Stir Crazy Closes in Boca Raton Due To Lease Dispute with Town Center The repercussions of Stir Crazy Fresh Asian Grill abrupt closure on Monday night continues to make waves in Boca Raton as the beloved hangout spot for many residents in the city was forced to close amidst legal issues with Simon Properties. For the past 15 years, Boca Raton residents were able to enjoy Stir Crazy’s amazing array of items either before or after a long day of shopping. However, Stir Crazy closed its doors Monday night, citing “ongoing legal issues”. “Due to ongoing legal issues with the mall’s ownership, Simon Properties, we are announcing that we have made the difficult business decision – after more than 15 years – to immediately

Community Residents and City Officials Come Together To Solve Palmetto and 5th Ave Issue As the City of Boca Raton is growing and developing, a major controversy among residents is the effect that this growth will have on their daily lives. On Wednesday night, at The Downtown Library, over 50 residents came to a meeting with traffic engineers to discuss possible solutions to the worsening issue on Palmetto Park Road and 5th Avenue. This intersection has always been busy, yet a few years ago the City removed the left turn lanes along Palmetto Park Road, in an attempt to make it feel more like a downtown area, like Las Olas Boulevard in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The new changes seemed great at first but as the City grew, so did the traffic. Recently, this intersection between Downtown and the Barricade Islands has become a huge concern, especially to the people that live within the Barricade Islands. On the corner of that intersection also lies the very popular Trattoria Romana, which is always busy and lacks sufficient parking. When visiting the location at around 5pm on a weekday, the traffic seems fine for rush hour. Yet the issue is usually weekends

when the restaurant is packed, and people are trying to get to the beach. Congestion gets especially worse when the bridge opens at the half hours. Without having a left turn lane, things become more complicated as each side has to go at separate times. These issues will only get worse once the constructions in Downtown ends and the buildings open to add more traffic onto Palmetto. These concerns have not gone unnoticed by neither the City nor the residents. However, the issue arises as they try to figure out the best and most cost effective way to handle this. At the meeting on Wednesday a representative from Calvin, Giordano & Associates presented about five different way to handle the situation. Yet with a room filled with upset residents, an hour into his presentation he was still trying to finish his first option since he was constantly being interrupted with questions and complaints, along with a few helpful suggestions. The Mayor, Susan Haynie, was among the crowd, along with Deputy Mayor Robert Weinroth and Councilmember Scott Singer. The presence of City Officials was impor-

suspend operations and announce the closure of the Stir Crazy Fresh Asian Grill Restaurant at the Boca Raton Town Center,” read the statement by the Company. According to Stir Crazy spokesperson, David Ayes, most of the legal issues are related to differences over lease arrangements. Ayers continued by saying anyone who has purchased a gift card at the restaurant, and would like their money back must simply send an email to comments@stircrazy.com with the gift card number along with their name and address to send the refund check. For anyone who sends this information, please allow three weeks to receive the refund check. If you have purchased a Groupon for the restaurant, contact Groupon directly to receive their refund. “Just in the short time since making our announcement, we’ve

received many emails and messages of support from our guests,” said Ayers.”Yes, we are looking at relocating within the Southeast Florida market (which includes Boca Raton) and we are making plans to conduct a poll soon about locations we might want to consider.” According to Ayers Approximately 60 people were employed at the restaurant; the vast majority of them on a part-time basis.

tant because this meeting was not hosted by the City, but their support and attention to the matter is to be noted. The Traffic Engineers have done intense study on this issue and are working hard to find a solution that pleases everybody. Although it is taking some time and much controversy, the firm must have a complete plan to present to the City Council by the end of April so that appropriate changes can be made. The City ought to be applauded for their

attention to the issues of resident and to the issues of traffic caused by development. Problems will always arise in growing cities, but what is important is how these problems are handled. Seeig workshops being held and inviting residents for their feedback is something that most cities do not have. So we residents can rest assured that no matter what is to come for this new Downtown Boca, our City is making sure it is taken care of effectively.

Inspiring Their Community Four extraordinary residents from the tri-county area will receive their earthly reward later this month when they are recognized as the 2016 African America Achievers. Jaret L. Davis, Dixie Lee HedringtonMiller, Gilbert Lancelot Raiford, Ph.D., and Ricky Wiggins will be honored on Wednesday, April 20, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. The event, sponsored by JM Family Enterprises and its automobile distributorships Southeast Toyota and JM Lexus, starts at 6:30 p.m. A group of community leaders from Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties selected the four from a pool of nominees. Among the judges were former achievers. Past honorees are retired Boca Raton police Officer Wayne Barton, longtime Delray Beach community leaders Vera Farrington, Alfred “Zack” Straghn, Perry Stokes and yours truly, a 2006 recipient. The late Jim Moran, automotive magnate, established the award 24 years ago to celebrate African Americans who serve their neighbors and communities in innovative

and inspiring ways. Mr. Moran knew that their good works were valuable to the people they helped - but beyond that, he knew that their spirit of service was vital to our national character. He would always say that people deserve recognition, especially those heroes who give so much and ask for so little in return. Along with saying “Thank You” to these honorees, it was his intent to encourage them to continue inspiring others in our community. This year’s Achievers exemplify the role models Mr. Moran wanted to recognize. Davis, co-managing partner of Greenberg Traurig law firm in Miami, has worked to build South Florida tech ecosystem, co-founding the eMerge Americas technology conference, which is preparing for its third year in Miami. His passion for technology turned into opportunity when he began his legal career during the dot-com boom of the 90s at Greenberg Traurig. He also volunteers as a mentor in the startup community, focusing particularly on African Americanowned companies. Hedrington-Miller is a professional art-

ist who discovered there were limited creative outlets for people with disabilities, when looking for activities for her son who is deaf. She wanted to create change and founded Friends & Stars, a nonprofit dedicated to the well-being of South Florida’s special needs children and adults through arts programs. She also works with museums and public spaces to display her students’ pieces. Through her efforts, participants gain confidence and pride, and many have gone on to pursue a career in the arts. Hedrington-Miller’s talent and passion for teaching demonstrates that limitations can be conquered when you are willing to try. Raiford has spent nearly 40 years teaching at the university level, most recently at Barry University in Miami. He studied social welfare and mental health policy, which propelled him to help underserved populations in his community. While tutoring children in Liberty City, he found that none of them had flown on a plane, eaten at a restaurant or traveled outside the county. So he raised money to take 25 youths on a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C. to experience the city’s culture and

history. Doc is a true resource to those in need and often takes people in to his own home and provides them with shelter and assistance. Wiggins has been mentoring children in the community through the I Have a Dream Foundation for 20 years. I Have a Dream works with low-income students from elementary school to college. He motivates his students, fueling the desire to learn and think beyond their current environment to realize their full potential. He has encouraged, inspired and pushed a generation of young people to stay on the path toward completing school and pursuing higher education. Often times, Wigging is a father figure to children who lack a consistent positive role model. He knows every child is capable and deserving of a helping hand on their path to adulthood. As a proud member of this AfricanAmerican Achievers fraternity, I am happy to welcome these four new members and pledge to help them further Mr. Moran’s wish to continue inspiring others in our community.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Attempt to be a Better Listener! In recent days I’ve been reading a new book I bought, entitled, “The Listening Life” (Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction). Author Adam S. McHugh establishes that “hearing is an act of the senses, but listening is an act of the will. In listening you center not only your ears but also your mind, heart and posture on someone or something other than yourself.” It’s much easier to open one’s mouth than the ears; yet, listening is always imperative, while talking is not necessarily so! Don’t allow prevailing noises to block your ears and prevent you from embrac-

ing messages you can’t afford to miss! More often than not, an individual will forfeit what’s being spoken because only the body is present in a conversation, while the mind and the ears are totally distant, or fully absent. Yet, no meaningful conversation can succeed unless words, phrases, and meanings are clearly exchanged! It’s easy to find varied courses on public speaking available, but practically impossible to encounter programs that can make you a good, or better, listener. And just like a plethora of courses exists to improve an individual’s speaking skills,

what is missing is training that increases a person’s ability to listen and appropriate the message being conveyed! Speech is a type of action intended to produce a variety of other meaningful actions into the listeners. Yet, this can only happen among those who acquire and develop the necessary apparatus for being good listeners, providing them the ability to transform a challenging message received into fruitful, ongoing action. Author McHugh also indicates that “the sort of people that we become is, in large part, determined by the voices that we choose to listen to,” reminding also

that “the voices we want to hear are not always the same as the voices we need to hear.” Therefore, keep your ears ever attentive to new messages you need to hear, for you seldom know exactly when they may seek your response. One of the great essentials acquired through good listening, is the ability to amplify the message received into something more significant and permanent, for the greatest possible impact!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Getting ready for test and preparing for college can be tough and expensive- especially for those students wishing to use tutoring services to raise their grades and test scores. And when Justin Mazor experienced this first hand, hedecided to do something about it. Mazor, a junior at Spanish River High School, became inspired and wanted to help those less fortunate with tutoring and higher education planning. “I am launching TutorMeFree because after being tutored for standardized tests I’ve realized how much tutoring costs,” Mazor said. “I then thought about how kids who can’t afford tutoring are at a major disadvantage. I also realized most schools require community service, but don’t have a way for students to earn it from home. So I put the two together and came up with TutorMeFree. “My overall goal is to not only deliver high quality, free tutoring for students who need

Delray Beach Shooting Leaves 18-year-old man Dead By CRA News Service DELRAY BEACH – Police have charged a 38-year-old man in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man earlier this week. Jean Wesner Desty was booked into the Palm Beach County jail early Wednesday on a charge of murder while engaged in a certain felony offense. Police have not released the name of the victim, however witnesses identified him as Herman Denis. The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Southwest 9th Street. Witnesses told police that the man was seated in the passenger seat of a silver Cadillac Escalade when the shooter got out of another vehicle and fired a shot through the window. “The driver of the Escalade drove the injured man to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later,” according to a release from the Delray

it, but also serve as a great place for students to give back to the community.” In the future, Mazor hopes to reward his topperforming tutors with scholarships as well. Mazor, who is a member of the National Honor Society and Distributive Education Clubs of America, hopes to expand the service in the future, and not only make it local to his home area. “I hope to cover as much area as possible since it is an online service and anyone with Internet access can get to the site,” he said. “In the beginning however, I would like to start off small scale to make sure the service is working and our servers can handle it properly.” Once he achieves that goal, Mazor hopes to grow TutorMeFree nationally and internationally for children of all ages and in other languages. TutorMeFree is currently live on the crowd funding source site GoFundMe. He hopes visitors to the site can see how important these tools are to help others prepare for their academic future. “I hope to make TutorMeFree as accessible as possible to everyone,” he said. “I am making it an online web-app so students can go to the library if they don’t have devices capable of accessing the website. I am very excited about the launch of TutorMeFree and the positive impact it will have on school age children.”

Beach police. Detectives think Desty and the victim may have had previous issues with each other and may possibly have been in a fight before the shooting. After hearing from witnesses that a red Toyota Camry was seen at the shooting scene, officers headed to a home where they thought the Toyota may have been. “While officers were at the house, the red Toyota arrived with a woman and a man inside,” according to the release. “The man had blood on him. Detectives have detained the two.” Tuesday’s homicide was the third this year in the city and the 17th in County for 2016. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Detective Stephanie Kearney at 561-243-7800 or report anonymous information to Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS (8477), online at www.crimestopperspbc. com or by texting tips@cspbc.com.

8th Annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with DisabiliTies a Resounding Success The American Disabilities Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving people with special needs and their caregivers, emphasized healthful living and quality of life at its recent “8th Annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities.” The nation’s largest free, one-day event for people with special needs, took place Saturday, March 12, at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, Florida. “With over 4,000 children, teens, adults and wounded warriors in attendance, supported by 500 volunteers, this year’s guests were introduced to a variety of learning opportunities, health assessments and sporting events,” said Jay Van Vechten, Executive Director of the American Disabilities Foundation. “Our hope was to inspire guests to recognize the true potential of their abilities, instead of focusing on their disabilities, while also learning how to maximize their healthful living potential.” On Spanish River Park’s expansive oceanfront beach, the City of Boca Raton provided roll out mobility mats for the day to make the beach accessible for those using mobility devices. Bash guests, many visiting the beach for the first time in their lives, discovered games and activities designed and supervised by professional recreational therapists from Memorial Hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital at the Delray Medical Center. Games on the beach and in the park were under the direction of former New Orleans Saints NFL Linebacker Ray Shipman, manager of Adaptive Sports and Recreation at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute. Shipman

provided participants with new options in low impact sports created exclusively for people with disabilities. Wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball were among the highlights. Assisting the professionals was a team of physical therapy students from Nova Southeastern University. Boca’s famed YMCA Aquatics Program provided professional swim instructors and lifeguards helped guests swim and enjoy gentle surfing experiences close to shore. Nine water wheelchairs allowed participants to transfer from their own chairs into water accessible chairs that could roll them into the sea. For those unable to participate in beach activities, Michigan Lake Products constructed an accessible viewing stand for the day, placed close to the dunes. Wheelchair users were able to park and enjoy all that unfolded before them, including overhead champion kite flying. Deeper inside the park an oasis of calm was created for guests at the Mind, Body, Spirit Center where yoga and meditation were the order of the day, providing coping techniques for those living with pain and stress. Guests with neuro-muscular challenges, such as Parkinson’s disease, learned dance techniques taught by dance professionals from the Boca Ballet Theatre. Participants discovered that dancing, even with challenges, can improve core strength, range of motion and self-confidence. Other programs were designed to offer guests the chance to learn new skills, to become more independent, to improve self-esteem, increase motivation, improve mood, reduce stress and even lower blood pressure.

For the first time ever, the Boating & Beach Bash provided Bash attendees with a chance to get their blood pressure taken by nursing professionals from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Boca Raton Regional Hospital and pharmacy students from Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic Universities. Dental students and their professors provided complimentary dental screenings as well. Guests and their caregivers, were able to chat with medical professionals about their health concerns and medications, while picking up free wellness materials to bring home with them. With the support of 2016 Bash sponsors, including title sponsor, Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Family Foundation, along with TD Bank, the EM Lynn Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, everyone’s favorite Bash offerings were firmly back in place, beginning

with free admission to Spanish River Park. Guests enjoyed a complimentary barbecue lunch with beverages donated by PepsiCo. On the Intracoastal Waterway attendees were treated to boat rides aboard 17 yachts, loaned for the day by their generous owners. All boating activities were supervised by the U.S. Coast Guard. Throughout the park, more than a dozen costumed action heroes mingled with guests, along with clowns, face painters, and a half dozen musical performers. A “Kids’ Fun Zone,” sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital was very popular with youngsters, while DJ’s with Cerebral Palsy played popular dance music, as service dogs and miniature therapy ponies wandered among the guests. Even Ronald McDonald was on hand giving out toys and doing magic tricks to the delight of young and old alike.

New Concept Developed for Glades Road and I-95 By Veronica Haggar Back in 2009 a plan to expand Glades Road into an 8 lane section was not well received. Since then, the Florida Department of Transportation has been working on developing an alternative plan. Last week, Louis Costa, project manager of the AECOM consulting firm, explained how two ramps would be built. One ramp traveling west from the FAU main entrance which crosses over Airport Road, and a ramp heading east beginning at Northwest Executive Center Drive. “The preliminary concept involves keeping a 6 lane section but separating the I-95 bound traffic on a physically separated ramp. We call it an auxiliary lane,” said Costa. “Basically we take out the traffic that is going to I-95 early enough at both ends of the project so that traffic can flow freely on Glades Road.” According to Costa, the lanes would be reduced to include 7 foot buffered bicycle lanes. The concept has a safer plan for pedestrians

as well. The sidewalks would be relocated to the inside rather than the outside of the ramps so pedestrians would not have to be crossing within the interchange, Costa explained. The new ramps separate I-95 bound traffic from Glades Road traffic and would give drivers more space and time to decide whether to continue on Glades Rd or take the I-95. According to Fausto Gomez, project manager of the Florida Transportation Department, the original concept had an estimate of nearly $51.4 million. Even though there’s not an estimate for the new project, Gomez guaranteed it will be a lot less than the original project. Gomez said construction could begin in 2017. “I think (the new concept) really achieves the purpose without adding a lot more asphalt,” said Susan Haynie, mayor of Boca Raton.

Red Apple Supplies Invites Teachers to Shop for Free School Supplies By CRA News Service

Teachers at some Palm Beach County Title 1 schools now have a special opportunity to stock their classrooms with free supplies and items they need throughout the school year, long after their original inventory has been emptied. Everything from pencils, crayons and copy paper are what these teachers, who need them the most, can get for their classrooms, and are now conveniently contained in this little store dubbed Red Apple Supplies. “Our goal is to help as many classrooms possible as quickly as we can,” said Christina Lambert, CEO and president of the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. “Our growth plan calls for us to start small, but we are thrilled to be serving nine schools this spring, twice as many as we expected.” Red Apple Supplies is a project of the Education Foundation, a non-profit organization, which helps to fund programs of the School District through partnerships with community leaders, businesses and the philanthropic communities. It is stocked by entirely donated goods. The program is being run from two pilot schools in West Palm Beach until a new permanent location opens up on Florida

Avenue. Teachers in the Glades area can shop at two local schools so they don’t have to come to the east coast to shop, said Laura Bessinger-Morse, program officer for the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. Organizers and teachers say all of the supplies will specifically benefit students at the 134 Title 1 schools in Palm Beach County. One hundred and thirty four of the county’s 185 public schools are considered Title 1, which mean 50 percent of the students are on free or reduced lunches. The Foundation recently held a soft launch, attended by about 40 guests, board members and staff. The event gave the community a chance to explore the free school supply store before teachers were able to begin ‘shopping’ in March. “We received a positive response to the program, heard great ideas from the guests, and enjoyed conversations about the store’s future growth and service goals,” Lambert said. Teachers are allowed to return once every month to get more, which many say is a lifesaver. Red Apple Supplies is beginning its operation with a small number of highest needs schools and will build its service capacity annually.

Boca Raton Emergency Services To Get Upgraded Dispatch System By Casey Westfall Boca Raton Fire Rescue and Police Department’s dispatch system is about to get a much-needed upgrade. The current system, which has been in use for 16 years, will be replaced with a new system that was approved by the City Council during their meeting on Tuesday, March 22, who voted to spend $3.5 million on the upgrade and maintenance for it. The new system is designed to be faster and more reliable, and will incorporate multiple agencies in the city, instead of just the police and fire department. Officials say that this will allow for better communication in times of emergency, and will hopefully reduce response times. But the upgraded technology is not the only change coming to emergency services. During the meeting, City Council also approved the construction of a new $2.2 million

communications center to house the new dispatch system. The communications center will be 12,000 square feet, which is more than twice the size of the current, 5,000 square foot dispatch center, and is slated to be completed by January 2017. In order to bring the new facility to maximum capacity, the city is looking to hire up to 10 new dispatchers and supervisors and has increased the salaries of the positions to attract applicants. Previously, the yearly salary for dispatchers was around $44,000, and supervisors earned close to $48,000 a year. But the city has increased the year salaries for dispatchers to around $74,000, and supervisors will now earn a yearly salary of close to $81,000. The salary increases are not just for the new applicants, though. In order to retain current dispatchers and supervisors, the salary increases apply to them, as well.

“Marguerite” a Bittersweet Comedy About a Talentless Singer with Money to Burn

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

St. Patty’s Day at the Dubliner On Thursday, seven of us, mostly my Black Hat Diva’s enjoyed terrific Corned Beef and Cabbage at the Dubliner in Mizner Park. There were Irish Step Dancers, a dancing baby, and a spinning wheel game with tee shirts, hats and prizes given out. All in all a great fun day.

Musical talent is a mysterious thing. Some people are born with it. Others can spend a lifetime trying to develop it and still fail. Such is the dilemma of “Marguerite,” a bittersweet French comedy about a wealthy but talentless woman who aspires to be an opera singer. Writer-director Xavier Giannoli based his script loosely on the real-life Florence Foster Jenkins, who was a wealthy American socialite who fancied herself a great singer. Because she paid all the bills, no one had the nerve to say what they really thought. Giannoli has transported the character and story to Paris, 1920. The name Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot) may be a sly reference to American comic actress Margaret Dumont, who was the favorite comic foil of the Marx Brothers comedies. Marguerite lives on a large estate outside the city, with a full staff and an all-purpose butler named Madelbos (Denis Mpunga), who knows more about Marguerite’s quirks than anyone. Marguerite’s husband Georges (Andre Marcon) puts up with his wife’s delusions because his business is failing and she foots all the bills. The only singing Marguerite does is in practice and before a private music club before fellow socialites. The club members quietly laugh behind Marguerite’s back as she sings off-key, off-tempo, and

BocaLead

with mangled pronunciation. It takes a certain talent to sing as badly as Marguerite and keep a straight face. Catherine Frot has that talent. She worked previously in 2006 with co-star Andre Marcon in another music-themed movie, “The Page-Turner.” As a matter of fact Frot is downright poignant when her character, at the urging of a cynical music critic (Sylvain Dieuaide), decides to book a theater, hire an orchestra and put on a public performance. Contrasting with Marguerite is a beautiful young woman named Hazel (Christa Theret), who has an equally beautiful voice and real talent. For pure comic relief there is Michel Fau as foppish, washed-up opera singer Atos Pezzini, who for a handsome sum agrees to be Marguerite’s vocal coach. There is nothing sadder than a delusional character who does not recognize her own delusions. That’s where the bitter part of bittersweet comes in. It helps to have a passing knowledge of famous opera arias to chuckle at how badly Marguerite bungles classics. It is a rueful chuckle. Anyone who has ever done some performing has run into such delusional characters. Like Marguerite’s fictional friends, it is hard to break the bad news, so we just grin and bear it. Three and a half stars

For six years, The Boca Raton Tribune has been a staple in the Boca Raton community. When we started back in 2010 as nothing more than a simple community blog putting out news to a city that greatly missed its local newspaper, we never expected to get to where we are today. Yes, we wanted to be a strong voice in the community, we wanted to be relevant to the citizens, give them news that they would otherwise not get from the bigger papers, but we wanted to do all that with online. However, we quickly found that our readers were iching, begging for us to release a printed edition.

April 1 - 7, 2016

So we did. On March of 2010, we released our Edition 0 of what, at the time, would be a monthly publication with news from the city and surrounding areas. The buzz got bigger and bigger, and soon enough we began publishing every other week, until we decided that a weekly paper would be where we would stay. We are very proud of everything we have accomplished in just six years. We are proud of the interactions we receive from readers, and the feedback we always get when we are working on stories that affect your day-today life. Although we understand that we will not always beat dailies when it comes to breaking news, we do know that we can beat them when it comes to the in-depth coverage that only a community paper can do. Community papers are the original social media. People love to grab our paper to see the latest news, but also to see their faces in the pictures, or their organizations in the print. The Boca Raton Tribune is proud to be Boca Raton’s only true Community Newspaper. In the last three municipal elections, we were able to give the city our projections a day ahead of the elections and be correct every step of the way, even when the candidate’s own polls said otherwise. Last year we decided to cement our place in the community even further by creating

The Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forum, where over 100 residents filled the Wayne barton Study Center to hear the views of the three candidates running for City Council on a myriad of topics.

We have continuously shown support to our city and many organizations as we have been sponsors of some of the most important events in and around the city of Boca Raton, including, the Chris Evert Tennis Classic, Miami City Ballet, Boca Bacchanal, Boca Raton Food and Wine Festiva, Lynn University Music Series, Boca Raton Fine Art Festival, Boca Raton Green Market, Boca Raton Burger Battle, Let’s Move Boca Health and Wellness Fair, Boca Chamber Expos, OPAL, Pathway to the Stars, Boca Beach Bash, and many others. In these past six years, we have also won our share of awards by the Independent

www.bocaratontribune.com

Free Papers of America (IFPA), and the Community Papers of Florida (CPF). In 2015 we were awarded the Advertising & Editorial Excellence for our advertisement campaign with European Wax. That same year, we won the Milton & Bernice Beckerman Community Service Award for our outstanding service to the community of Boca Raton by the Community Papers of Florida. The City of Boca Raton has accepted us with wide open arms these last six years, and our hope is that in the next six year we continue to work as diligently as we did in our first six. It won’t be easy, there will be troubled times, but anything that is worth doing was never easy, if it was, everyone would be doing it. Thank you Boca Raton for an amazing six years, and here’s to plenty of more anniversaires we will celebrate together.

BARRY’S BUZZ

By Robert J. Tamasy

By Barry Epstein • Stir Crazy has stopped serving customers in Boca Raton. The restaurant closed for good Monday after 15 years at Town Center at Boca Raton, citing ongoing legal issues with the operator of Town Center mall, Simon. The lease-related dispute has been going for one to two years. • Office Depot CEO Roland Smith and Staples CEO Ron Sargent are scheduled to testify this week in Washington, D.C., in the Federal Trade Commission’s court challenge to Staples’ $6.3 billion acquisition of Office Depot. Court documents show Smith and Sargent as the last two witnesses on the list this week in U.S. District Court before Judge Emmet G. Sullivan. Staples and Office Depot, which employs about 2,000 at its headquarters in Boca Raton, are battling to complete the acquisition that Office Depot shareholders approved last May. The FTC voted in December to oppose the merger, saying it would harm competition and drive up prices for purchasers of bulk office supplies. • Mr. Prime Steakhouse, 2,500 sq. ft. at 8177 Glades Rd. is for sale. Rent is $8,800/ month Gross, 5 yr. lease w’ (2)5 year options, 85 seats. Great visibility from Glade road in shopping center, beer and wine license, asset sale with great potential. Contact A. The Renaissance Boca Raton now presents an enhanced design that plays homage to the brand’s new “Fearlessly Chic” design philosophy, which centers on a contemporary high-low design approach with indigenous touch points to capture a spirit of wanderlust that inspires guests to explore the neighborhood and discover the unexpected. For more information on the reinvented Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel, visit the website, twitter and Facebook. • As Boca Raton readies to upgrade its 911 calling system, it’s also making a strong push to bring its staff to full capacity. The

city is seeking applicants to fill 10 open dispatcher and supervisor positions. This week, the city rolled out higher salaries for employees to lure applicants and to retain its current staff. The hiring initiative comes as the city recently announced plans for a new $2.2 million state-of-the-art communications center and allocated $3.5 million for new radio technology and maintenance. Overall, these improvements should provide even faster emergency response times for the public. • The scoreboard on baseball field 5 in Sugar Sand Park hasn’t worked for so long, nobody remembers when it was still functioning. But commissioners are likely to vote on fixing it and moving the center field scoreboards on fields 5 and 6 at the next meeting of the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District April 4 in Sugar Sand Park Community Center. The city’s Recreation Services’ department estimate is $34,330 for both scoreboards. A breakdown of each is $16,395 for field 5 and $17,935 for field 6. The electrical alone is estimated at $7,700 on field 5 and an additional 20 percent for field 6 with a deeper fence, according to a March 14 memo to the district. Fields 5 and 6 are used by Boca Raton Little League Baseball and 20 to 24 traveling teams, some from nearby communities including Delray Beach and Deerfield Beach. • It’s a parking lot full of great vendors at the Boca Raton Green Market, in its 19th year, open every Saturday, 8am to 1pm, at the southwest parking lot of Royal Palm Place, S. Fed. Hwy, and SE Mizner Blvd in downtown Boca Raton, offering farmto-table, fresh-picked produce from local growers, plants and flowers, prepared foods, doggie treats, cooking demonstrations, and lots more. Live music on the Piazza stage this week features Jim Kovalcik on flute and Jason Hanley on keyboards with their own special brand of music. • The Palm Beach International Film Festival is April 6 – April 14, 2016. The Value of Having Many Advisers Some time ago I received a phone call from a friend who told me about a new business venture he was planning. He asked if I, being a writer, could come up with a catchy, marketable title for the enterprise. My friends know me as the guy who is never at a loss for words. Before starting to think of clever names for the business start-up, I asked my friend if he had done his due diligence in researching the pros and cons of this particular type of company. He said he had already done that, and was eager to get underway. I had no background in that type of business, but two of my friends had engaged in ventures like that in the past. So I urged my friend to contact them and ask for their feedback. My desire was not to discourage him or change his mind, but to ensure he had examined all aspects of the proposed business to avoid problems in the future. Years ago I learned an important principle of decision-making. We tend to make decisions based on emotion, then justify those decisions with facts – facts to support the course of action we want to take. Sometimes this works, but other times an emotions-first, facts-second approach can lead to disaster. Feelings can and frequently do cloud sound judgment. So how do we avoid this potential pitfall? By seeking advice and wise counsel from people we trust – even those who are not certain to agree with and support whatever we wish to do. The book of Proverbs has much to say on this topic. For instance, it states, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” (Proverbs 11:14). A similar passage tells us, “Plans fail for lack

of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22). Here are other principles from Proverbs that relate to decision-making and seeking advice from others: Be wary of trusting our own judgment alone. Decisions – especially hasty ones – can be very easily justified and excused. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if I do not act now, I will miss out!” we reason. Or we tell ourselves, “They (those who disagree with us) simply do not understand.” But Proverbs 28:26 warns, “He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.” Seeking advice from others can reveal faulty thinking. Are we making decisions based on emotions, or without considering all the factors involved? Wise advisers can offer assurance – or reveal flaws in our reasoning. “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice”(Proverbs 12:15). Humbling ourselves to listen to advice is itself an act of wisdom. Turning to others for their counsel can seem humbling, especially when we already believe we are right. But if our goal is to make the right decisions, the humility to consult with others is an asset. “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise” (Proverbs 19:20). “Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words o f knowledge” (Proverbs 19:27). It is said that “Hindsight is 20:20.” In seeking wise counsel – especially when pondering difficult, complex decisions – others can offer their own hard-earned “20:20 hindsight” without our having to gain it through the pain of foolishness and failure.

Arrests Made In Connection To Fatal Shooting Monday By Casey Westfall A suspect involved in the fatal shooting that occurred early Monday morning has been arrested by Boca Raton police. Dylan Cirillo, 24, and Matthew Bauer were involved in an argument with David Bartolino, 44, around 4 a.m. The incident happened in front of Bartolino’s driveway, near NE 28th Street and NE 2nd Avenue. Bartolino eventually retreated to his home, where he met up with Thang Nguyen, 62, who had a gun on him. Both men returned to the driveway, and according to Cirillo’s account, Nguyen aimed his gun at him and Bauer, telling both men to get on the ground. Cirillo, who had a Glock 42 handgun concealed in the waistband of his pants, drew the weapon and shot both Bartolino and Nguyen. Bartolino suffered a wound to the arm, while Nguyen’s injuries were more severe, and upon arriving at Delray Beach Medical Center, he passed away. After Cirillo shot him, Bartolino grabbed Nguyen’s gun, and fired multiple shots in the air, hoping to grab the attention of neighbors. Following the incident, Cirillo and Bauer fled the area, but later contacted police at the Pollo Tropical on Federal Highway, where they

were taken into custody and questioned. Bauer faces no charges, while Cirillo, who does not have a concealed carry license, is being charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a license. Since police believe Cirillo’s actions were in self-defense, he is not being charged with murder. Bartolino, being a convicted felon who has been arrested seven times on felony charges since 2002, is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During their court appearances on Tuesday, Cirillo was released on a $3,000 bond, while Bartolino was ordered to be held on a $100,000 bond. Boca Raton police are still conducting their investigation, and advise anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Detective Scott Hanley at (561) 338-1344, or to call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

Owls Soar To The Top Of New Ranking By Alyssa Lamp Florida Atlantic University, which was once the underdog, is now ranked to the top of the pack of Florida public universities by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG), which oversees the State University System. Out of a total of 100 points FAU ties with the University of Central Florida with 84 points. The ratings are based on whether schools did well or improved in areas such as graduation rates, job placement and how well schools are serving minority and low-income students. Just behind FAU and UCF this year is University of Florida with 82 points and University of Southern Florida with 79 points. Placing fifth was Florida International University (76), followed by Florida State University (68), Florida Gulf Coast University (67), and Florida A&M University (65). The last three schools were New College of Florida (59), University of West Florida (57), and University of North Florida (56). Kathryn Edmunds, current student body president says, “It is an incredible time to be a part of the FAU community. The pride our students feel is palpable. Being number one shows hard work and dedica-

tion paid off. Thank you to Dr. Kelly, the administrators, professional staff, and of course, the students who made this all possible. The best is yet to come.” FAU has consistently improved in the rankings since the performance model was introduced just three years ago, ranking sixth for 2015-16 and ranking second from the bottom the first year the list was released, which at that time put the University at risk of losing all performance funding. Two years ago FAU ranked second to last and received no performance money, but last year they moved up to number six and received $11 million extra. The money was used to hire more advisers and faculty and give current employees raises and invest in technology to better track the progress of students. This year, FAU ranked first in the state in percent of bachelor’s graduates employed full-time or continuing their education one year from graduation. Over the last two years, FAU’s six-year graduation rate increased by 8 percent, from 40 percent to 48 percent. Over the next decade, FAU aims to position itself as a forward-thinking institution that caters to high-ability students.

Brazilian Flavor Hits the FAU Women’s Soccer Team

By: Stephanie Fonseca Geovana Alves, a forward for the FAU Women’s Soccer Team, comes from overseas and is FAU’s first Brazilian to play on the team. Alves, a Junior majoring in Exercise Science, was born in a small military town in the state of Roraima, Brazil. Born to a father who was active in the military, moving was a very common thing, little would she know that soccer would take her halfway around the world. “My mom would tell my dad and older brothers to get us kids out of the house, so they took us to the field to play soccer,” Alves recounts in a sit down interview. Alves was the fourth of five children, hav-

ing two older brothers who also played soccer they would see her speed and technique and knew that she was born to play the game. “My two older brothers are my best friends and they are the reason I started playing soccer,” Alves says. They saw her speed, her best friends became her coach and everything bloomed. She finally joined a team when she was eight years old and daddies little girl was the family’s soccer star. She looked into the distance reliving the moments, “it’s funny because of the three sons, it was daddy’s little girl who ended up pursuing soccer,” Alves laughed. But as she grew up and began to play club soccer in Brazil, she finally fully understood her passion for the game. And as her passion ignited into full flame she began to catch coaches’ eyes and started looking for opportunities abroad to play the game. In December 2012, an opportunity emerged in Bristol, England where Alves would be able to go to school to learn and perfect her English and also play the game she loves so much. But while in Bristol, Alves got an

email from Coach Lessa from Iowa Central Community College, inviting her to play soccer for their team. Alves and her parents agreed to the offer from Coach Lessa and Iowa Central and in the summer of 2013 she moved to Iowa and began as a forward hoping to catch the sights of some large colleges. “Coach Lessa was extremely helpful, not only did she help me become a better player but she also helped with all of the details with my move to Iowa,” Alves says. Her sophomore year, a flame ignited and she was on fire. Her passion and skills got her selected on to First Team Junior All American. But, how Alves got to FAU was an interesting story. In an interview with FAU Women’s Soccer Head Coach, Coach Baker, he recounts how initially another young lady had emailed the Soccer Department about her interest in playing for FAU. But when Coach Baker and Coach Montgomery, reached out to coach Lessa, “She told us, ‘you don’t want the player who has emailed you but we might have a player that would interest you,’” said Baker. Coach Lessa proceeded to send over Alves’ highlight tape, “and it didn’t take too long of watching the footage to know that Geovana was a pretty special talent,” said Baker.

Being that Alves was selected for the First Team Junior All American, she also got offers from UCF and Arkansas. But everything pointed to South Florida, so Alves decided to bring her talents to the Owls. With her start at the Owls this fall the Coaches were hopeful to see what she could add to the team. “She’s a tremendous young lady and a phenomenal athlete,” says Baker, “she’s got great pace and has shown that she can create chances and score a lot of goals.” As the season began, Alves did not disappoint and she showed her coaches and her team that she was not a one trick pony and brought more than just speed to the team. “She has scored on break aways, in traffic, with her head and her feet. She has an unpredictability,” said Baker. The only thing Coach Baker would like to work on with Alves as she progresses through the season into the off season, is to play with her back to goal so that she can turn and get faced with the goal. However, in past years there was one problem. FAU’s opponents knew that if they closed down Claire Emslie, the face of FAU Women’s Soccer and FAU’s leading goal scorer, they knew they had closed down FAU. “But now,” Baker says, “if you stop Claire, you better watch out for Geo.”

Boca Christian Football Stars Commit to Universities By: Stephanie Fonsenca Boca Christians Football program has been evolving over the years. After bringing in former NFL players on to their coaching staff, the program got a face lift. After their almost perfect season of 9-1 back in 2013, the team has continued to maintain their dedication to excellence. The hard work from this season played off for two players so far, Quarterback for the Boca Christian Blazers, Ryan Rhoden, and Running Back, William Craven. This past week both players signed to partial rides and committed themselves to a

university. Ryan Rhoden, committed to Jacksonville University, a Division 1 football program in Jacksonville, Florida. Rhoden got a 95% football scholarship to play for the JU Dolphins, and turned down offers from Davidson College and The Citadel, a Military College in South Carolina. “I’m really excited about playing for Jacksonville University, they’ve sent me my workouts already, so I’m excited to get started on that.” Rhoden will be transitioning back to be playing as a wide receiver, but he is embracing the change and ready to start the hard work so that he

Bobcats Fall to Belen Prep of Miami at Home By: Stephanie Fonsenca In a season of highs and lows, the Boca High Bobcats were looking for a win. Opening up the game both teams felt each other out and each put one in the back of the net. As the first quarter progressed, on a counter attack by a Belen Prep midfielder down the left side of the field and penetrates into the middle. Covered by 3 Bobcat players, he manages to get in front of the goal and rolls the ball into the back of the net. At the beginning of the second quarter, Belen Prep wins the ball and spreads out the Bobcat defense looking for a way in. That’s when Belen Prep’s forward finds a space and attempts to shoot, but the ball soars just right of the goal. But the Bobcats didn’t relent and kept pursuing the equalizing goal. On a mistake by the Bobcat offense, Belen Prep makes its way down the field and without a problem adds to the 2-1 score. With the score at 3-1 for Belen Prep, the Bobcats looked to close the gap as they approached Belen Prep’s goal. However all attempts, by the Bobcats, at the end of the half fell short as the last shot of the half soared past the goal. In the remaining minutes of the half on the counterattack, Belen Prep’s forward

exploits the number disadvantage. They pass the ball in front of the goal, and back to Garcia who adds to the score board. The score was 4-1 for Belen Prep at the half. As Boca High went to the locker room, they looked for a way to get back into the game. However after the opening whistle of the second half, Belen Prep adds one to the score board. The Bobcats kept fighting and did not relent. Opening up the fourth quarter, the Bobcats sought to open up Belen Prep’s defense. And early in the quarter, the Bobcats midfielder William Lane, scores as the Bobcats kept pursing to close the deficit. With 6’ minutes left in the game, the Boca High Bobcats regain momentum and put Belen Prep on the defense. With 1 minute left in the game, in response to Belen Preps counter attack, Bobcats’ defense launches the ball to Bobcats’, Kyle Romano, who was left one-on-one with Belen Prep’s goalie and rolls the ball into the goal. Boca High put up a fight, but all efforts still came up short as the Bobcats lost to Belen Prep 5 to 3.

can be the perfect fit for the team. Craven, signed with Division 2 team, Southeastern University of Lakeland, Florida. Craven is excited for the new step and ready for the challenge of college football. “It’s a great feeling, football is something that I enjoy, so I’m excited to be having the opportunity to play.” Coming off of a sprained right ankle injury, Craven looks forwards to working hard so that he could get game time as a freshman. Craven was given a half ride scholarship to play for SEU. Having two players sign to football pro-

grams, head football coach and former NFL Player, Clay Shiver, is more than proud. “They’re not just great players, they’re great young men. And I feel that that’s what sports needs today. The sports arena needs more men of integrity that can still be great players,” said Coach Shiver. “ I believe they’re going to make an impact very early, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do at the next level,” completed Coach Shiver.
