Community Invention Earns Eagles Landing Middle School Teacher $10,000
By CRA News Service
Residents in developing countries who administer their nebulizer treatment, often without electricity, could soon find the process easier, thanks to the invention of an Eagles Landing Middle School science teacher.
And the invention of the Nebutyre made Jerry O’Donnell $10,000 richer after his big idea won a maker space competition recently. O’Donnell was one of 10 recipients of a $10,000 “InfyMakers” award from the Infosys Foundation USA., a global leader in consulting, technology, outsourcing and
Pita Principle Sub and Grill Are More than Just Fast Food!
By Alyssa Lamp
Pita Principle Sub and Grill has been offering locals the most exquisite taste for the past 20 years. The cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and heavenly dishes make the customers feel at home. You walk in and feel welcome, and the staff there is amazing. Their chef, which was the previous owner, has been with Pita Principle since they opened, so he knows everything about the menu and about their little corner. Tony Gio just bought Pita Principle about four months ago from the original owner. By the age of 16, Gio was in the restaurant buisness, that’s what brought him here. He has a passion for food and wants to share that with Boca Raton. “My background is a chef, I’ve been in the kitchen since I was a teenager. It’s what I know.” Soon, Pita Principle will have their website, Instagram, and Twitter up for all the customers to use. You’ll be able to see the menu, posts about the food, and get to
know the place a little better. Gio says, “PitasPrinciple.com is now up. It’ll make it easier for people to see the menu, and see reviews. Pita Principle has been around for twenty years, so that tells you something.” Pita Principle is run on to-go orders and delivery. You walk in, order, then have the option to sit outside at one of their tables or take your food with you. If you do not want to leave the house, they can deliver it to you. It’s a quick stop. You have many different options to choose from on the menu. Chicken pitas, cold subs, vegetarian pitas, salads, gyros, wings and hot subs are just a few options and all of the options are reasonably priced. The food is also made right in front of you so you know what you’re getting. Gio tells me, the most popular dishes there are the Chicken pita gyro and the Italian sub, which are made from the popular Boar’s head. I even ordered the Chicken pita myself and it was out of this world. The customers are always happy too. People are raving about Pita Principle, one customer Colton Ralston says, “ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PITAS AROUND! A True Gem & Landmark Of East Boca! You Can’t Go Wrong Here!” If you are looking for that quick fix or you are just in love with pitas and subs, Pita Principle is the place to go. You will not be disappointed with the experience and you will come back for more.
next-generation services. The entries were judged on their solutions to real world problems, the applicants’ innovative uses of technology, their originality of ideas and the quality of their presentations. “The idea is to enable people to come up with ideas that are relevant to real world problems, usage of technology innovatively and originality of these ideas,” Pravin Rao, chief operating officer, Infosys Foundation USA, said in a news release. O’Donnell gave birth to the idea in the summer of 2014while attending the Science and Engineering Program for Teachers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A presenter told the group in a session at MIT about the need for technology in developing countries that don’t have consistent access to electricity, according to a news release from the School District of Palm Beach County. The presenter told of a father who saved his son’s life by using a bicycle pump as a pressure source to run a standard nebulizer for his son’s treatment, O’Donnell said. “The ‘Nebutyre’ is a take-off of this idea
and goes one step further, making the treatment as effective as any received by any nebulizer that uses electricity to run a pump,” O’Donnell said in the release. The “Nebutyre” uses the high pressure and volume of air in a standard car or truck tire to deliver nebulizer treatments to patients. It reduces the air pressure to what’s needed to effectively treat a patient for between five and nine minutes – all without requiring electricity. Upon returning home, O’Donnell bought supplies and began working on a prototype. He enlisted his Eagles Landing students in building and testing the prototype. They helped name it. “I pulled my class in on it,” O’Donnell said. “I didn’t want to do it alone.” The money O’Donnell received from the InfyMakers award will go toward clinical trials and other work on the “Nebutyre.” It will also go toward a pizza party for his students. To learn more about the InfyMakers award and to watch a video about the “Nebutyre,” visit www.infymakers.com.

Police Hope to Save Lives with Antidote to Overdose We are only 60 days into the year and already fire-rescue emergency medical technicians in Delray Beach have given 10 overdose victims a second chance to live. The first responders have been carrying a drug called naloxone — known commonly by its trade name, Narcan after they saw a very large uptick of heroin overdoses. The drug can reverse a heroin overdose instantly. Hailed as the recovering capital of America, Delray Beach is the epicenter in South Florida. Addiction to heroin and to prescription opioids has become so common in the city, which has more than 200 licensed recovery programs and more than 100 “sober homes.” Last year alone there were 26 heroin overdoses in Delray Beach and there was a time when rescue personnel were using the medicine so often, they ran out of supply. (In the first two weeks of 2014, police seized more heroin than in the past 10 years combined.) The number of overdose cases continues to
soar, so much that in an effort to save lives, police officers on Tuesday began hauling the life-saving antidote around along with all the accoutrements they currently tote. The drug comes in a liquid vial, but is delivered into the nose as a fine mist through an atomizer. Should someone who is unconscious, blue and not breathing from an overdose of heroin or opioid painkillers be given an injection or nasal spray of naloxone, it is almost guaranteed that he or she will be sitting up and talking in one to three minutes. Fire-Rescue personnel trained the supervisors who are the custodians of the drug for their shifts. Once administered to addicts who have overdosed, the medicine prevents the disastrous effects of opioids, most notably respiratory failure, and gives emergency responders, family members or friends, a 30- to 90-minute window to get the victim to the hospital for more advanced care. Before paramedics began administering naloxone, overdose victims often died of
those effects while others looked on helplessly. Police Chief Jeffrey Goldman said their mission is to provide public safety, and naloxone is another tool to help them do that. No officer wants to notify a family that a loved one may have died from a heroin overdose, and they have done that 10 times to date this year, he said. As opiate overdoses have soared nationwide, law enforcement agencies all over the country are beginning to train their officers on how to use naloxone and provide them with kits. Police are often the first to arrive at the scene, and experts say those early minutes can be the key to saving a life. The New York City Police Department is doing this on Staten Island, where the death rate from opioid overdose is roughly four times that of other boroughs. I applaud Chief Goldman and all those who responsible for this decision because instead of saying, ‘It is not really part of our job,’ they have taken another approach and are treating drug addiction as a disease.
Statistics show that deaths from overdose of heroin and prescription opioids more than tripled nationally between 2000 and 2010. Overdose is now the leading cause of injury-related death, surpassing auto crashes. It kills twice as many people in the United States each year as AIDS. I recall the time when we thought of heroin as an inner-city drug. That is no longer the case. Today, it is a middle-class drug. Just recently the operator of one of our local recovery centers told me that the number of OD cases because of heroin brought to his doorsteps has skyrocketed as many as 10 times. Let’s face it folks, just like the homeless population, the latest problem is here to stay. What are we going to do about it? Medical professionals have been using naloxone, like defibrillators, for years. So, like defibrillators, it may be a good idea to have the resuscitation sprays in public places throughout the city. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Always Be On The Lookout! If you attempt to go anywhere with your eyes closed, you’ll most certainly stumble somewhere and fall, besides other possible disasters your lack of caution can cause. The same is equally true in our daily living in the world. It’s important that we always be on the lookout! Live all your days with awareness of what is in front of you, what you’ve left behind, whatever surrounds you, and carve a safe path to lead you to where you need to be, so as to get there efficiently, doing much good while you’re en route as well as at your place of arrival. The idea of always being on the lookout does not denote spy tactics. It’s also not
to intrude or meddle into somebody else’s territory. The purpose should never be to force your way into somebody or something where you might not belong, or even be welcome! I once read a significant challenge about two houses. One was filled with mirrors around all its walls; the other contained a great number of windows all over. The question was: What kind of house would you prefer to inhabit – the one filled with mirrors, where you would only look at yourself all the time, or a house with many windows, out of which you could contemplate the world, your surroundings, and the needs you could detect from that vantage
point of viewing? When I recommend to myself and my readers always to be on the lookout, my intent is precisely to urge us all to be sensitive to much that surrounds us, particularly the needs that expect from us possible solutions we may be able to provide. The world requires more concerned people, more observant individuals, more persons in search of fresh opportunities to do good for the benefit of others. Everywhere countless fellow humans lack encouragement, both to proceed in the route where they find themselves, as well as to find new trajectories in life wherein challenges will be found through which needs may be met,
seeds may be sown, and rich harvests may also be gathered. Everybody is uniquely equipped with ideas and skills which, if transformed into positive action, can contribute significantly to improve other lives and, in the process, make this world a better place. Let us never minimize what we already have; let us simply find concrete ways of doing what we can, with what we already possess, for the benefit of others who need our personal deeds and contributions! Persons prepared to keep their eyes widely open, shall never miss new opportunities anywhere, to bless other lives in significant ways!

4KIDS hosted their signature social event of the season on Saturday, February 27, at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton. Woodfield welcomed upwards of 300 4KIDS advocates, community leaders, and guests who came together for the annual event. Over $180,000 was raised at the Sweet Dreams Gala to benefit kids in crisis. The evening began as the sun was setting with a reception hour on Woodfield’s beautiful veranda overlooking the championship golf course. Guests also enjoyed a meetand-greet with Sweet Dreams Gala honorary hosts Bernhard and Vikki Langer, who are also longtime supporters of 4KIDS. Between photo opportunities and hors d’oeuvres guests had the opportunity to meet new 4KIDS President, David Fee and his wife Terry. Guests were welcomed into an elegant dining room with distinguished décor and photos of the children who have been served by 4KIDS. “The moment people entered the room we wanted them to feel a sense of passion and vision for the children in our community,” shared 4KIDS Director of Public Relations, Katy Mills. The highlight of the evening was a powerful, dramatic presentation depicting true stories of children 4KIDS has served. 5 children all showcased dreams being unlocked, until one child had no way to
unlock her dreams and no one to help her realize her potential. This was the opportunity for guests to join 4KIDS in the vision of a home for every child, by unlocking the dream of a home and a family for one little girl. Guests also learned about 4KIDS outcomes and goalsfor the year from 4KIDS team members Edvardo Archer and Jessica Baxter. “In my work as a therapist and trainer I get a chance to ensure that we are investing and producing quality in each parent we license,” Archer shared. “When a foster parent is licensed with 4KIDS we want to empower them and give them tools to parent children from hard places,”Archer continued. 4KIDS board member and SBA Communications Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Brendan Cavanagh, shared about his personal experience fostering and supporting the mission of 4KIDS. Cavanagh said, “There are few investments you can make where the returns continue to pour in over generations, long outliving the original investor. 4KIDS is one of those investments.” The Sweet Dreams Gala served as the perfect platform to help 4KIDS kick off the year unlocking dreams for more children by providing loving, well-equipped families and homes to ensure no child is left waiting.

The suspect behind an attempted stabbing at Florida Atlantic University that occurred Jan. 31 was arrested on Thursday, March 4. FAU Police said that Durham Cole Jensen, 18, barged out of a dorm room in the second floor of the Indian River Tower dormitory brandishing a knife over his head, and made a cutting motion toward a student in the hallway. Fearing for their life, the victim engaged Jensen, and wrestled him to the ground. Jensen evaded campus police, but footage from surveillance cameras of the incident provided investigators with the necessary
information, which led to his arrest by the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office. During his first court appearance, which occurred the day following his arrest, Jensen’s attorney, Ian Goldstein, told Judge Joseph Marx that Jensen was visiting his girlfriend at her dorm the day of the incident, and that the alleged victim was harassing her; shouting expletives and loudly banging on the door. While addressing the court, Goldstein also claimed that Jensen did not have a knife on him at the time. Jensen’s bail has been set at $5,000, and is currently being held at PBSO’s Main Detention Center.
Two Arrested in Armed Robbery At Library Parking Lot By CRA News Service
A Lauderhill man and a teenager are behind bars, accused of robbing three women near the downtown library parking lot, police said on Friday. Keon Cunnington, 20, and a 17-year-old boy, both of Lauderhill, were charged with armed robbery. The pair is also accused of stealing two hover boards in an earlier robbery in Ocean Ridge. The robbery victims told police they were walking to their car on Northwest 2nd Avenue from a restaurant shortly after 8 p.m. on Feb. 27 when two young men riding hover boards approached them. As the women got in their car, one of the suspects, wearing a red hoodie, pointed a gun at one of the women and demanded her purse, police said. The woman did not comply. The suspect then tried to grab the wallet belonging to another woman who was in the rear seat but was unsuccessful,
police said. The second suspect, in a grey shirt, grabbed the black leather backpack of a woman who was in the front passenger seat, police said. Both suspects then ran, police said. Two of the women were treated for minor injuries. While they were investigating the crime, detectives learned of a robbery several hours earlier in Ocean Ridge where the suspects stole two hover boards and left in a Honda, registered to a Lauderhill address. Investigators also learned that the suspects allegedly used one of the women’s credit card at a Walmart in Delray Beach. They got video surveillance of the suspects using the card in the store, police said. Investigators went to the Lauderhill address where the car was registered and met with the owner and his 17-year-old son. They were able to link both suspects to the crime and charged them.

Entries Needed for Car, Bike Show Congregation B’Nai Israel’s 23rd By CRA News Service Annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day
Registrations are being accepted for the upcoming car and bike show at Village Academy in Delray Beach. The inaugural KOP Car and Bike Show will be on Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We are in need of cars and bikes to be part of our event,” said Keisha Harrington, coordinator of the show. “Cars can be old school, classics or even a regular car that’s ideal for showing. Motorcycles can be from Harleys to just a regular motorcycle.” The car and bike show is one component of the event, which is dubbed Delray Dental Day. The purpose of the event is multifold, organizers said. With February being National Children’s Dental Health Month, students from across the Palm Beach County competed for some cool prizes in an essay and poster contest, organizers said. The winners will be announced at the event. “We will use the event to bring awareness to the importance of good dental hygiene in our youth, we will recognize the winners of our essay and poster contest and finally,
it will serve as a fundraiser for student clubs on campus,” said Robert Dodd, one of the organizers. For example, members of the school’s Safety Patrol will use the event to raise money to fund their annual trip to Washington, D.C., he said. Several youth groups throughout the city will showcase their talent, organizers said. “It’s a chance for them to do whatever they excel in in front of their peers,” Dodd said. “It’s going to be more like a Youth on Parade.” There will be at least two drumlines doing demonstrations, organizers said. Trophies will be awarded to the best and outstanding cars and bikes. The public attending the event will vote for their best and most outstanding car/bike. Registration fee is $10 and $15 on the day of the show. There also will be food, music and 50-50 drawing available. “This promises to be a great family event,” Harrington said. “We are hoping to put together a fabulous show. We want to be known as the finest car show on any school ground in Southern Palm Beach County.”

Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) Boca Raton’s 23rd annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day, held on February 28, included an actionpacked schedule filled with opportunities for hundreds of Congregation members to perform good deeds. New this year was a “feed the hungry” barbeque at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, which was sponsored by B’nai Israel’s Kantor Family Center for Justice and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. “I am so excited about the turnout and the variety of social action events that CBI accomplished last Sunday” said Steve Allen, Executive Director of CBI. “Between the Embrace race where we won the award for largest delegation, Gleaning in Boynton Beach, and the BBQ where we fed hundreds of people at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, we truly made a difference in the community. We can’t wait until next year as the “congregation with a conscience” continues to make its mark in the community.” Barbecue sponsors included VIP Caterers, Subway, the Sidewalk Chef, Boca’s Best BBQ Smokehouse, Publix, and Singin’ With Susan. This was the 32nd year that CBI has partnered with Ebenezer Baptist Church. The two congregations join together annually

Future Stars Performing Arts Competition Held At Mizner Park Amphitheater By Casey Westfall
Young dance and vocal students performed in front of their families, mentors, friends, and admirers at Mizner Park Amphitheater during the Boca Raton Rotary Club’s 13th annual Future Stars Performing Arts Competition. Of the 78 contestants who auditioned for the show on December, 12, 2015, only 31 were selected by judges to perform at Sunday’s show. The show, directed this year by Bill Riddick and Bob Buruchian, featured performances from both middle and high school students, and was divided into five categories; middle school dance solo, high school dance solo, middle school vocal solo, high school vocal solo, and dance group. The following are the winners for each category: Dance Group 1. Dancetown Boca - “Salvation” 2. Sophia Grau and Dougal Herr - “Bam Bam” 3. Allie Cawthorne Dance Company - “To This Day” Middle School Dance 1. Jillian Carpenter 2. Arielle Rothenberg 3. Cecilie Brattli Middle School Vocal: 1. Heather Kirschner 1. Isabelle Eisenberg 2. Sivan Ben-David High School Dance 1. Meescha Cooper 2. Sydney Stephenson 3. Brittany Weger High School Vocal 1. Hannah Crampton-Thomas 2. Alexandra Marra 3. Cassandra Ortiz
Choice Award went to Jon Paul Nesheiwat this year, while the Spirit Award was given to Laura Granello. In addition to the awards given to the first through third place winners, each finalist who performed in the competition received medals, and all who performed in the show now have the opportunity to apply for one of the Rotary Club’s need-based performing arts scholarships. Judges for the show were made up of Rotary Club members, as well as professional members of the performing arts community, including Dan Guin, Boca Ballet’s executive director and co-artistic director. Included in the lineup was a performance by Maggie Baugh, a country guitarist and fiddler native to Boca Raton. Baugh was awarded both Favorite Female Local Artist and Favorite Song by a Local Artist by South Florida Country Music in 2015. The Rotary Club stated that the mission of Future Stars is “to provide South Florida’s most talented high school and middle school performers a professional quality production worthy of their amazing talent.” Future Stars began 13 years ago, when one of the Rotary Club’s members, Rick Taylor, whose daughter was an aspiring vocalist in high school, expressed his desire for young people gifted in the arts to have more opportunities to exhibit and perfect their talents, and led to the creation of the competition.

Nascar Driver Danica Patrick Headlines PBSC Steam Luncheon I attended the PBSC Steam Initiative luncheon at the Kravis Center this week. There were several hundred people in attendance to hear race car driver, Danica Patrick. Yvonne Boice Zucaro was the narrator and Ava Parker, the President gave welcoming speech’s. Danica was interviwed by Dan Cane co-founder and CEO of Modernizing Medicine. A fabulous Filet Mignon lunch was served to the huge crowd in attendance.

Circle of Flags Ceremony At Lynn University Friday morning, a very cold chilly one at that, I attended the circle of flags ceremony at Lynn University. Yvonne Boice Zucaro celebrated the flags being named in her honor. She created an endowment to provide for the maintenance of the Yvonne S. Boice Circle of Flags. Many dignitaries were present at this event including Lynn University President, Kevin Ross, Christine Lynn who donated the largest gift in the University’s history , Mary Perper, Donald Ross and Greg Malfitano, Pres. Emeritus of Lynn University and many many others. A luncheon of many different cultures and countries was served to the very large
Everyone loves an underdog. Michael “Eddie” Edwards was more than just an underdog; he was a source of national pride for a fading British empire. Eddie Edwards is played by Taron Egerton. Edgerton is a British actor who co-starred with Alicia Vikander in “Testament of Youth,” but this is by far is biggest role, and he nails it. Eddie Edwards was plagued from childhood with poor vision and weak knees. He was told he could never make it into the Olympics. What Edwards lacked in physical prowess he made up with intelligence and sheer determination. When Edwards learned the British had not fielded an Olympic ski-jumping team in 52 years, he decided to focus on that. Besides, it was easier to quality for that than the cut-throat
downhill skiing. Eddie’s skeptical father (Keith Allen) is no help. He thinks Eddie should concentrate on the family plastering business. Mom (Jo Hartley) on the other hand is supremely supportive of her dorky son, no matter how unlikely his quest seems. Taron Egerton must have put on weight to play chubby Eddie. His first yellowish ski outfit makes him look like Winnie-thePooh, and his thick glasses make him look even more nerdy. Director Dexter Fletcher and writer Simon Kelton have taken liberties with the facts. The largest liberty is the fictional character of washed-up, alcoholic ex-ski-jumper Bronson Peary, played with wry bravado by Broadway star Hugh Jackman. The salvation of booze-soaked Peary dovetails with the success of teetotaler, milk-drinking Eddie. Will Peary’s nemesis, former ski jump champion Warren Sharp (Christopher Walken at his haughtiest) finally forgive and respect Pathetic Peary? One guess. Yes, “Eddie The Eagle” is corny and predictable, but like the real Eddie Edwards it is a crowd-pleaser. Edwards may have come in dead last in both his events at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, but he emerged a national hero for a country that desperately needed one. Rating:

ADT is Acquired by Apollo and Merged with Protection 1 By Veronica Haggar
The ADT Corporation, a U.S. and Canada leading provider of security and automation solutions for homes and business, announced on a press release on Feb 16th, that it has been acquired by Apollo Global Management, a leading global alternative investment manager, and merged with Protection 1, a premier full-service business and home security company in the U.S. The acquisition price represents a premium 56% over ADT’s closing stock price. When combined with Protection 1, represents an aggregate transaction value of nearly $15 billion. The new combined business will operate under ADT and the headquarters of the combined firm will remain in Boca. Timothy J. Whall, president and CEO of Protection 1, will be the CEO of the combined business following the closing of the transaction. “This transaction represents a highly attractive premium for ADT’s shareholders,” said Naren Gursahaney, President and CEO of
ADT on a written statement. “We’re proud to have strengthened the quality of our customer base, improved service and retention, and extended our leadership in innovative solutions such as our ADT Pulse platform and our new Security-as-a-Service offering, ADT Canopy. By combining Protection 1 with ADT, we will be better positioned to expand the breadth and depth of the services we offer to our customers throughout the United States and Canada.” According to Marc Becker, Senior Partner at Apollo, the combined business will generate $318 million in recurring monthly revenue and an excess of $4.2 billion as a total annual revenue. “Protection 1’s robust commercial presence will speed ADT’s expansion into the commercial sector supported by increasing commercial sales and technical skills across a well matched national footprint,” said Timothy J. Whall, president and CEO of Protection 1. The acquisition is expected to be completed by June.
Florida Power & Light Company to Reduce Customer Rates on April By Veronica Haggar
On February 2nd, Florida Power & Light Company filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission to reduce customer rates on April thanks to anticipated savings from new power plant and lower natural gas prices. The new FPL Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center, fueled by U.S. produced natural gas, generates enough power for approximately 260,000 homes and businesses using 35% less fuel and half the carbon emission rate. The reduction of $1.65 off a 1,000-kWh residential customer’s monthly bill on April will be the 4th rate decrease in 16 months. Since 2014, the company has made a reduction of approximately $10. “As many utilities across the country look at
significant costs to comply with the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, our history of smart, long-term investments in clean, fuel-efficient technology have positioned us well, mitigating the need for our customers to pay more for compliance,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of Florida Power & Light Company. “By investing strategically over many years in clean, U.S.-produced natural gas, zero-emissions nuclear and solar energy, FPL has proven that it is possible for an electric utility to deliver service that is clean, reliable and low-cost.” According to the FPL press release from last week, the company plans to file a 4 year rate plan proposal next month to include 3 base rate adjustments during 2017 through 2020 to support investments in advanced infrastructure and clean generation.

columnists FAITH By Robert J. Tamasy
Is It True We Can´t Take It With Us? Occasionally we hear the cliché, “You can’t take it with you.” The implication is that on the day we pass from this life, we will not be taking suitcases filled with our belongings. No moving van will be following the hearse. Following the death of a wealthy, internationally famous entrepreneur, when asked how much the businessman had left behind, a company spokesman accurately responded, “All of it!” Strangely, however, often we do not act as if that is true. Many of us accrue as many material things as our incomes allow. For some people this means multiple homes, numerous cars, closets filled with attire that could clothe entire villages in Third World countries, expensive vacations, enough gizmos and gadgets to occupy several lifetimes. We fret over investment portfolios, agonizing when returns drop and rejoicing (temporarily) when they soar. Yet, upon taking our final breath, everything we have amassed remains behind, left perhaps to family members and loved ones, or even to the government in the form of inheritance taxes. So if in reality we can’t take it with us, why does our behavior make it appear we think otherwise? This is not to say material things – TVs, cell phones, computers, houses, various forms of transportation, shirts and skirts and slacks, books, boats, even bowling balls – are inherently wrong. But if they demand our full attention and devotion, it might be good to re-examine our priorities and passions. We find a decidedly different perspective on “stuff ” in the Bible, one worthy of our consideration: Material possessions make a poor master. We can use the things we possess as tools, or servants, enabling us to do the good things we have the opportunity to perform. Or they can become objects of worship,
consuming our time, talent and energy. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the others. You cannot serve both God and Money”(Matthew 6:24). Material possessions demand our affections. Having enough money in our bank accounts is not bad, unless we have trouble defining what “enough” means. Too many people, however, have been driven by their obsession with bank balances and bottom lines, at the expense of deserving people around them. This is one reason Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). What did He mean by “treasures in heav en”? Material possessions are never enough. How many people have you met who have sincerely stated, “I have everything I need. I never want another thing”? Probably not many people, if any at all. In answer to the question, “How much is enough?”, most of us if we were honest would reply, “Just a little bit more.” About this Israel’s King Solomon, reputed to be the wisest man who ever lived, wrote, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income…. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them…. Naked a man comes from his mother’s w omb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand” (Ecclesiastes 5:10-15).

Boca Raton Police Teaches “Cane Fu” Self Defense Classes
By Veronica Haggar
Officers from the Crime Prevention Unit of the Boca Raton Police Department have been conducting a series of free selfdefense classes for seniors (and individuals who use a cane on a daily basis), using their canes to learn how to defend themselves from an attacker. “All of our participants see improvements in balance, mobility, strength, and most of all their confidence,” said Officer Gwynne Friters, one of the officers teaching the selfdefense class. “They bring a cane with them and they learn several defense techniques they can use against a potential attacker if necessary.” The purpose of the “Cane Fu” classes is for the individuals to learn how to use their
voice to get help in a situation where they are under attacked, and the main goal is to not get hurt. The classes take place in the auditorium of the Police/Fire Training Facility at 6500 Congress Ave. “Most individuals have not being exposed to a high stress scenario before and are not quite sure what to do, so the first thing that we do in class is teach compliance,” said Officer Friters. “Do whatever an attacker is asking you or demanding you to do. Number two, learn how to use that loud voice to summon for help. Number three, use your cane if you need it if you’re being attacked.” Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the course. Next class is on Feb 29th and every Monday after that until April 4th (with the exception of March 21st).

Boca Raton FC To Host New York Cosmos in Boca Raton “Traveling to South Florida to train and match up with Boca Raton FC is a good opportunity as we prepare for the upcoming season.” The Cosmos are famously known from its original time in the NASL back in the late 1970s as the club brought in superstars such as Pelé, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, and Franz Beckenbauer, en route to five NASL Soccer Bowl Championships. “We are very excited to have a team like the New York Cosmos believe in what we are doing here in Boca Raton,” said Boca Raton FC president, Douglas Heizer. “This game is a huge opportunity for us in Boca Raton to continuing to show our growth as a club and allow our fans to experience soccer at the highest level.”
The Boca Christian Blazers Gives the Glades Day Gators A Run for their Money After trailing from behind the Boca Christian Blazers beat the Glades Day Gators in their District game. Having lost two of the past three prior District matches, Boca Christian was looking to get back in the district with the game against Glades day. As the teams came on to the pitch, both teams were nervous, being that this game could be decisive for the team’s fate. With Glades day up first to bat, foul balls and balls were the only things being called. And as foul balls became more common, people watching the game left to move their cars so their cars were out of harm’s way. At the end of the first inning it was 1-0 Glades day, but strikes ran rampant. Into the second inning with two players on bases, Glades day increases the score by two. Into the third inning, the nerves settled for the Boca Christian Blazers and they got back into the swing of things. Fourth inning comes around and the
Blazers get their boys on bases, and as the Glades Day Gators go up to bat the Blazers trail by one. Bottom of the fifth inning and its comeback season. Bases loaded for the Blazers and a single by Pratt, they Blazers get three runs and lead 5-3 at the bottom of the fifth. From there on, the Blazers held onto the game and win their second district game 5-3. “This game against Glades Day was a crucial point in the beginning of our season. Glades Day has been one of the tougher teams we have played so far this year,” said catcher Austin Smith for the Boca Christian Blazers. “This was a big confidence booster and it also showed that when we’re down, it’s not time to lay down and to roll over, but to pick up our chins and charge the mountain,” continued Smith. As of their game against Glades Day, the Blazers are on a six game win streak.
The Cosmos returned to the pitch in 2013 and in their first season back, the club’s winning ways continued as they were crowned the 2013 Soccer Bowl Champions. This past season the Cosmos, led by Spanish legends Marcos Senna, and Raúl, once again hoisted the Soccer Bowl. “Having a team like the New York Cosmos come visit us here in Boca Raton to play a friendly versus Boca Raton FC is a tremendous opportunity not only for our club but for the entire City of Boca Raton,” says Boca Raton FC head coach and General Manager Marcelo Castillo. “We are very excited to host the New York Cosmos.” Tickets for the game can be purchased at www.bocaratonfc.com/tickets.
Moura Delivers As Strikers Defeat Chengdu Qianbao
A strong defense performance and a goal by Geison Moura was enough for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers to tally their second consecutive preseason victory in China with a 1-0 result over Chengdu Qianbao. The Strikers came into the match on the back of a 6-0 triumph over Sichuan Longfa on Sunday. “Today we had a complicated game, but I am very happy what we did,” said head coach and general manager Caio Zanardi. “We have a few more days to practice here [in Chengdu] and correct our mistakes before our last friendly at the end of the week.” Zanardi stuck with ten members of the side that started the match on Sunday, and introduced wholesale changes after the halftime interval. Just as the club did on Sunday, the Strikers started, and finished, the match with attacking intent, while finding balance on defense to shut out Chinese opposition for the second straight match. Moura recorded the first real chance of the day in the 24th minute. Playing with his back to goal, target forward Maicon Santos redirected Neil Hlavaty’s ball into the path of Moura, who had surged into the box from the left. His shot was parried by the goalkeeper at the near post. On the ensuing corner, Moura got another opportunity, and this time he buried it. Hlavaty’s in-swinging corner was met by the
www.bocaratontribune.com
Brazilian winger at the far post and nodded into the back of the net. The goal was the first for Moura in Strikers’ colors. Hlavaty meanwhile tallied his third assist in two games. Though the score remained 1-0 for the duration of the contest, the Strikers didn’t stop creating goalscoring chances. Matheus Carvalho should have doubled the lead on the half hour mark. A counter-attacking move following a Chengdu Qianbao corner kick began when goalkeeper Bruno Cardoso punted a ball forward to PC. The midfielder was fouled from behind as he chased the long ball, but Carvalho, streaking in from the right, maintained control of the ball and beat the keeper in a 1-on-1 to roll the ball into the goal. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, advantage was not signaled by the referee, and the play was called back for the original foul. Fort Lauderdale’s defense was tested, although neither Bruno or Diego Restrepo had to make a save. In the second half, the Strikers kept the intensity while Zanardi experimented with formation and overall shape. Jean Alexandre fired wide on a volley and a clever exchange between Jose Angulo and Victor Pineda should have warranted a goal. The Strikers preseason tour of China concludes on Sunday with a friendly match against Beijing Qihang. March 4 - 17, 2016
