The “Royal Palm Place Jazz Series”, which kicked off last November, continues to bring electrifying mega-talented musicians from around the country to Boca Raton. Boca Raton was clearly well on its way to becoming a mecca for contemporary jazz, and that prediction has certainly come true. This past Friday night, at The Funky Biscuit (formerly named Club 303) in Royal Palm Place, the venue was jam-packed with people who had been waiting months to see the one and only Jackiem Joyner, many of whom had come from cities all across Florida. He and the band played two sets, for well over 2 hours of great jazz, and the response from the crowd was overwhelming. Quotes from attendees included: “THANKS Royal Palm for these awesome jazz shows.....LOVE!”, “What a fabulous concert! He put on an awesome show”, Jackiem Joyner put on a great show tonight...”, “Last night was GREAT, can't wait to see who will be coming in the future; what a fantastic night out!!! Thanks!”, “Thanks again Jacqui for outdoing yourself ! I had such a wonderful evening last night! Really looking
forward to the beginning of a fabulous 2011-2012 Royal Palm Place Jazz Series! Thanks to everyone that help to make these events possible”, “This show was HOT…”, “My husband and I are huge smooth jazz fans. We went to the Funky Biscuit last Friday night to see Jackiem Joyner and brought two friends with us. None of us had been there before. We had a blast!!!! The food was very good, and we loved the show. Thanks! We’re looking forward to the next smooth jazz event…” So what makes Jackiem Joyner so special? He tells a story without words, with an instrumental voice that includes a tenor sax in addition to his trademark alto and soprano horns that are deeply rooted in the rich soil of soulful expression and raw emotion. Listening to him Friday night was an amazing experience. This performer can make his sax wail, growl, and everything in between. Friday night included selections from all three of his CDs,
and they were all hits with the crowd. His self-titled album, Jackiem Joyner, arrived hot on the heels of his 2008 sophomore release, Lil’ Man Soul, which generated two #1 singles. Topping the smooth jazz radio charts for an incredible 12 weeks, “I’m Waiting For You” was the longest-running #1 single in 2009 and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2010 American Smooth Jazz Awards. In 2010 the album’s “Take Me There” climbed to the summit position and set up camp. Babysoul, Joyner’s first album, debuted at #15 on the Billboard chart in 2007 led by the single “Stay With Me Tonight,” a duet with iconic smooth jazz guitarist Peter White. Smooth Jazz News actually named Joyner the Debut Artist of the Year. Around the time Jackiem launched his solo career, he became a featured musician in keyboardist Keiko Matsui’s touring band and continues to tour internationally with her, for whom he plays sax and
flute. Along with Matsui, in recent years Jackiem has performed onstage with Peter White, Gerald Albright, Joe Sample and the late Wayman Tisdale. As an artist, he is maturing and has the confidence to take risks, pushing the envelope creatively. Versatile and blessed with an intuitive gift, Joyner is a definitely a star that has yet to reach its zenith. The jazz series was created by Jacqui Wyatt, Di-
rector of Marketing for Investments Limited and co-host of the popular radio show “The Talk of The Town”, which took the #1 spot in Boca Raton Magazine’s “Ultimate It List… The Boca 100” this year. Helping her bring it all together has been none other than Steve Butler, CEO of Mighty Music Corp. in New York, who is responsible for the fabulous talent lineup. So what do we all have
to look forward to as the series begins its second year? Next up is the Season Preview Show on Friday, October 28th with Urban Gypsy...November 19th we have “Doin' the D” with Alexander Zonjic and special guest Jeff Lorber. As far as the rest of the lineup for the season is concerned, we’ll all just have to stay tuned as we hear Jacqui, Steve and The Funky Biscuit have some major surprises in store for us.

Historical Society to present lecture on ‘Women of Boca Army Air Field’
BOCA RATON – The Boca Raton Historical Society will present a lecture about ‘Women of the Boca Raton Army Air Field during World War II” Aubrey Kintop will offer the lecture Oct. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Old Town Hall at 71 North Federal Highway. That building is the headquarters of the Boca Raton Historical Society. Kintop, a former intern of the Boca Raton Historical Society, recently received her master’s degree in history from Florida Atlantic University and currently serves as FAU adjunct professor specializing in American history. She will discuss her research on civilian and military women of the Boca Raton Army Air Field during World War II. Tickets are $5 for non-members of the museum, free for BRHS members. Golden Bell Scholarship tolls the million dollar mark
BOCA RATON -The Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce Golden Bell Education Foundation has hit the million dollar mark. On the recent occasion of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary, officials noted that more than $1 million has been donated to Boca Raton public schools since 1991. At this year’s Golden Bell Foundation breakfast held Sept. 8 at the Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center, more than $55,000 in educational program grants were handed out. “In 1991, a group of business leaders developed Golden Bell to raise and appropriate funds to our local classrooms,” said Troy M. McLellan, CCE, president and CEO of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce. “They knew then,
as we know now, that a strong education system ensures the sustainability of our community’s success throughout the years. Since then, the local business community has stepped up to support Golden Bell and we look forward to another 20 years of giving back.” The breakfast was sponsored by Bluegreen Corporation. “We want to congratulate Bluegreen Corporation on their own anniversary celebration, as they are celebrating 20 years of operations in Boca Raton,” McLellan said. “We are lucky to have strong business partners, like Bluegreen, who are so engaged in our community.” More than 240 Boca Chamber members and guests attended the Golden Bell breakfast. Broken Sound Club’s $50,000 donation helps ‘raise the roof” for construction of 95th Habitat house
BOCA RATON -Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County and Broken Sound Club recently joined in a “Raise the Roof ” ceremony marking the construction start on a zDelray Beach family’s home. The home, Habitat’s 95th in South Palm Beach County, is being built with the generous support of Broken Sound Club. The
Club donated $50,000 for the build, and staff members have pledged 200 volunteer hours. “Habitat’s important work makes a world of difference to families in our area. Husband named ‘person of interest’ in death of West Boca woman
BOCA RATON – The Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s office has confirmed that Robert Kovacs is considered a ‘person of interest’ in the shooting death last week of his estranged wife, Bozena Kovacs, 49, whose body was found last Friday in the family’s rented home in the Coral Bay community in Boca Chase west of Boca Raton. PBSO notified the Boca Raton Tribune on Tuesday, Sept. 20, that Kovacs was arrested by Fort Lauderdale Police and the South Florida U.S. Marshal’s Fu-
gitive Task Force on a misdemeanor warrant - Violation of Pretrial Release/ No Contact Order. Kovacs has been booked into the Broward County Sheriff ’s Office Jail. By late Tuesday, the PBSO notification said, detectives had not had the opportunity to question Kovacs regarding the suspicious death of this wife. Kovacs, 44, was arrested at a Pollo Tropical restaurant on Federal Highway near Southeast 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale between 5 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, of-
ficials said. Investigators said they received a tip that he has at a local hotel. PBSO said that marshals had been tracking Kovacs through the weekend and received information about the hotel on Sunday when the surveillance started, he said. Investigators said Bozena Kovacs died of a single gunshot to her head. Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Davis said her 21-year-old daughter discovered her mother's body early Friday in the bedroom of their home in
the 18000 block of Clear Brook Circle. Bozena Kovacs' daughter had gone out with friends about 8 p.m. on Thursday. When she returned home between 1:30 and 1:45 a.m. she found the garage door open. Her stepfather's black Cadillac was missing, Davis said. Reports say Bozena Kovacs and her two grown children moved into the home in the Coral Bay community in Boca Chase about three weeks ago. Her husband followed last week, according to reports.

Boca, PB County remain at odds over Palmetto Park Road project BOCA RATON – Officials from Boca Raton and Palm Beach County remain at odds over the future of a proposed project that would widen sections of Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton and West Boca. The proposal covers sections of the road within the city limits and in county territory. But the county cannot complete its widening work unless the city agrees to do the same on its section. Boca and Palm Beach County officials met Thursday to start hammering out an agreement on the controversial wid-
ening of Palmetto Park Road, but could reach no agreement. The mediation meeting Sept. 15 was requested by the City of Boca Raton. County Commissioner Steven L. Abrams, who represents Boca Raton and its environs, said he is still opposed to the plan that would widen the road through residential neighborhoods and community parks, particularly when the traffic engineers advise that the road will still remain at a deficient level of service. County Engineer George Webb told the Boca Raton City Council
months ago that Palmetto Park Road would still be rated as “F” even after the work is done. As the meeting came to a conclusion, county commissioners said they need more information about the traffic impacts of abandoning the project. They also want input from residents west of Florida's Turnpike, said Commission Chairwoman Karen Marcus. "I want to make sure that I've considered all the options that are in the area, and I don't think we have the information here today," Marcus said. "I don't
want to be back here in 10 or five or eight years saying, 'Oh, we've got to make this intersection improvement.' " The project would widen Palmetto Park Road by one lane in each direction from west of Interstate 95 to west of St. Andrews Boulevard. Residents along the road have strongly objected to it, and the Boca Raton City Council adopted a resolution earlier this year asking the county to kill the plan. The widening would affect the intersection of Palmetto Park Road and Military Trail intersec-

Governor Rick Scott has issued a proclamation honoring Florida’s 24 regional Workforce Alliance job-locating organizations by declaring September as Workforce Development Month. The proclamation acknowledges the valuable services provided by the regional workforce organizations to employers and job seekers statewide. In Palm Beach County, where Workforce Alliance Career Centers are located
in Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Belle Glade, the agency placed 12,771 people in jobs in its most recent program year (July 2010 to June 2011) – a 19 percent increase over the previous year. In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ranks Florida No. 1 in the nation for its workforce and training programs in its most recent annual evaluation. “During the past two years, economic conditions in Florida and Palm Beach

Man robbed of his jewelry in Boca Raton BOCA RATON – Boca Raton Police are investigating a jewelry robbery that occurred about 9:50p.m. Sept. 13. Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the parking garage of 1515 South Federal
Highway. A police report said the victim told officers he was emptying trash into the dumpster in a room on the first level of the parking garage. A male approached him, pointed a silver handgun
at him and demanded his jewelry. The victim gave the suspect his gold ring and gold necklace. The suspect fled on foot in a southwest direction, police said. The victim was not injured. The robber was said to

BOCA RATON – Local police are searching for the suspect who tore a gold necklace from a man as he was walking near the Florence Fuller Child Development Center at 200 NE 14th St. about 8:10 a.m. Sept. 14. Police said the victim told them he had taken his child to the center and was walking home between the school and Dixie Manor, when a male walked towards him. According to police, he grabbed the victim’s necklace and ripped it off his neck.
The victim chased the suspect north to the area of NE 2nd Court where he lost sight of him when the suspect jumped the fence that surrounds Dixie Manor. The suspect was said to be place, 20-30 years of age, 5’ 10” tall, with short hair, wearing a light blue tshirt and dark shorts. At age 99, Countess de Hoernle still makes her presence known in Boca Raton Saturday will be a very special day for a very special woman in Boca Raton. That’s when Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle, will mark her 99th birthday Whether we realize it or not, we all have something to thank her for. If we have ever visited the Boca Raton Museum of Art or the Mizner Park Amphitheater; if we have ever gotten help from the American Red Cross, Boca Raton chapter; if we have ever attended classes at Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University or Palm Beach State College, then we have been helped by her tremendous largesse. Either she alone or with her husband, the late Count Adolph de Hoernle, has given uncountable millions of dollars to those and many, many other organizations. If you were present this past Monday at the Peter Blum Family YMCA here in Boca, you would have seen the many sides of the Countess. The pre-school kids there honored her for donations to the Y which resulted in the creation of the pre-school and

also with the youth development center. The Countess posed for pictures of the children as they presented her with gifts they crafted with their own hands. The Countess smiled with much joy, exhibiting her obvious love of children. He is the quintessence of humility. Then, everyone headed to a small conference room for cake. Joining the crowd was Flossy Keesely, another Boca benefactor and friend of the countess. Amid flashing camera strobes, the Countess greeted the kids, hugged them and whispered words in their ears. “This YMCA has been privileged to have this relationship with the Countess,” said CEO Richard Pollack. “She has been active as a board member and a volunteer.” If you don’t believe the Countess is a handson person, think again. She employs no accountants or number crunchers. She spends her nights poring over requests for donations until early morning. She alone decides who receives what, and how much.
As she has wisely said many times, “Give while you live so you’ll know where it goes.” My wife and I feel very, very lucky to have become friends with the Countess. We have been graced with the opportunity to meet with her at her home in St. Andrews South. She is a gracious lady who has many wonderful stories to tell – many of which transcend the dollars she has given over the years. The year 2011 is significant to the Countess in several ways. Not only is she marking her 99th birthday, but 2011 is also the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the Count and Countess de Hoernle in Boca Raton. There are so many stories about this wonderful and loving couple who made Boca Raton and the surrounding area the recipients of their generosity. One of the first donations the couple made – well, actually she made it to her husband – was to purchase the old Florida East Coast Railroad Station as a birthday present to him, thus saving a historic building and allow-
ing the Boca Raton Historical Society to turn it into a community facility as well as a learning site. I remember covering the grand opening of the Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle Building in West Palm Beach, the location of Children’s Home Society. She and her husband also endowed a building at the Palm Beach State College campus in Lake Worth. So, their financial assistance sometimes went beyond the Boca borders. But she loves Boca, her newfound home town. The Countess was born in Germany, but came to the United States in her youth. She was fascinated by rooms in hospitals where plaques listed the name of donors. She wanted very much to see her name on one of her plaques. And she did that, first in New York, and since then, in many places around South Florida. She is truly one of a kind. As Flossy said at the birthday event at the Y, “I believe no other community has as much cooperation” as the Countess has given to Boca Raton.

Countess de Hoernle has transformed from icon to friend and Tribune supporter When I first moved to Boca Raton from Brazil 12 years ago, one of the first people I became aware of was Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle. I saw her everywhere, and even more frequently, I saw her name or that of her late husband, Count Adolph de Hoernle, on buildings all over the city. I thought maybe she and her husband were the founders of Boca Raton. I was even thinking that maybe they and Addison Mizner had made Boca Raton what it is. And since Google hadn’t been created yet, I couldn’t determine by computer who she was! Well, I got a pleasant surprise. Addison Mizner was the architect who made the city look the way it does. But the de Hoernles contributed to the city’s growth with money that came from the heart. It took a while for me to catch up with the Countess. She is so active, even as she approaches 99 years of age. Last year, with a great deal of pride and humility, my wife and I met the

Countess at the March of Dimes Signature Chefs event at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Even though she was the guest of honor and recipient of an award for public service, she talked to me like we had known each other for years. But the Countess is like this with everyone. She makes you feel right at home. She is sharp and listens intently. It was a great pleasure to meet the Countess, and she will always have a close place in our hearts. What also pleased me that night – and even today – is the support the Countess has given to the Tribune. She has emphatically pointed out the need for a local paper in Boca Raton. Not only that, she signed up for mail subscription No. 1 of the Boca Raton. That really is a show of support. I realize today how much the de Hoernles have done for Boca Raton. I have come to understand her love of children and desire to make certain they all receive a proper education. Just
the other day, she was greeting children at the YMCA. Last year, the kids and staff from the Boca Raton Children’s Museum honored her on her 98th birthday with a tea in the front yard of the building. She was just as gracious on that hot summer day in 2010 as she always has been. Countess, we wish you the very best as we approach your 99th birthday Saturday. We also thank another close friend of yours, Yaacov Heller, owner of Gallery 22, for setting up a dedication ceremony for the statues he created of you and your late husband which stand at the edge of the stage at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater in Mizner Park as well as a birthday celebration. We hope everyone will be there at 3 p.m. on Saturday to bring greetings and wonderful wishes to a wonderful lady. Countess, I promise you that when the Boca Tribune creates a news media center, we will name it in your honor.

True Love Never Loses Its Power!
Love must be cultivated on a one by one basis, with respect to individuals a person chooses to impact. It seeks to address specific deficits in another life, attempting to meet a particular necessity an individual may call for. It is to be treated like a tender plant requiring careful, continual nourishment at regular intervals, so it may grow. Love originates within a person, and it bears some characteristics of the provider. It is something which may be learned at first, but after a while it becomes a natural disposition, flowing freely from its giver. A wise commentator indicated that “loving everybody in general may be an excuse for loving nobody in particular.” Someone else illustrated that idea in verse form: “To love the
world /For me is no chore /My only problem /Is the man next door!” In his best-selling volume, Tuesdays With Morrie, author Mitch Albom quotes Morrie remarking that “the most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” And the late Norman Vincent Peale confirmed it when he wrote that “loving and being loved are opposite sides of the same coin.” Legitimate love can be the experience of secure, sincere, stable individuals only in both giving and receiving it. True love is not self-seeking; it is voluntarily and freely offered to whomever is sought as its object. Love may be conveyed in words, manifested through physical gestures, or expressed in other legitimate ways. Yet, it is ex-
emplified most powerfully through giving, especially in the giving of one’s self ! One’s physical presence supersedes other presents! Because love is such an important ingredient for healthy and joyous living in the world, every person should carefully seek genuine, human objects of love, while remaining always open to be loved by others also. Love’s supply is never depleted when love is given away! There’s much truth to the popular song that declares, ‘tis love that makes the world go ‘round! But only real love can accomplish that! Avoid all unworthy substitutes, and the manifold caricatures of it, which can never achieve what authentic love alone can do! There is power in love, and true love never loses its power!

Bill Hager to seek second term as state rep in Dist 87 BOCA RATON – Bill Hager, a former Boca Raton City Council member who succeeded Adam Hasner as state representative from District 87 in 2010, has announced via email that he will seek reelection to that seat. The email from his campaign committee con-
tains a petition that he is asking voters to sign so he can get on the 2012 ballot. It says residents do not have to live in District 87 to sign the petition, but must be registered voters. A businessman and attorney, Hager, a Republican, received his bachelor’s degree from the
University of Northern Iowa in 1969, masters degree from the University of Hawaii in 1972, and Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1974. He is a former member of the Boca Raton City Council and currently re-

Traffic Homicide Investigators help secure guilty verdict BOCA RATON – A jury on Sept. 15 found James Franklin Clark guilty of DUI manslaughter. He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. Clark, 39, of Boca Raton, will be sentenced Oct. 21, police said. According to reports, the crash occurred on Friday, October 3, 2006, at about 9:20 p.m. The victim, Lucy Miller, 85, had just left services at Congregation B’Nai Israel, 2200 West Yamato Road.
Police said Miller was attempting to make a uturn from eastbound Yamato Road to westbound Yamato Road. According to witnesses, Miller was moving slowly as she made the turn. Clark was driving westbound in an Infiniti SUV and struck Miller’s Toyota, killing her, said police. When Boca Raton Police Traffic Homicide investigators interviewed Clark, they said they could smell alcohol on his breath.
Clark admitted to having multiple drinks prior to the crash and his blood alcohol level was 0.12%, an hour after the crash, said police. After an extensive review of the evidence, Boca Raton Traffic Homicide investigators were able to determine Clark was traveling at least 70 mph (the posted speed is 45 mph) and that his speed clearly contributed to the cause of the crash. She then left the gas station and went to a dry cleaners down the road. While there, Sandra could not find her credit card. At 1540 hours she received a phone call from the credit card company and they advised her that someone is attempting to use her at the same gas station for a second time within 10 minutes. She advised the credit card company to put a stop on the card.

Commissioners want state to reconsider laws forcing repeal of local gun, ammo rules Palm Beach County Commissioners have fired off a resolution to the state legislature asking lawmakers to reconsider their decision to adopt laws that force counties, cities and towns to repeal local regulations on guns and ammunition. Commissioners voted 6-0, with Shelly Vana absent, to ask legislators to rethink provisions that go into effect Oct. 1 which would prevent counties, cities and towns from enforcing their own regulations. In some cases, local officials could face civil fines of up to $5,000 if they try to enforce ordinances that violate state law. Also, commissioners approved changes to various firearms ordinances involving record keeping, discharging firearms, sale of firearms in an emergency and discharging a firearm in or near a natural disaster. These ordinances were in violation of the new state law that says firearms laws can only come from the state. In other business at the Sept. 13 meeting, commissioners took the following action: Airport Parking Dis-
count – Created a discount program providing for a passenger to receive up to a $20 discount on parking fees if they fly on a predesignated promotional flight that includes either new non-stop markets or group travel. The flight must serve a market not currently served on a nonstop basis. Ethics Commission – Accepted a Memorandum of Understanding from the Boca Raton Airport Authority to engage the services of the Commission on Ethics and its executive director. This action addresses the Airport Authority’s desire to subject itself to the county’s ethics regulations. Animal Care and Control Advisory Board – Voted to dissolve the advisory board as staff recommended. Staff will continue to work with local animal organizations, citizens and professionals in the field of animal welfare. The division will continue to accept citizen input and volunteer support on all issues relating to improving animal welfare. Ocean Avenue Bridge – Approved funding for the construction of a new
Ocean Avenue bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in the Town of Lantana. The project also includes a fishing pier under the west end paid for with Parks and Recreation bond funds. Ranchettes MSTU Project – Voted to open the municipal services taxing unit (MSTU) program for the Fargo Avenue and El Paso Drive/ Pancho Way/Pinto Drive (east end only) road improvement projects. Commissioners authorized modification of the MSTU ordinance to allow a percentage up to 100 percent of project costs to be assessed for these two projects. The board directed staff to immediately proceed to hire a consultant to design the projects and provide the most cost effective paved surface for these roads, which may or may not involve installing drainage to meet current county standards.

BOCA RATON -“Give while you live, and know where it goes.” This statement, the motto of Countess Henrietta de Hoernle, is reflective of the overwhelming philanthropic efforts made by the Count and Countess de Hoernle since their arrival in Boca Raton in 1981. Millions of dollars have been contributed to organizations which the de Hoernles felt had committed volunteers, a strong understanding of mission, and the ability to better or enhance the lives of the people of Boca Raton. Their contributions have not just been monetary, however. The Countess has dedicated herself to being a “hands-on” volunteer which is reflected in her
countless service hours, participation as a member of many local boards and her role as an Honorary Chairperson for a variety of fundraising events. Count Adolph de Hoernle was born in Pforzheim, Black Forest, Germany on May 10, 1903. He earned an engineering degree in 1923 and came to the United States in 1926. He founded Stewart Stamping Company, a tool and die firm located in Yonkers, NY. Countess Henrietta de Hoernle was born Henrietta Rach on September 24, 1912, in Karlsruhe, Black Forest, Germany. The Countess moved to the United States in 1930 and married the Count on

moved to Florida permanently in 1981. The Countess enjoys playing bridge and contribut-
ing her time to charity work. The de Hoernles began their lifetime of charity work and philanthropy while living in New York. They contributed to: The Community Fund of Bronxville, Hudson River Museum of Yonk e r s , L a w rence
Hospital, Bronxville: East Wing, The de Hoernle Pavilion, and New York City Opera, to name a few. Upon their arrival in Boca Raton in 1981, the de Hoernles immediately began contributing to organizations in their new home. The Countess stipulated that her charitable contributions remain in Boca Raton so that she could see where her money went. BOCA RATON – Boca philanthropist Henrietta Countess de Hoernle, remembers with great fondness and a radiant smile the day a royal lady came into her life and made her feel “like Cinderella.” The Countess said it was the day she met “a Queen with a heart,” Queen Silvia of Sweden. Actually, Queen Silvia went out of her way to find the Countess and to sit with her during a fundraiser in Hillsboro for one of the Queen’s charities. They conversed and held hands for moments that will
live on in the Countess’ memory like a magical fairy tale. “I was on Cloud 9, she made me feel like Cinderella,” the Countess said of the event held last April at the home of The Honorary Consul, Mr. Per-Olof Loof and his wife Mrs. Åsa-Lena Loof, grand benefactors of the World Childhood Foundation. Queen Silvia founded the World Childhood Foundation in the United States to raise funds to create programs to prevent sexual abuse and exploitation of children. in the US and globally, among them, Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines and Kristi House in Miami. It’s easy for the Countess to remember that day. “The Queen gave me a picture in a silver frame” which froze that wonderful moment in time. Actually, she received three photos, one, the Countess and Queen Silvia; another, the Countess and the Queen’s daughter, Princess Madeleine and a third with the King, Queen and Princess outside the home with other dignitaries. The 98-year-old Countess said that she arrived at the event via the beach entrance. Since she was using her three-wheel motorized cart to get around, she could not climb the stairs to the main area where the dinner was taking place. “It’s a big,
big place, there must be 100 steps. Consequently, I could not get to the receiving line. Also, by the time I arrived at the home, I was exhausted.” Disappointed, the Countess took a seat far from the royal family. She feared she would miss seeing the Queen -- for a second time. In 1980, Boca’s Countess was presented to King Carl XVI Gustaf by Princess Cristina, the King’s sister. But the Queen was out of town at the time. “I called for the hostess and told her, “I guess I will miss the Queen again,’” the Countess lamented. But the hostess said, “No, you won’t. I’ll bring the Queen to you.” In a few moments, the leading royal lady of Sweden along with Princess Madeleine approached the Countess’ table. “She sat and we
held hands,” the Countess recalls vividly. “She pointed out the fact that we were born in the same area of Germany – about a half century apart.” They chatted about their homeland and talked about the wonderful weather in Boca Raton. “I always ask people, ‘Don’t you love our weather here?’” She added “They have a lot of cold weather in Sweden.” Reflecting on her meeting with the Queen and her daughter Madeleine, the Countess said, “They are beautiful, charming and kind.” She noted the Queen is “a beautiful woman. Everyone loves her.” The Countess felt particularly touched that the Queen

and Princess sat down to have pictures taken with her. After exchanging hugs, the Queen and Princess went their way and the Countess left the event and headed home, “still on Cloud
9,” she said. The Countess learned that the King and Queen attended a church service in Boca, and then traveled to New York the next day where the Queen was “hassled by paparazzi.” While try-
ing to escape from the photographers, the Queen twisted her ankle. Although this incident saddened the Countess, she still has her memories of a wonderful day spent with a wonderful royal lady in Boca Raton.

The de Hoernle’s brought ‘a reputation for philanthropy’ to Boca Raton
Count Adolph and Countess Henrietta de Hoernle already had quite a reputation for philanthropy in March of 1986 when I was asked to write a story about their $500,000 donation to jump-start the drive to restore the 1930 Florida East Coast Railway station. I had a special interest in the station, as it was the starting point for one of my life’s greatest adventures: traveling solo to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and back at age 13. I was anticipating a domicile befitting royalty, but then as now, the de Hoernles lived quite modestly in St. Andrew’s Estates South retirement community. Nor did the couple have a fancy car. When the Count passed away, Henrietta, or Rita, as she is known to her friends, tooled around town in a white Toyota. I was impressed at the time at how down-toearth Count Adolph de Hoernle was. He was not from inherited wealth. Adolph de Hoernle earned his fortune the hard way: establishing and running a thriving
metal stamping business in Yonkers, New York. The walls of the apartment were decorated with various titles (they have seven in addition to the Count and Countess titles) and awards. When you give away as much money as the de Hoernles have, people are grateful and want to publicly express that gratitude. After my interview I felt really good about Count and Countess de Hoernle. They didn’t just randomly dispense money to all who asked and they didn’t give to aggrandize themselves. The Countess calmly and rationally considered each request. Her motto was and still is: Give while you live and know where it goes.” Years later we had the melancholy task of cataloging, labeling and selling many of our mother’s possessions after her death and sale of her house. Who should pull up in a white Toyota but the Countess? She browsed through the stuff like any bargainseeker. I don’t think she recognized me and I
didn’t let on I knew her. One of her friends later told me the Countess was quite fond of garage sales. Several years later I attended a classical music concert at FAU at the invitation of one of the Countess’ friends. I was seated right next to the Countess. I introduced myself and she said, “I know who you are. I like what you write.” Naturally that made me feel good, but what made me feel better was the Countess’ insightful remarks on the music. Henrietta is a fond patron of the arts, and she is no dilettante. She knows her business and she was sharing knowledge with me. As each year passes I am more amazed. The Countess keeps up her tireless schedule. She smiles for photos and greets people of all ages, even tiny children as she did Monday at the YMCA Boca Raton. She is the closest thing to royalty Boca Raton will ever have. Long live the Countess de Hoernle.

Famed Boca artists shares close bond with Countess
BOCA RATON – The close bond of friendship that developed between famed Boca artist Yaacov Heller and Boca philanthropist Henrietta, Countess de Hoernle, can be traced back to the day she came to his studio with a ring that had caused her finger to swell painfully. “It was a thick gold ring, and her finger was in pain,” Heller told the Boca Raton Tribune. “Instead of going to the emergency room, she came to my shop.” Heller said he took a jewelry saw, carefully cut the ring, then repaired it and gave it back to her. “It took about an hour.” Since then, the artist and the community benefactor have been friends. Last year, Heller helped celebrate the Countess’ 98th birthday by creating a bust of her and her late husband, Adolph, which is now on display on the second floor of the replica of the Rickards House at the Boca Raton Children’s Museum. To mark her 99th birthday Saturday, Heller is sponsoring a dedication ceremony for the bronze statues of the Count and Countess he created. They were recently moved from the sculpture garden outside his shop, Gallery 22, in Royal Palm Place, to a permanent lo-
cation near the stage of the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater in Mizner Park. The event will be held Saturday at 3 p.m., and the community is invited. In addition to the dedication, there will be entertainment from America Idol season 10 finalist Brett Loewenstern, Future Stars winners Vanessa Simpson and Kendra Fulmer and the Countess de Hoernle Singers, among others. Mayor Susan Whelchel is also scheduled to be on hand. Heller said he has engraved in the status base the Countess’ famous motto, “Give while you live, know where it goes.” The Boca artist said he originally met the Countess 10 years ago while he was creating the statue of another Boca benefactor, Flossy Keesely, which now stands at the entrance to the amphitheater. “Flossy brought the Countess to the unveiling” of Flossy’s combination fountain and statue. The Countess was impressed by the statue as well as Heller’s jewelry handiwork. She soon brought the local artist jewelry that belonged to her late husband. She asked Heller to create a necklace for her made of the many precious jewels her husband had accumulated.
“She said she didn’t trust anyone other than me with the jewelry,” Heller said. Heller said he and his wife, Sue, a teacher of the arts, admire the Countess’ desire to promote this genre. He said the Countess supports their efforts to keep arts in the schools and community. The Countess showed her friendship when the Hellers moved from Highland Beach to Boca Pointe. Knowing their kitchen was not ready to use, Heller said she made them meals every night. With this friendship comes mutual respect. “I
call her the Countess,” said Heller. Some other friends call her Rita, but “I want to give her the respect she deserves.” It works both ways. The Countess wears many of Heller’s jewelry creations. He said they are lighter than some of her other accessories and are more comfortable. Heller even jokes about the Countess wearing his creations while she is playing bridge, by far her favorite game. All in all, Heller said, he, his wife and family “feel like a family.”

uled to kick off January 2012. “The men and women who have served so valiantly in our country’s recent conflicts deserve a chance to achieve the American dream for which they risked their lives – owning your own business,” said Hal Finkelstein, chairman of the South Palm Beach SCORE. “The tragedy is that many of them return from fighting for our country, and have a tough time finding work. We won’t to let that stand anymore.”

Palm Beach County unemployment drops in August By Tom Veenstra Workforce Alliance
Palm Beach County’s unemployment rate for August 2011 was 11.0 percent – down 0.2 percentage points from the July 2011 rate of 11.2 percent – and a 1.3 percentage point decrease from the August 2010 rate of 12.3 percent, according to information provided by Workforce Alliance and the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation. The state unemployment rate for August 2011 was 10.9 percent and the national rate was 9.1 percent (not seasonally adjusted). “It’s encouraging to
note that Palm Beach County experienced its largest over-the-year employment increase of 2011, adding 8,100 jobs over the last 12 months, and job openings have increased 12.6 percent compared to this same time last year,” said Steve Craig, interim chief executive officer of Workforce Alliance, the nonprofit organization chartered by the state of Florida to create and lead workforce development in Palm Beach County. The county experienced employment growth in six industry categories over the last 12 months, including include leisure and hospitality (+5,700

BOCA RATON – On Monday, Sept.12,, Rich Shavell, CPA, CVA, CCIFP, president of Boca Raton-based Shavell & Company, P.A., testified in a public hearing before the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C. Learning to ask questions – and knowing the right questions to ask – are two of the most important skills you must develop if you want to succeed in life, whether in the workplace, your home, or in any other personal pursuits: • Unless you ask questions, you cannot make distinctions. • If you do not make distinctions, you cannot make decisions. • If you cannot make a decision, you cannot take action. • If you do not act, you will fail! Contrary to popular opinion, asking questions is a sign of intelligence. The higher your intelligence, the more likely you are to probe, ponder, and question. You are always seeking to learn, to understand, to grow. There are no stupid questions. What is stupid is not asking for clarification when you know that you do not understand something. When you allow concern about yourimage (“I must appear to know it all”) to take priority over your learning – that is stupid! Will Rogers, a humorist and commentator on life, once said, “Everybody is ignorant…just on different subjects!” Likewise, because we have all had different experiences, we

There Are No Stupid Questions! each can learn from anyone if we are wise enough to ask the right questions. The Bible says this: “Though good advice lies deep within a counselor’s heart, the wise man will draw it out” (Proverbs 20:5). The way you draw wisdom out of others is by asking questions. There are many kinds of questions. Here is just a sampling of types of questions we can ask: • Mind-stretching questions: “What could happen if…? Is there a better way?” • Defining questions: “What is the real issue here?” • Researching questions: “What are the facts? What do we need to know?” • Problem-solving questions: “What are five ways we might overcome this?” • Prioritizing questions: “What is most important?” • Cautioning questions: “What is wrong with this idea?” • Catalyzing questions: “What are we going to do now?” All great teachers understand that asking questions is one of the most effective teaching tools. If you are a supervisor, manager, salesman, or parent, try this approach: Rather
than telling the people you are seeking to lead what you think they should do, engage their minds by asking them questions. Provoke their thinking, and seek to guide them to the actions you think they should take. If you really want to become expert at doing this, get a Bible and read through the first four books of the New Testament (the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). As you read, underline every question Jesus asked. No one has ever been more effective than He was at using questions to train, lead, teach, inspire, and encourage. Who Gets the Money? Q My wife and I are in the middle of a divorce. One of the issues we are arguing over is the distribution of a large sum of money that will probably be coming to me as the result of a pending personal injury case. Three years ago, stopped at a light, I was rear ended by a guy driving a truck. I was making a delivery for my employer at the time of the accident. I was injured, had several operations, and need more. I have a disability my orthopedist calls 50 percent. I have not been able to work, but I may be able to. I brought cases against my employer under the worker’s compensation law and the driver of the truck and its owner. I have a top-notch personal injury lawyer who says I will probably be awarded several million dollars in damages because of my age, 35. My divorce lawyer says that most of the money from both cases will be mine. My wife tells me that she does not care what the law is, she wants half or she will do something to hurt my cases. What is the law on the treatment of future personal injury awards in divorce cases? A In the worker’s
compensation case, you can receive money to reimburse you for medical expenses for past lost wages and for future lost wages. In the case against the driver and owner of the truck, you can collect lost wages, future wages, and medical expenses, and pain and suffering. Your wife can collect for consortium, meaning her damaged relationship with you. Under the case law, portions of the damages will be marital, and portions not marital. Reimbursement for money spent for past medical treatment, or past wages will be considered marital, and would be divided like any other marital property. Receipt of money for lost future wages will not be considered marital, but will be considered in determining future responsibility for alimony or child support claims. The largest part of any award will be for pain and suffering in your case against the driver and the owner. That is not marital property, and will not be subject to distribution to your wife. A reasonable investment return on that money can be considered in determination of your alimony and child sup-
port obligations, but not before the actual amount is known. It is unlikely that there will be much awarded for your lost relationship with your wife during a divorce case unless she can prove that the divorce resulted from the accident. Whatever is received would be marital. Your wife’s threat to harm your case if you do not split it all with her is blackmail. Her testimony regarding your current physical capabilities and psychological situation can be shaded in such a way as to affect your success in the litigation. Your lawyer in the personal injury case has a problem, as he now has two clients at odds, a conflict of interest. He also has an obligation to you to make sure that any settlement must carefully break down the award by the categories mentioned above, or it might all be marital. You, your wife, and the lawyers will probably do better if you and your wife cooperate with each other, and the lawyers cooperate with one another. If you do not, the personal injury defense lawyers will use your animosity to reduce your award or defeat your cases.

Strikers Salvage Last Minute Draw With Atlanta The Fort Lauderdale Strikers (9-11-7, 38 points) played to a 1-1 draw against the Atlanta Silverbacks (4- 4-19, 16 points) tonight at Lockhart Stadium. Atlanta’s Nico Colaluca and Strikers forward Brian Shriver scored in the final minutes to give the 4,688 in attendance a dramatic finish. “We probably we should’ve been up three or four,” said head coach Daryl Shore, “but that’s the way this game is. Give our guys credit. We give up a goal, and we got one back.” Colaluca opened the scoring in the 90th minute after he received a pass and put a touch onto his
right foot. Just outside the 18-yard-box, he curled a shot which ricocheted off the far post and in for his first of the season. Immediately following the goal, the Strikers Eduardo Coudet sent a long pass to a streaking Yoximar Granado. With a short touch, Granado crossed it into the box and Shriver was there to put it home for his sixth of the season, tying Coudet for the team lead. In the first half, the Strikers were the more attacking team, pressing high up the pitch. Martin Nunez was through in the 28th minute alone on goal after a long ball from the
defense. He rounded the keeper, but he hit the shot wide and left. Colaluca proved to be the Silverbacks playmaker, as he was taking his chances. In the 41st minute, he hit a right-footed shot aiming for the far post, but goalkeeper Matt Glaeser was there to make the save. Following the first half, the Silverbacks came out pushing forward. Grant Kerr, on loan from the Strikers, took a shot from 18 yards out to Glaeser’s left, but the Strikers goalkeeper dove and stopped it. Atlanta almost put themselves ahead in the 71st minute. After a free kick was curled into the
box, three different shots were stopped by Glaeser, deflected off the post and blocked from point blank range. “We persevered and we got a goal back. It is a positive you can take into the playoffs, because it shows we’re determined and we’re not going to quit,” said Shore. With this draw and the Montreal Impact beating FC Edmonton, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers will be hosting their first playoff game on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Strikers next travel to face FC Tampa Bay on Sept. 24 at 7:00p.m. at Al Lang Stadium.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A free kick goal by Harald Gracholski was all Lynn University’s defense needed to post its third shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Florida Tech. Gracholski logs his third gamewinner of the year in helping the Fighting Knights to their fourth consecutive win and first in Sunshine State Conference play.
It was a game of high pressure from Florida Tech (4-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC) right from the opening whistle. The Panthers were intent on allowing the Blue & White (4-1-0, 1-0-0 SSC) as little room to move as possible. That strategy worked until late in the opening half as LU countered on a failed FIT pass.
Lynn’s offensive attack made its way into Panthers territory and a foul at the top of the box would set up LU for the winning goal. With Martin Wehlert and Gracholski standing over the ball in the 38th minute, Gracholski bent his shot around the four-man wall and inside the right post for his fourth goal of the year. The Knights’ defen-
sive unit of Jason Sangha, A.B. Magnusson, Michael Kutscher and James Aldred and goalkeeper Matt DiCerbodid the rest, stopping Florida Tech at every turn. Lynn held the Panthers to one shot attempt in the first half and six total, with only two making its way on goal. Brentton Muhammad turned away four shots for FIT.

FAU Owls Soccer Wins 2-1 Over North Florida
BOCA RATON, FL The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team came from behind to win against North Florida. After a loss to Georgia State earlier in the weekend, FAU was able to step up their offense and beat UNF 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville, FL. The Owls gave up a one on one goal against keeper, Jeremy Crumpton to UNF in the 28th minute of the game, but the Owls were able to comeback in the second half and capi-
talize on their offensive opportunities. With having only seven shots all game and only two corner kicks FAU took advantage of the little chances that they had in front of the goal. Ramin Rahemi scored the equalizer goal against UNF in the 86th minute after a FAU corner kick was bobbled around and Ramin was able to volley the ball past UNF keeper from outside the box. Less than a minute later Michael Dunbar opened the
UNF defense up with a pass to an unguarded Stan Castaldo who was able to finish the ball in the far right side of the goal. The men's soccer team is now 4-3-1 on the season and will have two more non-conference games this week before beginning play in the MidAmerican Conference. On Friday, Sept. 23 the Owls will host Howard at 7 p.m. and then will play Marshall in Boca Raton, FL as well on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12:00 p.m.

Lynn Women’s Volleyball beats Florida Southern for first Conference Win By: Lance Thomas
The Lynn University volleyball team tallied 16 total blocks and held the Florida Southern Mocs to a sub .100 hitting percentage en route to a three set sweep on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference play. The Fighting Knights (7-4, 1-1 SSC) set the tone early by grabbing a 25-22 first-set win over Florida Southern (7-4, 2-1 SSC). The first frame went back and forth and was tied at 19 before Lynn went on a 6-4 run to close out the set. In the set, Brianna Cox posted a set-high four kills, three total blocks and two solo blocks.
In the second set, the Fighting Knights continued to impose their will on Mocs and vaulted out to an early 11-4 lead. But Florida Southern answered back with an 8-1 run to tie the game up at 12-12. With the help of two Brittany Brown aces, Lynn posted a 13-4 run to take a 25-18 win in the set. Brown also added four kills and Shannon Dugan chipped in with three. The Knights hit .310 in the set and collected six total blocks. The Blue & White tallied another six team blocks in the third set and limited the Mocs to a mere .029 team hitting mark while romping to a 25-17 win. For the third straight
set, the teams traded points until the half way mark where Lynn separated from the Mocs. It was Brown again with a teamhigh four kills in the set.
Brown led all attackers with an impressive .400 hitting percentage on 10 kills, two errors and 20 attempts. Setter Abbey Brokop shared the set-
ting responsibilities with Mandy McIntosh but still managed to tally 26 assists with seven digs. Freshman libero Nikki Haben led the team in digs with 10.
Lynn’s dominance at the net was a major factor in the Fighting Knights’ victory as the Blue & White out Zblocked Florida Southern 16-4.

After winning only 2 games in their past 50 prior to this season, the Sharks are now 3-0. “This was like a college game atmosphere tonight!" said Sharks coach Ray Berger. "We're really excited for these kids; they have certainly taken a beating the last few years." The Sharks were led by Reggie Love, who had two touchdown catches and put the Sharks up 26-0. Former Olympic Heights QB, Taylor Schnaars was 10-for-21 for 254 yards with three touchdown passes.
The 3rd week is now over and Boca Raton only has one undefeated team left. The Spanish River Sharks have a clean record of 3 and 0 and defeated Olympic Heights. The Cougars had a 27-0 lead going into the half. Boca Christian completed only 10 of their 21 passes and only had only 80 total yards the entire game. Heber Michel had 16 tackles and rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown on five attempts, but the Blazers fell to the Cougars in Boca Raton.

After a great comeback win against West Boca in week 1, the Bobcats have lost two straight now. The Bobcats played the Warriors, and got the best Warriors effort of the season thus far. The Bobcats could never really get any offense going, and with their lead runner, Keith Byars II out of the game due to injury, Boca was held to only 70 yards rushing.
