“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:4-7 NIV

Happy Birthday Rotarians, Thanks for Making a Difference Of the more than 300 columns I have penned to date, this is by far one that I am most proud of. The subject is near and dear to me as it is something in which I strongly believe and strive to use the principles as a guide to how I live my life. Rotarians here in Boca Raton and Delray Beach as well as in more than 200 countries are celebrating a milestone this week. They’re observing the 111th birthday of Rotary International - the world’s first organization based solely on service. For full disclosure, I was a member of the Rotary Club of Delray Beach-Sunrise from its inception in 1987 until it went defunct in 2014. I still visit several clubs but I am not an active member only because there is not a club that fits into my hectic schedule. It was on Feb. 23, 1905 that a lawyer, named Paul Harris, met with three friends for lunch in Evanston, Illinois, and decided they should come up with a way to give back to the community that had allowed them to become successful. They met weekly at each other’s office so
they decided to call it the Rotary Club. That tradition continues today with Rotarians breaking bread weekly at what Harris called “a family table” in an upbeat spirit of goodwill. They often invite speakers who inform them of needs in the community. Chances are you know a Rotarian. They are your neighbors and community leaders of all professions – CEOs, sales managers, elected officials, police officers, school teachers – all united for the common good to better your community. Locally, Rotarians are credited with sponsoring the annual OPAL Awards, providing meals to the homebound and awarding scholarships. They also buy and distribute dictionaries to third graders in our elementary schools. In other communities, Rotarians build parks, provide prosthesis for people who have lost a limb, deliver potable water for villages without and even provide animals or seeds for farmers. The six Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton and one in Delray Beach are a part of Rotary International, which has 1.2 million members in more than 33,000 clubs nationwide.
In keeping with its motto, “Service Above Self,” the organization focuses on six areas: Promoting peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, basic education and literacy and growing local economies. Rotary can claim the most success on the “fighting disease” front. Thanks to its Polio Plus program, launched in 1988, polio is close to being the second human disease in history after smallpox to be eradicated; it is already 99 percent gone. In recent years with help of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, there were only 37 cases left in the world: 29 in Pakistan and eight in Afghanistan. The local clubs do their part by contributing money each year. In fact, the Rotary Club of Delray Beach, which was chartered 68 years ago, has donated more than $65,000 to the campaign. That club, which began with 27 members at the Colony Hotel under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Boynton Beach, observed its birthday earlier this month on Feb.10.
My former club was started as the Rotary Club of Delray Beach West to serve the western areas of the city. It later changed its name to the Sunset club after we began meeting in the evening and finally to the Sunrise when we returned to being a morning club. I recall us building homes with Habitat for Humanity, replacing the roof and closing in a pool at the Association for Retarded Citizens’ home in Delray Beach, installing smoke detectors in a few homes and conducting numerous toys, clothing and food drives around the city. We sold ice cream and water at the annual Delray Affair for many years sponsored the annual July 4th Sand sculpting contest on the beach. One hundred percent of the proceeds funded the dozens of four-year scholarships we awarded Atlantic High School graduates. It is evident that Rotarians have strengthened our communities, built lasting relationships, solved problems and benefited countless residents. Thank you for your efforts in bettering this place we call home. Happy Birthday fellow Rotarians!
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
What You Need for Whatever You Attempt! When you succeed at much, or at everything that you attempt, when you complete a great deal that’s on your wish list, the more likely explanation is probably found in a simple word, provided by the dictionary. And that word is known as personal “initiative.” This applies to the things you plan for yourself, and even more for what can impact many! Always remember that you alone must go after the things you need and/or desire; only you can measure them. It’s you, and nobody else, that can determine with precision what you are after. The responsibility
is solely yours to do everything necessary to secure what you know to be within your reach. Thus, don’t pass the buck, neither blame anybody else when such things don’t get done! Once your objectives are clearly established, you need the initiative to proceed with all that’s necessary to arrive at the projected destination that will grant you what you desire, in the manner you want it, and with the characteristics you expect to find. Don’t just pronounce the word “initiative” but fulfill the demands that this term dictates! Although initiatives will originate in your
heart and mind, remember also that no one can do it all completely alone. But cooperatively, great projects can get off the ground, advance, and make an indelible difference for the good of countless others! Moreover, initiative is something that should not be limited to one time only, or one project alone; it can and often should be perpetuated ceaselessly, especially when others shall unquestionably benefit from your efforts! In whatever you attempt, always remember that human need is ever present everywhere, and it increases much faster than it
can be contained. Furthermore, what originates in a human heart, can also advance into neighborhoods, families, districts, cities, states, nations, and so on throughout the entire world. Whatever begins simply, and small, has the potential of developing into something of enormous import, to advance a cause, to pioneer a new community project, to impact a large number of people and communities which can benefit from what is being accomplished.
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

By Alyssa Lamp
Last month, Club Bow Wow Resort of Boca Raton opened the doors to their new location on NE 20th street. The Boca Raton Chamber Of Commerce attended to help with the ribbon cutting ceremony and along with the Chamber Of Commerce, was Club Bow Wow’s very own customers and fury friends. Club Bow Wow was created as a place for special pets like yours to relax, recline, and romp foolishly to their hearts’ content. There are unique areas to satisfy all moods and temperaments. Founded over 13-years-ago by local residents Cheryl Gorman and brother, Sean Gorman, Club Bow Wow Resort is a family owned pet resort in the community that provides daycare, grooming and overnight boarding in a cage-free environment and natural setting for pets around-the-clock. Prior to opening Club Bow Wow Resort, Cheryl Gorman was a systems engineer for 16 years before making a career change to the pet industry after conducting research specifically on pet care. Wanting to establish a location and environment where she would feel comfortable leaving her own two dogs, Gorman developed Club Bow Wow Resort to have a special concept so that all of their clients would want to leave their pets in a cage-free grooming and boarding environment unlike many other establishments. In addition to this, Cheryl Gorman also became a certified pet groomer, so she grooms all the furry friends herself, and completed doggy daycare training before teaming up with her brother Sean to offer
personalized services and care for each pet that visits them, whether they are there for the day, the weekend, or a week. Cheryl says, “After 16 years as a Systems Engineer, I was ready for a change. As I researched the pet care industry, the concept of creating a place where I could leave my two dogs, Beau Bear and Smooch Bear, was developed. Club Bow Wow had to be special, had to be cage-free, and had to cater to spoiled-perfect dogs. No request could be too outrageous.” Trained caregivers play with the dogs and provide TLC and hugs. Disciplined playtime is reinforced with time-outs, if necessary. Safety first is their motto. A loyal customer, Natalie Mikolich tells me, “Club Bow Wow Resort’s owner, Cheryl, her brother Sean and her staff treat every pet that comes through their door like it was their own. There are very few people I trust my dog (Dunkin) with, but I can always count on them no matter what time of the day it is. Whether it is for boarding or grooming, they are always there to help and truly care about each person’s pet.” In addition to providing a stress-free and open atmosphere that caters to the individual needs of each pet, Club Bow Wow Resort is also actively involved in holding fundraising events that benefit various nonprofit organizations for animals along with giving back to local schools. No matter how much fun your dog has had at Club Bow Wow, he/she will greet you enthusiastically at the end of the day. Rest assured, your pet will be ready for dinner and a good snooze after his/her exciting visit.

Remembering the Lost, 20 Years Later
By Stephanie Fonseca
20 years ago, Feb. 23 was a dark day for six families and their friends as they got news of a fatal crash that happened on Palmetto Park Road. Going home from a night spent at the bowling alley, nine teens squeezed into a Honda Civic and speed their way down Palmetto at 90 mph. Little did they know that the joy ride was going to come to a horrific stop. The 19-year-old teen, Nicholas Copertino who was driving the Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle and crashed into oncoming traffic sending the seven teens in the back seat flying out the rear window. The accident left five teens dead and left one teen, Maribel Farinas, 14, paralyzed. However, the driver, Copertino, the front passenger, David Grossman, 17, and Emily Slosberg, 14, survived the accident without suffering any long term injuries. Fast forward 20 years and the families held a memorial service for the loved ones they lost. They laughed, they cried, and they talked about what they’re doing so that other families don’t get struck with the
same tragedy. At the memorial ceremony, parents still wrestle the question of how to live on after the tragedy. Mother of Ryan Rashidian, 15, Kathy Hezlep, til this day asks “someone... a suggestion. How do I live on.” Since the accident in 1996, Irv Slosberg, the father of twins who were involved in the accident, ran for state representative so that he could implement better laws that could prevent accidents like these from happening to other families. Irv Slosberg is still serving in the state House, and is to thank for the bill that was passed, which allows law enforcement to stop drivers who are not wearing their seat belts. “We finally got the seat belt bill done,” said Slosberg at the memorial. Slosberg continued, “and we reduce fatalities every year by 500 people, in the state of Florida.” The accident stripped his twins, Dori, 14, and Emily Slosberg, now 34, apart. And in remembrance of her they created the Dori Slosberg Foundation, to promote traffic safety to teens. “Buckle up. Leave your phone alone. Spread the word,” Shayna Satzman, who lost her five best friends in the accident, pleads. The memorial ceremony was held, Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Kabbalah Centre, on Palmetto Park Road, across from the crash site, where four crosses and a star of David memorial stand. For more information about the Dori Slosberg Foundation and traffic safety, visit their website: http://dorisaveslives.org

Gov. Scott: Boca Raton Data Company to Add 200 Jobs By CRA News Service
The city is expected to get an economic boost in the coming years as IDI, a local data and analytics company, plans to add as many as 200 over the next few years, Gov. Rick Scott’s office said Monday. The governor made the announcement during a visit to the firm at xxx. “I am excited to visit IDI today to celebrate their recent success and the creation of 40 jobs over the past two years,” Scott said in a news release. “IDI is one of many small businesses growing in Florida and plans to add 200 new jobs over the next few years. We will keep working to cut $1 billion in taxes and create the new $250 million dedicated Florida Enterprise Fund this session so Florida can become first for jobs.” IDI CEO Derek Dubner said, “Since our inception, IDI has experienced incredible growth. We are grateful to Governor Scott for his commitment to creating a businessfriendly environment in Florida so companies like ours can succeed. IDI is dedicated to making the world a safer place, reducing the cost of doing business, and enhancing the consumer experience, and we look forward to working with new clients across the country to meet this goal.” Mayor Susan Haynie heralded IDI’s growth and success. “In a relatively short period of time they’ve created 40 jobs locally, and plan to create over 200 more for our city,” she said in the release. “We have a thriving business community here in Boca Raton and it’s always an honor to highlight their accomplishments.”
The company started in October 2014, now has140 employees nationwide, including the 40 in Boca Raton. It also has offices in New York, Seattle, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., according to a news release from the governor’s office. IDT provides due diligence, risk assessment, fraud prevention and other services for collection agencies and law firms. Through leading-edge, proprietary technology and a massive data repository, IDI’s data and analytical solutions harness the power of data fusion, uncovering the relevance of disparate data points and converting them into comprehensive and insightful views of people, businesses, assets and their interrelationships. In December, IDI acquired New Yorkbased Fluent, Inc., an industry leader in people-based digital marketing, and also announced the beginnings of the beta release of its next generation data analytics platform, idiCORE™, with wider distribution to the risk management industry expected within this quarter. “Since our inception, IDI has experienced incredible growth,” IDI CEO Derek Dubner said. “We are grateful to Gov. Scott for his commitment to creating a businessfriendly environment in Florida so companies like ours can succeed. IDI is dedicated to making the world a safer place, reducing the cost of doing business, and enhancing the consumer experience, and we look forward to working with new clients across the country to meet this goal.” 40 jobs for local families.
Yvonne Boice Announces Endowment of $150,000 For Scholarships To Benefit Women In STEAM Disciplines Yvonne Boice announced at the 4th annual Palm Beach State College STEAM luncheon that the Boice Family Foundation will be donating an endowment of $150,000 for scholarships to PBSC for women to study STEAM disciplines. Boice, who has chaired this fundraising initiative for the past four years, is an internationally recognized advocate for women’s issues. “Lack of funding should never stop a woman from receiving the kind of education that can change lives for generations,” she said. “These scholarships will ensure that women who would have given up on college or had to struggle between work and part-time studies, will now be able to eliminate the worry of funding their classes and simply concentrate on excelling in them.” Boice’s announcement, which took place at the Kravis Center, drew thunderous apwww.bocaratontribune.com
plause from the audience of over 500, who came to support the college’s fundraiser and to hear race car driver Danica Patrick speak about her success in a male dominated sport. “I was thrilled to make this announcement during a year when we had our first female speaker at our STEAM event,” said Boice. “And I was even more delighted that PBSC now has its first female President, Ava Parker.” Boice, is highly regarded as an advocate of both the arts and women’s issues. At her urging, for this five year fundraising initiative, PBSC added the Arts to the traditional STEM disciplines, providing more opportunities for students to benefit from the scholarship and mentorship opportunities. Boice has also travelled the globe as a delegate for women’s issues as part of several State Department initiatives.

Angry Michael Moore and Gentle Jewish Comedy
Charlotte Beasley
Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley
Wedding at St. Andrews Chapel This evening Bob and I were the guests at one of the most elegant fun weddings I have ever attended. The service was held on the grounds of the St. Andrews Chapel in Boca Raton followed by an outdoor elegant dinner party. Dinner and cocktail reception was delicious and many young people, friends of the bride and groom from Tufts University danced the night away.

For this week’s art house films we have Michael Moore’s latest angry tirade “Where to Invade Next” and the Jewish comedy “Dough.” In “Where to Invade Next,” Moore explores how life is much easier in European and one African country in which basic needs such as medical care, higher education, healthy food and paid vacations are provided by the state rather than private, for-profit providers as in the USA. I can just hear naysayers ranting that Moore is subversive, un-American, socialist or even Communist. The “invasion” is undertaken by Moore himself as he visits various countries and plants an American flag, declaring they are “conquered.” Obviously the whole scenario in tongue-in-cheek, but Moore does raise the valid point that Americans are work and profit-obsessed to the detriment of enjoying the finer things in life. It is no mistake that the first country Moore visits is Italy, where “La Dolce Vita” is a way of life. Moore hitched a ride ironically and intentionally on the U.S. Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan. Moore visits a young couple, Gianni and Christina Fancelli, who describe their work and lifestyle. The couple receives eight weeks paid vacation per year. The entire country of Italy pretty much shuts down in the month of August, while everyone goes on holiday. Lunch is a leisurely two hours, usually spent at home. Women receive fine months’ paid maternity leave. How does anything get done? You might wonder. Moore visits Lardini Men’s Fashions, where some of the finest suits in the world are produced. He visits Ducati, the world-class motorcycle company revered by enthusiasts the world over. Next stop is France, where Moore visits school children in their cafeteria, enjoying gourmet-quality healthy lunches. Moore smuggles in a Coca-Cola and none of the kids even wants to taste it. Finland enjoys the highest standard of education in the world, and it is all free. U.S. is number 29.
Even in Slovenia the standard of living is higher than the U.S.A. In Norway they gave up on their war on drugs and crime went down. Call Michael Moore a crank, but his points are well-taken. America spends 60 percent on the military, with dubious results. America has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, and one of the highest rates of recidivism (near 80 percent of prisoners are re-arrested). It is possible to love the U.S.A. and at the same time admit we are a bit uptight and no fun. It helps to travel and see how others live. If you can’t, this is an educational, satirical travelogue. A Feel-Good “Dough” “Dough” is a niche film under the subhead Jewish comedy. Jonathan Pryce plays Nat Dayan, the aging proprietor of a London Kosher bakery than has been in his family more than 100 years. Nat’s son Stephen has become a lawyer and wants no part of the bakery business. Nat’s customers are either dying of old age or leaving. His apprentice (Andrew Ellis) has been lured away by an entrepreneur (Ian Hart) who is starting a rival super market. After a fruitless search, Nat decides to give young African Muslim Ayyash (Jerome Holder) a chance despite their difference in religion. Ayyash needs a “cover job” because his real occupation is dealing pot for a local mob boss. One day when cops unexpectedly arrive, Ayyash ditches a bag of weed into the dough. The resulting Challah is a huge success, though no one knows why the bread makes them feel so good. A humorous subplot is the tentative romance between Nat and the recentlywidowed landlady Joanna (Pauline Collins), who is threating to sell the building from under Nat. “Dough” is a gentle, kind comedy that shows with understanding, people of differing views can work together. Fatal Accident Claims Life Of 16-Year Old Boca Raton Girl By Casey Westfall
A junior at Olympic Heights High School was tragically killed in a single car accident on the 8000 block of Glades Road early Saturday morning, February 20. Gabriella Sette Heiderick, 16, was traveling westbound on Glades Road approaching the Turnpike access road, on her way home from a friend’s house. At 3:24 a.m., she came through a mild bend and lost control of her 2006 Kia Rio. Heiderick’s car then rotated off the road, and collided into a tree with the driver’s side door. Heiderick was declared dead at the scene. PBSO reported that Heiderick was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, and she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, speed was reported to be a factor in the collision. Members of Heiderick’s family said that she had been sending text messages on her cell phone and using the messaging app
Snapchat while driving, and are now urging young drivers to refrain from cellphone use while behind the wheel. Heiderick was involved with the Choral Department of Olympic Heights High School, who have announced that a scholarship account in her name had been established in her honor. The family, not having the resources for a funeral on a short notice, created a page on GoFundMe in an attempt to obtain the necessary funds. The page was created on Saturday, February 20, with a goal of $22,000, and by the next day, their goal had been met. On Sunday, February 21, a memorial service for Heiderick was held at First Brazilian Baptist Church in Pompano Beach, and a candlelight vigil in her honor was held the same day shortly after the memorial service. The vigil was held on Glades Road, near the area where Heiderick’s accident occurred.
Boca Raton Women Carjacked At Gunpoint
By Casey Westfall
Boca Raton Police are investigating an armed carjacking that occurred in the parking lot of the Boca Tecca apartments on 5601 NW 2nd Avenue at 11:50 p.m. on Friday, Fed. 19. The victims, Melinda Reinders, 23, and Catherine Agro, 24, were waiting in Reinder’s red Infiniti FX35 for an Uber ride to Delray Beach. But before their ride
arrived, two unidentified male opened the door, drew guns to both Agro and Reinder’s heads, and ordered them to get out of the vehicle and onto the ground. As soon as both women exited the Infiniti two additional men entered the vehicle, and drove off, last being seen driving southbound on NW 2nd Avenue. Multiple items were lost in the carjacking, including an iPhone, a Michael Kors bag, and wallet with multiple credit cards. Reinders and Agro described all four suspects as black males, with the two who held them at gunpoint wearing black clothing and black covers on their faces. The investigation is still ongoing, and Boca Raton Police advise anyone who has information that could aid them to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-458-TIPS, or Detective Tim Kurdys at 561-338-1377.

columnists FAITH By Jim Mathis
Confusing Joy With Happiness My topic for today – joy – is not something we often talk about in the business and professional world. We commonly speak about happiness and being happy, whether it concerns finalizing a contract, attracting a new client, making a sale, receiving a promotion or a pay raise, or finding a new job we feel certain will be more fulfilling and rewarding. Such events make us happy. But when was the last time you heard someone speak about experiencing joy? Recently some friends and I were talking about these two seemingly similar words, joy and happiness. However, during the course of our discussion we realized that in important ways, they are very different. Happiness, for example, has a lot to do with what is happening at the moment. I can feel happy because it is not raining, or I might become unhappy simply because my coffee got cold. Joy, on the other hand, is more about attitude. Joy is a way of life, how we approach everyday events, both good and bad, while happiness typically is situational. Joy also can be more of a personality trait, an inner quality of well-being that permeates every part of person’s life. An observation that came from our discussion was how our level of joy can have an effect on what brings us happiness. For example, if we are joyful, we tend to see the good in many things: little pleasures will make us happy, and problems can be viewed as challenges rather than as insurmountable obstacles. People without joy in their lives will have a lot of trouble finding happy moments, and every problem they encounter will be perceived as a major hassle. I consider myself joyful, which means even seemingly inconsequential things can make me happy. I am fortunate that every busi-

ness I have been involved in was designed to make people happy. Whether as an entertainer, photo finisher, coffee house owner, or most recently, a restorer of old photos, I have seen most people I have worked with leave with big smiles on their faces. A good cup of coffee can bring a smile to a coffee lover’s face, but not nearly as much as seeing old family pictures brought back to life. Interestingly, the Bible says little about “happiness,” but it speaks extensively about “joy.” Here are a few things it tells us about how we should approach each day, whether we are at work, in our homes, or pursuing our favorite interests and hobbies: Joy should be a constant companion. If someone tells you they are always happy, be skeptical. Because everyone faces unpleasant situations in life. But inner joy is a quality that is not dependent on outward circumstances. So we are told to, “Be joyful always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Joy is not defined by circumstances. If someone told you, “Be happy, no matter what happens,” would you agree? And yet the Bible instructs us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4). Joy is dictated by our faith and trust in God. Another passage, also written by the apostle Paul, who was no stranger to adversity, declares joy a byproduct of growing faith in God. “And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God… we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope…” (Romans 5:2-5).

Turbulent Times for Delray Beach Arts Garage
By Casey Westfall
The first two months of 2016 have been anything be pleasant for the Delray Beach Arts Garage. The popular performing arts venue’s existence was threatened following their failure to accumulate the money needed to purchase the converted parking garage they currently operate out of. Back in 2013, the Creative City Collaboration, the group that runs the Arts Garage, made an offer to purchase the space for $2.5 million after the city voted to sell it, following a bid for the building made by a law firm. The Arts Garage was told to have the money by March 15, 2016, but during a city commission meeting in November 2014, things looked grim as the chairman of the Arts Garage’s board informed Mayor Cary Glickstein of the venue’s inability to come up with any money for the purchase. In a statement on an online petition set up by the Arts Garage, they described the deadline as a “challenge” that “proved to be unobtainable.” During a city commission meeting on Jan. 18, 2016, Delray Beach City Manager Don Cooper informed the commissioners that the Art Garage’s situation regarding the sale had seen little to no progress since the meeting in November 2014, and that they would most likely be unable to go through with it. Officials from the Arts Garage requested for a 10 year extension to their current lease, in lieu of purchasing the building. During a meeting on Feb. 16, the Delray Beach City Commission entertained their request—with a few amendments of their own. The Arts Garage’s lease was changed to a month-to-month plan that will last five years at the most. Following the decision, the Arts Garage gave this statement on their Facebook page: “We want to express our sincere appreciation to all of our patrons who called,
emailed, and spoke at City Hall on behalf of Arts Garage. We are grateful for your support! Your voices were heard! Our Board will be working with the City during the next few months to craft a new lease and expand upon our successful programming.” They also encouraged their supporters to email both the mayor and city commissioners to thank them for supporting the organization. But the lease was not the only issue plaguing the Arts Garage. On Jan. 28, the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency’s board delivered a devastating blow to the non-profit performing arts center when they unanimously voted to suspend a payment of $68,750, citing careless and unprofessional business practices as reason for the suspension. Furthermore, an independent audit performed on the Garage for fiscal year 20132014 found several deficiencies, including a bank overdraft exceeding $70,000, and a lack of documentation for purchases made by the Garage via credit card. However, in the Garage’s online petition, they stated that they had undergone a clean audit, but despite this, the Community Redevelopment Agency was “withholding $137,500 of programming funds despite [the] clean audit.” But on Feb. 19, the Community Redevelopment Agency held a special meeting where the Arts Garage’s financial records were reviewed, and they agreed to disburse the suspended $68,750 payment to the Arts Garage, despite still having reservations about their business practices. As their fifth anniversary approaches, the Arts Garage and their patrons can catch their breath knowing that the venue will be open for the celebration, and can hope that a permanent solution to prevent issues like the ones experienced during the first two months of 2016 will be unveiled soon.

Esteban Puerta Named C-USA Hitter of the Week
Florida Atlantic University junior first baseman has been named the first Conference USA Hitter of the Week of the 2016 season, as announced by the league office Monday. Puerta helped guide the Owls, who are receiving votes in multiple polls, to a 4-0 start, including two wins at No. 11 Mississippi State. FAU is the only team in Conference USA to boast a perfect 4-0 record as the Owls scored 29 runs over the weekend. Puerta hit .625 with eight RBI over the opening weekend, going 10-for-16 from the plate against South Dakota State and Mis-
sissippi State. He hit 7-of-8 with runners on base, 4-of-5 with runners in scoring position and earned five two-out RBI, batting a perfect 7-of-7 with two outs. Puerta tallied 15 bases on two doubles and a home run, walking twice, scoring a run and stealing a base. Puerta also crafted a stretch of five consecutive at-bats resulting in hits and RBI. The junior owns an on-base percentage of .667 while slugging .938. The Owls will host LIU Brooklyn for their home opener on Friday, Feb. 26 at 6:30. The Fighting Knights opened the final round of competition tied for seventh and nine shots back of leader Rollins. Lynn shot a tournament-low 297 to finish with a 54-hole score of 908, matching Rollins. It marked the first time in the 18-year history of the Lady Moc Classic there was a tie in the team standings for first place. Lynn won the tie-breaker based on the score of its fifth golfer in the final round. Host Florida Southern (911) claimed third place, followed by Barry (916), Seminole State (917), West Florida (917) and Flagler (917). The Lady Moc Classic featured four teams ranked in the top-10 and seven overall in the Golfstat top-25. While the team needed to mount a comeback, Ayala never faltered from her lead. Owning first place since the first round, Ayala would go on to shoot a career-best 54-hole score of 217 and the second-best total in tournament history. The record is 216 set by Lynn alum Samantha Smolen in 2014.
Ayala tied for the lead with 10 birdies and sank 34 par shots. She also tied for the par three scoring lead (-1), shot +5 on par four holes and was three-under on par fives. Besides Ayala’s career day, freshmen Kristina Ortiz (229) and Cristina Guitierrez (237) posted personal-best 54-hole scores while Ortiz also shot a career-best 74 on the final day to tie for 15th individually. Samantha Barber shot a 232 and newcomer Lucia Jimenez Martin posted a 238. Nadia Luttner was impressive on the links playing as an individual. She would tie for fifth individually with three round scores of 75-73-77 for a 225, one shot off her career-high. The Fighting Knights are back in action on Monday, Feb. 29, when they take part in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Springs, Fla. Strikers Partner With Fort Lauderdale Fc, Establish Youth Development Pyramid
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers took a massive step forward in its youth development efforts by forming a partnership with premier youth soccer program Fort Lauderdale FC, the club announced today. The partnership creates a developmental pyramid and a direct path for Fort Lauderdale FC’s youth players to progress to Fort Lauderdale Strikers U-23, and ultimately, the club’s professional team that competes in the North American Soccer League. Fort Lauderdale FC is the official competitive youth soccer program for the City of Fort Lauderdale. More than 600 kids between the ages of 5 and 18 are currently
enrolled in the program. “The club has made another tremendous step forward by laying the groundwork for youth development,” said Strikers CEO Sean Guerin. “South Florida is a hotbed of talent and as the area’s professional team, we feel it is our responsibility to use our resources to provide a path for kids to develop into professional players in their own backyards. Youth development is a fundamental piece of the long-term strategy of this club and this partnership is a commitment to our community and an investment in the future of soccer in South Florida.” As part of the partnership, Olaf Henke, Director for Fort Lauderdale FC, has been appointed the first head coach of Strikers U-23, the club’s player development side that will compete in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) beginning in the 2016 season. Henke has been with Fort Lauderdale FC since its inception in 2007 and played a vital role in its growth. Under his guidance, the club has become the leading competitive soccer program in East Broward. “We are excited about the opportunity to deepen our relationship with our professional hometown team, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers,” said Henke. “Both organizations are already sharing facilities in the city and are driven by the same goals to provide the
highest level of development for players. The partnership adds a vital part to our club with the opportunities for our players to move into a professional team and organization.” After an injury curtailed his playing career in 2001, Henke went on to become a coach and manager for local teams in his native Germany. He holds several licenses and diplomas from the US Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, including the Advanced National License and the Director of Coaching Diploma. “Being given the opportunity to lead the new NPSL team of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers is an honor,” added Henke. “I’m excited to work with some of the best talent South Florida has to offer and create opportunities for these players to take the next step in their development and possibly into a professional career.” Henke serves as a staff coach for the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program for the Florida Youth Soccer Association. He also has experience at the college level as the assistant coach for the Broward College Women’s team since the beginning of 2015, and at the high school level as the head coach of the Pine Crest Fort Lauderdale Boys team since 2013. The Strikers U-23 roster will be comprised
entirely of college and amateur players, thus allowing them to maintain NCAA eligibility. It is anticipated that a select number of U-23 players will be given opportunities to train regularly with the first team under Strikers head coach and general manager Caio Zanardi. “Our NPSL side will provide a platform for talented, local players to develop with the same methodology of our first team,” said Zanardi. “We look forward to working with Olaf and providing support to the U-23 team. We are confident in our abilities to find and train high quality players with the potential to become professionals at the club.” The Strikers will provide resources to Fort Lauderdale FC including involvement from the club’s professional coaches and players. Lockhart Stadium, the current home of the Strikers, will also host a number of training sessions and games for the program. The youth club will retain their name and colors. Fort Lauderdale FC and the Strikers share a key partner in Holy Cross Hospital. The Strikers and Holy Cross announced a multiyear partnership this past January. As a commitment to the growth of soccer in South Florida, the Strikers will continue to work with the region’s other youth soccer programs, including player appearances and coaching clinics.
