Boca Raton is a town where one can live, work, and play. However, according to Realtor.com, it’s also the laziest city in the nation.

“With an average temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit and 231 sunny days out of the year, it’s all too easy to be a beach bum in Boca Raton,” writes Yuqing Pan, the author of the story on Realtor. com.

Community FAU 2016 Gala Raises More Than $600,000 Florida Atlantic University recently celebrated its annual gala at FAU Stadium.

More than 800 guests attended the event — a record attendance — and the event raised more than $600,000. Proceeds will provide scholarships and support for FAU students.

“The gala was an amazing evening that served as a celebration of FAU being named the top-performing university in the state this year by the Florida Board of Governors,” said FAU President John Kelly. “It also raised a significant amount of scholarship money to provide current and future Owls who require financial assistance the opportunity to fulfill their academic dreams.

“The gala also was the perfect opportunity to announce a generous gift from Bobby and Barbara Campbell, and highlight our recently published book that features women who helped FAU succeed,” Kelly said.

During the evening, Kelly announced a $5 million gift from Bobby and Barbara Campbell to name the Bobby and Barbara Campbell Academic Success Center within the Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence. The gala also honored the women featured in “Legacymak-

ers: 100 Women of Distinction at Florida Atlantic University.”

City Council Approves Law Requiring Display of Underage Drinking Laws

On Tuesday, the city council passed a new law that requires local businesses that sell alcoholic beverages to display a notice that states the underage drinking laws.

“This ordinance makes retailers within our community who sell alcoholic beverages to post a small sign at a point of purchase that states the penalties of selling alcohol to underage individuals,” said Boca’s mayor Susan Haynie during the meeting.

The notice will also include contact information of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, 866-5407837, and the hotline 1-877-632-6721, for individuals to report any violations of the laws.

The law was proposed by Jonah Fisher, president of Teen Coalition in Action, a youth division of Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition, on a previous City Council meeting.

Council member Scott Singer proposed 4 amendments to the law: to eliminate a size requirement of the sign which was originally re-

quired to be 8 1/2 by 11 inches, to remove the Boca Raton Police Department number from the notice, to give a 60 business days notice to comply, and to eliminate jail time as a penalty for not posting the sign.

“This changes will create the desire goal,” said Singer about his proposed changes to the law. “It will minimize the burden, it will give people time to comply, it will eliminate jail time as a penalty, and it will facilitate better reporting so that the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages can get better data.”

After the changes made at Singer’s request, the council members voted 3-2 in favor of the measure.

Farewell to one of the Most Revolutionary Talents of our Time Last Thursday, television viewers received a respite from the unrelenting presidential campaign coverage with that grim news of the death of the seven-time Grammy winner Prince.

And I think it is safe to say that even the monotonous programming paused so the world could focus on the loss of this singer, songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist at the age of 57. Like most of you, I learned of his passing around the same time TMZ broke the news shortly after 10 a.m. but as night fell across my neighborhood, shock and grief gave way to a celebration of his life.

In the news business, we determine the depth of coverage an event will receive based on the impact or influence. Now, this was not just the death of any popular or famous musician. This was a legend who transcended genres as he brought the MTV generation into new realms of creativity.

For me, not since the death of Marvin Gaye on April 1, 1984 that the passing of another entertainer had such profound impact on me. Yes, Michael Jackson’s death was shocking and even Whitney Houston’s demise was sad but this one hit home in so many ways.

Most people think of Prince as a musician.

I however, had a chance to learn a little about his heart and passion for helping children of color the last two summers when I was part of a group that took two busloads of students to the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

He was instrumental in launching YesWeCode, an initiative to attract 100,000 lowincome youth to the tech industry and write code.

Prince agreed to headline the Essence Festival if organizers would promote the initiative. More than 100 youth from around the country participated in a hackathon during the days and since then, hackathons have been held all over the country. In a hackathon youth form teams with their peers, professional coders (computer programmers), designers (artists), and innovators (problem solvers and content experts) to build apps by rapidly prototype an idea — whose time has come.

I was privy to some of the conversations surrounding the negotiations and I recall hearing how he was protective of the youth, and strongly opposed them attending his concert at nights.

Hence more than 60 students from our area

participated in Essence’s first and second hackathon, organized by Qeyno Labs, an Oakland,Calif., group which puts on coding competitions for youth from underrepresented groups.

My respect for him soared after that experience.

Prince was not just any other singer who had a large following. This brother was a philosopher. He was a businessman who dared to challenge the forces and his business acumen sets him apart from the rest.

My friend and local radio personality “James T” Thomas devoted much of his show to the legacy and memories of Prince who he says epitomized what it means to do things your way.

This ahead-of-his-time musical innovator was fiercely protective of his independence.

He challenged his record company, Warner Bros., over control of his material and even his name. In fact, when the record label attempted to control his music, he protested by writing “Slave” on his face. He wanted to bring attention to the state of the industry. He left Warner Bros. and returned a few years ago. With first-hand knowledge, Prince spent the later part of his life educating young artists about the oppression

that comes with signing their names on a contract.

“With that mindset, this brother took on the music industry and said that we should be our own masters and not be owned by those companies who believe they are the masters,” Thomas told me. “The record companies wanted to own our creation and they wanted to sell it and give you pennies on the dollar. That’s the way the system was set up. But Prince went against the grain.

He went outside the box.”

I remember in 1993 when Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and became widely known as the artist formerly known as Prince. Many thought he was weird and could not see the bigger picture. But those who understand the struggle got his message.

“What we have not been able to master is the art of negotiation and recognizing our value in the work that we do,” Thomas, of WHQT Hot 105, said. “We let other people tell us what they will pay us rather than them recognizing our worth. And Prince was a person who was his own man and he knew the value of what he created and he was not going to allow the record labels to pimp him.”

In contemporary society, it’s extremely rare that any individual would bypass a mirror before starting the day in the presence of others. A mirror helps us see that we want to look to the outside world in the way we prefer and planned. One’s personal confidence is enhanced when a mirror reveals and confirms what we desire to see!

One problem, however, is that any mirror will only show one’s external appearance, for it cannot display a person’s inner condition. Yet, the way one feels on the inside inevitably is also manifested on the outside, at least in part. And that is a work which

depends only on one’s self, not anybody else.

Cosmetics, as effective or costly as these products might be, cannot really conceal one’s internal disposition unless a disciplined life, a positive outlook, and a healthy mind totally devoid of worries and guilt, will help convey a sense of serenity, and the inner beauty should be there!

Nobody can bestow beauty on another.

The truism that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is not always true, although some persons may recognize genuine beauty where others don’t! It’s true that one can

acknowledge characteristics of true beauty in a person, apart from what any cosmetic wonder is capable of producing!

Whenever true beauty is perceived in another, it’s not exclusively physical in nature but just as potent and real. True beauty usually stems from within and is manifested outwardly, as other lives are attracted to a beautiful person, and tend to gravitate in that individual’s direction!

Be sure that consistently you recognize factors in your life that must be improved, attitudes which require change, besides other positive gestures which will accentuate what

attracts you to others, as those desirable qualities, far more than mere looks or other extras keep you as an attractive personality. Beauty in humans is a feature that can be perennially restored, as each strives for a positive posture in all actions which are observed by many, and impact quite a few!

As you look in the mirror each day, be grateful for what you see, and continue making the inner and outer improvements which decisively contribute to your influence in society, and offer the personal satisfaction you are entitled to enjoy in daily life!

Local Hospitals Receive Safety Ratings in National Survey CRA News Service

West Boca Medical Center received top grade in prevention of avoidable errors, accidents, bed sores and infections, according to a study released this week.

The hospital received an “A” grade in the Hospital Safety Scores spring ratings published by the national nonprofit watchdog the Leapfrog Group.

“We are pleased to achieve the highest rating for the ninth consecutive time since the inception of this designation four years ago,” said Mitch Feldman, CEO of West Boca Medical Center, said in a news release.

“It demonstrates that our commitment to patient safety is continually making a difference.”

The Washington-based Leapfrog Group evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals based on data the hospitals file with the federal government as part of its treatment of Medicare patients. Leapfrog also asked hospitals to complete a questionnaire focused on information technology and employee education.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital slipped from a “B” last fall to a “C,” according to the Leapfrog’s report. The hospital also earned “A” ratings in the spring of 2015 and the fall of 2014, according to Leapfrog.

Messages left seeking comments from hospital officials were not returned by press time.

Delray Medical Center, the other Tenet hos-

pital, dropped to a “B” after six consecutive “As”.

A separate study commissioned by Leapfrog estimated 33,000 lives could be saved every year if all hospitals in the country “performed as safely” as A hospitals.

“It is time for every hospital in America to put patient safety at the top of their priority list,” Leah Binder, Leapfrog’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Tens of thousands of lives are at stake.”

Hospitals can save lives through their commitment to patient safety, she said.

“Those are the lives of your neighbors, your friends, and your family, protected at hospitals that don’t give up on the quest to be safe,” Binder added. “Ultimately, we want all hospitals to be A-level, because our communities deserve no less.”

The Leapfrog Group was formed in the 1990s among employers such as General Motors, FedEx, UPS and Toyota that were concerned that many of their workers were getting hurt in hospitals that were supposed to restore them to health. About 180,000 Americans die each year from preventable hospital errors such as infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families. If anything, scoring high in categories like available service applications and amount of massage centers only highlight the great leisure and luxury our city has to offer.

We might have been gotten the award for laziest city in America, but according to Livability.com, it’s also one of the best places to live. In their list of their top 100 best cities to live in, Boca placed 59th, ranking higher than Miami Beach, Berkley, California, and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In addition, Florida Atlantic University was ranked 5th in the website Best College Review’s list of the top 50 colleges located near the ocean, given the large amount of undergraduate and graduate programs (over 180), and the close proximity of the Boca campus to the beach (less than a mile away).

When it’s all said and done, the things that make Boca Raton “the laziest city in the nation” are also the things that make it such a great place to live.

But at the same time, Boca Raton far from being lazy. The city has a thriving business sector, with many successful businesses, including Office Depot and ADT Security, calling our city home.

Bobby and Barbara Campbell Donate $5 Million for Complex Recognizing the importance of academic success in sports, Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence recently took a major step closer to completion by announcing a $5 million gift from Bobby and Barbara Campbell to name the Bobby and Barbara Campbell Academic Success Center within the Complex. This generosity marks the latest gift in a successful fundraising campaign that secured more than $28 million for the complex in just 16 months.

The donation is the first time the Campbells have given to FAU Athletics and it enables FAU to begin the project’s engineering and architectural design process.

“It’s wonderful to have Bobby Campbell support our effort to build one of America’s most innovative student complexes,” FAU President John Kelly said.

“Our university is a rising star, and I believe promising student-athletes understand that coming to FAU will give them a great opportunity to push their ambitions to the highest level.”

The 12,000-square-foot Academic Success Center will be the cornerstone of the Schmidt Family Complex. It will provide FAU student-athletes with a comprehensive support program focusing on academic, personal and professional excellence. The Center will include nine tutor suites, a career center, computer laboratories and two study hall rooms to create an environment that fosters well-balanced development and reinforces the highest academic standards and performance while providing the resources to prepare them for careers beyond collegiate athletics.

The Schmidt Family Complex will be constructed adjacent to FAU Stadium and will play a central role in elevating FAU’s academic standing and will benefit students in all academic programs, including those not associated with athletic programs. In addition to the aforementioned centers and hall, the Complex will include centers for strength and conditioning, health and wellness and an indoor training facility.

“I’m thrilled to be part of making this stateof-the-art facility a reality at FAU,” Bobby Campbell said. “I have always championed educational and children’s issues and am proud to support the center that will help ensure FAU student-athletes’ academic success.”

In addition to the $5 million gift, the Camp-

bells have supported the annual Keeping Memories Alive Walk, benefitting the Louis and Anne Green Memory & Wellness Center at the FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, through donations and a large team of walkers for the past five years.

Bobby Campbell rose through the ranks of the shoe industry at Kinney Shoe Company eventually founding BBC International in 1975, which has become one of the leading children’s and athletic footwear design and sourcing companies in the world. He was elected into the Footwear Industry Hall of Fame in 2003.

Bobby Campbell serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, the Boca Raton Historical Society, the American Red Cross of Palm Beach County and Little Flower Children and Family Services.

The Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence received initial funding of $16 million from the Schmidt Family Foundation in December 2014, the largest single gift in FAU’s history. Many other donations have joined the Schmidt’s, including a $5 million gift from Christine E. Lynn to name The Christine E. Lynn Sports Medicine Center within the Complex. Announced in November 2015, it is Lynn’s first contribution to FAU’s Department of Athletics.

Additionally, in October 2015, Eleanor R. Baldwin, a longtime benefactor of FAU and FAU Athletics, donated $1 million to name the History and Tradition Hall within the Complex. Other notable donations include gifts from FAU Board of Trustees member Abdol Moabery and his wife Cathy; and Drs. Ann and Alan Aker — both couples gave $500,000.

“On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff we thank Bobby and Barbara Campbell for this transformative gift,” said Pat Chun, vice president and director of athletics at FAU. “Their generosity will allow us the opportunity to impact current and future student-athletes. The legacy of this gift will be lasting.”

FAU Athletics competes in 19 NCAA sports, and cheer and dance. The Owls’ 29,419-seat football stadium opened in October 2011. In September, the stadium’s field was named in honor of legendary coach and “father of FAU football” Howard Schnellenberger.

“Sing Street” is the Power of Music

Wow what a night! Sharon DiPietro, Chair of the Tri County Humane Society’s Doggie Ball at Boca West pulled out all the stops to make this one of the best events of the Boca Social Season. Guests feasted on Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail, sushi, sliders, Tattinger’s Champagne, cookies and chocolate dog houses and fire hydrants. A fabulous silent auction and live auction and great singing from Kendra Erika made the night totally fun and raised a lot of money for the Tri County Humane Society.

“Sing Street” could have been the story of my life, except it is set in Dublin, Ireland.

Writer-director John Carney has created another fable about the positive power of music, which he previously explored in “Once” and “Begin Again.”

This time it is a coming-of-age tale about a Dublin teenager, Conor (fresh-faced newcomer (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), whose family has fallen on hard times in the mid-1980s. His father Robert (Aiden Gillen) is an architect, but his commissions have dried up. Mother Penny (Maria Doyle Kennedy) has been cut back to part-time employment. Conor’s older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor) has dropped out of college. To cut back on expenses, Conor’s parents pull him out of his pricey Jesuit school and enroll him in the state-supported Christian Brothers School on Synge Street.

This is where I really relate to “Sing Street.” As a young teenager I had no athletic abilities and I didn’t much enjoy the company of academic eggheads.

With the help of my friend Marty Caron, I learned how to play guitar at age 14, which is the same age as Conor. At 15 Marty and I put together a band. It wasn’t to impress any girl in particular, but I learned girls in general like guys who play in bands. Music changed my life, and I have never let it go. I never will. I think John Carney understands.

• Matthew Modine walked over from his aunt Alice Modine’s house to the Whole Foods in the University Commons shopping center on Glades Road. “I walk 10 miles a day,” he said, checking his Fitbit.

The 57-year-old actor known for his roles in “Full Metal Jacket” and “Vision Quest” was in town for a visit before moving on to New York for the world premiere of his 7-minute short film “Super Sex” at the Tribeca Film Festival. The latest of his short films in his other persona as a filmmaker, stars Ed Asner, Kevin Nealon, Elizabeth Perkins and the Modines’ grown daughter, Ruby. Modine talked about his filmmaking and acting careers and what he’s up to now.

• Contingency plans for more ball fields in Boca Raton are tentatively being examined, in case the city won’t allow four more fields at Spanish River Athletic Facility at de Hoernle Park. The park’s second phase was announced in February 2014. But an agreement never happened between the city, which owns the land, and the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District. The district used taxpayer money to develop the park.

Phase II at a cost of $7 million calls for more ball fields, a field building, restrooms, bleachers and related amenities. The subject will go before the Boca Raton City Council, but hasn’t been put on a meeting agenda yet.

• Nobody quite knew what to expect when the city’s new Community Advisory Panel met for the first time. All but Palm Beach State College student president Jon Carter were seasoned volunteers from four disbanded city advisory groups. They stepped up to fill all 11 openings and were appointed by the Boca Raton City Council last February. So everyone knew what the goals would be as they assembled around a table for the first CAP meeting April 14 in the Boca Raton Community Center Annex, where the next meeting is set for 6 p.m.

The Character Of Leadership What is true leadership? Or to ask the question a different way, what are qualities of a good leader? Countless books and articles that have been written about leaders and leadership. Speakers have made careers traveling from city to city, speaking at dinners, meetings and conferences, offering their opinions about effective leadership. So it would be hard to find a definitive answer on which everyone could agree.

We think of good leaders as people skilled at getting things done – or motivating other people to get things done.

There are a variety of leadership styles.

Some people are directive, issuing orders to their subordinates. Others excel at delegating authority (as well as responsibility) to their underlings. And still others prefer to be more directly involved, employing a hands-on approach to leading their staff.

But whenever we consider individuals who have distinguished themselves from many of their peers, leaders who have proved themselves worthy of being followed, a common denominator seems to emerge: Character. So whether we’re interviewing someone for a top executive position, seeking to fill a middle management role, or even evaluating candidates for elective office – this being a Presidential election year in the United States – character should be among the factors we take into account.

Of course, here again we could engage in a spirited debate about what comprises “character.” It might be good to consider the time-tested wisdom of the Bible and how it describes effective leaders. As is often the case, the book of Proverbs is an excellent place to start. Here are some examples: Good leaders value wisdom. One benefit of modern technology has been limitless access to information and knowledge.

It cannot, however, provide us with wisdom. This can be attained only by seeking to rightly apply what we know.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures” (Proverbs 24:34).

Good leaders lean heavily on the counsel of trusted advisers. Knowing there are numerous ways of looking at a problem and many possible solutions, a good leader is not too proud to solicit the advice of trusted colleagues before proceeding in matters of critical importance. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22). “For waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers” (Proverbs 24:6).

Good leaders approach their roles with humility. We live in an age when the loud, brash and outspoken tend to receive the most attention, but there is something strangely appealing about those that do not think too highly of themselves.

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2). “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). “A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor” (Proverbs 29:23).

Good leaders speak with discretion. The spoken word can be used to uplift – or to destroy. Leaders measure their words for best effect. “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise” (Proverbs 10:19). “The lips of the righteous say what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse” (Proverbs 10:32).

Do you agree that strong character should be a consideration in the selection of leaders, regardless of the sphere in which they are expected to lead? Why or why not?

What is the state of character among many of the leaders you observe today, whether where you work, in your community, or even those who are celebrated by the media? Do you see many men and women you consider to be of high, strong character?

Which of the character traits that have been cited from Proverbs stand out in particular for you? Can you think of any other traits that might be equally important?

Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For Sinai Residences To Take Place May 3

The $265 million dollar premier senior living destination, Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, located on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s campus, has opened.

Residents started moving in early this year and continue to move in every day.

KOPMN Names 2016 Mothers of the Year

By CRA News Service KOP Mentoring Network has announced the five honorees for its 2016 Ladies of Distinction awards and picnic on May 7.

The distinguished honorees are Nancy Stewart-Franczak, Lisa Plepler, Rhonda Rogers, Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor and Vanessa Young.

The City of Delray Beach and CRA Media Group are sponsoring the picnic, which takes place at Catherine Strong Park, 500 SW 6th Street, Delray Beach, from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

The five were selected from more than 30 entries, organizers said.

“We had 37 nominations and most of them were very impressive,” said Robert Dodd, a spokesman for KOPMN, which has been honoring mothers on Mother’s Day for the past 24 years. “We picked the top five, which was not an easy task.”

A panel of past honorees and community leaders served as judges, he said.

After a seven year-tenure with IBM, Stewart-Franczak launched a graphic design and advertising agency 30 years ago. The Delray Beach resident closed the agency and today manages all the advertising, design and marketing of several local festivals including the Annual Delray Beach Garlic Festival. The two-day event is staffed by members of nonprofit organizations and to date, she has donated more than $600,000 to organizations serving education and arts.

Plepler is the director of the Arts Connection in New York City, an organization that provides high quality arts education and cultural experiences to children and teens in New York City public schools.

Her caring and philanthropic spirit extends far beyond the Big Apple to the streets of Delray Beach.

She has served as a consultant to KOPMN officials and has provided financial support to take hundreds of South Florida students on field trips, provide meals for the afterschool program and sponsor quality programming for the youth.

Rogers has volunteered more than 1,000 hours annually to various community organizations.

The Boynton Beach resident instilled in her sons, both college students, the gifts of strength, respect, discipline and kindness.

They value education and have focused career goals to give back to their community, a trait very much learned from their mother, nominator Mary Swinford wrote in her letter.

“When her sons were younger they were members of the Men of Tomorrow mentoring program, where Ms. Rogers volunteered and offered support to other single mothers like her,” Swinford wrote.

Taylor has been a champion for the underserved particularly those in poverty, homelessness, disabled and unemployed. She uses her communication and advocacy skills to ensure that the needy, especially the youth, are served and most importantly heard.

She has influenced public policy, which created the youth services department within the county government. The department fosters awareness and exposure to solutions that prevented young people from reaching their full potential. As mayor, she established the inaugural Mayor’s Ball, an annual catalyst to raise awareness and funds for homeless youth and adults in Palm Beach County.

Young, director of community outreach for the Kravis Center, works closely with the organization’s marketing department to broaden the center’s community efforts.

She also works with several community organizations, businesses and educational institutions to further the Kravis Center’s outreach initiative. More than 1 million students have been exposed to the arts, thanks to Young’s working closely with the Kravis Center’s education department.

“I am both humbled and deeply touched to be recognized,” said Young, who serves as a youth mentor, social justice advocate and volunteer was several community organizations. “I have always felt that being a parent to any child is one of the greatest honors that can be given to any human being.”

Past honorees include Boca Raton residents Rita Thrasher and Rachel VanNess, who also is a Delray Beach police sergeant, Beach community leader Ida Elizabeth “Libby” Wesley, Nancy Hurd, founder of the Achievement Center for Children and Families, Janie Ramirez, founder of Cinco De Mayo and La Paloma Folkloric Dance group and Vera Rolle Farrington, founder of the EPOCH and the Spady Museum.

sports New Blood in Boca Travel Soccer

A new travel soccer league, FC Boca Predators, has emerged for the city of Boca Raton.

What started as an out of the box concept became a reality that two soccer parents invested in.

In June of 2015, Anthony Tortolini and Raquel Aguilar had an idea, a new soccer program that could cater to soccer players in and around Boca Raton, who wanted to play more competitively than recreational soccer but wanted to stay out of the, what some consider as the soccer monopoly of Boca Raton.

Tortolini and Aguilar, saw that these boys fit an area that was not catered to and made it a point that “they’re not kickballers, they’re soccer players,” said Tortolini.

The start off was rough with only one team with barely the starting 11.

The means of finding a practice field, and equipment was difficult but Tortolini expressed how weathering the difficulties brought about an outcome that is blossoming.

The team started with six founding families who stuck with the team because of the differences that they brought to the field. A team that began playing beach soccer and indoor soccer as a way to start training and conditioning the players until they were able to get a field and could apply to play in tournaments. Little did Tortolini know, that another road block was ahead. Tournaments that he called told him that he had to be affiliated to an organization in order to join.

FC Boca Predators Take 3rd Place in Spring Classic Tournament

In a weekend where FC Boca Predators was hoping to get both their U-17 and U-15 teams into the Spring Classic Boys Weekend Tournament, the club had some disappointing news. Because of insufficient U-17 sign ups for the tournament, the team could have had an opportunity to play up in the U-19 division. But with a team comprised of 16 and 17 year-olds, families and coaches prefered to protect their players and sit out.

When the team became teams, he knew that he had to bring in help. Ex-professional Colombian soccer player, known as Choco, was brought on to coach the U-17 squad and Argentine ex-soccer player, Chike, took over the U-15 team.

Bringing a different concept to tryouts, Tortolini explains that he is incharge of the initial selection and from there the player is passed on to the coaches, where an unbiased second opinion comes into play, so that no one plays favorites.

But Tortolini makes it a case that this team intentions are different than the ones that Boca Raton offers. “I started this for the boys, this club’s top priority is what is in the best interest of these boys,” said Tortolini.

But having a strong root in his faith he also wanted to incorporate this into the team. It steared some families away but it also was the reason that it kept families around.

Trying to be different they brought an alternative method of training where a preliminary test, started by Real Madrid to examine player’s measurements, was given to their players as a means to find out where they stand and what needs to be worked on. The

test analyzes the players tactical and technical capabilities, along with there they stand psychologically and physically.

“Although they all failed, it gave the players a basis and a goal to strive for,” said Tortolini.

Their training Tortolini says, “it’s not a way to keep bodies busy.” For two hours, the coaches train the players technically, no scrimmages. The coaches seek to make their players better so that they can get better for their school teams and when the time comes even apply them for international soccer teams that the coaches have connections to.

The season is year-round with a two month winter break hiatus during December and January.

FC Boca Predators hold training three times a week, Thursday through Saturday at Sand Pine Park in Boca Raton.

The team moto, Tortolini says, “Is to build fine young men with a passion for soccer and it gives them a purpose.”

As they prepare for their Disney Cup International Celebration Cup in July, the Predators will be playing in the 9th Annual Palm Beach Cup and Sharks Soccer Cup and Showcase.

The 9th Annual Palm Beach Cup takes place the weekend of May 6th.

U-15 team came in 3rd place in the tournament that took place in Vero Beach.

FC Boca Predators finished the cup with a 3-1 and a 1-0 win and a 2-0 loss.

Goals were scored by Adrian mendez, Rodrigo Bonilla, Trace Tierney, and Ian Chahud.

The games were tight and a storybook penalty save by the Boca Predators 12 year-old goalie, Hector Nevarez, put the icing on the cake for the team.
