Community Lizzie Sider Takes Nashville By Storm, Prepares for Busy 2016

By Pedro Heizer

When Lizzie Sider first stepped foot into the Jackson Hole Playhouse at the age of 5 to see her first-ever play, her whole life changed. “I fell in love with everything going on on the stage,” says the 17 year old music star from Boca Raton. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do; I wanted to be the person that interacted with the audience like that.” At the age of six, Sider returned to the Jackson Hole Playhouse in Wyoming, this time however, for a Children’s Theater Camp. “They would teach you the basics of theater,” Sider recalls. “I attribute my love for performing to that playhouse, for sure.” Sider and her parents would continue to make the trip to Jackson Hole yearly and SIder would continue returning to the Jackson Hole Theater Camp until Lizzie turned 12 years old. “My parents and I sat down and said ‘we have a pretty good voice here, let’s see where this can take us,’” explained Sider. However, it was after her first trip to Nashville, at the age of 13, that “everything changed”. Sider connected with some of the heavyhitters of the country music world and began to talk to the about possible songs. In the summer of 2011, Sider wrote her debut single “Butterfly”, where she collaborated with hitmaker, Jamie O’Neal. The song has a deep personal meaning to Sider, as she was the target of bullying from kindergarten until the 4th grade. “I was a normal kid,” explains Sider. “I was always

happy, and nice to everyone. I don’t think I’ll ever know why I was the target of it.” “I wrote the song ‘Butterfly’ based on my personal experience,” continued Sider. Sider went back to that tough place and chose to create art with it. Sider remembers how the other kids would excluded her but then they would ask her to sing for them, just to run away laughing before could complete the first verse. “ It really made me feel down, and I would come home crying almost every day. I begged my parents to homeschool me, to get me out of that situation. Then, one day, before I left for school, my dad told me that nobody has the power to ruin my day,” Sider continued. She explained how she really didn’t understand what her dad was telling her but with time she grew to understand and take to heart what her father told her that day. “Nobody can take away my self-confidence or make me feel bad. I found the strength in myself to overcome the teasing, and I felt like a ‘Butterfly.’ That’s where that comes from,” Sider explained. The success of “Butterfly” and other tracks on her EP have led Sider to expand an already growing slate of live performances. She has opened for Jamie O’Neal, Aaron Tippin and Gloriana. Sider has also been a featured performer at the Ocala, FL and Inverness, FL Rodeos. She has played at writer’s nights at Nashville venues such as Hotel Indigo, The Listening Room, The Red Rooster, and Rooster’s BBQ, and has been a featured artist at the Commodore Lounge. Sider

performed multiple times at the famed Bluebird Café and played at Teddy Gentry’s (Alabama) 2013 birthday party in Nashville. Due to the success she has achieved thus far in her young career, Sider was named to the Country Music Association’s “Who’s New To Watch In 2013” list. She said that was a huge honor. “When I saw that, and I looked at the other artists, I was so excited. It was so hard to believe.” Her song “Butterfly” made the Top 40 on the Music Row Country Chart, which earned her a booth in the 2013 CMA Fest, “Being a part of the CMA Fest that year was such an honor and a cool experience,” says Sider of her experiences. In the summer of 2013, Sider began her Bully Prevention Seminar and since then she has gone to over 350 schools all over the United States and has reached over 150,000 students. During her 30-40 minute assembly, Sider talks about her own story of being teased and bullied in elementary school, what it felt like, and how she delt with it. She talks about the importance of everyone standing up to stop bullying, and sings some of her songs, including her debut single, “Butterfly”.

Sider has said she has heard from many how the lyrics spoke to \ their own situation. “I want the song to inspire others who have been hurt, bullied, or teased. Hopefully, it can help them. It amazes me what the song has already done. Someone got a tattoo because of the song. I get Facebook messages where people will call me their inspiration. They will write ‘Thank you for giving me strength.’ It just means the world to me that I can do that.” As for the immediate future, Sider plans on continuing to promote her single, and work on her album. She has recently finished recording her new DVD special where she about bullying prevention and creates a curriculum for teachers and students to follow. In December, Sider released her latest EP, Symphony, with song like “Hate To Break It To You”, and “Like a Girl”. This year, Sider will also be returning to some of the 350 schools she visited during her assemblies and will be throwing a concert for the kids, “I’m looking forward to going back to where it all began and sharing my music with them,” says Sider. “I want to lift people up and inspire them with my music, I want to become an icon that has a very positive influence and inspires people.”

Another Senseless Killing of a Young Man. Where is the Outrage? I had been away from my phone much of the day on Tuesday when upon returning I noticed I had three missed calls from my local police department. By the time I returned the calls, everyone had left for the day. It wasn’t until my minister called to inform me that Courtney McGriff - one of the young men who graduated my mentoring program - was gunned down earlier inside his home. My first thought was it had to be a robbery. Courtney was not the type of person to get involve with criminal activity – at least not involving guns. After all, he was a local businessman. Police are still trying to determine what led to his murder. They were called to his home in the first block of 14th Avenue shortly after 5 p.m., and upon arrival, they found him dead from gunshot wounds. The unofficial version is that his demise was the result of an ongoing personal feud. Another senseless killing of a young black man at the hands of another black man. In the last seven years, I have attended as

many funerals for young protégés who I mentored in the KOP Mentoring Network program. Six of those were because of gun violence. Those who knew Courtney are left wondering why this senseless killing to someone who had so much going for him. He was only 29 – Courtney had his whole life in front of him. There needs to be a sense of moral outrage. He joined the Knights of Pythagoras, as it was called then, in 2000. He had a beautiful, melodious voice. I recall us taking our boys choir to perform at churches in the tri-county area to sing. Courtney always wanted to sing, ‘Silver and Gold’ because he was the only one who could belt one of the verses with his falsetto voice. He was a jokester who loved to entertain. He had us in stitches at the annual Crime Prevention Conference in Tampa and Orlando where back in the hotel room, he would imitate the various speakers throughout the day. In his sophomore year, I encouraged him to pursue a career in mortuary science in

hopes of one day owning his own business. From an early age, Courtney was destined to be a businessman. He wanted to be “my own boss.” For several years, when we sold water and ice cream at the annual Delray Affair and a handful of other street events in the city, he wanted to be the cashier. He followed one of his mentors, the late Lamar Shuler, and studied mortuary science for a while. He worked admirably at Shuler’s Memorial Chapel in Delray Beach until he parted ways. But he found a home at another funeral home. Still Courtney was determined to be his own boss. He also studied hard and got his bounty hunter license. I recall him telling me how he wanted to be a bail bondsman and how he was studying every waking hour to pass the test. After passing the test and earning his license, he was so proud. He was on his path to becoming his own boss. He had a stint working for the city and also moonlighted as a security guard. Perhaps he was best known in the area for his role as an escort at funeral processions. In the wake of Courtney’s murder, people

are discussing it privately. But no one is talking about the number of young men being cut down without any concern. There is no outrage in the community? I find it alarming that when a black man is killed by a police officer, especially a white one, there is such an outcry from the community. Yet, when one of our young men is murdered by gunfire, the stakeholders and leaders become mum. That mindset has to change. Far too often we are losing our innocent young men to black-on-black violence at a rate that many in our society do not see as outrageous and unacceptable – at least their actions are not saying so. I am hoping this will be my last column about the sad customs that have developed in neighborhoods plagued by this senseless violence. I am tired of the makeshift memorials of teddy bears and balloons and the speed with which T-shirts bearing the victim’s likeness are produced. This kind of tragedy is not the norm and needs to be stopped. If not now, when?

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

How Consistent Are You? It is good to be consistent in all you do. But it’s far better to be flexible when certain situations may legitimately require it. There are people who boast of being consistent in all circumstances, and that offers them the excuse of remaining offensive toward others, and doing certain things in just one way, instead of choosing a better way which in most situations can be easily found. A person’s consistency needs not be lopsided, but it should always lean in the direction of acting honestly at all times, doing good for others periodically, practicing truthfulness in all relationships and transactions, in whatever circumstance one may be found!

Of course, there are several who are consistent in doing what is improper and not right. To those I simply issue an invitation: “Abandon practices that won’t ever lead you forward, and choose instead the company of persons who can aid you in consistent, positive, winning ways!” Usually, what is not the ideal in life comes quite naturally to most human beings. That’s what needs to be known ahead of time, and carefully checked always! Those are the attitudes and practices to be rejected, without leaving any empty spaces, for they should quickly be replenished with an honorable and more fruitful life-style.

Those choosing to advance with consistency, will equally notice that such attitude will not be limited only to certain aspects of living; they need to affect every sphere of human activity and permeate every sector of our individual operation in society. It’s imperative to understand also, that even in our consistency in doing what is proper and commendable, there may be situations where employing some flexibility is far more preferable. We need to be attentive to all we do, and of all the circumstances in which we find ourselves. There are occasions when common sense has a right to dictate what our best option would be in

fulfilling a task, in executing common practices, in interacting with others. Perhaps it is in human relationships where a greater deal of flexibility needs to be employed, depending on conditions that may have changed, on the personal needs of those we are negotiating with, and in countless more factors which shall be recognized once we get there. It’s equally wise and necessary that we operate with varied alternatives to the situations we most frequently encounter in our daily journeys and contacts. Persons who are inflexible seldom reach a pleasant conclusion in any pathway taken.

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Boca Man Sentenced in Theft of $274k in New York State Benefits By CRA News Service

A Boca Raton man whom authorities said stole $274,920.16 in New York State pension benefits meant for his deceased mother, must do jail time, a New York judge has ruled. An Albany County Court judge Peter A. Lynch on Thursday sentenced Marc Eletz, 70, to five months in jail and ordered him to pay $200,000 in restitution along with a signed confession of judgement for $74,920.16 – the remainder of the stolen benefits. Eletz’s father, Milton Eletz, was a retired New York State employee who died in 1988. Milton Eletz received reduced monthly benefits so his wife, Fay Eletz, would continue to get the benefits after his death, a press release from the Attorney General’s and Comptroller’s offices said. From 1992 until July 2014, the benefits were deposited into a joint account held by Eletz and Fay Eletz, who died in April 2001, according to the release. However, Marc Eletz continued to receive

benefits he was not entitled to until July of last year. Eletz failed to report his mother’s death in 2001, prosecutors said. “Mr. Eletz thought he could steal his mother’s pension, but we exposed his theft and recovered nearly $275,000 for the retirement system, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said. “I thank Attorney General [Eric T.] Schneiderman for partnering with us to prosecute these crimes.” Eletz received $276,721.24 from the joint account after his mother died and he liquidated all but $1,801.08 of the pension benefits from the State and Local Employees Retirement Systems, the release said. The case was part of the Operation Integrity partnership between the Attorney General and Comptroller, conducted with the Comptroller’s Division of Investigations. This case is the latest joint investigation under the Operation Integrity partnership of the Attorney General and Comptroller which has resulted in Dozens have been convicted and more than $6 million pain in restitution as part of the case, authorities said.

The Laubner’s were already familiar with the area of Boca Raton, so when it came time to expand the brand, they didn’t think twice. In July of 2015, construction for Clive Daniel Home began, and many were optimistic. On the corner of Glades Rd. and Boca Raton Blvd., the location was ideal and as people passed by curiosity grew as to what was being built. Little did they know that a full service design studio was about to open its doors. South Florida and more specifically Boca Raton, being a very large second home market, has many other furniture stores around town. But General Manager, Lori Mutobaya assures that Clive Daniel Home is not your typical home furniture store. “We’re a middle to high end design studio with 33 designers on staff that just happens to have a design team of over 33 designers to help you style your home from the mailbox to the swimming pool,” explained Mutobaya. Clive Daniel Home has a 70,000 sq-foot showroom with a contemporary, linear presentation, with a cafe, along with kitchen and closet customization rooms. Mutobaya goes on to explain how their intention for the customer as they walk through the

doors is to inspire them. “Everything on the floor was handpicked by our on staff designers, who are the best in the area and in Boca, to inspire people,” said Mutobaya. Clive Daniel Home is a full service design studio that seeks to fulfill all of their customers needs when it comes to styling and renovating their home. “We do window treatments, kitchen remodeling, flooring, but if you want buy a couch we have that too,” Mutobaya continues. But Clive Daniel Home doesn’t want to be just another furniture store, Mutobaya expresses how they want to be a part of the community. Clive Daniel Home has a chat room which is free to charities to use to organize events. The chat room has internet, chairs, a tv and webcam for any video chat sessions. The room can be booked by appointment, all that is needed is a call and the room is yours free of charge. “We want to work with local designers, local businesses, and charities. The gentleman who works works across the street and brings us lunch every day, we know him by name and we know him. The idea is that we are part of the community,” Mutobaya continues, “we’re just not in a building trying to sell furniture, we want to be part of the community.”

Amy, sitting at the white table painted by herself. “This way you don’t have to go all over the place looking for that certain piece,” Amy added. It’s All About the Art, brings original pieces from local artists in all kinds of artistic mediums, up to 50 percent of the price of a regular hanging gallery. The art they offer ranges from the price point of $100 to $3,000. Already representing a variety of artists, they are always willing to take in more. Being artists themselves, behind the showroom is their studio, where they create their own art. “[With It’s All About the Art] we were able to create, business and studio wise,” said Deborah, about the dual function of their gallery. “It’s all about sharing,” continued Deborah, when asked what art is. And It’s All About the Art does just that. It gives the artists exposure and a creates a more personal experience to buying art. As well as create your own art, as they hope to open up art classes to the public this summer. So sit down, relax, have a cup of coffee, but remember it’s all about the art.

New Downtown Condominium Project Awaits Approval

by Vincenzo Bellini

Boca Raton is known for its beautiful beaches, quiet living, and beautiful art boutiques. With the center of all the art in downtown Boca Raton, with the Boca Raton Art Museum and various art boutiques in Mizner Park, it can be hard to compete. But travel 5 minutes west, and the term art boutique has a different concept. Having had their start in Delray, formerly known as AR Gallery, Amy Reshefsky and Deborah Rader, had a vision. To bring original art in a more accessible way, and a more affordable price, not only to decorators and collectors but also to the general public. With a change in location, now in the 11th Street industrial park, and a name change, It’s All About the Art had its Grand Opening on the week of Jan. 17. As you walk in, the minimalist decor gives guests a nice welcoming feel. The front door leads to a room full of paintings, but what draws the eye is straight ahead. There hangs a painting of the featured Artist of the Month. To the left there is a nice white table with chairs, which serves as a part of the studio’s new concept. Due to the lack of wall space, they came up with the idea to have 3 ringed binders for each artist that they represent. In those binders, each divider is a specific type of art form; from canvas, to glass, metal sculptures, clay sculptures, etc. “This way you can sip on some coffee and pick out the pieces you would like,” said

Elad National Properties have finished plans on Mizner 200, which if approved, will replace the aging Mizner on the Green complex. Elad’s CEO, Amnon Safran, said that the nine story luxury condominium, with units that average around 2,000 square feet, meets all the requirements laid out in Ordinance #4035, and will submit the finalized plans for the project in February for approval. Prior to Mizner 200, Elad had submitted plans for New Mizner on the Green, which consisted of four towers which averaged around 300 feet, which violated Boca’s height restriction for buildings in the downtown area. The height restriction is currently at 100 feet, although the city council have allowed a few exemptions, such as the 140 feet tall Mark at CityScape. World-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, who designed One World Trade Center in Manhattan and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, had been hired by Elad to design the four towers for the New Mizner on the Green project. However, Elad have revealed that Libeskind

has not returned for Mizner 200, and that the project was designed by architectural firm Garcia Stromberg, who have previously designed multiple buildings in Boca, such as the Boca Beach Club and One Thousand Ocean. Elad have stated that given Mizner 200’s pedestrian-friendly design and close proximity to downtown, residents will be encouraged to leave their vehicles in their parking spaces in favor of walking around town. They also said that the complex will feature “more than 40% green space,” and have a minimal impact on traffic in the area.

Marleen Forkas’s Birthday Celebration On Saturday evening my husband, Bob and I attended Marleen Forkas’s birthday celebration on the FAU Campus, Harold and Marleen Forkas Bldg. About 100 or so of Marleen’s closest friends gathered to celebrate her special number birthday. A tent was set up for the cocktail reception followed by a sit down dinner in the beautiful dining room of the building. A D.J. played dance music all evening. After dinner a huge birthday cake rolled in and Marleen, the wearer of many hats besides me, made the grand entrance in a happy birthday hat with candles. We danced, we ate and we sang Happy Birthday to this special lady who is so involved in our Boca Community. Happy Birthday and many more dear friend. All in all a classy and elegant fun evening.

weeks.” Rodriguez says he is bringing back by popular demand the rare, massive carillon instrument of bronze bells. As part of the Voyage to the Orient, there will be dragon boat races on the Quiet Waters Lake. Favorite acts include “The Harper and the Minstrel,” “Trash or Treasure,” “The Kelly Irish Dancers,” “The Duelists,” magic with “Moonie the Magnificent,” “Buckle & Swash: The Cobblestone Characters” and “Caroline Williams Liberty Horse Act.” Themed weekends are as follows. • “Swashbucklers & Sirens” Feb. 13-15. • “Vikings & Valkyries” Feb. 20-21. • “Fantasy and Adventure” Feb. 26-28. • “Voyage to the Orient” March 5-6. • “Kilts & Colleens” March 12-13. • “Time Travelers’ Weekend” March 19-20. • “Carnivale Masquerade” March 26-27. Hours are 10 a.m. until sunset. Tickets are $21 adults and $9 children 6-11 years (under 5 free). Season passes are $75. Call 800-3-REN-FES or go to www.ren-fest. com.

Poster, Essay Contest Encourages Students to Practice Good Dental Health Students all across Palm Beach County will be spending much of this month writing or drawing about good oral hygiene as part of a contest. The inaugural Children’s Essay/Poster Contest, was launched Feb. 1 and runs through Feb. 26, to run in conjunction with National Children’s Dental Health Month, organizers said. This is a time when dental professionals, healthcare providers and teachers all team up to discuss the importance of oral health with students and their caregivers,” said organizer Lisa Medina, of Family Medicaid Dental Center in Delray Beach. “Locally, we want to bring the same level of attention so we are sponsoring this contest to generate some excitement.” The contest is divided into two categories: kindergarten to 2nd grade and 3rd through 12th grades. The students were given three topics from which to choose one: “The Importance of Dental Care,” “Dental Care is Important to Health” or “My First Day at the Dental Office.” The younger students are asked to express themselves through art on an 8 ½ inch by

11 inch paper while the older children must write a 250-word essay on one of the three topics. “Already several schools have indicated that their students are chipping away at this,” said Robert Dodd, program manager for KOP Mentoring Network, which is organizing the event. “I can’t wait to see the entries. It seems there is going to be some excitement.” Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in both divisions. “All the prizes are fun-filled and fun-related,” Medina said. “We have prizes to places such as amusement centers, water parks and ice cream parlors. All the winners will be happy with their prizes.” Prizes will also be awarded to the teachers of the winning students, Medina said. “We want to generate as much interest as possible,” she said. “We want to get everybody involved.” The entries will be judged by an independent panel of community members and winners will be recognized at the Delray Dental Day festival on Saturday, March 19 at Village Academy. For more information, call 561-537-1015. or 561-665-0151.

Mentoring Fully Trained ‘Apprentices’ Many vocational trades, including plumbers, carpenters, electricians and other skilled crafts, over the years have utilized apprentice programs to train the next generation of workers entering their particular vocation. The novice worker comes alongside a veteran in the profession, learning what to do and how it should be done, both through observation and hands-on practice. In the business and professional world, a similar strategy is often implemented, although the term “apprentice” is rarely used. Instead, this approach for training sometimes takes shape in the form of a mentorship or internship. Mentoring might take a variety of forms, and may be carried out as part of a formalized program that is part of each person’s job description, or a more informal, relationally oriented process. Either way, a more seasoned executive or staff member serving as a mentor can be of great benefit in helping a newer employee become established with the company. The question sometimes arises, “What is our goal in mentoring?” It is valid to ask this. In fact, it is an important consideration if the activity of mentoring is to have the desired outcome. The purpose might not only be to prepare and equip the individuals for specific roles or responsibilities, but also to help them in understanding and embracing the company culture and values. In the corporate world, multi-generational family businesses are rare, especially beyond the second generation, and one reason is the failure to pass along values and practices that made a company successful at its start. People being mentored also can observe company veterans, seeing how they handle certain situations, particularly under stress.

As a wise person once said, some things are more easily caught than taught. Finding a good, consistent role model to mentor can go a long way in developing a good employee. Whenever possible, allowing a new or prospective employee the opportunity to shadow an experienced worker can be an effective way to train and equip your next round of leaders. Without these opportunities, many young people will make costly mistakes and have greater likelihood of failure. In this mentoring/apprenticeship process, one important consideration must remain foremost: The person serving as mentor must be someone worthy to teach and model. It is said, “Practice makes perfect,” but that is untrue if you practice imperfectly. A mentor that does substandard work, or exhibits unacceptable values or ethics, cannot train newer staff people how to perform at a higher, more desirable level. As Jesus said in Luke 6:40, “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” In leading His own followers, Jesus demonstrated that people cannot teach – or mentor – above the standard by which they themselves are working and living. Or as Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man (or woman) sharpens another.” For this reason, in training someone new in your profession, be intentional about assigning him or her to shadow one of your best people, someone in your organization that is highly valued. Hopefully, the newer person eventually will end up being like the mentor – another top contributor to your company.

Accident On Palmetto Park Road Leaves One Dead, Another In Serious Condition By Casey Westfall

An accident that happened at 1700 West Palmetto Park Road early Friday morning, Feb. 5 left one driver dead, and another in serious condition. Shortly after midnight, Christopher Torres Pereira, 25, attempted to turn left onto westbound Palmetto Park Road in his 2009 Honda Civic after getting off northbound I-95, but was stuck in the driver’s side by a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder was being driven by Carol

Degrave, 58, of Boca Raton who was driving in the left through lane on eastbound Palmetto Park Road. Pereira, whose residence remains unknown, was declared dead at the scene, while Degrave was removed from her vehicle and transported via ambulance to Delray Medical Center. Boca Raton Police advise anyone who might have further information related to the accident to contact Adam Reisner, the department’s Traffic Homicide Investigator, at (561) 620-6121.

sports Matheus Carvalho Brings Champions League Experience To Fort Lauderdale

A big addition to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers attacking corps was made today as the club announced the signing of 23 year-old forward Matheus Carvalho. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Matheus, who goes by his first name, most

recently suited up for AS Monaco in Ligue 1, the top flight of French football. He featured in both legs of the club’s 2014-15 Champions League quarterfinal matches against the competition’s eventual finalists, Juventus.

“We want to attract top prospects to the club, and Matheus Carvalho brings top quality experience from European football,” said Head Coach and General Manager Caio Zanardi. “Matheus is a modern forward: fast, versatile, dangerous in the box. He adds further attacking flair to the roster, and knows how to score goals.” A former youth international, Matheus played alongside current Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar. In 2007, Matheus scored the goal that gave Brazil the South American Under-15 Football Championship. Last season, Matheus made eight league appearances for Monaco after joining the club on loan during the winter transfer window. Playing in the attack alongside the likes of current and former Premier League stars Anthony Martial and Dimitar Berbatov, Matheus scored one league goal for Monaco, notching the second tally in a 3-0 win over S.C. Bastia in March. Matheus helped Monaco achieve a third-

place finish in the 2014-15 campaign, earning qualification to the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. “The class of players the new Strikers regime has been able to attract is becoming even more evident with recent signings,” said Managing Director Luis Cuccatti. “The technical staff has done tremendous work to secure the signature of Matheus and we are confident he will be a real asset to the club.” Despite his youth, Matheus has already enjoyed winning the Série A with Fluminense in 2010 and 2012. He has also been Campeonato Carioca champion in 2012 as well as the Copa Catarina in 2013. The Brazilian will link up with his new side for preseason training immediately. Having watched the Strikers play in the Florida Cup, the left-footed speedster is eager to add further international experience he has gained playing in Europe and make an impact with the Strikers.

Esteban Toledo continued his playoff success Sunday, beating Billy Andrade on the third extra hole to win the Allianz Championship on a cold, windy day at Broken Sound Club. Toledo made a 4-foot par putt at the 17th hole after Andrade’s 6-foot par try lipped out. Toledo has won three of his four PGA Tour Champions titles in playoffs, and each has come on the third hole. “Being in a playoff isn’t easy,” said Toledo, who shot 68 to finish at 11-under 205 on The Old Course. “There’s a lot of stress and a lot of nerves. Sometimes I surprise myself how well I play in tough conditions.” Andrade (67) was looking for his fourth victory on the 50-and-older circuit in the last 10 months, but he bogeyed the 16th hole and missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole in regulation. “I just hit a very poor putt,” Andrade said. “I probably hit the worst putt I’ve hit in

quite a while. I got a little quick. I was thinking about winning instead of thinking about making the putt.” It looked like Andrade was going to lose on the first playoff hole when his second shot landed in the palmetto bushes, but he saved par. They each parred the 18th hole again before Andrade missed the 17th green with a pitching wedge from the fairway. Andrade’s birdie chip almost went in but rolled past the hole. It was the fourth playoff in the last seven years at the Allianz Championship. Tom Byrum shot the best round of the tournament, an 8-under 64, to jump from 32nd into a third-place tie with Jeff Sluman (70). Tom Lehman could have made it a threeway playoff, but he failed to birdie the par-5 18th, which played the easiest on the course (4.47). A bogey dropped Lehman (72) into fifth place. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong on the last hole,” Lehman said. “But it was a very tough day to play. Very pleased with the way I played.” Second-round leader Corey Pavin extended his advantage to two shots on the front nine but made six bogeys and faded to 10th after a 75. Pavin has just one victory in 112 starts on the PGA Tour Champions, and that came at the 2012 Allianz Championship.
