.” The amendment will appear in the November general election ballot as Amendment 2. www.bocaratontribune.com

Boca FC Falls to Ukrainian Giant, Shakhtar Donetsk FC, in Friendly 5-1

It was a David and Goliath match. But fear was not in Boca FC’s vocabulary. It was the reigning APSL undefeated Champions, Boca FC, against the former UEFA Champions League Champions, Shakhtar Donetsk. The friendly helps in Boca’s preparation for the US Open Cup. The starting whistle was blown and Boca FC showed that they were there to play their best soccer. The first goal came early,

when a ball was played over the defense by Gabe finding Xavier, who put the ball in the back of the net for Boca FC, two minutes into the game. “Coach Marcelo told Colby and I to always be around the play to either get the loose ball and rebound, and look, it happened,” said Xavier, the author of the first and only goal for Boca FC. But Boca FC’s efforts were nullified when on a free kick served by Kovalenko, reaches Ordets head scoring the equalizer.

Both teams felt each other out and tried shooting from 30 yards out in hopes to win the advantage,showing that they were not there to play games. Tensions started to flair and the first yellow card came at the 31 when Dentinho, for Shakhtar FC, slid in late clipping Matias. Both teams tried to penetrate the defense from the outside but all tries were unsuccessful. It wasn’t until the 36th minute when on a play down the right, Vasal plays the ball into the middle finding Zubkov, who cuts to his right, and places the ball in the lower right corner of Boca FC’s goal. Although they were up on the board it seemed like Shakhtar was out for Matias, when on a run down the left hand side he collided with Vasyl, who pushed him off of the turf on to the track. Unfortunately for Boca FC, Matias had to be sent to the hospital, where doctors delivered the news that he dislocated his shoulder and broke his hand, his injuries will keep him out for approximately 10 months. Boca FC pursued the equalizer before the

end of the half but their attempts were unsuccessful. At the start of the second half, Boca FC had some fire left in them but the flame quickly transferred over to Shakhtar. It started with Arabidze putting the ball into the back of the net at the 65th minute. Down 3-1, Boca FC continued to pursue the goal, with a beautiful one-two-touch exchange at the 73rd minute, between Xavier and Shadi, but the goal never came. Boca FC lost their fire and Shakhtar took advantage. The two goal deficit became four in the final 10 minutes of the game with a goal scored by Kovalenko and a second added at the last minute by Arabidze. In an postgame interview, Xavier comments, “all-all it was great experience and great benchmark for us as aspiring players to know that the next level is not that far from our reach and that if we keep winning championships, who knows, we all might just take this nation by storm.” Boca Raton FC will now focus their energy on the 2016 U.S. Open Cup that will begin in May.

Strikers Assistant Coach Feels Giving Players Time Off Will Pay Dividends Over Long Season

After a rigorous first month of preseason, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers players and technical staff are ready to recharge their batteries. Under a brand new coaching staff, the Strikers began preseason training on January 4, ahead of the club’s participation in the Florida Cup. It was the earliest start time for a Strikers preseason campaign. In fact, Fort Lauderdale was the first professional U.S. side to begin training in 2016. With the 2016 North American Soccer League Season still more than two months away, the technical staff feels giving the players some time off will help prevent burning over the course of the 2016 campaign. “It’s a long preseason. Uncommon,” said

assistant coach Phillip Dos Santos. “No team comes in with almost a three month preseason. It was very demanding this first month. “There were a lot of games without even having had a preseason. It was come in, train to play right away. So it’s demanding mentally and physically.” Fort Lauderdale faced their first test against FC Schalke 04 after less than a week together as a group. The club played three more international opponents in their first month: Santa Fe, Corinthians, and FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Dos Santos, along with head coach and general manager Caio Zanardi, believes the club made a positive start to the year. The time off will allow players to resume their personal lives after a demanding first month in Fort Lauderdale. “I think it’s good to give the players time to go home and spend time with their families,” added Dos Santos. “If they’re good in their social and family lives, and if they feel rested, when they return they’ll give us more.” The team returns to training on Monday, February 8. Dos Santos believes the loss in training time is actually a benefit. “Sometimes, less is more.”
