Boca Raton Native Set To Swim With “The Sharks”

Rachel Zietz was a 13 year old entrepreneur and lacrosse player when she founded Gladiator Lacrosse. Now at 15, she will appear on ABC’s Shark Tank, on May 3rd, with her product. Her journey all started when she participated in the Young Entrepreneur Academy Program, where she got the idea to start a business which would provide high quality lacrosse equipment at an affordable price. “Through a 33-week program called the YEA, I learned how to start, manage, and run a successful business,” Ziets says, “I’ve made every decision for Gladiator Lacrosse, from raw material and equipment design, to brand and creative development and marketing strategy.”

Community KOPMN Names 2016 Mothers of the Year By CRA News Service

KOP Mentoring Network has announced the five honorees for its 2016 Ladies of Distinction awards and picnic on May 7. The distinguished honorees are Nancy StewartFranczak, Lisa Plepler, Rhonda Rogers, Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor and Vanessa Young. The City of Delray Beach and CRA Media Group are sponsoring the picnic, which takes place at Catherine Strong Park, 500 SW 6th Street, Delray Beach, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The five were selected from more than 30 entries, organizers said. “We had 37 nominations and most of them were very impressive,” said Robert Dodd, a spokesman for KOPMN, which has been honoring mothers on Mother’s Day for the past 24 years. “We picked the top five, which was not an easy task.” A panel of past honorees and community leaders served as judges, he said. After a seven year-tenure with IBM, StewartFranczak launched a graphic design and advertising agency 30 years ago. The Delray Beach resident closed the agency and today manages all the advertising, design and marketing of several local festivals including the Annual Delray Beach Garlic Festival. The two-day event is staffed by members of nonprofit organizations and to date, she has donated more than $600,000 to organizations serving education and arts. Plepler is the director of the Arts Connection in New York City, an organization that provides high quality arts education and cultural experiences to children and teens in New York City public schools. Her caring and philanthropic spirit extends far beyond the Big Apple to the streets of Delray Beach. She has served as a consultant to KOPMN officials and has provided financial support to take hundreds of South Florida students on field trips, provide meals for the afterschool program and sponsor quality programming for the youth. Rogers has volunteered more than 1,000 hours annually to various community organizations. The Boynton Beach resident instilled in her sons, both college students, the gifts of

strength, respect, discipline and kindness. They value education and have focused career goals to give back to their community, a trait very much learned from their mother, nominator Mary Swinford wrote in her letter. “When her sons were younger they were members of the Men of Tomorrow mentoring program, where Ms. Rogers volunteered and offered support to other single mothers like her,” Swinford wrote. Taylor has been a champion for the underserved particularly those in poverty, homelessness, disabled and unemployed. She uses her communication and advocacy skills to ensure that the needy, especially the youth, are served and most importantly heard. She has influenced public policy, which created the youth services department within the county government. The department fosters awareness and exposure to solutions that prevented young people from reaching their full potential. As mayor, she established the inaugural Mayor’s Ball, an annual catalyst to raise awareness and funds for homeless youth and adults in Palm Beach County. Young, director of community outreach for the Kravis Center, works closely with the organization’s marketing department to broaden the center’s community efforts. She also works with several community organizations, businesses and educational institutions to further the Kravis Center’s outreach initiative. More than 1 million students have been exposed to the arts, thanks to Young’s working closely with the Kravis Center’s education department. “I am both humbled and deeply touched to be recognized,” said Young, who serves as a youth mentor, social justice advocate and volunteer was several community organizations. “I have always felt that being a parent to any child is one of the greatest honors that can be given to any human being.” Past honorees include Boca Raton residents Rita Thrasher and Rachel VanNess, who also is a Delray Beach police sergeant, Beach community leader Ida Elizabeth “Libby” Wesley, Nancy Hurd, founder of the Achievement Center for Children and Families, Janie Ramirez, founder of Cinco De Mayo and La Paloma Folkloric Dance group and Vera Rolle Farrington, founder of the EPOCH and the Spady Museum.

Boca’s Beach Makeover Suspended By Veronica Haggar The City of Boca Raton suspended the pumping of sand onto the Central Beach as the permit approached its deadline on April 30th and turtle nesting season begins. “Our permits with FDEP and the Army Corps of Engineers ended April 30,” said city spokeswoman Chrissy Gibson. During the month of March, crews started pumping sand onto Boca’s Central Beach expecting to be done by the end of April. Last week, crews left unable to finish the

$11 million project. “The contractor got a late start, had many weather delays and mechanical issues,” said Gibson. According to Gibson, after having completed about 20% of the job, crews will be back next year to finish the project. The city will not incur additional charges. A total of 530,000 cubic yards of sand were to be pumped into Boca’s Central Beach. The sand pumped into the beach has a lifespan of approximately 10 years.

She is involved in the sales process, maintaining the website, and handling all press inquires. Rachel says her biggest challenge in getting started with Gladiator Lacrosse would have been managing her business while keeping up with school, competitive lacrosse, and other extracurricular activities. “I’ve learned that time management skills are very important and since beginning the company I have developed these skills to make managing everything much easier.” While her friends are enjoying a leisurely summer, Ziets is managing inventory, balancing budgets, forecasting demands, and estimating profits for her company. Because of her dedication to Gladiator Lacrosse, Ziets believes this is why her line is one of the top sellers in it’s category on Amazon. Appearing on Shark Tank was also just a stepping stone for Ziets’s product. “I was very scared and nervous, but I also felt prepared.” Zietz says she approached the audition just like she does a lacrosse game, “you give your all and get in the zone. I know we have a great product.”

Rachel was not scared of one “Shark” more than another. All Sharks have a different way of looking at things and she presented her product to the group, not picking one out specifically. She can also not say whether a Shark invested in her company, but she can say she was able to answer their questions about her product and not be humiliated like some people have been. Casey Powell, an American professional lacrosse player, has recently partnered with Gladiator Lacrosse. He is now the company’s brand ambassador. The company now hopes to make a unique and lasting impact on the lacrosse community. In the future, Zietz is hoping to add more to the product line, such as a clothing line, water bottles, compression socks, and other lacrosse related items. She would like to include things in her product line that she believes there is a need for. “I use my own experience to decide which products to add to the line, because throughout practice and games I realize what types of items would help players excel.”

Make Your Mom a Priority This Mother’s Day I awoke one morning a few months ago and found myself writing my mother’s eulogy while still lying in bed. Throughout the agonizing ordeal, I kept hoping it was only a dream. I was praying that I would not have to deliver it. The night before, the doctor said my mother had a 50 percent chance of coming out of the coma, and if she did, the likelihood was very high she would be brain dead and remain in a vegetative state. When I left the hospital that night, I was in a state of shock. There was my mother in the Critical Care Unit with 17 tubes coming from her body. She had a sudden cardiac arrest some 10 or so hours earlier while on her third day of dialysis. The nurses told me she died for 21

minutes and had to be revived twice, once by paramedics while enroute and again at the hospital. My mind started racing. I had more questions than answers – when was the last time I told her that I love her? Will I ever get a chance to spend some quality time with her again? I kept praying and asking God to have His way and just let me hear her voice one more time again. Today, six months later, my mom is still here with us. And while she does not recall anything that happened that November afternoon, thank God she did not suffer any brain damage. In fact, those who saw her in that hospital room are calling her a modern day miracle. As we celebrate Mother’s Day tomorrow, I have a lot to be thankful for.

Yes, I am thankful for the years she fed me, changed my diaper, wiped my tears, bandaged my scrapes and cuts, patted my head, gave me a kiss and sent me on my way to become an adult. But more so, I’m grateful to God for granting her a new lease on life to enjoy another Mother’s Day with us. I am also thankful that on Sunday in church, I will be wearing a white boutonniere unlike my friends who will be wearing red because their mothers are no longer here with them. That’s why I made sure to send her a big bouquet of love on time and before all the florists was sold out this year. This experience forced me to pause and reflect. We sometimes unknowingly take favors such as having our mothers around for granted. Since then, there is not a week that goes

by that I don’t call my mom – to check up on her. And we are careful to end each conversation with “I love you.” If you can on Sunday, take her to lunch or dinner or give her a gift. If you are far away, like me, I urge you to make some time on Sunday to call your mom and let her know how special she is… and I pray she answers that phone. Before you hang up, be sure to say “I love you.” Those three little words will be the most welcome gift of all this Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to moms everywhere! Thank you for your love.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Enjoy Life While You Have It! A truly grateful person recognizes that life is a gift, and each moment of every single day offers all living individuals wonderful varieties of enjoyment at manifold levels. In spite of limitations which one’s health may impose, anyone can make the most of every opportunity! Creative people are never bound to a single format for living life to the maximum degree. In fact, they’re glad and grateful that they have plenty from which to choose. That way, life is more than just an adventure; it’s that also, but combined with a vast assortment of formats and experiences. Any person who can act genuinely alive, and truly grateful for the gift of life, will continuously go after new adventures, adequate to their age-level and health condition, and doable by someone prepared to

experiment. Nobody needs to be a slave to life, even when certain routines need to be observed. Certain experiences may be repeated as many times as one may desire, or discarded in favor of something else, or even when there’s nothing else one desires to try. For those prepared to utilize their creativity, countless new possibilities will continually appear. Life affords us enjoyment compatible with each age level and physical condition, whether what it entails is done alone or in the company of others. Even tasks which are accomplished with some regularity, can take on a new format, and made into significant, novel adventures. If living is to be maintained as an enjoyable activity, personal discipline must be

observed. I firmly believe that many people who complain about life in general, and lack the initiative to try new adventures, are those who tire themselves unnecessarily due to inadequate discipline, or who don’t take the initiative to inquire about new things to do, or who are not imaginative enough to ask the right questions, and do some necessary research in considering new alternatives to what they had done for years! Of course, a positive mental attitude is always a “must” as one gets up in the morning with readiness to face any challenge the new day shall bring, with creative plans to divide the hours into meaningful blocks, reserved for activities both planned and potential. Obviously, there always will be a steady menu of regular activities which precede, accompany, or take place only at the

end of work hours or other inbuilt operations of any given day. With pen and paper on hand, ideas can be recorded and each day can be apportioned for one or some of the activities being looked at to enhance one’s day. Individuals with a curious mind and a ready body to implement certain plans, will never face a boring day, nor hours with little or nothing to fill them in meaningful ways! What can’t be forgotten is that life in fleeting, one’s strength gradually diminishes, and illness and death are inevitable parts of life in the world. But as long as one is alive, even with limited powers, that one can and should enjoy life to the fullest. After all, ours is a beautiful world!

FAITH By Austin Pryor

The Number One Financial Mistake An approach we occasionally use in marketing my organization, Sound Mind Investing (SMI), is to ask, “What is the No. 1 financial mistake many Christians make?” Our answer: They ignore biblical principles when managing their money and follow advice from other sources instead. Do you believe that when you use God’s protective biblical principles as a guide, you will manage your money more wisely and prudently – and glorify God at the same time? I do, because I have lived it. From the early 1970s through the mid-‘80s, I relied primarily on my innate skills and intellect for making financial and investing decisions. My successes were many, but my failures were more. In the late 1980s, I faced up to my limitations and turned to the teachings of my friend, Larry Burkett, who had become a leading voice in the evangelical community on the importance of followers of Jesus applying biblical principles for managing their finances. Aligning with God’s ways laid a foundation for future financial success I experienced and continues to shape the work we do at SMI. We all must learn to set financial priorities that honor God and point toward the attainment of God-given goals. For managing our finances, conducting ourselves at work, or being the people we should be in our homes, I have discovered the things worth knowing are, first and foremost, rooted in God’s Word, the Bible. As it states, “All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). We should look primarily to

God’s wisdom, not the conventional wisdom, for practical principles to guide our decisionmaking. Here are some examples: Our responsibility. We must each accept personal responsibility for making knowledgeable, biblically consistent financial decisions. We cannot expect others to make the tough choices for us. “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Our financial freedom. Debt can be enslaving, so we should avoid it as much as possible. “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). Our balance. Maintaining a proper balance between current spending and long-term saving requires wisdom. “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has” (Proverbs 21:20). Our decision-making. We should consistently invest using a carefully considered strategy rather than by making impulsive choices. “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). Our motives. We must guard against greed, wasting energy in futile attempts to get the highest possible returns. “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint” (Proverbs 23:4). As we “renew our minds” with these guiding principles, we can apply them to our day-today financial decisions we each face. If we follow them consistently, we can be confident we are making wise choices for spending, saving, and investing.

Hit-and-run Driver Leaves Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Injured By CRA News Service

Authorities in Delray Beach need the public’s help in catching the driver of a silver Range Rover Sport that struck a man and fled the scene early Sunday morning, leaving him critically severely injured. Police said Jordan Paul Parsons, 25, was walking west across South Federal Highway at Lindell Boulevard shortly after 12:30 a.m. when the 2012 or 2013 SUV hit him. The driver did not stop, leaving Parsons lying on the road, police said. Officer Derek Chahine, who was in the area, was the first to arrive on scene. He used a blanket “to apply pressure to Parsons’ severe leg wound until Delray Beach Fire Rescue responded and transported Parsons to Delray Medical Center where he remains in critical condition,” police said. Investigators say Parsons was wearing headphones when he was hit and may not have heard the SUV approaching. “It’s unclear at this early stage of the investigation who had the right of way,” police spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.

The SUV’s driver side mirror is missing, and it has damage to the driver’s side headlight and bumper area, police said. “We want the business owners, especially the body shops in the area, [to know] that if the vehicle came in … and had this kind of body work to please contact us at the police department,” Sgt. Jeff Rasor said. Parsons, of North Dakita, is an up and coming MMA fighter who spent his last three fights competing for Bellator MMA. He has a career record of 11-2 and was scheduled to have a fight May 14. Parsons trains at Jaco Hybrid Training Center and is part of the Blackzilians mixed martial arts team. Authorities ask anyone with information on the crash to call Officer Daniel Cramer at 561-243-7800 or Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-8477 or online atwww.crimestopperspbc.com or by texting tips@cspbc.com. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Local Residents Band Together to Keep Lake Boca Trash-Free By: Alyssa Lamp

Thousands of locals flock to Lake Boca every year for the annual Boca Bash. Year after a year, pundits would point to the trash left by the boaters in the day-long event, and after the damage Floatopia left Miami Beach, the topic was a hot one as Boca Bash was set to take place. Event planners for this year’s event stressed the importance of everyone cleaning up after themselves because of all the damage caused Miami Beach earlier. They were not interested in seeing Boca Bash have the same kind of negative feedback or sanctions as Floatopia will have in Miami Beach, which includes the possible banning of coolers, tents, floats, live music, and an absolute zero tolerance of anyone consuming alcohol. To make sure Boca Bash does not end up like Floatopia, everyone was urged to make sure they clean up all trash this year. However, despite all the efforts by all who attended the event, some trash is always missed, or cans/bottles are dropped and sink to the bottom of the lake. All the trash that lands in the bottom of the lake is left for a group that helps clean up the waters afterwards, and they are the Boca Bash Cleanup. Founded by a group of boaters, snorkelers, and scuba divers that all live by Lake

Boca, Boca Bash Cleanup says they started this day of cleaning because they wanted to ensure that they keep one of their favorite lakes beautiful and clean for the years to come. Many people and organizations have come to the support of Boca Bash Cleanup, many sponsors donate up to $5,000 to the cause. With the help of all the people that take time off their days to clean the lake after Boca Bash, Boca Bash Cleanup is able to make sure the lake remains trash free. This year, in order to keep the trash to minimum, there were paddle boarders were out at Lake Boca cleaning during the Bash to ensure that the partygoers were cleaning up after themselves. The next day, along with the Boca Bash Cleanup crew, there were a handful of residents in other boats helping to clean the lake. All the heightened measures to keep the lake clean paid off. According to Rich Eten, one of the founders of the Boca Bash Cleanup, this year only 10 mesh garbage bags of trash were picked up, comparing to last years seven-gallon trash bag. “There was twice as many people this year, and only half as much trash as last year,” Eten says, “The incident in Miami, heightened everyone’s awareness.”

“Captain America: Civil War” Marvel Comics’ Funniest Yet

Charlotte Beasley

Charlotte’s Travels Photos by Charlotte Beasley

This week is a bit sad for me, it would have been the 102nd birthday of my dear friend, Flossy Keesley. We celebrated many birthday parties with Flossy and her closest friends including the Countess De Hoernle who was very close to Flossy. She is so missed by so many of us. Her last outing was at the Wick Theater where I took her to see the show “Ain’t Misbehavin and we were joined by the Countess. I am glad I was able to fulfill one of her bucket list wishes to see the Wick Theater. She was treated to a birthday cake and champagne and the show crowd sang Happy Birthday to her. Such good memories!

Skip Sheffield

“Captain America: Civil War” is the funniest Marvel Comics movie I have ever seen. This is a good thing, because I never took seriously the Marvel universe of super heroes. “Civil War,” directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, has a whole mess of them, but the two main characters are Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark, aka Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.). Scarlett Johansson enjoys quite a bit of screen time as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, and we are the better for it. The plot by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, is overly complicated, which lends to the film’s bloated 147-minute length. It boils down to a battle between Captain America, who feels the Avengers should be free of any government control, and Tony Stark, who thinks they should cooperate with the United Nations, FBI and various governmental agencies. But before the big showdown

happens we are treated to a travelogue all over the globe, with furious fights, hairraising car chases and amazing stunts. Able support is provided by Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, who has concealed wings that unfold in time of distress; Don Cheadle as the ever-serious Lt. James Rhodes, aka War Machine; Jeremy Renner returning as the archer Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye; Paul Bettany as the red-faced Vision, and new guy Chadwick Boseman as T’Chall, aka Black Panther. Sebastian Stan plays the villain, Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier. There are more, many more characters. As I said, this movie’s main fault is that it is over-stuffed. But for pure, mindless entertainment it is hard to beat. I still don’t care about the Marvel Comics universe of people with super powers, but darned if I wasn’t pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained by this biff-baff-boff romp. Three Stars: 
