Mizner 200 Final Plans Submitted To The City

By Casey Westfall

Elad National Properties submitted finalized plans for the Mizner 200 luxury condominium complex to the City of Boca Raton on Tuesday. If approved, the condo would replace the Mizner on the Green apartments, which have occupied the space east of SE Mizner Blvd for close to two decades. The Plantation-based firm previously tried to replace Mizner on the Green back in 2014 with New Mizner on the Green, Continue on page 3

which consisted of four towers averaging at 300 feet designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, but since buildings in downtown are not permitted to exceed 100 feet, the plan was not approved by the city. The plan for Mizner 200 is a single nine-

story building designed by Jorge Garcia and Peter Stromberg. “The building respects its dual responsibility to the street and urban environment as well as the vast open park space of the surrounding golf course and views to the east,” said Garcia and Stromberg. “The

Boca Raton’s Central Beach To Be Pumped Up With Sand

response is a building that sets up a more structured rhythm and appropriate character along Mizner Boulevard, then unfolds and opens up at the corners to express the beauty of its other environment.” The building meets all the requirements stated in Ordinance #4035. It consists of 384 residential units, which is 138 more than Mizner on the Green, and each unit averages at 2,200 square feet. In addition to condominiums, Mizner 200 will also feature villas facing the Boca Raton Golf Club. Elad have stated that the front of Mizner 200 will be reminiscent of a park, and feature lush landscaping. “Neighboring residents and businesses as well as visitors will enjoy the new parkstyled pedestrian streetscape along SE Mizner Boulevard that we have incorporated into the plan to create a seamless connectivity with Royal Palm Place shops, spas, salons, art galleries and restaurants,” said Amnon Safran, the CEO of Elad National Properties. The firm intends for Mizner 200 to be pedestrian friendly, and it will feature more open space than Mizner on the Green, and

the entire project is designed to have little impact on traffic in the area. Regarding tenants of Mizner on the Green, Elad have issued formal notices to both current and potential residents about the potential demolition of the complex, but Safran insists that residents will not be upset. “Historically 50 percent of Mizner on the Green residents do not renew as they reside there for temporary reasons as they renovate or build homes, need to relocate for jobs and preferred schools, are seeking to purchase single-family homes or condos or want a different type of rental than a three-story townhome,” says Safran. “If they want to stay in Downtown, there will be plenty of brand new inventory as more than 2,000 rental residences become available.” If the plans are approved by the city, they will allow ample time for all residents of Mizner on the Green to relocate before commencing demolition of Mizner on the Green, and beginning construction of Mizner 200.

Boca Raton’s Central Beach will have a makeover starting the first week of March, as crews will be pumping sand from south of Red Reef Park to the Inlet. Storms tend to wash away the sand from beaches. By pumping sand onto the beach, it will help to nourish it and make it wider. The total of 530,000 cubic yards of sand to be pumped into the beach. The construction had a cost of approximately $11 million. “The beach will be open, with certain segments closing as work is being done and then opening as they move south,” said Chrissy Biagiotti, the city’s communications and marketing manager.

The construction will cause some noise due to the equipment’s backing up sounds, as a safety measurement required by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. Wildlife, consisting mostly of sea turtles and shore birds, will be constantly monitored by the city. Biagiotti stated that construction will shut down if necessary. According to Biagiotti, the amount of sand to be pumped, has a lifespan of approximately 10 years. Crews will be covering nearly 800 feet during every 24 hour period. The project is expected to be done by the end of April, if the weather doesn’t not delay the construction.

Our Elected Officials Deserve a Raise Are the elected officials in Boca Raton paid enough? Taxpayers are expected to decide in the August presidential primary election whether to give the mayor and council members a raise. The city council recently voted 4-1 to ask the voters to settle the issue. While I am a big proponent of volunteer service, I am in favor of giving them a fair stipend considering the amount of work that accompanies the job. And while I think that compensation for civic service should not be expected in what should essentially be a volunteer job, I also think that if the salary was higher, it would likely attract a kind of competent person who might otherwise be more concerned about the city’s affairs than their salary. The mayor currently makes roughly $750 a month or $9,200 annually. Under the proposal, that stipend would increase to

$38,355 annually. That is about 40 percent of what a Palm Beach County commissioner makes. The four city council members earn $600 a month or $7,200 annually. This plan, if passed, will increase their pay to $28,776 per year, or 30 percent of a county commissioner’s salary. The last time our city council members received a salary increase was in 1984. They pushed again in 2004 and 2006 to get an increase but both attempts failed. If approved, the new pay hike should put their salaries in par with salaries of other elected officials around Palm Beach County. It is important to know that Boca Raton is the largest of the three cities in the southern part of the county. Yet, council members are the lowest paid in the tri-city area. The mayor in Boynton Beach earns a base salary of $18,809.42 while city com-

missioners earn $15,675.18. And in Delray Beach, the mayor receives $13,000 and commissioners $9,970 annually respectively. I think the pay our elected officials receive is certainly not proportional to the amount of time many put into the job. They go to meetings and community events, they field concerns and complaints daily from the residents they represent. Our elected officials also serve on as many as 13 state, regional and county boards, as well as attend retreats and conferences that can last several days. And then they are invited to several events around town. Generally, if they attend, they are expected to speak. I am sure that between attending meetings, answering calls and emails from city staff and citizens, reviewing proposals and agendas, appearing at events, going to

conferences and everything else, they spend almost as much time on city business as they do on their day jobs. If voters approve the salary hike, it will take effect October 1, 2016. I also think Boca Raton has grown to the size where it needs a full time mayor. When you look around town at the growth, it only makes sense that the style of government changes with the times. Take West Palm Beach, for example, which has a mayor-led government, the point can be made that the type of leadership is largely responsible for the city’s success. There would still be a need to an administrator or perhaps two assistant managers to assist the mayor. However, that is a topic for another column.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Everybody Experiences Suffering! Since creation, suffering has been an inescapable component of the human condition. It comes in varied ways, and affects individuals physically, emotionally, and mentally primarily, besides some other varieties that also impact lives directly or indirectly! There are kinds of suffering that certain persons bring upon themselves, often preceded by warnings from family, friends, and others, or on account of careless living. They insist on doing certain things, not bothering about the consequences, whenever these may come, as long as they “enjoy” in the now what they choose to experience! Other types of suffering can also come

irrespective of our personal decision or control. They may result from an accident which we had no part in bringing upon ourselves, through personal harm which others may have inflicted on us, or on account of an illness, or prolonged deprivation of items necessary for our proper maturation in the world. In many ways it’s correct to recognize and affirm that life on earth is synonymous with pain and distress. Happy surprises also occur to any life, from time to time, but the norm appears to be some form of incompleteness, and its consequent trouble, that accompanies humans till their death.

One problem from suffering is that in many cases it’s impossible to undo the damage they’ve already brought into a life. Yet, a key, wise personal deed a person can secure, is to stop whatever may have brought some initial suffering into one’s life, and stay away from it altogether. This often relates to vices and other practices that can and should be avoided altogether. As I have often remarked, people can recover from suffering, though not altogether from the experience of having suffered; scars often remain, memories may force one to relive some painful, past moments, besides lingering consequences that may

still afflict one expectedly, or totally by surprise! The best procedure for anyone is to avoid whatever might bring unnecessary injury now or later, to give heed to what experienced people or professional experts may tell us about many of life’s harmful surprises, as well as to have courage to face whatever may affect us at any moment of our development, while always seeking the aid that Almighty God can provide to anyone who diligently seeks it from Him!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Junior’s Opens First Location Outside Northeast in Boca Raton

By Casey Westfell

For over six decades, Junior’s cheesecake has been a beloved staple of Brooklyn, and now New Yorkers living in South Florida can rejoice, because Junior’s is opening up

their first location in South Florida here in Boca Raton. The owner of Junior’s, Alan Rosen, has confirmed that the company is leasing a space in Boca’s Mizner Park that was formerly occupied by Ruby Tuesday’s. The restaurant will seat a total of 270 patrons, and will feature a full bar, retail bakery, and take-out services. The menu will feature close to 200 items, featuring what Rosen describes as “Brooklyn comfort food,” including corned beef, pastrami, sirloin steak, and of course, their iconic cheesecake. This will be the first Junior’s location outside of the Northeast, but if things go well for Rosen, it definitely will not be the only one. The brand has already announced that they are interested in opening a Junior’s in Miami, but Rosen wants to focus on the Boca location before plans for a new restaurant are considered. Junior’s is scheduled to open in Mizner Park September 2016.

Boca Raton is booming with new businesses and Dizengoff Boca Raton, LLC have plans to meet those needs. As of December, Dizengoff filed the application to build a new commercial office building on 900 Peninsula Corporate Cir. located by the Hilton Garden Inn. The plan, which is awaiting approval from the city of Boca Raton, is for a 7-story, 120,000-square-foot office building on a

3.87 acre plot of land that was bought off of a foreclosure in 2010. The previous plan for the lot was a 81,891-square-foot office space, however they were approached by a new company for the idea of the 7-story building. Hopeful for the expansion, which would have a structured parking lot attached, the plans are for the new commercial building are awaiting the city of Boca Raton approval.

City of Boca Raton Forms New Community Advisory Panel By Casey Westfall

During a meeting on Tuesday, February 9, the Boca Raton City Council appointed the first set of members to the city’s new Community Advisory Panel. The council created the panel as a means for citizens of Boca Raton to address issues relating to quality of life in the city, and consists of 11 council-appointed members who will meet at least four times a year, including one town hall style meeting where citizens may attend and address the panel directly. City rules state that the panel’s duty is to provide citizens of Boca a public forum in which city residents may state their views, and express their needs in regards to quality-of-life issues. It will also act as a clearinghouse for information pertinent to resident’s needs and interests, and encouraging mutual respect and understanding amongst residents regardless of age or background. In addition, the panel will appoint volunteers to serve on temporary subcommittees with the objective of completing specific tasks or concerns, and will present the City Council with recommendations for qualityof-life related policies and programs. Each January, the panel will be required to

present City Council with an annual report of their recommendations and observations. The panel is the successor to four advisory boards, which were dissolved in an attempt to use assets and funds from taxpayers in more a practical manner. The boards that the Community Advisory Panel replaces are the Community Relations Board, the Education Advisory Board, Elder Affairs Advisory Board, and the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities. Members of the board will serve staggered terms, and must be citizens of the City of Boca Raton. The members appointed by the City Council are Linda Weiss Rose, Jay Van Vechten, Ashton Parfitt, Jon Carter, Lawrence Katz, Evelyn Panagakos Lamia, Charles Farthing, Eric Gooden, Deborah Carmen, and Terry Randolph. All of the members of the panel formerly served on one of the boards that the Community Advisory Panel replaces, for the exception of Jon Carter, who is the student body president of Palm Beach State College’s Boca Raton campus. The first meeting of the panel will take place in April.

Boca Raton Being Sued For Synagogue By Alyssa Lamp

Two Boca Raton residents have filed a federal lawsuit against the city alleging it provided special treatment to the Chabad of East Boca. When the city approved Chabad’s request to allow a 40-foot building in an area that typically limits building size to 30 feet, residents opposed to the project said they would prefer if the synagogue were smaller. The $8 million, 18,000-square-foot project will exceed by 20 feet the city’s maximum height of 30 feet. Rabbi Ruvi New found this location, at 770 E. Palmetto Park Road, to be ideal. Ideal because of its proximity to his flock of 75 families, who for religious reasons, prefers walking to attend Sabbath services on Friday nights and Saturdays. Opponents have argued the project will increase traffic and noise, and poorly match surrounding properties. It’s been called one of the most contentious construction projects in the history of the city. Residents Gerald Gagliardi and Kathleen MacDougall are alleging the city participated in secret dealings related to the project and violated citizen’s’ First Amendment rights. The lawsuit filed asks the court to stop the development of the land, which is zoned for local business. Kathleen owns a home adjacent Por La Mar neighborhood and campaigned heavily. She handed out fliers and had hundreds sign a petition against the project. Even though Kathleen is not able to make any comments at this time, on her Facebook page, “SaveBocaBeaches From Over

Development” she says, “This is not a beach restoration group! We are ‘Pro City Codes’. Boca Raton’s beach community is comprised of the barrier island east of the intra-coastal. For decades, voters have demanded this stretch of land be safeguarded by limited density, open access to mainland bridges and peaceful enjoyment of our homes and neighborhoods. Boca’s public beach corridor extending from Camino and A1A to 40th Street must allow free flow of traffic on and off the island for all visitors, students and residents of Boca Raton. Especially in times of emergency evacuation.” She also commented in an interview back in April of last year that “the [planned] synagogue is a beautiful building, but it’s a commercial building they’re trying to squeeze in.” Kathleen and Gerald have hired a leading church/state constitutional law scholar from New York to handle their case. Marci Hamilton is chairwoman of Public Law at the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in New York. They are not the only ones taking a stand, Boca SOB (Save Our Beaches), is also fighting back. They have petitions up, fighting any development by the beaches and are holding a “Save Our Beaches Day”. They invite everyone to come out and join hand in hand at North Ocean Blvd, to stop new developments. Not only the synagogue, but a mansion being developed along the beach also. Should the synagogue be built, it would be the first religious structure in Boca Raton east of the Intracoastal Waterway, just blocks from the beach.

“No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness-“ Aristotle. If you have ever thought there is a fine line between genius and madness, you may be right. “Touched With Fire” is a movie about bipolar disorders written and directed by Paul Dalio, who is bipolar himself. It is inspired by a book written by bipolar psychologist Kay Jamison. “Touched With Fire” is also a love story between two artists who meet in a psychiatric hospital. Emily, who calls herself Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) who calls himself Luna, are both poets. Carla’s bipolar disorder caused her to drop out of college. Marco, is in a manic phase (bipolar is also called manic-depressive) in which he has stopped eating and sleeping and literally can’t sit still. The conventional treatment of bipolar disorders is with tranquilizers or anti-anxiety medications; “downers” if you will. The problem with that is it dulls the creative impulses. This is quite a dilemma for an artist who gets inspiration from the manic phase. While “Touched With Fire” is a love story

Mayor Haynie

between two similarly-afflicted people, it is a very different love story. The parents of Carla and Marco (Christine Lahti, Bruce Altman and Griffin Dunne) feel they are bad for each other. When they are forced apart, rebelliously they get back together. When they are chased by police Marco does something really crazy that nearly gets them both killed. Theirs is clearly a case of you can’t live together and you can’t live apart. Then something else happens to deepen their bond yet drive them farther apart. Katie Holmes does the best work of her career as Carla. This is no ordinary mad woman. She is sweet and charming and caring, but there is something she just can’t control. I am not familiar with Canadian actor Luke Kirby, but he does a convincing job as the even more screwed up Marco. “Touched With Fire” is not depressing, although there is no simple happy ending. It is educational. Stick around to the end credits and see how many famous artists and writers may have been bipolar. Rating:  1/2

Palm Beach Public Schools Earn an “A” From State

By CRA News Service

Palm Beach Public Schools once again received an “A” grade from the Florida Department of Education in an accountability report released recently. And all the schools in Boca received an A except Coral Sunset Elementary and Hammock Pointe Elementary School, which earned a B. In Delray Beach, Atlantic High School, Banyan Creek Elementary and Morakimi Park Elementary earned an A and S.D. Spady received a B. Carver Middle, Pine Grove Elementary and Plumosa School of the Arts received a C. The scores are the first round of school grades based on a new formula calculated by the department this year. The scores are also the first round of letter grades the department has given since Florida transitioned to the Florida Standards Assessment, the Common Core-aligned test which replaced the FCAT last year. School Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa said the results are difficult to gauge. “It’s hard to give an accurate school grade without taking into account student progress,” Avossa said. “The goal of the School District is to have every student be on grade level or above and learning gains are critical in capturing this achievement.” Last year some students across the state experienced challenges during the computer testing of the Florida Standards Assessment.

The DOE released the grades seven months later than usual after the state Legislature required a review of the newly implemented Florida Standards Assessment. About 65 percent of the FSA questions came from a Utah test without any vetting from Florida school administrators and teachers. An alarming number of technical issues with the computerized test arose, too. For the first time since 2002, the state is not incorporating learning gains in the calculation. Learning gains are the amount of growth a student has made from one year to the next in a particular subject. The new formula to calculate school grades was changed substantially from 2014, focusing on student achievement components (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), learning gains (beginning in 2015-16), graduation rates, acceleration success (in both middle school and high school), and maintaining a focus on students who need the most support. “As a district we strongly support an accountability system that accurately measures student performance,” Avossa said. “Please know that our School Board and I are fully committed to ensuring that every student in Palm Beach County receives a world class education.” Throughout the state, the preliminary grades given out for 3,219 schools show that 1,169 schools received A grades and 642 were given a B. A total of 184 schools earned an F grade while 365 schools were given a D. Some 859 schools got a C grade. Broward and Miami-Dade counties both earned a “B.” School grades were delayed because the state had to come up with passing scores for the new test. School superintendents wanted to pause school grades for this year based on the troubled rollout of the new test last spring. “We must celebrate the hard work of our students, teachers and principals and acknowledge that these grades in some cases do not adequately reflect the work done in all our schools,” Avossa said.

Her anticipation helped her overlook all the times he had missed other such events because of his work, which often involved making business trips out of town. Then, the day before the recital, her father’s boss called. Would history repeat, she wondered, as her father talked to his employer? Would he be called out of town again? From what Maria could overhear, she knew her father was doing his best to excuse himself from making the trip. But as soon as he hung up it was obvious he had been unsuccessful. He would have to be on a flight that evening. His attendance at the recital would not be possible. Maria did her best to act grown up. After all, she was nearly ten years old. But this time her sadness was more painful than she could ever remember. “Why does Daddy’s work always have to come ahead of our important family times?” she wondered. Struggling with having to disappoint his daughter once again, her father pondered a similar question. “I enjoy my work, but I hate to let my family down time after time. Is there not a way I can have a successful career without having to sacrifice my family to achieve it?” QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. “Faith, family and work” – for many of us, this represents a healthy ranking of priorities. But even with the best intentions, reality can often reverse these priorities. Work pushes its way to the top of the list, whether we want it there or not. How can we most effectively carve out time for the most important things, making sure we manage our priorities, rather than letting them manage us? 2. What could Maria’s father do to strengthen his bond with his daughter, especially if this latest business trip is unavoidable and he knows he must disappoint Maria once more? 3. Can – or should – employers and employees reach some kind of understanding and agreement on family and personal priorities in advance, so that important events aren’t eclipsed by work matters? Or do employers only have a responsibility for

making certain their customers and shareholders are treated properly and deadlines are met, no matter what it takes? Explain your answer. BEST PRACTICES Businesses fall short when they disregard or fail to recognize the priority of family. In their quest to serve the “bottom line,” they ignore the reality that their employees are multi-dimensional people, individuals whose lives have important facets that exist outside of the workplace. The best businesses, ones that boast the most contented and loyal workers, strive to become and remain family-friendly. These companies understand their most productive and effective employees enjoy happy family lives. Because of this, they seek to reinforce family values in their policies and practices. FOR FURTHER CONSIDERATION It is tempting to put the needs of a business first and foremost, but wise leaders realize that enduring values must be embraced – such as offering the opportunity to properly balance personal and professional demands. And in the process, companies often find themselves becoming more productive – and prosperous. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”(Matthew 6:33). Some companies seem intent on draining the last amount of energy and productivity from their staff, but doing some often comes at a high cost for everyone involved. So emotional and relational needs of everyone in the organization merit serious consideration. “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity” (Ephesians 5:15-16). Sadly, the business and professional world is littered with the devastation of families damaged by workers who failed to establish and nourish important relationships within their homes. Often this “wreckage” is beyond repair. This is all the more reason employers should strive to honor important family relationships and priorities. In most cases a happy home, especially one centered around faith in God, makes for happy workers. “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…” (Malachi 4:6)

Lynn University Dedicates Yvonne S. Boice Circle of Flags Lynn University’s circle of flags is a popular and well-recognized campus icon that represents a global student body and the more than 100 nations from which students hail. On Thursday, Feb. 11, the circle will be dedicated to Yvonne S. Boice. A renowned philanthropist and longtime Lynn supporter, Boice first brought the idea to Lynn in 2002. Now, after many years witnessing the circle expand as Lynn’s popularity among international students continues to grow, Boice has established an endowment for the Yvonne S. Boice Circle of Flags. “We continue to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the most international universities in the nation,” says Lynn President Kevin M. Ross. “Yvonne honored our global spirit when she proposed this big idea, and we are grateful for her commitment to ensure the circle of flags remains a permanent display.” Boice identifies herself as a world traveler and appreciates the personal and intellectual enrichment that comes with international travel. In 2004 she created the Lynn University Boice Scholarship to enable deserving students in the College of Business and Management to participate in study abroad experiences. “The flags are a glorious emblem of the

university’s global diversity while also being a unifying symbol for the sharing of cultural experiences,” says Boice. “Having traveled to 150 countries and visited all seven continents, I understand the importance of fostering cultural awareness in our youth, and I am honored that the Yvonne S. Boice Circle of Flags will continue to represent that mission for years to come.”

Two Wheels is Just as Important By CRA News Service

Three people were killed in traffic related crashes in the city this past week and all of them were either riding a motorcycle or a bicycle. The fatalities are indicative of Florida statistics, which shows that Florida has, one of if not, the highest bicycle death rate in the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report about bicycle deaths in Florida four years ago, that found there were 0.57 deaths per 100,000 people between 2008 and 2012, the latest statistics available. In comparison, Delaware, the state with the second highest total, recorded a rate of only 0.38. To add even more concern, Florida’s cyclist death rate decreased by less than 10 percent from the last period the statistic was measured, which was more than three decades ago and less than other states. The first crash occurred Friday, Feb. 12, in front of Patch Reef Park in the 2000 block of West Yamato Road. Alan Curtis, 84, was riding his bicycle along West Yamato Road when Tanya Rolleri, 37, of Boca Raton, who was driving a 2016 Audi, struck the bicycle as he attempted to cross the road, police said. Curtis, of Boca Raton, died at Delray Medi-

cal Center. The following morning, at 9:30 a.m., the second fatality occurred in front of Red Reef Park in the 1200 block of North Ocean Boulevard. Vladimir Kamenarovic, of Pompano Beach, was southbound on his 2007 Triumph motorcycle when the 2007 Honda Pilot, driven by Colleen Peery, driving in front of him tried to make a left turn into the park, police said. Kamenarovic, 43, crashed into the front driver door of the Honda, and was thrown from the motorcycle, police said. He died shortly after at Delray Medical Center. Peery, 59, was not hurt. Later that night the third person was killed at the intersection of on West Yamato Road and Northwest Second Avenue. David Sansom, of Boca Raton, was driving his scooter northbound in the southbound traffic lanes of Northwest Second Avenue shortly after 8:30 p.m. when he collided with a 2011 BMW 328in driven by Edgar Sanchez Hernandez. Hernandez, 76, of Boca Raton, was westbound. Sansom, 67, died at the scene, police said. As of press time, no charges were filed in any of the crashes. www.bocaratontribune.com

sports Strikers Sign Haiti National Team Star Jean Alexandre

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers 2016 roster nears completion as one of the final pieces to the puzzle, Haiti national team midfielder Jean Alexandre, signed with the club today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Alexandre, 29, brings a vast amount of domestic and international experience to Fort Lauderdale. For Haiti, the defensive midfielder has accumulated more than two dozen caps and participated in three CONCACAF Gold Cups. The Haitian-born midfielder also has strong roots in South Florida, having attended Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach and Lynn University in Boca Raton. “The addition of Alexandre gives us a number of options in midfield,” said Head Coach and General Manager Caio Zanardi. “He is a strong player; comfortable shielding the defense or playing higher up the field, with great experience in the U.S. and at the international level. We expect him to make a big contribution to our team are

excited to have another player with local ties and international pedigree on our roster.” In 2008, Alexandre represented his country of birth for the first time in a friendly match against Honduras. A mainstay of the national team, Alexandre was captain of Haiti at the 2013 Gold Cup. Major League Soccer (MLS) side Real Salt Lake selected Alexandre in the first round of the 2009 MLS Superdraft. Alexandre was a member of the Salt Lake side that captured MLS Cup in 2009 and reached the finals of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2011. Real Salt Lake recognized Alexandre as the club’s Humanitarian of the Year in 2010 for his charitable work of the field in Haiti. Alexandre was traded to San Jose Earthquakes in 2012 and also spent time with Orlando City, playing a major part of the club’s 2013 USL Championship-winning campaign. He joined Malaysia Premier League side Negeri Sembilan FA in 2014.

Boca Raton High School Wins Third State Championship In School History Boca Raton High School defeated Winter Park in the Class 5A state championship at Melbourne High by the final score of 2-0. The championship was the Bobcats’ third state championship in school history, the second under head coach Marcelo Castillo. Boca Raton High senior defender Joshua Adejunmobi played extremely well, markin Winter Park’s top scorer, Culter Coleman, the entire game, the rest of the Boca Raton defense did a solid job of not letting the Wildcats get behind them. Adejunmobi was all over the field on last weekend, It was Adejunmobi who set up Joseph Pal for the first Boca Raton goal in the sixth minute. The second goal came in the 47th minute on a free kick that saw Adejunmobi go up high to beat his defender and head one into the goal. However, the Bobcats would not have made

it to the championship game if it wasn’t for the heroics of goalkeeper Alan Trani who came up in the clutch for the Bobcats in the semifinals versus Jacksonville-Mandarin. Down 2-0, the Bobcats clawed their way back to take down Jacksonville-Mandarin in penalty kicks, which Trani scored the dagger to advance the Bobcats. Trani, who came to Boca Raton from Brazil late last year, has been the standout keeper for Castillo and the Bobcats all season long. “It’s amazing,” Trani said. “To be able to play for my first time for Boca High, my first year here in the United States. It’s just amazing that in just a short period of time to have all of this — being a state champion on my first try. Some have been trying for four years. They lost two years ago in the final. I’m happy we could bring the state title back home.”
